Delays almost over for new Trangie petrol station, owner “RED tape” hold-ups to the new Trangie petrol station have almost all been overcome, following criticism of delays to the project. This follows closure of the previous facility in October 2022, with Narromine Shire Council’s mayor, Craig Davies, recently penning a letter blaming NSW Transport for the setbacks. Yet lease-owner, Inland Petrol, have confi rmed that a number of hurdles have now been cleared, a spokesperson for the company said. “The Trangie fuel faculty has been pushed well-past the timeframe that all involved expected,” said Harry Mooring, Inland Petroleum’s business development manager. “Since the last update, Inland Petroleum has progressed through the ‘red tape’ surrounding this project... we have moved forward and only have three out of 37 items (are) remaining to satisfy the landowner’s requirements,” he said. These requirements, they said, are gradually being addressed as quickly as possible. “One was a complete site survey with a traffic assess- PHOTO: NARROMINE STAR. ment to ensure that the infra- more issue passed.” structure of the surrounding Inland Petrol, Mr Mooring town would not be negatively said, are well aware of the imaffected. pact the delays are having on “With the survey complet- the local community and the ed on Friday and the report fi- economy, and are seeking to nalised Tuesday, we have one overcome further setbacks to

“We would have been servicing your community from day one if we had been permitted to do so.
“Inland Petroleum is excited to be part of your community at the fi rst chance. The team will keep working hard to give you the facilities and employment opportunities you deserve,” he said.
Cr Davies said in his letter, that “a special type of incompetence” in the state bureaucracy, rather than at council, had been the cause of delays of getting the new facility up-and-running.
“Not only has the project faltered, it’s still in the hands of the NSW Department of Transport,” his letter said.
“I have contacted the secretary of the department who, like all other before, has given me an assurance that it will be resolved in three weeks.”
He added that, regaining a fully serviced petrol station for the community, was always council’s top-priority.
the site’s re-opening, they said. “The landowner has acknowledged the need for this site to be operational and has allocated extra internal resources to make this move quickly.
“We, Inland Petroleum, are sorry. None of our team has had to experience what you have had to endure over the last two and a half months.” The company, however, is looking forward to the reopen-

SEEN as a means of keeping drug addicts out of prison and into rehabilitation, the fi rst regional NSW “Drug Court” commenced sittings at Dubbo on Monday, February 20. Participants sentenced under the Court undergo a minimum 12-month program under supervision – including mandatory detoxification in jail
and drug testing up to three times a week in the community – while receiving coordinated treatment and interventions to address the underlying causes of drug dependency and offending. As part of this program, participants also receive assistance to access housing, income stability, train-
ing, employment, relationship and parenting supports, with the ultimate goal of reintegrating them back into the community. Up to 80 eligible adult offenders will be able to undertake the program at the NSW Drug Court at Dubbo at any one time. Dubbo Drug Court is a much-anticipated addition to the region’s justice system, Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders said at its fi rst “ceremonial sitting”. “The opening of the Dubbo drug court is a significant step forward and will change many lives for the better,” Mr Saunders said. “The Drug Court has proved to be very efficient at driving down crime, and the intensive rehabilitation that it provides costs less than sending offenders to prison,” he added. A joint justice and health intervention, the Drug Court has been operating in NSW since 1999. “Success in the Drug Court program takes commitment and hard work, but it is a tried-and-tested program which helps break the cycle of dependency and reoffending and can hand people their lives back,” he said. The Dubbo Drug Court registry will be open five days per week and supervised urine drug testing will be run from the registry three days per week (Monday, Tuesday and Friday).
Health and wealth benefits of fishing IN good news for one of our most popular local sports, a national social and economic survey has shown that one-in-five Australians participate in recreational fishing every year. Benefits of fishing includes, improved well-being and a contribution of about 100,000 jobs and $11 billion to the Australian economy. The National Social and Economic Survey of Recreational Fishers, jointly conducted by ABARES, the University of Canberra and the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation, is the fi rst national survey of its type in more than 20 years. ABARES Executive Director, Dr Jared Greenville, said the survey provides a contemporary picture of recreational fishing in Australia, including information on participation rates, as well as the contribution to the economy and society. “A total of 4.2 million or one in five adult Australians were estimated to participate in recreational fishing

