CARBONDALE: A PLACE TO DO BUSINESS

CARBONDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE—

LOTS TO OFFER/LOTS TO DO

T

he Carbondale Chamber of Commerce proudly serves over 425 members from Carbondale and the surrounding communities. The Chamber offers a wide array of opportunities to our members. Each month there is usually at least three opportunities to meet potential clients, interact with other chamber members, and a chance to grow professionally. The Chamber of Commerce provides monthly membership meetings which are open to each of the over 1,000 contacts that represent our 425 members. These monthly luncheons provide opportunities to meet elected officials, learn about new initiatives at Southern Illinois University and within the City of Carbondale, professional speakers from subject matter experts, and much more. There are opportunities to be a luncheon sponsor at these monthly membership luncheons. As the sponsor you will have ten minutes to provide an overview of your business, introduce new products/services, and/or provide a general overview of your business/organization’s core business. Each month the Chamber offers Networking at Noon opportunities, typically held at a chamber member restaurant, where each person in attendance can provide a short presentation about their business, discuss common concerns among the group regarding a myriad of topics, and socialize and learn more about other members of the Chamber of Commerce. Quarterly, or more often, the chamber will host a Business After Hours event at a member’s location which provides an opportunity to interact with members from many different industries such as banking, restaurants, government, industry, real estate, automotive, education, nonprofits, and many more. These events are less formal and provide an open forum to interact over beverages and food to better get to know the other Chamber members and how they may be able to assist you in your business/ organization. The Annual Dinner and Awards Program, held in February, recognizes and honors businesses, organizations, and/or individuals in various categories. These include: Chamber Service Award—selected by the Chamber’s five most recent board chairs. This honor is given to a Chamber member who tirelessly serves, often without formal recognition. Regional Business of the Year—The Chamber recognizes a business which may or may not be located in Carbondale, but whose impact is felt all across southern Illinois in terms of economic development, charitable support, and/or promotion of the region. Young Professional of the Year—This award recognizes a leader under the age of 40 who is already making a difference for his or her business and within our community. Business Leader of the Year—This award recognizes a person who cares not only for their own business, but also for the growth and success of others. Business of the Year—This award recognizes one local establishment as business of the year. The Annual Dinner and Awards Program is supported by local organizations through contributions. These sponsorships may include Social Hour, Entertainment, Platinum, Trip Sponsor, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. A great advantage of being a member of the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce is

knowledge and information. The Chamber meets monthly with Southern Illinois University and the City of Carbondale to share information among the three entities, disseminate information to our constituencies, and provide a forum to discuss common issues, concerns, and upcoming events. Advocacy is one of the goals of the Carbondale Chamber as we want to represent our members’ views when appropriate. The Chamber does regular Email Blast updates to our members. These promote events, announce alerts from the health department and other agencies, and keeps members information on a variety of topics. These Email Blasts go to each contact on file from each chamber business/organization. Members may also request their own Email Blast, for a nominal fee, to promote an upcoming event, sale, or new products/ services. Volunteers are the lifeline of the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce. s Chair of the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce Board it is a pleasure to work with our over 400 members, Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and others to ensure the work of the Chamber meets our mission to advance the interests of business and make Carbondale a great place to live, work, visit, play, and invest. Helping govern the Chamber is the Executive Committee which for 2021 is comprised of Pastor Christopher Swims of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, Justin Zurlinden (Past Chair) of Keller Williams Realty, Jolene Falat (Treasurer) of First Mid Bank & Trust, Steve Quinn (Chair-Elect) of Samron, and myself (Chair) of Southern Illinois University Student Center. At Large Board Members of the Carbondale Chamber provide direction and oversight of the numerous chamber activities and funds. These members are: John Dosier of First Southern Bank, John Rathjen of Vogler Motor Co., Shane Carsrud of Banterra, Carolin Harvey retired from Southern Illinois University, Nic Skovgaard of Alter Ego, Al Taylor of SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, and Jason Chrzan of Keller’s Crossing at Stone Creek Golf Course. Three additional members representing our community partners are appointed to the Board of Directors. They are Mayor Mike Henry of the City of Carbondale, Chancellor Austin Lane of Southern Illinois University, and Principal Ryan Thomas of Carbondale Community High School. Election of new board members occur in November of each year. Any member of the Chamber may run for open board seats. We encourage you to consider becoming a candidate for the board, as we are always seeking new and innovative ideas for the work of the Chamber to reach of mission. In my opinion, the power of chamber membership is the networking opportunities, interaction with other members by becoming involved in our various committees and other work groups, and by attending our annual dinner and other special events. The return on your investment for your time and efforts can often be realized by the new contacts, new customers, and new learning realized from our various offerings throughout the year. Please understand, we take the business of the chamber seriously. We encourage your feedback and ideas. I hope to see you at our future events, seminars, annual dinners, and other functions.

