What a welcome for the Warren Star! By LUCIE PEART, CO-PUBLISHER WELL, after many months of waiting, the Warren shire now has a new print edition newspaper. The Warren Star hit the stands for the fi rst-time last Wednesday, and we got a truly rousing reception (which you can read about elsewhere in this edition.) While the shire has been without a newspaper now for 10 months, and throughout that time we were working away in the background. The publishers of the Warren Star (under PPNS News Media) are myself, Lucie Peart (also of Gilgandra Newspapers – Gilgandra Weekly, Nyngan Weekly) and co-publisher Tim Pankhurst (of the Dubbo Photo News and Orange City Life). We also jointly publish the Narromine Star, which was also launched after the loss of Narromine’s local paper. The former newspaper The Warren Weekly served Warren faithfully for decades, and we are indeed grateful to our predecessors of local news for their passion and commitment. The Warren Star will continue to serve the community of Warren as independent and local publishers. The paper will again be printed at Gilgandra Newspapers and sent over to Warren to be ready for purchase mid-morning Wednesdays. Continued page 4

Cenotaph at Macquarie Park. The ANZAC Day commemoration service included hymns led by Ros Jackson and Emma Cant, prayers from Mary-Anne Brennan and Rev Kenn Iskov and a commemoration address written by Andrew Brewer and read by Trevor Wilson. Andrew who was unable to attend, said in his address, ANZAC Day provides an opportunity to stop and reflect. To put away the business of everyday life and think about how we got here and what it means to be an Aussie, to be free to go about our days with relative freedom. “ANZAC Day should be about remembering those who served. Their legacy is all around us and to understand even in a small way, what those who have served have done for us should be what today is all about.” The wreath laying ceremony followed with dozens of wreaths placed on the Cenotaph in honour and remembrance for those that have served from community groups including the Returned Services, Warren Shire, the CWA, Hospital Auxiliary, Warren Central School, St Mary’s, Warren Pony Club and many more.

By HARRIET GILMORE THE community of Warren came together yesterday for ANZAC Day to pay their respects and honour those who have and those that continue to serve our country. Many from the community including past serviceman came together before 6am and joined Mayor Milton Quigley, Trevor Wilson, Rev Kenn Iskov and a Catafalque Party from the Bushman Rifles 1st/19th Battalion Royal NSW Regiment Bravo Company Dubbo at Dawn Service. Trevor Wilson, who lead the Dawn Service said on this day, above all days, we remember those Australian men and women who died or suffered in the great tragedy of war. “Each year we pay homage not only to those original ANZACs, but to all who died or were disabled in their service to this country. They enrich our nation’s history. Their hope was for the freedom of mankind and we remember with pride their courage, their compassion and their comradeship.” Later in the day, returned service men and women, representatives from many of the services and community groups including the local Police, SES and Fire & Rescue,

By HARRIET GILMORE A NEW belly cast service is now being offered for expectant mothers by child and family health nurse Nichole Callen, and Aboriginal health worker, Mary Small, together with the midwife program at the Warren Multi-Purpose Service (MPS). The new belly casts service allows mums to preserve and keep a physical memory of their pregnant bodies. “The belly cast is actually a really important tool for new mums and her baby. Many mums can struggle with their changing shapes and connection with their unborn baby and the belly cast allows them to keep a permanent memory of their bodies but also to physically see and feel the cast of their bodies and their babies growing inside them while pregnant,” said child and family nurse Nichole Callen. “Once the casts are made, we are then also hoping to hold a class with artist and Aboriginal health worker Mary Small

