Regional Australia Bank Gives Back By GINNI BROWN THE Regional Australia Bank Community Partnership Program Presentation Night was held in Trangie last week with local clubs and associations sharing in nearly $99,000 of donations. Regional Australia Bank (RAB) operates a unique program where customers who hold a transaction account can nominate a local group; and a percentage of the holdings are donated each year to that group. There are currently over 1700 groups registered and the bank has given over $2.75 million in total. Local groups are humbled by the amounts donated by the program. “We are absolutely thrilled with the donation,” Narromine Jets president Mick Burns told the Narromine Star. “We have priced up some new covers for our bus seats and this generous amount will cover those,” he said. Narromine Netball president Krista Morrisey agrees. “Local clubs spend a lot of time approaching local businesses for sponsorship and it takes a lot of volunteer work so, having a program like this where

Nathan Merchant (RAB), Brodie Powell (RAB), Sarah Walsh and Emily Walsh from Narromine Preschool, Lauren Janhsen and Jennifer Taylor from RAB. PHOTO: SUPPLIED. it’s part of the bank’s operations is just amazing,” she added. The netball club will use the funds to cover their umpiring costs for the second half of the season.

Nathan Merchant, regional operations manager for RAB said “it’s nice to be able to give reward and recognition to those who work hard in our towns and communities”.

“Regional Australia Bank is proud to give back to those who give so much and these funds will be used for projects that add benefit and value. RAB loves hearing the stories

By EMILY MIDDLETON THE Trangie Truck and Tractor Show is creeping up for its third year, and with better weather and lots of keen interest - it’s set to be record breaking. Locals and visitors alike are encouraged to bring in their trucks, tractors, cars, motorbikes, and even small engines to have on display. President of the show, Jason McCutcheon, insists they don’t have to be fancy or all done up to be worthy of display. “They can be in their ‘working clothes’, as we like to say,” he said. “Sometimes the original is even better than when it’s all done up.” But even if tractor displays aren’t your thing, there’s entertainment on offer for the whole family. sorts of prizes on offer. There will be market stalls, food, kids activities, and even live entertainment in the evening, after of course - the demolition derby. The Trangie Truck and Tractor Show was first thought up by a group of friends wanting to put their prized possessions on display. The first show in 2019 anticipated to have around 500 people in attendance, but it was blown out to over 3000 guests through the gates. “It was off the scale!” exclaimed Mr McCutcheon. “The second one was postponed from COVID-19, but then the night before it was meant to happen we had 100mm of rain, and it was washed out. So we had probably still over 1000 people come and we had tractors all through the main street. “When we initially started, we

got a few of our wives involved to do some of the admin, and they asked what they were going to do when they attended, so that’s where this idea of it becoming a whole day of activities came through.” Mr McCutcheon said that the idea was thought up in the middle of the drought, in an effort to put something on to pick up people’s spirits. “We planned a full family day with enough activities for everyone, the chance to show off equipment if you want, or just something to have a look around.” The Trangie Truck and Tractor Show’s major sponsor is Inland Petroleum, and the event was given a boost this year by the NSW government through their Reconnecting Regional NSW – Community Events Program.

BRIAN’S BIBLE BITS

God can do anything, with Jesus alive, for all of us! “AN angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.” (Luke 2:9). If an angel suddenly appeared to you in a bright light, would you be terrified? These poor shepherds were. Some of those shepherds were just young boys, not even teenagers yet. They probably told that story for years! “Remember the time when those angels appeared out of nowhere…” Why do you think God sent angels to some lowly shepherd boys, instead of sending them to someone more important, like King Herod? Well, God knew that the king wouldn’t run around telling everyone the news. The king would be jealous, and would try and kill Jesus! God looks at our hearts; he knew those shepherds would obey the angel without question; they were happy to do what they were told. Jesus looked at the hearts of people when he chose disciples, and did miracles for others. He could see their hearts and who was open to God’s love. He doesn’t waste important messages on people with hard hearts or closed minds. Is your heart open to God? That’s when and where he will shine his brilliant light on your life. He may deliver an important message through you one day. Will you be ready? Remember, Jesus Christ is alive today! “As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. ‘Don’t be alarmed,’ he said, ‘you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him’.” (Mark 16:5-6). Just try to imagine it; your best friend just died. You go to visit their grave, and it’s empty. Not only is their body gone, but there is a guy sitting in their spot. The stranger calmly tells you that your best friend has risen from the dead, as if these things happen every day. Now can you see why the women who went to Jesus’ tomb ran away in fear? It would be hard to grasp that, not only was there someone inside the tomb alive, but also the person supposed to be in it, had gotten-up and walked out! “He’s alive!” Mary told Jesus’ followers; “He’s alive!” and alive, he was. We do not serve a dead saviour; our saviour is alive and well. He is able to conquer. Are you surprised? No need to be — God can do anything. Prayer: “Lord Jesus, we are so thankful that you live! We are so glad you rose again! Because you live, we can live with you forever. Hallelujah! and dear God, may our hearts always be open to you, so we are always ready to hear your message at any time. Please, Lord, use us to deliver your most important news one day. Amen.” By THE REVEREND BRIAN SCHMALKUCHE, ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF BATHURST