Australians were estimated to spend 28 million days fishing each year. While most recreational fishers fish fewer than five days a year, a small proportion fish more than 52 days a year. “Recreational fishing was estimated to contribute over 100,000 jobs and over $11 billion per year (including direct and indirect contributions) to the Australian economy,” he said. “Recreational fishers were found to have, on average, higher levels of wellbeing than non-fishers, and those who fish more often have higher wellbeing,” Recreational fishing appeared to support positive social connections, nature connection, relaxation and

Political News & Opinion COULTON’S ULTON’S CATCH TCH UP Comment ment by K COULTON, MARK Federal ral Member for Parkes arkes
Local roads and community infrastructure funding details finally released I’VE been calling on the Labor government to advise councils regarding the amount of funding each could expect to receive through phase four of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program. I was pleased to see the details of this critical program fi nally confi rmed. While I welcome the news that $500 million in LRCI funding originally promised to councils will be delivered, further details are needed for the extra $250 million which was announced in the October budget. Until I see more details, I will continue to have questions about the methodology Labor plans to use to determine where this money goes.
Melanoma ON Monday, February 13, I had the privilege of making a speech in parliament about the importance of prevention and early treatment of melanomas. It was a subject very close to my heart as on Tuesday, February 14, I had a melanoma and two basal cell carcinomas removed from my head. As someone who represents an electorate with great exposure to the sun, I have been all too aware of the danger of skin cancers. This was my second bout with skin cancer in the last year and a half, so I do encourage everyone to get a reg-

Regional communities left in blackspots by Labor
I WAS truly disappointed to see that regional communities of western NSW have been left out in the latest round of mobile blackspot funding, with Labor prioritising areas in their own seats. Communications minister Michelle Rowland has chosen Labor electorates for 25 out of 26 available grants in the state under the ‘Improving Mobile Coverage Round’ of the Mobile Black Spots Program. It’s unbelievable to me that some of the areas which need it most have been completely left out of this funding. None of the funding has gone into seats like Farrer, Riverina or Parkes – not a cent. New “resilience” project funds for St Augustine’s Primary kids
TEACHING “resilience” in children is one of the new trends in education, with a five-month well-being program recently introduced for students at St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School in Narromine. The school recently received nearly $50,000 for the delivery of the “Kalm Kids” program for students in Year Three, Four, Five, and Six. School Principal, Renee Matheson, said the funding would make a big difference to the students at St Augustine’s. “I was surprised when I found out we’d been successful in securing the funding! I was thrilled and it was very exciting to share the news with the staff,” Mrs Matheson said. “After COVID, coming back to school has been difficult for some of our little students, but our mission is really to build these skills and this program will affirm the things we’re already doing at our school,” she added. The Children and Young
project how to remain calm, confident, and resilient in tough times, State Member for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders said. “Narromine has been hit hard by COVID disruptions, drought, and floods in recent years and, unfortunately, our children are not immune from the turbulence and the uncertainty we’ve all experienced,” Mr Saunders said. “The Kalm Kids program, gives children the opportunity to express their feelings and develop strategies like breathing and visualisation to overcome any stress, anxieties, or other issues they may be dealing with,” he added. New initiative to help students at St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School remain calm and positive, State Member for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders, with School Principal, Renee Matheson. aster Recovery Arrangements.

“If we can teach children these strategies now, around resilience and regulating their own emotions, hopefully that
will be a lifelong skill and help them to face future challenges they’ll face in their lives,” Mrs Matheson said. The program aims to teach the pupils at the school in the
“Projects like this are a great example of how we can help young people recover, build resilience and improve wellbeing by providing them with the tools and resources they need to become the best version of themselves!” he concluded.

