Judging took place at the home of Sophie and Angus O’Brien at “Hatton” last Sunday with entrants and their supporters, Warren P&A Association committee members, judges, and former showgirls, all in attendance.

Entrants Zoie Rookledge, Shaunna Stumer, and Loretta, all enjoyed the high tea with the guests before their 15-minute interview with a panel of three judges.

The competition aims to fi nd a confident, articulate, young woman who is passionate about rural living, and who can be an ambassador for Warren, the district and, ultimately, rural NSW. Contestants are judged on personality, confidence, am-

Day, and the development weekend in Dubbo was really fun,” she recalled.

“I met a lot of like-minded young woman, who I am still friendly with today,” she added.

Ms Turnbull said that the event is a wonderful experience.

“I really encourage any young ladies to have a go.

Just entering the competition gives you so much confidence and you never know where it will lead,” Ms Turnbull said.

The judges on Sunday all had a lot of experience in the Show circuit and comprised Josie Anderson from Dubbo, a former state finalist; and Pip and Simon Archer from Mendooran, who have been involved in the Mendooran Show for close to 20 years.

“Warren P&A Association is immensely proud to have such a quality candidate as our 2023 Young Woman,” President, Justin Sanderson, said after the announcement.

PATHFINDERS and UNICEF Australia are partnering to provide free birth certificates to First Nations people in regional NSW. Over two weeks, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Cobar, Nyngan, Warren, Gilgandra, and Coonabarabran are invited to attend face-to-face sign-up days where they can apply for and receive their birth certificates.

The five events are part of the Pathfi nders National Aboriginal Birth Certificate Program (PNABC) which is open to parents who would like to get birth certificates for their children, as well adults who don’t have a birth certificate.

Pathfi nders CEO, Alan Brennan, said there are an estimated 200,000 Aboriginal people around Australia who do not have their birth certificates and are unable to fully participate in the community.

“A birth certificate is essential for enrolling in school, getting a driver’s license, voting, opening a bank account, getting a tax fi le number, a passport and applying for government benefits.

“Pathfi nders and UNICEF Australia know that a birth certificate is a critical step in giving children opportunities in life, but it is never too late to get a birth certificate. Even adults have a lot to gain from getting their birth

certificate and we’re hopeful for a large turnout on the sign-up days.

Over the two weeks, Pathfi nders estimates it will help around 100 people from northwest NSW to get their birth certificate.

At each event, Pathfi nders will be joined by experts from the community such as Local Land Council members, who can help make the process simple and answer questions.

UNICEF Australia’s chief advocate for children, Nicole Breeze said having your birth recognised and having a birth certificate is extremely important.

“Without a birth certificate, a person’s ability to participate fully in society can become difficult over

their lifetime. For children this can mean challenges accessing early learning opportunities, critical health checks and support that are vital for their development.

“Globally, UNICEF is committed to enabling birth registration and legal identification for all children as part of the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. In Australia, too many children have not had their birth registered or do not have a birth certificate.

“UNICEF Australia and Pathfi nders want every child to start their life with equal opportunities and a birth certificate is the fi rst step,” she said.

From page 1 “Loretta has had a lot of experience in local-level shows, including stud and prime cattle judging, photography, and young judges competitions.”

Loretta and her partner, Will Nicholas, moved from Charters Towers, central Queensland, to Warren in July last year, and both now work at “Kiameron” for the Egan family.

Loretta also has a Bachelor of Agribusiness from the University of Queensland and is the Livestock Manager at “Kiameron”.

When not working and looking after her animals, she enjoys touch football and recreational shooting.

Speaking after the presentation, Loretta said receiving the award was a huge honour.

“I’m so excited and am really thrilled to be the 2023 Warren Young Woman,” she said.

“I haven’t lived here long, but I’m excited to become more involved in the Warren Show and community.”

Zoie Rookledge works as a barista in War-

ren and has completed Certificate III in Hospitality, Certificate II in Kitchen Operations, and is currently completing a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.

Zoie also volunteers at both the Warren Youth Centre and Window on the Wetlands and, in her spare time, enjoys singing, reading, bike-riding, and knitting.

Twenty-three-year-old Shaunna Stumer has completed a Certificate IV in Accounting and is a Legal Secretary at Lovett and Green.

Shaunna enjoys water-skiing, tennis, and travelling, and says she entered the competition to develop people skills and represent the Warren community.

Winner Loretta will attend a development weekend for regional Young Women at Dubbo early next year but, before that, Show-goers will be able to meet her at the Warren Show this Saturday.

Warren P&A Association also thanked Principle Focus, and a number of local families, for their generous sponsorship of the competition.

Jesus showed us, how to live, “happily ever after”

By HOPE KELLY, YOUNGLIFE WARREN DO you ever wish you could read the end of your life’s story? Will it read, “…And they lived happily ever after”? How will it turn out in the end? Happy or miserable?

Jesus knew the end of his story. Luke 9:51 says, “As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.”

Jesus knew what good he needed to do, and could not be deterred from his path. A torturous death on a Roman cross awaited him in Jerusalem, but Jesus resolutely stepped into it. Here is a man who was not dominated by fear, suffering, or even death.

How was Jesus so resolute in such suffering? He knew the end of his story. He knew that the lows of his journey were insignificant, when compared to the happiness of his destination.

“For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2) His resolve was driven by so much joy, that he mocked death as meaningless. Resolve comes from the solid hope that in the end, Jesus wins.

When Jesus resolutely set-out for Jerusalem, it was not only his joy he kept in mind, but also those who follow him. Those who make Jesus their king, know the outcome of their story too — they reign with Jesus. In the end, Jesus wins.

When we know the outcome of the bigger story, we can fit our story in with the whole. Those who believe Jesus wins and surrender to his rule, should live lives of joyful resolve and confidence — not even death can change the happiest of endings!

WARREN went “red” last Wednesday for National Simultaneous Storytime with a live performance by hit ABC children’s entertainers, The Beanies.

Warren Shire Library decided to “Paint the town REaD” for the event and hosted more than 100 children from the community and also from the St Mary’s and Warren Central schools, plus the Warren Preschool, and Little Possums at the Warren Sporting and Cultural Centre.

As a special treat, former director of Warren Preschool, Chris Crisp, was invited out of retirement to read this year’s story, The Speedy Sloth, before the children were whipped into a frenzy for the live show.

National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by Australians, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, homes, and children’s facilities, across the country.

Vinnies Lifetime Service Award: 37-good years’ work by Treacy

By HARRIET GILMORE “VINNIES” are one of those charities that we all know and see doing good work in the community, usually with little fanfare.

With nearly four-decades of volunteering, Treacy Plunkett was recently recognised for her dedication and service to the St Vincent de Paul Society, receiving a Lifetime Service Award. Treacy has been helping-out in the Warren Vinnies opportunity shop, for a total of 37 years, with St Vincent de Paul Society, NSW, Chief Executive Officer, Yolanda Saiz, thanking Treacy for her tireless service.