Political News & Opinion COULTON’S ULTON’S CATCH TCH UP Comment ment by K COULTON, MARK Federal ral Member for Parkes arkes

Concerns about proposed heritage laws I HAVE serious concerns about Labor’s proposed cultural heritage reforms and their potential impact on Australian property owners. The Labor government has refused to rule out heritage laws similar to the controversial Cultural Heritage Act in Western Australia which is now in question. Any similar laws would cause havoc in communities I represent, as this would require landowners to obtain expensive cultural surveys for basic activities conducted on their own properties. Most Australians want to do the right thing, but what was proposed in Western Australia is overreach, and would have a hugely negative impact should anything similar be introduced in the Parkes electorate.

Labor’s BANANA republic UNDER the current government we are, to echo Paul Keating, becoming a BANANA republic, meaning: ‘Builds Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone’.

Applications open for Infrastructure Grants APPLICATIONS are now open for the NSW Government’s Infrastructure Grants program. This initiative provides local organisations the opportunity to apply for funding of between $50,000 and $250,000, to cover the cost of construction, alteration, renovation, completion, and fit-out of build-

The previous government understood that infrastructure underpins the Australian economy and invested billions of dollars in highway upgrades and railway projects such as the Inland Rail. This government is a disgrace when it comes to infrastructure and needs to get Australia moving. They’re waiting for the results of the 90-Day Review, but they should get on with it and stop delaying projects so necessary to the lifeblood of communities across the Parkes electorate!

Amazing effort for Macquarie Home Stay WHAT a great example of community fundraising - the Duck Creek Picnic Races have raised $40,000 for Macquarie Home Stay and I couldn’t be prouder of the people in this electorate. So proud in fact, that I spoke up in parliament about this last week. People in the west know all too well the importance of the Macquarie Home Stay and the accommodation it provides for people undergoing medical treatments and their families. About 28 per cent of its visitors are Aboriginal people as well as many other people from the Far West. Where the Labor government cut funding options for this facility, the people of western NSW have stepped up to support this incredibly necessary facility so that it can now plan more rooms to meet demand. Amazing effort!

ings and community infrastructure that benefits regional communities. This is a great chance for local organisations to seek funding for a project to provide longterm tangible benefits to the community. Previous successful projects, include the refurbishment of Narromine Soccer Club’s amenities at Dundas Oval, as well as the construction of the outdoor community activity hub near Cale Oval. These projects are all about creating healthy and connected communities, promoting participation in sport, recreation and arts, and boosting social inclusion and disaster resilience. The current round of funding will prioritise projects

which deliver outcomes for disadvantaged NSW communities, including regional, remote and drought and disaster affected areas, culturally and linguistically diverse, disability, and Aboriginal communities.

Save Regional Seniors Travel Card! I AM urging everyone to sign the petition to help save the Regional Seniors Travel Card! After cutting-off new applications for the card in July, Labor announced on the weekend, a four cents per litre reduction in fuel for seniors at United service stations. This is a weak attempt to compensate eligible seniors, and is the most genuine sign so far, that Labor plans on cutting the Regional Seniors Travel Card in

September’s Budget. An eligible senior with a vehicle that has a 60-litre fuel tank, would save $2.40 each time they fi ll it from empty, and would need to do that 105 times a year, in order to save more than the $250 they do with our Regional Seniors Travel Card. That’s, basically, twice a week. Labor should keep the Regional Seniors Travel Card because it was a good program that made a meaningful difference to the lives of elderly residents in our regional communities.

Parli-Flicks short film comp closes tomorrow APPLICATIONS close tomorrow, Friday, August 11, for Parliament of NSW’s short fi lm competition — Parli-Flicks. Students are asked to sub-

mit a one-minute short film addressing this year’s theme: “Should the voting age be lowered?”. I encourage all students to be imaginative — your entry can be comical, fictional, or take more of a documentary style, with the judges looking for entries that stand out from the crowd. The winning entry will receive a cash prize of $250, and all fi nalists will be invited to an awards night at Parliament House later in the year. Financial assistance for travel and accommodation will be provided to regional fi nalists to attend the awards night. For information go to the NSW Parliamentary Education and Engagement website. NARROMINE STAR Local News for the Narromine, Trangie & Tomingley region Thursday, August 10, 2023

