Fall into Funks Grove
Story and Photos by Deanna Frautschi
O
ctober is a wonderful time to visit historic Funks Grove. Just 15 minutes south of Bloomington on historic Route 66, this is the largest remaining prairie grove in Illinois. Settled in the 1820s by the Funks and the Stubblefields, the area boasts white oaks, bur oaks and sugar maple trees. The Funk family began to harvest and sell “sirup” here commercially in 1891. The “sirup” harvesting continues today with education about the process playing a key role today. Nineteen acres of land were dedicated in 1985 as the Funks Grove Nature Preserve. With the addition of Sugar Grove Nature Center in 2004, the area is a natural gem offering plenty of opportunity for hiking, observing nature and participating in educational programs.
Fall Out
October is the perfect time to take a drive down Route 66 and turn on to Funks Grove’s shady, color changing rural road which will be leaf laden with fall’s

Road into Funks Grove colors. Look up and marvel at the trees as the sun glints through their yellow and orange leaves. Put your car windows down and breathe deeply of fall’s earthy smells. Better yet, get out of the car and walk through the woods to glimpse the chapel in the trees. Stop to meditate and give thanks for this wondrous place in the woods that all can visit and enjoy. For more information go to www.funksgrove.org. Drive slowly and watch for deer in the now sparsely covered forest. Fall brings the deer close to the roads as they wander around the forest floor in search of each other and shelter. Who knows what other animals you may see! Drive down to Sugar Grove Nature Center and take to the trails there. Lots of family fun and nature’s wonders are to be found there including Imagination Grove outside for kids and an indoor bird observation room for the whole family. For more information go to www.sugargrovenaturecenter.org. Fall out and enjoy the nature around you!

Waiting is the Hardest Part
and offers same-day appointments and same-day results.
3-D Mammography
A
nytime you get a medical test, waiting for the results is often the most stressful part of the process. You can now have a screening mammogram and get your results that afternoon at the Advocate BroMenn Outpatient Center and the Medical Center in Normal. No long wait, just results when you need them. Regular mammograms play an important role in the early detection of breast cancer. They can detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, long before you or your doctor can feel a lump or tumor. Many woman hesitate to schedule a mammogram because of a busy schedule or they are anxious about the results. Advocate Health Care understands this
Since September 2013, Advocate BroMenn has used 3-D mammography for the detection of breast cancer. It is a revolutionary screening and diagnostic tool designed for early breast cancer detection that can be done in conjunction with a traditional 2-D digital mammogram. 3-D mammography complements standard 2-D mammography and is performed at the same time, on the same system. There is no additional compression required, and it only takes a few seconds longer. Very low X-ray energy is used during the exam, about the same amount as a traditional mammogram. During the 3-D part of the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over your breast, taking multiple images. Then, a computer produces a 3-D image of the breast tissue in one millimeter slices, providing greater visibility for the radiologist to see details in a way never before possible. Physicians can scroll
through the images like pages of a book. “3-D mammography, improves breast cancer screening and detection,” says Xiantian Austin, M.D., radiologist with Bloomington Radiology. “It helps us distinguish harmless abnormalities from real tumors, leading to fewer callbacks for further testing and less anxiety for women.”
Call today
Mammograms are recommended for women starting at age 40, and are typically repeated every 1-2 years. If you are under 40, be sure to discuss your family health history with your doctor to determine when you need to schedule your first mammogram. Call 1.800.3.ADVOCATE today to make an appointment. Mammograms are available at the Advocate BroMenn Outpatient Center across from the airport in Bloomington and at BroMenn Medical Center in Normal. Same day results are sent via e-mail.
If you want to hear from other women about their experiences with breast health, go online to storiesofthegirls.com. You will find inspirational stories and helpful health tips as we continue the conversation about breast health.