New facilities finally offer league girls the home-ground advantage FOR Narromine junior rugby league girls’ teams, every match, is an away game. An explosion in the number of girls now playing competitive sports locally has created a lag in appropriate facilities, which has meant that junior girls league-tag players have had to play all their games in Dubbo. However, a recently announced $122,293 grant under the Female Friendly Sport Facilities and Lighting Upgrades Program will help Narromine Junior Jets Rugby League Club to deliver female-friendly changerooms at Noel Powell Oval. Keen to get the work started now, Narromine Junior Jets president Tim Roberts said that the club is aiming to have the upgrade completed in time for Round One of the competition this year on Saturday, April 29, so as to save the girls’ teams from the excess travel of previous years caused by the lack of these facilities. “We’ve got a lot of girls playing league-tag who have to play every game in Dubbo at the moment. Often the boys are playing in Narromine, but the girls have to play in Dubbo,
without that home-ground support,” Mr Roberts explained. “We want to be able to host some of those league tag games out here. It makes it a much more engaging experience for them, when you can feel part of a club and feel that atmosphere! We’re very appreciative to get the grant – this means we can really bring these facilities up to fi rst class standards!” he added. Announcing the grant, Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders said, “The Narromine community loves its sport, and has a long, proud history of strong female representation in sports from running to rugby. “It’s vital we give everyone the opportunity to be involved in sport, but the junior amenities here at Cale Oval are quite dilapidated and can’t accommodate both boys and girls. “With this upgrade, the Narromine Junior Jets will finally be able to host female competitions, gala days, clinics and trials throughout the year, meaning better opportunities for young women and girls across the Narromine region,” he concluded.

Narromine site for new emergency communications upgrade EMERGENCY communications in the region are being bolstered with Narromine recently named as the location of one of two new two new radio transmission towers in the central west. The two sites (the other is at and Mount Bocoble south of Mudgee), aim to provide emergency services organisations with a single, integrated network on which to communicate. The upgrades are part of the NSW Telco Authority’s 300 new and enhanced radio communications sites across the State designed to expand the Public Safety Network (PSN) under the Critical Communications Enhancement Program (CCEP). The network expansion was the biggest investment in critical communications infrastructure by the NSW Government in a generation, Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government, Victor Dominello, said. The project to expand the PSN includes 675
new and enhanced radio communications sites, Mr Dominello added. “During an emergency, every second counts and the new radio sites will make it easier for our local emergency services to communicate when it matters most.” Next to Australia’s triple zero emergency hotline, the PSN is the most critical communications network in NSW, fielding an average of around 1.3 million radio communications calls per month. “It’s technology that saves lives and, by expanding the footprint of this critical infrastructure, we are ensuring frontline responders have a more reliable network to help keep people and places safe,” Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders said. “PSN sites were crucial in protecting communities and keeping emergency services connected during the widespread 2022 flood events and the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfi res,” he added.