Narromine Shire Council Narromine achieves 97.3 per cent of hosting Reserve its goals for the 2022/23 Fours; in the financial year first weekend BOWLS COLUMN

of September By NORM BOHM GUB Thorne Day is now only a couple of weeks away, are you in? We already have some 20 teams nominated to date, so there are only a few spots left. Therefore, if you are thinking of “having a go”, it’s time to stop prevaricating, and make your way up to the Noticeboard, otherwise you may miss the boat! Cost for the day is only $30, and this includes both breakfast and lunch, plus three guaranteed games of bowls. The Narromine Bowling Club will also be hosting the Reserve Fours Championships as part of the Zone Four Championship roster. The event takes place over the weekend of Septem-ber 2–3. This is a great opportunity for members to jump-in and have a game, providing you are qualified to do so. This means that, if you have an open-gender Pennant Grade of 05 or below, or are ungrad-ed, you are eligible to take part in this format of the Zone Fours Championships. The nomi-nation sheet is on the Noticeboard, and players can nominate by fi lling-in the form and forwarding to Rick or James, the entry fee, which is $40 per team. The Zone Four Men’s Pennants commenced last Saturday, with an away fi xture against Parkes Railway. Once we were able to establish confi rmation of available players, the lads jaunted-off to Parkes and played some great bowls. The new-look squad performed admirably and came-away with wins on both rinks; Robbie winning 16-11, and Johno getting-home comfortably by 22-9. The planned Sunday fi xture against Nyngan at home, however, didn’t eventuate, due to the Club withdrawing from the competition but, this coming weekend, we have games on Sat-urday in Dubbo, and at home on Sunday. The selectors have met and the teams for this weekend are as follows: Team One for Saturday and Sunday, is Adam Jermyn, Kevin Rider, Robbie Stanford, and Henry Buttsworth. Team Two for Saturday, is Ray Anthony, Steve Buttsworth, Ben Clark, and John Edwards. On Sunday, Team Two personnel will change slightly, with Steve Buttsworth, James Daley, Ben Clark, and John Edwards, all doing battle. Both of these matches start from 11am with players asked to be in the car-park by around 10am, Saturday to make the travel arrangements to Macquarie Club in Dubbo. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the lads only have to be in the Clubhouse before about 10.30am. Social Bowls this week also witnessed some handy fields for both the Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning events. It was great to see Terry McDonald back in town for a few weeks, and he certainly let it be known that he was back, with a telling performance alongside team-mates Mark Smith and Richard Hyde, to collect the day’s trophy for best-performed rink with the runners-up, Duane Faro and Bob Christoff. Sunday’s “chook run” was bolstered by a few Trangie lads and Pennant players joining the fray with, all-in-all, 24 players going around. Winners of the day were Carl Moore, Bruce Powyer, and Danny Carnevale, with the trio of Graham Hillier, Des Lincoln, and “Cuz” getting the runners-up cheque. Well that’s all for another week; hope to catch you up at the Bowly!

By ANDREW TARRY THE Narromine Shire Council has released a report stating that for the 2022/23 fi nancial year the council achieved 97.3 per cent of its goals. The progress report presents the progress on the council’s achievements in implementing key priorities in the Delivery Program and Community Strategic Plan. The key priorities are the ‘Vibrant Communities, Growing Our Local Economy, Protecting and Enhancing our Environment, and Proactive Leaders’. A summary of the performances if these priorities are: Proactive Leadership: 100 per cent. Protecting and Enhancing Our Environment: 99 per cent. Growing our Economy: 96 per cent. Vibrant Communities: 95 per cent. As part of the report, the council have also supplied a list of notable achievements for the 2022/23 fi nancial year. f Cale Oval clubhouse and grandstand construction. f Construction of two new hangars at

the Narromine Aviation Business Park. f Return and Earn Facility. f Draft Precinct Plan for Dundas Oval and Payten Park. f Refurbishment of Trangie Main Street public facilities. f Tomingley Treatment Plant. f Narromine Rotary Park Boat Ramp. f Narromine Rotary Park pub lic facilities. Several projects are still underway with levee concept design and feasibility study, Wentworth Park subdivision, and Narromine wetlands extension, all continuing through their progress stages. For each priority area to achieve a 100 per cent progress achievement, all of the actions in that area have to have a 100 per cent completion result. The Proactive Leadership section was the only section to manage this. In the Vibrant Communities portion, three of the 33 actions began during the last fi nancial year are still progressing. They are at various stages in that progression. The “upgrade recreational services booking system and streamline al-

location process for all recreational facilities”, is at 30 per cent. The “upgrade club house at Narromine pool”, is at 50 per cent. While the “give public recognition of volunteer service”, is also at 50 per cent. The Growing Our Economy only had one out of 11 actions which did not reach completion within the previous fi nancial year. That is the “carry out water and sewerage strategic planning”. As it stands, the progress is currently on 60 per cent. Of the actions started for the Protecting and Enhancing our Environment priority, only one from 33 actions undertaken has not yet been completed. That action is at 80 per cent and refers to the promotion of community education “campaigns through Net Waste and FOGO presenting the benefits of recycling and educating the community regarding which items can be recycled”. The high result signals an achievement for the Narromine Shire Council and no doubt it will look to continue and/or improve for the current 2023/24 fi nancial year.

Junior Jets celebrating Home round this another ripper season week, for our

junior soccer stars!

By GINNI BROWN THE Junior Jets Under Eights, coached by Kerrod Anderson, have had a ripper of a season of rugby league. They last headed to Nyngan on the weekend, and had a barn-storming run against the Tigers.

Young star, Trader Paine — who scored three tries in the match — explained what he loves most about football: “running and getting a try, and playing with my friends”. The Junior Jets 2023 Presentation will be held early next month, and the Club can’t wait to celebrate another enormous season of junior local league.

