Trangie celebrates cultural centre expansions and Mullah Street units By LUCIE PEART FRIDAY, July 14 was a celebration of the Trangie community with the opening of extensions to the Wungunja Cultural Centre and new First Nations residential units. Culminating in over twoyears of work, driven by the Trangie Local Aboriginal Land Council (TLALC), both projects represent nearly $3 million worth of capital investment in the community. TLALC CEO Terrie Milgate said, “the extensions to the Wungunja Cultural Centre were funded by the Australian government’s road safety funding for Driver Reviver sites with a contribution of $130,014 made to provide additional rest rooms to meet the demand when groups visit the centre”. “Further funding was made available from the NSW Aboriginal Land Council Community Fund with $150,000 put towards the extensions of the building. TLALC contributed approximately $200,000 towards the project,” she said.

Katie Powell the 2023 Young Woman By LUCIE PEART A SELL-OUT crowd enjoyed a night of celebration at Saturday’s 2023 Inland Petroleum Narromine Show Ball. The Narromine Show Society were to be congratulated for hosting 150 people at local eatery, the Soul Food Depot, which was decked-out in a 1970s Disco theme. Soul Food also catered for the event with guests dancing the night away to tunes by DJ Rob Zee. Event organisers said the addition of a photo booth was a real hit with guests, however, professional snapper, Ash Molloy of Copper Co Photography was also on-hand to capture the important night. The highlight of the event, was the announcement of Katie Powell as the 2023 Narromine AgShows NSW Young Woman Competition winner. There were four entrants in this year’s competition – all great representatives of the Narromine community, bringing a diverse range of skills and interests. The competition was judged by Meg Austin, Josie Anderson, and Jed McEvoy. The 2023 winner, Ms Powell, is an education student at Charles Sturt University (Albury). She was joined in the competition by runner-up pharmacist Meg Horan, apprentice cement renderer Amity Gordon, and nurse

Emma Housden. Narromine’s 2022 Young Woman, Maddy Preston was the night’s MC and, as the outgoing representative, she was able to pass-on some of her knowledge to this year’s entrants. As reported in last week’s Narromine Star, Ms

Preston is also a foundation member of the new women’s networking group – Western Rural Connect. Ms Powell said the whole night was an empowering and aspiring display of young women with a passion for small communities. She said

the competition is not only a great way for her to personally put her name out across the State as a proud Narromine representative, but it will enable her to help advocate for her hometown. Continued to page 3

Inland Rail changes priority on local construction sections By ANDREW TARRY LOCAL landholders have again been left wondering after Inland Rail announced a change in construction priorities, which now offers no timeline for any ‘boots on the ground’ in the Na r rom i ne -to -Na r rabr i (N2N) section which traverses the Narromine shire. The ambitious Inland Rail Project and the communities which are impacted by its develop-ment have become all too aware of the many complications, delays and changes that have occurred - particularly in the past decade during the design and assessment phases. Inland Rail has announced that the project will prioritise construction of a 39-kilometre section of greenfield track in the Beveridge (Victoria) to Parkes (NSW) section. In April 2023, ‘The Delivery of Inland Rail: An Independent Review’ (Schott) - was completed and handed to the federal government. The government has now announced its plans for the many recommendations and criticisms of the project within the report. In late June 2023, the

government handed the ARTC a new interim state of expectations where the government “has reaffi rmed its objectives and expectations for ARTC and the future delivery of Inland Rail”. The government is also establishing a new subsidiary – Inland Rail Pty Ltd, “which will govern the delivery of the Inland Rail”. Government action on the review comes as welcome news for regional communities. The project has seemingly been in a form of limbo after the review was released in April. The government has now announced what the next step will be - the creation of the subsidiary, and the infrastructure project will continue to require input and support from all levels of government. Narromine Shire Council mayor Craig Davies said, “council is committed to working together with the federal government and ARTC in respect to the review of the timeline and recom-mendations in order to see this infrastructure project progress into the future”. “Council anticipates there will be further economic and development opportunities and ben-

efits as a result of Inland Rail for the agricultural, freight, and transport sectors in this region,” he said. In addition to the new measures announced for Inland Rail, which are in line with the review recommendations, the Australian government has stated it is “committed to ensuring Inland Rail Pty Ltd has the necessary expertise and independent oversight required to deliver on the government’s objectives for Inland Rail”. “Inland Rail Pty Ltd will have its own dedicated board of directors appointed by the ARTC. The six-member board includes the chair of ARTC as a non-executive director. The members of the new board have been chosen for their skills, qualifications, knowledge, and experience, including in the delivery of nationally significant freight infrastructure projects.” As part of the government’s response to the review the minister for infrastructure, transport, regional development, and local government Catherine King said, “We are making good on our commitment to act on the recommendations of the

