Stange Law Firm, PC -When

Do you want to be seen at a courthouse?

parties are going through a divorce proceeding that is contested, the reality is court appearances are likely going to happen. For some parties, they might have to appear at a courthouse multiple times in a contested case. In contested divorce cases, there are often preliminary court dates like pre-trial conferences, status conferences, adjourn dockets and settlement conferences. There can also be hearing and/or trial dates where the case does not settle. For some parties, the thought of walking in and out of the courthouse can cause stress. Maybe people they know will see them. Maybe people will ask why they are in court. For a lot of parties, the thought of being seen in court can be quite embarrassing. For many, it can cause stress to have to explain to people they know that they are going through a divorce. One big positive of collaborative divorce is that court ap-

pearances are usually not necessary. If the case settles in the collaborative process, the parties might not ever have to go to the courthouse. Collaborative divorce is a distinct process through guidelines established by the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals. In many jurisdictions, if the parties can settle outside of court, the case can be submitted on affidavits. The judge can then sign off on the divorce without the parties ever having to go to court. This can allow parties to quietly resolve their divorce case in a private manner and this privacy can give the parties involved quite a bit of piece of mind. For those interested in keeping your divorce private, they ought to consider a collaborative divorce. The privacy that is offered is a plus for many. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law mat-

ters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, juvenile matters, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers. Stange Law Firm, PC understands the emotions that can come from a divorce or family law matter. No matter the family law issue you face, we are here to help you rebuild your life. Age: 36 Business: Advocate BroMenn Medical Center and Eureka Hospital Title: Medical Director of the Laboratory Career highlights and/or accomplishments: I became the medical director of the Laboratories at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center and Eureka Hospital in 2012. I was chosen as a Choosing Wisely Champion by the American Society for Clinical Pathology in 2016 for the laboratory utilization program I started. This project helped both patients and the hospital by promoting the appropriate utilization of laboratory tests and blood transfusions. I serve on or chair various hospital committees and am currently the lead physician safety champion for Advocate BroMenn. I have also been twice named Physician of the Quarter. Community involvement: I have served on the board of directors for Wish Bone Canine Rescue for four years with two terms as resident. I also volunteer in various roles within the organization. My dogs are named Pork Chop and Elvis. What fictional place would you most like to visit? Hogwarts Who inspires you to be better? Dr. Sue Strayer is an amazing mentor. Larissa Armstrong

Age: 38 Business: Ecology Action Center Title: Assistant Director Career highlights and/or accomplishments: Running the Solar BloomingtonNormal project for the Ecology Action Center allows me to help our community increase its renewable energy generation. Our 2016 program resulted in 430 kilowatts of new solar capacity in the county, and I am excited to see what the end of our 2018 program will bring! Community involvement: As a townie, I have been actively involved in my community for years. My work at the Ecology Action Center requires a visible community presence, providing information at community events, giving presentations to community groups, and hosting our own events throughout the year. I am an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of BN, serving the congregation in a variety of capacities. I am a member of the local Soroptimist International chapter, and was an active volunteer in the group for more than 20 years before becoming a member. I enjoy creating opportunities for other women and girls in my community through Soroptimist. I recently became the vice president of the West Bloomington Revitalization Project board. I love being involved with WBRP, which oversees a diverse array of projects aimed to bolster Bloomington’s historic west side. What is the best way to start your day? I start my day the same way every day. With a hungry cat standing on me, telling me that hitting snooze one more time is unacceptable. Among your friends and family, what are you famous for? Baking – cheesecakes especially! What skill would you like to master? I really love to bake, and am obsessed (like many people) with the Great British Baking Show. I typically bake sweet items, and rarely bake anything savory. The show has inspired me to switch it up and start experimenting with breads. Who inspires you to be better? My family, friends, colleagues, and community inspire me to be better every day. I am so fortunate

