Warren’s win as “Australia’s most-colourful public toilet,” a serious issue of privy access! By HARRIET GILMORE IT’S good to be best at something! So it’s great news, that the toilet block at Macquarie Park, was recently awarded as one of Australia’s most-colourful public toilets. While given in a light-hearted manner, the award by the “Continence Foundation of Australia’s annual Great Dunny Hunt”, actually has a very serious purpose, improving access to public facilities in Australian towns. The campaign, which aims to update the lists of the National Public Toilet Map, asked the public to take photographs of their favourite public dunny, as well as any updated public toilet facilities, and to upload them to the National Public Toilet Map (NPTM) website or app. Taken for granted by many, awareness and access to quality public toilets, is a huge consideration for those living with incontinence, who may fi nd it difficult to leave their home for everyday activities due to the fear of not having access to appropriate facilities. Warren’s Town Services Manager, Raymond Burns, said that Council was very proud to take out such a “prestigious” award for the town. “It’s a fantastic campaign,

“The Macquarie Park toilets are one of almost a dozen public art murals around the Shire, and were installed over the past few years to brighten the town up and celebrate life in the Warren re-

gion,” he added. He said that, choosing the correct location of public toilets, is no laughing matter “Being right next to the Cenotaph in Macquarie Park, the decision on what to put on the

loos was an easy one,” he said. “We are so pleased it’s not just locals appreciating the artworks,” he added. The poppy flower artwork of the Macquarie Park facility —a recognised symbol of war memorials — was inspired by its proximity to the Cenotaph with the toilet panels by artist, Bastian Allfrey. Decided on by an expert panel, the Princes Park in Battery Point in Tasmania was also recognised as one of Australia’s most-colourful public toilets with Loop One in Zuytdorp, Western Australia, also receiving an honourable mention for Australia’s public toilet in the quirkiest spot. The country’s top three accessible toilets, were Bundaberg Airport at Kensington, Queensland; Lake Pertobe in Warrnambool, Victoria, and Belair National Park Two in Belair, South Australia. This year’s Hunt attracted more than 778 entries, with 1935 photos and 150 new facilities added, which made judging the winners a massive task. The public was encouraged to upload pictures to go into the running to fi nd the best public Australian toilets until Monday, June 19, the start of “World Continence Week”. Continued page 2

This follows Council recently adopting its Public Arts Committee’s recommendation to include two collage wraps on these facilities depicting historic images of both Warren Shire (for the CBD) and Macquarie River-themed images (for Lion’s Park) in the concept designs for these projects. Perhaps, too, these will be good contenders for the most colourful dunnies in next year’s competition!

Access to unique Marshes; Burrima Boardwalk Road is now completed

The Warren Shire Council completed the 2.6km stretch of access road as a private project for, and funded by the Macquarie Wetlands Association.

The Burrima Boardwalk Access Road seal is officially complete and ready to welcome residents and visitors through the gates to the Macquarie Marshes.

By HARRIET GILMORE BURRIMA Boardwalk Access Road seal is officially complete and ready to welcome both residents and visitors through the gates to the famous Macquarie Marshes. The works were funded through grants sourced by Macquarie Wetlands Association with the contracts carried-out by Warren Shire Council. The project is designed to improve access to the incredible Macquarie Marshes wetlands via the Burrima Boardwork for self-guided visitors. Council said that the essen-

tial infrastructure upgrade, will help to improve accessibility to one of the Shire’s most iconic natural assets and visitor attractions, creating further tourism opportunities for the region. The 2.6km stretch of road was completed as a private project — funded by the Macquarie Wetlands Association — to provide an improved, smooth, and comfortable all-access road. The Association said that they were thrilled to see the work completed and thanked both Council for undertaking the job, and the State Government for the funds.

Warren General Manager, Gary Woodman, said that, completing the project had also provided a great sense of satisfaction for the Shire as a whole. “Council is pleased to have been able to work with the Macquarie Wetlands Association in both the investigation and design of the construction of the Burrima Boardwalk Access Road, for numerous grant applications and, following the eventual grant success, the actual construction works,” Mr Woodman said.. “Congratulations to Roads Overseer, Stephen Smith, and Heavy Plant Operator, Scott

Fitzgerald and Crew, for a most professionally-done and quality project that remained within budget,” he added. The Burrima Boardwalk is located on a privately-owned property offering a unique gateway in the Macquarie Marshes. Managed with the aim of restoring and conserving wetland and floodplain habitat, the 2km boardwalk immerses visitors in the incredible natural environment of the Marshes. Owned by the Macquarie Marshes Environmental Trust and managed by the Macquarie Wetlands Association Incorporated, “‘Burri-

ma” is focused on providing insights into the combined effects of river-flow regimes and land and water management practices on the wetland ecosystem.

According to the Association, this continued understanding of the drivers of the wetland health will assist with the maintenance and restoration of the Marsh environment on the property.