Cleaning-up Gin Gin Reserve and Macquarie River riparian zones MAJOR restoration works on the Macquarie River and at Narromine aims to repair serious riverine damage to banks and waterways left devastated by last year’s flooding. The work includes $39,785 for OzFish Unlimited to restore three Wambuul Macquarie River reserves around Wellington and Geurie, in partnership with Mid-Macquarie Landcare as part of the NSW Government’s $2.4 million Riparian Restoration program. Major local restoration will also see Narromine Shire Council funded $6300 to remove invasive weeds, including green cestrum and castor oil plants, that have overgrown the Gin Gin Weir reserve.
Council will then partner with local Landcare and other volunteers to re-plant groundcover native shrubs and plants to improve plant diversity at the site. They are part of 50 individual initiatives being delivered across regional NSW by Landcare and natural resource management (NRM) organisations, focussing on specific areas of decline and degradation caused by, not only the almost unprecedented storm events of 2022, but years of drought, bushfi res, and rain. “When we look around our neighbourhoods, it’s not hard to see just how dilapidated these important riparian zones have become after being smashed by continuous flood-
ing, bushfi res and drought,” Minister for Agriculture, Dugald Saunders said. “Our rivers are the lifeblood of our regional communities and the Wambuul Macquarie is no exception. “This funding will make a real on-the-ground difference to landholders who have seen parts of the riverbank washed away, while also creating a better habitat for our wildlife,” he said. Organisations involved will be undertaking grass-roots projects designed to restore and future-proof damaged riparian areas, such as tree planting and other minor onfarm erosion works, to help mitigate erosion and ensure that riverbanks and the wider
ecosystems are healthy. Landcare NSW CEO Turlough Guerin said that Landcare groups will use the funding to ensure landscapes are prepared for future disasters. “Landcare’s extensive network will deliver projects such as riverbank and stream restoration, on-farm erosion works and tree planting, to help mitigate erosion and ensure riverbanks and the wider ecosystems are healthy,” Mr Guerin said. “A resilient community is one that can withstand and bounce back from natural disasters by engaging and supporting each other, and that is what Landcare does.” OzFish Central Murray Darling Basin Project Manager,
Bron Powell, said that OzFish Unlimited will also provide chemical and fi rst aid training to some Indigenous rangers, “hopefully getting more Indigenous people involved in bush and river regeneration”.
“There’s more erosion after the drought, with the loss of trees, and floods coming along after that have only made the erosion worse,” Bron said.
“We need more native trees and shrubs along the river to restore those riverbanks and make the river healthier for native fish so we can see their populations bounce back again!” Works are expected to be completed by September 2023.

Trangie performing artists pilot led to “Not a Dress Rehearsal” By DAVID DIXON A PILOT theatre project trialled at Trangie Central School last year has led to a summer holiday camp for young performers from throughout the region. The recent “Not a Dress Rehearsal” (NaDR) Summer Camp at Lake Burrendong was a huge success in performing arts for regional youth, as an antidote to three years of COVID-19 lockdowns that hamstrung so many efforts to offer face-to-face opportunities in this program. The summer camp is part of Orana Arts Inc’s partnership with Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP), offering professional industry skill development and knowledge to regional youth from across the State who are interested in all aspects of the performing arts. Trangie teacher Scott McDonald was a central player in both the pilot scheme and at the camp held in early January, Camilla Ward from Orana Arts Inc said. “Scott was involved in the project that we held at his school in the middle of last year,” Mrs Ward explained.
“We were working at Trangie in the June-July school holidays with a group of kids from Trangie, and it went so well,” she added. She said that the five-day camp at Lake Burrendong for a group of 24 performers aged from 9 to 17 was a major win, with the participants all taking the opportunity to express their creative energies and gain the perspective of ATYP tutor Sophie Kelly, and with Mr McDonald as co-camp coordinator. “As well as kids from Trangie, we also had students from all around the State, from Byron Bay to Leeton, it was fantastic,” Mrs Ward said. Working on character development, improvisation, storytelling and staging performances, the students devised and brought together a half-hour-long theatre-in-the-round piece on the last day of camp, performed in front of parents and guests. “The group eventually produced a video as an original piece, written and performed by the students, for the final performance that left everyone in the audience with goosebumps,” Ms Ward said.