to have such a wonderful support network, and community to call home. It would be selfish of me to keep all that luck to myself, and not give as much of myself back as I am able. What is the best compliment you have received? A few years ago a regular volunteer for the Ecology Action Center emailed saying they would work one more event before moving out of state, and said, “I wouldn’t want to miss one last awesome adventure in proclaiming the message of environmental stewardship with the ebullient Larissa.” The first part of the compliment is obvious. They called me ebullient, and truth be told, I had to look that word up, but I think cheerful and full of energy is a delightful descriptor. The larger compliment is not as obvious. They described a day volunteering for us as an “awesome adventure.” I take great pride in working for the Ecology Action Center and am very passionate about sharing our work with the community. Hearing someone else label that effort as an awesome adventure means my passion and enthusiasm is contagious. When other people feel the same joy that I do about the important work of caring for the health of our local environment and community – it just further validates that I am exactly where I am supposed to be, doing exactly what I am supposed to do. There is no better compliment than that.

Hugs, smiles, helping and encouraging other people, drumming and 3–point basketball shots. What skill would you like to master? Different languages, Spikeball, always being kind to all people all the time.

What are three interesting facts about you? I was in a nationally syndicated news story about my 3-point basketball shot in 8th grade, I was transported in the Life Flight helicopter when I was in first grade, I’ve been on a billboard twice in my life… and a 4th one… I am an uncle for the first time ever. My name is “Unky.” What fictional place would you most like to visit? The Avengers/ Agents of Shield headquarters in New York City. Who inspires you to be better? My three sisters and brothers- inlaw, Mike Pohlmann, Jesus and God and too many friends to name them all… my friends are awesome. What is the best compliment you have received? I have a big heart, I’m nice and kind, I’m joyful, I’m authentic and real and I look like my dad.

Age: 34 Business: Meyer Capel, A Professional Corporation Title: Associate Attorney Career highlights and/or accomplishments: My legal career began in the nonprofit sector at Prairie State Legal Services. There I primarily helped people avoid homelessness and escape domestic violence. The work was challenging, but very rewarding. I left Prairie State Legal Services to become a public defender. At the public defender’s office I took advantage of an opportunity to work on the mental health specialty court. I’ve since gone into private practice at the law firm of Meyer Capel. Since joining Meyer Capel, my practice has been concentrated to family law and criminal defense work. I’ve handled a number of complex cases involving the illegal removal of a child from Illinois. Reuniting a parent with their child is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work. Community involvement: After joining private practice, I looked for ways to continue supporting the nonprofits I previously worked for. I volunteer to take cases for Prairie State Legal Services and serve on its fundraising committee. I also serve on the board for the McLean County Mental Health and Veterans specialty court. I also recently joined the Child Protection Network board. Among your friends and family, what are you famous for? Choosing one thing that I am famous for is a challenge. The first thing most people notice about me is my beard, followed closely by my bowties. I’m also obsessed with fountain pens and read voraciously. Close friends know that my wife helped me catch two stray kittens behind my law office. We refer to the cats as our Attorneys at Claw and spoil them rotten. What is the best way to start your day? The best way to start the day is with a fresh fruit smoothie.

