Warren Chamber Music Festival this weekend!

By HARRIET GILMORE THE Warren Chamber Music Festival is on this weekend, with three unique concerts across the weekend in Warren and Collie. Tickets are available to pick up in Warren purchase, online or will be sold on the door at each of the concerts.

But Warren Chamber Music Festival organiser Frances Evans said the concerts have sold out in the past so recommends getting your tickets now!

“Each of the three concerts over the weekend offer a unique program. The opening on Friday night will be lovely at the brand new Warren Museum. Saturday night at Collie Hotel will be an absolute roof lifter. In this concert, the Mendelssohn Octet will be performed for the fi rst time in central west NSW. Continued page 3

By HARRIET GILMORE GENERAL Manager for Destination Country and Outback NSW (DNCO) Lucy White spent two days in Warren last week meeting with Council and other key stakeholders to build Warren’s tourism offering.

DNCO is one of seven Destination Networks (DNs) in regional NSW. Its primary role is to represent and coordinate the growth and development of the Country NSW Visitor Economy.

The visit was heralded as a “big win” by Council and aimed to provide support, guidance and assist the recently created Economic Development and Visitation Office to develop plans, actions and strategies to build Warren’s visitor economy and visitor experiences.

Lucy White, general manager for the DNCO said Warren has a lot to offer tourists and massive potential for further development of products and experiences.

Lucy was keen to visit the region after meeting Council’s recently appointed Economic Development and Visitation Manager, Susan Balogh.

“I was energised and inspired by her enthusiasm and excitement for her role, and the many exciting tourism projects and opportunities existing or emerging in Warren and surrounds.

DNCO is to build industry capacity and capability through training, mentoring and supporting centres of excellence.

We also focus on sharing best practice and provide access to research and industry data,” said Lucy.

“Lucy has assisted in providing focus to strategies and programs, not just for Council but for the region and for the stakeholders that she was able to spend time with during her visit. The support and ongoing advice offered by DNCO will be invaluable to me personally as I work towards developing key strategies and actions plans for the Visitor Information Centre Renewal Business Plan, Tourism Destination Management Strategy as well as developing a Warren Shire Business Development Prospectus and Resident/Worker Attraction Prospecture.

“I am humbled by the personal support shown by Lucy and her energetic team and in their commitment to ensuring Warren Shire is well placed to develop our tourism offerings and plans. Through DNCO, Warren now has a significant link to important agencies within the local region, NSW and Australia,” said Susan.

As well as meeting with Council and attending and presenting at their Economic Development and Promotions Committee meeting, the DNCO met with key tourism organisations and event holders, including the Warren Museum and Art Gallery, Chamber of Commerce, Warren Chamber Music Festival and RiverSmart Australia/Window on the Wetlands Precinct.

Palliative Care Volunteer Support Group’s valuable service to region

By HARRIET GILMORE FOR over 30 years the volunteer group for Palliative Care has been supporting Warren residents and their families through their endof-life journey and fundraising to help those in need.

Palliative care addresses the physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of people with a life-limiting illness, to allow them to live as well and as comfortably as possible.

Meeting last week at Windows on the Wetland Centre for their monthly catch up, President Maryanne Brennan said there are some original members in the group who have been volunteering since the beginning.

“We started in the 80s and we are here for the community to support and guide people and their families when their lives may be coming to an end. It can be a very difficult time and we just want to help and support in any way we can,” said Maryanne.

“As well as emotional support and guidance, we also raise money to help people with cancer and other advanced diseases pay for their medical expenses as well as supporting the community nurses at the hospital.

This month, the group

will be hosting a Biggest Morning Tea event on Thursday 25 May from 10am at the home of Ron and Patty Plunkett to raise funds.

Maryanne said everyone is welcome to come along to the event at 6 Myra Street

and they’ll also be offering a morning tea delivery service for local businesses on the day.

The Palliative Care support group meets the fi rst Wednesday of every month and are always open to welcoming new members.

a trip to the Macquarie Marshes and a guided tour of the Burrima Boardwalk with director David Duncan. They identified the Macquarie Marshes as being the most unique and marketable tourism product in the region and suggested this be a major focus area for Warren tourism.

