Past Rotary District Governor 2021 Roundup
Carmen and Jonathan Mattox
Friday, Aug. 13 Old Rugged Barn, Towanda Photos by Carlos T. Miranda Serving as a Rotary District Governor is an incredible honor. District Governors provide leadership, motivation and guidance to local Rotary clubs. Governors have the opportunity to make a difference and have a positive impact on their fellow Rotarians. They also make lifelong friendships and enjoy being together as evidenced by this group of past ditrict governors who traveled from all over the U.S. to get together and enjoy the company of each other. Attendees all got into the Western theme, enjoyed a delicious meal, some line dancing, and shared lots of laughs and memories.

The ATHENA Leadership Award honors an exceptional individual who has achieved the highest level of professional excellence, contributed time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community, and actively assisted others—particularly women—in realizing their full leadership potential.

Aggie Hedin FIERCE ADVOCACY I began my leadership training at a very young age. As the oldest of 6 children, I was second in command to my mother, helping while my father traveled for work. I learned many life skills and developed my strong work ethic during this time, which has created the foundation of who I am today. CELEBRATION AND JOY I am a sincere, genuine, and caring person. I have found it’s best to be who you are and not try to be something you are not. By learning to trust myself and focus on my skills, I found self-esteem and confidence will naturally follow. As a leader and mentor, I lead by example. While words can be great, actually walking the walk and living by example inspires others. AUTHENTIC SELF Over the years I have had the opportunity to

FIERCE ADVOCACY I fight daily to stomp out the cycle of abuse and neglect (with my high heels!) For example, our Healthy Start program helps young women from hard places who are pregnant. Most of these women have been involved with the Department of Children and Family Services where statistics tell us they are destined to be impoverished and repeat the same patterns of abuse they endured unless we intervene. I am a strong and vocal advocate for these women as the agency’s spokesperson; bringing awareness and funding to change their lives

work in various industries (mainly healthcare) working with people of all ages and from all walks of life. These opportunities have taught me that respect is earned, not given. My humble nature and embracing the values of others professionally and personally is what has made me successful in developing longterm relationships. RELATIONSHIPS My servant heart and moral compass have always been my guiding light. I have been fortunate in my life to have strong family support and good health. My contributions to my church, community and work are always filling my tank with energy and joy. It is my investment of sharing my gifts and talents in “paying it forward” that also helps young people in fostering their own talents and skills. GIVING BACK Learning, growing and investing in one’s self is a life-long commitment! It is important as a leader to create a safe environment for the staff. With our team at work, we successfully collaborate to get the job done. I share my wisdom, experiences and life skills, and they share their tech savvy, fresh ideas and energy.
I am blessed to be able to mentor and work with such amazing young professionals. COURAGEOUS ACTS I advocate for my clients and their families every day. With my knowledge, experience, and courage, I understand their challenges and can organize resources and solutions to help them through changing healthcare needs. My passion for working with seniors has provided me with the courage to say the hard, but necessary things to help and guide them to have a voice in their choices so they can maintain independence. LEARNING My motto in life is to not only celebrate the big things, but the small victories as well. With a positive and grateful attitude, I can experience the joy, but also embrace the challenges that may come my way. Whether it is my sense of humor or just being there to listen to others, I believe that is how I help make a difference in people’s lives every day.

and disrupt this cycle, forever. Stomp! CELEBRATION AND JOY I oversee one of the biggest celebrations in McLean County, the Festival of Trees! We bring joy to thousands of people each year who look forward to kicking off their holiday season with this meaningful tradition. The funds raised through this annual celebration help us create joy in the lives of our clients who can then go on to celebrate their joyfilled futures.

