Women of the Warren shire: Barbara McKay By WARREN SHIRE COUNCIL PASSIONATE about healthcare and helping people, Barbara McKay has been advocating for quality rural healthcare since she moved to Warren 65-years-ago. Originally a pathology technician from Sydney, Mrs McKay has represented country communities for the Red Cross, as well as being on the Patient Safety Committee and the advisory board at the Warren Multi-Purpose Health Service (MPHS). She is also a long-serving local volunteer. As a dedicated advocate and valuable member of our community, we celebrate Barbara’s contributions as this month’s ‘Woman of Warren Shire’.

Quickfire questions... A usual morning looks like... “The fi rst thing I do in the morning when I get up is go for a walk. I feel if I don’t use it, I will lose it!” I’m most proud of... “Probably my family. And I’m very proud of Warren because it’s got a lot to offer.” On the weekend you can find me... “I like to go over to the WOW Centre for coffee on a Saturday morning, and then I’m usually at home during the day. We often have friends come over for a meal on Saturday nights.” A quote or piece of advice you live by... “If something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly.” How long have you lived in Warren shire? “Sixty-five years.” Favourite place in the shire? “At the moment, I think the WOW Centre and the museum would be my picks. “I love the beautiful garden out at WOW with all the native plants in it – it’s beautifully kept, and I think those panels in the garden are great for people to learn from. “I’ve also been on the

PHOTO: SUPPLIED. committee responsible for the new Warren Museum and Art Gallery and I’m very happy to support something as good as that.” What do you love most about living in the Warren shire? “I think the friendly attitude of the people in it – it’s a lovely community and everyone’s very supportive of each other. In a bigger town, you probably don’t know your neighbour.” Can you tell us a bit about your journey, including some of your most significant achievements? “I lived in Sydney before I came here, where I worked as a Pathology Technician. Back in those days the roads weren’t very good and the cars weren’t like they are now, so it wasn’t feasible to travel to Dubbo for work in a similar role. “When I moved to Warren, I joined the Red Cross so I could get to know people. I worked with the local branch, where I was the secretary and the president from time to time.

Central West Slopes and Plains area: Partly cloudy. Slight chance of a shower on the northern slopes, near zero chance elsewhere. Winds south to southeasterly 15 to 25 km/h. Overnight temperatures falling to between 7 and 12 with daytime temperatures reaching 22 to 27. Sun protection recommended from 9:30 am to 2:40 pm, UV Index predicted to reach 6 [High] Friday 21 April Partly Cloudy. Min 12°C. Max25°C. Possible rainfall: 0mm. Only once was I the treasurer but that was not my scene at all! “Then I became a zone representative for zone 24, which spanned from Trangie out to Bourke and all the little towns in between. My job was to visit those areas and keep them updated with what Red Cross was doing. After that, I got onto the Red Cross Advisory Committee as a country representative. I travelled once a month to Sydney for this and it was very productive. “I also had five children to be reared and became involved with the schools. At the Sydney schools, I was again a country representative, and then at St Mary’s, I was president and secretary. We used to swap around – I never did more than three years or so at a time because I used to get stale. Following your work with Red Cross, you’re now involved in the local hospital. What role do you have there and what do you enjoy most about giving

back to the community in this way? “I’m on the Warren MPHS Advisory Board and I’m also on the Patient Safety Committee as a community member. I enjoy working at the hospital because I’ve always been interested in the medical field, and I think that it’s important. Dubbo’s not next door, so we need to have quality healthcare services and facilities here for people when they need them.” You’re also known for your previous volunteer work at the Visitor Information Centre. What did this encompass and why do you think it’s important to support local tourism? “We actually offered to do it for the council when we had a craft shop at the old post office because people used to come in asking questions like “Where’s the toilet?” and “How far are the marshes?”. We said to the council that if they gave us the information we could just hand it out, and that’s more or less how it started. You meet very interesting people in these types of roles. It’s important to support our local visitor information services because if you want things to work, you’ve got to put something in to get something out.” As a former member of the local Country Women’s Association (CWA), do you think it’s important to have organisations like the CWA to support and advocate for women in rural areas? “I was a member for years and years, but I never took on any official position there because I was so involved in the Red Cross. I always said, “if you want some help, just tell me”. Usually, what we needed was food and with a bit of notice, I could easily rustle up a cake or some biscuits when needed. I think the CWA is a valuable voice for women in rural areas.” What advice would you give to other women living in country communities? “Life’s only going to be what you make it. You’ve got to make the best of what’s around you and have a go.”

