South African safari Story and Photos by Deanna Frautschi
W
e never planned to go on an African safari. Most of our travel is in the United States, and there’s plenty to see here. But when a safari trip to view South Africa’s wildlife popped up as one of our local charity’s auction items, we decided to go for it. We were not disappointed. Our South African Zulu nyala wildlife reserve visit in December (the start of their summer) included six days with two photo safaris each day. Our biggest surprise was how close we got to elephants, cheetahs, zebras, lions, rhinos, hippos and giraffes, among other large animals. We were just 20 feet away from many of these beautiful mammals in their natural savanna habitats. They did not seem to be disturbed by the jeep-like vehicle we rode in, but we were given strict instructions not to lean out too far from the vehicle and to keep quiet when asked to do so.
Zebras, rhinos and warthogs feeding together.
Up close and personal
We were not frightened as our very knowledgeable guide Ruan (age 25) bumped eight of us over the rough dirt and rock roads to view at least 20 large mammals and many smaller ones. We did have one almost too close and personal encounter, which started when three hippos on the road in front of us were confronted by three elephants who quickly emerged on the same road behind us. As the elephants moved next to us, we were told to keep q u i e t s i n c e Ruan had nowhere to move the jeep.

Suddenly, the lead elephant raised its trunk and roared. Fortunately, the hippos backed o to a watering hole. Had the elephant stepped to the side during this challenge, our jeep likely would have been overturned. One of our favorite experiences was seeing a young impala (small antelope) give birth in the bush. The mom then nurtured and cleaned the baby until it got up on its legs within 20 minutes. To be able to move fast is critical to survival in the wild since predators (leopards, cheetahs or lions) may lurk nearby. This was an amazing oncein-a-lifetime experience for Al Bedell and I. The
worst parts were the 15-hour flights each way from Atlanta to Johannesburg and back again. The best part was seeing and learning about the amazing animals that inhabit South African reserves like Zulu nyala.

Bill Flick Your February 2016 BNI (Bloomington-Normal Index): We love to eat: It’s no myth that Bloomington-Normal is a town that loves to dine out. In fact, of America’s 917 regional restaurant markets, it is ranked as the top “non-tourist” town in all of America for “sales per restaurant.” So says Restaurant Business, considered the “bible” of references in the eating biz. The average restaurant in B-N, it says, makes $1,197,796 in sales per year. Outside of Hawaii and nevada, both tourist-attracting states, B-N is No. 1 in the U.S. for making money at a restaurant.
A puff piece: next time you bite into a nestle’s Crunch bar, chances are that the puffy rice was processed in Gridley. Kerry Sweet Ingredients ships out trailers of the stuff every day.
Only motorcade glimpse: Many U.S. presidents – either while campaigning or retired -- have been in Bloomingtonnormal but only Bill Flick Columnist one serving U.S. president is believed to have been in a motorcade that rolled through the Twin Cities: President Lyndon Baines Johnson in July 1965, in town for the funeral of world diplomat Adlai Stevenson II. In fact, attached here is a blurry but memorable snapshot taken by Jan Baker of Bloomington at the corner of Main and East Grove, as Johnson’s entourage sped from the Unitarian Church on Emerson to Evergreen Cemetery along South Main. The picture is blurry because — only a year and a half after John F. Kennedy was gunned down in a