rently, I am working as an Associate Actuary for State Farm Life Insurance Company leading a project to redesign State Farm’s complete life insurance portfolio. During my tenure with State Farm, I have enjoyed contributing to multiple aspects of our life insurance products and operations, but what I take the most pride in is having helped build a department of actuaries that are not only very smart and capable, but also incredibly caring and kind. Community involvement: In 2015, I co-founded the Max’s Miles Foundation, a local non-profit which provides modified ride-on vehicles for children with special needs to help them achieve developmental goals and explore their world. I have also co-founded the annual Tee It Up! For The GFPD charity fundraiser here in Normal, which has raised nearly $375,000 for the Global Foundation for Peroxisomal Disorders, a non-profit organization supporting medical research focused on my son Max’s rare genetic disorder. In 2018, I helped spearhead the Harmony Park Project, a collaborative effort between four local non-profits and the city of Bloomington to build the area’s first accessible and inclusive playground. As co-chair of the project, I’ve helped raise more than $200,000 and hopefully increased public awareness of the need for a playground that meets the needs of all children in our community. I am also heavily involved at First Christian Church in Bloomington, where I have served as a deacon and youth group leader. Among your friends and family, what are you famous for? I think what I am famous for is my (often sarcastic) sense of humor. Life can be so serious and stressful that I’ve found the best way to overcome frustration is often to look for the humor and oddity of a situation. Humor has been instrumental in helping me overcome many of the trying circumstances that come with having a child who is ill. What is the best way to start your day? Most weekdays, I attend early morning workout classes and rush through my morning routine, but on the weekends I love to curl up in bed with my family while we all read together. We then head to the Farmers’ Market in downtown Bloomington where we have a habit of avoiding the fruits and vegetables and heading straight for the pastries and baked goods. What skill would you like to master? I would love to improve my tennis game. I’ve only recently started playing and enjoy the athleti-

cism and challenge of the sport. Plus, it’s an activity that you can enjoy throughout your lifetime. What are three interesting facts about you? I married my high school principal’s son. I met my husband, Todd, at an Illini football game and only afterwards realized the connection. I’ve always been grateful that I stayed out of trouble in high school! When I was younger, I wanted to be an attorney, but I lost my mock trial in 9th grade (badly) and decided I should probably pursue a different profession. I met Lady Gaga at a small burger restaurant in Chicago. She sat at the bar near us and was casually eating a burger and having a beer prior to her concert later that night at the United Center. What inspires you to be better? When our son was first diagnosed with peroxisomal biogenesis disorder, I was devastated and lost. However, I was quickly introduced to other mothers of children with complex medical needs that were not only surviving, but thriving. Seeing them find the strength to fight for their child has been the inspiration for so many of the projects for which I’ve been involved. What is the best compliment you have received? A mother recently told me that our conversation pushed her to fight for additional services for her son. Knowing that I’ve helped someone understand their own power and strength is very rewarding.

McLean County alumni committee member, Citizens’ Beautification Committee member for the city of Bloomington, American Heart Association Mission Advancement board member, ISU Delta Zeta philanthropy advisor, Bloomington Citizens’ Academy Bloomington 101 Fall of 2018. What is the best way to start your day? I recently adopted a little dog from Wish Bone Canine Rescue named Lucy. I am not a morning person, however have found that there is no better way to start my day than to walk her first thing every morning! What skill would you like to master? I have two skills I would greatly love to master. The first one being public speaking. I heard once that people have a bigger fear of this over their own death, and I have to say I fall into that category. Secondly, I’d like to master golfing. I love going out and golfing in the summer, but always hope very few people are on the course to witness my game! What fictional place would you most like to visit? I would love to go to one of the parties hosted by Jay Gatsby in the Great Gatsby. Who inspires you to be better? I have been fortunate to be inspired by so many people I’ve met during my lifetime. I often look up to individuals that are community- and leadership-driven. Those that display a high level of integrity and humility inspire me the most. I believe it is important no matter what position or authority someone holds, that they treat everyone as they would like to be treated. I strive to live by this and inspired by leaders that do the same.