New Museum and Gallery Opens

By HARRIET GILMORE “SEE me and you see Warren!” So said Adolph Alexander, fi rst owner of the heritage building at 142 Dubbo Street that’s now home to the new Warren Museum and Art Gallery. It’s a proclamation that fits well with the town’s newest community asset. The museum/art gallery was opened on March 4 by Senator Deborah O’Neill, in the company of Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton, Mayor Milton Quigley, the project’s management committee and over 100 members of the public. A federal government grant of over $3.5 million was secured to fund the project and Mr Coulton, who was a strong advocate for it, said he was pleased to see such a wonderful heritage building restored and ready to function as a cen-

tre for history and art in the town. He explained that the previous government’s Building Better Regions Fund was set up for the purpose of building up rural towns, increasing their strength for the future. “The use of these funds to create this beautiful museum and art gallery will boost the appeal of Warren, bringing in tourism and attracting more people to this area.” Over the years, many in Warren recognised the need for a place where heritage objects could be kept, preventing them from being lost to the area, and with them, many of the stories that make up the town’s history. The museum committee, chaired by Dr John Burke, has now met this need, engaging builders to restore the 123-year-old building as well as professional designers and

curators to create a modern space far removed from the look and feel of a typical small town museum. Central to the museum is the theme of the Macquarie River – Wambuul, as it has always been so significant to all life in this area. Acknowledging this, the museum is also known as ‘The WAM’ and design elements in the museum reflect the river including an installation that winds its way through the heart of the building alongside displays that tell of life in this area. “The committee is thrilled with how magnificent the space is and was very pleased to showcase a wonderful collection of local artists’ work for the inaugural art exhibition, which fi nished last week,” said Dr Burke. “The museum/gallery is very much a work in progress so our art exhibitions

will change regularly and volunteers will work to build our museum content as more objects and stories come forward.” Visitors are welcome at the museum between 10am and 4pm every day except Tuesday, and, as it is run as a not-forprofit entity and receives no funding from government or council for operations or staffing, it charges an entry fee and relies on volunteers to ensure the doors stay open. For locals who would like to support the museum’s operations they can pay an annual fee of $55, entitling them to unlimited visits over a year. Already the new cultural facility is a source of community pride and is enhancing the time visitors spend in Warren, as evidenced by feedback received from visitors over the Easter weekend. “The benefits to the town

are many,” Dr Burke said. “The museum is not just a facility for keeping objects from our history, it’s a place we can take people to share our story, a community space for coming together to enjoy exhibitions and events and, in terms of our town’s economy, another way we can encourage visitors to stay a little longer and spend money here.”

To stay in touch with all that’s happening at The WAM, follow on Facebook (Warren Museum and Art Gallery) and Instagram (theWam2824). From this week, visitors can enjoy a new art exhibition in the gallery, a collection of paintings and glass work from Gilgandra artists Joe and Judy Shaloub.

The next community event to be held in the space is the opening concert for the Warren Chamber Music Festival.

