WARREN LADIES GOLF

Awesome Foursome Championship Handicap winners; Robyn and Tish SOME great golf in the last week included, on Wednesday, a mixed 4BBB played with sponsorship by WRL. Chris Tilley and Bob McKay came-in with a hotscore of just 38 to take home the meat-tray (on a countback) from Kaye Martin and Sandy Moore, also on 38. NTP (nearest-the-pin) winners, were Judy Ridley on the on the 13th and Bob McKay on the 16th; congrats to all place-getters, Also “thank-you” to Warren and Jane for their continued sponsorship; it’s wonderful to have you on board again. On Saturday, the Foursomes Championships were held in beautiful sunny weather that was ideal for 36 holes of golf. First tee-off, however, was at 10am on the damp but pristine course. After the dew had dried, though, the course was our “oyster”, and no excuses or “sorries” were allowed. After a long day, we were

all at the 19th enjoying high tea and waiting patiently for the results to be announced. Captain Kaye welcomed and thanked the golfers, before passing over to Chris to announce the 2023 champions. f A-Grade winners, were Alison Payne and Sandy Moore on 198. f B-Grade winners, were Judy Ridley and Bec McKay on 209. f A-Grade runners-up, on 203, were Kaye Martin and Deb Kentwell. f B-Grade runners-up, on 217, were Barb Laws and Lyn Rawlinson. f Handicap winners, were Robyn Downey and Tish McAlary on 159. Congratulations to all our 2023 Foursome champions. “Try to think where you want to put the ball, not where you don’t want it to go.” — The Dirty Birdie More photos on page 3.

By ANDREW TARRY THE discovery of one’s family history and the joy, delight, and sometimes even sadness that can accompany that discovery, holds an allure that many of us fi nd hard to resist. History can be a peculiar and broad component of people’s lives and can be an integral part of each person’s individual identity. Communities are often built upon shared history and the past is sometimes a complex and difficult place that takes a deft hand to navigate. For some communities the history of a people and their home is especially important. Families can reside for generations in a small region or area and can share relationships that span across decades. The history of an area provides a rich re-

pository of information about a place, what the people have experienced, and ultimately, how they have managed to survive. Early next month, the Warren Shire Library is hosting the popular Family and Local History Workshop. The session is facilitated by Lianne Clark. “Lianne is a passionate family and local history researcher with many years’ experience using family and local history resources,” said the library officer Melissa Irving. The workshop is an opportunity for participants to learn and develop strategies for fi nding information, verifying sources, and getting the most out of online resources. History enthusiasts or even those with a burgeoning curiosity are able to come along to the workshop and ask questions and learn the skills to navigate different databases, records and archives. Lianne will also talk about how DNA testing can be used as a research tool to breakdown any ‘brick walls’ that researchers can sometimes encounter. The workshop will be guided by participates and what they are most keen to fi nd out. Participants will be able to look at some of the National Library of Australia’s resources as well as those available at the local library. “Birth, deaths and marriage dates are always great to fi nd but the depth that newspaper articles and photographs bring to family history can really

Participants are encouraged to bring their own devices so that they can access online databases on the day. Mrs Irving shared her enthusiasm for the event with The Warren Star and said, “we always look forward to this event in the library – you never know what people will fi nd and sometimes the discoveries can be quite exciting and even emotional!” Places are limited for the workshop so, bookings are essential. WARREN STAR Local News for the Warren Shire Wednesday, June 21, 2023

