SALUTE TO UNIONS

Labor Day to showcase working families

O

n this Labor Day, we celebrate the achievements of working people in Macon County and across the state of Illinois. All workers want dignity and respect at work, and a fair share of what we produce. A union contract is the single best tool to ensure workers — all workers — have safe working conditions and earn a fair wage. Last year, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the most significant worker empowerment legislation LAMARCUS since the Great Depression. WILLIAMS The passage of that piece of legislation in the Senate, the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, is critical to ensure the voices of working people are heard and our nation’s economy works for all of us — not just the wealthy few. The PRO Act will empower workers to exercise our freedom to organize and negotiate for better wages and working conditions. It will remove archaic barriers to organizing, increase worker protections and strengthen the institutions that hold corporations accountable. It will repeal the “right to work” laws that lead to lower wages, fewer benefits and more dangerous workplaces. Decatur Trades & Labor Assembly is committed to raising awareness about the PRO Act and encouraging workers to organize into unions for a better way of life. Our labor council has been making great strides to strategically engage workers in membership opportunities.

Earlier this year, in partnership with the Decatur Building & Construction Trades council and the Community Foundation of Macon County, we unveiled the Michael T. Carrigan Solidarity Scholarship to help workers on the path to union membership. This scholarship — named after former Illinois AFL-CIO president and IBEW 146 member Michael Carrigan — will help workers looking to enroll in building trades apprenticeship programs. The scholarship will assist in purchasing tools, boots, GED classes and much more. An apprentice guide was also created to help applicants decide which trade is right for them. It includes a description of the work, application information, contact information and a guide for earned wages in each trade. It is our hope that access to this information will employ a diverse workforce ready to learn the skilled trades needed to keep our community growing strong. We continue to acknowledge and appreciate essential workers who are working to stay safe while keeping customers safe. Our members continue to build things, provide service and work with management to come back strong in the after-effects of the pandemic. We support them and encourage them in their efforts. As we celebrate unions let us be reminded of their value and worth. Through the years, unions have bargained to create the 8-hour workday, weekends, paid days off, vacation pay, health insurance benefits, pensions, and much more. Union members are, first and foremost, citizens of our community.

The Senate is considering the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, the most significant worker empowerment legislation since the Great Depression. We are committed to making it a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire. We invite you to join us as we host the annual Labor Day parade in downtown Decatur at 10 a.m. We will be showcasing union workers throughout Macon and surrounding counties. Following the parade, we will host our annual picnic for union members and their families and will

be distributing $15,000 in grants to local charity from our We Are One Community fund. We encourage you to join in our celebration and ask that you thank a union member this weekend. Lamarcus Williams is president of the Decatur Trades & Labor Assembly.

SALUTE TO UNIONS

Tradition of giving continues

We Are One Community awarding $15,080 to local charities MATEUSZ JANIK

mateusz.janik@lee.net‌

DECATUR — For almost 40 years, Good Samaritan Inn has served lunch to those in need. “A meal at the Good Samaritan Inn is more than a meal,” said Nicky Besser, Good Samaritan’s executive director. “There are some people that need it to sustain them, but even for many of our patrons, our meals turn into dollars that they’re saving that they can spend on other essential services.” Coming off a year when more people are in need and traditional funding opportunities were strained, We are One Community is once again stepping in to help. Good Samaritan is the recipient of $2,000 from the group. The charity fund, built on the tradition of collective giving and philanthropy among work-

ing union families, will mark Labor Day with the distributing of $15,080 to 21 local organizations. The donations will be presented during the annual picnic following the Labor Day parade on Sept. 6, which runs through downtown Decatur starting at 10 a.m. Former Macon County Sheriff Tony Brown is this year’s parade marshal. The awards presentation will be at 1 p.m. at the Large Pavilion in Fairview Park.

“Our dream for the We Are One Community is to have $100,000 in the community foundation and to be able to use the interests to give out more grants,” said Amy Rueff, the funds chairwoman. “I

mean there’s such potential for us to raise so much money.” The funds come from local union members, who participate in fundraising campaigns or make donations through payroll deductions throughout the year. The donor-advised fund is housed at The Community Foundation and the advisory board commits that 100% of all individual donations go directly to local services. They can do this because local unions cover the 1% administration fee and interest is reinvested to the fund, Rueff said. Rueff said their labor advisory board decides which local charity will receive a grant and how much that grant is worth. Along with Good Samaritan Inn, other organizations who will receive grants from the fund include Shemilah’s Outreach

Center, Old Kings Orchard Community Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Illinois and Decatur Power Tumblers. Rueff said most of the time grants go repeat recipients that they know have an impact on the community as a whole. Like The Good Samaritan Inn, Macon County Meals on Wheels is a repeat recipient and also will be awarded $2,000. Meals on Wheels provides meals to senior citizens and other homebound individuals who cannot cook for themselves.

Greg Fritzgerald, a senior services supervisor with Catholic Charities, which oversees the meal program, said it takes a “fairly large” budget to operate the meal program especially when they served close to 95,000 meals last year and continue to serve an average of around 428 meals a day. “It’ll be put toward purchasing meals and getting these meals out to the people that need it,” Fritzgerald said. “There’s a great community effort to make sure that these meals get to these people.”

hile unions are the leading voice for workers in the workplace, their members also volunteer their time and talents to make their hometowns a better place to live, work and play. Local non-profit groups are among the thankful recipients. The Herald & Review asked the leaders of these organizations to share stories about some of the ways local unions have assisted them with their missions. We are fortunate to have groups in Decatur whose members step up to volunteer their time and talents for worthwhile projects in our community. The Decatur Area Convention & Visitors Bureau has partnered with the local building and construction trades to complete several of these necessary improvements. We worked to bring a national softball tournament to Rotary Park a few years ago and desperately needed to find a way to build covers over all ten dugouts. The Decatur Park District provided the materials, and the trade groups donated all their

They chose 50 of our local foster children assigned to CASA, and with lists of sizes and wants/needs, the Local 505 firefighters, shopped and purchased many gifts for each child. Our CASA kiddos, CASA volunteers, CASA staff all felt very fortunate that our kids were the recipients of such kind hearts during the holidays.

Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity has had quite a bit of help from several of the major unions helping us with our last house builds. The carpenter union found us a guy to assist in the oversight of the build, and the plumbers and other unions were also involved in the process. A lot of this cooperation came through working with District 61 and the vocational building class starting back up. It was working with the students that the unions really helped us out.

Decatur Trades & Labor Assembly has been working closely with Baby TALK leadership to determine building material and labor needs to assemble baby play platforms, climbing structures, toddler pull up bars and tricycle ramps for the four playgrounds at our new facility. We are so grateful for their guidance as we complete these important outdoor spaces that will be accessible not only for enrolled Baby TALK families but also the community at large when we host special events.
