Body found on local property By TESS VAN LUBECK ORANA Mid-Western Police are investigating following the discovery of a man’s body last week on a property approximately 30 kilometres from Warren. Emergency services were called to the property on the Quambone-Warren Road at around 10.40am on Wednesday, December 11, following reports of an unresponsive male found in Marthaguy Creek. A crime scene was established and a report is being prepared for the coroner. The Warren Star understands the incident is not being treated as suspicious, and no further information is available. By TESS VAN LUBECK TAKING months to complete, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) fi nalised its flood clean up project on the Macquarie/Wambuul River recently, celebrating with an afternoon tea for patient locals. Held at the WoW centre on Wednesday, December 11, the event was a way of thanking the community for their active involvement in the environmental initiative that dismantled the giant debris dams blocking the waterway. Removal of “Raft Six” and “Raft Seven” were the fi nal pieces in an eight-month long battle to clear extensive flood debris located between Warren (Top) Weir and Marebone Weir. The Warren Star understands that at the onset of the

EPA Senior Community Engagement Advisor, Georgia Goode, said it was satisfying to see the project through, though there was some apprehension from community members that they could be left high and not-so-dry from the work if the project had failed. Since the program commenced in early April, approximately 5554 cubic metres of woody debris and 234 cubic metres of human-made rubbish has been removed from the watercourse by Northern Rivers Marine Services contractors (NRMS). tion, Simon Cant, was heavily involved in the river raft project throughout, with debris stockpiled on his land. He said the strategy and clean up had been a “mammoth” effort but very worthwhile for what it has achieved. “This project far exceeded my expectations. It was a huge effort, taking over eight months to complete,” he told the Warren Star. “I was concerned that despite good intentions, they would get started and then ‘run out of funding’,” he added. “I raised these reservations at the outset, and the EPA said they would stay the course, and they did!” Director of Incident Management and Environmental Health Regulatory Operations at the EPA, Arminda Ryan, also told the Warren Star that the job was more complex than

anyone initially appreciated. “Until you get the contractors (NRMS) working, it was very hard to tell that most of [the piles of debris] were three metres deep,” she said. Since April, teams of the contactors have been clearing these blockages from the waterways. The only work remaining now is to take away the separated stockpiles of timber, tyres, chemical drums, metals and white goods from local landholders’ properties. In looking to the future, Mr Cant offered some thoughts on how to reduce the scale of devastation with the next flood by targeting a key offender. “My next river focus will be to see legislation that recognises exotic woody debris (like the willow) as a serious threat to riverbank stability,” he said. “Currently it is considered, along with native timbers, as
fish habitat and therefore is protected. [However,] it behaves very differently to say a redgum, which sinks and provides a hollow. It is nonsensical that the destructive willow shares the same protection and status,” he added. “Our upper catchment neighbours must be made to realise the harmful significance of allowing their willow stockpiles to wash into the river,” Mr Cant concluded. Ms Ryan emphasised what a team effort the whole project had become. “The EPA would like to thank the community for working with us, for coming along to our drop-in sessions the whole way through, particularly thanks to the council for advocating strongly for the community and working with us,” she concluded.

By WARREN SHIRE COUNCIL KNOWN for her infectious energy and dedication to health, fitness, and community, Jenny Quigley is a true champion of Warren. A smiling face at the Warren Dental Surgery, Jenny also teaches yoga and leads community fitness classes, helping others prioritise their well-being. She has also been instrumental in driving local initiatives, from revitalising the tennis courts to spear-heading the Warren Healthy Town Challenge, to serving as an active member of the Warren Public Arts Committee. Her passion for creating a healthier, more connected community, makes her a stand-out leader and a deserving feature for “Women of Warren.”
A quote or piece of advice I live by is… I have many! My favourite ones are: “A smile speaks all languages.” “Age is but a number.” “Be exclamation marks, not question marks!” — This means, stand tall and be confident. My yoga and exercise groups know this saying well!
I’m most proud of… Definitely my family — my husband Milton and three gorgeous daughters Laura, Georgie, and Annabelle. I’m incredibly proud of their personal achievements, contributions, and assistance to others and their communities.
How long have you lived in Warren Shire? What do you love most about living here? I moved here 36 years ago from Moree when I was transferred in the Police Force. I am not sure when I can call myself a local! I love the sense of community, friendships and the fabulous facilities available. We are so lucky to have what we have in our small town, from the best IGA, where I spend a fair bit of time talking and shopping, to great tennis courts, sporting ovals, and now the Warren Museum and Art Gallery. Tell us about some of your favourite places to visit in the Shire. Victoria Oval is my absolute favorite spot — it includes the Sporting and Cultural Centre where I teach yoga and exercise, the tennis courts, the outdoor gym, and I can enjoy the sculptures along the riverbank or around the oval.
On the weekend, you can find me… On Saturday mornings, you’ll find me “on the mat” teaching yoga. I also love supporting the Warren Pumarettes and Pumas during rugby season. Sundays
Some more about you… You’re well-known for your involvement in the community, what initiatives have you been part of and what inspires you to serve your local community?
Quickfire questions… A usual morning looks like… Nothing exciting! Very routine Monday to Friday, leaving home at 7.30am for work at the Warren Dental Surgery.