Loving their football; Narromine Bandits, with Coach, Jack McCutcheon.

LADIES GOLF

First round of Foursomes Championships, with Ladies Vicki and Betty, early leaders By DALE HARDING LAST Wednesday, Ladies Golf played the fi rst round of the Foursomes Championships, with a total of 18 teams taking part. At the end of play, the A-Grade Scratch and Handicap winners for the round were Vicki Gainsford and Betty Berryman with 84 off-the-stick, and a score of 73 nett. In B-Grade, Kim Handsaker and Anne Harmer are in the lead with scores of 100 scratch and 73.5 handicap. In other results, drawn cards were won by Wendy Jeffery and Michelle Ashdown, and Jenny Fitzgerald and Jenni Ward. On Saturday the Ladies also played the fi fth round of the Monthly Medal with

Vicki Gainsford carding an almost perfect round of 66 nett on a 10 handicap; well played! Vicky Tuck won a ball with a score of 71 nett; and Jeanette O’Brien won the NineHole Medal, scoring 33 nett. Nearest-the-pins winners were Vicki Gainsford, who won two, and Jeanette O’Brien, one. Earlier this week, the Ladies then competed in the second round of the Foursomes Championships, with results to be posted next week. Our Ladies Open Tournament will also be held on Wednesday, August 23, so players and some help with the catering, would be appreciated!

Playing so well with sportsmanship on the field, second-to-none, the Narromine Under Six Bandits in action last weekend.

By GINNI BROWN ALL junior soccer games last weekend were held in Dubbo in perfect, late winter weather. The teams all played so well; with the sportsmanship on the field, second-to-none, with congratulations to the players, coaches, and parents. This weekend, all junior games will be in Narromine for

the second-last home round of the season. In other news, remember that the Club’s Presentation Day will be held at Dundas Oval on Saturday, September 9 from 11am, with all welcome to attend. The sponsor “shout-out” this week, goes to BVR Engineering and Mirror Hair Lounge; thanking both for their support of the Club.

RACING NG REPORT ORT By COLIN HODGES SUPERBLY ridden by Clayton Gallagher, Just A Brother gave trainer Terry Croft a deserved win on Sunday, August 6, in the 1600 metres Bankstown Sports Club Forbes Cup, an eligibility race for the $3 million Big Dance at Royal Randwick in November. Not only did Terry Croft win the cup with outsider Just A Brother but he also finished third with another outsider Royalzel. After having a close association with racing stables at Canowindra, Terry Croft has been a long-time trainer at Hawkesbury. For many years he has brought horses, friends, and clients to Forbes for the cup meeting. Racing on a very well-prepared track before an excellent crowd, Notabadidea led from Invincible Dash and Dr Evil in the run to the home turn with Just A Brother travelling beyond midfield on the rails. Clayton Gallagher, who served much of his apprenticeship with Rodney Robb at Nyngan and is now a leading jockey based at Dubbo, found openings at the right time for Just A Brother ($26) to burst through the pack and win the cup by a length from Ruben Bleu (Nick Heywood, $9) with Royalzel (Ken Dunbar, $26) a half-length away third while Notabadidea battled on well for fourth. Backed from $2.25 to $1.85 favourite, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Randwick-trained Kangaroo Court (Jean Van Overmeire) had every chance but did not threaten in the straight. Goulburn trainer Matthew Dale, who finished runner-up in the cup with Ruben Bleu, had earlier won the 1200 metres The Amazing Ben Hall Bullet Open Handicap with Blitzar. Patiently ridden at the tail of the field by Irish born Louise Day, Blitzar ($4.60) rushed down the outside to beat Kattegat (Billy Owen, $4) and

Just A Brother wins Forbes Cup to qualify for the Big Dance Boom Boom Basil (Clayton Gallagher, $2.70 favourite). Natalie Jarvis, a successful trainer at Moruya, regularly brings a good size team to Forbes and it was a popular win when Our Kinsman won the opening event, the 1600 metres Seeley/Polyaire Showcase Maiden Plate. Overcoming the outside barrier, Our Kinsmen (Shaun Guymer, $3.50) raced beside the leader Rain Don then shot away turning for home and safely held off Pretty Eyed (Nick Heywood, $2.80 fav.) and Camp Cove (Wendy Peel, $26). Sponsored by the Walker Family from Forbes, the 1100 metres Country Boosted Maiden Plate the win was taken by the Danny Williams, Goulburn-trained Masters in an exciting fi nish. Finite (Mathew Cahill, $10) reached the lead close to home before Masters (Nick Heywood, $3.10 to $2.35) squeezed through a gap to score by a half-length with another halflength to third placed Hot Extraction (Robyn Freeman, $9). Formerly from Forbes and now a successful trainer at Orange, Alison Smith won the 1300 metres Shead and Nicholson/Daikin Showcase Maiden Handicap with Eilrahc (Beany Panya, $41) which produced a powerful run from well back to account for Pozesana (Robyn Freeman, $6) and Felix Pereon (Mathew Cahill, $8). Another to fi nish fast from the back of the field was the Peter Morgan, Wagga Wagga trained Sheer Elegance (Mathew Cahill, $6) when beating Cartography (Robyn Freeman, $16) and Electric Storm (Michael Heagney, $6.50) in the 1400 metres City Club Group Benchmark 58 and Handicap. From the Clint Lundholm stable at Dubbo, Invahir (Wendy Peel, $5.50) made it successive wins when leading throughout to defeat I’m A Shaker (Mathew Cahill, $3.40 fav.) and A Boy Named Soo (Clayton Gallagher, $5) in the 1400 metres International Gaming Technologies Class One Handicap. Backing up from a runaway win at Warren, the David Smith, Mudgee trained I Like Big Putts (Clayton Gallagher, $4 fav.) had a handy posi-

