Morton Pumpkin fest is ‘golden’ Band Day a Twin City tradition for 50 years LEIGH ANN BROWN

‌MORTON — There is a “golden” reason to visit the 2016 Morton Pumpkin Festival that runs from Sept. 14-17 in the “Pumpkin Capital of the World.” The Central Illinois fall tradition is marking 50 years with all sorts of events and entertainment. Official opening night, on Sept. 14, begins with the traditional cutting of the vine while attendees help send send bubbles into the sky. The evening also includes Morton High School singing groups and the Pumpkin Princess Pageant. The stage then is turned over to local talent for Pumpkin Idol Jr. and a performance by Cousin Eddie. The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales will be downtown at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 15 after the Kiddie Parade that welcomes children ages infant through first grade wearing costumes honoring the “Golden Pumpkin” theme. Friday night brings back the Lip Sync Battle contest, followed by last year’s finalist on “The Voice,” Keith Semple, taking the stage with his band. A fireworks show follows. On Saturday morning, the 10K run or 2-mile walk starts the morning off right (enjoy a pumpkin doughnut at the finishing line). Celebrating memories and dedication to the festival for 50 years will bring together generations during Saturday’s parade. Also that day: the Pumpkin Recipe Challenge, the Pumpkin Pie Eating Competition, the Pumpkin Weigh-Off, and the Pumpkin Decorating Contest. And, don’t miss the artists and

The Morton Pumpkin Festival will again feature one of the best carnivals you will find anywhere, courtesy of Big M Amusements that has been at the festival for more than 40 years. For the adventurous souls, check out the festival from new heights, climbing 35 feet to zip line through the festival grounds! For the milder thrill seekers, check out the Imagination Station from the Peoria Playhouse on Saturday. The Morton Pumpkin Festival is made possible with the help of more than 2,000 volunteers, who will help serve more than 70,000 visitors. Just since 2011, the Morton Chamber of Commerce has given more than $410,000 of proceeds from the Pumpkin Festival to local nonprofit organizations and in support of many community projects.

The festival started in 1967, but took on greater significance in 1978, when the governor signed a proclamation that Morton was the “Pumpkin Capital of the World” because 85 percent of the world’s canned pumpkin is processed in Morton at the Libby’s plant. All that history and memories can be found this year in the Commemorative 50th Anniversary book that will be available at the Pumpkin Store and online at Amazon. In fact, Libby’s and the Morton Chamber of Commerce continue to be lead sponsors of the festival honoring the harvest and production of pumpkins in the Morton area. For more information about the Morton Pumpkin Festival, visit www.mortonpumpkinfestival.org. Brown is CEO and executive director of the Morton Economic Development Council.

‌NORMAL — One sure sign of autumn in the Twin Cities is the arrival of Band Day at Illinois State University. For the past 50 years, Illinois State University’s Bid Red Marching Machine has hosted the State of Illinois Invitational High School Marching Band Championship at Hancock Stadium. This year’s edition will begin at 7 a.m. Oct. 22 with 45 of the best and most accomplished high school marching bands from Illinois competing. The preliminary round will continue until 6:30 p.m. with the finals beginning an hour later and continuing until around 10:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the gate. All the bands will compete in various classes in the preliminary contest with the top 14 bands advancing to the finals competition and challenging for the title of grand champion. Band Day will bring roughly 6,000 high school students to ISU’s campus. Family, friends and other supporters add another 3,000 to the sudden influx of people in the community.

Judges for the contest are some of the best in the marching band profession, who are brought to ISU from across the country. The bands, representing all parts of Illinois, build on their marching season to this daylong competition. Those attending will see some of the hardest working youth in our state and community. The performances will demonstrate the high levels of creativity each band program brings to the competition. Besides watching a day full of top-level high school band performances, those in attendance also will get see two performances of ISU’s Big Red Marching Machine that will play twice for the crowd and the high school band members, at 6:30 and 10:30 p.m. There are many current members of the Big Red Marching Machine who competed in this same contest wen they were in high school, and organizers hope there are future members in crowd who will make the choice to attend ISU and be active members of the Big Red Marching Machine. Smith is director of athletic bands at Illinois State University.

Downtown celebrations a nod to fall abundance TRICIA STILLER

‌ LOOMINGTON — Downtown B Bloomington celebrates the onset of autumn with whimsy, celebration and the spoils of the harvest. During September, we offer the Eat Local Challenge! During the month, when farmers’ yields are at their peak, we want you to enjoy the finest, freshest foods available. All you need to do is commit to spending $20 a week on local foods. That’s it. You can learn more on the Central Illinois Eat Local Challenge Facebook Page, where you’ll find

recipes, meal plans, and a calendar of local events. The fall floral showcase takes over our Adopt-a-Pots program throughout the district, adding fall color and traditional décor of the season to the downtown landscape. This sets the tone for the arrival of fall crops to our award-winning Farmers’ Market on the square each Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. until noon, through the end of October. Speaking of October, our annual Loft showcase, the Tour de Metro will kick off the month as part of

our First Friday Event that will also include an art scavenger hunt and of course, other special activities at our shops and galleries. First Fridays, started in 2008, is a monthly celebration of downtown with extended business hours, art, music, shopping, dining specials and much more. Also in October, ghosts, goblins and superheroes of all ages are invited to Trick or Treat Downtown from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 28. Downtown merchants look forward to this fun family event each year.