Independent Review of Inland Rail”. “The establishment of Inland Rail Pty Ltd and the updated statement of expectations, are examples of this government getting on with the job to refresh the approach to delivering Inland Rail to ensure it is adequately funded and resourced. I am confident in the direction provided by the statement of expectations and in the chosen board members, who will bring valuable industry insights and expertise to ensure the Albanese government delivers on its commitments to Inland Rail.” While the fi nance minister Katy Gallagher said, “the government has established a dedicated subsidiary company with an experienced and skilled board of directors to ensure Inland Rail is appropriately managed”. “The government’s updated statement of expectations brings ARTC and Inland Rail in-line with highest standards of governance, transparency, and accountability for corporate and government-owned entities.” The winter Inland Rail newsletter is inserted in this edition

The 2023 Inland Petroleum Narromine Show Ball committee. From page 1 Ms Powell is also no stranger to the Show movement, having long been involved with the Narromine Show Society as a volunteer steward. On Show Day, she can often be found in the poultry sheds and beyond lending a hand. The Powell name is also somewhat of a legacy in the local Show competition, as her sister, Annabelle, won the formerly-named Narromine “Miss Showgirl Competition” in 2019.

Josie Anderson, Marie Pobje and Keiley Noble.

“I have been able to watch the competition’s process, particularly over the past five years since my sister won; I am able to follow in her footsteps in that way,” she said. Ms Powell said her love of creative and performing arts, matched with her teaching skills, have given her the confidence to stand-up to address a crowd, and will enable her to enjoy the opportunities gained from the Young Women Competition experience. Although currently in her last year of university in Albury, she has plans to return

to the central west at the completion of her studies. She added that she is honoured to represent her hometown, and to hear from other young women and learn from their stories. “Narromine is my home, I’m proud to be able to advocate for my community; the community that helped me grow-up.” Ms Powell also praised the other three entrants in this year’s competition. “They are all such great advocates for Narromine; they are so supportive and it’s so heartwarming to have people

around you that support you, no matter what. “I am looking forward to working alongside other women in similar communities at the zone level which, excitedly, will be hosted by the Narromine Show Society in February 2024,” said Ms Powell. “Being around so many strong like-minded women, it’s so empowering to listen to their stories and successes from similar small communities,” she added. Along with her usual steward duties at the upcoming Narromine Show events in

September, Ms Powell will now also undertake more public representative duties as the 2023 Narromine AgShows NSW Young Woman. Until her appearance at the Zone Six Final in February, Ms Powell said she will have to keep her ears to the ground, being aware of local issues, listening to the community, and gaining different perspectives. “I am also looking forward to working with competition co-coordinators Sarah Weir and Sara Gilchrist, who will help me prepare for the zone final,” she concluded.

Cr Grace Toomey and Uncle Bill Philips were in attendance to officially cut the ribbon to open the Wungunja Cultural Centre extensions. Narromine Shire Council mayor Craig Davies has con-

gratulated the TLALC on delivering this major expansion to the Trangie community. He was quoted in a previous edition of the Narromine Star saying, “thousands of artefacts have been collected and donated to the cultural centre, but the space has never been large enough to display all but a tiny portion of them. This expansion will see more artefacts go on display for the public to enjoy”. “The cultural centre is gaining a reputation for its won-

derful cultural items, and its collaboration with the universities so keen to catalogue the collection and the many visitors it is attracting.” After the centre opening, the crowd moved to the Mullah Street units. Another huge project undertaken by the TLALC, the new $2.27 million facility will provide six one-bedroom units for First Nations people, allowing locals to stay in their community as they age and provide new places for those wishing

to move to Trangie. The project was funded by the NSW government’s Aboriginal Community Housing Investment Fund. At the official opening of the units, the Aboriginal dance group again performed for the crowd with Uncle Colin Quinn and Famey Williams, the CEO of the Aboriginal Housing Office, cutting the ribbon to officially open the new facility. Both official openings were closed with a traditional Smoking Ceremony.