AUTHENTIC SELF When I began leading the Racial Equity team, the group used the word “authentic” to describe my persona. I think they meant imperfect, flawed, but real. They remark on my willingness to share and hear difficult truths, with kindness and love; being open about my
RELATIONSHIPS I’m blessed to have a large network of community minded people. My relationship with God, family and community drive me. Our agency spends a great deal of time helping clients heal their relationships so they can be safe, healthy, and well. I use the power of my relationships to bring in the funding needed for their life-critical programs. GIVING BACK I use my talents daily to elevate the community. I dedicate my life to nonprofit work, but also volunteer in a wide range of areas where whether it’s Rotary, Illinois State University’s
Center for Civic Engagement, community committees or mentoring younger women. COURAGEOUS ACTS In the earliest stages of the pandemic, we sent the entire staff home to do remote work but I stayed on site with a handful of my direct reports. We used the power of our network to secure supplies. I communicated instructions to remote staff to support their remote work efforts and acted as “headquarters”, receiving and distributing deliveries critical to the care of our clients, and answering agency phones until we knew how to best keep staff and clients safe.
COLLABORATION Working with other nonprofits to maximize the good we can accomplish is a point of pride. During the pandemic, for example, we were able to share our mask supply with nonprofits who were short, and they were able to share diapers with us when shortages were rampant. LEARNING With a dedication to excellence and continual improvement, I am now earning my master’s degree in Non-profit Administration. Although I am already at the top of my field, there is always more to learn. The future looks bright!

FIERCE ADVOCACY The Athena leadership attributes resonate with who I am and how I strive to live my life. One of my strengths and the foundation of my leadership is my ability to build meaningful, trusting relationships. I believe we as people are made to be in relationships with others and build authentic connections that lift up one another. My goal in relationship building is to get to know others and to understand who they are and what is important to them. I focus on seeing the good in others and in the process of building relationships, there is a natural opportunity to collaborate and to learn from one another. A good example of this in my current role as hospital President is exemplified by two large, independent physician groups that are joining our hospital system and becoming employed. This is
Kathy Yoder FIERCE ADVOCACY In 2001, at thirty years old, I believed I was on my way to my dream life. My goals from the time I was a little girl working as a candy striper at Brokaw Hospital were to be a nurse and a mother. I had my bachelor of science in nursing and I was pregnant with twins. I still get chills from the sadness the next few months would bring. In August, my premature twins were stillborn and I fell into a state of utter grief. Shortly after burying my twins, my relationship crumbled. At thirty-one
a significant change for these physicians (neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons) as they fear loss of independence and autonomy. Although they had other options of healthcare partners, they selected our system based on the trust, mutual respect and collaboration we have built over the years. The CEO of one of these groups shared that the physicians trust and respect me and because of this, believe we are the best partner with which to grow.
RELATIONSHIPS If you ask my team about me, they will tell you I work hard to build a culture of engagement that includes celebration, laughter, joy and fun. Our work is obviously very serious, but that does not mean we can’t have fun. I pride myself on servant leadership and that includes caring for and about our staff. We build celebration, recognition and fun into our work in big and small ways. That includes things like a picnic with a dunk tank (yes, they have dunked me), rounding with a candy cart to thank staff, coming in on night shift to serve ice cream, sending personal notes of thanks to our staff and physicians homes,
PRESIDENT, CARLE BROMENN MEDICAL CENTER & CARLE EUREKA HOSPITAL
communicating constantly in both writing and in-person and always recognizing the amazing and selfless work of staff. This has been the most challenging year for our staff with COVID and as their leader, I have worked to remove barriers, to provide them with the resources they need and to make sure their mental and physician health is good. GIVING BACK Giving back occurs in many ways, through financial giving, volunteering and mentoring others. During the course of my career, I have been blessed by mentors that helped shape me into the leader I am. Mentoring young women has been one of my greatest joys as these leaders are our future. I was honored to be asked by the American College of Healthcare Executives to serve as a mentor in their Diversity Leadership Mentoring program. The relationship I built with a young female leader was so rewarding, inspiring and likely even more valuable to me. LEARNING I firmly believe, “to whom much is given, much is expected”. I strive to live my life this way.
CORONER, MCLEAN COUNTY CORONER’S OFFICE years of age, I was divorced and childless. I felt devastated and defeated. Thankfully, I had been taught from early childhood that character is defined in the face of adversity. I buried myself in hard work. I obtained my master of nursing from Illinois State University in 2005 while also working full-time every weekend and serving as a graduate assistant. After obtaining my master of nursing, I served as adjunct faculty in nursing at Illinois Wesleyan University and as
associate professor at Illinois State University also working full time as a nurse practitioner. While pursuing my doctor of nursing practice from Vanderbilt University I continued my full-time workload as a nurse practitioner and