“I absolutely loved it and was so impressed by the extraordinary natural beauty, the pristine and incredible waterways, birdlife, the lagoons as well as the remarkable infrastructure that is the Burrima Boardwalk,” said Lucy White.

Lucy said she thoroughly enjoyed her visit to Warren, meeting all the friendly, knowledgeable and passionate locals who so obviously love their region and would defi nitely be back.

“Our choir will be performing with the Goldner String Quartet and one of Europe’s finest pianists now living in Australia.

Performing a brand new piece written for our choir to sing in this year’s festival,” said Mrs Evans.

The festival features performances by the renowned Goldner String Quartet, who will be joined by special guests including Peter Clark, Alexandra Partridge, Katie Yap and Warren’s very own choir and local musicians turned farmers, Frances and Nick Evans.

World class cellist Alexandra Partridge returns to Warren for her second Chamber Music Festival after performing during the inaugural festival in 2021.

Mrs Evans said “Alexandra is a

versatile cellist with a vast portfolio of performances and tours both nationally and abroad. We are so excited to have her back in town this year because not only has she performed with incredible orchestras around the world, she has also performed alongside musical artists including Neil Finn, Jacob Collier, Katy Perry, Michael Bublé and Hugh Jackman.”

Much loved Australian violinist Peter Clark will also be hosting a number of pre-concert chats on Friday night at the museum and at the Collie Hotel on Saturday. “If classical music is something a bit foreign to you, then the lively and humorous pre concert chats with Peter should not be missed. Three charged in Police operations last week THREE men have been charged as part of an ongoing investigation into property-related crime in rural areas throughout the region. An increased Police presence was noticed by many in the community on Wednesday. A spokesperson from the NSW Police said officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District attended a property on Orchard Street, Warren, as part of inquiries into an ongoing investigation.

Earlier this year (March 2023), Strike Force Dozer was established by officers from the Rural Crime Prevention Team and Orana Mid-Western Police District to investigate rural property crime throughout the Narromine, Warren, Trangie, Nyngan and Cobar areas.

Between Tuesday and Thursday last week (May 2-4), Rural Crime Investigators, assisted by officers from the Western Region Operational Support Group, served and executed seven Firearms Prohibition Order searches on residences in Warren, Narromine and Nyngan.

During the searches, Police located and seized various fi rearms parts, a large amount of ammunition, a Gel Blaster, a sawn off fi rearm barrel, a baton, a quad bike, Cannabis plants, methylamphetamine and Cocaine.

Three men were arrested as a result of the operation.

Two men, aged 30 and 51, were both charged with possess ammunition without holding a license/ permit/ authority; both are due to appear before Warren Local Court on Friday 30 June 2023.

A 23-year-old man was charged with breach AVO and possess prohibited drug; he was refused bail before attending Dubbo Local Court on Thursday, May 4, 2023.

Inquiries are ongoing.

By COONAMBLE TIMES WHILE good prizemoney promises to lure cowboys, cowgirls, and campdrafters to Coonamble for the June Long Weekend Rodeo and Campdraft, a packed program and extra camping options will make it easier for visitors to stay for the full experience.

“2022 was our biggest ever and we’re aiming to be even bigger and better this year,” said committee secretary Steven Butler.

With at least 66 previous events under their shiny belts, the organising team have mastered the art of giving the crowds a rich and authentic rodeo experience from dawn until well after dark.

As close to the action as you can get while preserving the onsite camping for an ever-growing contingent of competitors, the unpowered campsites will be security-supervised, have toilets on site and lighting towers at key points. “We’re responding to requests from travellers as far afield as Tasmania and the Territory,” Mr Butler says.

“The town’s accommodation can get booked out and this campsite is a stone’s throw from the showers at the local caravan park.

“Coonamble Shire Council has really got behind us and we’ve put away a few acres adjacent to the showground that they’ll prepare for us.”