COULTON’S ULTON’S CATCH TCH UP

Energy efficiency grants

Comment ment by K COULTON, MARK ral Member Federal arkes for Parkes

Strengthening Rural Communities I’M pleased to welcome funding for several groups in the Parkes electorate under the Australian government and Foundation For Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) program. These grants are awarded for projects that support small yet vital community needs, disaster resilience and COVID-19 recovery initiatives. Communities from the Parkes electorate received funding in each of the three SRC funding streams of round 16: Small and Vital: Collie CWA Cultivating Community Connections - $10,000. Dunedoo Historical Museum Digitising of Museum Catalogue - $3758. Western Landcare NSW Inc. Broken Hill 2023 Western Warriors - $10,000. Prepare and Recover - 2022 Floods: Lower Lachlan Community Services Inc Festival of the Lakes 2023 - $10,000. Rebuilding Regional Communities - Micro: Coolah Historical and Tourism Society’s Cunningham 200-year Celebration - $10,000. ORISCON Dubbo’s Festival of Colours 2024 - $5000. Round 18 is now open, with applications closing in August.

AROUND UND THE ELECTORATE TORATE Comment nt by DUGALD D SAUNDERS, ERS, State Member ember bo for Dubbo DON’T forget to sign the petition and make your voice heard to help save the Regional Seniors Travel Card! This incredible program has been a lifeline for over one million eligible seniors in regional NSW since 2020, providing them with $250 to cover essential transportation expenses. It helps them access important

IT’S wonderful to see that several businesses in the Parkes electorate have successfully applied for funding through round one of the Australian government’s Energy Efficiency Grants for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises program. These grants provide up to $25,000 to support businesses to upgrade or replace equipment to improve their energy efficiency. The aim is to assist industries in reducing their energy use and emissions, and I’m pleased to see the government making grants available, as with fi nancial pressures bearing down on so many this is not something easily achieved without support. Eight projects received funding in the Parkes electorate, including a number of projects for businesses in Dubbo. There was a high level of interest in round one and I am informed that a second round of grants with more available funding is planned for 2024.

New amenities for Gwydir Fitness Centre THE Gwydir Fitness Centre has been fitted out with new amenities thanks to phase three of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program. I was pleased to cut the ribbon last week to officially open the new and improved amenities with fi nance manager for Gwydir Shire Council, Graham Cutmore. This program was initiated under the coalition government in order to support local governments to deliver improvements in their areas, so I’m thrilled to see practical outcomes in towns across the Parkes electorate.

appointments and maintain their independence, while managing cost-ofliving pressures. But now, the future of this vital program hangs in the balance! We need your sup-port to urge the NSW Labor government to continue the Regional Seniors Travel Card. Every signature counts! Go to the Save the Travel Card website to sign the petition. LOCAL high school students can show off their creative talents in the Parliament of NSW’s short film competition – Parli-Flicks. This annual event is now open for entries, with students asked to submit a one minute short film

addressing this year’s theme “Should the voting age be lowered?” This year’s theme is an interesting one to explore, and I can’t wait to see what our local students come up with. This is the third year Parli-Flicks has been held. It’s a creative way for students to get involved in learning about and expressing their understanding of our democratic system. I encourage all students to be imaginative. Your entry can be comical, fictional or take more of a documentary style. Judges will be looking for entries that stand out from the crowd. Entries close in August. For more information, go to the NSW Parliamentary

Education and Engagement website. APPLICATIONS close TOMORROW for the Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship! Local first year apprentices facing financial or personal hardship can be supported with a $15,000 scholarship to undertake their trade and study. Whether you need to purchase new tools, cover fuel or car maintenance, or pay for additional study, these scholarships have helped people across our region over-come personal barriers to fi nish their apprenticeships and follow their trade calling. For more information visit the education NSW website.

APPLICATIONS are closing soon for the Community War Memorials Fund! The purpose of the fund is to help conserve, repair and protect war memorials across NSW to support community commemoration, by funding projects that follow best practice conservation principles and processes. The grants are targeted at organisations who are responsible for the management of war memorials in NSW. Applications close next week. To fi nd out more information, and to apply, go to the NSW government website.