Warren Chamber Music Festival to return in 2023

By HARRIET GILMORE

THE Warren Chamber Music Festival will return next month, with the Goldner String Quartet to perform three unique concerts in different venues across Warren and Collie. “I am so excited about this year’s festival line up,” said organiser Frances Evans from Warren Chamber Music Festival. “The Goldner String Quartet has long-standing recognition as not only Australia’s pre-eminent string quartet, but as an ensemble of international significance, favourably compared with the best in the world.” Performing together since 1995, the Goldner String Quartet, features internationally recognised musicians Dene Olding, Dimity Hall, Irina Morozova and Julian Smiles. They’ll join some of Australia’s fi nest musicians during the festival including acclaimed violinist Peter Clark, renowned cellist Alexandra Partridge,

and Musica Viva Australia’s Future Makers 2023 Artist of the Year, violist Katie Yap. The festival will include performances of Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Dvorak, Weber, Vivaldi and much more. The fi rst performance of the weekend will be held at the newly opened Warren Art Gallery and Museum, followed by performances at Collie CWA Hall and a ‘Mother’s Day Matinee’ at the Warren Catholic Church. The Mother’s Day concert also includes the world premiere of a newly commissioned work composed for the festival, performed by the Goldner String Quartet, guest musicians and Warren’s very own local choir, SING Warren. Acclaimed Australian violinist Peter Clark will also be hosting intimate pre-concert Q&As at the gallery and the Collie Hotel performances, where audience members can connect with the history and significance of the music and learn about the artists before the show. FAITH MATTERS WHEN I was a child, I built my own Crystal Radio. It was very simple, no battery needed, and could only pick up one local country radio station from our farm in North East Victoria. That station carried a Bible teaching program at 9.30 every night and as it was my only option, I listened to solid Bible teaching for months. But that radio program started me on a pathway to life with God, as a follower of Jesus Christ, and I have relished the people and places that I have experienced as a result. We have just celebrated Easter – the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That resurrection life has captivated me from the earliest days I listened on my crystal radio, and it is available to everyone of us this Easter season: the question is, does Christ live in you? “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. (Romans 8:11 NIV2011) God bless you as you contemplate this. And experience it! Dr Kenn Iskov (Interim minister, Warren Presbyterian Church)

By HARRIET GILMORE AFTER three cancelled events due to COVID, bad weather and last year’s floods, the weather fi nally held out for the inaugural GROW Warren Day last Thursday, April 13. Centred around mental health awareness and social connections, the event run by the Warren NSW Youth Foundation in collaboration with the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS), saw more than 20 stalls and services on show for the community, as well as live music, dance performances, kids’

activities, free refreshments and a BMX show. “The idea behind the day was to allow our community to fi nd out what services are available in Warren, how to access those services and who you can rely on in times of need and hardship and bring it all together in one place,” said Kelly Sinclair from the Warren Youth Centre & Community Hub. Matt March from RFDS said GROW is a program that was developed by the team in Dubbo a few years ago and stands for Guiding Rural and Outback Well-being. “GROW is part of our pro-

active arm, where we collaborate with local communities and local community groups to facilitate days like today. It’s about creating awareness and access to what’s available to them and referral pathways, so that people have a clear idea of where to go when they need to reach out for support.” Mr March was one of a team of four from the RFDS at the event, manning a free barbecue, and said, “We’re here providing a free sausage sizzle and we just happen to be health professionals so we have the opportunity to chat and offer help where we can.

It’s a great day.” The event was opened with a Welcome to Country from Peter Mackay, followed by a performance from the Warraan Widji Arts dance group and choir, as well as a show from Dreaming Drifters First Nations rock band. Services on show and available to chat with the community included the local Police, Fire & Rescue who were offering free home smoke alarm checks and recruiting new members, Barnados Australia with goodie bags and kids’ face painting, TAFE NSW, Disability Advocacy, Catholic Care, NSW Health, and Ser-

vice Australia. Belinda Bell from Catholic Care was pleased to be at the event and said, “It’s a great opportunity to get together with people face to face and show them what Catholic Care does and how we can help.” Kelly Sinclair from the Warren Youth Centre & Community Hub agreed the day was very worthwhile. “We’ve had a fantastic turn out, and we are so grateful for all of the support and collaborators who helped put the event together. We can’t wait to do it again next year,” she told the Warren Star.