CARBONDALE: A PLACE TO BE INVOLVED

‌W

hat does a typical day, or a week, or month in Carbondale look like? Well, sometimes it is best to look at a year to see what keeps us hopping. The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce runs on a paid staff of two people. During the school year, we employ two Southern Illinois University (SIU) Interns at ten hours per week. They primarily work in the areas of graphic design, public relations, special events, and member outreach. Our Board of Directors, Committee Chairs and Participants, and countless Volunteers help support and assist us through many efforts and activities. Despite the small numbers, together we are a mighty team. Member Businesses are our heartbeat. Members are included in print directories and other materials and listed and promoted online. We also send them referrals, provide training, and host member events. Member events include ten monthly Membership Luncheons, two Regional Chamber Luncheons, 12 Networking at Noon Lunches, six Round Pies / Straight Talk Lunches, six Business Builder Breakfasts, numerous Business After Hours, and many Ribbon Cuttings. We do our best to connect the business representatives and provide a place for them to promote themselves. In addition to these essential services, we are active in the community in a myriad of ways. The Chamber team works on a number of outside committees including Saluki Start-Up / Weeks of Welcome, Homecoming, Celebrate 618, Carbondale Halloween, City of Carbondale Job Fair, National Small Business Week Committee, Crime Stoppers, Southern Illinois University (SIU) 150th Birthday, Carbondale Proud, Fashion Week, Southern Illinois (SI) Made Expo, The American Heart Association Go Red for Women, Leadership Carbondale, The Great Carbondale Pumpkin Race, and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Fly-In Event. We frequently work with Carbondale Main Street, Carbondale Tourism, Keep Carbondale Beautiful, Carbondale Park District, Green Earth, the City of Carbondale, and many other organizations to put on events or programs. We have had the opportunity for brainstorming on Trails, Outdoor Recreation, and Local Economy from Illinois Main Street. The Chamber is visible as a Representative of the Business Community. Some of the events attended include the Banterra Center Announcement, Meet the Mayor, Saluki Women’s Excellence Event, Progressive Patio Tour, Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) Gala, EmpowHER

The Chamber has an active role in welcoming prospective and returning students. We staff vendor booths and speak at SIU Open Houses, attend FFA Night, SIU Day, student move-in, and more. We coach at the student Etiquette Dinner. We serve as docents on tour buses for student groups, new staff, and current SIU employees. Our Saluki Pride committee paints Saluki Paws on area roadways and does all they can ‘paint the town maroon’ to boost Saluki Spirit. We meet monthly with the Chancellor and Mayor’s offices to learn how we can continue to partner in support of SIU. The Chamber attended the House Hearing of the funding of Higher Education. While the focus of the work of the Chamber is for the benefit of Carbondale businesses, we are also active at the regional level. Our team attends a Regional Chamber Directors Meeting each quarter. We co-host two luncheons and participate in many other Chambers’ Annual Banquets. The Chamber has also had a role in events in the greater Delta region, of which Southern Illinois is a part. Carbondale Chamber had a significant role in the Shop SI Efforts during the Holidays, serving as