adjunct professor. CELEBRATION AND JOY I quickly discovered that I found great joy in teaching and guiding young future nurses. I instructed that life’s journey guides us and makes us who we are. That hard work, attention to detail, dedication, empathy, and understanding your patient are cornerstones of nursing. My proudest moments are following my former students and watching their successes and encouraging their further achievements and aspirations. AUTHENTIC SELF In 2014, I became the McLean County Coroner. I saw this as a position that would allow me to continue to serve and educate our community and to save lives by learning from tragic events. It has always been my belief that an informed and educated community as it relates to overall health and risk factors, whether related to congenital risk, substance abuse, risk to our most vulnerable, whether very young or elderly, can and will enhance the quality of life in our community making it a more desirable place to reside, work, and raise a family.
Bringing People Together & Helping Businesses Connect and Grow
COURAGEOUS ACTS I have initiated a research endeavor with Mennonite College of Nursing to assess and evaluate fall deaths in the elderly. Deaths related to falls have outpaced accidental overdoses and suicides combined. Evaluating and assessing polypharmacy, home and living facility safety measures, and assessing risk factors to improve safety of our elderly community, all with the goal of saving lives within our most vulnerable populations through research and education. Throughout the recent and ongoing pandemic I have continued to use my doctor of nursing practice by working on Sundays as a medical provider at Carle Medical Group Prompt Care in Champaign. GIVING BACK I have presented to countless professional organizations, local service clubs, educational and health care institutions, legal agencies and the court system on such topics as the opioid epidemic, suicide prevention, medical assisted treatment for substance use disorders, and providing educational tours of my office. My office has and will continue to offer internships for local university and regional medical schools.

Each year we recognize a group of exceptional business and community leaders under 40 years of age. We are pleased to introduce you to the 2021 class of 20 under 40.
KATE BROWNE, 37 Digital Learning Strategist at Illinois Wesleyan University CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I completed my PhD in English Studies at ISU
In 2020, I actively led initiatives at IWU that made the pivot to online learning possible during the pandemic, and I continue to advocate for equity and accessibility in online learning. My writing on health, body image, and media has appeared in wellness publications like Runner’s World, Refinery29, and Girls Gone Strong. I’m also the Learning Experience Designer for HeyKiddo, a tech company that creates socialemotional learning programs for elementary and middle school children, and the VP of Communications for the Body Positive Fitness Alliance, an international organization dedicated to diversity, inclusion and equity in the fitness industry. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I’m proud to lead the TEDxNormal steering committee as Chair and Lead Speaker Coach, furthering my mission to help people share their stories for good. I’m also the program director for Heat Wave, a beginner running training program sponsored by the Lake Run Club, and on the board of 261 Fearless Bloomington-Normal, a women’s social running organization. I’m also the lead singer of She Said So, Bloomington-Normal’s only allwoman band (so far…I hope I don’t get to claim this for much longer.) THREE FAVORITE MOVIES: The Muppets Take Manhattan. The Birdcage. A Mighty Wind. I love funny stories about weirdos coming together to help each other creating something meaningful.
Development Director for the Boy Scouts of America. I led the scouting special events in Bloomington-Normal. I spent time with the local Parke Regency Hotel, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Community Health Charities of Illinois.
JEREMY DANIEL, 37 Strategic Business Advisor at Integrity Technology Solutions CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I have been with Integrity for over 3 years and work with their clients to provide IT support, budget planning, and implementation of IT solutions. Prior to Integrity I worked as a