Vale Jimmy Mitchell – ‘the man in black’ February 27, 1941 - May 23, 2023 Contributed JAMES Joseph Mitchell was born on February 27, 1941, in Cobar, the eldest of eight children to parents Adam (Mate) and Ruby Mitchell. His siblings were Donald, Felix, Geoffrey, Norman, Colin, Brian and Jennifer. The family moved to Dunedoo in 1950 and Jim’s commitment to family was evident from an early age. As the right-hand man to his father, he not only adored his mother but also played a significant role in caring for his seven younger siblings. He was known to sell milk and eggs to the school teachers at Dunedoo Central School, carefully carrying them on the bus to ensure their safe arrival. After school, Jim worked with his father on a share-farming basis and this is where he learnt to shear. Apparently, he was a very good shearer, not especially fast but neat and precise, a character trait evident in all aspects of his life. As a young shearer he travelled around the state contracting until September 1963, when he married the Dunedoo police sergeant’s daughter, Barbara Etheridge. Jim and Barb started married life in a caravan while he continued working as a shearer, travelling around from shed to shed, returning every now and then to their base in Dunedoo. In 1965, they made their home in Louth, after Jim was asked by his uncle Shin Mitchell to take over the licence of Shindy’s Inn. Balancing shearing and pub responsibilities was no easy task, but Jim was up for the challenge, and when their daughter Karen was born in 1966 he would shear all day, fulfi ll father responsibilities with her, and then work at the bar until closing time, only to do it all again the next day. One night there was a fight in the pub. One of the locals came off second best, but didn’t want to go through to the doctor in Bourke. Jim stitched his forehead at the bar, but when the patient had a look in the mirror and complained it wasn’t straight, Jim removed the stitches and stitched it again. The next day the patient came back and complained he’d used the wrong coloured cotton. Jim simply replied, “you’d better go through to Bourke next time.” In his spare time, Jim would lend a helping hand to locals, building and fi xing machinery and engineering parts for those in need, tapping into another lifelong interest, mechanics and cars, especially old cars, and most especially T Model Fords. He had an incredible ability to understand the workings of old engines, large pumps, motors - both diesel and electric - and complex safety equipment. People were in awe of Jim’s mechan-

Jimmy Mitchell. PHOTO: SUPPLIED. ical capacity. After around 10 years in Louth, Jim and Barb moved to Warren in 1974, settling in Glen Street. Jim continued shearing and Barb worked at the Club House Hotel. Their neighbours the Cleasby’s and Patterson’s became great friends, and it was through another neighbour, Bob Christenson, that Jim was offered work as channel manager at the Tenandra Irrigation Scheme. By all accounts Jim was good natured with all those he dealt with while working on the Scheme, from irrigators, to suppliers, to staff in the office. He was also very good at sorting equipment problems, and usually reported issues to the

office after he’d already solved them. Everyone enjoyed his company when he breezed in in his trademark black jeans and tee shirt. This may have been when he was fi rst called ‘the man in black’. His V8 Holden ute (also black) was famously loud and well known along the channel route, and there are many accounts of his low level flying trips to check the pumps. He used to insist he didn’t need air conditioning as he was in and out opening so many gates. Not wanting to wait for someone else to service his ute, Jim would buy six oil fi lters and six air fi lters every month and do it himself. One WB ute had 800,000 kms on it when he traded

it in. Back then new Holdens were covered with a 12 month/20,000km warranty, Jimmy ran that WB out of warranty within a matter of weeks. When his utes were traded they were always very sought after as everyone knew how well they’d been maintained. Jim couldn’t swim, yet he worked on the Scheme for 29 years. He was once asked what would happen if he fell in, and he replied “I’ll just make sure I don’t!” Jim was one of the founding members of the ‘Outback Club’, a club formed by a few Model T owners who were tired of attending local car club runs with other more modern cars such as HR Holdens, Toranas

and GT Falcons. These cars obviously travelled much faster than a Model T and Jim and the others would arrive at the designated morning tea spot to fi nd the more modern cars had already had their ‘smoko’ and were on the way to lunch. Forming a club of like-minded people with the same type of old cars that all travelled at the same speed seemed like a logical thing to do. Jim had a beautiful black 1912 roadster but he would avoid dirt roads when on club runs as he was concerned about the dust and having to polish the car for the following day. No one was allowed to see it dirty. He’d often take the longer bitumen route when a dirt short-cut was offered or turn back and meet up later. After some time Jim felt he was missing out on the fun, so he decided to buy a ‘rough’ car that he didn’t have to be so precious about. He bought a 1927 A model which was in fair condition and fit for the task and he fondly referred to it as ‘Barb’s car’, as it was complete with doors and side curtains to keep Barb warm and dry. In true Jim form, he quickly tidied up this car, rebuilt the engine, hotted up the intake and carburettor, and installed disc brakes at the rear. He made that car so pretty that once again he wasn’t happy about the dirt roads, but at least there wasn’t any brass to polish. Jim’s beautiful Barb passed away in 2021 after a protracted illness during which he cared for her for many months at home. A true labour of love was the Warren Services Club, where Jim was on the board for an incredible 32 years, 19 as president. He loved to run the Friday night raffles, a job he did every week for years. He would start the draw with a deep voice saying, “Members, welcome to the Friday Night Happy Hour Draw”. Jim invested a lot of time into the club. He would pop in and out several times a day, offering assistance or just for a chat. He adored the club and everyone there adored him, he could talk and relate to every demographic of the community. He also had jobs that he loved to do like taking the cardboard to the tip, engineering gadgets to make life easier for staff, and fi lling the ice buckets. He had a remarkable relationship with everyone, from cleaners to chefs, bar staff, members and office staff, who all remember him clapping his hands together and saying, “Anything I can do to help?”