tion before winning the 1100 metres Roylance Tractor Replacements/Aristocrat Showcase Class Two Handicap from Manzoni (Shaun Guymer, $4.20) and Pretty Extreme (Kayla Nisbet, $26).

Jockeys’ premiership champ continues good form at Wellington HAVING clinched the Australian Jockeys Premiership, the previous day at Muswellbrook, Aaron Bullock kept up the momentum when riding a winning treble on Monday, July 31 at Wellington. Bullock, who was reared at Tumut and Singleton and is now based at Newcastle, won the Australian title ahead of Queensland jockey James Orman and William Pike from Western Australia. His winners at Wellington were trained by Todd Howlett (Magic Prophet), Dean Mirfi n (Island Press), and Tracey Bartley (Kissing Supido). The win by Magic Prophet was satisfying for Bullock as his fi rst apprenticeship was with trainer Todd Howlett. Magic Prophet ($1.95 to $1.55) led all the way to beat Sunset Panorama (Jake Pracey-Holmes, $26) and Sensei Jacki (Ronald Simpson, $21) in the 1400 metres Satts Plant Hire and Haulage Maiden Handicap. In the 1400 metres Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club Mountain and Rivers Handicap, Island Press ($2.40 to $1.90 favourite) led and lasted to win by a head from Notabadidea (Ronald Simpson, $5) with Wild Rocket (Mathew Cahill, $31) a close third. Completing the Aaron Bullock treble, the Tracey Bartley, Wyong trained Kissing Supido ($4.20) came from off the pace for a convincing win over Everyone’s A Star (Julia Presits, $2.80 fav.) and Inequality (Ashley Morgan, $3) in the 1100 metres Federal Hotel Class One Handicap. A good front running ride by Tony Cavallo helped the Michael Mulholland trained Epic Poem ($2.90 fav.) to a one length win over Soul Night (Jake Barrett, $61) and First Secret (Seg Lisnyy, $5) in the 1700 metres Federal Hotel Brasserie Class One and Maid-

en Plate. Not long back from serious injury, Mathew Cahill was at his best when bringing the Danielle Seib, Goulburn trained Leather Jacket Lew $5.50) from midfield to win the 2400 metres LSS Security Benchmark 66 Handicap from Ironpot (Matthew Palmer, $51) and Foxtrot Bravo (Tony Cavallo, $8.50). A last start third in Sydney, the Bjorn Baker, Warwick Farm trained Stefi Magnetica (Ashley Morgan, $1.50 to $1.22 favourite) had a cosy run close to the lead and was untroubled when winning the KFC Wellington Maiden Plate from Hammoon Summer (Jake Barrett, $18) and Magic Stella (Jake Pracey-Holmes, $17).

Sparks first across in 2023 Collie HotelCollie Cup WELL known for their starring roles on the rugby league field, Kieren Hazelton and Terry Fahey as racehorse trainers each had a winner on Saturday, August 5, before a big crowd at Gilgandra’s annual Collie Hotel-Collie Cup meeting. Local trainer Kieren Hazelton, a multiple award winner with the Gilgandra Panthers team, won with Mamelon while the winner for the former NRL and international star and now Dubbo-based Terry Fahey was Costas. Settling well back in the 1100 metres Western Farm Machinery/Happy 50th Birthday John Alchin Benchmark 50 Handicap, Mamelon (Andrew Banks, $6.50) rushed down the outside win by a short head from Nicator (Jake Pracey-Holmes, $3.30 favourite) with Rupicasso (James Rogers, $20) also trained by Kieren Hazelton, a handy third. Representing Terry Fahey