Zach Dietmeier

I can. I’m a proud two-time graduate of Illinois State University, serve on the advisory board for the School of Kinesiology and Recreation’s Graduate School, and I broadcast for Redbird Athletics on the side. Most importantly to me, I serve as a small group leader and member of Christ Church PCA in Normal. What is the best way to start your day? I wake up around 5:45 and proceed to get a workout done. I follow my exercise with quiet time for a daily devotion/reflection. I usually cap my morning prep by listening to podcasts while I eat breakfast. I usually also find time to squeeze in a perusal of the Wall Street Journal and The Athletic. What skill would you like to master? I’m trying to learn Spanish, Greek, and American Sign Language right now (yes, overambitious but stimulating) so that I can communicate with different groups. I am muy mediocre at Spanish, όχι πολύ καλά at Greek (not great), and just learning the alphabet and basic words in ASL. It’s good to have goals. What fictional place would you most like to visit? Wayne Manor/The Bat Cave. Tell your friends about it. What is the best compliment you have received? Working in media and economic development, you don’t receive a ton of public praise; you certainly hear all the bad things you’ve done, but you rarely know when people like what you’re doing. The best compliments, for me, often come in the form of conversations I overhear -praising our community’s vibrancy. As a communications professional, I know my work is worth it when people celebrate successes and share accurate depictions of what’s going on locally.

Age: 37 Business: CPG Printing & Graphics Title: Operations Manager Career highlights and/or accomplishments: In August, I celebrate 17 years employed in my family business, CPG Printing & Graphics. At this time I oversee the dayto- day operations of the business and manage all of the art files both received and created by the business. In the span of my career I have been fortunate to work alongside my parents who have modeled depth in customer service – beyond a simple thank you. They have always shown me how important it is to do what you love and caring for customers and the work we provide is key to success over the long term. Community involvement: Bloomington-Normal is where I grew up and where I’m proud to be raising my own children. My deepest desire is to show my children selfless love, concern for others and a spirit of giving. Peace and quiet in the wee hours of the day before anyone else is awake. Among your friends and family, what are you famous for? I had to ask my friends and family – this question almost seems like a brag to me but they all responded with generosity. If asked to help, to serve, to give, to be part of … I rarely say no. Giving is my first response – and I point back to my family roots, my parents and the

I trained in ballet in Scotland for several weeks with the Royal Scottish Ballet as a teenager. Who inspires you to be better? My kids. Every single day. What is the best compliment you have received? The best compliment I have ever gotten was when someone took the time to contact me and compliment my kids behavior. I don’t take all the credit for their manners – it takes so much help to raise kids – but I definitely take delight that out of my earshot they are the humans I would hope they would be … and then some.

The first trip was in January 2009 to Lima, Peru, and they’ve sent 25 students abroad for service during winter break every year since then. Receiving the Break Away Staff Member of the Year national award for advisement of ISU Alternative Breaks program in 2011. Co-chairing the ISU/ Town of Normal Neighborhood Action Team where we developed the three-tiered intervention strategies to address student behavioral concerns in the neighborhood, presenting that at the International Town Gown Association national conference and being recognized by ISU’s Division of Student Affairs with the Outstanding Innovation By A Team award. Being the first dedicated staff person at ISU to facilitate and support partnerships between community organizations and faculty for mutually beneficial service-learning experiences through the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning. Community involvement: Former Community Health Care Clinic board member. Former nine-year member of Bloomington-Normal Japanese Sister Cities Commission including 50th anniversary chair and final two years as commission chair, recognized in 2017 as Honorary Citizen and International Goodwill Ambassador by the city of Asahikawa. Volunteer presenter for Youth Global Citizen on Strengths Finder and strengths based leadership. What skill would you like to master? Photography. What are three interesting facts about you? My birthday is Halloween. I took my first plane flight when I was 19 to Japan. I would one day like to confidently say that I have watched every episode of “Law & Order” (the original), I’d guess I’m 80 percent of the way to the goal which is pretty good for 20 seasons. Who inspires you to be better? My son.