“The achievement was reflective of Treacy’s commitment to the Mission, Vision and Values of our Society in serving the Warren community and is a source of inspiration to us all,” Ms Saiz said in a letter acknowledging Treacy’s work for the Catholic not-for-profit. “Congratulations on your tremendous achievement, and thank-you for your dedication in your service and leadership within the Society,” she added.

Councils count cost of increased emergency services levy

By ANDREW TARRY THE NSW government have announced a controversial change to the Emergency Services Levy (ESL) that all councils across NSW are required to contribute towards.

The announcement was met with opposition from councils and the local government industry body from the day of its release and continues to still be of great concern as the impacts of the decision are understood and digested.

Under the Emergency Services Act 2017 councils are required to contribute funds to support the work of emergency services in NSW. Revenue NSW—the department that collects these funds—also collects payments from insurance companies and foreign insured policy holders as part of the levy.

In the past the NSW government has subsidised the collection from councils. For the upcoming 2023/24 the NSW government has decided to scrap the ESL subsidy.

In the mayoral minutes of the Warren council’s May business paper, the mayor Milton Quigley called upon councillors to support representations to the NSW Government in response to the decision. In the minutes the mayor described the levy as the following: “The ESL is a cost imposed on councils and insurance pol-

icy holders to fund the emergency services budget in NSW. The majority is paid as part of insurance premiums, with a further 11.7 per cent funded by councils and 14.6 per cent by the NSW Government. The ESL represents cost shifting at its worse, as it is imposed on councils without any mechanism for councils to recover costs.”

In the report by the mayor, he continues to argue that the “total cost imposed on the local government sector is increasing from $143 million in the current fi nancial year to $219 million next year. This represents a 53.1 per cent increase, completely dwarfi ng the IPART baseline rate peg of 3.7 per cent for 2023/2024.

Fortunately, it is only a minor change for Warren Shire Council’s budget.”

The president for Local Government of NSW (LGNSW), the industry body representing NSW councils, released an official statement soon after the announcement arguing that “this decision will have a catastrophic impact on council budgets, with the ESL contribution by councils totalling somewhere around $77 million.”

The president for LGNSW and the mayor’s report both state that “the decision comes late in the council budgeting cycle and well after the IPART rate peg determination for 2023-24. For some of us, the

Gall has been refused bail and charged with dangerous driving occasioning in death, and negligent driving occasioning in death. Further charges are expected.

The two-vehicle collision occurred between 4.45pm and 5pm on the Friday with Gall alleged to have recorded 0.274 blood alcohol in a roadside breath-test after the accident.

The president continued by outlining the changes some councils are coming to terms with. Some local governments like “Hay Shire Council, will immediately lose 88.6 per cent of its approved rate rise to the ESL, while Bourke Shire Council will lose 94 per cent, Yass Valley Council will lose 96 per cent, and Tenterfield will lose 119 per cent. Hornsby council will lose about 75 per cent of its approved rate rise.”

Additional charges laid against murder accused A LOCAL man accused of murdering Joel Carter at his farm at Miandetta earlier this year, has had three additional charges laid against him.

Clinton Beau Wrigley, 39, of Warren was, last Thursday, also charged with stealing a motor vehicle; causing more than $15,000 worth of damages to a property by a fi re; and larceny. He had previously been charged on Tuesday, March 28, with the murder of Mr Carter, 59, in January.

According to Police, emergency services had attended Mr Carter’s property at 7.45am on Wednesday, January 25, after concerns for his welfare with police then locating the body of Mr Carter inside the property.

Wrigley will next appear in court on Thursday, July 20.

The Mayoral Minute has similar requests and is planning to put the requests forward, along with its support for other councils severely affected by the NSW government’s decision, to the NSW government. The minutes recommend “that council call on the NSW Government to take immediate action to: a. Restore the ESL subsidy. b. Decouple the ESL from the rate peg to enable Councils to recover the full cost; and c. Develop a fairer, more transparent, and fi nancially sustainable method of funding critically important emergency services.

The Mayoral Minute also recommends that the council should write to IPART advising of the fi nancial sustainability impacts of the ESL. And in the recommendations to the council the mayor states “that as a consequence of the unannounced 73 per cent increase in the State Emergency Service budget and an 18 per cent increase in the Fire and Rescue NSW budget, many councils 3.5 per cent rate increase to provide essential community services and infrastructure will have been significantly eroded.” While also, “advising that the Government’s decision may/will lead to a reduction in important local services and/or the cancellation of necessary infrastructure projects.”

Finally, the mayor recommends that the council “writes to the chair of the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) advising that council’s forced emergency services contribution is manifestly disproportionate to the 2023/2024 rate cap, which has resulted in additional fi nancial stress.”

In a response to the backlash from councils a state government spokesperson disputed claims emergency services funding was a state government responsibility.

“Emergency services agencies have long been funded through the cost sharing arrangement,” they said, in a statement.

“The contributions made by local councils to emergency services are determined through legislative requirements.

“These legislative requirements have not changed.”

The spokesperson said the subsidy was approved by the former government and the new government “did not have the time to engage with the process without jeopardising the funding arrangements for emergency services”.

“The NSW government recognises that councils are facing increased cost pressures and is focused on ensuring the sustainability of the local government sector.”

Warren council to move ahead on replacing bridges

By ANDREW TARRY WARREN Shire Council have resolved to continue the process of acquiring land ahead of the replacement of the Marthaguy (Tenandra) and Newe Park (Merrigal) bridges.

A report in the council’s April business paper seeks “council’s resolution to authorise compulsory acquisition of portions of land for purposes of realigning Marthaguy Bridge and its approach sections of Warren Road”.

To fund the two projects the council has received grant funding from two separate state and federal programs.

So far, the council has been given $3,883,200 under the Federal Bridges Renewal Program and $1,126,800 from the state initiative Fixing Country Roads.

According to a media release form the minister of regional development, local government, and territories the purpose of the funding awarded to the Warren council as part of the Bridges Renewal Program is to “design and replace the two-lane Newe Park and Marthaguy Creek bridges on Warren Road with modern and wider two-lane structures. Includes upgrading the approaches to both bridges to improve alignment”.

The Marthaguy bridge is located on

Warren Road and in the report in the council business paper “its current location presents road safety challenges. It is therefore intended that the new bridge be constructed approximately 10 metres north of the existing bridge.”

The costs involved in this project have been “reasonably allowed for in the grant funding estimate” and it doesn’t appear the council will have to provide any fi nancial contribution out of the shire’s budget.

There are some legal implications of the projects as the council must contend with different stakeholders and parties involved in the acquisition process. Some of these include Native Title, Aboriginal land claims, and the travelling stock route overseen by Local Land Services.

The council have already undergone and completed other stages such as the recent application for a temporary occupation license has been submitted to NSW Crown Lands.