nal artwork, to be hung in the child and family health clinic at MPS. According to Ms Small, the artwork (pictured) represents mother and baby’s journey of growth together, their
time in our region here in Warren and connection to the MPS and nurses who look after them, and the river and bush food which feeds them both.
Introducing probationary constable Nicholas Trigazis By HARRIET GILMORE WARREN police have welcomed a new team member, probationary constable Nicholas Trigazis. Currently in his fi nal session of the associates degree in policing practice at Western Sydney University, PC Trigazis was posted to Warren in August. Originally from Sydney’s inner-west, this is PC Trigazis fi rst time living in the bush. “At fi rst I was nervous about the tree change but I’ve really enjoyed getting to know everyone and feel blessed to join such an honest and welcoming community!” he said. “When I was fi rst posted out to Warren the town was dealing with a flood crisis. I saw fi rst-hand how the townspeople reached out to those in need and I look forward to continually working with such a kind and hardworking community. Wednesday, April 26, 2023 Local News for the Warren Shire WARREN STAR
What a welcome for the Warren Star! From page 1 I DO miss my chats about Warren with Melissa Irving each week – and yes, I’m sorry we didn’t credit you for the Warren Museum story last week (teething problems!) The Warren Star has snagged a local journalist in Harriet Gilmore, and she has hit the ground running writing for the paper. Many of you will already know her so, please get in touch with her if you have something you would like to share with the paper. Readers will notice that things are a little different; that is to be expected. We are a different team. We are also starting from scratch, and we look to you our readers and advertisers to support us. Costs have also changed since last year so, yes, the paper is a bit more expensive, and our advertising rates are higher. Last year Gilgandra Newspapers experienced a 77 per cent increase in newsprint costs – just for the paper – and everything
else went up five to ten per cent. We will be offering a postal subscription and there is an online version available through our website. More details about these services are in elsewhere in this edition. A local newspaper is an ongoing partnership with the community, we need to work together to maintain this vital (and missed) service in Warren. Thank you for the support and encouragement received so far. And to those that have phoned me nearly each week asking about the return of the paper, all I can say is – we have (fi nally) arrived! I hope you enjoyed the fi rst edition of the Warren Star; we look forward to many more editions together. You may also have met Tim Cooper, he has been busy talking to business owners and community groups in Warren about the advertising opportunities with the paper.

Warren Young Woman competition By HARRIET GILMORE
Former Warren Young Woman competition winner Courtney Colwell with organiser Audrey Weston.

THE Warren Young Woman competition, formerly known as the Warren Showgirl, will be held a week before the Warren Show, at ‘Hatton’, Warren. Organisers are hoping local young ladies will consider entering the Young Woman Competition as a way to give back to their community and also gain experience. The Young Woman Competition is not a beauty pageant but aims to fi nd a young female ambassador for Warren and rural NSW. The winner will represent the Warren community and the show society, and if successful, the zone at next years’ state fi nals held at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Local solicitor Courtney Colwell entered the competition in 2012 and urges others to do the same. “The competition is a great opportunity for young women to represent their region and meet other like-minded women from throughout NSW. As Warren’s 2012 Showgirl, I was able to meet other young women who had incredible insight into the issues faced by their communities, many of whom I still keep in contact with today. I would encourage any young woman to simply give it a go – it is an amazing opportunity to gain confidence and leadership skills, and to show the world the wonderful young women within the Warren community.” Organiser Audrey Weston said local shows are a wonderful way for young women (and men) to expand their community involvement and enhance their careers and personal ambitions. “I see the day as an opportunity for young ladies to put their best foot forward, to enjoy a high tea and light luncheon with other entrants and Warren Show patrons, followed by a relaxed chat with the judges. Plus, there are some lovely prizes up for grabs thanks to our generous sponsorship from Principle Focus.” The competition is open to all young women of Warren from 18 to 26, but Mrs Weston recommends ladies be at least 21 so they have enough life experience and confidence to make the most of the event. Judging criteria includes presentation, personality and confidence, general and rural knowledge and community involvement. The committee wants the experience to be fun, friendly and enjoyable and Mrs Weston said “the three judges have either been competitors or have judged before and are a really fun trio. I guarantee they will make sure you relax and enjoy the experience!” See Classifieds

Political News & Opinion COULTON’S ULTON’S CATCH TCH UP Comment ment by K COULTON, MARK ral Member Federal arkes for Parkes
Down the Track for good food I MET up with the young people at Down The Track in Lake Cargelligo early last week where they were working hard in the Trackin’ Good food van. This food van is part of one of two streams offered by the Down The Track program, including hospitality and agriculture. Trackin’ Good gives young people an opportunity to build up their occupational skills in the hospitality sector, providing workplace experience and increasing employability. It’s inspiring, it’s making a difference, and it’s a credit to Lana Masterson and the team at Down The Track as well as all of the young people who put their hand up to have a go and get involved. If you are in Lake Cargelligo keep an eye out for their food van and grab yourself a bite to eat!
Visits to men’s sheds IT’S always great to be able to drop in and visit men’s sheds in the Parkes electorate and see the good work they are doing. These volunteer-led groups bring men from their communities together to work on projects and get alongside each other, which is so important. Thanks to the Copper City Men’s Shed and the Lake Cargelligo Men’s Shed for having a chat and showing me around recently. If your local Men’s Shed or community group would like a visit from me, please give one of my offices a call or send me an email.