Until next time, Dugald

MAYOR’S AYOR’S ESSAGE MESSAGE Comment mment by CR CRAIG DAVIES,, rromine Narromine re mayorr Shire

TRANGIE Aboriginal Lands Council (TALC) have celebrated their recent successes with the opening of both the extensions to the Wungunja Cultural Centre and also the opening of the magnificent Indigenous aged care facility last Friday. Over one hundred locals and visitors celebrated these events in magnificent sunshine so fitting for the day. With a combined capital expenditure in excess of $2.75 million, they are two projects that will give lasting benefits to both Trangie and the Narromine Shire for generations

Two Trangie success stories, with Wungunja opening, and TV visit to come. Executive Officer, Terrie Milgate, has led a cohesive team of Board members, whose focus has been to improve both services and amenity for Indigenous people in Trangie and the Shire generally. It has been a massive project that could only ever have seen success with this collaborative and cohesive approach. TALC have been recognised as the leading Lands Council In NSW for obvious reasons and this highlights the imperative of such an organisation showing the vision and leadership, so vital for success. They have worked towards creating a body working harmoniously with both

Council and the broader community, and their approach should be a guide for all such organisations. Whilst the leadership of Terrie Milgate has been a vital ingredient in the success of these projects, the work done by TALC Chair, Di Smith, and her very supportive board, should never be underestimated. For a small Lands Council to take on a development of these proportions, shows the competence and confidence that is a major function of the make of this board, and they deserve the congratulations and appreciation of the entire community. Personally, I’m looking forward to the next project, that

Ute dumped in river; man wanted for robbery POLICE attached to Central West Police District have commenced an investigation following reports of an aggravated robbery on Parkes. At about 5pm on Monday, July 17, 2023, a man armed with a knife attended on home on Moulden Street, Parkes, making threats and demanding cash from the occupant. The man allegedly assaulted the occupant – a 35-year-old man – before he demanded he drive his utility to an ATM

and withdraw cash. Upon arrival at the ATM the 35-yearold man ran from the location and contacted police and the man fled the location in the utility. The utility was found on the riverbank at Narromine on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 and was seized for forensic examination. As inquiries continue, anyone with information is urged to call Parkes Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

I hope can be announced over the course of the next 12 months, that will be a Cultural Awareness program that can bring further benefits to our region and is truly exciting in its vision. Also, I recently received an email from one of the directors of Total Control, The TV series that was fi lmed in Trangie during June. It was pointed-out that, during their stay, the cast and crew spent in excess of $340,000 in Trangie, Narromine, and Dubbo, highlighting the benefit to our local communities of having the fi lming take place locally. Not only have the Trangie locals met some wonderful TV Industry people, we have seen

the fi nancial benefits of having the cast and crew in town.

A massive “thanks” to the Narromine Shire staff who helped tirelessly during the 10 days of filming, and in the lead-up, that has given the town and Shire a reputation for getting behind the project with the potential for more to come.

Can’t wait to see the show being on TV early in the new year, with a number of locals featuring along with scenes of the town — Trangie at its best!

— Mayor, Councillor Craig Davies, Narromine Shire Council

Community News Good News About Belinda and Jeremy Jesus; is what happily tie the knot “Gospel” means BRIAN’S BIBLE BITS

HOW many brothers and sisters do you have? According to Jesus’ defi nition of “family”, you have too-many siblings to count! Jesus loved everyone like brothers and sisters; he shared his time, food, wisdom, and love, and he said that, whoever does the will of God, is part of his family. So, for about 2000 years, his family has been constantly growing. Have you joined Jesus’ huge family? When you next come to Church, look around. You’re looking at a whole lot of brothers and sisters in Christ. (Mark 3:31–35) The good news! The word “gospel” means “good news”. Mark was saying: “Hey readers and listeners, I have really good news to share with you!” And this was certainly “news”. Jesus’ was still spreading around the world. People were still hearing of this life-changing, history-changing story. Mark was like a journalist delivering the best news in history. Jesus the Messiah. No beating around the bush there. Mark declared it right up front: Jesus is the Messiah; the Saviour whom God had promised for hundreds of years, the Saviour everyone was waiting for. HERE HE IS! The Son of God. In the fi rst line of his story, Mark declared Jesus’ deity. Jesus wasn’t just a good teacher; he wasn’t just a nice guy; he wasn’t just a soldier and king who came to save the people from oppression. HE WAS GOD. He was God in human form. This

was what Mark wanted us all to understand. (Mark 1:1). At the exact moment of Jesus’ death on the Cross, there was an earthquake and the centurions guarding Him were terrified, and exclaimed: “Surely, he was the Son of God!” (Matthew 27:51–54). People mocked Jesus the Messiah as he died. They said he wasn’t really the Son of God. They challenged him to use his so-called power to save himself. Jesus remained silent before them. He could have said: “Just wait. You’ll see!” But he didn’t. When Jesus gave-up his life moments later, the earth shook and faithful people who had died came-up out of their graves. Can you just imagine? Of course, the doubters of the day became instant believers! How could they not? This gives us a glimpse of what will happen when Jesus returns. Many doubters will be-come believers as Jesus shows his power to the world. We don’t have to say: “Just wait. You’ll see!” Jesus will show-us all, when he is ready. Prayer: “Dear God, thank-you for the Bible. We are so grateful that your WORD teaches us about Jesus. Help us to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ around our district today. Amen.” By REVEREND BRIAN SCHMALKUCHE, ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF BATHURST

