Editor’s Message: Looking back on the month of May, one fact stands out from the rest of Key Club information: Our Key Club has been very active in service! In this newsletter, I will be identifying and providing follow-ups to the different service events that have occurred, with some help from guest authors-so keep your eyes open! I guess it’s true what they say-April showers bring May hours! Your Editor, Yang Fu
President’s Message To PHS Key Club: The school year is arriving at a surprisingly quick end, but we still have several volunteer opportunities approaching. The monthly daycare visit, Relay for Life, Redstock, and Junior Class Project are all important events that require your help! If you are interested in participating in any of the aforementioned events, feel free to contact any officer through Facebook, email, or in person.
Thank you for welcoming the new officers and helping the club transition smoothly. Please continue to participate in events and give back to the community—be sure to register for Key Club this fall and hand in your dues! With that said, have a safe and relaxing summer vacation. Sincerely, Lizzie Tu 2014-2015 Key Club President
The Sophomore Class Project By ANNE CHENG| GENERAL MEMBER| SOPHMORE CLASS PROJECT LEADER
On May 17th, the Sophomore Class Project took place at the Parsippany Day Care center. A small group of high schoolers banded together with the Kiwanis members to help clear out pieces of buried tarp in addition to a path in the play area. This was all to help prepare the play area for the new playground that will be built, and our Key Club can say that we had a hand in this fulfilling project. Thanks to all who came for their hard work!
The Day Care Project By CHRIS YANG | CORRESPONDING SECRETARY| DAY CARE PROJECT LEADER
The Day Care Project is an ongoing Key Club project that is open to all members of the club. It consists of 10 members, general or officers, going to the Parsippany Daycare on a monthly basis. At the daycare, the volunteers interact with the children, help the teachers, and perform any tasks that the daycare needs the volunteers to do. This project is mutually fulfilling for the volunteers and the daycare. The volunteers are able to help serve their community whilst having fun; likewise, the children enjoy having a "sibling-figure" to play with, and the teachers always appreciate a helping hand.
Pennies for Patients From Monday, May 5th, to Friday, May 9th, our Key Club participated in Pennies for Patients, a program hosted by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Pennies for Patients aims to raise money for people who have blood cancers. Key Clubbers volunteered to ask for donations during their lunch periods and after school. Overall, the amount raised totaled $213.97. Great job guys! Our efforts have paid off!
EliMiNaTe Week
Coinciding with the week of fundraising for Pennies for Patients was Eliminate Week. The Eliminate Project is the District Project for the 2014-2015 service year. During the second week of May, Key Clubbers showed their support of this cause by wearing blue, selling the Eliminate hands to fundraise money for this project, and participating in Eliminate Week. Key Clubbers were very happy to support Eliminate Week, and I can safely say the District Project is off to a great success!
Relay for Life
Relay for Life This Saturday, May 31th, Key Clubbers gathered in Smith Field Park to participate in Relay for Life, which is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Remembering those whom have been lost to cancer, and honoring those whom are still courageously battling their respective diseases, Relay for Life allows an entire community to come together and lend emotional and monetary support.
K Family Night By PRIYA LAD | HISTORIAN
On Wednesday, May 7th, most of our Key Club officers joined together to attend K Family Night. We were not only introduced our club to the Kiwanis board members and clubs around the Parsippany Troy Hills area but also learned about other clubs as well.
