“Food served with love”; Janice farewells Canteen

By HARRIET GILMORE COUNTRY legal practice offers some fantastic opportunities for young graduates, one of our top bush solicitors, told a lawyers’ gathering recently. Courtney Colwell, Principal Solicitor at local fi rm, Lovett & Green, was recently invited to address more than 1000 law students and graduates about the benefits and opportunities available for regional and rural lawyers, at a special event run by the Law Society of New South Wales. Colwell — honoured as the 2022 Rural and Regional Legal Practitioner of the Year — was speaking at the Law Society’s Careers Fair. This is an annual initiative that aims to provide students from across the State, with an insight into the career paths available after they graduate.

P&C Secretary, Ros Jackson, was equally warm and effusive, in her tribute to Janice. “Janice was universally-loved at the school,” she said at the event. “As well as selling the usual commercially-produced food items, Janice often served-up home-made treats, including cupcakes and hot

soup,” she added. Her duties, she explained, even extended to the bigger kids, at the School. “She also looked after the ‘grown-ups’, catering for special events including staff morning teas,” Ros said. “Janice defi nitely went the extra mile, and we greatly appreciate everything that she has done; she will certainly be a hard act to follow!” Continued page 3

A new permanent canteen manager has been appointed, and is starting at the school as Term Three begins.

“Whoa, Boy,” stunning riding-themed murals galloping along at Showground

Making-use of left-over monies; unspent funds from the Murray Darling Basin Economic Development Round Three Grants Program, along with $10,000 donated from the Horse Committee, paid for the new horse-themed murals at the Showground.

By HARRIET GILMORE

PUBLIC art featuring a range of bush-riding themes, are galloping along to fruition at one of our major public facilities. Artist James Middleton, recently shared progress photos of his murals, being created for the new amenities block at Warren Showground and Racecourse. The stunning, horse-themed 2.4 metre high wrap-around murals, were designed by “Paint the Town Murals” with several of the panels now completed, with two more images yet to be fi nished. The project was funded utilising the remaining monies from the Murray Darling Basin Economic Development Round Three Grants Program, with the Show Horse Committee also donating $10,000 toward the cost of the murals.

While the murals are coming along just fi ne, however, it is still unclear when the new amenity block at the Showground itself will be completed, with recent wet weather delaying progress. The new amenity blocks are part of a number of upgrades taking place at the Showground, thanks to an $841,500 COVID-19 stimulus program from the previous NSW Government that was announced in July 2021. Upgrades have included re-fencing the perimeter, re-levelling all concrete and asphalt floors, replacing toilets in the cattleman’s and horse sports camping area, renovating men’s toilets in the main pavilion and in the centre arena, installing a new septic tank for the main pavilion toilets, and a new septic tank with grease-trap for the canteen waste in the centre arena.

IN the Old Testament, the Israelites were wandering about the wilderness in about 1400 BC, when they fell victim to a plague of poisonous snakes. God told Moses to make a bronze replica of a snake and attach it to the top of a pole… those who looked at it, would be healed! This all sounds weird enough, but the message is loud and clear: we need to take our eyes off our problems, and fi x them on the solution. Can you believe that centuries later, the descendants of the Israelites had begun worshipping the bronze snake! King Hezekiah (550 BC) destroyed the bronze snake, but Greek mythology picked it up again another 300 years later. (You’ll see the snake on the pole symbol in medical logos to this day, as a sign of healing). The by-story is one of God sending a cure: but THEN the

cure becomes a distraction… an idol, rather than an instrument of cure. I fall victim to this myself, praying for rain, then checking the forecast and re-checking until it’s as if the weather app is the source of the rain — my source of hope — not just an indicator of what’s happening. Again, we worship the creation, and not the Creator. Aaaargh! You can read about the plague of snakes in the Bible in Numbers 21. But ponder this too… Jesus said in John 3:14-17: “as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so I, the Son of Man, must be lifted up on a pole, so that everyone who believes in me will have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God did not send his son into the world to condemn it, but to save it.”