If the application is successful it would permit “construction of the bridge while the acquisition process is followed” and will allow the construction of the bridges to be uninhibited or delayed.

There are still many more stages of these projects to work through as they continue to progress.

Lands Service Field Day draws 50 on compulsory sheep-tagging eID

MANDATORY tagging of sheep and goats is an issue of concern to many primary producers in the region, with the Central West Local Land Services (LLS) recently hosting a Field Day in Warren last week on the subject.

The event was designed to bring-together experts, current local users of eID, and suppliers of the latest technology and equipment, so as to help producers prepare for the compulsory implementation of eID in sheep in 2025.

Highlighting the level of interest in the thorny issue, almost 50 local producers attended the event at the Racecourse on Wednesday to help gain an understanding of electronic identification and how they can best utilise the data the tags collect to improve their enterprises.

LLS Central West Team Leader for Sustainable Agriculture, Neroli Brennan, said that Warren was chosen as one of only two locations to hold the events, because they recognise the importance of sheep producers in Warren and the surrounding areas.

“Today has really been about explaining to people what is happening with the mandatory implementation of eID, and focus on how we can improve what we’re doing on-farm and use eID to build efficiency in our businesses,” Ms Brennan said.

“It was as much about giving people the opportunity to come-together with their peers and those that are already using the technology, to discuss how useful they fi nd it (eID), as well as bringing together businesses and suppliers that producers can buy the products from or connect with those who offer outsourcing services,” she added.

The event also included presentations from the NSW Department of Primary Industries Director of Sheep & Goat Traceability, Kiowa Fenner, on the key details of eID implementation; Sally Martin of Sheep Metrix, on the practicalities of eID

for the commercial breeder; and Mark Mortimer of Centre Plus Merinos, who spoke about setting goals and practical uses of the eID data.

Matt Jones from the LLS, also led a panel of local producers including Jack Brennan, Jenny Bradley, and Richie Steel, discussing and answering questions about the practicalities of the technology, offering advice and personal experiences on the implementation, and the uses of the tags.

All three panellists agreed that, although it is soon to be mandatory, if you are going to spend the money on the technology, you should be utilising it to get good returns on your investment.

For example, during the most-recent drought, data from tags could be used to work-out average daily growth, and then that information could be used to make decisions about feeding and selling of poor-performing stock.

The Field Day also included displays and trade stands from Nutrien Livestock, Delta Ag, Coopers Animal Health, Te Pari, Stock Pro, eartags.com.au, and Gallagher.

From all accounts, the day was deemed to be extremely useful by all who attended. Glen Fisk from Nevertire said it was a great day out, and some of the information and experiences offered by the speakers and the local panellists, was invaluable.

“To hear how others are using the technology to their advantage is really very useful,” he added.

Ms Brennan said that, although they understand there are many in the industry who are apprehensive and concerned about the mandate, the LLS is here to assist people in the transition.

“Reach out, keep in touch and we can help, but know that the ability to improve productivity (from eID) is really important,” she concluded.

Warren’s new “The WAM” — free entry for MuseumWeek!

To help celebrate International MuseumWeek, the freshly minted Warren Museum and Art Gallery (“The WAM”) is offering free entry from Monday, June 5 through to Sunday, June 11 inclusive.

The WAM is a not-for-profit facility that receives absolutely no funding from government or council for their operations or staffing, and usually charge an entry fee, relying on volunteers to ensure the doors stay open.

MuseumWeek is an annual event that takes place on social media, with the goal of promoting museums and cultural institutions around the world.

During MuseumWeek, museums and cultural institutions in general share content on their favourite social media platforms and organise special events in their venues.

The WAM is now home for many of the unique historical and heritage objects from Warren’s rich past and help tell the stories that make up our history.

A unique space: Warren’s new Museum and Art Gallery, “The WAM”, has free entry for next week, from June 5–11, to help celebrate International Museum Week.

Central to the museum, is the theme of the Macquarie River – Wambuul, as it has always been so significant to all life in this area.

Acknowledging this, is also the reason that the museum is

also known as The WAM, with design elements reflecting the river, including an installation that winds its way through the heart of the building, alongside displays that tell of life in this area.

Phil Leman from the Warren Museum and Art Gallery explained that MuseumWeek is a great opportunity for locals who have not yet had the chance to experience The WAM and its re-

stored 123-year-old heritage building, for themselves.

“We are still in the very early days of the Museum, having only opened in March, but we are so thrilled with how spectacular the space is,” Phil enthused.

“The place is very much a work in progress. We hope to continue to build on the items on display and grow the stories behind them for many, many years to come,” he added.

The exhibition spaces are also a central component of the whole experience, he explained.

“Our gallery is also home to a variety of art presentations, from local children right through to professional artists.

“We’ve recently held an exhibition of Judy and Joe Shalhoub from Gilgandra and hope to have many more local and travelling exhibitions,” he said.

The week, he said, is the perfect chance to get your fi rst look at this great new local utility.

“Please come along and see this wonderful space during MuseumWeek, while entry is free,” Phil concluded.

WITH the excitement of the annual Warren Show on this Saturday, June 3, the Pastoral & Agricultural Association have announced the winners of their annual colouring competition.

“We had lots of wonderful entries this year,” Karene Cosgrove from the Warren P&A said.

“All the winner’s colourings will be on display in the Pavilion along with lots of other lovely creative endeavours to see including literacy, art, photography, school displays, produce, cooking and flowers,” she added.

Preschool winners were: Ava Andrews (fi rst); Eliza Bell (second); and Lachlan Stephens (third).

Winners in the Kindergarten section were Ivy Davis Brouff, Edward Robertson, and Janda Darcy while, Eponine Lance, Lillian Mackay, and Lilah McPherson, were the winners for Years One and Two. Years Three and Four winners were Amelia Williams, Adalyn McAlary, and Lizzie Murphy, while the winners from Years Five and Six were Jayla Cobcroft, Winnie O’Brien, and Natasha Wilde.

By HARRIET GILMORE MORE than 50 locals showed their community spirit by attending the Palliative Care Support Group’s annual “Biggest Morning Tea” event held last Thursday.

Hosted in the garden of Patti Plunkett who has been holding this event “for years”, it raised money for the Cancer Council and Warren’s Palliative Care Support Group.

Many locals and local businesses enjoyed the sunshine at the Tea with a wide array of home-made treats and tea and coffee in Patti’s backyard.

Attendees included Warren Mayor, Councillor Milton Quigley and other Warren Shire councillors, who paused their monthly general meeting, to come along to the event.

Year Six students from St Mary’s Primary School were also on hand to perform a beautiful rendition of their school song, be-

fore keeping guests thoroughly entertained with a poem to be performed at the upcoming Dubbo Eisteddfod.

The Palliative Care Support Group, also hand-delivered morning tea to a total of nine businesses around town, including Three Rivers, IGA, WRL, and the Chemist shop.

