Bringing up baby…snow leopards Story and photos by Deanna Frautschi

E

xcitement was wild at Miller Park Zoo when two snow leopard cubs (both females) were born to the resident adult female (Hima) at the zoo on May 6. Since mom leopard ignored her cubs, Zoo curator Jonathan Reding stepped in with his knowledge of caring for abandoned zoo cubs and developed a feeding plan and schedule for raising these endangered species youngsters. With help from dedicated zookeepers and a few delighted volunteers to help with evening feedings (myself included), the babies continued to thrive. Special formulas are fed and adjustments are made by Reding as the babies grow. They will soon be eating baby food. As of this writing, they are 3 weeks old. I encourage you to go visit them and see how they’ve grown. “Engagement and education is key in involving people wanting to save species around the world. In the case of the snow leopard, it is extremely unlikely that guests to Miller Park Zoo will ever see one in Central Asia (where they reside in the mountains),” said Jay Tetzloff, director of Parks,

Dee Frautschi doing an evening feeding

Miller Park Zoo curator Jonathan Reding and Parks and Recreation director Jay Tetzloff introduce the 3-week-old snow leopard cubs at a press conference on May 28. Recreation and Cultural Arts/ Miller Park Zoo.

Zoos last chance for many species “For many species, zoos and aquariums are the last chance of survival before extinction. There are also a number of species that are, unfortunately, extinct in the wild and now only found in zoos,” explained Tetzloff, who also leads a snow leopard species survival program for 68 zoos. When asked what the most difficult part of raising the snow leopards in a zoo setting was, Tetzloff said it was having them born in the first place. He added, “This species has not bred well over the last few years in North America. It would have been better

One of the cubs (at 10 days old) asleep on arm of Jonathan Reding after being fed

if the mother would have raised them but staff needed to take over when the mother did not. “ In addition to performing their regular duties, staff took turns feeding and caring for the cubs. The zoo staff and the public are excited about these new additions at Miller Park Zoo. Everyone is learning about snow leopards, their care and feeding as well as the species endangered status. “Having snow leopard cubs is a great thing for our zoo. We look forward to showing off “the girls” to all of our guests. Breeding endangered species and educating the public about them is part of our focus,” said Tetzloff.

Experience the laid-back luxury of the Maldives By Kimberly McCormick for Suzi Davis Travel

M

aldives, considered by many to be a premier beach destination, is an archipelago nation of nearly 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean. Imagine yourself surrounded by deep blue seas, turquoise reefs, white powder-like beaches, and palm trees. The seas of Maldives have incredibly high visibility throughout the year, with water so clear, visitors can see fish as far as 164 feet away! And, not just one type of fish, either. Your spectacular view will encompass sightings of over a thousand species of fish and other underwater creatures, too. If you’d rather have an up-close view, almost every resort of the Maldives has a sports center. You will find masks and snorkels, and parasailing, kayaking, water skiing, and jet skiing are also available for your pleasure. Or, you may experience the satisfaction of catching and cooking your own fish! Night reef fishing trips are offered at many resorts. You’ll leave via boat before sunset to find your spot near a reef, and your boat crew will lead the way on using lines, hooks, and sinkers. Sources share that within an hour’s time, you’ll have caught enough to fill your barbecue grill! If you’re a surf aficionado, your time to vacation is June through

September. The southwest monsoon brings swells ranging from three to eight feet, and there are resorts close by, giving you exceptional access to ride the waves. If you love sightseeing, and/or photography, you absolutely must enjoy a seaplane photo flight! You’ll be able to view the Maldives from the sky in a De Havilland DHC 6 Twin Otter plane. With high wings and large, untainted glass windows, you’ll be presented with incredible photo opportunities. And don’t forget your take-off and landing will be from the sea! As you fly over shallow lagoons, uninhabited islands, tourist resorts, fishing villages, and hue-shifting seas, you’ll never forget this once-in-a-lifetime view. And