Sentinel chickens warn of mosquito encephalitis danger this summer…
BEWARE of mozzie danger this summer, central west residents have been warned. Detection of the deadly Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) virus in mosquitoes at Macquarie Marshes and in senti-
nel chickens at Forbes, has led to Health Department calls for locals to protect themselves from mosquito bites. Communities across Western NSW should take make all possible actions to avoid being
bitten as summer continues, Western NSW Local Health District’s Director of Public Health, Priscilla Stanley said. “People are still enjoying the warm weather and spending plenty of time outdoors, so it is incredibly important that everyone takes appropriate steps to protect against mosquito bites,” Ms Stanley said. “There is no vaccination or specific treatment for MVE and the best way to avoid infection is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, which are most active between dusk and dawn.” Ms Stanley said that most people who are infected with the virus that causes MVE, do not have any symptoms. “Only a small proportion of people infected will experience symptoms, symptoms to look out for include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhoea and muscle aches,” Ms Stanley said.
“Rarely, it causes severe neurological illness with headache, convulsions and reduced consciousness in some cases. Among those who get a severe infection, some may die or have lifelong neurological complications,” she added. “There is risk from both MVE and Japanese encephalitis virus in the District and people should protect themselves from mosquito bites and get the Japanese encephalitis vaccine if they’re eligible. NSW Health is further expanding free access to Japanese encephalitis vaccine to ensure residents living in high-risk regional areas are protected this mosquito season.” Locals are urged to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites by: wearing light, loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts, long pants and covered footwear and socks, especially around dusk and dawn. applying repellent to all ar-
eas of exposed skin, using repellents that contain DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. re-applying repellent regularly, particularly after swimming, being sure to always apply sunscreen fi rst and then apply repellent. • using insecticide sprays, vapour dispensing units and mosquito coils to repel mosquitos (mosquito coils should only be used outside). covering openings such as windows and doors with insect screens and checking there are no have gaps in them. removing items that might collect water (such as old tyres, empty pots) outside your house where mosquitoes can breed. improving drainage on your property so that water does not become stagnant MVE virus is spread by mosquitos from infected animals to humans as the virus cannot be transmitted between humans.