Visitors can ‘park and play’ for the weekend because they can just walk across to the rodeo ground or catch a courtesy bus into town. The action gets underway on the Friday with the Campdraft competition expanding to accommodate more nominations.

“We always get more than 1500 campdraft nominations and have to turn people

away,” Mr Butler said.

“We’ve been very fortunate that a local grazier has offered up to 2000 head of cattle if we need them.

“The interest in these sports continues to grow – we already have 80 nominations for the novice barrel racing – it’s huge,” he said.

After the main rodeo and campdraft events on the weekend, Junior Rodeo events run predominantly on the Monday, although you’ll still see the Mini Bulls throughout the weekend.

Dedicated local volunteers for the Coonamble Rotary Club and Coonamble Bears Rugby League will ensure the crowds remain well fed throughout the weekend.

A wide variety of retail stalls will also be on hand to kit out competitors and spectators with everything they need.

Live music and rodeo have always gone hand in hand with the Coonamble Long Weekend Rodeo and the ever-popular Dan Murphy will be playing in the XXXX Bar on Saturday night, followed on Sunday night by Duncan Ferguson at the Stockman and Co bar in the Showground Pavilion.

For visitors, 2023 marks the fi rst year that campsites will be opened just across the road from the main arena.

Insurance advice from Warren Shire, embargoes lifted LIKE many in the county, residents of Warren have been experiencing premium hikes and trouble accessing insurance services. A number of factors including last year’s flooding, the number and frequency of natural disasters and inflation are causing these problems.

Warren Shire Council has been investigating these reports and liaising with the Insurance Council of Australia (ICOA) to address these issues.

ICOA said the embargoes recently placed on the area due to the high likelihood of an event or loss have been lifted. The removal of this embargo on 1 April 2023 means the likelihood of loss and a significant event has passed and new insurance policies can be taken out.

The ICOA said factors including the costs of natural disasters are increasing insurance premiums and advises consumers research the most competitive quotes to best suit their individual circumstances.

Warren Shire Council has been commended on its flood risk mitigation activities and advised that submitting flood study data to the National Flood Insurance Database may further assist insurers in their assessments.

Council has also requested the NSW Reconstruction Authority and Recovery Australia (National Recovery and Resilience Agency) follow up on this matter and further advice will be provided to residents once it has been received.

Jason Owen to sing John Denver in Warren DON’T miss out on Jason Owen at Warren Services Club later this month. The popular entertainer will be singing many of Denver’s most loved songs from his fourth album, Jason Owen sings John Denver: the 20th Anniversary album.

When the album was released in 2017 to mark 20 years since Denver’s passing, it became an instant smash hit, going straight to number one on the Australian country music charts.

Owen has also released his version of one of Denver’s greatest singles,’ Thank God I’m a Country Boy’. The song, originally released in 1974 and went to number one worldwide, is still considered one of the greatest country songs of all time.

More funding for community infrastructure projects

ANOTHER round of funding for councils has been announced as part of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program.

Federal Member for Parks Mark Coulton said more than $12 million will be allocated to the 18 councils in the Parkes electorate, including $1.033 million for the Warren Shire Council.

While welcoming the funding Mr Coulton said it is imperative that guidelines attached to the funding be announced immediately.

“Without knowing what they will or won’t be able to do with this money it is very difficult for councils to plan their capital works projects, so these details matter.

“It’s been very frustrating for councils across my electorate to have to wait so long before they can even begin to plan their own budgets and it is unclear why there has been this level of delay.

“I have called on Labor to release the funding allocations in full for the LRCI program; I now call on them to release the guidelines so that councils can get on with putting this money to use and planning their priority projects.

By HARRIET GILMORE SEASONED shearer Emma Billet isn’t scared of a hard day’s work, having been a leading shearer in the region for over 12 years, and her new venture is no different.

Emma has recently launched a new business offering mobile crutching thanks to a new three stand trailer.

Emma says she has been flat out since she purchased the trailer two months ago, with no one based in the area offering the same service. She just fi nished a job out at merino stud Haddon Rig, where her and the team crutched 13,000 sheep and has plenty more jobs on the horizon.

“It’s the way of the future (mobile crutching) I think.

