Flamingo
Flamboyance
Story and Photos by Deanna Frautschi
A
group of flamingos is sometimes referred to as a “flamboyance”. That’s definitely what impresses you when you walk through the entry door today at Miller Park Zoo! Twentytwo Greater Flamingos, some 5 feet tall, stride gracefully together greeting you in or near the pool of this wonderful new exhibit. And with a fence just a little over 3 feet tall, the view is magnificent. The “flamingo flamboyance” exhibit opened to the public in late June. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ll definitely want to make a trip soon. www.millerparkzoo.org

Bill Flick Your August 2016 BNI (Bloomington-Normal Index): • Accident scene the McLean County Coroner’s Office sees most: a single vehicle roll-over, the driver not belted. “You see enough of those,” says one staffer, “that you learn never to drive without a seat belt.”
Weekly he’d have done if he’d not taken up acting and gotten out of Danville: “a store clerk or State Farm agent.” • If you’re counting, there are 19,057 different ways to order coffee at that Starbucks store or cafe. Bill Flick Columnist
• Stop into Bruce Springsteen’s office in Jersey City, N.J., and you will find it features a poster-sized photo of Springsteen posing next to a “Welcome To Normal” sign. • People who’ve had too much to drink tip better than sober people. That’s according to Bloomington-Normal pizza delivery folk. • What Oscar winner and Danville native Gene Hackman told Entertainment
• Thirty-seven summers ago, rather than being a TV and movie star, Jane Lynch was detasseling corn near Shirley. That’s what she did for money during the summer of 1979 as she summer-schooled at Illinois State University. • Just in case your neighbors look at you strangely, you now can get landmine insurance from State Farm, too. • Something only a Central Illinois farmer would know: One inch of rain on one acre of ground equals 27,150 gallons of water. • This new-age technology? Oh, the humanity! Both Advocate BroMenn and OSF St. Joseph medical centers report once or twice a month seeing patients who are injured while walking and textmessaging at the same time. • That “black box” you always hear about after an air crash was invented here, at an electronics plant along South Main, where the eight-track tape also was developed.
• The first Playboy magazine Playmate to sign her centerfold was Jill DeVries of Downs, a saleswoman in downtown Bloomington. That was in October 1975. After she said in the magazine that she “loved to make love out in the hay in her barn,” according to a story in the Bloomington Pantagraph (you’ll want to subscribe, of course), traffic increased tenfold as people began driving to Downs to see if they might be able to see the barn. That’s a photo of Jill DeVries here, out of Playboy, wearing a T-shirt from the Bloomington store where she worked – the Joint General Store, along North Main, across from today’s downtown Coffee Hound. • Come later this month when 20,000 Illinois State University students return, so will watching the water-usage monitors and gauges. As an example, at Watterson Towers alone, toilets flush 12,000 times a day. Bill Flick is at bflick@pantagraph.com

It’s a
dog’s
life
Story By Karen Hansen, Jonell Kehias — Photos by Kelly Shannon
E
ach year, more people across the country celebrate Take Your Dog To Work Day. But some lucky canines don’t have to wait for that one 24-hour period in June to tag along to the office. They get to go year-round. Pets in the workplace bring a whole variety of perks, according to Nestle-Purina. Those wiggles and tail wags and puppy kisses help relieve stress. Our furry friends can also be ice breakers and help people connect to
co-workers and clients. Because they need walks and potty breaks, they encourage their owners to exercise more. And because those owners are typically happier, that makes them more productive employees. A win-win all around. And c’mon, admit it, having a dog around is just plain fun! If you need more proof, just take a look at some of our Twin City canines, on the job.
Meet: Wink Age: 14 months Weight: 60 lbs Owner: Kate Greene, Alex Maffei Can often be seen hanging out at: The Gingerbread House, Bloomington Wink is very personable sheepdoodle who has never met a stranger. In a store filled with toys, Wink is still the main attraction for many young Gingerbread House customers. “The kids make a beeline for the office where Wink’s bed is,” laughs Kate “and if Wink isn’t there they are so disappointed.” Wink has been a Gingerbread House regular since the second day Alex and Kate brought him home.
Meet: Sir Edwin Tank (His friends call him “Tank”) Wink Age: 16 months Weight: 59 lbs Official title: DOG (Director of Greeting) Likes: Watermelon, fruit, veggies, playing with his ball, having his rear end scratched Can often be seen hanging out at: Childer’s Door Service, Hudson
Sir Edwin Tank
Tank takes his Director of Greeting duties very seriously, and is always eager to welcome customers to Childer’s, except, of course, when he is sleeping..and snoring in the office. But Tank’s duties go well beyond greeting, He attends all sales meetings and has spearheaded several sales events. He is also heavily into social media, with his own Facebook page (facebook.com/siredwinthetank) that has 661 likes. He patiently poses with customers who want to come in and have a selfie taken with him.
Meet: Henley Age: 6 months Weight: 20-25 lbs Owner: Ashley Snodgrass Likes: Belly rubs, long walks, apples and bananas Can often be seen hanging out at: Floor’d Concepts Inc., Bloomington Henley is a 6-month old Australian shepherd who has been a regular at Floor’d since her second day with Ashley. She’s a calm dog, although she becomes playful with many of the contractors and likes to use their hands as play toys. “She always has a smile on her face,” says Ashley, “And she recently learned to shake hands. So she likes to sit at the front door and offer her paw to customers.”
Meet: Lennie Age: 11 years Weight: 14.5 lbs Owner: Julie Kubsch Can often be seen hanging out at: Specs Around Town
Lennie Photo provided by owner