Sport CHRISTIE AND HOOD CASTLEREAGH LEAGUE, ROUND 10

Jets fail to ground top-comp Terriers! THE unbeaten run of the Gulgong Bull Terriers continued when the Narromine Jets failed to bring them back to earth in the Christie and Hood Castlereagh League match-ofthe-round played at the Jets’ Cale Oval on Saturday. Going into the Boronia Cup Challenge game, it was fi rst against second on the competition ladder. However, the loss by Narromine — combined with big wins by both Cobar and Dunedoo over Coonamble and Binnaway respectively — has seen the Jets slide to fourth position on the ladder as the race hots-up for semi-final berths with only four rounds to be played. The win by Gulgong, was setup by their two front-rowers, Jack Hart and Blake Gorrie, who both had strong games and were the springboard for many of the Terriers’ attacking raids. They also contributed themselves to the scoreboard, with Hart notching-up three tries, and Gorrie one! Long periods of dogged defence by the visitors, may well have been overlooked with the number of tries scored in a match that saw some great attacking flair by both sides. However, in retrospect, those periods of commitment in defence, especially in the first half, did go a long way to inf luencing the final result in a match that was well and truly in the balance up until Gulgong scored with just one minute remaining to seal the victory. The Terriers held down a slender 14-12 lead at half-time, a lead that increased to 20-12 early in the second stanza, before the Jets replied with two converted tries to fi nd themselves in front 24-20 midway through the second half. However, they could not maintain the momentum, and three unanswered tries to the Terriers saw them regain what was a substantive 12-point advantage, with the scoreboard reading 36-24 in their favour. The Jets were not going to die wondering though, and with four minutes to go, Doug Potter, their captain-coach and one of their best on the day, scored a try which he duly converted. With only six points now separating the two teams, it was very much a grandstand fi nish to the game with the final result not secured by the Terriers until their fullback, Ethan Pegus, capped-off a fi ne individual effort in the game, when he latched-on to a bouncing ball from a grubber kick and beat-off some desperate cover defenders in a 30-metre sprint to the tryline. The win now opens-up a handy buffer for the Terriers at the top of the competition ladder in terms of minor premiership honours. The re-

In other games, the Coonabarabran Unicorns made it three wins on the trot, when they won the local derby against the Baradine Magpies that was played-out in front of a very big crowd at Baradine. The 44-24 victory by the Unicorns, places them in a position to draw level in fifth spot with Gilgandra on the competition ladder, should they defeat the Dunedoo Swans in their vital game this Saturday and the Panthers lose to Gulgong. In what is a tight fi nish to the competition, all results in Round 11 games will have a strong effect on the makeup of the competition ladder, with Coonamble at home to Narromine and Baradine hosting Cobar.

GOLF CLUB NOTES

GUB THORNE Day nom’s closing soon; get in now!

Harding leads Club Championships; with final two rounds this weekend

By NORM BOHM GUB THORNE Day is fast-approaching, and those who haven’t nominated yet for this event to be held on Saturday, August 19, should really jump-in and do so, as there aren’t that many spots left. Cost for the day and and all the other information you need to know, can be found on the nomination sheet on the Club’s Noticeboard. In other news, we had a couple of matches in the B-Grade Singles, which resulted in Kane Adams defeating Dwayne Faro in one semi-fi nal clash, and Henry Buttworth also winning through to the fi nal at the expense of Richard Hyde. So, this weekend it will be onto the fi nal at 1.30pm on Saturday, July 22, where Kane and Henry will both be striving to add this title to their CV. The Consistency Singles Round One results included wins for Phil Harding over Danny Carnevale, with Adam Jermyn on the wrong side of the ledger in his clash with Robbie Stanford, and James Daley getting the better of Des Lincoln in the third game. For those wishing to take part in the Zone Four Men’s Pennants which commences in early August, a nomination sheet has been posted on the Club Noticeboard for those wishing to be part of our eight-man squad. Social Bowls this week, again suffered “Mother Nature” stepping-in and putting “the kibosh” on Sunday morning’s Chook Run but, on Thursday, we had a hardy band of 14 take to the greens which, according to those who played, ran pretty quick. The day’s only recipient of a voucher, were the duo of Dwayne Faro and Bob Christoff; well-done, lads! And, fi nally, spare a thought for Don Sullivan, who is going through a bad trough at the moment. Don lost his wife, Josie, during the week, and is currently in Dubbo Base Hospital doing it “tuff ”. Our deepest sympathy on your loss, and we hope you improve shortly. Well, that’s it for me this week; a pretty quiet one but, no doubt, still plenty of action coming-up at the “Bowly”; hope you can be part of it!