The convenience of being able to set up anywhere on a farm, and get the job done is really appealing.

With the size and shape of sheep these day’s it’s becoming more and more difficult for people to physically drag the sheep out and move them around like we used to.

With the mobile trailer, we can eliminate the catch and drag aspect you have in a shed or big yard. We can just set up our portable yards, the dogs move them up the race straight on to the trailer, we crutch them and then they go straight back out to the paddock. We can do 1,500 to 2,000 sheep a day with all three

In a predominantly male profession, Emma has been an advocate for females in the industry for some time. She’s

used to being the only women in the shed but works just as hard as the men and has long had the support of the sheep graziers and studs in the Warren Shire and beyond.

without my team, the support my shearing contractors and of course my dogs.

“This what I love to do and it’s awesome to have such great support out here,” said Emma.

Changes to the PBS risk unintended consequences I HAVE warned that recently announced changes to the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme (PBS) may have unintended consequences for our towns.

The Labor government has announced a coming change to dispensing limits so that 60-days-worth of medicines can be accessed at one time in order to halve costs for patients, however many local pharmacists have contacted me appalled at this proposal.

The unintended consequences of these changes could not only make local pharmacies in our towns unsustainable by drastically impacting their dispensary income, but also increase the risk of medication misadventures and hospitalisations as patients access medicines in larger quantities.

The impact of 60-day dispensing has also been flagged as a likely cause of additional supply issues, with these expected to hit regional towns hardest – yet another example of city-centric policy making.

I urge the Labor government to reconsider the impact of this change and consider more broadly the negative effects this could have on our regions.

More funding for Parkes electorate councils FUNDING has been announced for councils in the electorate of Parkes through the highly successful Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program.

While I welcome this funding, which includes another $12,255,336 allocated to the 18 councils in the Parkes electorate, I’m calling on the Labor government to release the guidelines for the whole of phase four LRCI program funding.

Councils need to know the guidelines around this funding in order to begin planning how they can use this money for their communities. I also call on the Labor government to assure councils that this incredibly helpful program, ini-

In Heart Week, Cardiac Catheter Lab completes its 500th angiogram

DUBBO Hospital’s Cardiac Catheter Laboratory reached a significant milestone last week.

Advanced Trainee Cardiology at Dubbo Hospital, Dr Neil Goonetilleke, revealed that the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory completed its 500th angiogram since opening last year, a timely reminder of the importance of heart disease prevention during Heart Week.

This event is held the fi rst week of May, to raise awareness of the importance of heart health and positive steps people can take to help reduce risk of heart disease, Dr Goonetilleke said.

“Chronic diseases, like coronary disease, remain a major concern in our District but, since opening the Cardiac Cath Lab here in Dubbo, it has significantly improved access to this life-saving care for patients all over the District,” Dr Goonetilleke said.

“As one component of our District-wide cardiology service, we’ve treated patients from here in the Dubbo community but also from remote areas like Lightning Ridge, Bourke and Walgett,” he added.

To mark Heart Week 2023, Western NSW Local Health

“Maintaining a healthy diet, doing regular physical activity, and quitting smoking are three positive steps that can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease, particularly by helping to reduce and control blood pressure and cholesterol,” Dr Goonetilleke said.

District is reminding communities of the simple steps they can take to keep their heart healthy, he explained.

“While the service has been incredibly successful so far,

and reduced the need for patients to travel for cardiac care, we can all take simple steps to help keep us out of hospital,” he said.

“Maintaining a healthy diet,

doing regular physical activity, and quitting smoking are three positive steps that can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease, particularly by helping to reduce and con-

trol blood pressure and cholesterol,” Dr Goonetilleke said.

Understanding heart health and other risk factors like age, family history, diabetes and obesity is also incredibly important, he added.

“I encourage everyone to speak to their doctor and have a Heart Health Check to understand and manage their risk.

“Don’t ignore any warning signs as heart disease can very easily lead to heart attack, or failure.

“Warning signs of a heart attack include chest pain, arm or shoulder pain, jaw pain and shortness of breath. If you have these symptoms, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.”