Age: 32 Business: McLean County Farm Bureau Title: Assistant Manager Career highlights and/or accomplishments: One of my major projects involves working with a team of volunteers to facilitate an education exhibit each year at the county fair. In 2011, our exhibit received national recognition from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions as well as the American Farm Bureau Federation. In 2012, I completed Leadership McLean County, a program of the Chamber of Commerce designed to equip, train and engage business professionals in various aspects of the community. I was honored to receive the Emerging Leader in Agriculture Award from the McLean County Chamber of Commerce in 2015. I recently completed the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program as a member of the class of 2018 and now serve as representative to the alumni board. Community involvement: Service is an important part of how I choose to spend my time. I volunteer regularly with McLean County

Habitat for Humanity. In 2014, I started getting involved in the fundraising aspects of the program as a member of the Women Build Committee and I currently serve as chair. I have also travelled to Juarez and Acuna, Mexico, several times to build homes with an organization called Casas por Cristo. I attend East White Oak Bible Church and volunteer with the children’s ministry and serve on the women’s ministry team. I’m also involved with a group that provides support and community for international students. What is the best way to start your day? The best way to start my day would be going for a morning run and then breakfast with a good cup of coffee followed by unhurried time for devotional reading and prayer. Even better would be if I were camping out in the mountains or watching the sunrise over a lake snuggled up in a blanket next to a campfire. Among your friends and family, what are you famous for? I would venture to guess that I am most well-known among family and friends for cooking and baking. I learned how to make cookies before I could read. I like trying new recipes and creating some of my own. I’m usually pretty successful, although I’ve had a few infamous flops – just ask my family about yogurt bread. A close second might be my love of music and musicals including my repertoire of random song lyrics. I’m also a pretty competitive card and game player, especially when it comes to Dutch Blitz, Bananagrams and Mancala. What skill would you like to master? If time were no consideration, there are several skills I would like to master. I hope one day to be able to hone my pie making skills to match my mom’s proficiency at a perfectly flaky crust. Achieving fluency in a second language would also be pretty high on my bucket list along with learning to play the guitar and/or violin. What are three interesting facts about you? My initials represent the beginning, middle and end of the alphabet (AMZ). I grew up on a farm in west central Illinois near a small town called LaHarpe and my graduating class consisted of 39 students. Even though I attended the same school from kindergarten through 12th grade I had three different mascots due to co-ops and consolidations. My college major was agricultural communications – and no that doesn’t mean I learned how to talk to corn, although it does have ears. Essentially, it’s a journalism degree specialized to write about agriculture. What fictional place would you most like to visit? I have a long list of amazing and beautiful places I would like to visit in real life including the Grand Canyon, Great Wall of China and Machu Picchu. If I had to choose a fictional place, I would maybe say Rivendell from Lord of the Rings, Wonderland or Narnia. Who inspires you to be better? I’m inspired by those who seek to remedy injustice, protect the vulnerable and give sacrificially. I am also inspired by those who overcome seemingly insurmountable odds or failures. I have a friend from college who is battling cancer that is treatable but not curable. I am inspired by her courage, steadfast hope, joyful perspective and honesty in sharing her journey. I would be remiss not to credit my parents and grandparents for their examples of faith, hard work and generosity that inspire me. One of my grandmothers passed away a little more than a year ago and as I have reflected on her legacy, she inspires me to be joyful, kind and gracious. What is the best compliment you have received? I think the best compliment I have ever received is being told I am genuine.

Local Culture T

hrough its many forms, the arts give people an opportunity to express themselves and brings people of different cultures and backgrounds together. If you look deeper into BN’s culture scene you’ll find a vibrant performing arts community. Whatever your favorite genre or style, Bloomington-Normal has a performance outlet for you.

Well-loved and highly respected, the Illinois Symphony Orchestra continues to provide residents of Central Illinois with beautiful music and stirring concerts. The ISO performs at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts. Their 20182019 season includes performances celebrating the Bicentennial, Holiday Pops and Disney in Concert.

Community Players Theatre, Heartland Theatre and Prairie Fire Theatre all have a long tradition of providing the residents of McLean County a chance to show off their theatrical talents. With their mixed season of plays and musicals, these community theaters have something for everyone. Upcoming productions include Little Women, A Doll’s House, and The Wedding Singer.

