Centennial Holiday Celebration
for Mid-Illinois REALTORS® Association (MIRA) Thursday, Dec.16 Reality on Monroe, Bloomington Photos by Thom Rakestraw The Centennial Holiday Celebration had all the glitz and glamour that such a momentous occasion deserves. Approximately 100 MIRA members, the public, city officials and executive leadership and staff from Illinois REALTORS® were in attendance to celebrate their 100 year anniversary as the voice of real estate in Mid-Illinois. An official 100-year proclamation was presented from Mayor Mboka Mwilambwe and the City of Bloomington, and the live musical stylings of Ben and Kate filled the air while a lively photobooth set-up provided fun digital memories for every guest to take with. This ‘who’s-who in real estate,’ once-in-a-century event was truly a celebration like no other!

hef Allen Chambers of A to Z’s Catering and Parties, Bloomington, serves delicious meals to the surrounding community. They are aptly named A to Z because they can cook anything; from sauces that range from spicy watermelon barbecue and spicy lemonade to smothered pork chops and Italian marinated grilled chicken to homestyle cooking such as green bean casserole, chicken and noodles and banana pudding. They make everything from scratch, as homestyle cooking is what busy families and individuals crave. For those that are more open to experimental food options, they have unusual dishes such as ‘Chef-Allen’s Crazy Pizza Omelette’ and Cajun Style Crab Leg Spaghetti. With all of the diverse dishes he creates, when pressed for a favorite, Chef Allen admits that chocolate is his favorite food. He is actually a licensed chocolatier, and loves to dip fruit in chocolate and change the flavor of chocolate in any way he can. Chambers became interested in cooking because of his mother; he learned everything from her. “My Mom was my inspiration to become a chef, that’s where I got the passion to cook from, my mom and my grandad. My grandad is Creole, and I had the opportunity to cook under him. My passion came from family and cooking

EDUCATING COMMUNITIES OF COLOR ON KIDNEY DISEASE STORY PROVIDED TO LIMITED
During Black History Month, the Central Illinois Chapter of the Links, Incorporated is bringing attention to kidney disease health disparities. Their program K.A.R.E (Kidney Awareness Resources Education) is designed to educate communities of color and make them
more aware of the facts associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Socio-economic status as well as lack of proper medical care increases the risk of CKD. African Americans make up 13% of the US population; however, they make up
35% of those afflicted with CKD. This is especially concerning given that hypertension and diabetes, which disproportionately affect African-Americans, are the two main causes of chronic kidney disease. Our

They can improve health and wellness, strategically through outreach programs and healthcare utilization for community members, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds. Historically, social inequities have been addressed very slowly. Problems must be identified, and social determinants of health should be addressed
swiftly. The Central Illinois Chapter of the Links is using this opportunity to further their mission. We are focused on educating the community and making them aware of CKD and how to take care of themselves. They want them to be their own health advocate and know the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. People must be aware of health risk factors and visit their healthcare provider
on a regular basis. Kidney disease, if caught early, can be slowed or prevented. The Central Illinois Links strongly believe the more information and awareness that is accessible, the closer we come to overcoming kidney disease disparities. Visit our website for more information about our K.A.R.E program. For more information on CKD go to ciclinks-blackkare.info

REMEMBERING LANGSTON HUGHES, (1902-1967) BY MICHAEL ESCOUBAS
for saying and singing words of freedom now ringing abroad in all the land . . . and forgive us please, for being wrapped so tightly in the shawl of self.
You walked among us, Mr. Hughes, singing songs of hope singing songs of truth. Thank you, Mr. hughes. You ignited a resurgence of black writers in America. You celebrated the lives of invisible men and women— ancestors of those who brushed the boots of Washington.
We pray that dreams too long deferred will find their rightful place in hearts and minds everywhere . . . and when they do
Thank you, Mr. hughes.
we owe to you a debt of gratitude and our undying thanks, Mr. Hughes.
You wrote of dreams deferred and of darkness and chains no man deserved. Thank you, Mr. hughes,