A total of $1400 was raised at the event for the Cancer Council with Cr Quigley the winner of the lucky door prize and Noel Kinsey winning the raffle.

President of the Palliative Care Support Group, Mary-Anne Brennan, said she wanted to offer a huge “thank-you” to Patti and the rest of the volunteer group for their help and generous support, and also to all of the community for their help in raising money and coming along to the event.

“It was a wonderful day with so many generous donations. What a fantastic community we have,” Mary-Anne enthused.

Last week in Canberra, I had the opportunity to make a speech on the hypocrisy of big corporations, the Labor Government, and the Greens when it comes to the Voice to Parliament.

Their actions do not match their words, when they speak of empowering Aboriginal people while, at the same time, ripping opportunities and vital services out of the areas in which they live.

Many of my constituents are Aboriginal people and I will do all I can to support them.

I have great respect for many Aboriginal leaders in our communities who are doing a tremendous job.

I am in favour of constitutional recognition, but I do not see this Voice translating to measurable positive outcomes for people in my electorate.

G’day folks, IT has been a busy couple of weeks, both out in the electorate and in parliament, and it should be another busy one this week as the second of two consecutive weeks of sitting days. The government is still showing Barwon a lot of attention, with a visit from the health minister the week before last, some useful meetings in parliament and plans for other ministers to head out in the near future. It puts me in a good position to advocate for Barwon and the rest of regional NSW.

NATIONAL Reconciliation Week runs from May 27 to June 3, and is an opportunity to reflect, remember, and learn. May 26 was also National Sorry Day, when we acknowledge the suffering experienced by the Stolen Generations.

I was in my fi rst week in Parliament, when Kevin Rudd gave the National Apology to the Stolen Generations in 2008, and I know this meant a great deal to many Aboriginal people.

As the Member of Parliament representing the electorate with the second-highest percentage of Aboriginal people in Australia, I have and will continue to work towards reconciliation by supporting local leaders in the communities I represent.

Their strength and resilience is the reason that I do see a bright future for Aboriginal people in this country, though there remains challenges to overcome.

Infrastructure at risk under Labor THE grief that the Minister for Infrastructure has caused by putting a cloud over infrastructure projects in regional ence for the inquiry into the mass death of fish in the Darling River that happened at Menindee in March this year. The water minister Rose Jackson, environment minister Penny Sharpe and the chief scientist Hugh Durrant Whyte held a press conference at which they stressed the need for the inquiry to be truly independent and also emphasised the need for community consultation, that they need to listen to those with indepth local knowledge of the river.

These are both things that I have been advocating for since the event occurred, particularly the importance of community input. I will be watching closely for the outcome of that inquiry.

Not surprisingly quite a few people have their doubts about electric cars, but as this technology continues to evolve,

Uncertainty on project needs to end: workers on the Inland Rail Narrabri to North Star section in 2021.

NSW and, especially the Inland Rail, is a disgrace.

Farmers, local councils, private businesses, hundreds of contractors, and entire communities who have invested in the Inland Rail, are waiting for the Minister to make the future of this project clear.

Inland Australia relies on good, safe, effective infrastructure, and to leave our people in such a state of uncervehicle range improves. It’s still got a way to go, especially for people who need to travel a long distance in a day, and between charges. But back in 1900 when the fi rst cars with internal combustion engines were hitting the roads in Australia, people here were also skeptical because there were no petrol stations outside large cities and people could only buy petrol in cans from grocers, blacksmiths, chemists, and hardware stores. If people wanted to travel long distances to the outback they had to either take a huge supply of fuel or hope that someone had stockpiled some.

But within a few short years as more people bought petrol powered cars, service stations began to spring up everywhere, with the fi rst petrol bowsers being installed in 1914. It inspired people to invest in petrol stations out in remote parts of the state, effectively creating the infrastructure that extended the range of motor vehicles.

Saluting Their Service IT was my privilege to present Vietnam Veteran, Geoffrey Stanford, with a “Saluting Their Service” Certificate of Appreciation last week, thanking him for his service to our country.

Geoffrey bravely served on that can be charged more quickly and travel further on a charge.

In the short term it encourages tourism from people in EVs and allows locals who can get through a day on a charge to use the technology. I don’t drive an EV but I can see how for some people it makes sense.

Winging it Down the Castlereagh ON May 20 I had the sky-high privilege of dropping the flag to kick off the air rally at the Arthur Butler Memorial Airstrip, Tooraweenah.

People had travelled from as far as Bendigo and Queensland for the event, but there were also plenty of locals from western communities too.

There were around 400 people who attended, with a lot of displays, stalls and food options too. It was a great day for Tooraweenah. The Mountain View Hotel Tooraweenah was pumping when we dropped in.

The air rally, known as “Winging it down the Castlereagh”, involved flying a set course and seeing how close you could get to an estimated

combat operations in South Vietnam as a member of the Royal Australian Infantry Corps in the Second Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment.

He also received a certificate on behalf of his brother Gregory Stanford, who was killed in action at the age of 22 as he was also serving in the Royal Australian Infantry Corps in South Vietnam. fl ight time.

This was a great day out for locals and visitors. I look forward to future events.

Community recognition statements LAST week in Parliament I recognised the Walgett Multi-Purpose Health Service’s nursing team with a Community Recognition Statement (CRS). The team had won the award for Team of the Year at the 2023 Nursing and Midwifery Awards, as part of the celebrations for International Nurses Day on May 12.

Renowned for their supportive team environment, the Walgett nurses have shown extraordinary commitment to continued education, collaborative communication, individualising the needs of their clients and assisting people to be proactive at home to reduce hospital presentations, taking the strain off our medical centres. This is a well-deserved award for this fantastic team!

This is an opportunity to provide a small token of appreciation to the many, many wonderful people in our communities who serve, accomplish, achieve, and make our communities the great places they are. These CRSs are entered into Hansard and NSW history forever, I’d like your help to make sure we honour and recognise those who are the everyday bright stars of your communities. If you know someone who you would like to be recognised for their service, commitment, volunteering, academic, sport or work achievements or any other ways they contribute to your community, I want to know about it!

Health minister Ryan Park in Barwon THE health minister Ryan Park visited Barwon the week before last to see first hand some of the medical facilities in the electorate.

His fi rst stop was Gilgandra Multi-Purpose Service (MPS), where he saw some of the great work they are doing, but also listened to stories about some of the challenges they are facing, particularly the difficulties with fi nding enough staff. We then travelled to Coonamble Aboriginal Health Service.

The next day we went to Walgett where he visited Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service, Walgett MPS before making a surprise trip to Collarenebri MPS. Again he saw how these services function and spent time listening to staff, community members and other stakeholders talk about some of the programs they are running and some of the issues they face both in the medical centres and in the wider community. The minister was keenly interested in learning all he can about health services in the regions, which will lead to better decisions back in parliament.