The Dubbo Hospital Cardiac Catheter Laboratory began operations in June 2022 and was the fi nal service to come online as part of the $306 million Dubbo Health Service Redevelopment.

Groceries costing way too much?

Blame supermarket giants, farmers say SPENDING way too much at the supermarket? Blame giant retailers, not our farmers, our largest primary producer representative body says.

High grocery prices currently being experienced are the fault of big businesses who are abusing market power, the NSW Farmers have claimed.

With shelf prices for common food commodities increasing at far higher levels than our inflation rate, they are now calling upon the Federal Government to crack down on the near-monopoly status of these companies.

“We know food is the second-largest household expenditure behind rent or mortgage repayments, and the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported food spending increased by 12.8 per cent

in the 12 months to February 2023,” NSW Farmers Business, Economics and Trade Committee Chair, John Lowe, said.

“But, we also know the cost of groceries is increasing, not just because of inflation, but because of years and years of consolidation in the food processing and retail sector,” he added.

Farmers had campaigned long and hard for diversity in the marketplace and fairness in dealings with these companies, Mr Lowe said, with a voluntary “Food and Grocery Code” designed to improve the behaviour of retailers and wholesalers towards suppliers, he added.

has led to incredible power imbalances that are driving up the cost of food for consumers,” he said.

While the Code had made some improvements, he said that a recent Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) report found it had “significant shortcomings”.

“If the Federal Government is serious about tackling some of the cost-of-living problems... then it needs to listen to the expert advice of the nation’s competition watchdog and make our markets fairer for everyone,” Mr Lowe believes.

“Implementing recommendations from the ACCC’s 2020 Perishable Agricultural Goods Inquiry would be an excellent starting point to bring food prices down for

consumers.

“The entire reason the ACCC came to be in the fi rst place was to protect the consumer, and it’s about time these recommendations were taken seriously,” Mr Lowe concluded.

Among the ACCC recommendations NSW Farmers wanted to see implemented were: • Making the Food and Grocery Code mandatory with civil penalties for breaches • An economy-wide prohibition on unfair trading practices • An overhaul of the current merger and acquisition approval process.

There also needs to be an analysis of supply chain profits with a focus on markups and price-gouging, NSW Farmers believes.

Fed money but no guidelines holding back council projects, Coulton says AS all practical country people know, announcing something is a world away from delivering it.

Lack of detailed guidelines on new Federal Government grants for regional councils means work cannot start on vital roads and infrastructure projects and roads, Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton has said.

Mr Coulton recently announced another $12,255,336 for 18 councils in his electorate – including for Warren Shire, Dubbo, Gilgandra, Narromine and Bogan – under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program.

While welcoming the funding, Mr Coulton said that now is the time that the specifics on the how, what, when, and where, the money can be spent is provided.

“Without knowing what they will or won’t be able to do with this money, it is very difficult for councils to plan their capital works projects, so these details matter,” Mr Coulton said.

“It’s been very frustrating for councils across my electorate to have to wait so long before they can even begin

to plan their own budgets, and it is unclear why there has been this level of delay,” he added.

The Commonwealth money is part of $250 million allocated nationally under Phase Four, Part B, of the LRCI program.

However, he said that the Government hasn’t even released the guidelines yet for local councils to commit spending for Part A of the same program, which was announced in February, for a total of more than $21 million locally.

“I have called on Labor to release the funding allocations in full for the LRCI program,” he said.

“I now call on them to release the guidelines so that councils can get on with putting this money to use, and planning their priority projects,” Mr Coulton added.

The newly-announced funds include $1.24 million for Dubbo, and more than $500,000 each for Bogan, Narromine and Gilgandra councils.

Warren Shire Council has been allocated $377,967 in the Phase Four-Part B funding, which adds to the $655,258 allocated in Part A.

Mr Coulton said that he would also like to see the Labor Government commit to the ongoing continuation of the LRCI program, beyond the current Phase Four of the spending initiative.

“This program was initially created by the Coalition Government to assist councils during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mr Coulton explained.