Jude’s creative kids on display at firstever WAM exhibition By HARRIET GILMORE FOR the fi rst time-ever, Warren’s Museum & Art Gallery (The WAM) features an exciting exhibition of art works that were all created by gifted local children. And for local artist, Jude Fleming, the show couldn’t have come soon-enough! After 35 years teaching children art at her West Wing Studio in Warren, she is delighted to fi nally have a dedicated venue in town to exhibit the works of her pupils. The exhibition is titled “Reasons Why”, and includes creations by 16 of the students from the West Wing Studio, aged from seven to 12 years, which will be on display throughout July. Her art class has been full since the beginning of the year, and is the largest that she has ever taught in her 35 years at the Studio. An accomplished artist herself, Ms Fleming is a great believer in the many benefits that the creative fields provide for children. “Years ago, I found this list about the value of art lessons,” she revealed. “It came from the book, Art for the Fun of It, by Peggy Davison Jenkins, and was written to create the environment, provide encouragement, and supply the material support needed, for children to devel-

These benefits, she adds, are emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. “The list includes 15 points on why art is important for children, including it develops creative thinking, serves as an emotional release, strengthens the self concept and confidence, and increases self-understanding,” Ms Fleming said. “But what I think is most important, for the children and

for me too, is the fi nal point — it generates joy!” she enthused. These points, she explained, were the impetus for the exhibition’s cryptic title. Thinking about the exhibition and these points led to the name of the show, ‘Reasons Why’,” Ms Fleming added. The beautiful display of artworks on exhibition, includes paintings, collages, and self-portraits. For the class, the students meet with Ms Fleming weekly, for an hour of drawing and

painting — each discipline reinforcing and informing the other, she said. The paintings and collages in the show are all unframed and are only held to the Gallery wall, with sticky dots and double-sided tape! Ms Fleming added that, she wanted to offer a big “thanks” to The WAM for hosting the exhibition, and also to their dedicated committee members and volunteers, who helped hang (and, often, rehang!) the children’s artworks.

“As a novice curator, I had not anticipated the weight of the paint on the paper or the moisture in the air, and did not have a ‘Plan B’ to hold the paintings to the walls without damaging the walls,” she explained. “It has been an ongoing necessity to re-stick many artworks each day the exhibition is open, and I wish to sincerely thank the dedicated Committee members and volunteers at The WAM for hanging and rehanging the children’s paintings, as required.” The pupils’ West Wing Studio exhibition, joins the “For Our Elders” photographic exhibition on the Elders of the Warren community that was mentioned in last week’s Warren Star, that is also at The WAM for all of July. Ms Fleming said that it was wonderful to see the interest and response to Mary Small’s NAIDOC Week exhibition, which has continued to grow with more pictures shared and displayed since opening earlier in the month. “Entry to the art gallery is free, so I highly-recommend coming down to The WAM before the end of the month, to see both of these incredible exhibitions,” Ms Fleming said. “We are so lucky to have such a beautiful space in town permanently to showcase art,” she concluded.

Vandals strike “most colourful loo” again; with CCTV on the way for site By HARRIET GILMORE LESS than two weeks after taking-out Australia’s “Most Colourful Loo” award, the ladies toilets at Macquarie Park — itself a beautiful tribute to our fallen war dead — has been closed, due to vandalism. With indications that the attack had taken place on Wednesday evening, July 12, damage is expected to take a week to repair, pending parts. This was not the fi rst time the facility has faced damage from random destruction, with Warren Shire Town Services Manager, Raymond Burns, again extremely disappointed. “It’s happened a few times at the Macquarie Park bathrooms,” Mr Burns said. “We lock them at night now to try and deter the likelihood of damage, and have increased the locks and security of the bathrooms, but it just keeps happening,” he added. The futile and senseless nature of the damage, was its most disappointing aspect,

A similar vandalism incident occurred at the Showground and Racecourse in April, resulting in the facility now being locked. Mr Burns said the Showground currently remains closed, with anyone wishing access to the new state-of-theart Equestrian Centre, or any of the other facilities at the Racecourse and Showground, required to contact Shire. “It’s such a shame actions like locking the Showground are required, but we hope to install upgraded CCTV there also, once funding is available,” he concluded. The Macquarie Park ladies bathrooms are expected to reopen this week, once repairs are completed. The unisex accessible toilet and men’s bathroom remain open.