arbondale leaders have long been focused on downtown developments. In recent years, we completed the first two phases of the Illinois Avenue Streetscape project, transforming the look of our downtown. An even more exciting and transformative project is the design of a regional transportation center that will sit in the heart of Carbondale! Architects are currently designing the Southern Illinois Multi Modal Station, which will include Amtrak and local bus services, and space for other amenities we may need. All of these Mayor Henry developments will funnel people to Carbondale, which is good news for all of our businesses in each corner of town! Over the past year, if one thing is certain, it’s that Carbondale businesses know how to adapt. Despite the struggles brought on by the pandemic, many existing Carbondale businesses grew, and new businesses opened. I am excited to share that there are a number of exciting projects taking shape in Carbondale. This includes the following: • Cedar Lake will soon receive muchneeded improvements at the boat launch. Grant funding from IDNR will allow the City to construct an accessible floating dock at the existing boat launch, install a floating dock for canoe and kayak use, install new restroom facilities, and build a picnic pavilion! • Park Improvements has been our labor of love. The City of Carbondale recently took over maintenance of Turley Park and Tatum Heights Park. City crews have spent nearly a year removing dead trees, repairing water fountains and bathrooms, and refurbishing a popular gazebo. Thanks to the Kiwanis Club, Turley Park also has a new playground accessible for parents, grandparents, and children of all abilities! • Solar Installation – The City completed its installation of solar panels at three City-owned properties – the Civic Center, Public Safety Center, and Southeast Waste Water Treatment Plant. The new solar panels will provide approximately 1.875 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy to the City. (Pictured is an aerial view of the solar panels at the Public Safety Center) • As mentioned, the Southern Illinois Multi Modal Station will soon be built in downtown Carbondale. The City received more than $16.5 million dollars in grant funding from the US Department of Transportation and IDOT to build the regional transportation hub. This will transform public transportation services for all of southern Illinois! (Pictured is the preliminary design of the

Southern Illinois Multi Modal Station

Southern Illinois Multi Modal Station) As far as new or expanding businesses, Bake Me Happy Food Co. recently announced they’ll be opening on the south side of Carbondale on South Illinois Avenue. This will be the dessert shops’ first physical location, and we couldn’t be more excited they chose Carbondale! • Jen’s Joe expanded and moved locations in Carbondale. They are now serving coffee and tea inside Buckwater Brew Works and Whiskey House. • Kat’s Krab and Go offers a unique dining experience. This restaurant is new to our downtown and serves a variety of seafood with your choice of sauce and seasoning. • Scooter’s Coffee is our newest edition to the west side of Carbondale! The drive-thruonly coffee shop offers espressos, smoothies, and breakfast food daily from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. • Starbucks opened a stand-alone store on East Main Street. The store offers a community room to accommodate local organizations that need a professional meeting space. • Smoothie King and T Mobile will soon open! Contractors are currently constructing both storefronts near the University Place Shopping Center on East Main Street. • OPTIONS at Brehm recently opened a new facility which will serve as a place for students with complex learning disabilities and differences to be supported in a collegiate atmosphere.

This activity indicates that investors and business owners have confidence in Carbondale’s economy and business-friendly attitude. As I have said before, by working together, we are making Carbondale the place you and I, our children and grandchildren, are proud to call home. Sincerely,

CARBONDALE: A PLACE FOR COMMUNITY

I

have an awesome view of downtown, if that is what you are looking for. My office is in the Historic Train Depot in the center of Carbondale. I am walking distance to Southern Illinois University, so many locallyowned restaurants, as well as art galleries, music venues, and places to pass the time on your walk…so let’s take a walk of my Top Ten List for Visiting Carbondale: Cole 10. Have a Dairy Queen snack in one of less than 40 original historic Dairy Queen drive up buildings left in the US. Have an ice cream, but if you want to have the Carbondale experience, eat on the “front porch” of one of our oldest businesses. We will make room. 9. Arrive on Amtrak. Ok, I may be out of order in our trip here, but the railroad (sometimes quite loud) serves Carbondale very well with three trains to-and-from Chicago each day. The train goes other places too…see Amtrak.com for details. I will say it’s a relaxing way to travel and our newest hotel in downtown Carbondale, the Hilton Home2Suites is just across the street. 8. Take a bike ride! Getting back on

track here (get it? Railroad tracks…bike tracks? Is that a joke) We have a great biking community with three long-standing, locally-owned bike shops in the center of our downtown. Carbondale is a great place to own and ride a bicycle. To learn more about trails and fix-it stations, visit bikecarbondale.com. 7. Pick a park. Any park. We has nine great parks throughout the City and surrounding area. 6. Okay that took us outside of downtown. Our walk made me just want to sit down and enjoy a cold beverage…but luckily, we have several downtown watering holes. Whether you are looking for an excellent Bloody Mary (The Cellar), live music (The Hangar 9), friendly faces (PK’s) a cold beer or shot of whiskey (Buckwater Brew Works & Whiskey House) we have something for everyone. Check out carbondalemainstreet.com for a comprehensive list. 5. Catch a show at the Varsity Center. The Varsity Center is a historic movie theatre featuring live music and theater, old movies, and good times. 4. Grab a bite. You must be hungry by now. We have GREAT restaurants in Carbondale. If you want deep dish pizza, get Quatro’s. Vegan? Longbranch Café and Bakery. Date