I’ve been actively involved in the Warren and District Tennis Club for years and have seen the transformation of the courts from bitumen and dirt to artificial grass, thanks to years of fund-raising. We also still have “I love Warren” T-shirts from that campaign. I’ve also been part of the Warren and District Arts Council, which helped bring the “cockatoo sculptures” along the riverbank and the sporting figures around Victoria Oval to life. Another project I’m proud of, is the Warren Healthy Town Challenge. While we didn’t win, we were runners-up, and the prize went toward the outdoor gym — where no membership is required! I also run a weekly Community Exercise Class on Tuesday mornings at the Sporting and Cultural Centre. It’s wonderful to see everyone laugh and exercise together - laughter really is the best medicine! I believe if you have the opportunity to help out in your community, then you should. After all, you get back as much as what you give. I also think it is important for your children to see you contributing in any way you can. What’s a hobby or activity you wish you had more time for? I would love to have more time to be creative or artistic… one day!! Finally, what piece of advice would you give to other women living in rural communities? Become involved, and smile and say “hello”; you never know where it may lead you.

By WARREN PASTORAL & AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION WARREN Pastoral and Agricultural (P&A) Association — the organisers and coordinators of the annual Warren Show — held their AGM in early December, followed by Christmas drinks and nibbles. Discussions at the AGM were wide ranging and included appreciation of the work put in for this year’s event, and also ideas on making it even better next year. Thanks were extended to the outgoing president, Justin Sanderson, for his work in the role.
The meeting also decided that the 2025 Warren Show will be held on Saturday, June 14, a week after the King’s Birthday long weekend. The Warren Show Committee is looking for passionate locals to join the team for the 2025 Show. The next general meeting of the P&A will be held in late January at Warren United Services Club. Those interested in becoming involved with the P&A are most welcome to come along. Follow the Warren Show on social media to stay up-to-date with all the Show news.
By WARREN SHIRE COUNCIL FORMER mayor, Milton Quigley, and other former councillors were the guests of honour as Warren Shire Council recently marked the official opening of upgrades to the Carter Oval Youth Sports Precinct and Warren War Memorial Swimming Pool. These projects — made possible with funding from the Stronger Country Community Fund — highlight Council’s commitment to improving local infrastructure for the benefit of all residents. The Carter Oval Youth Sports Precinct now features modern, accessible amenities, including male and female change rooms,

a referees’ room, and a fully-equipped canteen, acting General Manager, Stephen Glen, revealed. “These upgrades are designed to foster inclusivity, with female facilities encouraging greater participation by women and girls in sports,” Mr Glen explained. “Since 2019, more than $5.5 million in grant funding has delivered extensive improvements at Carter Oval, including a turf wicket, cricket practice nets, soccer fields, an athletics track, LED sports lighting and community spaces such as a skate park and splash park with shaded areas,” he added. Warren War Memorial Swimming Pool has also undergone a notable transformation, with $1.6 million in funding supporting vital
upgrades. Improvements include accessible amenities, an adult change room, a kiosk, a modern reception area and new concrete pathways to enhance accessibility.
“These additions have revitalised the pool as a welcoming hub for recreation, relaxation and social connection,” the acting General Manager believes.
“We extend our gratitude to funding bodies, stakeholders, and community members for their support in delivering these important projects. These upgraded facilities reflect a shared vision for creating vibrant, inclusive spaces that will benefit the Warren community for generations to come,” he concluded.