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I have been a member of the Mclean County Chamber Ambassador for 8 years and chaired the program in 2018. I was a volunteer and member of the Carle Cancer Institute of Normal Local Advocacy Group, 2020 Alzheimer’s “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” Sponsorship Chair and 5th and 6th grade Girls Basketball coach for the local Upward League. THREE FAVORITE MOVIES: Dark Knight, Tommy Boy, Dumb and Dumber
Limited Magazine | October 2021
THEME SONG OF YOUR LIFE: I consider the entire soundtrack of The Muppet Movie the theme to my life, but there’s one song called “The Magic Store” that reflects what I’m trying to do in this world: “Life’s like a movie. Write your own ending. Keep believing, keep pretending.” LAST THING THAT MADE YOU BELLY LAUGH? I’d love to be able to tell you that I was spending wholesome quality time with my family around the dinner table and we shared a precious moment that resulted in a rejuvenating, soul-stirring laugh. But the truth is that I’m a working mom in a pandemic just trying to get by. When I need a good laugh (which is often), I pull up Kevin James Thornton’s “Tuna Burrito” story on TikTok. WHAT ANIMAL WOULD YOU BE? I’d turn into a sea otter. Southern sea otters spend their time with their family pods eating urchins in California, and just doing that helps their marine ecosystem thrive. I like the idea that all creatures are able to contribute to the world just by being themselves. FIRST JOB? LIKES/DISLIKES? My first job was a change management internship at PepsiCo. This was back in the last century when online banking wasn’t around yet. So, my main project was to produce videos teaching the plant employees how to use their new payroll debit cards. I came up with the idea for a script and we shot some demos in a conference room. Word came back from the plant that my campaign was well-received, and they asked me to write a script for another project. I loved that job and it shows—teaching with stories is still the main focus of my work 20 years later. KATE PHOTOGRAPHED BY ROUTE 9 BY PETER THADDUES
THEME SONG OF YOUR LIFE: “Eye of the Tiger” – Survivor LAST THING THAT MADE YOU BELLY LAUGH? Watching my daughter Jordan swing at her birthday piñata while blindfolded. WHAT ANIMAL WOULD YOU BE? Gorilla, they are gentle but powerful. They are also great leaders and parents. FIRST JOB? LIKES/DISLIKES? Detasseling, I liked the summer income at a young age, and it showed me that hard work can be rewarding, I disliked wearing a garbage bag in the wet corn every morning. JEREMY PHOTOGRAPHED BY LAKE STREET CHICAGO BY SANTINO LAMANCUSA
KYLE DAVIS, 39 General Manager at Candlewood Suites CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: An achievement that I am very proud of is that I was selected as the first Manager of the Quarter. It was a new program at that hotel and to be recognized by the rest of the team whom I have a lot of respect for was a great honor. I’ve also been nominated for the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association Stars of the Industry Award and selected as a scholarship recipient by the American Hotel and Lodging Association Educational Institute.
THREE FAVORITE MOVIES: Jaws is definitely #1. Far and away my favorite and one of the greatest movies of all time. From there though it goes downhill. Joe Dirt and the Fast and Furious franchise are regulars on my viewing list. THEME SONG OF YOUR LIFE: “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes” by Jimmy Buffett. I love to get away and it doesn’t matter if it is for the day, night, weekend, etc. It helps me reset and is a great perspective adjuster. Plus, I’m always on the lookout for a chum with a bottle of rum!
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I’ve been volunteering for over 10 years with the

Family members attempting to slide down the watery surface was almost too hard to watch through the laughter and tears. I’m happy to report that all parties left unharmed. WHAT ANIMAL WOULD YOU BE? Definitely a shark. They are strong and powerful when they need to be, but otherwise so peaceful and effortless in their slow cruise through the water. That is how I would like to live out my life. FIRST JOB? LIKES/DISLIKES? My first job was delivering newspapers. I enjoyed going the extra mile for the customers and making sure their paper was on time and right where they wanted it on their porch. The 4:30am daily alarm was not as much enjoyable to me! WHAT ANIMAL WOULD YOU BE? I would be a lion. FIRST JOB? LIKES/DISLIKES? My first job was as a library aid in high school. What I really liked about it was that throughout the week the elementary kids would come to check out books and when they were done, I got to read to them. What I disliked about it was that Wednesday was laminating day, which meant the teachers would drop off everything that they wanted to be laminated and I would have to roll it through the machine and then cut them out. Not as easy as it sounds. BETTY PHOTOGRAPHED BY LAKE STREET CHICAGO BY SANTINO LAMANCUSA