By NORM LEWIS OPENING two 18-hole rounds of the 2023 Men’s Club Championships, were played on the weekend. However, the weather was very inclement on both days, and not really conducive to top-quality golf. Tony Harding played exceptionally well on Saturday, though, to record a score of 65; five under-par, enabling him to lead the field into the second round on Sunday. Unfortunately, his second round of 73 (three-over) was not as good as Saturday, but was good-enough to enable him to lead the competition into the fi nal rounds on next weekend. His 36-hole total of 138 (two-under) is sufficient for him to lead the defending Champion, Rob Williams by two shots into the fi nal two rounds next Saturday and Sunday. Williams himself had rounds of 69 and 71 (total: 140) with the stage now set for a thrilling fi nish to this major event. In the B-Grade Championship event, the defending Champion,

Greg Kearines, leads the way on a score of 171 from Ashley Bullock, on 176. The 36-hole handicap leaders are, in A-Grade, Alex Sambrook on 137; from Rob Gainsford on 141. In B-Grade, Ashley Bullock leads from Greg Kearines on 157. The daily competition results are as follows: For the Saturday 18-Hole Strokeplay event of 24 players: Gross First is Tony Harding on 65, second is Rob Williams on 69; Nett First is Alex Sambrook on 65, with Tony Harding on 68. NTP (nearest-the-pin) winners, on the 17th, was Steve Squires; the Long Drive on the fourth was Tony Harding; with the Jackpot Hole on the 10th, not won. For the Sunday 18-Hole Strokeplay event of 17 players; Gross First is Rob Williams on 71, second is Tony Harding on 73; Nett First is Rob Gainsford (on a count-back) from Rob Williams, both on 72. NTP on the 10th winner was Rob

Williams; for the Long Drive on the 11th, the winner was Craig Duff. The drawn Jackpot Hole, the third, was not won. All in all, despite the weather, it was a good weekend for golfers with very good scores recorded. Best of luck to a l l compet itors i n t he f i na l rou nds of t he Club Cha mpionsh ips. One match play event was also decided — Alex Sambrook defeated Ashley Bullock 3-2. In coming events; on Saturday, July 22, the Club Championships Round Three; in conjunction with the Monthly Medal. On Sunday, July 23, the Club Championship final round will be run in conjunction with the Shootout Round Six. The Junior Clinic is also on from 9am. Please note that the course will be closed to social play, on both days of the Championships. That’s all for another week — See you at the 19th!

GERRIES GOLF NOTES

Win For Ferrari; in our first game back By NORM LEWIS IT was great to see the Gerries Golfers back on the course; following the rain and unpleasant conditions of the past couple of weeks, with last Wednesday witnessing some 10 players on-deck for the weekly competition. Winner of the fi rst event back, was Vince Ferrari with a score of 29 points; great round, Vince, you must have enjoyed the break! No doubt, however, the handicapper will look closely at your card and allocate a new handicap for the coming weeks… Col Shepherdson on 24 points took second place, a fair way behind the winner. No golfer, though,

claimed the weekly Nearest-thePin prize, which will now jackpot to next week. Surprisingly, there were a number of contestants in line for the NAGA prize, with Bob Fletcher declared “the winner”. All players were really pleased to be back on the course again, which is in top condition, thanks to our volunteer workers. There were only sufficient players for one match in the weekly Pool competition. Those wily veterans, Ross King and Chris Harding, took on Terry Willis and Bob Fletcher. This latter pair played some fi ne shots, however, they were unable to match the veterans with Ross and Chris winning comfortably to

claim the title of “Pool Champs” for the week. All in all, it was a good afternoon for the Gerries who were pleased to be back on the course. For Wednesday, July 19; the comp was scheduled for the front-nine with the results to appear in next Thursday’s edition of the Star. The Gerries play each Wednesday afternoon with hit-off at 2.30pm. A reminder to all who are members of the Veterans Club, the Annual Narromine Veterans Open Tournament will be held on Thursday, August 3. Details are on the Veterans’ Noticeboard in the Clubhouse. — See you all at the 19th!