The property has been managed in consultation with traditional owners, local landholders, government agencies, and land management specialists.

FAITH MATTERS

Where is God in your life? By MAUREEN NORTH THE Bible in the Book of Deuteronomy 6:5 (New King James Version) says: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” So, who is this God? God is the creator and sustainer of the universe. God is also all-powerful, all-knowing, all-present, and all-good. God’s other attributes include holiness, righteousness, unchanging, merciful, and eternal. God is to be the number one priori-

ty in our lives. God has told us to love him with everything in us, that is with every little bit of who we are. We come to God through faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. With God, no one could ever be pleasing to him based on our performance. It takes the precious blood of Jesus to do that. God is love. It’s our hearts that really concern God. He is searching our hearts for faith, trust, reliance, and love in him. He is the one I have a personal relationship with, the one who never leaves me, never forsakes me, and loves me.

Local Sporting and Para Champions

LAST week I was delighted to present some of our fi nest young sportspeople with a certificate to celebrate their success in receiving fi nancial assistance through the Local Sporting Champion and Local Para Champions Grants. This program provides financial assistance for coaches, officials, and competitors aged 12-18 participating in state, national, or international championships. Across the Parkes electorate 38 young people received these grants in round four 2022-23 including 34 Local Sporting Champions and four Local Para Champions. These young people hail from Broken Hill, Condobolin, Coolah, Coonabarabran, Dubbo, Emerald Hill, Gulargambone, Gunnedah, Kiacatoo, Merah North, Narrabri, Narromine, North Star, Spring Plains, Tullibigeal, Walgett, Warialda, and Wee Waa. I hope to meet more of these outstanding sporting champions in the future, and I wish them every success! Applications for round one 2023-24 opened in June and close at the end of this month. For more information and to apply please visit the website of the Australian Sports Commission.

Macquarie Homestay welcomes new trees LAST Thursday (June 29) I attended an official opening for the Australian government’s Planting Trees to Commemorate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Program at Macquarie Homestay in Dubbo. Macquarie Homestay received $20,000 in funding to plant trees in honour of the legacy of Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and her 70 years of service to Australia and the Commonwealth. More than one hundred snow pear trees have been planted on the property, especially along the boundary fence, and it’s wonderful to see these now in the ground. The planting of these trees at Macquarie Homestay means that the families of those travelling long distances for treatment at Dubbo Base Hospital will now have a beautiful and restful space in which to stay during tough times. These trees also provide a barrier between Macquarie Homestay and the busy Golden Highway. I’m a great supporter of the work Macquarie Homestay does for those across the Parkes electorate and I’m glad to see the establishment of these trees in a space which provides comfort and assistance for patients and their families.

Saluting Their Service

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton with Rod Crowfoot, CEO of Macquarie Homestay in Dubbo.

IN Narromine recently I had the honour of presenting the Saluting Their Service Certificate of Appreciation to two great servicemen, received on their behalf by Alex and Caroline Mitchell. Caroline’s father, Kenneth Amor Ingram, served as a private in the Australian Army

during World War II, enlisting at the age of 25. He was captured and held as a Prisoner of War in Ambon from February 1942 to November 1945 and was discharged from the army in 1946. Caroline’s uncle, Charles Ernest Ingram, was also a

Private in the Australian Army during World War II and enlisted at the age of 27. He served with the eighth Division Provost Company and was one of those who died in 1945 while a prisoner of war in Sandakan, the Malaysian section of the island of Borneo.

The heroism of these brave men can only be imagined, and it is a great honour to remember them and the sacrifices they made defending Australia. To fi nd out more and to apply please visit the Department of Veterans’ Affairs website.

Coulton criticises Labor’s changes to working visa By ANDREW TARRY FEDERAL member for Parkes, Mark Coulton has criticised the Labor government’s “two-pronged attack on backpackers”. Starting on July 1, the Labor government increased the cost of the Working Holiday Maker (WHM) visa by $130 to $640. In an announcement condemning this move by the Labor government, the local MP described this outcome as “terrible news for the Parkes electorate’s communities and local economy”. Mr Coulton has also stated that this change will make the visa the “highest fee visa of its kind in the world”. The rise in cost is not the only change

to occur to the visa, according to Mr Coulton, he said the government is also considering cutting the WHM visa to one year and removing any regional work requirements. “The electorate of Parkes relied on backpackers to work in essential industries and support businesses by spending their money locally,” Mr Coulton said. “By making the working holiday maker visa so expensive it will discourage backpackers from coming to Australia, this means fewer workers helping out in agriculture and hospitality jobs and fewer visitors supporting our tourism businesses. “If Labor cuts the backpacker visa to just one year

it will hurt our local economy as well as other regional economies around the country. Backpackers are a large source of labour across the Parkes electorate and the coalition supports our successful working holiday maker program. The prime minister needs to stand up today and match our commitment.” The announcement from Mr Coulton claims that there are more than 137,000 WHM visa holders currently in Australia who are spending money on holidays and working in critical industries. “WHM visa holders make up 80 per cent of the harvest labour force in horticulture, while in other commodities they account for five per cent to 15 per cent of