night? Global Gourmet, Underground Public House, or Keeper’s Quarters. Diner food? Asian? Coffee? Sweet treats? We have a list for everyone! 3. Take a walk. WAIT! We are on a walk. No, but seriously, our downtown is pretty walkable. We also have public transportation in the form of busses, taxis, Uber, etc. But our small town with big amenities is easy to get around. 2. Entertain Yourself! Downtown Carbondale has so many public events, free live concerts, and other entertainment, take advantage while you are here. It would be a shame to miss a Brown Bag Concert, Friday Night Fair, or Lights Fantastic Parade…for more information see the events section of this publication. 1. Stay awhile, take more than one day to explore downtown Carbondale. There are so many fabulous views to be had. I’m so lucky I have the view I do. CARBONDALE: A PLACE TO UNWIND

L

isa Ellis, executive director for the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Alliance, didn’t know the organization’s annual conference in late February would be one of the last large events she would host. In the months that followed, the novel coronavirus spread through Illinois, canceling events and closing businesses. Ellis and the IGGVA staff continue to push their project to make rosé Illinois’ official state wine, and “unite” the industry with a common product. They are doing so in unique ways in the era of COVID-19 — including a virtual wine tasting recently hosted for hospitality industry professionals and media from across the state. For the tasting, I received four local wines from a friendly delivery driver who handed me a hefty box at my home. Inside were four wines sent by the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Alliance, including a Chambourcin Rosé from August Hill Winery in Utica, a Flyaway Rosé from Kite Hill Vineyards in Carbondale, an Estate Rosé from Walker’s Bluff in Carterville and a Rosato from Alto Vineyards in Alto Pass. Attached was a note from Ellis and Brad Beam, the enology specialist for the IGGVA, welcoming participants to the organization’s first virtual wine tasting, along with some

simple instructions on chilling the wines and suggestions for pairing. “Should you desire to pair your wines with food, we have the following recommendations: shellfish, especially shrimp (...) barbecue, burgers and pizza; or spicy Asian and Mexican cuisine,” the note said. I didn’t have to look further than the first line. I decided to make a fresh shrimp ceviche — a Latin seafood dish that is said to have originated in Peru, typically made from fresh raw fish cured in fresh citrus juice. I followed a recipe from food blog “Dinner at the Zoo” with some slight modifications. I split the recipe in half after questioning if I could eat 2 pounds of shrimp on my own. After logging into Zoom — a video conferencing platform that has gained traction during the pandemic — I was greeted by Ellis and Beam. The pair explained their push to popularize rosé, the history of wine in Illinois and the impact of the industry before dividing the group into smaller rooms for the wine tasting. Beam said there has been a winery boom through the state, with the number of wineries roughly doubling in the last 10 to 15 years and now racking up to about 165 tasting rooms in Illinois. But, in speaking about the beginnings of the rosé project,

Beam noted the grapes grown in northern Illinois and Southern Illinois are unique. “One of the challenges we have as an industry in Illinois is trying to find something that everybody can do and do really really well,” Beam said. He said the group talked about different wine styles about five years ago and the organization ended up picking rosé because Illinois’ grapes “make amazing rosé wine” no matter where in Illinois the winemaker is located. After picking a style of wine, the IGGVA began accepting entries into a rosé staterecognition program through a series of meetings in which there are tastings among peers and professionals to assess each submission, according to Beam. Each subsequent year since the program’s inception, there have been roughly 20 wines submitted with the majority being accepted into the program. To be accepted into the program, a wine can’t be too dark in color, must have fresh fruit and floral aromas, have no faults in the wine, must be 100% Illinois-grown, more than 75% of the wine has to come from red or gray grapes, and it must be crisp and refreshing. Illinois rosé wine has won accolades from across the country, including recognitions in the “Experience Rosé” contest — an

international rosé-only wine competition held annually in California. “They heard about what we were doing with the signature rosé style to unite the industry around and they got very excited,” Beam said. He said while initially, some may have believed the Illinois wines wouldn’t stand out in the competition, that was far from the case. In 2018, the first year the organization entered the contest, all of the Illinois wines placed silver or above and four received gold or double gold award designations, according to Beam. He said when he attempts to sneak in a French wine in blind taste tests and for the casual consumer, they often express they love Illinois wines just as much, if not more, than their European counterparts.