Bill Flick Your October 2015 BNI (Bloomington-Normal Index): • We’re mispronouncing it: The Indians who lived here pronounced it “ih-lie-NEE,” not “ill-EYE-nye” as we do. • Gloria Jean Kvetko: That’s who Gloria Jean is, at all the Gloria Jean coffee shops. She’s from suburban Chicago. • The top 100: Although California’s Silicon Valley and Seattle are the epicenter of cuttingedge computer technology, Computerworld magazine said recently that of the “100 Best Places To Work In America” in terms of “information technology” B-N is one of them. • Nearly 30 years: That’s how much older Bloomington’s Evergreen Memorial Cemetery is than even the city of Bloomington itself. Cemetery: founded in the 1820s; Bloomington: not founded until 1850. • Pass the sauce: If it’s a Friday night at the Chili’s in B-N, steaks are the most popular menu item. But if it’s a Saturday at noon, Chicken Crispers are No. 1. One in-house theory: In a big college town like B-N,
it’s to help overcome the previous night’s party fun. • Something else to mull in an insurance center: If he has a sex change Bill Flick operation and Columnist becomes a female, a young man gets lower auto insurance rates once he no longer is one. • For those counting: When it comes to a Dollar General store, it costs about 235,000 of them to build one here.
• We grow weeds, too: Along with its many agricultural crops, ISU grows 72 kinds of weeds. They grow in large containers buried underground so the roots won’t spread. • 150 stops a day: That’s the average number of stops a UPS driver makes in Bloomington-Normal. That jumps to nearly 360 stops a day in December.
• Pie R Busy: This time of year, Morton’s Libby’s plant processes enough pumpkins each day to make 1 million pumpkin pies. • Two hair stylists, a doctor, masseuse and a clothes steamer (both a person and the device): What the popular ’80s rock band, Def Leppard, asked to be backstage before their performance at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. • 7 restaurants, 35 years: Today, at 704 S. Eldorado Road, across the street from the Bloomington Denny’s, it is called Happy Hour - Sports Bar and Authentic Indian Fine Dining. Before that, it was Mama T’s Kitchen. Before that, Taste of India. Before that, Chevys. Before that, House of Hunan. Before that, Shakey’s Pizza. Before that, in 1980 when the building was built, it was Butterfields.

ambassador, McLean County Chamber of Commerce What would the perfect day be to you? My perfect day would start with my wife Jenny and I having brunch at Destihl; in the afternoon, maybe a round of golf or a long walk on Constitution Trail. The evening would have to include dinner with friends – probably at a great local restaurant like Schooners. Any “perfect day” would bring together good local food, my wife and friends. What three words would your friends use to describe you? Fun, passionate, driven What is the most memorable concert you’ve attended? The Rock to the Rescue concert in December 2013 featuring Head East, Styx, Survivor, REO Speedwagon and others is hands down my favorite concert to date. An evening of classic rock that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for tornado victims in Washington — it was a night to remember. What is your best vacation ever? My wife and I enjoy Puerto Rico. We love the culture, the food, finding new experiences around every corner and taking in the beautiful scenery. It is a special place.

I seek professional and personal advice from my husband, Roger, on a regular basis. He almost always has the “right” answer even when I don’t want to admit it. He has been my biggest supporter. What would the perfect day be to you? The perfect day at work is when I can watch something major my team has worked on come together flawlessly. It could be a big booking, a renovation or a problem we’ve solved to make the hotel better. The perfect day at home would be going to Rader Farms on a beautiful fall day with my family and watching my kids’ faces as they have fun exploring. What three words would your friends use to describe you? Quiet (at first), fun, compassionate. What is the most memorable concert you’ve attended? Garth Brooks for sure, he puts on quite a show! What is your best vacation ever? It’s a tie between Italy and Maui. Both were amazing experiences. Italy was full of sightseeing, beauty, culture, great food
and great wine and Maui was relaxing and breathtaking.

For me, I like to get a broad array of opinions. I always bat around ideas with my friends and family. I especially like it when they disagree with me and make me see things differently. Usually, I go to several people to get their perspectives on issues including my mom, Cathy Black; my dad, Dave Black; Bevin Cowie; Carlo Robustell; Tari Renner; Jamie Henderson and Yemi Adelekan. What would the perfect day be to you? Ideally, it would be a day where I am outside. I love a sunny day where I can be active by rollerblading, biking, running or playing sand volleyball. It would be even better if I had the time to grill out and relax in the evening. What three words would your friends use to describe you? Leader, passionate, driven What is the most memorable concert you’ve attended? I am not ashamed to admit I love the trashiest pop music, so I would have to say it was when I saw Ke$ha live a few years ago. What is your best vacation ever? Put me in a city I’ve never been before with time to explore. I love to experience new places, meet new people and try new foods. I love spur of the moment trips for a long weekend just going to explore. I’m a big traveler and in the past year I’ve been to LA, Pittsburgh, D.C., Phoenix, San Diego, Orlando, Atlanta, and Las Vegas. Showing up with no plan and just a passion for exploration is, to me, the best way to travel.