the junior, casual and seasonal workforce.” In addition to Mr Coulton’s argument against the government, the shadow minister for immigration and citizenship, Dan Tehan, said that the “backpacker sector contributed $3 billion to the economy and helped address critical workforce shortages, especially in regional Australia. Labor are making backpackers the scapegoat for their big Australia policy. “Under Labor 1.5 million people are coming to Australia over five years in the middle of a housing crisis, and Anthony Albanese’s solution is to price backpackers out of coming here. Labor’s attack on backpackers will be disas-

trous for our tourism and agriculture sectors and it will make us a less attractive destination for visitors.” Mr Tehan went on to add that even the Labor government-funded Tourism Australia is calling for the WHM program to be expanded and made cheaper. “WHMs are a valuable travelling segment. They tend to stay longer, spend more, and disperse more widely throughout the country than other international arrivals. Tourism Australia is broadly supportive of any changes made to WHM visa settings that expand the visa criteria for WHMs and reduce the costs associated with obtaining a WHM visa.”

By HARRIET GILMORE NEARLY two-dozen netball teams from schools across the region last Friday took-part in the round robin Ridley/ Trudgett Netball Gala Day at Victoria Oval. Schools that sent teams to compete, included St Mary’s Warren and Warren Central School, St John’s Trangie, St Augustine’s Narromine, St Brigid’s Coonamble, St Joseph’s Walgett, Girilambone Public School, Hermidale Public School, and Marra Creek Public School.

Warren Junior Netball’s Kath Barnett said organisers were “delighted” with the rollup of 23 teams at their gala day. “Great sportsmanship was displayed by all on the day; a big ‘thanks’ to all helpers on the day — umpires, coaches and scorers,” Kath said. “A special mention to our teenage helpers who provided assistance on the day,” she added. Having the two local netball legends after whom the competition is named, turn-up at the event, was an added bo-

nus, she said. “It was lovely to have Judy Ridley and Christine Trudgett in attendance on the day and present the awards,” Kath said. “Thanks, ladies, for your ongoing support of Warren Junior Netball.” In the winner’s circle, were the combined team from Girilambone Public School, Marra Creek Public School, and Hermidale Public School, who won the Year’s 3/4 Division Two competition with Warren Central School the runners-up. St Mary’s Warren were the

winners of the Years 3/4 Division One competition and the Ridley/Trudgett 3/4 Trophy, with Warren Central School runners-up. St Mary’s Warren were winners of the Years 5/6 Division Two competition, with St Joseph’s Walgett the runners-up. St Mary’s also won the hotly-contested Years 5/6 Division One title, and the Ridley/Trudgett Year 5/6 Trophy, with St Joseph’s Walgett the runners-up. Warren Central School had four teams enter the Gala Day this year, with many players

participating having never played before. Warren Central congratulated all the students who displayed sportsmanship throughout the Day and enjoyed playing netball. “Thank-you” also to the coaches Belinda Bell, Amy Hall, Ellie Cosgrove, and Miss Shaw, who gave their time at lunch to train these teams. Thank-you also to the umpires, Lily Bruce, Millie Storer, Halle Woolnough, and Mrs Storer, and lots of helpers who also pitched-in to help with the scoring.

Chilly Winter’s day for the Tilley Wines Trophy event

Tilley Wines Trophy Day Winners, Tara and Joey Walker, with proud event sponsors, Christine and Charles Tilley. PHOTO: SUPPLIED. A GAME with a twist — a Two-Person “Irish Shambles” — was played Saturday, July 1 at Warren Golf Club. Sponsored by Charles and Christine Tilley, the Tilley Wines Trophy Day started-off a cold, grey, chilly, wintry day, but ended-up with one little patch of blue sky above us, for only a moment! The weather didn’t faze the 14 golfers that braved the brac-

ing winds and turned-up with their winter attire on; some though, with more layers on then others! How nice was it to walk into the club house at the end of the day where Chris and Charles made the presentations of their fantastic prizes to the winners, Tara and Joey Walker with an incredible score of 76. Coming-in second with a score of 69,

were Dennis Foodey and Tish McAlary. The NTP (nearestthe-pin) winners were, on the fourth, Lyn Rawlinson; on the 13th, John Simmons; on the 16th, Tara Walker; and on the 18th, Joey Walker. Golf balls were also won by Tara and Joey, Dennis and Tish, and Alison and Rhonda, with the winner of the lovely raffle, Didi. Well done and congratula-

tions, not only to the winners, but also to all the golfers for braving the weather and playing on such a dismal, but fun, day. Thank-you also to Charles and Christine for the day and for your continued sponsorship of Ladies golf. Upcoming events include, Wednesday’s Phil and Josie Cosgrove Trophy Day; a 4-BBB Stableford mixed invitational.