motorcade — drivers of presidents learned to not drive slowly through a town anymore. 5 cents worth: Although Central Illinois farmers supply the corn that ends up in your breakfast bowl, don’t get too excited. There is only about 5 cents worth of corn in a box of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, says the cereal maker. The very last state building in Illinois to be dedicated by Gov. Rod Blagojevich, before he was impeached, indicted, convicted and began serving a 14-year sentence in federal prison on a corruption charge: The Illinois State University Alumni Center along north Main, near Raab Road. It was an Eagle grocery store before it became a part of ISU. They thought he was a ‘hamburglar’: When Gus Belt opened the world’s first Steak ’n Shake here in 1934 and offered a 10 steakburgers for a dollar special, folks said he was nuts to charge that much. Best deal in B-N back then: Baker’s, downtown. They offered 22 hamburgers for $1. Not in our town: It is against the law in normal to make your own soap. You are now warned. Hashtags, websites and weddings Story by Molly Hartrup Photo by Deidre Lynn Photography
P
lanning a wedding can be a daunting task – from tracking down a dream wedding gown to making the guest list, and all the arrangements in between. Some brides-to-be might hire a wedding planner to help organize their big day, or they might find Pinterest a useful tool to keep track of ideas they may want to incorporate. However, one local bride used a free online website and smart phone application called The Knot to help plan her wedding. Lauren Davis, a recent Illinois State University graduate, said having her own personal wedding website not only made it easier when planning her wedding, but also made everything easier for their guests – from booking hotels to referencing their registry. “It gave the idea that our wedding celebration was more than just one day,” said Davis. “We
Lauren’s blog has a wedding video link were able to share our story with everyone who visited the site, as well as give a shout out to each of our bridal party members.” She added that using the URL on their wedding invitations made it much easier to provide their guests with information – and the guests could even RSVP through the website, which saved on stamps and paper. “not a week went by that our parents’ friends didn’t compliment our website or express their excitement,” said Davis. “One family friend was particularly excited, and wants to make a website for his daughter.”

Lauren and Jordan’s wedding website Although she did a lot of her own research for vendors, The Knot has a catalog of wedding vendors including reviews. The site also has budgeting tips, destination wedding venue ideas, and nearly any tool a bride needs to plan her big day. Davis also noted how easy the site is to use. “The Knot is extremely user friendly, but it does take a little exploring to figure out all of the tools that are included,” she said. There are several options for free wedding websites, such as www.mywedding.com, www.ewedding.com, and www.zankyou.com. They all offer very similar platforms including budgeting, vendors, registry, and RSVP options. There are other sites that allow a bride and groom to build their own website, with a free initial setup cost, but then charge add-on fees for premiere features. Another trend when planning a wedding is to create a hash tag. Lauren and Jordan chose the hash tag #thejune20wedding. “The purpose of a wedding hash tag is truly to give viewers the ability to see all tweets and instagram posts related to your wedding in one feed,” she said. “I have a bachelor’s degree in public relations so our wedding hash tag was particularly important to me.”
Davis also created a blog following the wedding called thejunetwentyblog. com. “The blog is an online space that documents the lifestyle of us, and the day that started it all was June 20, 2015,” she said. Her target audience is brides, newlyweds, and young adult women. She shares what it is like to be a newlywed, recipes, favorite things, and even a link to her wedding video. When sharing advice to newly engaged brides-to-be, Davis said she could write a book. “Above all else, the piece of advice I would give is take a step back from Pinterest, magazines, and pop-culture,” she said. “Set aside time with your fiancé to talk about what style of wedding will reflect the two of you as a couple.” She also added, “Vendors book two years in advance sometimes, dresses can take up to nine months to arrive, and there are only so many Chiavari chairs in Central Illinois.” To see Lauren and Jordan’s wedding website, visit www.theknot.com/ wedding/Ulrich-Davis. TEN THINGS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT VARICOSE VEINS
A
ccording to the American College of Phlebology, more than 25 million Americans suffer from some form of venous disease, including varicose and spider veins. Other experts put that number as high as 80 million. The good news is that advancements in the understanding of vein diseases and disorders have led to less invasive, office-based treatments that offer relief to everyone suffering from varicose and spider veins. Here are 10 things every woman should know about varicose and spider veins.
1. Almost half of the people with varicose veins have a family history. 2. If both parents had varicose veins, your chances of developing them are close to 90 percent. 3. It is estimated that half of the U.S. population over age 50 has varicose veins. 4. Men have varicose veins, too. About 55 percent of women will develop varicose veins compared to 45 percent of men. However, men are less likely to seek treatment. 5. Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic problem. They can cause leg pain, fatigue, swelling, itching, heaviness, restless leg syndrome and general discomfort. 6. Untreated varicose veins can lead to health complications including leg ulcers. 7. Pregnancy can lead to varicose veins because of the increased pressure against the inferior vena cava, the main vein that moves blood from the lower part of the body, and hormonal changes.
8. Exercise and weight control are the best ways to lessen the severity of varicose veins. 9. Aging increases your risk for varicose veins. 10. Sitting with your legs crossed or wearing high heels does not cause varicose veins. But, standing or sitting for long periods can lead to development of varicose veins. If you think you might have varicose veins, call The Vein Specialists at (309) 862-4000 to schedule a Consultation with one of our physicians or request an appointment online at www.ILveins.com. We have convenient locations in Bloomington, eka, Peru, Springfield and Str Eureka, Streator.