These grants are awarded for projects that support small yet vital community needs, disaster resilience and COVID-19 recovery initiatives. Communities from the Parkes electorate received funding in each of the three SRC funding streams of round 16: Small and Vital: Collie CWA Cultivating Community Connections - $10,000. Dunedoo Historical Museum Digitising of Museum Catalogue - $3758.

Western Landcare NSW Inc. Broken Hill 2023 Western Warriors - $10,000. Prepare and Recover 2022 Floods: Lower Lachlan Community Services Inc Festival of the Lakes 2023 - $10,000. Rebuilding Regional Communities - Micro: Coolah Historical and Tourism Society’s Cunningham 200-year Celebration - $10,000. ORISCON Dubbo’s Festival of Colours 2024 - $5000. Round 18 is now open, with applications closing in August. For more information visit the FRRR website.

Energy efficiency grants IT’S wonderful to see that several businesses in the Parkes electorate have successfully applied for funding through round one of the Australian government’s Energy Efficiency Grants for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises program. These grants provide up to $25,000 to support businesses to upgrade or replace equipment to improve their energy efficiency. The aim is to assist industries in reducing their

energy use and emissions, and I’m pleased to see the government making grants available, as with fi nancial pressures bearing down on so many this is not something easily achieved without support. Eight projects received funding in the Parkes electorate, including a number of projects for businesses in Dubbo. There was a high level of interest in round one and I am informed that a second round of grants with more available funding is planned for 2024.

New amenities for Gwydir Fitness Centre THE Gwydir Fitness Centre has been fitted out with new amenities thanks to phase three of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program. I was pleased to cut the ribbon last week to officially open the new and improved amenities with fi nance manager for Gwydir Shire Council, Graham Cutmore. This program was initiated under the coalition government in order to support local governments to deliver improvements in their areas, so I’m thrilled to see practical Federal member for Parkes, Mark Coulton at the opening of the outcomes in towns across the Gwydir Fitness Centre’s new amenities with finance manager for Parkes electorate. About 20 local children attended a leather Hard at work! Children focussing on their workshop at the Library during the school holidays, where they designed and made their unique designs for the Library’s Lego own leather belt to take home. Challenge.

Clever young minds; some of the many talented children at the Library Lego challenge last week. SPOILT for choice, local kids had plenty of activities at Warren Shire Library to keep them entertained these past school holidays. In the fi rst week of the winter break, local artist Jude Fleming hosted a “Young Artists Workshop”, teaching drawing skills to a group of budding future Picassos. The students used their peers as live models to practice their stilllife drawings, learning plenty of skills to fi ll-up their sketch-books. Up next, was the Lego Chal-

lenge with the pupils required to create a range of Lego designs in only a limited time, with the winner of each round taking home a great prize! Last week of the holidays, the children were treated to an incredible leather workshop run by Racheal Fanning from the Bushcraft Café in Girilambone. Each participant was able to make and take home, their own personally-designed and crafted leather belt; what an amazing day!

“True spirit of rugby” trophy win for Western Plains kids at Gala event

True spirit of “the game they play in heaven”; the Western Plains U11s team were awarded the coveted GR Paton “Spirit of Rugby” Shield at the U11s NSW Junior Rugby Union State Rugby Gala in Sydney over the weekend. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED.

Happy country kids with their heroes. Western Plains U11 juniors, Fred Anderson, Jannali Walker, Sonny Hadfield, Hugo Kinsey, and Hugh McCormack, with two of the current Wallabies squad, at the U11s NSW Junior Rugby Union State Rugby Gala.