While in Walgett the minis-

ter also unveiled the new mobile CT service. Loaded on a large truck, taking relatively few staff to operate, this truck loaded with equipment will move between Walgett, Bourke and Cobar, making up for the lack of a fi xed CT scanner between Dubbo and Broken Hill. Technology like this will help bring a better quality of health care to Barwon.

I expect we’ll see more use of mobile technology like this.

In parliament last week the minister talked about his visit to Barwon, praising the work of the medical centres, saying the government needed to focus “beyond the Blue Mountains, and make sure that our regional rural and remote communities feel they have a strong voice in here, and that their health care and access to health care is as good as anyone’s in the metropolitan [areas] and cities.”

Councils WHILE I was out in the electorate the week before last, I was invited to address the Alliance of Western Councils in Dubbo. Many of the issues we discussed, such as housing, biodiversity offsets, labour shortages, staffing medical and aged care services, water security and funding for roads, were things we were talking about before the elec-

tion, but now the emergency services levy has become a major concern.

These are all things that I have been discussing with the new government. I have also been talking with the government about greater engagement with regional councils.

Many new ministers have indicated a willingness to visit regional areas, which can only help with that higher level of engagement, consultation and understanding.

In parliament last week I met with ministers to discuss some of the challenges facing regional councils and discussed some possible solutions for things such as road repairs, bus routes and the housing crisis.

I also moved a notice of motion highlighting the fact that the Local Government Act doesn’t account for regional councils and their fi nancial situation. They have much smaller rate bases and fewer chances to raise revenue than large metropolitan councils, yet they have larger geographical areas to look after.

Current accounting methods inhibit these councils from maximising service delivery in their communities.

I urged the government to consult with regional councils about this inequity. Despite these circumstances, our bush councils do a fantastic

job for their communities.

Service delivery standards

ONE of my policy priorities for this term is to have the government implement service delivery standards for government services and programs across NSW. This would mean setting defi ned metrics for things such as health services and youth programs, to make them more accountable, to see whether they meet desired outcomes and to identify resourcing problems - whether a service is under-resourced or misusing resources.

I posed a question to the premier in parliament last week asking if he had, as yet, formed any opinion on the adequacy of service delivery in Barwon, across the police, health, education and youth portfolios and whether he saw the need for a deep review to bring service delivery up to an adequate standard.

In his reply he talked about the possibility of setting up a committee looking into service delivery in regional and rural areas and “could think of no fi ner member than the member for Barwon to chair that committee.”

It was encouraging, but we will have to wait for that committee to be established.

‘Rise of the regions’, needs a plan — bush institute CEO tells nation

By DAVID DIXON THE bush is on the move, with a bright future ahead for towns throughout inland Australia, a decade-long study has shown.

Affluential young tree-changers are fleeing our cities for rural communities, a trend that will transform our regional areas, the report showed.

To manage this shift successfully, however, required the development of a cohesive approach to developing our country towns, Regional Australia Institute (RAI) CEO, Liz Ritchie said making a keynote speech to the National Press Club recently.

She used the address to launch the group’s “Big Skills Challenge” report — “a 10year snapshot of regional job vacancies that blows-up the myth that there are no jobs in our regions.”

The COVID-19 lockdowns only sped-up a process that was already being made possible by technological changes, the study showed, she said.

“We are on the frontline of the changing face of industry, work and technology and… of inconceivable liveability challenges in healthcare, housing, and services,” Ms Ritchie said in her address to the national media.

“Most people assume it was the pandemic that caused the ‘rise of the regions’ — but this is not true. RAI research revealed a consistent net movement gain from cities to regions, in the decade to 2016,” she added.

Evidence of this, she said was witnessed by the continuing strong back-to-the-bush trend, despite the pandemic lockdowns ending. ”Today, migration from capital cities to regions, remains 17 per cent higher than pre-COVID levels.

“Towns are changing with great coffee, new co-working spaces, fi rst-class sporting facilities, and amazing cultural offerings,” she said.

But it was the traditional attractions of bush living, as well as convenience and cost, that was driving the trend, she argued.

“Some things haven’t changed, like Saturday footy, country pubs, award-winning pies and, most of all, a strong sense of community.

“Our latest research continues to show, that one in five Australians, are considering a move to the regions… motivated by spiralling cost-of-living pressures; growing congestion, and a desire for more time, more space, and more connection with community,” Ms Ritchie said.

The good news, she added, was that this trend was being led, not by the elderly seeking

“It’s millennials, with young families, who see the greatest potential for career opportunities… a quick calculation of the one in five, tells you that is 3.5 million people, not a small number.

“If this happens, we will see 13 million people living in regional Australia. This would be half the nation, not the third we see today… the pandemic simply ‘super-charged’ a dormant desire,” she said.

The trend she added, is not just good for the regions, but for our country as a whole, by reducing the crippling current cost of new metropolitan infrastructure and congestion.

“Rebalancing population growth towards regional cities, will have valuable net gains for the national economy.

“Even a modest increase in the regional population by 2032, to 11 million people, would deliver a $13.8 billion boost to our GDP.” The benefits, she believes, are not just economic, but in happiness, health, and well-being of our society as a whole.

“We can support the growth of our regions, whilst addressing the rising costs,” she argued.

“We can be a more liveable nation.”

The rise of the regions, how-

ever, won’t happen on its own, with limits already on growth, she said — one of the issues covered in the “Big Skills” report.

“Capacity constraints are slowing things down, just when we need our economy to rally, the demand for regional living at pace wasn’t planned for.

“As a result, a series of ‘pinch-points’ have been exposed in our human capital, housing, childcare and healthcare, education – our ‘soft’ infrastructure.”

To overcome the chronic worker shortages impacting regional Australia in employment areas ranging from doctors, nurses, retail, and childcare, action must be taken, the report found.

Going some way to overcoming these pinch-points, she said, required a whole-of-government approach.

“Firstly, we must have a National Population Plan in this country; we must invest in education and training, whilst focusing on ‘growing from within’, we must consider targeted incentives to fi ll chronic shortages in a place-based way,” she said.

“We must continue to promote the regions through the ‘Move to More’ campaign, and others, we must focus on housing and liveability, we must tailor our migration system to

fi ll roles in our regions,” Ms Ritchie added.

Special guest at the address, she revealed, were two recent immigrants who had made a great contribution to our regions.

“Here today we welcome Anil and Ruju, who migrated to Australia from Nepal. They fi rstly made their life in Temora, and now Singleton – working in their chosen field of engineer and dentistry.

“We need more success stories like this,” she added.

Despite the housing shortage being identified as a bigcity problem, the regions were suffering equally or more, she said.

“We pay more attention to the housing markets in the cities than in the regions; despite greater changes in the regional markets.

“From 2020 to 2022, the average house price in regional Australia rose 42 per cent; for every regional place, which saw a 20 per cent price rise, somewhere else, saw a 60 per cent increase.”