ANZAC biscuit recipe on its way IN coming weeks, residents of the Parkes electorate should receive a special card to commemorate ANZAC Day and the sacrifices our brave servicemen and women have made to keep us safe during confl icts. On the back of this card, you will also find an original recipe for ANZAC biscuits created by Bob Lawson, who was an original ANZAC present at the Gallipoli Landing in 1915. I encourage you to share this recipe with your family to reflect on the courage of our soldiers. Biscuits like those in the recipe, were sent in “care packages” to soldiers during World War I, and can be an effective reminder of the hardships faced by those on the frontline.

The publication of this new edition, was made possible through $6500 of funding from the Saluting Their Service (STS) Commemorative Grants Program, which the Dunedoo Historical Society and Museum were successful in applying for in 2021. The new volume includes additional material on Dunedoo’s involvement in the Vietnam War. The hard work of Anne Watts and the Dunedoo Historical Society and Museum, have translated hours of research and compiling of photographs, into a bound copy which is accessible to readers. They should be proud of their achievements, and the book launch, is a great example of what can be done through the Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program.

Queensland Local Egelabra overseer takes out Cotton Gin big prize at Sydney Shut Down Royal Easter Show

Empty yard at the Queensland Cotton Warren gin. PHOTO: WARREN STAR. By HARRIET GILMORE QUEENSLAND Cotton’s Warren gin will not be opening this coming season after reports to the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). A spokesperson from the NSW EPA said they have received reports alleging dust emissions from Queensland Cotton’s gin facility in Warren. “EPA investigations are ongoing, and we will keep the community updated once these have been fi nalised. There have been no prior penalty infringement notices issued to Queensland Cotton and the EPA has not requested the gin facility to close.” The news is sure to cause problems for growers, with Amanda Thomas from Macquarie Cotton Growers saying “the Queensland

Cotton gin not opening has definitely been a blow, and with the cotton coming in later this year it will create some pressure on the remaining two gins.” Amanda however remains optimistic for the season, saying it certainly has been a bigger year than expected. “Picking is fast approaching for many growers in the Warren area. The season started off very slowly and thankfully a mild March has meant we were able to fi ll in the top crop and end up with a better result than we were expecting halfway through the season. We are now crossing our fi ngers for some good dry picking weather to get the bales to the gins as soon as possible.” A Queensland Cotton spokesperson has said discussions with interested parties are ongoing.

Warren Shire Council general manager, Gary Woodman, says the new world class equestrian facility really puts Warren shire on the map. “A facility of this calibre will make Warren shire a sought-after equestrian destination for sporting and recreational events from a local to a national level,” says Mr Woodman. “This impressive asset will attract people from far and wide and create a positive flow-on effect for all of the shops, businesses and individuals within our Shire, as well as providing widespread economic benefits across the broader region.”

The project was funded by the NSW government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Fund and phase three of the Australian government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. The successful application was announced in 2018 after a collaboration between the council and the local user groups of the showground/racecourse including the Central West Adult Riding Club, Warren Pony Club, Warren Rodeo (Campdraft) Inc, Warren Jockey Club, Warren P&A, Warren Polocrosse Association and the St Mary’s P&F. “We are extremely lucky to have such a great facility in Warren,” said Jo Hooper from the Warren Pony Club. “Hopefully this will mean more equestrian events and opportunities for our area. I’m personally so excited to use this facility as it is perfect for little ones just learn-ing to ride. It is such a safe and controlled environment we really couldn’t ask for any better. Pony club camp this week will be using the new arena for show jumping.” User groups are working with council to make sure the arena is maintained and managed to the best possible standard.