HISTORY AND ECONOMIC IMPACT

The wine industry in Illinois has a storied history dating back to the 1850s, according to Ellis. She adds there was a decline after the Great Depression because vintners began pulling their grapes out of the fields to make way for different crops that would be more beneficial at the time. Ellis said Illinois was boasting 12 wineries in the state in the late ‘70s, but since has boomed to 165 tasting rooms — which are in a combination of vineyards and wineries. About 278,000 individuals made over 900,000 trips to Illinois wineries and vineyards last year, according to the 2019 Illinois Wine Economic Impact Study by John Dunham & Associates, which was commissioned by the IGGVA. “In addition to spending in the wineries and vineyards on wine, food, events, etc., these people spent an estimated $1.09 billion in the Illinois economy,” according to the study. The economic activity created by the visitors directly generates about 5,700 full-time jobs — paying about $167 million in wages and benefits while contributing $381.4 million in economic activity to the state. With the goal in mind to bring awareness to Illinois wineries, the IGGVA launched an interactive map where wineseekers can find tasting rooms close to them, at illinoiswine.com/visit-a-winery. No matter what is thrown at Illinois winemakers — a global pandemic included — Beam said the industry has been welcoming throughout the years and willing to help one another in tough times. “The spirit of our winemakers (...) hasn’t changed a bit,” Beam said. “They’re very open, they’re very sharing, there’s very much a sense of community.”

between Jackson and Union counties, was designated as a American Viticultural Area in December 2006 — the first in Illinois. An AVA is a designated wine grape-growing region in the United States. Wineries in Southern Illinois have also participated in the Illinois Rosé project in bringing together the industry with fellow winemakers across the state. Brandy Nance, executive director of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, said rosé is a good unifier because it’s something everyone can make with the grapes they grow. “This rosé project is really a great way to get together and say how we can make the best rosé possible whether it’s chambourcin, or cabernet franc or another grape from another region,” Nance said. She said throughout Southern Illinois, and within the wine trail especially, there is “a really great group of people that have a giant passion for wine.” Scott Albert, winemaker at Kite Hill Vineyards in Carbondale, said the key

to success in their Flyaway Rosé wine is harvesting grapes earlier in the season because it “preserves acidity” and has more citrus in the aroma versus a later harvest where you “get cherry and strawberry-like characters.” “I think part of the thing about rosé that’s so fun is that it’s really refreshing, and it’s light, and it’s great when it’s hot outside,” Albert said. “I think that earlier picking on it lends itself a little better to that type of wine for that kind of occasion.” Nance said Southern Illinois wineries have brought in people from as far as New Zealand, and the recognition local wineries have received for their rosé in contests has helped. “We are really blessed right here as a region to have a lot of award-winning vineyards and wineries but there is so much to do and so much to see here,” she said. “We’re really making a name for ourselves here in Southern Illinois.”

Taking the different elements of the cancer care model, some of which were located at the hospital, the program is now under one beautiful outpatient roof, nestled against the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge. Here patients receive coordinated cancer treatments in a facility that was created in large part to the generous support of the Southern Illinois community. Also, SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale is a teaching hospital, offering on-the-job training to family medicine residents and sports medicine fellows through Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The hospital, parent company SIH, and SIU School of Medicine collaborate to strengthen and expand rural health opportunities. The entities broke ground on a 40,000 square foot family medicine and teaching facility adjacent to the hospital on June 2018. The facility will open in mid-August 2019.

The Center for Medical Arts is SIH’s multi-specialty physician clinic located on the west side of Carbondale. It includes SIH Medical Group specialists in allergy and immunology; family and internal medicine; geriatrics; rheumatology; pediatrics; urology; ear, nose and throat (ENT) and gastroenterology. The facility features on-site lab and imaging; outpatient surgeries are performed at the adjacent Physicians’ Surgery Center. For conditions requiring immediate attention, patients are welcome at the Walk In Clinic where no appointment is necessary.