Childcare places, education, rental properties, health, in all these, services and outcomes were far-lower in regional, than metropolitan areas, a failure of planning, she believes.

“The current mental models for economic and decision making are outdated, en-

trenched and not serving us… the current state of regional Australia, is a result of generations of geographical bias and misunderstanding.”

“Regional issues have not been prioritised in the minds of those who have the power to change the future… as regional kids, we were encouraged to leave the country because, if you were going to make it in life, you needed to leave.”

Flexible, creative, and innovative solutions were now needed to move the regions from a policy “blind-spot,” she said.

“Regional Australia is different, and it requires a different response… at the RAI, we look at the ‘light and shade’ of regional Australia, and we see a huge number of solutions.

“If we are willing to shift our gaze to our regions, we will see solutions emerging; we need to stop dealing with regional issues as a single government department’s problem or budget line item,” Ms Ritchie said.

Piece-meal solutions, she believes, are not the answer to the growing problems facing the bush: “Stop thinking this is a local government’s issue to fi x by applying for a one-off grant.

“Fragmented approaches and ‘silos’ have all contributed to the challenge we experience today… regional Australia needs to be treated as the significant part of our population and economy that it is!”

She said that developing a cohesive approach to the issues facing our regional towns and country communities, was the ambition of the RAI’s “Regionalisation Ambition 2032 — a framework to rebalance the nation” report launched last year.

“Since the inception of the RAI, we have worked with over 40 different State and Federal ministers holding office in a portfolio of Regional Development.

“We need decision-makers our prime minister, our treasurer, ministers, premiers, chairs, CEOs, and community leaders to understand — this needs your commitment.”

“A long-term strategy for regional Australia, was the key to its future, she added.

“After 10 years of research and engagement — it has become clear, we needed to develop a plan for regional Australia’s future.

“The plan needed to be longterm to allow people to implement long-term thinking.

The plan needed to acknowledge that many of the issues in regional Australia are interlinked.

“I hope my message is clear — we need a mindset shift… it’s time to rebalance the nation,” Ms Ritchie concluded.

VIEW Club, learning about the busy business of bees!

GUEST speaker at Warren VIEW Club’s May 2023 on Wednesday the 24th, was on the fascinating subject of life as a bee-keeper.

Firstly, it was a rather-frosty morning which later morphed into a glorious, sunny day — an ideal time to be out-andabout in your winter woollies.

Thanks, as always, go to the Warren Services Club for their delicious menu; with the sticky date pudding and icecream, still a winner.

In agenda news, Judy Williamson was presented with her 20-years’ service badge by President, Lorraine Falkiner Smith, with congratulations going to Judy. Well done!

Warren VIEW Club also sent their sincere condolences to Sally Waters on the death of her husband, Les. The Club’s sympathy and thoughts are with Sally and her family at this sad time.

As mentioned, the guest speaker this month Maria Kinsey, discussed her life of bee-keeping. It all started for Maria back in the late 1960’s when her husband, Sid, together with his mate, Barry Downton, decided it would be fun to rob some honey from the wild-bees in the trees

around Nevertire!

Of course, there was not a thought of protective headgear, gloves, or goggles — probably just stubbies and singlet, actually — and the result was some very unhappy bees who went crazy.

The boys sported very swollen hands and eyes, and decided to give this honey thing a miss — fortunately, they were not allergic to bee stings!

However, Sid obviously now had “a bee in his bonnet” as, during the 1980’s, he approached Dubbo’s Agriculture Department research station, and was informed he could easily set-up a bee colony in a box. From then on, it’s been a continual learning experience for Sid and Maria, as they work together as a team to manage their bees and the production of honey and wax.

It is believed that bee-keeping as an industry had begun by at least 30BC — the Roman poet Virgil wrote a poem, “Life of Bees”, in which he describes the workings of a beehive. Bees supplied us with one of the fi rst natural sweeteners, plus versatile medicines, and the residents of the hive have provided us with endless fascination, as well as

valuable lessons. Businessmen have drawn inspiration from the bee’s division of labour to develop management practices, and the construction of the bee’s hexagonal honeycomb home has taught architects about the principles of design.

There are more than 20,000 species of bees worldwide.

However, the main species of honeybee humans use commercially, is the European Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera).

So productive is this bee, that it has been introduced around the world to make honey and pollinate crops.

This species live in colonies with populations in the tens of thousands and use wax secreted from their wax glands on the underside of their abdomen to build their complex hexagonal honeycomb in the nests.

The hive contains three types of bees — the Queen Bee, whose sole role is to lay eggs, reaching up to 2000 daily at her peak — a colony cannot survive without the Queen Bee. The Workers are female bees whose job is to look-after the health and wellbeing of the colony, and, lastly comes the the Male Bee, the drone, whose main role is to mate with the

Queen Bee. The female workers are indeed “busy bees”, as they are kept on their toes (do bees have toes) fulfi lling their domestic duties.

They are the hive cleaners, the architects who build and repair, the hive, ventilators who keep things cool, the undertakers who remove dead bees from the nest and, finally, the foragers who go-out every day to seek nectar and pollen.

These foragers are out every day in summer during daylight hours, and don’t return to their hive until the approach of dark — hopefully they then sit back and relax and have a wine or something.

It certainly is a busy life, but, sadly, somewhat short.

Worker bees that are born in spring/summer, may die within six or seven weeks. Those born in winter, however, do have a longer life-span.

Sid is often called upon, during spring and summer, to remove swarms of bees from local backyard gardens, homes, and wool sheds.

Maria told of a recent experience when a swarm of bees attached itself to a bottle brush tree branch in the backyard of their home.

Sid was away, so Maria

had to tackle this job herself, which she did by placing a box under the branch and cutting the branch off the tree, which dislodged the bee swarm and, as Maria said, “thankfully, they settled into the box”.

You’re very brave, Maria!

VIEW Club thanks to Maria for her most interesting talk which drew a lot of questions from the audience.

The Kinsey’s honey is now sold locally and through parts of Western NSW, south-east, and west Queensland. It is sold mostly through family and local businesses, and Maria ended her talk by saying that, once the Kinsey’s Nevertire Honey has been tasted, their clients don’t like to buy anything else — high praise indeed!

Next meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 21, so we look forward to seeing you all again then.

Guest speaker will be an eye health specialist whose expertise is in “eye-care for the elderly” — yep, that’s us now ladies!

The display table will feature something commencing with the letter “E” — for eyes, of course!

St Mary’s helps celebrate Catholic Schools’ Week

St Mary’s Primary School Year Six students celebrate Liturgy for the “Feast Day of Our Lady Help of Christians”.

CATHOLIC Schools Week is all about getting out and about in our community and spreading the “Good News” of the Bible.