Historic Nevertire Hall restored to former glory By HARRIET GILMORE THE Nevertire Community Hall has fi nally been restored after a storm caused extensive damage over two-years-ago. “The roof blew off and the ceiling caved in, there was water damage throughout the entire building including the original timber floorboards,” said Pauline Serdity, of the Nevertire Hall Trust. “It was a huge job and took some time to get the repairs completed due to COVID; there was a shortage of builders, tradespeople, and materials. We are very pleased it is fi nally back operational and look forward to hosting events, classes and more back in Nevertire again,” she added. Keith Podger from “The Seekers” performed at the Hall in March, the fi rst event to be held since the completion of repairs. “More than 60 came along to the performance - all had a wonderful time.” An official reopening of the hall event is being planned, with more details to be shared soon.

By HARRIET GILMORE THE second bi-annual Kentwell Cole Charity Day was held at the Warren Golf Club over the Easter weekend, with 39 players enjoying nine holes of golf and 10 ends of bowls, raising money for the Warren Chronically Ill Adult and Children Fund. The original Kentwell Cole Shield started as a bowls competition in the 1960s by

Ken Cole and Clarrie Kentwell. The charity day was founded by sons Graham Cole and Greg Kentwell to include golf and bowls in 2021. “Our dads were the best of buddies, were SP bookies together, next door neighbours, and took holidays together. Graham and I decided that we would try and continue with the shield but being golfers, we decided to incorporate both golf and

bowls. We had our fi rst event two-years-ago, which was a great success,” said Greg Kentwell. The overall winners on the day were Dave Rawlinson, Kate Poplin and Raymond Sayers. The donated proceeds of the day were accepted by Judy Ridley on behalf of the Warren Chronically Ill Adult and Children Fund, a local charity which assists

families with accommodation when required travel for medical treatment. The raffle, which was an esky donated by David Cole, a carton of beer donated by Denny Mara and three bottles of wine donated by Judy Ridley was won by Denise Wenzel. Second prize, a patchwork quilt donated by Janice Hardman, was won by Sandra Corrigan.

A prized bottle of scotch was put to auction after Dean Leach and Lisa Whalan both won a putting competition, and then consequently donated back the prize, with Greg Kentwell the winning bid in the auction. “With the event, the raffle that Judy (Ridley) ran on the day, and a little auction, $1360 was raised for the charity, a great day indeed!” added Mr Kentwell.

Special guests and the community came along and enjoyed morning tea after the service. Robyn and Greg Stephens brought their Army Jeeps to WCS for their ANZAC Service. Students enjoyed learning about and looking at the jeeps. Year 2 students studied local serviceman Lance Corporal Neil Simpson (AKA Barney) in HSIE this term. They wanted to acknowledge his service during the ANZAC ceremony. WCS students are asked to wear full school uniform and meet at the Warren Services Club before 11.45am and assemble to march from the Services Club to the Cenotaph on ANZAC Day, Tuesday, April 25. Mr Pascoe will commence duties next week as the council’s divisional manager of finance and administration. Mr Pascoe is assuming the position previously held by Darren Arthur before his retirement last year, and now temporarily held by treasurer, Jillian Murray. MORE than 200 locals enjoyed the sunshine at the annual Golden Fleece Race Day on Satur-day, April 15 at Warren. Seventy horses ran across six races, with the committee also hosting a catered luncheon and entertainment from band The Baker Boys. Pen Eins from the organising committee said it was great to see everyone out on

such a lovely day. “We sold 90 tickets to our catered luncheon and more than 200 through the gate this year, which is wonderful that the community is supporting a local event. “It’s only thanks to the very generous support and sponsorship from so many local businesses that we can host days like today. “It’s a hard thing to ask the same businesses continuously for backing but we are so

lucky so many are happy to support us,” said Mrs Eins. “It’s a great turnout today, more than we could have hoped for,” said Warren Jockey Club president Matt Collwell. “The grounds and track look fantastic, a credit to the council for all their hard work, and a big thank you to the committee and organising group for putting on such a cracking day,” Mr Collwell added.

