Time to dust off the boots, the Atmos Renewables Nevertire Rodeo is on again GET ready to kick up some dust because the Atmos Renewables Nevertire Rodeo is on again later this month. Spectators can catch all the thrills and spills at the tiny community of Nevertire’s biggest annual event. More than 10 times the population of the entire village packed out the Noel Waters Oval last year, and the 2024 event is set to be even bigger and better than ever. Tom Russ, president of We of the Nevertire, the volunteer organising committee of the Nevertire Rodeo, said he was looking forward to another action-packed day of rodeo and horse sports. “Last year we were blown away with the number of spectators and entrants for our fi rst event in three years. More than 150 riders entertained over 1200 spectators for a cracking return to the rodeo circuit,” said Tom. Continued page 3

Time to dust off the boots, the Atmos Renewables Nevertire Rodeo is on again From page 1 “This year we’ve teamed up with the Cobar Rodeo committee again to continue our ‘Best in the West’ competition. Riders who compete in the Open Barrels, Open Bull Ride, Open Saddlebronc, and Open Bareback at Nevertire, and then at the Cobar Rodeo the following weekend, are battling it out for the chance to win bragging rights and incredible custom ‘Best in the West’ belt buckles. “It was a huge success last year, and I’m looking forward to heading over to Cobar to present the winners.” As well as the open events, spectators at the Atmos Renewables Nevertire Rodeo will be able to cheer on riders in the Novice Bullride, Saddlebronc and Bareback events, Ladies, Junior and Juvenile Barrel Racing, Junior and Juvenile Steer Rides, and Dog Jumping. The ever popular local ‘Donkey Race’ is also back again, as well as a Locals Steer Ride, giving amateurs from the community the opportunity to put their skills to the test. “It’s not just the pros on show. We know the locals like to get involved too, and the donkey race and local steer ride is always a good laugh and test of skills and courage,” added Tom. “Gates will open from 12pm, and there will be a full bar and barbecue facilities onsite. We’ll have EFTPOS available, but we also recommend cash as the service in Nevertire can be dodgy at the best of times, let alone with an extra thousand people in town,” Tom joked. “There’s also limited shade

and seating so feel free to bring along your own chair and your best big cowboy hat.” The not-for-profit event is run by a dedicated group of volunteers from the community, with all funds raised from the rodeo donated back into the region. “The committee was started almost two decades ago as a way to bring the community together for fun day out and to raise money for local causes. It’s volunteers on the gate, running the bar and cooking the barbecue. Donating their time to put on a cracking event to bring everyone together and raise money for the community. “It’s also important I acknowledge our sponsors, without their continued support we just wouldn’t be able to put on the event,” added Tom. “Thank you to Atmos Renewables for coming back onboard as our major sponsor as well as the Nevertire Hotel, Western Rivers Vets, JMD Bulk Haulage, Western Farm Machinery, IOR Rural, Mackay’s Ag and Earthmoving, Three Rivers Machinery, Shute Bell Lawler, Rasmussen Transport, Adam Boyd Rural Contracting, Ryan Mason Engineering, MTR Harvesting, Elders Warren Macquarie Toyota, Warren Meathouse, Ray White Richardson Sinclair, J R Contracting, IGA Warren + Liquor, Lottie Rae Art, RDA Orana, Delta Agribusiness Nevertire and Quigley Farms.” Nominations for riders are now open via ABCRA, with up to $10,000 in prize money up for grabs. FAITH MATTERS

Failures Forgiven By MICHAEL CAMPBELL FAILURE: is not an “if” but “when”. It might be that time you realise the world does not revolve around you. (Yes, two-year-old granddaughter, I’m looking at you!) It might be when you have a brush with the law, or face investigation for a crime. It might be when you get rejected by someone you love. The older we get, the more the failures pile-up. There might even be times when we wonder if we are going to survive them. Yet, God has done something about failure. Paul writes in Romans 8: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Switched on: Eliza’s COVID hobby, now a fun, lamp-making workshop

There seems no end of critics, and their “feedback”, until we meet God. Thankfully. with God there is no guilt. No shame. No penalty. Jesus has done for us what we could not do for ourselves. That is extraordinary! Which also means: our prayers are received by a loving God. By Someone who is compassionate, kind and merciful. He does not push us away. He is not tired of our tears. His action toward us is not empty, but real and costly. “Our Father who is in heaven, may Your name be treasured, and Your will be done… forgive us the wrong we have done to You, and help us to forgive like You.”