St Mary’s Catholic School Year Six children did just that last week, as they met with locals and performed at Mrs Plunkett’s “Biggest Morning Tea”, with the school very proud of the students’ efforts!

(PS. “We found ALL the fairies in Mrs Plunkett’s garden!”)

Another big day during Catholic Schools Week, was the Year Six class celebrating a beautiful Liturgy for the “Feast Day of Our Lady Help of Christians”.

The students also heard about the battle between the soldiers and sailors … such an interesting story!

Parents were also invited to “an unforgettable celebration of talent and creativity” at the St Mary’s Eisteddfod held on

Mary’s Primary School students, Louis Welsh, Rowena McKay, and Jemima McKay, with their winning certificates after the CWA Public Speaking Competition in Narromine last month.

Year Six students at St Mary’s Primary School enjoy morning tea with Mrs Plunkett after performing for guests at her “Biggest Morning Tea” fund-raising event.

Spectators were able to immerse themselves in an afternoon fi lled with captivating performances, inspiring recitations, and breath-taking displays of artistic expression.

Whether a participant or an enthusiastic audience member, the event was an absolute delight with the talented pupils having worked tirelessly to showcase their skills in various categories including mu-

sic, dance, drama, poetry, and more.

Congratulations also wentout to students competing in the CWA Public Speaking Competition at Narromine in mid-May. St Mary’s teachers were very impressed by the students’ ability to get-up in front of large crowds and present a topic with enthusiasm, understanding, and poise.

Congratulations went to

Louis Welsh for winning fi rst place; Rowena McKay for her second, (both in Stage Two); and Jemima McKay for her second in Stage Three.

These students will now move onto the next round of the competition, to be held in Trundle on Monday, June 19.

Sport WRL Engineering Golf Trophy Day; a great event all round!

A TOTAL of 40 golfers recently took to the course at Warren Golf Club in the WRL Engineering Trophy Day, Two-Person Ambrose, which also doubled as the Keno Let’s Play Ambrose qualifying event.

Thanks went-out to both Warren and Jane from WRL, for their generous sponsorship of this event.

In tough conditions, the winners on the day with a great score of 601/4 ; were “Pappy” Fitzgerald and Joey Walker; in second place on 641/2 ; were Dennis and Wayne Wilson; with Warren Lefebvre and Brett Williamson in third on 651/2.

NTPs (nearest-the-pins) went to Joey Walker on the fourth; Warren Lefebvre on the 13th (“the money hole”); Dean Leach on the 16th; and Dennis Wilson on the 18th.

In the end, it was a great day all-round for everyone involved!

Fletcher’s success leads St Johns Gold just good-enough, to national League to defeat Warren Bulldogs sides Championships in Brisbane

Success in one of the toughest of sports, Fletcher Hunt is congratulated on his selection in the NSW CHS 18s Rugby League team, by convener Tim Wykes. PHOTO: SUPPLIED. RUGBY league is one of the toughest of sports, with local lad, Fletcher Hunt, proving himself in the best of company.

Fletcher was recently selected in the elite NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) Under 18s Rugby League team, after representing “Western” at selection trials over three days in Wollongong last week.

With more than 100 young footballers competing for six teams, including Western, Sydney Gold, Sydney Red, Southern, North-

ern, and Presidents, Fletcher has now been selected in the NSW squad to play at the Australian Championships in Redcliffe, Brisbane, in July.

To gain selection in the NSW CHS side is a great honour for Fletcher with the process including several trials over many weeks ago at the Regional Sports Association level.

The national titles are an exciting opportunity for Fletcher, and one which is keenly looking forward to.

Both games were very close, with the

Bulldogs U/12s going down by 16-10, while the U/10s were defeated by only 28-24.

The mini-league teams, the U/6s, U/8s and U/9s, continued to build on their skills in their games against St Johns Gold.

Cobar Miners Race Club Meeting, Saturday May 27 EVERYTHING comes to those who wait… for 36-year-old apprentice, Paul Zerafa, his two wins have been a long-time coming, the latest being on Saturday at Cobar on local galloper, Mr Pointer.

Originally apprenticed at Kembla Grange in 2005, Zerafa rode in trials and, in 2006, spent some time with the Rodney Robb stable at Nyngan.

Later he was seriously injured, and had 16 years away from riding before starting another apprenticeship with Brett Lazzarini at Kembla Grange, with his fi rst winner being at Moruya in 2022 on the Blake Fitzpatrick trained Bracewell.

Local trainer, Wayne Prisk, supplied several mounts for Paul on the weekend at Cobar, and they combined for a dashing win with Mr Pointer in the 1000-metres Lou Simon Memorial Benchmark 58 Handicap.

Crossing quickly from the outside barrier, Mr Pointer (at $3.50) led throughout, for a nearly two-lengths win over Brooklyn Star (Ronald Simpson at $4.60) and Luckyim-

Cobar and Wellington Races withaimee (Will Stanley at $4).

Raced by Butch Eves and Prisk, Mr Pointer — from only five starts since joining the Prisk stable — has recorded three wins and two placings.

Dubbo trainer, Connie Greig, continued her amazing record in feature races at Cobar, when Gossip won the 1700-metres Westrac Cobar Cup. Carrying three bets of between $2400 to $500, Gossip was given a charmed run third on the rails by Ken Dunbar and wore down the leader Beg Me (Jayden Barrie at $15) to score by three-quarters of a length with the Connie Greigtrained 2022 Cup winner, Valadyium ( Will Stanley at $5), a length away third.

At both the Cobar Miners Race Club and Cobar Picnics, Connie Greig has now won a total of six Cup races.

Also at the meet, Gulgong trainer, Dennis Consadine, praised Bathurst-based apprentice, Ashleigh Stanley, for her ride on Frau Holle in the Dr Allan Brady Memorial Benchmark 45 Handicap.

Coming from a long way back, Frau Holle (at $5) swept to a three-lengths win over Sindagar (Ronald Simpson on the $2 favourite) and Shiny Agent (Jayden Barrie at $7).

pkis (at $5.50) home with a strong fi nishing run to beat the leader, Geesheehan (Wendy Peel at $10) and Gunnerside (Dylan Stanley at $4.60) in the 1200-metres Vinny Delaney Memorial Class One Handicap.

Facilities and the general presentation of the racecourse at Cobar, are comparable to prominent TAB clubs and the dirt track was very well-prepared for the meet.

Racing at Dubbo is on Friday; Coonamble Picnics are on Saturday; with Bathurst next Monday.

Wellington Races, Sunday, May 28 JOCKEY Ronald Simpson, gained further recognition for his outstanding ability when riding a winning treble on Sunday at Wellington.

Two of his winners, Notabadidea and Obey, are trained at Dubbo by Clint Lundholm, to whom Simpson is apprenticed, while fellow Dubbo trainer, Dar Lunn, supplied his other winner, Pants On Fire.