By FRANCES EVANS NUMBERS were up and Christmas spirit was high (as was the temperature!) at the 2024 Carols by Candlelight in Warren last weekend. The slightly later start to the evening on Saturday, December 14, really allowed the torch lights, candles, and Christmas fairy lights to shine and twinkle. It was a joy to see so many children enjoying getting dressedup for the nativity scene when
we all sang Silent Night. The organisers would like to thank the community for their support (and the lovely singing) and also acknowledge the volunteers, readers and musicians. Thanks also to Greg Storer for performing his very own Christmas carol and Zoey Daley for providing the Acknowledgement to Country. The Warren Services Club generously donated the sausage sizzle which was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Jacqui Lomas, Patti Plunkett, and Judie Sturtevant. By LORRAINE FALKINER-SMITH WARREN Spinners and Yarners’ Christmas celebration was held last Thursday with a delicious luncheon served by Emma McMillian and Jacqui Lomas at The Crooked Arrow at the WOW Centre. The group marked 2024 as another successful year for the charitable community group which gathers every Thursday to socialise and create knitted and crocheted items for others to use.
Newly-celebrated Warren CWA Life Members, Patricia Irving (OAM) and Pauline Pallier. Marj Stein and Jude Fleming. These hand-made items are then distributed to needy families locally, nationally, and overseas. The sharing of knowledge and the satisfaction gained by the group members is most uplifting, and newcomers are welcome to join in. Spinners and Yarners are now on hiatus and will reconvene in February — reach out if you would like further information. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and safe, healthy, and happy 2025.

By LORRAINE FALKINER-SMITH WARREN County Women’s Association (CWA) members gathered last Friday at Warren Services Club for their end-of-year Christmas luncheon — a time to reflect on all that has been achieved in the past year, and plan for the year ahead. A highlight of the luncheon was the announcement by Warren CWA President, Stephanie Van Lubeck, rec-
ognising two local women as new CWA Life Members. Patricia Irving OAM and Pauline Pallier have both contributed immensely to the CWA and their local community over many years and are highly-deserving of this accolade. Stephanie presented both ladies with their Life Member’s badges and certificates that were signed by CWA NSW State President, Joy Beames. Congratulations to Patri-
cia and Pauline! Warren CWA also wishes the local community a very Merry Christmas, and we look forward to serving the community in another successful year ahead. New members are always most welcome at the CWA so, perhaps 2025, will be the CWA year of newcomers. Warren CWA is now on hiatus over the end-of-year break, and will reconvene in mid-February for 2025. See you there!

RAIN AND FLOODS MAKE OUR HOMES A BREEDING GROUND FOR MOZZIES Flood water and pools of stagnant water from recent rain have turned many backyards into the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, that spread human disease, such as Murray Valley encephalitis and Ross River virus. Any still or stagnant water around the home can encourage mosquitoes to breed and increase the chance of people being bitten. Tips to minimise the chance of a mosquito breeding ground around the home or school: z Remove all water-holding receptacles from around the yard; z ,i}Õ >À Þ yÕÃ ÕÌ « Ì « > Ì L>ÃiÃÆ z Keep guttering clear; z Mow lawns regularly and clear vegetation areas of moist, tangled undergrowth; z Make sure openings of septic tanks and
water tanks are covered and screened securely. Important preventative measures include: z Ensuring all doors and windows, including Þ ÕÀ Ìi Ì] >Ã yÞ ÃVÀii } } ` condition; z Protecting your skin from bites by covering up with long sleeves, pants and socks; z Use insect repellents on any exposed skin. (The best repellents contain the chemical ingredients DEET or picaridin). Most mosquitoes become active around dusk although some species are active also during the day. The key time to take special care again mosquito bites is just prior to, and for two hours after dusk.