Jim/Jimmy Mitchell – proud, reliable, trustworthy, honest, dependable, consistent, open, resilient, steadfast, immaculate, precise. A straight shooter. May you rest in peace.

Local motor dealers to receive Warren council as a customer By ANDREW TARRY IN a move which will continue to benefit all local motor dealers and not just preference one provider, the council have approved the practice of utilising all local motor dealers in Warren shire as their preferred vehicle supplier. The motion was approved in the May council meeting and will run for the next two years until June 30, 2025. The practice is an extension of the previous policy and is supported by a resolution from the council meeting on May 27, 2021, which states “that all local motor vehicle dealers be formally appointed as the preferred supplier/s of small motor vehicles including sedans (cars), SUV’s (Sport Utility Vehicle’s) and utilities for

the Warren Shire Council for an additional two-year period ending 30th June 2023 in accordance with the Approved Government Discount”. The resolution refers to the council’s “small vehicle fleet which is made up of sedans (cars), SUVs (sport utility vehicles) and utilities only.” The majority of shire councils across NSW have a similar policy which promotes the use of local suppliers for vehicles. This arrangement is seen as mutually beneficial for all stakeholders with some councils being the largest costumer of the vehicle supplier in that area. The suppliers also view local governments as reliable and important costumers. The resolution also allows the council to buy “classes of vehicles and be subject to

the approved government discount”. This discount is available for most makes of vehicles and has “the effect of minimising the opportunity of dealer discounts and/pr bargaining” according to the report in the council’s May business paper. The report also notes that the last two years of using this practice - sourcing vehicles from local suppliers - has been successful “as it has saved monies and staff time by acquiring parts and backup service locally”. The council has a procurement and disposal policy which it adherers to in matters regarding the requisition and procurement of goods and services. The objectives of this policy are as follows: f “Obtain value for money when evaluating, selecting,

and disposing of goods and services that are paid for with public funds. f Ensure essential accounting and control procedures are followed for the process of requisition, ordering, receipt, issue, return and disposal of all goods and services. f Provide a set of basic ‘Procurement and Disposal Guidelines’ for the purchase and disposal of goods and services including local preference provisions. f Promote purchasing practices which protect the health and safety of council officers and contractors. f Ensure goods purchased by council meet relevant safety standards. f Ensure that all parties involved in the procurement process at Warren Shire Coun-

cil comply with relevant legislation, regulations, and industry standards. f Promote purchasing practices which conserve resources, save energy, minimise waste, protect human health and maintain environmental quality and safety. f Behave with impartiality, fairness, independence, openness, integrity, and professionalism.” It is the conclusion of the report that the appointment of all motor vehicle dealers within the Warren shire, “with the status of being the preferred small vehicles supplier does not contravene,” these objects. The extension will be welcomed to local vehicle suppliers as they continue to benefit from the council providing consistent, ongoing business.

Environmental bill a negative for farming communities I GAVE my view last week on the Nature Repair Market Bill 2023, which is designed to create biodiversity credits for landholders in a similar mechanism to energy credits. The speeches from citybased members of parliament on topics like this, who live in completely altered environments, are breathtaking in their naivete. They put the burden of environmental responsibility onto agricultur-

al communities in places like my electorate without any recognition of the fact that farmers actually produce the food, fibre, and resources that they rely on. There are some falsehoods in the philosophy of this bill that I object to, one being that locking up land is good for the environment – it’s not – in fact often the reverse is true. I also fi nd the idea that land used for agricultural purposes degrades the environment to be a falsehood – from personal experience as a farmer, the environment can benefit greatly from good farming practices such as rotational grazing and zero-till farming. I’m opposed to this bill. I’m sorry I have to be, because in its original form as put up by the coalition government it would have been a positive one. Now I’m afraid to say it is potentially dangerous in the longer term for this country, and I no longer will support it. RACING NG ORT REPORT By COLIN HODGES