ADVANCING SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, WORK, AND DO BUSINESS. OVERVIEW

SI Now serves as a regional hub for economic development and a unified voice for the 17 southern counties of Illinois to advance our region as a great place to live, work, and do business. SI Now’s work focuses on supporting existing businesses, attracting and expanding business, developing our workforce and educational programs, and elevating perceptions of our region. This work has a positive ripple effect for citizens, business owners, communities, and local governments in Southern Illinois. For Southern Illinois citizens, attracting new businesses creates jobs, opportunities for upward economic mobility, and opportunities for new products and services – all of which would improve overall well-being and quality of life. For Southern Illinois business owners, increasing the region’s population and attracting new businesses provides additional clients or patrons as well as an overall increase in the region’s average discretionary spending. Finally, increasing the region’s population expands the tax base for local governments, and in turn, stabilizes or reduces tax burdens on citizens and businesses. Although the return on investment for SI Now’s work may not always be immediate, a strategic regional initiative focused on long-term economic success will ultimately create opportunities for better livelihoods, health, and well-being for us all.

HISTORY

Shortly after assuming the position of Chancellor at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in August 2017, Dr. Carlo Montemagno created the Business Leaders Roundtable. Charged with revitalizing the University, he recognized the critical symbiotic relationship between SIU and the region. The Business Leaders Roundtable convened business owners, economic development professionals, regional elected officials, and SIU leaders to identify key issues affecting SIU and impediments to regional and individual business growth. The group met three times and planned to focus on six priorities at the time of the Chancellor’s passing in October 2018. Continuing the goals of the Business Leaders Roundtable, SI Bridge to the Future was created in 2018 as a regional leadership group consisting of business leaders, community leaders, elected officials, and others to create regional growth and retention strategies through realworld solutions for the southern counties of Illinois. These leaders were successful in creating 2 Carbondale Chamber of Commer 28

a platform for regional collaborative economic development and laying out a foundation and vision for the success of our region – this vision is now pursued through SI Now.

PURPOSE AND VISION SI Now is a regional economic development hub for Southern Illinois that: • Works hand-in-glove with people and organizations within and across Southern Illinois to build inclusive wealth, increase local capacity, and create opportunities for better livelihoods, health, and well-being • Focuses on the people, businesses, local institutions, partnerships and range of natural, built, cultural, intellectual, social, political, and financial resources of the Southern Illinois region • Works to strengthen these critical components and weave them into a system that advances enduring prosperity for all SI Now helps to: • Create alignment throughout Southern Illinois with a unified message and pooled resources to pursue common goals • Create synergy across the 17 counties of Southern Illinois – a win anywhere in Southern Illinois is a win for all of us • Reduce or eliminate silos as obstacles to regional economic development • Achieve benefits of scale as it is more effective to negotiate with outside stakeholders as a region than as one community

SI Now’s vision is to support the region in becoming a thriving, economically diverse environment for business and industry with a growing population, labor force, per capita income and expanding tax base, while elevating an already high quality of life and place.

COLLABORATION

Southern Illinois has a strong business community that is innovative, community-minded, and resilient – from Greg Cook co-founding Cook Portable Warehouses as an idea to get rid of excess materials and turning it into a multimillion-dollar corporation – to Greg Sprehe’s Com-Pac International manufacturing flexible packaging products that are used in space by NASA – to the Simonds family operating E.T. Simonds Construction Company for 75 years and improving our region’s access to commerce through expanded interstates and highways. These are just a few examples of the countless business owners who have thrived in Southern Illinois. Listening to what the Southern Illinois business community needs from an economic development initiative is core to the way that SI Now develops strategy. 1 Rural Development Hub: Strengthening America’s Rural Innovation Infrastructure Community Strategies Group - the Aspen Institute, 2019.

SI Now also collaborates closely with area economic development organizations as implementation partners and leverages assets and resources to reach common goals. Close attention is paid to avoiding duplication of efforts as SI Now seeks to identify and fill voids while accelerating progress. The diagram below provides a visual depiction of how SI Now serves as a regional hub and connector to advance identified goals among key stakeholders in our region. SI NOW STRUCTURE SI Now includes an overall Committee, Advisory Board, and Business Leaders Council comprised of area business owners, in addition to three task forces focused on Business Growth & Development, Education & Workforce Development, and Marketing Southern Illinois. NOW is the time for Southern Illinois leaders to come together as a region to harness our joint assets and strengths, pursue high yield opportunities, and overcome the threats that aim to deteriorate our region’s economic success.