Henley
There’s probably not a BloNo shop dog that’s better known that Lennie. The laid-back Shih Tzu has been overseeing the comings and goings at Specs Around Town since he was a puppy, after Specs owner Julie Kubsch received him as a birthday gift from her husband, Steve. “He’s the four-legged supervisor of Specs Around Town,” jokes Kubsch. A recent typical day finds Lennie stretched out on a rug at the downtown Bloomington shop as customers ogle designer eyewear of all shapes, sizes and personalities. “He’s so laid back and he’s really good with customers,” said Specs staffer Emily Fearman. “People come in to see him.” Lennie dons costumes for Halloween and his dapper good looks have been featured in Specs modeling campaigns. “There’s nothing like a dog in glasses,” said Kubsch.

Meet: Blanch Age: 2 years Weight: 48 lbs Owner: Amy Hoffman Can often be seen hanging out at: That Dapper Pet It’s truly a dog’s life at That Dapper Pet, not only for the canines (and felines!) that arrive to be pampered, but also for Blanch. The Standard Poodle shares her life with Amy Hoffman, owner of the upscale pet spa and boutique in downtown Bloomington. “Blanch is very interested in greeting every single person and dog that comes in here,” said Hoffman, who also owns Yorkie mixes. “She’s pretty outgoing, very playful and loving. She can be a couch potato and she’s very friendly,” Hoffman said of Blanch, a rescue dog that was abandoned by her previous owner and has “blossomed” with her new “leash” on life. “She’s really come out of her shell,” said Hoffman. Blanch
Meet: Karma Age: 8 years Weight: 16 lbs Photo provided by owner Owner: Amanda Wycoff Can often be seen hanging out at: Berkshire Hathaway with Team Wycoff
Karma Photo provided by owner
Team Wycoff has seven members listed on its website. And one of them has four legs. “She is the love of my life,” gushed Realtor Amanda Wycoff of Karma, the Havanese she got from a neighbor. “She sticks to me like glue.” Karma has her Canine Good Citizen certification and is in the office at least once each week, depending on Wycoff ’s schedule. There, her office décor includes a doggie bed to lounge in and a “Barkshire Hathaway” dog bowl. (She’s got a matching T-shirt, too.) But Karma’s doing more than just lounging around when she’s at work. She actually has official duties that come with her gig as the vice president of public relations, including welcoming clients and their children.
Meet: Oshie Age: 6½ years Weight: 14 lbs Owner: Tina Crow Likes: Long walks, ears scratched Can often be seen hanging out at: Evergreen Cemetery, Bloomington Named after the former St. Louis Blues hockey player T.J. Oshie (Tina’s daughter was attending University of Missouri-St. Louis when they first got Oshie), this happy little Yorkie is a favorite for visitors at Evergreen Cemetery. “Oshie is the first thing people gravitate toward when they come into the office, “ explains Tina. “For folks who are grieving or have had a recent loss, petting Oshie seems to provide comfort.” Whether it’s genealogy research or making burial arrangements, Oshie greets all visitors with a big, toothy smile. He’s clearly happy when visitors stop in and he has become a much-loved fixture at Evergreen. Oshie
Meet: Tango Age: 6 years Weighst 80 lbs Owner: Diane Cote Likes: Ears, behind and belly rubbed Can sometimes be seen hanging out on weekends at: Bloomington-Normal Association of Realtors Office, Bloomington Tango Photo provided by owner
While spending Monday through Friday lounging at home, Tango often accompanies Diane into the office on those weekends when she is putting in some extra hours. “He keeps me company and adds some protection,” explains Diane. When Tango is at the office he likes to find his toys and run around the “loop,” hoping Diane will chase him. He will then rest quietly on the cool tile until it’s time to leave.
Meet: Henry Age: 2½ years Weight: 80 lbs Owners: Doug and Deb Nord Can often be seen hanging out at: Nord Outdoor Power, Bloomington Henry has a very sweet disposition and is the official greeter at Nord Outdoor Power. He likes mornings when he has the store to himself. In the afternoons he is joined by his 11 week old younger brother Baxter, who is in the puppy pest stage. Besides customers, Henry loves the camera and will often jump up on the seat of the tractor to pose for photos.

A Time and Place Remembered (August 31, 1990)
Today’s early morning haze and the sun’s easy rise over rooftops and trees return me to another time. It was when the birthing nurse gave me a white sterile mask and green gown loosely tied. I was privileged to be there at a time and place where love and longing met. Doctors said you wouldn’t happen but they couldn’t see beyond the rooftops and trees. After twenty years the gift of you came like the sun’s easy rise at a place and time where love and longing met. by Michael Escoubas