The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts is the centerpiece of the city’s Cultural District. It features a 1,200-seat auditorium and a multipurpose ballroom. The BCPA plays host to an annual season of nationally acclaimed touring artists, comedians and Broadway shows. The BCPA just announced its new season: at Whose Live Anyway?, enjoy a completely improvised show of games, skits and songs. If Broadway shows are more your style, get your tickets to see Elf, The Sound of Music or Rock of Ages, and the Russian National Ballet will perform one of the most popular ballets ever created, Swan Lake.

Braden Auditorium at Illinois State University will host numerous entertainment events throughout the year, including Newsboys and The Magic of Adam Trent. Their Center for the Performing Arts and Illinois Wesleyan University’s McPherson Theatre showcases the talent of their students.

For a complete list of events happening in our area, head to our website at VisitBN.org or contact Brie Lohr, Communications and Marketing Manager, at brie@visitbn.org.

In downtown Bloomington, Grossinger Motors Arena offers plenty of entertainment options, including concerts, comedians and ice shows. In November, truTV’s Impractical Jokers will make a stop to the arena on their Cranjis McBasketball World Comedy Tour.

‌Story and Photos by Deanna Frautschi It seems people either love or hate their backyard squirrels. Fox squirrels, the largest in Illinois, are the most common around here. Weighing in at about two pounds, they are very adaptable to wooded and residential areas. As I have discovered, they will eat about anything. In the wild, this often means acorns, hickory nuts, walnuts, berries and insects. They also enjoy the mix of corn, birdseed and nuts I put out for them and other critters. When it comes to figuring out how to get food from bird feeders, even “squirrel-proof ” ones, many of them seem to have master’s degrees. This fall, many will bury nuts and then try to remember where they buried them in the spring. Although they are smart and can be very entertaining, the one thing I can’t understand is why they can’t figure out how to make it across the road safely.

A Leader I Admired I met him in 1960 when I tried to budge ahead in the cafeteria line. He buttonholed me later, away from other students, We don’t do that here. He told the coaching staff, We win with humility, we lose with dignity, we don’t berate the referees. Female faculty and girls were treated with respect; if you bullied a classmate expect a session in the office.

For my Grade School Principal

His eyes were blue stars twinkling in a vast purple sky. His voice, though raspy as sandpaper, put students at ease. Even today, I recall him fondly as a role-model. Mr. Atteberry, long gone to his reward, still buttonholes me, when I try to budge the line, I hear him say, We don’t do that here. by Michael Escoubas

Millennials Change Up the Freezer Aisle- Among other “things”

I

t seems that everywhere you look today, it’s almost impossible to avoid hearing or reading stories about Millennials. We have all heard about how they are making huge strides and taking the lead in business, politics, real estate, philanthropy, and more. But what you might not have heard or noticed is Millennials are even shaping your grocery store. That’s right… the grocery store. Like the Baby Boomers in their day, Millennials are the largest proportion of any generation in the United States, and they are bringing their unique characteristics and viewpoints with them. The result? A world completely reshaped by this up and coming generation. Just how are Millennials shaping today’s world, beginning in the freezer aisle? Read on to find out more. Frozen foods are suddenly hot again (no pun intended) and Millennials are the ones creating this trend. After declining for several years, the freezer aisle has suddenly become a hot spot in today’s grocery stores. Everything from breakfast waffles to frozen dinner entrees are rising in popularity, even though they seem to be a far cry from trendy foods, such as kale or quinoa. So why are Millennials flocking to the freezer aisles? Even with their particular tastes, Millennials are embracing frozen foods, which are more convenient and much less expensive than takeout or eating out and offer portion control that is hard to match anywhere else. And, for the first time in five years, the volume of frozen foods sold is growing, with sales estimated at upwards of $53 billion.