Youth Week 2023 NSW YOUTH Week 2023 takes place between April 20-30 and includes many activities for young people across the state, so keep an eye out for what may be available near you. Young people like Sophie Clark from Cobar are inspiring, and it was a pleasure to meet her last week. For someone so young she has already achieved many wonderful things and on Wednesday I caught up with her to discuss her experiences as one of 20
students from across NSW chosen to participate in the Rural Youth Ambassador Program for 2022.
Improvements for Lachlan and Western Regional Services
This program encourages leadership potential in young people and gives them opportunities to develop their skills and speak up about issues that matter to them.
IN Condobolin and surrounding areas, Lachlan and Western Regional Services Inc provides a broad range of services and support, so it was wonderful that they have been able to carry out a few crucial improvements to their facilities. With $110,000 from the Australian government’s Future Drought Fund under the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) this
My congratulations to Sophie Clark, I know that she has a bright future ahead of her, and so do many young people across the Parkes electorate.
not-for-profit has been able to repair gutters, replace ceiling tiles, cement part of their roof and revamp their stormwater harvesting. It’s details like this that make a difference, and this initiative was designed to help agriculture-dependent communities enhance their preparedness for drought. I appreciate the fantastic team at Lachlan and Western Regional Services having a chat to me last week about the ways they support people across this part of NSW.

Warren remembers and pays their respects on ANZAC Day
From page 1
THE commemorative service concluded with renditions of the Australian and New Zealand national anthems and the military tradition of “The Ode” read by past serviceman Callum McClean, followed by The Last Post, a minute silence and the Rouse, signalling the time to return the flags to full mast. MC Trevor Wilson called on the community during his fi nal address at the end of the service, saying ANZAC Day is incredibly important and it’s vital we continue to march year after year in honour of those that have and continue to service our country. “It is vital we continue to pay our respects.” Mayor Milton Quigley said after the service at a BBQ provided by the Warren Shire Council that it was so wonderful to see so many here today to pay their respects, and that the Dawn Services was one of the largest he had ever seen in Warren.

ing a game, so in addition to trying to play well, enjoy yourself. Sue Burke, obviously back in great form won the day with a score of 70 on a countback from Lyn Rawlinson also on 70. Christine Tilley was third with 72. Deb Kentwell was the day’s scratch winner. Balls went to Sue, Lyn, Christine Tilley, Faye, Judy and Val. NTPs: fourth and 18th Faye, 13th Val, and 16th Judy. Thank you Alison for your great trophies and congratulations to the winners. Upcoming events: Today (Wednesday, April 26) is Uncle Clarries Trophy day. On the weekend we will play the Joan Robey and Robyn Downey Trophy Day, an 18-hole Stableford. Our sincere condolences and thoughts are going out to the Robey family at this very sad time. Your worst day at golf still beats your best day at work. The Dirty Birdie

By HARRIET GILMORE 75 JUNIOR horse enthusiasts descended on Warren last week for a three-and-a-halfday pony club camp, with some travelling as far as Broken Hill and Orange. The children took part in a huge program packed with many different disciplines to test their skills and improve their riding. The camp included lessons in sporting, dressage, show jumping, mounted games and working equitation as well as team penning and camp drafting thanks to cattle donated from the Chase family at
Waitara Angus Stud. The children also had the opportunity to ride in the multi-million dollar equestrian arena and the revamped cross country course, which was upgraded as part of recent showground improvements. Vice-president of the Warren Pony Club Eleanor Egan, said this year saw huge numbers and an influx of younger riders with half the camp participants under eight-years-old. “We run three or four camps every year, and this one was a huge success. We’ve already had feedback saying the Warren Pony Club camp is the

most well thought out and well organised camp they had attended.” The camp also put the new state of the art equestrian arena to the test, with Mrs Egan saying it was encouraging to see the arena was large enough to fit multiple disciplines in it, as well as offering the children a confi ned, safe area to ride in. “There has been ongoing communication with the shire about the surface and we are so close to getting the depth of the sand right for the safety of the horses – it has been trial and error as we all learn how
to best use the space, but so far things are looking pretty great after removing some sand recently. A special thanks to Darren Clarke and the Warren Shire Council for making that happen in a timely manner before camp – it made such a difference for the horses and the children. “The arena has been such a wonderful addition to the already amazing showground facilities. I think it will attract lots of people out west to compete and train. Everyone was very excited to use it and the coaches teaching in there had really positive feedback too.

“It was a spectacular setting for the camp fi nale, the Musical Troop Ride – where the children showcased their ensemble in front of spectators and camp friends,” Mrs Egan added. Warren Pony Club’s next event will be the zone four jamboree that was postponed last year, in June. “A big thank you to the volunteers, coaches, committee, and the families who come along, without them we wouldn’t be able to make it all happen,” concluded Mrs Egan.