Political News & Opinion COULTON’S ULTON’S CATCH TCH UP Comment ment by K COULTON, MARK Federal ral Member for Parkes arkes

National Farmer Rally I JOINED thousands of farmers from across the country outside Parliament House last week, for the National Farmer Rally. Our farmers have had a gutful of being constantly attacked by this Labor Government, and they’re calling for a “fair go” to keep feeding and clothing the nation. The sensible changes farmers want to see include scrapping the truckie tax, scrapping new taxes for biosecurity and superannuation, scrapping water buybacks, scrapping unnecessary red tape, scrapping reckless renewables, protecting the 88-day backpacker visa and overturning the decision to ban live sheep exports by sea. The Prime Minister and the Agriculture Minister didn’t even have the decency to face the farmers who came all the way to Canberra to send the Government a message. It just goes to show that Labor doesn’t care about our agriculture industry and isn’t interested in listening to what our farmers have to say. I’m proud to stand with our farmers and The Nationals will always back them.

School Leavers’ Guide MY 2024 School Leavers’ Guide is now available for all graduating students in the Parkes electorate. There’s a lot to consider when deciding what to do after school and this guide is a great resource, helping students to explore all their options so they can make the best choice for them. It contains valuable information about further education and training opportunities, fi nancial assistance, fi nding employment, mental health support services, obtaining a Medicare card, applying for a Tax File Number, and enrolling to vote.

Road survey extended THE National Road Survey has been extended to the end of this month, ensuring more road users have the opportunity to have their say on some of Australia’s worst roads. Launched in June, the survey has garnered thousands of responses from across the country as concerned road users nominate locations that pose serious safety and productivity issues.

With $27.9 billion worth of infrastructure projects cancelled, cut and delayed within the fi rst two years of the Labor Government, this survey provides an opportunity to highlight the impact these cuts and delays are having at a local level. As someone who drives across half of New South Wales on a regular basis, I know there are many roads in the Parkes electorate that are not up-to-scratch.

ROY’S OY’S OUND-UP ROUND-UP Comment mment by ROY Y BUTLER, te Member State for Barwon

G’day folks, THIS week is the fi rst sitting week back since Parliament rose on August 15, but it has been a busy four weeks, with a lot of committee work, Budget Estimates, and most members taking the time to visit with constituents in their electorates. Over the past fortnight, I have been out in the electorate visiting Broken Hill, among other places. The coming two weeks, could see some of my legislation coming-up for debate, and there will also be plenty of Government bills going through Parliament. It should be a busy fortnight.

New Western Region Police Commander BEFORE I was elected to Parliament, I worked as a regional manager of the Western Region of the NSW Police Force for 10 years from 2009 to 2019. I have always said it was a great job and, in that time, I made many lifelong friendships. Recently, in Dubbo, I got to say “thanks” to Assistant Commissioner, Rod Smith for his time as the Region Commander West Region, and also to welcome Assistant Commissioner, Andrew Holland, who is now substantively in the role. Police are often the only Government agency in a community, and only one of a few that is 24/7. I’ve had a great relationship with previous regional commanders, and I look forward to continuing that relationship with the new Commander.

Collarenebri Bore Baths SOMETIMES projects seem to take an interminable period to reach completion, but a couple of weeks ago, I was pleased to see one in Collarenebri finished — their new bore baths. It doesn’t seem too long ago, that I was standing in an empty concrete hole in Collarenebri with Minister, Steve Kamper, and in July, I visited with Minister Jenny Aitchison, while they were still putting in some of the finishing touches. Now the Collarenebri bore bath is up and running. At the end of August, I popped by and met-up with the Mayor of Walgett Shire Council, Councillor Jason Ramien, to congratulate him on a job well done — the story is, that he made a bet that he would have it fi nished on time, or he would have to streak down the main street! Fortunately for him (and maybe for those who would have had to witness it), he got to keep his gear on, because

it was completed to schedule. He and the entire community can be proud of the end result. These bore baths are a great tourist drawcard. There are some people who do a circuit of bore baths across the outback. When I dropped by the Collarenebri baths, there were people from Sydney, Queensland, and Victoria taking to the water and spending time in this great community. These sorts of attractions, help make a town more liveable, and they bring visitors, who in turn bring money into the local economy.