Lions luncheon honours seniors THE Lions Club of Warren hosted their annual Christmas luncheon over the weekend for the senior citizens of the Shire with a festive and fun time had by all, Lions spokesperson, Sally Wise revealed. “Lions Club would like to thank all of our sponsors this year who have donated to our raffles and the community members who have purchased tickets,” Sally added. “The money from these raffles goes into this annual Seniors’ Christmas luncheon each year, as well as enabling us to raise funds for childhood cancer, Lions’ eye health program, training of guide dogs, and buying equipment for children and adults with disabilities to help keep them mobile,” she explained. The money, she said, also aids sending children with a disability to annual camps, providing money — along with help from another local club — to purchase much needed medical equipment for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, as well as various other causes. “Your support means the world to us,” Sally said. “We are always on the lookout for new members who would like to come along and join us and put back into our community,” she concluded.

Clean water: Warren’s drinking supply declared “PFAS-free” WITH contaminants in water supplies a growing issue for many metropolitan areas, Warren Shire Council recently assured residents that local drinking water is free of any PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) related issues. Extensive testing of all bores supplying water to Warren, Nevertire, and Collie, carried out by council in consultation with NSW Health found the local supply is PFAS-safe. Based on proposed guideline values for PFAS released in late October by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the tests confirmed that PFAS levels in Warren’s drinking water are well-below the proposed thresholds, reinforcing the fact that the local water supply remains safe for all residents, council said in a statement. The NHMRC’s new guidelines are still under public consultation and will not be fi nalised until April 2025, however, council took pro-active measures to ensure peace of mind for the community, Warren Mayor, Cr Greg Whiteley, said. “We are committed to providing safe, clean drinking water to
our residents,” Cr Whiteley said. “These results confi rm that Warren Shire’s water supply meets the highest standards of safety and quality with regards to PFAS,” he added. PFAS are manufactured chemicals used in many everyday products, from non-stick cookware to cosmetics and fire-fighting foams. Due to their persistence in the environment, PFAS can sometimes be detected at very low levels in water supplies. However, the results from Warren Shire’s testing show no cause for concern. “Our residents can have confidence in the quality of their water,” Council’s acting General Manager Stephen Glen said. “We acted promptly on NSW Health’s recommendation for initial screening, and the results demonstrate the integrity of our water infrastructure,” he revealed. He said that Warren Shire Council remains dedicated to maintaining the highest standards for the community’s water supply and infrastructure. For more information about PFAS, residents can go to the Water Services Association of Australia or the Environment Protection Authority websites.

Political News & Opinion COULTON’S ULTON’S CATCH TCH UP Comment ment by MARK K COULTON, Federal ral Member arkes for Parkes
Busy week out and about IT was wonderful to have shadow minister for infrastructure, transport and regional development Bridget McKenzie join me and Nationals candidate for Parkes Jamie Chaffey in the electorate this week to discuss all things infrastructure and housing. During the visit we heard loud and clear from councils and local businesses, like Dubbo’s Maas Group and Fardell’s Heavy Haulage, about the absolute need to get the Inland Rail back on track as soon as possible. This nation-building project has the potential to unlock enormous economic benefits for communities throughout the Parkes electorate, which is why the Nationals remain committed to completing the Inland Rail in full. In Narromine we stopped by the Wentworth Parklands residential development to check out the new builds and housing infrastructure; this housing development was funded
FAITH MATTERS
Joy! By ANNITA CAMPBELL IT is with JOY that we light the Shepherd’s Candle in the third week of Advent. A whole lot of joy and happiness was going down the night Jesus was born. Luke, Chapter Two narrates it all for us. The shepherds were just doing their regular thing — staying up and keeping an eye on their sheep in the fields around Bethlehem. Suddenly, an angel turns up in the sky just above them. Along with the angel, they also get to see “the glory of the Lord” shining all around. What that looks like, I don’t know, but I’m sure it’s unmissable! It certainly got the
in-part by the former coalition government and is fi rsthand proof that the coalition can get on with the job of addressing Australia’s housing shortage. On Thursday, Jamie and I travelled to Warren to attend Warren Central School’s end of year presentation assembly. We also took the opportunity to visit the Warraan Widju Arts Centre and the Warren Museum and Art Gallery on Friday morning, before capping off our visit at the Warren Jockey Club twilight races with Nationals senate candidate, Juliana McArthur.
Pooncarie Road opens A MASSIVE milestone for the Menindee community took place on Tuesday, with the official opening of the upgraded Pooncarie Road - a $48.8 million project jointly funded by the former coalition federal and NSW governments. I’ve been involved in this project right from the start, so I’m thrilled to see the 87.5km road from Pooncarie to Menindee sealed, ensuring more reliable, safer and smoother journeys for locals, freight operators and tourists. I was sorry to miss Wentworth shire’s official opening in Pooncarie, but I look forward to getting out to Menindee in February for official proceedings to open the sealed 61km in Central Darling Shire.