RACING NG ORT REPORT By COLIN HODGES BACK in action after a break from racing, the talented Ronald Simpson rode a winning double, Cherry Blue and Gretzky, before a good crowd on Saturday, April 15 at Warren. Formerly from Brewarrina, Simpson is now apprenticed to Clint Lundholm and for the Dubbo trainer he won the 1600 metres Welsh Family Class One and Maiden Plate on the four-year-old grey gelding Cherry Blue. Raced by the McMahon family from Tullamore, Cherry Blue ($1.90) from last in the big field sliced through the pack to beat Miandelle (Billy Cray, $8) and Hoorini (Andrew Banks, $14) with Phone Home battling on for fourth after leading by four lengths. Gretzky, the comeback winning ride for Ronald Simpson the previous Saturday at Lightning Ridge, was again well ridden at Warren in the 1200 metres Macquarie Valley Rock And Sand Class Three Handicap. From back in the field, the Dar Lunn, Dubbo-trained Gretzky ($3.80) gained an in-

Winning doubles at Warren’s Golden Fleece race meeting side run to beat the leader Destiny’s Bounty (Will Stanley, $1.80 favourite) and One Man Band (Jake Barrett, $6). Sister and brother apprentices, Ashleigh Stanley and Will Stanley, fought out the fi nish of the 1400 metres Warren Services Benchmark 50 Handicap. Coming from near last in the 12 horse field, the Kylie Kennedy, Narromine-trained Fiveash (Ashleigh Stanley, $15) won by a neck from Neidr Dawn (Will Stanley, $2.50 fav.) with Punkzy (Ken Dunbar, $12) in third place. Wayne Collison, the father of Kylie Kennedy, made it a family winning double as the trainer of Luckyimwithaimee in the following race, the 1000 metres Paraway Pastoral Company Benchmark 50 Handicap. Will Stanley was aboard Luckyimwithaimee ($13) which came from fi fth on the home turn to score in a close fi nish from Speudosa (Jake Barrett, $4.40) and Pixies Choice (Shayleigh Ingelse, $6). A last start third at Lightning Ridge was followed by a win for the Brett Thompson, Gulgong trained Outside Edge at Warren in the 1400 metres Haddon Rig Maiden Plate. Outside Edge (Shayleigh Ingelse, $1.90 fav.) set the pace and fought off Kirameki (Wen-

dy Peel, $2.70) by a neck wth four lengths to Here’s Harry (Chelsea Hillier, $11). Trained at Gilgandra by Kieren Hazelton, Cuevas more than recouped the recent purchase price when winning the 1200 metres Macquarie Valley Couriers Maiden Handicap. Under very strong riding by Andrew Banks, Cuevas ($5) held off Dumbarton Castle (Will Stanley, $10) by a long neck with the leader Kubaba (Wendy Peel, $2 fav.) a close third.

Picnic jockeys tussled for cup points at Grenfell SEVERAL of the leading contenders for the picnic championship fi nal later this year clashed on Saturday (April 15) and an exciting fi nish eventuated in the 1400 metres Lane Cove Legends-Doug Allen Memorial Grenfell Picnic Cup. Racing before a big crowd at Grenfell, Bobby’s Secret and Namarari were the early leaders with the more favoured runners camped off the pace in the cup. Leeton-based Breanna Bourke, who won the recent Bourke Picnic Cup on All Words, brought the Dean Mirfi n, Bathurst-trained Our Blue Moon ($5) with a well-

timed run to beat Madison Point (Ricky Blewitt, $3.60) by threequarters of a length with Golden Eclipse (Shaun Cooper, $2.60 favourite) a close third, in front of the 2022 championship winner Hemsted. Veteran galloper Billy Bent Ear has an enthusiastic fan club and there was plenty of cheering when the Connie Greig, Dubbo-trained 10-yearold fought out the fi nish of the 1000 metres Commodities Grenfell Bracelet Handicap. Kimmylee (Ricky Blewitt, $1.80 fav.) loomed on the inside however Billy Bent Ear (Leandro Ribeiro, $2) making it 13 wins and 35 placings from 130 starts held on to win by a head with Bizarro (Tamsin Gough, $9) a handy third. Champion jockey Leandro Ribeiro completed a treble with later wins on Rock ‘N’ Tori (1400 metres IGA/Terry Brothers Class B Handicap) and Vigoureux in the 2000 metres Terry Brothers Carpet Court Forbes-Presidents Cup. Rock ‘N ‘ Tori ($3.60), trained at Moruya by Lauren Davies, travelled behind the leaders and was the winner by over two lengths from Here Comes Chum (Emily Waters, $6) and Gifted Curves (Tamsin Gough, $7) with Eight Willows backed from $5 to $2.80 favourite fi nishing unplaced. Grenfell Picnic Club bit the