new Bloomington business is marking its grand opening in a big way: a mass wedding of 20 couples during Valentine’s Day weekend. Yes, I’ll Marry You!, owned by Bloomington residents Sandy Zukoski and David Kagel, opened in 2015. The business offers personalized service, including officiating, at weddings, funerals, celebrations of life, house blessings, hospital/hospice visits and more. The mass ceremony will be Feb. 13 at the Lincoln Springs Center, Bloomington. Participating couples can personalize their day with individualized attire and table theme. The lucky winner of a drawing at the event will receive their service and wedding package free from Yes, I’ll Marry You! Couples, who need to contact the business for specific pricing, will receive an officiant for the exchange of vows, a decorated venue for the ceremony and reception, flowers for the brides and grooms, and a table for 10 (including the wedding couple). Each couple will be able to dance their first dance to a song of their choosing. Participants and their guests will enjoy an elaborate dessert bar and each couple will take home an anniversary cake. Champagne for toasting the couples will be on every table and each couple will receive photos of their special day. The idea behind the business is simple: “We’ll provide secular or non-secular services; we want to meet the needs of our community. Whether it is in a mass ceremony, or a couple would like for us to perform a private ceremony at their venue — no matter where that venue might be — their home, a hall, the place they met, or a place they find beautiful, we’ll provide them with our service,” Kagel said. Katie Latta – Your Wedding Superhero Story by Tricia Stiller
L
ooking back on her childhood, Katie Latta realizes she always had an interest in business. “I loved when we would have garage sales,” she laughs. “I loved to set them up, meet people, and make sales. I guess my life was already in the cards.” Latta, owner of Churchill’s Formal Wear in historic downtown Bloomington, took an indirect route to what she describes as “the greatest job in the world.” “I was on my way to becoming a dental hygienist,” she explains with a laugh. She started working at Churchill’s as a parttime seamstress in 2008 to help pay for her studies. It didn’t take long for her to realize she had accidentally discovered where she was meant to be. “I get to help people enjoy the best moments of their lives,” she explains. “I love what I do every day.” She loves it so much that when it came time for her boss to retire in 2011, she purchased the business, and now, along with her mother, Joanie Phillips, handles every aspect of day-to-day operations. During busier times, it becomes a full family affair, as her sister, niece and husband, Shawn, all roll up their sleeves and get the job done. “It’s important to all of us that your big day is exactly the way you envisioned it. We’ll do whatever it takes to help,” she shares. She’s had some close calls with nervous grooms who needed last-minute alterations, or forgot their cummerbund, and she’s been able to come to rescue, saving the day. “I’ve seen a lot, and I’ve learned a lot,” she shares. “I can help navigate t h e planning process to make sure no detail is missed for you. It’s an h o n o r for me to help people create your memories.”