Bounty for Pests GOOD seasons for farming are, unfortunately, also good seasons for pests, which is why we are seeing an explosion in the number of vertebrate pest species in Barwon and across regional NSW. I have always said I support a bounty of feral pest species. However, it needs to be one component of a holistic approach to tackling this issue, including baiting, trapping, fencing, and ground and aerial shooting. No one method is enough. The pathway to farmers applying for authorised campaigns needs to be made simpler. We need to ensure our farmers are equipped with the hardware, such as “Category D” fi rearms, and LLS supplied traps, to manage pests as is their legal obligation on their land. We have been in consultation with peak groups and the government about a more comprehensive, holistic approach to pest control.

Broken Heel Festival THE Broken Heel Festival in Broken Hill has come to an end for another year, but it was another very successful year for the event. A celebration of colour and diversity, it was inspired by the hit Australian fi lm, “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, because some of the scenes of the movie were fi lmed in the Palace Hotel at Broken Hill. The event has been running since 2015. A combination of locals and visitors pile into Broken Hill to enjoy the colourful and uniquely Broken Hill-style spectacle. This year I was there to join in the fun, complete with a mirror cowboy hat (which, I fear could have proved a navigation hazard for overhead aircraft). There were thousands of people crammed into pubs in town, especially the Palace Hotel. I spoke to people who came from Queensland, Victoria, New Zealand, and all over NSW. Everyone was excited to be there. I also got to catch-up with some good friends including my mate, Petah, who runs Silverton Outback Camels, who had made a big effort to add bling to her camels (which we were calling “drag camels”). I also met-up with some old workmates, Superintendent Dave Cooper, and Inspector Chris Wallace, both great guys from the

Barrier Police District. There were so many people in town that accommodation was very tight in Broken Hill, transport into the city was also well-booked, and owners of local businesses said they had had several days of heavy trading. There is no doubt that the festival was doing great things for the local economy, events like this bring a lot of money into regional communities. Silverton was also pumping, about 500–600 people arrived by car, bus and motorbike while I was there. There was also live entertainment in full swing and plenty of families out for the day. I tried to get into the bakery to say “g’day” but there was a huge lineup. Sadly, we have been told there will be no Broken Heel Festival next year because the Palace Hotel, which organises much of the celebration, will be focusing on renovating. The owners say that there might be events in the future, especially with talk of a sequel to Priscilla in the works. Given how much money Broken Heel brings into the local community and the joy it brings to visitors and locals alike it would be sad to see the festival end, hopefully it will be kept alive in some form until the Palace is ready to rejoin the festivities.

Imperial Lake WHILE I was in Broken Hill, I took the opportunity to join Landcare Broken Hill members to look at the progress to date — and discuss next steps for — the Imperial Lakes project. This is a visionary recreational area built on the site of a decommissioned water supply reservoir outside Broken Hill. When completed, the site will be a huge benefit to education, the environment, tourism, and local amenities. I have supported this project since the concept was first discussed. I will continue to work with the team at Broken Hill Landcare, who are doing an amazing job on seeing this project progress.

Broken Hill goes to the dogs ANOTHER thing I did while I was in Broken Hill, was to visit the local greyhound racing track. Greyhound racing is alive and well in Broken Hill, with a strong club and membership that loves their dogs and sport. I joined the club for several races in their nine-race meet. I was made to feel very welcome. I caught-up with some of the crew from Greyhounds As Pets and congratulated one of the winners. The Broken Hill Greyhounds Club has free entry, live entertainment, a food van, and a bar. It’s defi nitely worth going to check-out greyhound racing in Broken Hill. They’re fast little buggers. Without an SLR camera, it is hard to take a picture — the iPhone just catches a blur. I also took the time to look-in on a Greyhounds as Pets adop-

tion day, being held in O’Neill Park. There were some beautiful dogs looking for their forever home, all up to date with their vaccinations, desexed, and assessed for suitability as a pet. Some greyhounds never make it to the track, or are just not suitable for racing, but can make a beautiful, chilled-out companion. I was lucky enough to see Gordy go to his new home. I hope lots more dogs are as lucky as Gordy. If you are interested in adopting a greyhound head to the website https://www. gapnsw.com.au/