bullet by staging a 2000 metre race and the reward was a good field for the President’s Cup Class One Trophy Handicap. Billie Frenado made it a true staying test by leading by eight lengths before the Joe Cleary, Queanbeyan, trained Vigoureux (Leandro Ribeiro, $5) steamed down the centre of the track to win from Victorian visitor All Too Creedy (Shaun Cooper, $3) and La Campanella (Emily Waters, $5 to $2.40 favourite). Joe Cleary had earlier won the 1200 metres Allan and Flachs Families Sweet Lauraine Class Two Trophy Handicap with Bonhomie (Sally Faulks, $3.40) which overhauled Frau Holle (Ricky Blewitt, $8) close to home with Blackhill Kitty (Leandro Ribeiro, $2.50 fav.) in third place. Seymour-based trainer Don Dwyer and Shaun Cooper the leading picnic jockey in Victoria, were rewarded for their long trip when winning the 1000 metres McAlister Motors Maiden Plate with Kulina. Placed six times at TAB meetings in Victoria, Kulina ($1.70 fav.) raced third to the home turn and fi nished best to beat Hollow Dollar (Leandro Ribeiro, $2) by a long neck with two lengths to Red Card Rosie (Emily Waters, $15).

By HARRIET GILMORE IT’S been a big week for junior rugby, with the NSW Waratahs hosting a training camp in Warren on Tuesday and the Macquarie Emus Junior Rugby Club welcoming the Narromine Gorillas for a seven’s carnival on Friday night. More than 40 local kids attended the rugby training camp hosted by a team from the NSW Waratahs, learning new skills, training tips and game play activities at Victoria Oval. “We are delighted to have the support of NSW Rugby here in Warren,” said presi-

dent of the Macquarie Emus Junior Rugby Club Andrew Austin. “This is the second rugby training day the Waratahs have hosted here, with one more planned later in the year and it’s just so great to see so many local kids just out there play-ing footy,” continued Mr Austin. Development officer for the NSW Waratahs Teagan Miller said the Warren training camp was one of more than a dozen they are hosting around the region these school holidays. “Today is one of our biggest camps with 42 kids, which is

really great numbers for us,” said Teagan. “We had to split into three age groups, and it’s just awesome to see everyone from under sixes who are just starting their rugby journey through to the over 12s here to learn more and keep rugby going in a small country town,” Teagan added. On Friday evening the Macquarie Emus held the fi rst ‘Friday night lights’ event for the sea-son at Victoria Oval. The club welcomed the visiting Narromine Gorillas Junior Rugby Club with around 150 kids participating in matches from under eights to

U12s and even featured a special high school age match at the end of the night. “It was a great night for the kids and their families to come together from across the area and experience some rugby. It is exciting to get great support from the community and credit should be given to the clubs involved as well as the fantastic support we have been getting from NSW Rugby development staff in recent times,” said Tim Whiteley, president of Western Plains Junior Rugby Union. “Many thanks to the NSW Waratahs support staff who refereed the games. A special

men-tion also to our parents who coordinated and assisted with the running of our teams, cooked the barbecue and assisted in the running of the canteen. We are forever thankful for your support and it’s because of you that we are able to provide these events for your chil-dren,” said Jo Noonan, Macquarie Emus secretary. Macquarie Emus have a number of events and training days coming up over the next few months, including a skills day in Narromine next week and another Friday night lights event in Coonamble in May.