the stories you’ll share about the dolphins, sting rays and fish will be the perfect conversation starter back home. Whether you’re looking to sit on the beach, watch gorgeous sunsets, drink your favorite cocktail or dive into the water to swim with the fish or catch the wave, with over 100 resorts to choose from and a wide variety of accommodations, this getaway caters to many budgets. Contact the knowledgeable staff at our local Suzi Davis Travel office located at 2415 E. Washington St. in Bloomington for assistance. Bill Flick Your July 2015 BNI (Bloomington-Normal Index): • 185: The exact number of years that passed between (July 4, 1776) the birth of America and (July 4, 1961) the birth of Dan Brady, the ever-present Republican state representative from Bloomington. • Rainy days: The least busiest of those for Connect Transit buses in BloomingtonNormal. Theory: it’s Bill Flick Columnist just too yucky to stand outside and wait for a bus. • Two: The number of TV stars at downtown Bloomington’s Epiphany Farms restaurant: that’s Chef Leah Horcher, who interned at Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes,” and chef/ owner Stuart Hummel, who in 2014 was on Bravo’s “Top Chef ” in the “Top Chef Duels.” • 5,000 new annuals: What they plant each year at those gardens on the grounds of Ewing Cultural Center and the Genevieve Green Gardens at Emerson and Towanda in Bloomington.

• Undercover, in tuxedos: How McLean County Sheriff Jon Sandage and a deputy were garbed at a recent “Evening of the Stars” American Red Cross gala. They were helping to “inconspicuously” guard and make life a bit more secure for 28-year-old country music songstress Kellie Pickler, who headlined the event and can occasionally be hawked by over-zealous fans. • 350: The average number of cars parked each day in what used to be the GTE parking lot along Empire Street in Bloomington. It’s now a depository and a central storage point for rental cars to be dispatched to rental facilities all over the Midwest. • July 1: That’s the beginning of a brand-new fiscal year for state of Illinois employees. If, however, you are a federal employee, the fiscal year begins Oct. 1. In Bloomington, the fiscal year begins May 1. In Normal, it starts April 1. In McLean County, the fiscal year begins Jan. 1. In America, as you might be able to tell, no one can seem to agree when a fiscal year should begin.

• 4/21/68: The edition of the Bloomington Daily Pantagraph that (thanks to Don Meyer for tipping us off) had a photo of a Bloomington High senior working on his “Romeo Robot,” a “remote-control monster” that was, it said, a 4-H project he “had rebuilt” and mastered. This mad, robotbuilding scientist? It was, according to the caption, Edward R. Rust. After his graduation, not only from BHS but also robots, he became CEO of State Farm Insurance. Coincidently, the “remotecontrol monster” was first built in 1965 by a trio of BHS students, one of whom was Steven Stockton. He, too, would become a State Farm exec and, in the 2000s, mayor of Bloomington, too. • About 7,600 shoppers: What WalMart estimates is the number of shoppers it gets on an average, school-year weekend at its Supercenter in Normal. It is one of the super-chain’s most popular stores. Bill Flick is at bill.flick@lee.net

Has leg pain kept you off the dance floor? Has leg pain kept you in your chair and off the dance floor lately? Have you stopped taking walks, playing tennis or bowling? Eliminating these activities and others like them can be because of symptoms associated with vein disease. Varicose veins or vein disease can cause aching, painful or restless legs, as well as leg heaviness, swollen ankles or muscle cramps. They can occur at any age and among b o t h men and women. A family history of vein disease or varicose veins and aging does increase one’s tendency to develop varicose veins. Other contributing factors