“Spirit of Rugby” Shield for Western U11s at Gala event

By GINNI BROWN SOMETIMES, it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game, that matters most. The Western Plains Junior Rugby Union Under 11’s representative team — competing in the NSW Junior Rugby Union State Gala in Sydney over the weekend — also took-out a good sportsmanship award on the way. The team was made-up of players from across the Plains, which included Narromine Junior Gorillas players, Fred Anderson and Lachie Watt. The Gala, supported by The Rugby Club Foundation, featured a total of 64 teams playing in two age groups. The U11 Western Plains team, played a total of five games across the two days, and featured a huge win over Central Coast to

kick-off the weekend. The boys also competed against some very physical teams and did their region proud. More importantly, they also took-out the GR Paton Shield, which is awarded to the Under 11s squad who best demonstrates the values that underpin the game, also known as the “Spirit of Rugby” shield. This award is voted on by all teams in the Under 11s event each year, and recognises not just the players, but the good conduct throughout the event of their coaches, assistants, and supporters. Congratulations therefore, go not only to the team and the coaches, Tim and Mark, but also to the Western Plains families, who also attended the Gala, and supported their children, in a true sporting spirit.

Wonderful Jets Sponsors and Charity Day; with the Terriers coming the home winners By MICK BURNS NARROMINE Jets tookon the Gulgong Terriers on Saturday in front of a great crowd at Cale Oval, to celebrate the Club’s Sponsors and Charity Day. The supporters included a large number of the loyal sponsors who enjoyed their day in the sponsors’ tent; eating delicious food and enjoying cool drinks, while watching three great games of footy. The day started with Reserve Grade kicking-off their 2023 competition. With only a couple of training sessions under their belt; the team played well, considering their limited conditioning. The Reserve Grade competition is a great concept for players that are not able to play a full-season, but still want to be involved in a short-term capacity. In the end, the Jets went down 22-14 with great games had by veteran, Anthony Everett, who came-out of retirement to play with his nephew, Zac, for the fi rst time. “Evo” was ably-supported in the front-row with Andrew Newman, as well as hooker Walter Foreman and, in the backs, the stand-outs were Zahn Chisolm and Jack Powell. The “Reggies” have a bye this week, so that should give them plenty of time to rest their old bones before next week’s game against Baradine. The Ladies League Tag kept-up their hugely successful season with a 64-4 win over the Bull Terriers. These girls have shown, week-in and week-out, that they have some great combinations, which indicates both their commitment and hard-work at training. The Jets scored a total of 12 tries with Shana Naden and Beth Clarke scoring a hat-trick each, and Emily Edwards also scoring a double. Taylor Mclean, Abbie Mitchell, Lily Spackman, Lucy Dawson, and Jacana Powell, also, all crossed the whitewash with one try each. The team played as one unit all game, with some great defence leading to only only one try being scored against them. “Players’ Player” votes went to their hard-working centre, Abbie Mitchell. First Grade were also fi red-up to put on a good show for Sponsors Day, and were confident of handing Gulgong their fi rst loss of the year. The game started in fu-

rious frenzy, and continued that way for the fi rst 20 minutes with neither side giving an inch. Momentum swayed back and forth throughout the game, and the lead changed hands several times, but the Jets were ultimately unable to capitalise on some good field position, and also failed to complete their sets with the ball-in-hand, after scoring tries. In the end, the lack of match-fitness cruelled the Jets’ chances of winning, which was also compounded with a couple of injuries to key players on the day. The fi nal score was 4030, however, the scoreline didn’t reflect on the commitment and effort that the men showed, especially with Gulgong scoring on the full time siren. “Players’ Player” points went to their young, fullback Darby Gordon, who played in only his second First Grade game and showed that he is going to be a great player for many years to come. He was ably-supported by Alex Sambrook and Luke Thompson, who was at his rampaging best after returning from injury. After the match, there was also a huge turnout at the major sponsor of the Jets, the Narromine USMC, to participate in the auction of the specially-made jerseys that the Ladies league Tag and and First Grade teams wore, with all money raised going to Narromine Cancer Support Group, Narromine VRA (Volunteer Rescue Squad), and the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation. With some amazing bids on the night from Club supporters, the Jets were able to donate more than $5000 to each charity. The Jets thanked everyone who played a part in making this contribution to these charities possible. The Jets next travel to Coonamble on Saturday to tackle the Bears, in what should be tough games again in the League Tag and First Grade, and will be back at Cale Oval the following week to play Baradine in all three grades, with the League Tag playing in “Women In League” inspired guernseys, to celebrate the fantastic female participants in the Narromine Jets Club. For Club fans, make sure you come down and show your support, for this great promotion.