And costumes are encouraged at our last farmers market on Oct. 29 — the annual “Howl at the Market” that provides all trick-or-treaters with “boo bucks” they can use to redeem for a special fall treat. In November, we focus special attention on our thriving arts scene. The McLean County Arts Center’s annual Holiday Treasures Exhibition and Art Show opens Nov. 3 with an opening reception from 5 to 8, and on Nov. 4, the Around the Corner Art Walk

brings you into our downtown art galleries for a meet-and -greet with local artists, and opportunities to do your holiday shopping for friends, family, or even start your own collection! The Indoor Thanksgiving Market returns to U.S. Cellular Coliseum on Nov. 19. This special market provides you with the very best locally sourced foods for your Thanksgiving table. Stiller is executive director of the Downtown Bloomington Association.

Autumn months mean fall fun in uptown Normal JOE TULLEY

‌ ORMAL — When the N Redbirds return to uptown Normal, it means one thing: Fall is just around the corner and exciting things are happening. A host of returning fall events, complimented by a new addition to the calendar, promise to make this fall season one of our most fun. Uptown businesses have been busy planning their first autumn shopping event: Mimosa Morning from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 17. Shoppers are invited to visit uptown shops and boutiques to enjoy a variety of specials and sales, all while enjoying complimentary sips and snacks. Later in September, the Children’s Discovery Museum

will again host its annual Uptown Block Party. Held each year on East Beaufort Street as part of the Worldwide Day of Play, youngsters of all ages can expect a variety of activities, including booths, a touch-a -truck experience, bike rodeo and lively entertainment. The fun happens from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 24. That same Saturday brings a new event, hosted by Medici and co-sponsored by the Normal Rotary, as the block party is winding down. The Medici Oktoberfest runs from 2 to 10 p.m. on North Street directly in front of the restaurant and will offer many of the traditional trappings fans might expect: beer, street food and live mu-

sic, including an authentic polka band. Moving into October, our friends at Illinois State University celebrate their annual homecoming on Oct. 8. Uptown Normal is the perfect place to bring the family to watch the parade that steps off at 10 a.m. and features community and student entries. October’s signature event wraps up the month as we close the uptown streets for an evening of fun — and safe — trick-or-treating. Treat Feast is one of uptown’s longest-running events, and is an opportunity for the business community to give back to their friends and patrons for all their support.

The streets are closed from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 27, as spooky ghosts and ghouls don their Halloween best to visit uptown businesses. While most of the events

held in uptown are free, some, such as the Medici Oktoberfest, do ask for a small donation. If you have questions about hours or details of any uptown event, visit Up-

townNormal.com, at facebook.com/UptownNormal, or email jtulley@normal.org. Tulley is manager of uptown Normal.

BCPA sets exciting fall schedule including magic, films BCPA STAFF

‌ LOOMINGTON — Temps are B dropping and the leaves have begun to change, which means fall has really fall-en. With the cooler weather, it’s time to come inside and what better place to visit than the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts. The BCPA has a full calendar of events to entertain the whole family. On Sept. 16, we celebrate with “A Toast To 10: The Tenth Anniversary Event” as local actors, dancers and musicians salute the first decade of the BCPA. The following night, Peter Oyloe and the Hank Band take the main stage to celebrate the music and poetry of Hank Williams Sr. Our final production on celebration weekend is a performance of “Love Letters,” featuring Walt Willey, seen in last season’s “An Evening with Wild Bill,” and BCPA Director Tina Salamone. There will be a postshow meet-and-greet and reception

PR‌

The BCPA will screen the silent film classic, “Phantom of the Opera,” on Oct. 25. following the play. The whole family can plan a trip to the BCPA on Oct. 7 to see the just-added show, “The Amazing Max.” PBS Kids describes it as “an awesome and hilarious live magic

show.” This is a high-energy, interactive and all-around silly show for young and old. Comedy and politics go hand in hand and the BCPA has landed a funny show on the eve of this year’s

presidential race. The Second City in partnership with Slate Magazine present “Unelectable You” on Oct. 26. This political parody will be mocking every candidate and the whole political process in a show where the audience gets in on the act. As Halloween approaches, it’s time to get our spooky on with our silent film screening of the “Phantom of the Opera” on Oct. 25. This 1925 classic stars Lon Chaney, Sr. in the title role and will have live organ accompaniment by Dennis Scott. A few days later, on Oct. 28, the four-part harmonies and upbeat songs of The Oak Ridge Boys are center stage. Their sound has spawned dozens of country hits and a number one pop smash, earning them Grammy, Dove, CMA and ACM awards. Lovers of stand-up comedy can rejoice as national headlining comedian Dan St. Paul brings his

show “What’s Funny After 50?” to the BCPA on Nov. 13. Instead of moaning about getting older, St. Paul has developed a hilarious show that leaves baby boomers and the senior set rolling in the aisles. Another fun family-friendly field trip could be catching “Elf The Broadway Musical” on Nov. 14. Based on the beloved 2003 New Line Cinema hit, “Elf” is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Call the BCPA ticket office at 309-434-2777 or go online at artsblooming.org for more details on any of our fall shows, or to get gift certificates to give to family and friends. You can also follow the BCPA on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to get behind the scenes information on new shows being added to the schedule.