Who do you go to for advice? God, my wife and a circle of close friends. What would the perfect day be to you? Any day that I can hug my wife and daughter when I wake up, and again before I go to sleep is a pretty good day. If I can help others in between there, it just makes it that much more special. What three words would your friends use to describe you? Dedicated, funny, loyal What is the most memorable concert you’ve attended? Before we were married, my wife bought me Metallica tickets up in Chicago for my birthday. She knew I was a big fan and wanted to go with me. Prior to this, the only concerts she had been to were pop bands like ’NSYNC. It meant a great deal to me that she was willing to go, but the greatest part was her face throughout the concert. I think I opened her eyes to what a “real” rock show can be like. What was your most memorable vacation? The last vacation I took while my father was alive. I was about 15 and my mom and dad drove us out to Myrtle Beach. We stayed in a great room right off the beach. We spent the evenings walking the boardwalk and talking. The scenery was beautiful and we really just enjoyed each other’s company. My dad passed away not long after that from cancer. Having that time with him was memorable and meaningful.

Name: Chris Downing Age: 36 Business: Heartland Community College Title: Foundation executive director Community involvement: Baseball coach for Pony baseball for 5 years; Soccer coach for PSCL for 4 years; Bloomington-Normal Sunrise Rotarian; Member of the Sunrise Rotary Brats and Bags fundraising committee. Who do you go to for advice? I’ve been lucky to have great mentors and leaders in my life. Mary Feicke was one of the first volunteers I worked with when I came to town and she shared a lot of wisdom with me. Dr. Helen Katz was my longtime boss at the college and I learned so much from her. But in the end, the person I go to for advice the most and trust the most is my father. He is practical; he sorts out what may be irrational in my thinking and he asks great questions that help me refocus. He never tells me what to do, but helps me walk through a situation. What would the perfect day be to you? Wake up to see the headline that my Chicago White Sox won another World Series, read the texts from my dad about how cool the final out was to clinch it. Grab a quick breakfast and head to the soccer fields to watch my son and daughter play and see the smiles on their faces as they make a pass or help their teammates. While walking between games, run into a donor who got a thank-you phone call from their personal scholarship recipient and were so moved they want to create another one to help more students. Leave for lunch at a great local Mexican restaurant, where I run into a former recipient who is starting their new dream job with a local company tomorrow. The afternoon is spent mowing my yard where I find my true zen of the week. Then off to a steak dinner and a movie, where the theater doesn’t have anyone checking their phones during the new Star Wars film and the popcorn is amazingly fresh. What three words would your friends use to describe you? Genuine, positive, energetic
What is the most memorable concert you’ve attended? I just attended a Foo Fighters concert. The energy, enthusiasm and watching someone like Dave Grohl, their lead singer, who seems to genuinely want you to feel great about the experience, is just amazing. What is your best vacation ever? I was lucky enough to get to go to Hawaii, to land on this tiny chunk of land in the middle of the ocean, and be able to experience so many things. Waterfalls, rainforests, unreal beaches and coves, snorkeling, seeing animals you only see in movies. Every day there felt like something out of a dream, as if your mind grabbed everything cool thing you have ever seen and packed it into one space.

My parents ended up booking a trip at a hotel in Cancun and invited my older brother, his wife and my younger sister. We all really enjoyed each other as adults and our parents, too. It was the best vacation, and one of the most memorable for our family.

EVLA - What you should know
E
ndovenous laser ablation, or EVLA is the cutting-edge treatment of choice for varicose vein disease. The advantages of EVLA, when compared to older surgical treatments, are clear.
• EVLA is an in-office procedure that is performed under a local anesthetic, usually in under an hour. • No hospital stay is required. • There is no unsightly scarring or obvious incisions. • Complications are very rare. • Recovery is quick with minimal post-procedure discomfort. Any discomfort that occurs can be controlled with over-the-counter pain relievers. • The reported satisfaction rate of patients who have had EVLA is 98 percent! • Insurance companies acknowledge EVLA as medically necessary and
24
this often allows the patient to take advantage of their health insurance or Medicare. FDA-approved, EVLA involves inserting a small laser fiber into the diseased vein. Laser heat causes the vein to collapse and seal shut. Once that vein is closed, the blood is diverted to healthy veins. Following the procedure, a bandage or compression stocking is placed on the treated leg. Patients are encouraged to walk immediately and 10-15 minutes each
hour while awake for the next 48 hours. Patients are able to return to work quickly, usually that day or the next day. The only restrictions are no heavy lifting of greater than 30 pounds and no heavy physical aerobic activity for 48 hours. Medical grade compression stockings will be worn for three to five days as needed, to help control swelling and speed recovery. Call (309) 862-4000 to schedule a FREE SCREENING EXAM with one of our physicians or request an appointment online at www.ILveins. com. We have convenient locations in Bloomington, Eureka, Peru, Springfield and Streator.