By HARRIET GILMORE THERE’S an old sporting proverb; it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game… In a true measure of their sportsmanship in this regard; the Western Plains U11 representative side, was awarded the GR Paton “Spirit of Rugby” Shield at the U11s NSW Junior Rugby Union (NSWJRU) State Rugby Gala in Sydney over the weekend. The Shield is presented to the squad who best demonstrates the values that underpin the game, also known as the “Spirit of Rugby”. This award is voted on by all teams at the gala event each year with the trophy a wonderful achievement for the boys from

the bush; and their parents, coaches, and assistants. A spokesperson for the NSW Junior Rugby Union, said that the GR Paton Shield, is awarded at the Gala Day to the team — and their supporters — that showed the greatest “Rugby Spirit” over the weekend. “This is a unique award that takes no notice of results on the field, but more of the attitude and behaviour shown by the team and their supporter cohort over the weekend,” the spokesperson said. “We feel this truly reflects the ethos of what this carnival is about,” they added. Another benefit of the award, the spokesperson said, is the example that the winning team shows to other sides and their own fans.

The Western Plains U11s team celebrate their 56-0 win over Central Coast Yellow on Saturday at the U11s NSW Junior Rugby Union State Rugby Gala.

“It sends the message to the coaches and supporters that THEIR actions on the sideline and around the event, have a direct impact on the team’s ability to win these awards. “We don’t know of any other awards like it,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson said that, the conduct of the Western lads and their fans throughout the event, were exemplary. “It was effective as the whole weekend was played and supported in exactly the fashion we wanted,” they said. “It was an awesome celebration of the game.” The U11s team was the fi rst Western Plains team to play at the junior State Gala with the team including a number of local Warren children, includ-

ing Hugh McCormack, Hugo Kinsey, Roger Denston, and Hayne and Hamish O’Hara. The NSWJRU State Gala is a round-robin format which has no fi nals — designed purely for the experience and the enjoyment of the game at a Junior Rep development level. A total of 64 teams of boys and girls played over the weekend at the Gala, with the Western Plains team winning two and drawing one of their five games. The team defeated Central Coast Yellow 56 to nil; drew with Central North White 12all; lost to Sydney Uni Blue 1126; were defeated 26-11 by MNC Black; and won 26-14 against Eastwood White. Felicity McCormack, whose son Hugh played in

the team, said it was a fantastic weekend with the boys performing fantastically. “For a tea m who had on ly t ra i ned toget her tw ice, a nd never played to get her before, t hey d id so wel l,” she ent hused. “It was a fantastic event that ran so smoothly.” Most importantly, she said, the children all enjoyed themselves, with a special guest appearance, making their day. “The kids had a fantastic time, and incredible results against some city teams who play together every week,” McCormack said. “The Wallabies even came and watched on Saturday, which was a real buzz and very exciting for the kids!” she concluded.

RACING NG ORT REPORT By COLIN HODGES

By COLIN HODGES THEY came 15 years apart but Coonamble trainer Colin Edgar has now won the Carinda Cup on two occasions, the most recent with grey mare Miss Ash Star, before a good crowd on Saturday, July 15 at Carinda. The now retired Greg Ryan was in the saddle when the Colin Edgar-trained Miss Watanabe defeated Norms Boy and Zakeya in the 2008 Carinda Cup however, the inform Orange-based apprentice Will Stanley was the rid-

Attempting to win the 1400 metres Dubbo City Toyota Carinda Cup for the second year in succession after winning the Binnaway and Walgett Cups, the Graeme Brooker, Coonabarabran-trained Plectrum (Chelsea Ings, $3.50 equal favourite) led the cup field with Miss Ash Star settling midfield on the inside. Will Stanley found a gap at the right time and the well-supported Miss Ash Star ($8 to $5) hit the front, and in new track record time, held off the fast fi nishing Lenroy (Ken Dunbar, $3.70) to score by a neck with Equilibrium (Paul Zerafa, $17) a handy third. James Hatch who brought Lenroy from his stables near the Queensland border north of Bourke to finish runner-up in the cup, had earlier won

the 1400 metres Local Liquor Gateway Maiden Plate with In Peace. Parked handy to the lead, In Peace (Ken Dunbar, $3.50) finished best to beat Better Than Pearls (Chelsea Ings, $3.50) and Dalante (Andrew Banks, $6). Making the most of the opportunity offered by Cobar trainer Wayne Prisk, 37-yearold apprentice Paul Zerafa from Kembla Grange rode a well-judged race when winning the 1700 metres Complete Asset Management Benchmark 50 Handicap on Berlotti, in new track record time. Raced by Butch Eves and the trainer Wayne Prisk, Borlotti ($5) from the back of the field fi nished strongly to win by almost four lengths from the leader Intense (Chelsea Ings, $5) and The Cave (Ronald Simpson, $4.40).