Sport RACING NG REPORT ORT By COLIN HODGES
Raced Saturday, February 18 BRETT Robb from Dubbo was recently acknowledged for his substantial talent as a trainer when his five-year-old gelding, Adam’s First Pick, was able to win at Coonabarabran on Saturday despite not having raced for two years.
Coonabarabran’s Summer Race Meeting Having been bred by Wally Prout from Gilgandra and raced and trained by Robb, Adam’s First Pick overcame the outside barrier to lead all the way in the 1100-metres Maiden Plate. Challenged in the straight, Adam’s First Pick (Clayton Gallagher, in from $8.50 to $5.50) pulled-away to win by almost a length from Flying Miracle (Jake Pracey- Pracey-Holmes-Holmes, at $5.50) with over three lengths to You Like (Ben Osmond on the $1.55 favourite). Dubbo trainer, Clint Lundholm, has also been churn-
ing-out the winners over recent months and, at Coonabarabran, it was So Extra and In The Road who both came home fi rst. Sharing the lead at the top of the straight, So Extra (Jake Pracey-Holmes-Holmes, the $3 favourite) broke clear to score by nearly two lengths from Nicka Narcells (Camille Houlgatte at $6.50) and Inferno Miss, (Will Stanley at $3.90) in the 900-metres Barrons Dunlop Dash. Ridden by apprentice Will Stanley, In The Road (at $7.50) had a cosy run third on the rails, before beating Super
Chance (Jake Barrett at $8) and the race leader, Minimal (Ben Osmond at $6) in the 1100-metres Imperial Hotel Have A Schooner In Coona Benchmark 50 Handicap. Straight to the front in the 1400-metres Warrumbungle Maiden Handicap, the Ian Holland, Coonamble-trained Mr Cosmic (Jake Barrett at $5) held-on to beat the strong-fi nishing Heavenly Spirit (Hollie Hull, the $2 favourite) by a neck with over three lengths to the third placed Smart ‘N’ Ritzy (Ken Dunbar at $19). It was an all-the-way win for the Brett Thompson, Gul-
Wins for Harding and Green at golf Contributed by NORM LEWIS THE weekly Gerries competition was played on Saturday in rather warm conditions with a total of 21 players participating – seven ladies and 14 men. The ladies played the back nine on the course, which was in great order following the rainstorm during the week. Dale Harding and Vicki Gainsford returned cards of 20 points with a countback needed to decide the winner. The decision went to Harding with Gainsford in second place with the girls NAGA prize going to Anne Harmer on 14 points. There were no winners of the NTP (nearest-the-pin) events for women
or men, so the prizes are added to both jackpot pools. Over on the front nine, the men battled it out with competition keen and some great scores. It was said, that that some players recorded their best scores ever, but did not make the prize-winners list. Ron Green topped the leaderboard with 26 points to collect the major prize with Peter Gainsford making it a family double when he collected second prize in the men’s comp with 25 points. Mal McIntyre easily took the NAGA for the men with a score of only nine points. Attention then moved to the Pool table where six men competed in the weekly competition. The preliminary round saw fa-
vourites, Chris Harding and Greg Kearines, defeat Ron Jackson and Norm Lewis to advance to the fi nal where they met Bob Fletcher and Terry Willis This match saw Chris and Greg race to a lead with only one ball left when “Fletch” started sinking balls right up to the black which he missed and lost the game. Chris Harding and Greg Kearines were declared the Pool Champs for the week in a top morning’s entertainment. This coming weekend, the ladies will play the front nine and the fellas are on the back with the usual hit off at 9.30am. See you all at the 19th!
Top-notch numbers for Business House Comp Contributed by NORM LEWIS LAST week, there was a top field of 73 players for the local Business House Golf Competition. With only three weeks left in this event, there are six teams within four points of each other in the battle for supremacy. Teams NDT and DOZER CHICKS which are both on 48 points, lead the comp by two from team GERRIES on 46. Then follows team DEEP DIVOTS and team EPIROC on 45, and team GONADS on 44. It will be a real battle over the fi nal three weeks to decide the winners. On Wednesday last, team GREY GONADS won the day with a score of 20.5. The daily winners were Dan Coen on 25, Des Weir on 24, T Gainsford on 24, Steve Barlow on 23 and L Reid on 23. The NTP (nearest-the-pin) winners were, on the third, Stu Crawford; the ninth, Dan Coen; the 10th,
Jenny Fitzgerald; and on the 17th, Josh Barlow. Long drive winner was Doug Potter on the fourth with no-one on the card on the 11th. Good luck to all teams as they battle it out for victory over the final three weeks with the last round scheduled for Wednesday, March 8. WEEKEND GOLF: No doubt, the warm weather and threat of storms reduced the fields in our weekend competitions. On Saturday, only 12 players took part in the Four-Ball Aggregate event with the winners Shane Liddell and Peter Hutchinson on 75 points. Second-place went to Chris Holden and S Skinner on 66 points. The NTP on the ninth, went to Shane Liddell and, on the 17th, to Robert Burns. The long drive on the 11th went to C Holden with the Jackpot Hole on Saturday, the 17th, seeing the prize go to Robert Burns.
On Sunday, a total of 12 players went round in the 18-Hole Par event. Winner on the day was Lewis Goldman on Plus 1 and Ashley Bullo Square, with the card, took second place. NEXT WEEK-END: On Saturday, the major event is an 18-Hole Stableford and, on Sunday, the event is an Irish Stableford. The Club’s annual programme is being drawn-up and should be available in March. JUNIOR CLINIC: The Junior Clinic was held on Sunday morning with a good rollup. It is on again this Sunday with a 9.30am start. This Clinic is great for the juniors, and those responsible for the running of the clinic, are to be congratulated for introducing our youngsters to the great game of golf. Well, that’s all for this week – see you at the 19th Hole!
gong-trained Toongi Bound (Shayleigh Ingelse at $6.50) in defeating Blue Channel (Camille Houlgatte at $7) and The Towers (Ben Osmond at $11) in the 1400-metres Benchmark 50 Handicap.
Stating as a $41 outsider, the Sally Torrens, Gunnedahtrained Sligo Queen, under strong riding from Andrew Banks, came from well back to win the 1600-metres Imperial Hotel Class One and Maiden Plate from Barry The Poet (Clayton Gallagher at $2.20) and Conversations (Jake Barrett at $20).