So, if Millennials are having this type of impact at the grocery story, what kind of changes are they making in other historically traditional industries, such as commercial real estate? Millennials and Gen Xers are already making their mark in commercial real estate at a time when it is needed. The National Association of Realtors Commercial Member Profile reported the median age of a commercial real estate agent as 60 years old (whew, I’m just under), prompting companies throughout the industry to seek out young professionals, including Millennials. And they’re bringing with them their ideas of work life balance, work space, and more, new ideas, forcing the industry to evolve. Here are 3 ways Millennials are impacting commercial real estate, and we are seeing this in Bloomington as well: 1. Working remotely More than any generation before them, Millennials are pushing their employers to allow them to work remotely. In fact, in 2017, more than 75% of Millennials reported wanting the ability to work when and where they see fit. And not only do they desire this flexibility, they also feel that it boosts their productivity. As telecommuting technologies become better and better, remote work will become more feasible for more workers, promising to change corporate culture throughout various industries, including real estate sales. 2. Fluency in technology Millennials are the generation most fluent in technology to date. And, as these younger workers continue to join the ranks of other commercial real

estate professionals, the industry will increasingly feel the pressure to adopt new and emerging technologies. Technology will be a game changer and will change how we deliver information to our real estate community. The generation gap in technology is evident and will continue even when the Millennials are in their 60’s. 3. Redefining the workspace When working from the office, rather than working remotely, Millennials have very different ideas for workspaces than the previous generations. Rather than closed off offices, Millennials tend to prefer open and shared spaces that allow for collaboration. And, as a result, they are forcing the real estate industry to rethink space concepts more than ever before. As Millennials continue to make up an even larger portion of the workforce, these trends on shopping, work space, and leisure will likely continue to force changes in the commercial real estate markets. JANM.MURPHY

DEBORAHHALPERIN TITLE: Director, Illinois Wesleyan University Action Research Center CAREER HIGHLIGHTS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Since launching the IWU Action Research Center (ARC) in 2006, I have been able to shape the direction of this important campuscommunity initiative. I love my job! ARC custom designs co-curricular projects that challenge students to apply their classroom learning and develop leadership skills. We are especially proud of our partnership with the West Bloomington Revitalization Project (WBRP) which showcases how universities and neighborhoods can work together in meaningful ways. Based on our success, I have done a TEDx Talk, published a book chapter about service learning and been a speaker at numerous local and national conferences on community engagement, action research, neighborhood revitalization, community development and youth empowerment. VISION

FOR

LEADERSHIP: Listen to the community and lead from our strengths. I teach students that we never approach a community by asking: What is broken here and how can I fix it for you? We use an assetbased model where we ask: What is your vision for this community and how can we bring value? When you see a community because of its needs,

it looks needy. When you see a community for its strengths, it looks strong. LEISURE TIME DIVERSIONS AND FAVORITE STRESS BUSTER: Being with my family: my husband, Greg, and our three children: Griffin (16), Tess (13), and Leo (10). We enjoy traveling, cooking, and volunteering together. CHARITY OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Board/former board: WBRP, Milestones Early Learning Center, Founders’ Grove Neighborhood Association, YWCA, Conexiones Latinas, Wolf Park, Beyond the Books; volunteer with many nonprofits and special events.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND/OR ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Dr. Murphy’s career spans over 30 years in higher education. She earned her doctorate in nutrition research from the University of Nebraska in 1986. She then joined Illinois State University faculty and began her first administrative role three years later. She currently serves as the university’s senior vice president. Her roles have also included assistant dean, associate dean, dean, department chair, and director of Campus Dining Services. Dr. Murphy has numerous publications and funded research grants, and has won several awards for outstanding teaching, research and service including, most recently, the Phyllis Memken Outstanding Teacher Award and the University Distinguished Service Award. She currently serves as an accreditor for the Higher Learning Commission.