As a healthcare liaison for the medical and residential community, I have created formal agreements to deliver services to local healthcare facilities, expanded primary and specialty care services in multiple communities and built strategies to increase patient access to new physicians. During the initial COVID-19 outbreak, I had the opportunity to help establish and manage the procedures for tracking COVID-19 employee exposures throughout our hospitals and physician offices. This experience was one of the most humbling and rewarding experiences, as employee and patient safety is one of the
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I am currently the President-Elect of Bloomington-Normal Young Professionals (BNYP), holding a board position since 2020, and will fill the President role in 2022. One of my service projects was assisting Thrivent Financial by making stuffed animals for the children of St. Jude. Having worked at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, this particular service event was close to my heart. I have also been Carle BroMenn’s site lead and representative for the McLean County Heart Walk since 2020. I recently became a committee member for Becoming BN, which is a professional retention program to introduce new professionals to BloomingtonNormal. Lastly, I had the honor of being a part of Leadership McLean County Class of 2020. THREE FAVORITE MOVIES: Three of my favorite movies include Wonder, Charlie St. Cloud and The Greatest Showman. THEME SONG OF YOUR LIFE: A good theme song for my life would be “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey. LAST THING THAT MADE YOU BELLY LAUGH? The last thing that made me belly laugh was when I re-watched a video of my cousin and me singing karaoke. At the time, we thought
our family was smiling and laughing along with us, but really they were laughing at us because we were so terrible! Every time I watch that video it gives me a good belly laugh! WHAT ANIMAL WOULD YOU BE? If I could turn into an animal, it would be a giraffe because I am always paying attention to what is ahead of me, similar to giraffes. Within my professional role I always have to be one step ahead to understand current healthcare trends, and as a natural planner. FIRST JOB? LIKES/DISLIKES? My first job was a tumbling and dance instructor. What I truly enjoyed about my job was that I was able to be a leader at a young age. I taught students ranging from the ages of three to 15, which allowed me to change how I lead when working with diverse individuals. Also, the job was so rewarding when a student accomplished a new trick. The excitement on their faces never got old! What I disliked about my role sometimes was working with other instructors who had a different teaching style than myself, but it taught me to always keep an open mind because you can always learn from others. Sometimes their way is better than yours! JENNA PHOTOGRAPHED BY LAKE STREET CHICAGO BY SANTINO LAMANCUSA

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: When I was a young college student auditing school districts, I had hopes to someday be the person running the school finances. As the Director of Accounting for District 87, I feel like I’ve done a good job at accomplishing that. But more than my title and degrees, doing my part towards achieving our 3.9 Financial Rating, having a healthy fund balance and wellperforming schools makes me feel the most successful.
WHAT ANIMAL WOULD YOU BE? My 7-year-old helped me with this question. He told me the first thing to do would be to pick the habitat I wanted to live in. When I picked the beach, he told me I should be a hermit crab. While I was leaning towards a sea turtle, he told me the hermit crab was perfect because I could pick a new shell anytime I wanted and find a fancy one. So I guess that’s just about perfect for me.

And it was fitting that ISU’s first female president, Dr. Terri Goss Kinzy, was on hand to help celebrate Redbird Women’s Athletics. Palma Entertainment kept the party hopping, delicious food was provided by Moe’s Southwest Grill and some guests got into the movie scene theme by dressing as characters from movie classics.

COURAGE
She sets a good example in the workplace by being patient and kind paying forward kindnesses received.
BY MICHAEL E SCOUBAS
Because she is comfortable in her own skin envy has no place in her life or at work. She looks for the good in people, praise flows from her lips like a cool spring nourishing roots. Open and transparent—when challenged she tells the truth sprinkled with grace and humility. She doesn’t pretend to know all the answers to hard questions, but earnestly seeks wisdom from others.
Courage is what love looks like when tested by the simple everyday necessities of being alive. —DAVID WHYTE, Poet & Philosopher

IN FALL Story and Photos by Deanna Frautschi
October is a great time for you and your family to visit historic Funks Grove. Just 15 minutes south of Bloomington off historic Route 66, this is the largest remaining prairie grove in Illinois. Settled in the 1820s by the Funks and the Stubblefields, the area boasts white oaks, bur oaks and sugar maple trees. Nineteen acres of land were dedicated in 1985 as the Funks Grove Nature Preserve. With the addition of Sugar Grove Nature Center in 2004, the area offers plenty of opportunity for hiking, observing nature and participating in educational programs. So take a late October drive on Funks Grove’s rural road which will be leaf laden with fall’s yellow and orange colors. Put your windows down and breathe deeply of fall’s earthy smells. Walk to the chapel in the trees and give thanks for this wondrous place in the woods all can visit and enjoy.