in the 1600 metres Brophy Memorial and Inland Petroleum Benchmark 50 Handicap, Costas ($14) came from off the pace to beat Pop Power (Will Stanley, $9.50) and All Business (Billy Cray, $7) in a close finish. A good quality field contested the feature event the 1280 metres Collie Hotel-Collie Cup with victory going to the Jane Clement, Bendemeer-trained Sparks. Ridden by Jake Pracey-Holmes, Sparks ($4.40) ran down the leader Daredevil (Jake Barrett, $7) to score by 3/4 length with Turgenev (Andrew Banks, $5.50 to $4.60) coming from near last for third. First leg of a treble for Jake Pracey-Holmes, was the Brett Thompson, Gulgong-trained Hampton Cove ($4.40) which led all the way to beat Tiger King (Jake Barrett, $21) and Bemote (Clayton Gallagher, $1.90 to $1.50 fav.) in the 110 0 metres Gilgandra Toyota and Gilmour Engineering BM 50 Handicap. First up since joining the Cec Hodgson stable at Coonamble, The Big Seal (Jake Pracey-Holmes, $3.30 to $2.80 fav.) led throughout to win the 800 metres Keith Kilby Memorial and Cooee Tyres BN 50 Handicap from Casan Geal (Will Stanley, $4.80) and the winner’s stablemate Twyborn Affair (Wendy Peel, $5.50). According to experienced jockey Michael Heagney, the Greg O’Neill, Nyngan-trained Outback Cod was always travelling well in the 1600 metres Johnson’s Family Store and Jason Tate Electrical BM 50 Handicap. After racing outside the leader Enthralled, Outback Cod ($17) took control to win by a length from Bobby’s Secret (Will Stanley, $6) and Enthralled (Camille Houlgatte, $8.50). Other winners were the Cody Morgan, Tamworth trained Cool Ruler (Anna Roper, $1.70 fav.) in the 1000 metres Aqua West Maiden Plate and the Roy McCabe, Bathurst trained Overclassy (Ashleigh Stanley, $6 to $9) in the 1200 metres B and C Coxsedge Memorial and Chandlers Gilgandra Maiden Handicap.

VETERANS GOLF NOTES

Dwyer wins the Veterans Open; on a beautiful day, great course By NORM LEWIS ONE of our premier events of the year, the Narromine Veterans Open Golf Tournament, was played last Thursday as an 18-hole Stableford competition. In a very close fi nal result, the overall winner was Gilgandra’s Bob Dwyer with a score of 38 points; winning on a countback from Narromine’s Ashley Bullock, also on 38 points. This annual event on the Narromine course attracted a field of 39 players(35 men; four women). Although the number of players was a little disap-

pointing and is down on previous years, the players in fact represented 12 clubs from throughout the Western area; including Trangie, Nyngan, Cobar, Tottenham, Gilgandra, Gulgong, Coonabarabran, Tooraweenah, Wellington, Trundle, and Coonamble, along with the Narromine locals. Speaking at the Presentation Ceremony after the end of play, Narromine Club President, Peter Hutchinson, thanked all players for turning-up for the event which was held in pleasant conditions on a course which was also in top condition. Prior to the Presenta-

tion, President of the WDVGA (Western Districts Veteran Golf Association), Mal Mallison, congratulated Narromine on the success of the tournament, and suggested that players support the remaining tournaments in the WDVGA area. Peter Hutcinson added thanks for those who made the event such a success, including: the Narromine Ladies who did a wonderful job accepting entries,recording scores and calculating results, and catering for the luncheon; the “two Bruces”, for cooking the barbecue; the volunteers who had the course in excellent condition;

and Tab behind the bar. He also thanked Kyle, the local butcher who provided the meat for meals and the competitions; and his Match Committee and Greg Kearines, who were responsible for the organisation of the day. Final results and trophy winners were: f Overall winner: Bob Dwyer (Gil) on 38 (on a count-back); second place, Ash Bullock, also on 38; f Division One Winner: “China” Brien (Cobar) on 37; second place, Alan Mann (Narromine) on 36; f Division Two Winner: Bill Berryman (Trangie) on 36 (on a count-back); second place,

Lady Jets fire-up with two big wins, as semi-finals race looms for men

Narromine Jets Ladies League Tag team are on fire; bagging two big wins over the weekend.

Narromine Jets First Grade went down in a tight game against the Cobar Roosters.

A “Rogues Gallery” of former champions; with a great turn-out for Old Boys Round for the Narromine Jets. PHOTOS: CONTRIBUTED.

Jets Reserve Grade side, travelling to Coonabarabran on Saturday for a must-win match.

By MICK BURNS LAST weekend featured a big couple of days of footy for the Narromine Jets; with the Ladies League Tag starting proceedings on Friday night at Gilgandra with a catch-up game against the Panthers. The Ladies ran red-hot on a cold night, and came-away easy winners in a game calledoff early with the “mercy rule” applied after the Jets scored 60 points as the Panthers were held scoreless. Try scorers in this game were Beth Clarke (two), Lily Spackman (two), Emily Edwards (two), Jacarna Powell (two), with Shayana Naden and Shian Chatfield also scoring with the “Players’ Player”, being Lucy Dawson. Saturday at Cale Oval, the Jets hosted the Dunedoo Swans in Reserve Grade and

the Cobar Roosters in Ladies League Tag (LLT) and First Grade. The “Reggies” started the day up against the Swans, and came away with a much-needed win. After training well throughout the week as a team, the boys decided to play simple footy and complete their sets of six, which they did throughout the game. This approach resulted in a fi nal score of 30-10, with big games played by Zahn Chisolm, Daniel Towns, Jack Powell, and Players’ Player, Cooper Anning. Reggies now travel to Coonabarabran this weekend to tackle the Unicorns in a game that needs to go the Jets way, if they are to make the semi-fi nals. The LLT started their game against the Roosters slowly due to being a little tired from the game against Gilgandra