Walgett, raced Saturday, June 17 ADDING to a very good record on western area tracks, Plectrum won the 1400 metres Geronimo Farm Equipment-New Holland Walgett Cup on Saturday, before a record breaking crowd. The now eight-year-old mare came to Graeme Brooker in 2019 after two wins on north coast tracks and has since won seven races for the Coonabarabran trainer including the last two cups at Walgett (2022 and 2023) and cups at Carinda and Binnaway together with benchmark handicaps at Gilgandra (two) and Walgett in 2021. Orange-based Chelsea Ings has ridden Plectrum for the last six wins, while Nyssa Burrells was aboard for the 2020 win at Gilgandra. Ridden in a clever front running race by Chelsea Ings on Saturday, Plectrum ($4) won the Walgett Cup by a half length from the second place dead heaters Hardyo (Kelsey Lenton, $3.20 equal favourite) and Amazingly (Wendy Peel, $3.50). Jane Clement, who trains

the second placegetters at Armidale, later won the 1600 metres benchmark 50 handicap with Jade (Kelsey Lenton, $5) which tracked the leaders and then fi nished best to beat Royal Samer (Wendy Peel, $7) and Borlotti (Paul Zerafa, $10). The more than 20 Walgett and Collarenebri-based owners of Zoucan Toucan were in celebratory mood when their horse won the 1400 metres JR and ML Moore Memorial Maiden Handicap. Sensei Jackie and Better Than Pearls set the pace before the Kelly Smith, Collarenebri-trained, heavily supported Zoucan Toucan (Ronald Simpson, $2 fav.) coming from last early, ran home strongly to account for Castlehyde (Jake Barrett, $5) and Our City (Andrew Banks, $5). Dubbo-based apprentice Ronald Simpson made it 10 wins over the past 12 days when he won the 900 metres Dubbo City Toyota Maiden Plate (900 metres) on the Cec Hodgson, Coonamble-trained Twyborn Affair. Third to the home turn, Twyborn Affair ($2.20 equal fav.) gained an inside run to beat the other equal favourite Cheerful Union (Chelsea Ings) and Snow Missile (Andrew Banks, $6). Due to medical issues former leading trainer Cec Hodgson stepped away from racing and this was his fi rst winner for several years.

Nyngan trainers Rodney Robb (900 metres Roy White Memorial Benchmark 50 Handicap) and Greg O’Neill (1300 metres Paul Wickman Memorial Handicap) had winners at Walgett. The Robb-trained Hurn Court (Jayden Barrie, $7) from well back fi nished strongly on the outside to win by a neck from Loca (Will Stanley, $8) which reached the lead in the straight, while Sons Of Bourke (Jake Barrett, $4) was a close third. Outback Cod (Andrew Banks, $7) from the O’Neill stable, shared the lead with Geesheehan then raced to an over two lengths win from the Richard Jackson, Walgett trained The Drafter (Ronald Simpson, $3) and Stable Talk (Kelsey Lenton, $4.40).

Safado wins at Coonamble’s Cannonball COONAMBLE, raced Sunday, June 18 CARRYING the South Sydney Rabbitohs Rugby League Club colours, worn by apprentice jockey Madeline Owen and trained by former local Damien Lane, Safado on Sunday won a thrilling Nutrien Ag Solutions Coonamble Cannonball. Against a quality field of sprinters in the 1100 metres feature Sprint, Beauchamp led from Ecker Road, Dalavin and