With a keen understanding that in retail there is very little down time, Latta has immersed herself in learning and honing her trade by attending industry trade shows and participating in bridal fairs. “You’re always searching for the next thing, for the next customer, and knowing in advance what their needs will be,” she explains. “Trends are always changing. You have to stay on top of it!” Latta determined that she needed to expand her focus a bit from the top-ofthe-line men’s line she carries to better serve the women that accompany those men she makes look so dapper. She has recently added a women’s formalwear line, Lady Churchill’s Dress Boutique, which enables her to assist both the bride and the groom, along with full wedding parties. She also offers free wedding invitations to the happy couples, as well as 10 percent off each dress when you register your wedding with Churchill’s. Lady Churchill’s, featuring the designer line from The House of Wu, is Central Illinois’ only “create your own style” dress boutique. Ladies can choose their own design, select fabrics (chiffon, taffeta, lace) and details like jewels, sequins, ribbon, and more. Lady Churchill’s is
Churchill’s Formal Wear owner, Katie Latta located on the lower level of Churchill’s, 422 n. Main St. In addition to weddings, Latta can make you look your best for any formal occasion. And the Omar goes to… Story by Jonell Kehias, Photos by Carlos T. Miranda
T
he Golden Globes had Ricky Gervais but the Omars had Karen and Tony DeAngelis. The Omars are an award presented within the One nighters II play group, now in its 24th year. Started by Bob and Julie Dobski, this group has grown to about 20 couples with a five-year waiting list. The very first play was held at a suite in the old Holiday Inn. Today, most of the plays are held at Little Jewels on Oakland Avenue. Usually, the group produces four plays a year; however, this year, only three were produced due to the massive production Omar winners: Cindy Segobiano, Paula and Mike Weiland, Mark Segobiano, of the group’s first play aimed specifically Julie Dobski, Doretta and Tom Herr, Karen DeAngelis at families, ”The Wizard of Oz.” Only three practices are allowed for each play and the group makes its own sets and costumes. Lines are read from a script because one week isn’t long enough to memorize lines. Every play has an intermission where a full meal is served to the 100 or so audience members made up of friends and family of the play group. After the play, dessert is served. One nighters II plays run the gamut from drama to musicals to farce, but the group’s forte is comedy. Things like missed cues, props that don’t work or forgotten lines just add to the fun of the production and the actors roll with any hiccups like Broadway pros. Every December the group votes by secret ballot for winners of the coveted Omar.
And this year’s winners are:
Karen DeAngelis, Best Character Actress, The Wizard of Oz Mark Segobiano, Best Character Actor, The Wizard of Oz Doretta Herr, Best Supporting Actress, The Wizard of Oz Don Myers, Best Supporting Actor, The Wizard of Oz Julie Dobski, Jan Francois (tie), Best Actress (Julie for Nana’s Naughty Knickers, Jan for The Wizard of Oz) Joe Van Valey, Best Actor, The Wizard of Oz Paula and Mike Weiland, Best Play, The Wizard of Oz Paula and Mike Weiland, Best Set, The Wizard of Oz
Emcees for the evening, Tony and Karen DeAngelis