It has “maintained its relevance in supporting local governments during natural disasters over recent years”.

The program is essentially designed to provide extra funding to help councils undertake improvements to locally-identified infrastructure in their local government areas.

“Our communities benefit directly from this funding, with councils being the level of government which is closest to the people they serve,” he said.

“I call on the Labor Government to commit to making the LRCI program an ongoing program beyond Phase Four, as recognition of the vital role of councils in our regional communities,” Mr Coulton concluded.

It’s a fitting time to reflect on that old Bible saying “you reap what you sow”. It’s illogical to hope to harvest chickpeas from a paddock where wheat was sown!

The Bible says it also doesn’t make sense to expect happiness if we sow bitterness, peace if we plant anger.

So we can choose to sow good seeds into our hearts, and into the lives of others.

Here’s what the Bible says; “You will always reap what you sow! Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful desires will harvest the consequences of decay and death. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So don’t get tired of doing what is good. Don’t get discouraged and give up, for we will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time. Whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone...” Galatians 6: 7b-10a.

By HARRIET GILMORE 52 golfers gathered on Friday to play a round and remember mate Scott “Bing” Bryant at the annual Bing’s Bash Golf Day. Bing passed away in January 2017 and Jarrad Noonan and other colleagues he worked with at Essential Energy created Bing’s Bash as a way to remember their mate. “Each

year it gets bigger and bigger.

We created the day so all Bing’s friends and the community can come together, have a laugh and always remember him.”

Jarrad said “this year’s event was a great day, and the weather was kind. Tom, Bing’s brother came along as well as more than 50 locals. It was a cracking day with lots of fantastic memories shared.”

CORONATION QUICHE INGREDIENTS Pastry

125g plain flour Pinch of salt 25g cold butter, diced 25g lard 2 tablespoons milk Or 1 x 250g block of shortcrust pastry

Filling 125ml milk 175ml double cream 2 medium eggs 1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon Salt and pepper 100g grated cheddar cheese 180g cooked spinach, lightly chopped 60g cooked broad beans or soya beans

METHOD

Sieve the flour and salt into a bowl; add the fats and rub the mixture together using your finger tips until you get a sandy texture.

Add the milk a little at a time and bring the ingredients together into a dough.

Cover and allow to rest in the fridge for 30-45 minutes Flour the work surface and roll the pastry out to a 5mm thick circle, a little larger than the top of the 20cm tin.

Line the tin with the pastry, cover and rest for 30 minutes in the fridge.

Preheat the oven to 190°C, and line the pastry case with greaseproof paper, add baking beans and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and baking beans, and reduce the oven temperature to 160°C. Beat together the milk, cream, eggs, herbs and seasoning.

Scatter half of the grated cheese into the blind-baked base, top with the chopped spinach and beans and herbs, then pour over the liquid mixture.

Gently stir to even out the filling.

Sprinkle over the remaining cheese.

Bake for 20-25 minutes until set and lightly golden.

WCS Year 12 students attended the Careers Expo at Dubbo College on Thursday 5 May 2023. Here they engaged with tertiary providers and increased their awareness of post school opportunities. Students also attended a UAC session to deepen their understanding of the ATAR and how to apply to university. Thank you to the Careers team at Dubbo College for organising this invaluable event for Western Plains schools.

Fletcher Hunt captained the Western Secondary Open’s Rugby League team to a win over North West on Friday 28 April. He has now been selected to play in the Greater Western Rugby League team to play at the Combined High School 18’s Rugby League section trials at Wollongong in May. Well done Fletcher.

Congratulations Kayden, Charlie, Summa, Lewis, Racheal, Adelaide, Madi, Astra and Sophie for successfully starting their Statement of Attainment Certificate I in Active Volunteering (CAV I) through the Aboriginal Learning and Engagement Centre. Education and Training Out West teachers, Cathy Jones and Kerry Perrin, will assist the students with growing workplace and multi literacy skills and writing a CV whilst completing the course.

Sport Warren Junior Netball 2023 competition gets underway WARREN Junior Netball kicked off their 2023 Competition with a Meet and Greet event last week with this year’s teams announced, and players had a chance to meet their coaches and attend a training session.