Will Stanley found a gap at the right time and the well-supported Miss Ash Star ($8 to $5) hit the front, and in new track record time, held off the fast fi nishing Lenroy (Ken Dunbar, $3.70) to score by a neck with Equilibrium (Paul Zerafa, $17) a handy third. James Hatch who brought Lenroy from his stables near the Queensland border north of Bourke to finish runner-up in the cup, had earlier won

Parked handy to the lead, In Peace (Ken Dunbar, $3.50) finished best to beat Better Than Pearls (Chelsea Ings, $3.50) and Dalante (Andrew Banks, $6). Making the most of the opportunity offered by Cobar trainer Wayne Prisk, 37-yearold apprentice Paul Zerafa from Kembla Grange rode a well-judged race when winning the 1700 metres Complete Asset Management Benchmark 50 Handicap on Berlotti, in new track record time. Trainer Graeme Brooker and Chelsea Ings who missed out in the cup with Plectrum, had won the opening race, the 1000 metres Walgett Hunt Camp Fish Newsagency Maiden Handicap with Smart ‘N’ Ritzy. Straight to the lead, Smart ‘N’ Ritzy ($2.30 to $3.50) accelerated at the top of the straight and breezed home by five lengths from Cinders (Paul Zerafa,$10) and Oh No Devon (Ken Dunbar, $3). Backed from $2.70 to $1.80 favourite, Super Son missed a place and a $2000 bet found a new home in a bookie’s bag. Before riding successfully in Queensland for more than two years, Wendy Peel rode a winner at Carinda and she was pleased to be back this year to win the Wayne ‘Bronco’ Lunn sponsored Benchmark 45 Handicap on Twy-

Well-ridden in the lead by Dubbo apprentice Jake Barrett, Sindagar ($3.80) was under siege in the straight but held off Royal Samer (Andrew Banks, $3 fav.) to score by threequarters of a length with Hussniacki (Ken Dunbar, $3.80) fi lling third place.

WITH football (soccer) one of the great success stories in women’s sport; two young local ladies, have just returned from a major tournament, as winners! They were members of the U10 girls Dubbo Devils; a group of 14 players from Dubbo, Gilgandra, and Narromine, that were selected in the 2023 Western Youth League team at the representative level. Two players from the Narromine Soccer Club were part of this hand-selected team — Lucy Walker and Matilda Dowell — who both play weekly in the U10s Narromine Rebels side. This is the fi rst season the Devils side have played together, and they recently ended the season with a week-long stay in Canberra, playing in the Kanga Cup tournament — the largest soccer tournament in the

southern hemisphere for girls aged 9–16 years. The girls were entered in the plate competition and faced a line-up of top teams from around the State. The team spent the week together and played outstanding soccer which led to them entering in the knock-out rounds positioning, equal second. With a fantastic semi-fi nal, where they picked themselves up from a 2-nil score at halftime, before fi nishing the semi-fi nal with a 3-2 win, then they entered the Grand Final against Lindfield — known as the “Young Matilda’s”. The girls had just missed-out on winning against the Matilda’s in an earlier match that week, with a score of 2-1. The Dubbo Devils however pulled together an outstanding final match

taking the win at 1-0, finishing as the Grand Final winners in the Kanga Cup tournament for their age group/plate. Coach Matt Stonestreet and player Regan Godber were also invited to speak in the opening ceremony presentations on the Sunday prior to competition commencing. “The stamina these girls showed and the commitment to the sport were second to none,” a spokesperson said. “The level of sportsmanship is to be commended for such a young group of athletes with each and every one, having a bright future ahead of them,” they added. “The friendships developed over the season and the fi nal week at Kanga Cup, will surely be lifelong,” the spokesperson concluded.