Wedding Trends 2016 What’s hot and what’s not Story by Jonell Kehias
M
ike Pohlman of Palace Events, Bloomington, knows a few things about weddings. In 2015, his company planned and coordinated 38 nuptials and provided rentals for more than 250 weddings. Of all the couples who chose Ewing Cultural Center as a venue last year, Palace Events did every single wedding. Reviews from happy customers who have worked with Pohlman are interspersed with the phrases “stunning,” “awesome,” “top of the line,” “amazing” and “exceeded expectations.” We asked Pohlman to give us his unique insight on what brides will be looking for in 2016. Here’s what he had to say:
Big-picture trends: • Couples in their 40s and 50s tying (or re-tying) the knot • Same-sex weddings
Decorating trends: • Wall draping • Bringing the outdoors indoors with forest-themed weddings inside hotel banquet rooms • Sequined tablecloths remain strong, however, regular floor-length polyester tablecloths are also popular in simple ivory/off-white with a pop of color with napkins. • natural wood harvest tables with a lace table runner and charger plates is trending heavily this year

February 2016 — Limited
• Chiavari chairs and X-back chairs seem to be more in demand than chair covers. Rouge chair covers in different colors are also popular.
Hot colors: Gold, coral, blush, navy, ivory and more gold are the trending hues
Tenting trends: In one word, “unique.” Think custom decor with draping, lighting and natural forest hangings The clearspan, clear-top tent continues to grow in popularity as well.
Let’s talk budget: If a bride is on a budget, the first thing to do is to set a budget — meaning a bottom dollar of all expenses for the wedding. It sounds simple, but I’ve seen brides start spending on things they think they need before establishing an actual dollar amount for their budget. Once there is that bottom line figure, then I help the bride break down needs and wants and what is possible. The main thing is for the bride to figure out what is most important to her. Venue selection is a critical piece of the budget. Some brides find they have more “needs” than their budget will allow. Therefore, they are switching over to a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres-style wedding reception. They are still able
to have some tables set in a sit-down wedding style, but there is more of a focus on ambiance, atmosphere and flow of the event.
Music: Many couples still want a band, but the good ones can take up a large chunk of the budget. DJs have proven, through the tech wave, that they are still very important to wedding receptions. While you can hook up an iPod to speakers, I wouldn’t recommend it. DJs act as conductors of the event. They control the execution, transition and flow of the reception because they are the announcer of the wedding. If you want anything about your wedding to be formal (audio for ceremony, first dance, cutting of the cake, speeches, etc), then you need to hire a professional DJ/audio technician. Don’t cut that corner.
Food for thought: According to Liz Coon, special events and banquet manager at Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano, “Everyone wants something different. Plated is definitely moving to
the back burner while having an amazing cocktail party is becoming much more in demand. Buffets are requested and preferred more commonly than family style, but both are popular and always trendy choices. Opening a hosted bar before wedding ceremonies is becoming an interesting trend this year that many wedding guests are sure to love.” For information, go to www.palaceevent.com, email Mike Pohlman at mike@palaceevent.com or call 309-830-0814.

Just for Tonight Must this be the summing up of life? Have we missed the Mozart symphony distorted by the dust on the fan, the spoiled food in the fridge, the cobwebs in the corner? Whence the golden apples? Just for tonight may we go back to our youth, picking up the phone— the soft voice that spoke. Just for tonight may the smells of sirloin, steak and Zinfandel linger lightly in the air. Just for tonight may we say, “I love you deeply, and I always will.” Just for tonight may we listen for the gift of bell-chimes tingling in a touch or glance. Just for tonight may we feel the rhythmic rise and fall of each heart-beat as we lay in bed.

The reason for the season Photos and story by Susie Newby
F
or many years I and a small group of girlfriends have been getting together on the first Thursday of the month for socializing. In 2008, Susie decided that instead of spending money on food and drinks, the money could be put to better use by buying gifts for the Brotherhood Tree. So for the December 2008 gathering, I hosted six girlfriends at my house. I provided all of the wrapping supplies and snacks and they brought the gifts. We had a lot of fun wrapping everything together. This year, the group has grown to 15 and the generosity was overwhelming, with more than 100 gifts provided! My husband and I then box up the gifts and take them to the Armory and this year we also delivered gifts directly to families.

This type of unique property becomes available infrequently. On 18.3 acres of which 6.81 is tillable, but does not have to be farmed, can be used for most livestock or other uses. Includes a private acre and a half pond with fishing dock. Lots of trees. Most of the property has been left natural for an abundance of wild life. Walking trails can be mowed. The home appears to be an A frame but it is not. All walls are drywalled and are square, the A part is great storage on either side of the second floor. Agent Interest.
Change to: Must see the inside of this truly incredible home with over 5,000 finished sq. ft. Modeled after a home in Sicily. Travertine tile and beautiful wood floors, gourmet kitchen, Butler pantries, abundance of living space up and down. Huge bonus/bedroom upstairs. Gorgeous master suite. Private back yard with incredible landscaping. Oversized garage. Energy efficient home with 5 bedrooms and 4 1/2 baths. This home is truly a MUST SEE!
