Presleys’ top competition for the last 40 years has been the Baldknobbers Jamboree (located just a block east on the 76 Strip). The Baldknobbers were the first show in town as the founding family — the Mabes — began performing on the Branson lake front in 1959. The Presleys opened the first theater on the Strip in 1967. It is a longtime rivalry that may take an interesting twist in the upcoming season. The Presleys are increasingly well-known on RFDTV for their family-friendly country music show which includes guests like Rhonda Vincent & The Rage and the Oak Ridge Boys. The Baldknobbers will soon star in their own reality TV show Branson Famous.
One of our most-asked questions regarding the town’s holiday season is, “When does Christmas start in Branson?” Other comments include, “We thought it would be quiet in November!” as well as “What’s open in December?” That last question is typically from guests arriving in the second or third week of the month expecting to see Branson going full-blast in the Christmas season and instead running into locked doors and “Closed for the Season” The Baldknobbers Jamboree Show signs. Fiddler Wayne Massengale was recently voted Fiddle Player of the Year by the Branson Terry Music Awards. Tenor Luke Menard — who was introduced to millions in the 2008 season of American Idol — is now part of New South, the show’s award-winning quartet. If you’re there on Friday night, be sure to stick around for the late-night show. Beginning at 10:30PM, the hour-long show is produced for radio and TV and features a number of Branson entertainers as guest stars. Speaking of late nights, if you’re in town and looking for a great local hangout, Vintage Paris across the bridges in downtown Branson (and located on the south end of downtown Hollister) is the place to go. Owned by a young couple — Matt and Jessica Farmer — this unique coffee shop is one part local hipster hangout, two-parts family atmosphere. Expect to find College of the Ozarks music students strumming guitars, Bible study kids in a corner discussing Tolkien or C. S. Lewis, and some of the finest pour-over

coffees in the state. Vintage Paris stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and is closed Sundays. Over all the hubbub and high atop Mount Branson, the Adoration Scene is lit each night, celebrating the birth of Jesus and our real reason for the season. As those of us here in town simply try to keep up with the shows — and keep out of the traffic — it is easy to forget that other places do not have the freedom of live nativities, of manger scenes in public spaces, of Christmas hymns echoing through theaters, or entertainer after entertainer mentioning their Christian faith from stage. As we hurtle into an uncertain future, it is seasons like these, in a place like Branson, that helps remind us of the importance of faith, of family and of one another.