Cruise Alaska for everything from gold to glaciers By Kim McCormick for Suzi Davis Travel
I
f the thought of Alaska intrigues you, a cruise-tour vacation – combining both land and sea – is the perfect way to explore this beautiful region. Suzi Davis Travel’s most recent vacation package included accommodations on a seven-night Princess Cruise, including stops in Fairbanks, Denali National Park, Mount McKinley, Hubbard Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park, Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. Arrival began in Fairbanks, and soon guests enjoyed a sternwheeler riverboat cruise along the Chena River, and then continued to the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge via a motor coach. With a full day to enjoy one of America’s best national parks, a natural history tour was the perfect introduction to the plants, animals, and even the geological features in the area! With time remaining, activities such as rafting and hiking were also on the agenda. A motor coach took guests to the Mount McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge for the next two nights. “The Great Room” included a stone fireplace, cozy sitting areas, cards and board games, and floor to ceiling windows that offered breathtaking views. The following morning, guests boarded
the “direct to the wilderness” rail service to their awaiting ship. The service takes guests between their ships and lodges, on the same day, without the need for an overnight hotel stay. The cruise ship passed Hubbard Glacier, Alaska’s only advancing glacier, and guests enjoyed Glacier Bay National Park. This park is home to humpback whales, sea otters, porpoises and harbor seals. A park ranger visited aboard to offer expert insight on these amazing creatures. Skagway was next, and guests enjoyed riding the world-famous White Pass and Yukon Railroad. Excitement was evident as guests visited one of the gold rush camps and browsed through cabins and tents once used as a bakery and saloon. Juneau, the capital of Alaska, was next on the journey, followed by Ketchikan. Although originally an Indian fish saltery,
Ketchikan’s growth began when it became a supply base and entry port for miners during the gold rush. As guests cruised through the Inside Passage, enjoying misty rain forests and communities that thrive on their heritage, they were mesmerized by glaciers as big as Rhode Island. These views are truly what makes Alaska cruising so popular. The end of this incredible cruise-tour took guests to Vancouver, British Columbia, to disembark and transfer to the airport to return home. To inquire about the details of the next available Alaskan cruise, contact the knowledgeable staff at our local Suzi Davis Travel office located at 2415 E. Washington St. in Bloomington. You may also contact them via telephone at 309662-0455, or on their website at www.suzidavis.com/alaska

academic journal for entrepreneurship exercises and the Entrepreneurship Education Project (http://eepconference. com). He is also responsible for organizing TEDxNormal. Vision for leadership: Doan adheres to the philosophy, “Always give first, authentically.” He believes in the importance of collaboration and cocreation, and stresses the importance of inviting others to collaboratively identify problems and opportunities and to develop solutions. Leisure time diversions and favorite stress buster: Though he admits to not being very good at leisure time or stress busters, he ranks playing games (Uno or Trouble) with his wife and son and taking his year-old chocolate Labradors to the dog park at the top of the list. Charity and community groups: Associate director of programs: ISU Means Center for Entrepreneurial Studies (2010-2015); Founder and curriculum builder: Unit 5 Innovative Entrepreneurs Experiential Class; Advisory board: With My girls Empowerment Institute; Co-organizer: Annual Women Mean Business Panel at ISU; Founder and
organizer: The Corny Ideas Challenge (student idea pitch competition)
Carole Ringer
Career highlights and/or accomplishments: Carol is very proud of her work with the symphony. She was instrumental in bringing the Bloomington-Normal Symphony through the merger with the Springfield symphony, which resulted in the birth of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra from a budget of $60,000 to the budget of $1.13 million. She’s also very proud to have been recruited to build the startup of the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation, which continues to thrive. She finds it very rewarding to watch this — or any — organization be successful and grow beyond her direct leadership. Vision for leadership: Carole believes that leadership is first a time to listen and learn, then to develop a vision that has been built on others’ input. “Once a vision is in place, a good leader will find the best ways to achieve the stepping stones and always stay open to new ideas,” she said. Leisure time diversions and favorite stress buster: Carole enjoys concerts and performances of all kinds, gallery openings and finds any activity built around the arts to be both relaxing and rejuvenating. Charity and community groups: Illinois Symphony Orchestra: Co-chair development, Gala Committee, Investment Committee, ISO Endowment Fund board secretary; Illinois Prairie Community Foundation: Investment Committee, Women-to-Women Giving Circle Steering Committee; Rotary: Bloomington Rotary Foundation Board President; Centennial Campaign; Multicultural Leadership Program: board, Development Committee Chair; Sigma Alpha Iota U (Music Fraternity): Aubuchon Fund Leader; IWU Chapter Financial Adviser; co-chair Girl Scout Music Badge annual workshop; Girl Scouts: Liaison to SAI; Diamonds Award Committee; First Presbyterian Church: Chancel Choir; Legacy Giving committee chair