Two competitions will run on Wednesday afternoons this year: NetSetGo (9 years and under) and Super Wednesday (10 years and over), with a total of 62 registered players. The teams in the NetSetGo competition will focus on learning skills and having fun along the way. This form of competition is a wonderful introduction to netball for those just beginning their journey in the sport.

Five teams will compete in the Super Wednesday competition in 2023, with the standard of play expected to be high throughout the season!

First game for both competitions is on Wednesday 10th May. This year we also have three teams representing the Warren Wildflowers in the Dubbo Netball competition on Saturday mornings: U10s, U11s and U12s. It is great for the future of Warren Netball to have so many younger players eager to play at a higher level, and we wish all teams the best for their season, which commenced on Saturday 29th April.

Other upcoming activities for War-

ren Netball Club include the annual Ridley Trudgett Netball Gala Day on Friday 30th June, which is a round robin event for primary schools from the region.

The Committee is very grateful to all those who have volunteered their time to ensure these competitions take place (coaches, umpires, scorers and other helpers). None of these activities would occur without so many people generously giving their time each week.

The Committee would also like to acknowledge the incredible support from the local business community for their sponsorship of the 2023 Competition. A big thanks to Warren Services Club, Adele’s Cutting Cottage, Collie Hotel, Collingwood Herefords and Kelpies, Ellerslie Lane, Hutcheon and Pearce, Lovett and Green, Macquarie Toyota, MCC Hydraulics, Nutrien Wilson Russ, Outback Active, Richardson and Sinclair, Rod Thornton Electrical, Three Rivers Machinery, Uncle Clarries, Warren Golf Club, Warren IGA, Warren Joinery and Hardware, Warren Motor Inn and WRL Engineering. Strong win for the Pumas at home

By HARRIET GILMORE THE Warren Pumas had a strong win, defeating the Brewarrina and Bourke Barbarians 64-12 on Saturday. The fi rst home game of the season was a physical one, with Bre/Bourke putting the pressure on for most of the match but unable to match the Pumas in the end.

Having travelled with only a few reserves, Bre/Bourke struggled to keep up the physicality and the score blew out in the second half.

Ben Gant was a standout, scoring three of the Pumas 10 tries, converting seven as well as receiving the three points and players player. Dave Jenkins scored a double, with other tries going to Bill Castleden, Jack Kelly, Peter Nadin, Tom Bruce and Ulrich Eins. Points went to

Bill Castleden (two) and Tom Bruce (one). Bre/Bourke try scorers were Jason Morton and William Foristal, with Baden Baker converting one goal.

The Pumarettes also had a strong fi rst game of their 7s Touch season, drawing 15 all with the Bourke Ewes. Tries went to Kaitlin Staniforth, Alison Ruskin Row and Sophie O’Brien, who was also players player for the game. Points went to Alison Ruskin Rowe (three), Elzeth Castleden (two) and Sophie O’Brien (one).

Next week, the Pumas and Pumarettes travel to Cobar to take on the Camels and the Bactrians for their Ladies Day. Tickets are on sale now for Warren’s Ladies Day, which is being next home game, on 20 May. See the Warren Pumas Facebook page for full details.

By COLIN HODGES FROM humble beginnings as a jockey with an occasional ride at western area tracks, Scott Singleton is now a successful trainer with over 300 winners, the most recent being Dollar Magic in the inaugural $40,000 Arrowfield Queen Of The West on Saturday, May 6, at Dubbo.

Run over 1200 metres as a benchmark 74 handicap the Queen Of The West attracted not only a good quality field of fi llies and mares but also a big crowd.

Placed in recent highways at Randwick and Hawkesbury either side of a stylish win at Scone, Dollar Magic started the $2.20 favourite and was given a nice run behind the leaders by Serg Lisnyy.

Taking control in the straight, Dollar Magic sprinted to a two and a half lengths win over the leader Transplant (Ronald Simpson, $6) and Majority (Clayton Gallagher, $3.30).