Trainer Graeme Brooker and Chelsea Ings who missed out in the cup with Plectrum, had won the opening race, the 1000 metres Walgett Hunt Camp Fish Newsagency Maiden Handicap with Smart ‘N’ Ritzy. Straight to the lead, Smart ‘N’ Ritzy ($2.30 to $3.50) accelerated at the top of the straight and breezed home by five lengths from Cinders (Paul Zerafa,$10) and Oh No Devon (Ken Dunbar, $3). Backed from $2.70 to $1.80 favourite, Super Son missed a place and a $2000 bet found a new home in a bookie’s bag. Before riding successfully in Queensland for more than two years, Wendy Peel rode a winner at Carinda and she was pleased to be back this year to win the Wayne ‘Bronco’ Lunn sponsored Benchmark 45 Handicap on Twy-

born Affair for Coonamble trainer Cec Hodgson. A last start Walgett winner, Twyborn Affair ($5) broke clear in the straight and won by two lengths from Inzaghi (Will Stanley, $7) and Geesheehan (Andrew Banks, $3 eq. Fav.). To the cheers of a happy group of owners from Condobolin, Tottenham and Trundle, the Rodney Robb, Nyngan-trained Sindagar won the 1400 metres O’Brien Brigalows Pastoral Company Class One Handicap. Well-ridden in the lead by Dubbo apprentice Jake Barrett, Sindagar ($3.80) was under siege in the straight but held off Royal Samer (Andrew Banks, $3 fav.) to score by threequarters of a length with Hussniacki (Ken Dunbar, $3.80) fi lling third place.

A total of 12 ladies turned-out to play on a sunny winter’s day to vie for the winner’s prize. Val Soulsby, in top-form, brought in the winning score of 71, with Josie Cosgrove coming second on a count-back from Alison Payne; both on 74. The scratch winner was Debbie Kentwell on a countback from Christine Tilley; who also bagged the NTP (nearest-the-pin) on the 18th hole. Golf-balls went to Val, Josie, Allison, Christine Tilley, and Christine Trudgett — congratulations to all ladies involved. A big “thank-you” also to the Nevertire Hotel for their continued support of ladies golf and for their wonderful vouchers; the winners were delighted! Even though it was dismal playing conditions, bleak and cloudy, a total of 16 ladies turned-up for the day’s play. In the winner’s circle, Kaye Martin— pulling-out all the great shots and trying her hardest to outdo Alison’s trick-plays — came out the winner with a fantastic score of 37 points. Hot on her heels, though, on 36 points in second place, was Deb Kentwell. Getting back in form, was Christine Letton in third position on 34 points. The NTP winners were, on the fourth and 18th, Judy Ridley; on the 13th, Deb Kentwell; and, on the 16th, Rhonda Darcy. Golf balls went to Kaye, Deb, Chris Letton, Chris Tilley, Alison, and Val. Val Soulsby was also the lucky winner of the raffle. Congrats to all winners and a big “thank-you” to the loyal sponsors Rhonda and Christine; the prizes were amazing! Upcoming events include, on Wednesday, July 19, 18-Hole Stableford, while, on Saturday, July 22 is the First Round of the Club Championships — a 27-hole Stroke event, being played in conjunction with the Vets’ Championships. Nominations must be in by 5pm, Friday, July 21 with a sheet on the notice-board at the Club to sing-on. In more sombre news, the Ladies wish to offer their sincere condolences to John Wild and his family, on their recent sad loss.