Julie Hile,
president, Hile Group
Career highlights and/or accomplishments: The ultimate measure of Julie’s professional project is the number of women and men, who, because of the efforts of the Hile Group, return to their families and friends safely each work day. The Hile Group has used collaboration across multiple perspectives to make way for front-line employees and their managers to revise the safety rules for nearly every Class 1 railroad in North America — most recently Amtrak. Vision for leadership: People in true community learning anew every single day, egos in check, collaborating with all the hope in the world. Leisure time diversions and favorite stress buster: Spending time with family, friends, and her golden retrievers are what warms Julie’s heart. Together they enjoy cooking, swimming, sailing, kayaking, hiking and biking, singing, laughing, learning and growing together in service to the community. Charity and community groups: Coclerk: Bloomington-Normal Religious Society of Friends; Co-founder: Bloomington-Normal Citizens for Peace and Justice; Executive committee: Economic Development Council Executive Committee and Co-Chair of its Revenue & Communication Committee; Bike BloNo’s annual Tour de Taco; Facilitator: Multicultural Leadership Program
Kari Sandhaas,
Vice President, Multicultural Leadership Program; senior agency training designer, Country Financial
Career highlights and/or accomplishments: Kari has a lifelong passion for crosscultural understanding and inclusion, which has provided her with a rich and varied career, spanning the fields of leadership development, training design, international education and creative services. A common thread among
LTD OCT15 17-32.indd 29
these has been the design of integrated experiences that engage people in ways that inspire – that lead to new awareness and creative change. Her early career path began at the intersection of art and learning, where she worked to advance gender equality and empowerment, along with the development of cross-cultural education programs within a women’s ministry. For the past seven years, she has focused her energies on leadership development through both her current job designing leadership curricula for Country Financial agency managers and emerging leaders and her volunteer efforts developing diverse leaders through the Multicultural Leadership Program. Vision for leadership: Kari believes passionately in community — that we, as people, must work, live, love and play together, as stewards of a shared environment, to care for one another with fairness and equality. She believes that a society is only as good as the wellbeing of the least of its members. Leisure time diversions and favorite stress buster: Kari enjoys supporting community events, immersing herself in art, music and all things multicultural; visiting the Farmers Market, art fairs and festivals with friends; bicycling; yoga; walking the dogs; bird watching; and gardening with her family; and sipping a great quality cappuccino at the Coffee Hound. Her best stress buster is doing yoga in the park on Sunday mornings. Charity and community groups: Most current and primary roles: Vice president: board of directors, Multicultural Leadership Program, on board since June 2012 ; Past president: Ecology Action Center, Past President, on board of directors since 2006; Vice president: Adult programs, Autism McLean, on board of directors since 2007; founded Diversity’s Missing Piece autism employment awareness program; Women to Women Fund: Illinois Prairie Community Foundation, since 2012; Parret Endowment for Arts and Culture, since 2012; MCLP marketing project team: Habitat for Humanity of McLean County, 2011-2012
Susan BallerShepard, MDiv,
MSW, parish associate Presbyterian minister, adjunct instructor, religious studies
Career highlights and/or accomplishments: Susan’s career highlights include several speaking engagements. She was a keynote speaker in Arosa, Switzerland, with others, including Dr. Jane Goodall, spoke at the “Examined Life” conference at the University of Iowa Medical School, was featured at the Global Interfaith evening at ISU, and once had a manuscript accepted into the Breadloaf Sicily Writing Conference, including instruction from former U.S. poet laureate Philip Levine. Also a highlight for Susan was the time when, once, after a poetry reading, an individual told her one of her poems helped her to process deep grief. Vision for leadership: One of Susan’s favorite quotes is this, by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood, and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” It reflects well on her vision of leadership which is to connect people with each other, and to resources, literature, education and hope. To inspire. To help clear obstacles. Equipping people with skills and education and cheering them on toward “the endless immensity” of their passion and work. Leisure time diversions and favorite stress buster: Susan enjoys reading, writing, spending time with friends and family, paddle boarding and being outside in nature. Charity and community organizations: Founding board member: Community Health Care Clinic; Co-leader: “Global Leaders for Orphans Initiative: China”; with American Chamber of Commerce Committee on Social Responsibility; Global leader and educator: Leadership Development application – Goldin Institute; Volunteer: helped rebuild Centre Montessori d’Haiti, Haitian teacher training center and microbusiness organization.