Notabadidea, a previous winner for races up to

2400-metres, was kept fresh

by Lundholm and landed good bets when backed in from $9 to $5 for the 1400-metre feature race, the Simmo Signs Benchmark 74 Handicap.

Parked in a handy spot by Ronald Simpson, Notabadidea fi nished best to score in a three-way photo fi nish from Majority (Clayton Gallagher on the $2.50 favourite) and Kateru (Shayleigh Ingelse at $21).

Obey (at $6.50) settled wellback in the 1100-metre Over The Line Racing Country Boosted Benchmark 58 Handicap, before storming home down the outside to win by a half-length from Brogans Creek (Patrick Scorse at $5) and Starane (Tony Cavallo on the $3.20 favourite).

Trained by Dar Lunn for Guy Mitchell from Binnaway and Rob Pratten from Dubbo, Pants On Fire (Ronald Simpson at $5.50) led throughout when beating War Toy (Chelsea Ings at $16) and Vain Rich (Will Stanley at $3) in the 1400-metre Ryan & Rankmore Chartered Accountants Class One Handicap.

Leading senior jockey, Clayton Gallagher was also in good form at the meet, booting home a winning double on Press Forward and Bold Offa.

From the Dubbo stables of Brett Robb, Press Forward (the $1.55 favourite) tracked the leaders to the home-turn before getting to the front and

beating Vanoureuce (Ronald Simpson at $8) and Serifice (Tony Cavallo at $9) in the 1100-metre Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club Country Boosted Maiden Plate.

Opposed to a field of speedsters, the Allan McRae, Yasstrained Bold Offa (at $4.60) led for home and held-off the fast-fi nishing Billabong Isle (Will Stanley at $3.50) with Beauchamp (Hollie Hull at $5) fi lling third place in the 900-metre Jennifer Conn Lawyer & Consultant Benchmark 66 Handicap.

Owned by James Carolan and trained at Dubbo by Garry Lunn, Freycinet (the $2.60 favourite) at the fi rst start since coming from South Australia, had a length of the straight battle with Break Over (Ronald Simpson at $3.50) before winning by a head with Schmacko (Chelsea Ings at $26) third in the 900-metre KFC Wellington Maiden Handicap.

The other winner at Wellington, was the Claire Lever, Hawkesbury-trained Romantic Rock (Kayla Nisbet at $3.60) in the 1400-metre Federal Hotel Maiden Plate.

Racing at Dubbo is on Friday; Coonamble Picnics are on Saturday; with Bathurst next Monday.

Pumas continue their winning from with win over Gular

By HARRY GAYNOR THE Pumas and Pumarettes made the quick journey over to Gulargambone on Saturday. The tricolours brought out a strong crowd of supporters considering they were also hosting their annual show, not to mention the shuddering polar winds gusting across Gulargambone Oval that afternoon.

The Pumarettes were keen to make up for their loss to Walgett.

Once again disadvantaged with a short bench, the Flamin’ Galahs notched fi rst points with an intercept try, yet Pip Storer was quick to reply with a try down the left edge.

Frustration was soon encountered with a referee that struggled to reach consistency upon his defi nition of offside.

Fierce try-line defence from the Pumarettes soon succumbed to cheap tries from Gular off an intercept and a loose ball. Jaz Finch notched her fi rst ever try to open the second half, as Simone Fletcher’s return to the team saw a great combination with Storer to probe both edges of the field, eventually sending Sophie O’Brien over the line.

Yet a late try from Gulargambone sealed the deal for the home team, victorious 25-15. Three points went to Pip Storer, two points to Simone Fletcher, and one point to Jaz Finch.

The Men’s XV were looking to be dominant after a memorable victory last week, and early attacking force from the kick-off saw Harry Goddard open the scoring for the match.

Yet, Gulargambone were not willing to make it seem so easy,

immediately regaining possession and forcing their way down the other end to score through a scrambled Pumas defence.

A number of Pumas players were seemingly still in the headspace of the Ladies Day afterparty, as numerous handling errors and ruck infringements made their fi rst half difficult. Eventually Tom Bruce, Dave Jenkins and Hugh McLean scored tries, yet zero conversions from “tractor-legs” Jenkins saw the halftime score only 20-7.

The Pumas regathered their consistency to complete consecutive plays in the second half. A gallant display of line-breaks, ruck-turnovers and ‘don’t-argue’s’ from skipper William Archer inspiring Warren to fi nally take control of the match.

Archer’s fellow forwards followed suit, breaking through the middle of the field hastily and making way for the zig-zagging speed of Franco Marais, Mac Symons and Paul Arragon each scoring tries.

Gulargambone tasted some late redemption though, as their tighthead prop, who had just encountered a breach of the peace with Warren’s hooker, somehow managed to sidestep fullback Dave Jenkins and glide under the sticks for a consolation try.

The fi nal score: Warren 49-Gulargambone 12. Three points went to Will Archer, two points to Stu McLean, and one point each to Tom Bruce and Dave Jenkins.

Both sides will enjoy two weeks off now with byes and will return to Victoria Oval on Saturday, June 17 to take on the Coonamble Rams for Pumas’ Old Boys Day.

Six courageous teams brave the cold for Barb Appleyard Memorial Trophy Day

SIX courageous teams braved the icy weather last Saturday to battle it out for the Barb Appleyard Memorial Trophy Day, Two-Person Ambrose qualifying event for Keno/NSW Golf.

However, after seeing the prize-table set-up, the golfers were all-the-more keen to get out there and play their best golf.

Wearing our sprigs of lavender, Barb’s favourite, players approached hole one convinc-

ing themselves, it was a beautiful, warm day!

Bringing in a “hot” score of 68.5, and the winners of the day, were Sandy Moore and Alison Payne with second place with a score of 70.5, were Tara Walker and Deb Kentwell.

Other placings included Christine Tilley and Val Soulsby third on 73.75; with fourth spot going to Chris Trudgett and Judy Ridley on

74.25. Next on 79.75, was Trish McAlary and Kaye Martin; while coming-in sixth, was Amanda Thomas and Lyn Rawlinson on 84.

The NTPs (nearest-the-pins) winners were, on the fourth, Alison Payne; on the 13th and 18th, Deb Kentwell; and, on the 16th, Judy Ridley.

Congratulations go out to all the golfers who participated with a huge “thank-you” to the Appleyard family for continu-

ing to sponsor this special day, it means a lot to us as Barb was a very special lady who was loved by all.

It was also great to have most of Barb’s family there to present the winners, thanks Rhonda, Robyn, Clara, Owen, Harry, and Gus. Congratulations also to Paul, Malcolm, and Brian, three of the invaluable volunteers who were made Life Members of the club, and very

well-deserved. too!

Upcoming events include an 18-Hole stableford on Saturday, June 3, and an 18-Hole Strokeplay, and on Sunday, June 4, the Andos Trophy Day, Two-Person Mixed Ambrose qualifying Keno/NSW golf event.