the night before. Once the girls got into a bit of a rhythm and started to hold the ball for sets of six though, they became dominant in their field positioning and started to pile on the points, with the final score 34-12 in their favour. The Jets know that they are a better team than the performance showed, but were happy to take the win. Try-scorers were Lily Spackman, Shian Chatfield, Shayana Naden, Emily Edwards, with Beth Clarke bagging a double. The Players’ Player was Millah Phillips, who has had a great season so far. The girls are continuing to impress each week, and are a great team to watch. First Grade also started their game in a leisurely manner, with a try by the Roosters early-on. However, a quick chat behind the tryline result-

ed in the team getting back into the grind of the match. It then started to look as though things were falling into place, with both possession and the defence, improving. Tries were scored by Willis Olney, Washie Itoya, Tylah Beer, and Luke Thompson, who has had a huge season and has been playing the full 80-minutes each game. Unfortunately, the game slipped out of the Jets hands as injuries started to mountup and fatigue got the better of the team and Cobar got a rollon in attack. Players’ Player was Jets young fullback, Darby Gordon, who again showed why he is a star of the future with many people in the crowd singing his praises. In front of a large crowd with many ex-players showing up for the “Old Boys” round,

including the 2003 Reserve Grade and a few Under 18 Premiership-winning players, the Jets lost a close one, 24-20. The Jets have a great team capable of beating anyone on the day and will hopefully knuckle-down at training for the next two weeks, to ensure that they give the Finals series a positive crack. The Jets have the bye this week, and then the semi-finals will start the week after, with Narromine hosting a game next week; more details will follow as they are released. In other games, Reserve Grade travel to Coonabarabran on Saturday for a must-win match. Thanks go to all the supporters for making the effort on Saturday and throughout the season so far to cheer “the mighty Jets” on.

NARROMINE STAR Local News for the Narromine, Trangie & Tomingley region Thursday, August 10, 2023 CHRISTIE AND HOOD CASTLEREAGH LEAGUE, ROUND 13

Final five is still unresolved: as final round this weekend By BRYSON LUFF COMPOSITION and the pecking order of the top five is still unresolved, with just the final round of the 2023 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League competition to be played this weekend. The Gulgong Terriers though have the Minor Premiership well and truly stitched-up, after they downed the Baradine Magpies 26-12 at Baradine, now sitting seven points clear of the Dunedoo Swans, who currently hold-down second spot on the ladder. Perched just one-point adrift of the Swans though, is Cobar and, if they can become the fi rst team this season, to take the “yap” out of the Terriers in their Boronia Cup Round 14 clash, they could bag second-place. This, however, would also require the Swans to lose to a desperate Gilgandra Panthers outfit with the Roosters then fi nishing in second place. It is, though, no easy task being set for the Chooks, as they have to endure another long road trip to Gulgong and then overcome the Terriers on their home patch. The Roosters forced their way into the top three, with a hard-fought 24-20 victory over the Narromine Jets at Narromine on the weekend. Despite that loss, the Jets will fi nish fourth on the competition ladder, due to their having the bye this weekend.

But, who they will be playing in the elimination semi-fi nal on Sunday, August 20, is not yet clear, with both Coonabarabran and Gilgandra still in the race for the fi nal top five berth. Playing at Coonabarabran last weekend, the Unicorns proved to be too-strong for the Gilgandra visitors, converting a 10-6 half-time lead into a rather impressive 44-18 runaway win. That score-line not only draw them level with the Panthers in terms of competition points, but also gave them an advantage in points differential over Gilgandra. This means that their semi-fi nal destiny, is very much in their own hands and comes down to their fi nal competition game this Saturday, when they will be at home to the Binnaway Bombshells. For the Panthers to claw their way into the top five, they fi rst need to claim victory over the Swans at Gilgandra while, at the same time, hoping that either the Unicorns lose to Binnaway, or that their (Gilgandra) victory is of sufficient magnitude to haulin the points differential between themselves and Coonabarabran, should the Unicorns win in a close match. The Bombshells will be out to make things difficult for their near neighbours in their fi nal outing for the 2023 season, after very nearly downing the Coonamble Bears at Coonamble, just being edged-out by

28-26. The Bears and Baradine will complete their fi rst-grade commitments for the year when they clash at Baradine in what could well be a very entertaining match.