Dubbo Wanderer with Safado last in the nine horse field. Ecker Road (Shayleigh Ingelse, $26) from the Gilgandra stables of Bryan Dixon Jnr reached the lead close to the fi nish but was beaten a long neck by the fast fi nishing Safado ($8.50) with Toro Toro (Nick Heywood, $11) a short head away third while Beauchamp battled on well for fourth. Now a successful trainer at Wyong, Damien Lane is a staunch supporter of meetings at Coonamble where he commenced his career. Apprenticed to Clint Lundholm at Dubbo, Ronald Simpson continued his current tremendous run of success when he won the 1200 metres Whitewood and Pennell Maiden Handicap on the Lundholm trained Venatic. Owned by the family of Todd Smith the Lundholm racing stables manager, Venatic was backed from $6 to $3.90 favourite and led throughout for a dominant win over Lumin (Kody Nestor, $7) and Awaygoesthebunny (Wendy Peel, $8). Rewarding Belle at debut was at $101 when third to Bare To Witness at Coonamble and returned on Sunday to reverse the result in the 1200 metres Mobil and Moe Jacobs Plumbing Showcase Twoyear-old Handicap. Great rugby, good wins, at Warren versus Coonamble Old Boys’ Day

By HARRY GAYNOR

COONAMBLE Rams made the short-trip down to Victoria Oval on Saturday for an action-packed day of western rugby. Boasting good player numbers this year, Coonamble were able to put up three teams against Warren with a great spectator turn-out for Old Boys’ Day at the club. The Pumarettes took to the field fi rst, eager to tally-up a win after two straight losses. As per usual they came out fi ring, attacking with some quick running up the middle of the field. Eventually, Skipper Kaitlin Staniforth and lightning winger, Sarah Noonan put the pressure on Coonamble’s left-edge, with some excellent ball-movement getting Noonan over the line for the fi rst try. Staniforth quickly followed suit and edged her way over for a try as well. The Pumarettes looked poised to pile plenty more points on, yet some questionable refereeing started to fuel frustration within the Ladies’ side. Eventually, a lapse in concentration allowed Coonamble to run in two quick tries at the start of the second half. The score was level for the remainder of the game until, once again, Staniforth and Fletcher combined some great hands, to send Noonan over in the corner again for the match-winning try. With the fi nal score, 15-10, player points went to three for Noonan; two to Pip Storer, and one to Abby Standing. The Pumas Second Grade then ran-out for the second time this season with plenty of young players eager to prove their worth. Coonamble however strolled through during the opening plays of the game, with the size

Coonamble’s forwards fi nally battered their way through for fi rst points and, not long afterwards, they scored a second try in similar fashion. Warren Captain, Buster Simmons, was, however, relentlessly appealing to his young colleagues to fi re-up in defence, and eventually they started to gain possession. Newcomer Hagan Size, even-

tually hit-back for Warren with a try before half-time. Warren were gaining confidence going into the second stanza and, with their older Rams opponents starting to tire, the momentum changed. A barnstorming run by Hagan was backed-up with a great sequence of champagne rugby, with the ball being thrown across the field through through 10 sets of hands to winger Gus Bryant

who was cruelly denied a try in the corner. The young Pumas were fi red-up, however, and with some experienced direction from five-eight Liam Salmon in the backs sent Matt Kelly over for a try. Shortly afterwards, Hagan Size crossed over for his second, setting-up the Pumas for a memorable comeback victory with the fi nal score, 21-12. The First XV then took

the field looking to shake off the cobwebs after two weeks with no games. Eager to prove their worthy position as ladder-leaders to the onlooking old boys, they hit the front early as centre Dave Jenkins crossed over the line. Shortly after this, lock forward Bill Castleden put forward another try-of-the-year contender, regathering a loose ball from Warren’s kick, busting two tackles, and throwing a dummy to then run 50-metres and score. His fellow lock, Harry Goddard, added his own try shortly afterwards also. Coonamble soon regathered though and made their way down the field to pressure the Puma forwards on the line. Eventually, some lazy defence allowed Coonamble to put their own tall man over for a try. Yet this would be the only points the Rams would taste. Warren dominated the scrummaging throughout the whole match, and senior forward, James Mclean was unyielding charging through the defensive line, time and time again. Warren eventually piled on points well into the second half, with tries going to Joe Hamblin, Hagan Size, Jack Kelly, closing-out with a well-deserved try to winger Samuel Hunt, returning from a fractured shoulder. With the fi nal score at 51-7, Warren sent a fi rm warning shot to their rivals at Nyngan, who they will face next weekend. The glorious day was topped-off with a special presentation of Life Membership to legendary prop Mal Smith, revered by many playing and watching on the day as a great coach, mentor, and friend, within the club.