First leg of a double for Scott Singleton was the Dubbo-owned Aquarter in the 1000 metres Active Earth Landscape Supplies Maiden Handicap.

Rising star Joey Walker runner up at Cobar Open Golf Comp RISING young golf star Joey Walker headed out to the Cobar Golf Open representing the Warren Golf Club over the weekend. Despite the windy and cold conditions, Joey came runner-up A Grade Scratch after a sudden death playoff. After three holes Cobar golfer Alec Fraser and Joey were still grid locked to take them back to the 1st for their fourth hole, with Alec coming away with the victory. Joey also won the juniors. The hospitality from the Cobar Bowling and Golf Club was top notch.

ON Wednesday, May 3, we played Daphne Calvert and Jan Barclay’s Trophy Day. Being a beautify Autumn day we played an 18 hole stroke, May medal 3rd round of LGU. Christine Tilley was the winner of the day with net 71, Tish McAlary running 2nd with net 75.

Christine also the scratch winner. Thankyou Daphne and Jan for your sponsorship.

Saturday 6th May we had our May medal 3rd round LGU and 1st round of the handicap cup, in conjunction with the Robyn Downey and Joan Robey’s Trophy Day being a stableford.

With a lovely score and a broken handicap winner of the trophy day was Val Soulsby with 40stableford points. Val was also the winner of the medal with net 67, runner up Deb Kentwell net 70. Scratch winner being Deb with 88. Congratulations also to Tish McAlary on winning the raffle (a delicious homemade lemon meringue pie).

Bathurst trainer Roy McCabe has a reputation for improving gallopers transferred to his stable and such is the case of Our Orator, winner of the 1300 metres Phylli By Laura Hall Country Boosted Maiden Plate.

From midfield, Our Orator (Serg Lisnyy, $3.60 to $3 favourite) powered home for a three lengths win over Warrior’s Kiss (Kody Nestor, $10) and Lulla’s Attack (Chelsea Hillier, $41).

Following the resounding success of the inaugural Queen Of The West meeting, Dubbo Turf Club manager Sam Fitzgerald is already planning to make it an even bigger event in the future.

22 WARREN local’s Harry Hammond, Fletcher Hunt and Braith Boyd who all play for the Nyngan Tigers under 18s were selected to be apart of the Group 11 rep side who took home the victory 30-22 against Group 10 in Blayney on Saturday.

Group 11 got off to a great start going in to half time 20-4. However, in the second half Group 10 were invited back into the game with dropped balls off kickoffs and several penalties from Group 11. Group 11 dug in deep and were good enough to hang on to the win after a solid game of footy.

Group 10 v Group 11 representative games have been a fi xture on the Western Division Rugby League calendar for over 50 years.

The games have always been played in the right spirit, fair but tough and creating a lot of interest in the Rugby League Community. Whilst this year’s game was in the heart of Group 10 in Blayney in 2024 it will head back to Group 11 territory at a venue to be determined. This allows the benefits of the fi xture to be shared amongst other Rugby League Communities and help the game to grow and prosper.

EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD local Bianca Fuller recently competed at the 2023 Australian Swimming Championship. Held at the Gold Coast from 17 – 20 April, the Championship is the largest annual event on the Swimming Australia calendar and saw more than 3,200 swimmers take to the pool.

Bianca qualified for six events including the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, the 50m and 100m butterfly and the 200m individual medley.

Bianca recently relocated to Canberra after completing year 12 at Kinross in Orange, to train with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) under coach Shannon Rollason.

Bianca’s father, Phil Fuller said she swam very well up against the best in the country and qualified for the 18-19 age fi nal in all six of her events which was a fantastic effort. “Bianca also improved her personal best times in four of these events which is what she aims for when she competes and this level.”

Bianca’s next competition will be at Olympic Park for the Sydney Open and Uni Nationals Swimming on 12 – 14 May then Melbourne to compete in the World Championship selection trial in June.

“Bianca is hoping to improve her personal times further as she chases her dream to make the Australian swimming team. We’d also like to WRL for their ongoing support in sponsoring her,” said Phil.