Course in great condition, as Masling is the weekly winner By NORM LEWIS

LAST weekend was very quiet for local golfers, with two competitions played with disappointing attendances. This may have been due to other local events, particularly some footy fi nal rounds which meant that, on Saturday, only eight players participated in the Individual Stableford competition. Peter Gainsford was the ultimate winner with 40 points from Dave Powell on 39; Nearest-the-Pins went to Dave Powell on the ninth and Greg Barling on the 17th; with Tony Harding picked up the Long Drive event and the drawn Jackpot prize went to Greg Barling. Sunday was a nice day and an improved field with 13 players taking part in the 18Hole 4BBB event. The winners were Kale Bock and Henry Buttsworth with a score of 41 points who defeated Matt Brown and Steve Squires on a count-back, also on 41 points. There were no winners of the Nearestthe-Pins on the day, but Craig Duff took-out the Long Drive on the fourth. Greg Barling had a field day collecting the drawn Jackpot event on the 18th,making it

Cobar 24 (Gerald Mackay 2, Ashley Davies, Beigh Hillier tries, Thomas Plater 4 goals) defeated Narromine 20 (Will Olney, Washie Itoya, Luke Thompson, Tyler Beer tries, Doug Potter 2 goals). Played at Narromine.

a double for Greg — Saturday and Sunday. Some people have all the luck! Next weekend, golfers have two top events to play for. On Saturday, is the Macquarie Clothing Monthly Medal over 18-holes of Strokeplay. Also, in conjunction with this event, there will be a Nine-Hole Strokeplay event for the Veterans on the front nine. On Sunday, the very popular Club House Cup will be played over 18-holes of Stableford. Entry fee to play will be $25, which will include a barbecue lunch. This will be a team event with the “Young Guns” (under 50!) to challenge the “Old Boys” (those into their second half-century). The top 10 aggregate scores for each team, will then decide the winners of the Club House Cup. This should be an interesting match with the cocky young ones who hit the ball a mile, against their older, cannier, more-savvy opponents — “Go the Oldies”! The Junior Clinic will be held as usual at 9am on Sunday and, it might be a good idea for the juniors, to watch the oldies, and see how it’s done. Well, that’s about it for this week — see you at the 19th!

ALTHOUGH only a small field took part in the weekly Gerries golf competition last Wednesday, the course was still in great condition in readiness for the Veterans Open starting last Thursday, with the weather pleasant for golf. Despite this, only seven players took-part in the event with the scores down a little, no doubt, the players hoping for shots back on their handicap! Winner on the day was Brian Masling with 20 points although, it is rumoured, that “Maso” was seen at the “Bowlo” partaking of some Chinese food before the game. This may have helped him to his victory, with runner-up on the day, Chris Harding on 19 points. There was, however, no winner of the Nearest-thePin trophy, and Bob Fletcher claimed the NAGA prize with

14 points. After the presentations, some hot food in the form of sausage rolls and pies were served and very much enjoyed — thanks Terry! The only Pool Match on the day was between Bob Fletcher and Chris Harding versus Norm Lewis and Terry Willis. Bob and Chris led all the way to the black with Bob producing a fi ne cut on the black to the centre pocket, and all thought it was over with a win for Bob and Chris. The white ball, however, continued around the table to one of the corner pockets, and down it went, giving victory to Terry and Norm and the title of Champs for the Week! Some people have all the luck… On Wednesday, the competition was played on the back-nine with the results to appear in next week’s edition of “The Star”. That’s all for another week — see you at the 19th!

Bush projects to face cancellation if “Country” fund is canned, Saunders

MAJOR projects in the bush — such as the $126,633 allocated to upgrade and improve accessibility at Dundas Park in Narromine — could face cancellation, if a dedicated rural funding initiative is abolished, the National Party claims. Vital community projects in every local government area across regional NSW are under threat, State Member for Dubbo and National’s Leader, Dugald Saunders, believes, saying that the Government is refusing to rule-out scrapping the Stronger Country Commu-

Vital community projects such as $1 million for upgrading the synthetic track at Barden Park, $280,000 for improvements at Mudgee Netball Courts, and $126,633 to upgrade and improve accessibility at Dundas Park in Narromine are under threat, State Member for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders, believes, with the Government refusing to rule-out scrapping the Stronger Country Communities Fund (SCCF). Mr Saunders has urged the Government to recommit to rolling-out the $90 million in funding that had been set aside by the previous Coalition Government for the next round of the program. This follows the Government failing to announce a new application round for the grants, which would normally have been called by early August. “Every day we’re reminded of the success of this program, and how it has made a really meaningful difference to the

lives of people living in communities all across the Dubbo electorate,” Mr Saunders said. “In the most recent round alone, this fund contributed over $1 million for Dubbo Regional Council to upgrade the synthetic track at Barden Park, $280,000 towards improvements at Mudgee Netball Courts, and $126,633 to upgrade and improve accessibility at Dundas Park in Narromine,” he added. He argued, that the Labor Government had shown a clear city-centric bias since

the March State election when it came to funding facilities in rural-versus-metropolitan areas. “This program was established by the former Coalition Government in 2017 and, since then, has seen $660 million invested into more than 2500 projects across the bush,” Mr Saunders said. “It’s been vitally-important, for regional communities.” Mr Saunders said the Stronger Country Communities Fund provides the infrastructure required to ensure

regional communities thrive, and its removal would have lingering effects across regional NSW. “We know in some cases there are projects that simply wouldn’t exist, if it wasn’t for the funding the former Coalition government invested into this program. “If Labor walks-away from the Stronger Country Communities Fund, it’s letting-down every regional Community in NSW,” he concluded.