Coalition energy costings released LEADER of the opposition Peter Dutton and leader of The Nationals David Littleproud last week announced the much-awaited costings of the coalition’s energy policy. The latest analysis from Frontier Economics reveals the coalition’s balanced energy mix, including zero-emissions nuclear power, offers a cheaper, cleaner, and more consistent alternative, delivering massive savings for Australian families and businesses. The coalition’s energy plan
will save Australians up to $263 billion compared to Labor’s renewables-only approach – a 44 per cent saving for taxpayers and businesses. Nuclear energy sits at the heart of this plan, providing the “always-on” power needed to back up renewables, stabilise the grid, and keep energy affordable. The coalition will ensure a sustainable and responsible shift from coal to nuclear energy by avoiding the need for Labor’s overbuild of infrastructure on pristine landscapes and agricultural land. Australians are facing soaring energy costs, record levels of hardship, small
attention of the shepherds. The angel says to them: “Don’t worry, we’ve got a GREAT message that is loaded with JOY to tell you and everyone.” That would get anyone’s full attention! The jubilant story they tell is that CHRIST THE LORD has entered the world. The shepherds are fi rst-hand witnesses to the most significant event in history! And the wonder of the message they receive continues whenever we sing “Joy to the World” today. The delight of God breaking through into human history in Jesus continues with the anticipation of His coming again. He promised to come the fi rst time, and He did. He promises to come the second time, and He will. Does that fi ll you with joy? Why? Or why not?
business insolvencies, and growing uncertainty under Labor’s renewables-only energy plan. There is a clear choice as we head towards the federal election: Labor’s costly and unreliable renewables-only agenda, or the coalition’s cheaper, cleaner, and consistent energy plan to secure Australia’s future.
The coalition’s policy is the key to achieving net-zero emissions sooner. Only the coalition’s energy plan guarantees a cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable future for Australian households and businesses while protecting our environment and securing our energy needs.

Raced at Warren on Friday, December 13 FORMER central west race caller Pat Bourke who passed away recently at Wellington, would have enjoyed the Warren twilight meeting on Friday (December 13) where three generations of the Stanley family won races in front of a big crowd. Pat’s wife Kathy Bourke is the sister of Wellington train-

First leg of a winning double for Ashleigh Stanley was the Maree Hopkins trained Flying Dubawi ($7) while Peter Stanley’s grandson Dylan Stanley also won on Cumboogle ($2.30 favourite) for Gulgong trainer Brett Thompson. Renowned as an accurate caller with a great sense of humour, Pat Bourke before his retirement called gallops
meetings at tracks including Geurie, Gulgong, Wellington and several others while he also called harness races and was the ground announcer for the Wellington Cowboys rugby league home games. A very well-liked and great character, Pat often worked as a shearer while he was the trainer of several winners including Saint Joseph at Binnaway when ridden by Pat’s brother in law Peter Stanley. at meetings during the same era as other race callers in the central and western areas including Bobby Gunn, Reg Ferguson, John Kerwick, Bob Foran, Shiner Ryan, Harry Hart, Don Ryan, Bill Palmer, Terry Bootle, Tim Moses and Colin Hodges. The funeral for Pat Bourke will be held at St Patrick’s Catholic Church Wellington on Friday, December 20 commencing at 11am. APART from the three win-
ners for the Stanley family at the very well promoted Warren twilight meeting, Dubbo trainer Clint Lundholm had a winning double with Notabadchassis (Clayton Gallagher, $4.20) and Sizzling Tale (Zoe Hunt, $6).
The other winners were the Dean Mirfi n, Bathurst trained Giovanni Star (Jessica Brookes, $2.40 favourite) and Luckyimwithaimee (Shayleigh Ingelse, $11) trained at Narromine by Wayne Collison.