10

include a sedentary lifestyle, prolonged standing occupations and pregnancy. Vein disorders are not always visible to the naked eye. If you have stopped some physical activities or are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned, the first step is to have an examination and diagnostic ultrasound to determine the cause and severity of your vein problems. The treatments to eliminate vein abnormalities have improved dramatically in recent years. You don’t need to undergo painful surgical vein stripping. State-of-the-art corrective treatments include endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), ultrasound guided sclerotherapy and sclerotherapy. With any of these three procedures, there is usually minimal to no downtime and no sedation so patients are able to return to their daily activities immediately. EVLA eliminates the abnormal saphenous vein, which is the source of most varicose vein issues. Using ultrasound technology, a thin laser fiber is guided into the diseased vein through a small opening to deliver laser heat to the diseased vein wall, causing it to close and seal shut, diverting the blood to healthy veins. Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy (UGS) allows us to treat large veins beneath

the surface of the skin. An ultrasound image is used to guide a needle into the abnormal vein and deliver medication that causes the vein to close. Surface sclerotherapy is a treatment for small to medium size (reticular) veins in which a tiny needle is used to inject the veins with a medication, which acts in the same way as in UGS to close the vein. The collapsed veins are reabsorbed into the body and the surface veins are no longer visible. There is no way to completely prevent varicose veins but if you’d like to keep dancing you should watch your weight, exercise regularly, eat a diet high in fiber and low in salt, and wear compression stockings. Call now to get your legs evaluated by The VEIN Specialists, LLC at 309-8624000 or visit the website at ILVEINS.com with locations in Bloomington, Eureka, Peru, Springfield and Streator.

Five tips for a safe summer Summer is time for flip-flops, t-shirts and barbecues. Although it’s easy to be casual about many things, safety is important to fully enjoy summer. The warm weather invites risks for certain injuries and health problems. Consider these tips on keeping you and your family safe: • Secure home windows. Children tend to lean against screens in open windows, making falls one of the leading causes of injury to children. Consider installing window guards or stops – especially on bedroom windows. • Make helmets a priority. “Anything that’s rolling, your kids need to be wearing a helmet for,” says Dr. Aaron Traeger, pediatrician with Advocate Medical Group. “Even small little injuries can be really devastating to a child’s developing brain.” Helmets help prevent injuries, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests helmets with Consumer Product Safety Commission approval for biking and skating. • Limit your time in the sun. Dehydration and sunburn are preventable ailments that are commonly seen in our Immediate Care and emergency room each summer, says Aaron Barclay, registered nurse and manager of emergency and trauma services at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center. Remember to drink plenty of water and apply sunscreen generously, and often. • Consider the heat and your health. Be aware of three heat-related syndromes: heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat cramps are the first stage of heat illness,

causing muscle cramps, heavy sweating, fatigue and thirst. If not treated, it can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which can cause shock, brain damage, and death. • Be aware of allergies. The most common allergies are food, insect stings, medications and latex. Allergic reactions can include a rash (usually itchy) with hives or welts; swelling in the throat or elsewhere; wheezing; and trouble breathing or swallowing. Severe reactions require immediate medical attention, and a trip to the emergency room. Barclay suggests you talk with your doctor about an EpiPen, if you or a family member have a known allergy to bee stings, food items or other triggers.

If injury or illness slows you down this summer, get back to doing the things you love faster. For same day physician appointments, call 1.800.3.ADVOCATE. For prompt or urgent care, get into our Immediate Care clinic by visiting AdvocateHealth.com/BroMenn. Immediate Care is located at the Advocate BroMenn Outpatient Center, 3024 E. Empire St., Bloomington, and at 1302 Franklin Ave., Normal (on the campus of Advocate BroMenn Medical Center).

Meet The VEIN Specialists

Dr. Jonathan Benson, Dr. Richard Castillo, Dr. Kathy Bohn, Dr. Thomas Nielsen, Dr. Ruel Wright with the VEIN Specialist staff. All staff is trained in vein disease so patients can feel comfortable asking them a question.