Narrabri Pathology update BOTH Narrabri and Moree Pathology services are in the process of making the transition from SydPath to NSW Health up until Tuesday, November 19. While the transition is in progress and while upgrades are being made, there will be a mixture of services available or done from Narrabri and Moree. This will all be resolved by the transition date. But use of the two sites will vary during the upgrades and modernisation of the two sites. I’d like to thank MP Ryan Park again, for his responsiveness and willingness to listen and intervene with my request to keep Pathology local in Narrabri. The ongoing dialogue and ease of access was the key factor in keeping Narrabri Pathology local.

Farmers Protest I WAS in Canberra last week at the National Farmers’ Federation National Ag Rally, which drew State and Federal MPs and farmers from every State and Territory across Australia. I got to speak with NSW Farmers reps and people in all types of Agriculture across the country. They had a stack of issues they wanted addressed, including issues to do with water, live sheep exports and the diesel rebate, but there was one over-arching message, which was that the Australian Federal Parliament needs to listen to agriculture, farmers, and industry, not just the loudest minorities. Everyone needs to be heard and their views considered. Political decision-making shouldn’t be a race to the left or run by minority political ideologies. It should be based on science and evidence.

Clontarf dinner LAST week, I attended the Clontarf Foundation’s Ross Kelly Cup dinner. There were around 1000 people at the dinner, most of them young men participating in The Cup carnival. I met the teams from Broken Hill, Brewarrina, and Bourke. Clontarf is a life-changing organisation, it can set young men on a positive path, and we heard many inspirational stories about that on the night. While I was there, I got to

catch-up with Minister, David Harris, and Philip Donato. I think every Clontarf participant in the room lined up to get a selfie with Sea Eagles player, Jason Saab, possibly the fastest man in the NRL. The next day, I had some meetings shifted so I was able to get out and see some of the players in the Ross Kelly Cup. Teams from all over NSW, including plenty from Barwon, were playing in a knockout format with ten-minute halves. The boys are a credit to themselves and the community and demonstrate the value Clontarf offers. I look forward to seeing Clontarf in more communities and catching up with them out in the electorate.

Wall to Wall Ride

LAST weekend, the annual Wall to Wall — Ride for Remembrance, was held. Riders from every state and territory trave,l to their State Wall of Remembrance and then on to the National Wall in Canberra. State and Territory Police carry a baton to the national Wall and, if a police officer has died in the line of duty in the preceding year, their name is carried to Canberra and placed on the wall on Remembrance Day. I got to catch-up with NSW Police Commissioner, Karen Webb and Supt Dave Driver, whom I have not seen for nine years. Normally, I would be on a bike riding alongside Police from Western Region, but I didn’t get the chance to organise a bike or gear. The hyper-masculine, pearl-coloured Yamaha Delight 125cc I use in Sydney is probably not the right machine to ride to Canberra. Hopefully, I will be able to ride along next year.

Community Consultation Research

LAST week, I had the pleasure of participating in a thought leadership research paper for the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2). The IAP2 is the peak body for the community and stakeholder engagement sector. In other words — consultation. They are also renowned internationally for their standards in consultation. I talked to Sally Hussey from IAP2 about some of the things I have seen in my time in office, that have constituted both good and bad public consultation. My experience has been that, when consultation is done badly, the Government ends up spending a lot of time and money fixing-up what has gone wrong with their projects. Good engagement and consultation are the basis of good decisions and good democratic government, it’s why I have introduced legislation to the Parliament of NSW to ensure that consultation, on behalf of NSW Government meets an acceptable standard.

Giddy-up! St Mary’s spectacular return to horse sports events

St Mary’s Parish School Warren — in conjunction with Central West Riding Club — welcomed the return of their Horse Sports event at Warren Showgrounds recently as a fundraiser for the School’s P&F. PHOTOS: BELINDA DIMARZIO-BRYAN AND JO HOOPER.