VISION FOR LEADERSHIP: There are three things that are essential to strong leadership: 1) you must have a passion for the institution you serve: 2) you must care about those you lead; and 3) you must be willing to work harder than anyone else in the room. LEISURE TIME DIVERSIONS AND FAVORITE STRESS BUSTER: Dr. Murphy enjoys traveling with her husband, Scott, and spending time with her adult children and her mom. She is an avid runner who annually completes several half- and full-marathons. CHARITY OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Dr. Murphy is an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, having served on the Lay Board of Directors and the School Parent Advisory Board. She also taught Sunday School and Adult Bible Study for many years. She has been a volunteer and mentor for the Multicultural Leadership Program, and was on the board which helped establish the Advocate-IWU-ISU Employee Child Care Center. She then served on the board and chaired the curriculum committee until 2012. Dr. Murphy also served on the Parent Board of the Laboratory Schools and is on the Board of Directors for the Stevenson Speaker Series. She has raised money through Team in Training to support cancer research and through a local running group for organizations such as the McLean County Autism Society.

LEANNSEAL TITLE: Vice President of Sales and Marketing for The Snyder Companies CAREER HIGHLIGHTS AND/OR ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Due to changes in the hospitality industry in the ‘90s, I was able to persuade the owners of the Snyder Companies to hire me as a Director of Sales at Eastland Suites Hotel in Bloomington. Within six months I was able to sell enough hotel rooms to take them from 38 percent to 88 percent occupancy. My career flourished as I laid the groundwork for our company to have sales managers at every hotel that we own. We currently have 20 amazing sales, catering and directors who happen to be 95 percent women. I am proud that I was able to be a part of the foundation to hire, train and mentor these managers throughout the last 22 years that I have been with Snyder Companies. A more recent highlight would be in 2012 when I was asked to join ownership at the Snyder Companies. Hotel bookings were slow due to the economy, so I was asked to create a cleaning company in case we had to lay off our hotel housekeepers. We could keep them employed and return them to the hotels. I created the plan, the budget and the brand Go Green Commercial Cleaning Services and loved every second of it. We started with three employees and now have more than 50 employees and a million-dollar budget. In the next year we plan on expanding to Peoria and Champaign. VISION FOR LEADERSHIP: I am driven to remind our employees to succeed not only in their careers but also in cultivating strong families and in making meaningful contributions to our community. I believe good leadership looks at the past, present and future to continue making appropriate changes in life that better everyone. When dealing with today’s realities we need to be quick to think, able to adapt to new technologies and personalities, and sadly, we now need to always keep the safety of the ones we care about top of mind. I do

live by the creed “Work hard and play hard” and sometimes when we are lucky, it happens at the same time. LEISURE TIME DIVERSIONS AND FAVORITE STRESS BUSTER: When life gets tough I get going … literally. I love to travel and let new surroundings carry me away to peaceful times and better attitude. Who can be stressed while lying on the beach, whether it is Cabo San Lucas or the North Shore in Chicago? I also like to return to my hometown to get my sanity tank refilled. Nothing heals the soul like going home to the place you grew up and seeing the family that has been your biggest supporters. Or sometimes, in my case, a real-life reminder to “suck it up, Buttercup” and remember to be grateful for the stress and problems I have compared to so many others. My secret leisure time indulgence is watching the Bravo channel when I finally get to sit down at home. It’s mindless entertainment and I enjoy the time to watch all the “Housewives” knowing their problems and relationships are a lot worse than mine. CHARITY OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I learned my community involvement path from Bob and Julie Dobski when I worked for them as their McDonald’s marketing manager in the ‘90s. I have probably been involved with every charity in the McLean County area because of them and learned so much from it. In the past few years these are a few of the organizations I have been proud to be part of: Leadership McLean County graduate; McLean County Chamber of Commerce Board Member and Executive Board Member Illinois State University Cinco De Mayo Fundraising for Women’s Athletics captain; board member for the American Heart Association; table captain for the YWCA Circle of Women; and Economic Development Council Board member and Assessment Task Force.