By Jonell Kehias, Photos by David Proeber “Compassion.” “Kindness.” “Amazing.” “Wonderful.” These are just a few of the accolades used over and over again by many of The Vein Specialists patients, Dr. Kathy Bohn, Dr. Thomas Nielsen, Dr. Richard Castillo, Dr. Jonathan Benson and Dr. Ruel Wright are the five physicians who inspire the kind of devotion that is normally shown by pre-teen girls for boy bands. Patients love these doctors. And after spending some time with them, it’s easy to see why. Their office is out by the airport, tucked away off Empire Street at 3302 Gerig Drive, Suite 100. Bloomington. The office has a spa-like atmosphere with comfortable chairs, soothing colors, and a leg lamp. Yep, the very same leg lamp from the Christmas Story movie. It’s that touch of whimsy, that fishnet stockinged; tongue-in-cheek nod to their work

28

July 2015 — Limited

that immediately puts patients at ease. The doctors are all extremely passionate about phlebology (vein care). However, you won’t hear them use the word “phlebology.” They talk of sump pumps and garden hoses. They take the medical-ese out of vein care and put it in terms that the average patient can understand. You walk away from a consultation knowing what the problem is, and what the solution is. And in more cases than not, that solution is a painless laser treatment that can take approximately an hour One of the most common misconceptions about vein disease is that it is mainly a cosmetic concern. Symptoms such as leg fatigue, restless legs, swelling, pain and leg cramps can all be resolved through treatment, rather than medication. One of their favorite success stories is using laser treatment to

eliminate a patient’s severe leg cramps. The cramps were so disruptive that the patient had to stop sleeping in the same bed as her spouse. After the procedure, her cramps were gone and she was able to share the same bed with her husband. And then there was a patient who suffered from non-healing leg ulcers for more than 20 years. A vein treatment did what multiple skin grafts and topical creams could not. A laser procedure closed the abnormal veins causing the ulcer. It completely healed his ulcers in six weeks. Other patients are able to stop taking medication for restless leg syndrome. It’s these success stories, where the physicians are able to develop ongoing relationships with patients and give stateof-the-art diagnosis and treatment in a relaxed, one-on-one basis that has drawn the doctors to this emerging field.

Frequently Asked Questions Is treatment covered by insurance? Dr. Richard Castillo explains vein function with the help of a chart.

In many cases, insurance companies cover all or a portion of the evaluation, diagnostics and procedures.

What’s a common misconception about vein disease? Many people believe vein disease is “only cosmetic” and doesn’t need to be treated. Vein symptoms are deceptive and just because someone doesn’t have varicose veins do not exclude the possibility of venous disease. A thorough examination by a doctor trained in phlebology is needed to determine whether vein disease is a likely cause of one’s leg symptoms. Dr. Thomas Nielsen shows some of the state-of-the-art ultrasound diagnostic and treatment tools. That kind of patient interaction is important to the doctors. So is community interaction. By day you’ll see the doctors in their scrubs. After hours they’re fishing, golfing, biking, flying, attending charity events, or playing with their Cavachon puppy. And always, at work or on their own time, they are eager to answer questions, to educate the public about the importance of vein health. If you suffer from varicose veins, restless leg syndrome, fatigue, leg cramps, swelling or itching or other symptoms, give The Vein Specialists a call for an indepth, personal consultation at 309-862-4000 or request an appointment online at www.ilveins.com

How long does a procedure take? Procedure times vary from 15 minutes to an hour; depend on the treatment and simplicity of anatomy. Many people are pleasantly surprised that we can treat this disease in our office with a laser procedure.

Laser treatment is a very effective outpatient treatment for varicose veins.

How can someone stay “vein” healthy? Remain active. Use compression hose in prolonged standing or sitting situations and during pregnancy. Diet and exercise are never a wrong answer. Don’t smoke. Pay attention to heredity. Mom and Dad’s veins are similar to yours.

Dr. Kathy Bohn and Dr. Ruel Wright by their famous leg lamp.

Green frog resting on Lily pad stem

Blue Dasher Dragonfly waiting for his next meal to fly by.

Rabbit in High Grass There he is, all but hidden. I see half of him from on high; I see his pointy ears, his twitching nose, his round brown body as I catch an updraft that circles me up and round and down and up again.

Indigo Bunting getting a drink of water.

I look for snakes and mice and rotund rabbits so secure in their habitat of lush green grass not thinking that the end is near despite their keen black eyes, their twitching nose and their antennae-like pointy ears!