Women to Women Giving Circle 2021
10 Year Celebration Tuesday, Aug. 17 Hancock Stadium, ISU Photos by Justin Hurt A slight weather reschedule couldn’t deter the celebration of women philanthropists who so generously give to the Illinois Prairie Foundation. Founded in 2009, the dream was to develop a group of women would would give gratns to local non-profits for the benefits of women and children; identify issues that affect women, assure that funds were well spent, celebrate successes and build bonds. Conceived by Pat Grogg and Myra Gordon, the Women to Women Giving Circle began with 103 founding members and now involves more than 300 women. The Giving Circle has awarded $376,991 since 2011 and has helped 54 programs. This year’s focus is on renewal and recovery af the pandemic.

InflatIon? StagflatIon? What happenS If prIceS Keep clImbIng?
T
he prevailing thought about the Federal Reserve stimulating the economy with injections of newly printed money, to rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic, is that inflation will be temporary. The Fed has assured us that as production gets back to normal, prices will come down to stabilized levels and this will keep our economic engine humming as it did before the pandemic. But what if higher labor costs and rising housing expenses are the new normal and don’t come back down? While the Fed has tools to keep inflation in check, there is a possibility that these tools (such as raising interest rates) will derail our recovery and have a negative ripple effect across the economy as it did in the early 1980s. Below are 4 reasons we may see a high rate of inflation persist over the next few years. 1. The Labor Force. Technological breakthroughs are changing the world and our labor needs are not nearly as high as they have been in the past. Every decade since the 1800’s people have been working fewer hours. Millennials and Generation Z are more focused on finding worklife balance than pursuing long work weeks. These groups now comprise the majority of the labor market and combined with the retiring baby boomers, we may find a scarcity in our labor market that keeps wage growth high. In addition, large unemployment benefits have allowed workers to remain unemployed while they search for jobs with a higher satisfaction rate than they had in the past. If wage growth leads to higher purchasing power and lower corporate profits, we could see a needed benefit for the lower-income earners. However, it is more likely profits will remain high as the additional cost of labor is passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices. This may erode any
additional benefits workers see from higher wages, as their buying power remains the same or becomes lower if the cost of goods rises faster than wages. 2. The Real Estate Market. Housing prices have skyrocketed by as much as 15% this year. The Consumer Price Index, which measures inflation, deems housing an investment and does not include the cost in its reported numbers. This may cause the Fed to be slow to react to the true increase in the cost of living. Renters will see landlord’s increasing rents to adjust for higher acquisition costs. Increased prices are due to a shortage of available properties, as well as new construction costs skyrocketing due to the unavailability of materials and labor that were set off by the pandemic shut down. 3. The US Dollar. Similar to what we are seeing today, the 1970’s had high inflation, low productivity, and high unemployment—which became known as stagflation. Inflation only became under control after the Fed drastically raised interest rates, which pushed the economy into a recession in the early 1980’s. Financial markets believe this will not happen again because we are not dealing with the rising cost of oil and decoupling of the dollar from the gold standard like we were in the 1970’s. However, we have new pressures that we need to consider that may affect our recovery. Not only are we dealing with a huge increase in housing prices, but (similar to coming off the gold standard) we have new monetary instruments available in the form of cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin. If inflation puts the US Dollar at risk of devaluation, people may choose to buy more cryptocurrency as a hedge against the dollar, causing a loss in its purchasing power. 4. SupplyChainandInternational Trade. We have benefited from
‘just-in-time’ inventory for the past two decades. Products have been available as needed and shipped from whichever foreign or domestic supplier that has been able to produce and export them at the best price point. The Pandemic has made us reevaluate our reliance on this type of supply chain and there is a big push for more reliance on domestic manufacturing. While this will increase reliability for product delivery, it will also cause prices to increase as we shift manufacturing from countries with low cost of living and labor costs to our country with higher-paid workers and a higher cost of living. Hopefully, the Fed will be correct and we will see lower prices and increased availability of products soon. However, if the above economic pressures prevail, we will see a prolonged period of inflation. If this is the case, the best investments will be in assets that can increase income without losing customers and the worst investment will be those with fixed rates of return. Investing in stocks that concentrate on consumer staples will be better than stocks with high dividend yields—and investing in leased commercial real estate will be better than investing in opportunities such as fixed-rate bonds.