Contributed by EDWINA BARRETT AND ASHLEE LANCE ST Mary’s Parish School Warren — in conjunction with Central West Riding Club — celebrated a spectacular return to their Horse Sports event in early September at Warren Showgrounds. As a major fundraiser for the St Mary’s Parents and Friends committee, all profits from the event go directly back to the P&F to fund programs and resources to benefit every student enrolled at the school. The event attracted 75 enthusiastic riders from 19 schools across the Central West and other areas of NSW. Competitors showcased their skills, over two action-packed days, in events including dressage, show-jumping, time trials, stock horse pattern, ring events, and

sporting challenges. Students from St Mary’s put their best foot forward and pulled-off some incredible performances to secure the Best Presented School and the Most Successful School trophies. “This was the fi rst time the event has been held since 2018 and it was a resounding success,” a School spokesperson said. “The joy, excitement and success of the event underscored its return to the school calendar in 2026,” they added. Acknowledgement went out to all the families, businesses and individuals who sponsored, as well as to judges, medics, volunteers, parents, school representatives, and the St Mary’s Horse Sports committee on pulling-together this unique event for local children.

Clint and Zoe team up to win first Colly Cup in six years

RACING NG REPORT ORT By COLIN HODGES DUBBO trainer Clint Lundholm and stable apprentice Zoe Hunt combined for a winning double including the Cup with Tupou, at the first meeting held at Collarenebri since 2018. Drought, Covid and wet weather caused the years of cancellations yet the Collarenebri committee was able to respond with an outstanding meeting on Saturday. Winner of the Cups at Bedgerabong and Tottenham last campaign, Tupou at the fourth run back from a spell

returned to form in the 1400 metres B & W Collarenebri Cup in which Peak Road from the stables of popular local trainer Kelly Smith started the $2.80 favourite. Taking the early lead, Tupou (Zoe Hunt, $6) was challenged on the home turn but kicked on strongly to score by over a length from Peak Road (Shayleigh Ingelse) with Toulon Factor (Shannen Llewellyn, $3.40) a half-length away third. Earlier, the Clint Lundholm trained My Oddette (Zoe Hunt, $3.80) overhauled the leader close to home to beat Cumboogle (Hannah John-

ton, $3 favourite) by a long head with Loud (Williams Stanley, $6) third in the 1000 metres Willis Family Benchmark 50 Handicap. A winning double also for Armidale trainer Jane Clement and Dubbo apprentice Shannen Llewellyn with Sippity Sip and Hardyo. Sippity Sip ($4.60) led throughout for a runaway win over Bupkis (Zoe Hunt, $4.40) and Mr Scorefield (Kody Nestor, $11) in the 1200 metres Moree and Walgett Business Houses Benchmark 45 Handicap. Hardyo ($2.80 equal fav.)

tracked the leader in the 1600 metres Benchmark 50 Handicap Woodhams before scoring by two lengths from Jade Division (Will Stanley, $2.80 eq. fav.) and Lady Cornelia (Shayleigh Ingelse, $3.50). Winner of more than 600 races, Kody Nestor who had not ridden since Coffs Harbour in July 2023, won the 1200 metres Jack Meaney Memorial Maiden Plate on The Answer Man at Collarenebri. Giving the trainer Shane Saunders from Warwick in Queensland a winner with his fi rst starter, the previously unraced The Answer Man

($2 favourite) led all the way to beat Bullish Dragon (Williams Stanley, $3) and Yuruga Girl (Zoe Hunter, $4). Racing kicked off with the 800 metres Collarenebri Business Houses and Tatts Hotel Motel Maiden Plate won by the Brett Thompson, Gulgong trained Tropicana’s Cube. Ridden by apprentice Will Stanley, Tropicana’s Cube ($2 favourite) with the lead from the outset, won by a half-length from the Kelly Smith trained Volcanic Gold (Shayleigh Ingelse, $5.50) with Tiny Missile (Zo Hunt, $6) a handy third.

Rain holds-off for family friendly team penning event in Warren RAIN thankfully heldoff for Warren Team Penning Club’s recent two-day event which they hosted over the first weekend in September. Riders of all ages travelled from across the district and beyond to compete with Club President, Greg Woodlock, celebrating the uniquely family friendly nature of the horse sport that makes it so special. “We’ve often got three generations competing together” he said, noting the hard-work that goes into putting it all together. “Thanks to all our generous sponsors, volunteers, and to the Warren Shire for upkeep of the great facilities,” he added. Next team penning event by the Club is scheduled for Autumn, 2025.
