Several voters said they found it difficult to choose winners. Some of the comments from voters alluded to the inspirational quality of the works. “All great submissions this year, very hard to choose. I love this type of contest - it's inspiring

The National Indo-American Association for Senior Citizens Inc., New York, held a daylong conference on seniors May 21 at the Indian-American Kerala Cultural and Civic Center in Elmont, New York, in collaboration with Kerala Center, Shanti Niketan, and New York Psychiatry and Cognitive Care, attracting some 45 people whose participation brought to limelight various important issues affecting seniors and their families. Newly-elected New York State Senator, Tod Kaminsky, spoke about his commitment to seniors’ issues and underscored the importance of services for seniors and their benefits. The North Jersey chapter of GOPIO International was inaugurated in East Hanover, New Jersey, at the Fairbridge Hotel May 22. This would be a valuable addition to the already existing Central Jersey chapter based in

Edison, organizers said. Chapter President Dhiraj Solanki said the objective was to engage more of the non-resident Indian community and involve youth and young professionals in the chapter activities, a press release said. Several elected leaders and officials were present at the launch. The chief guest, India’s Deputy Consul General in New York Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, promised to work closely with the new chapter on issues faced by the Indian community in North Jersey. “The consulate has improved the response and turnaround time for visa, passport and OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India)

cards services, because of feedback from GOPIO chapters and GOPIO International,” Mohapatra said. “When GOPIO brings any matter to us, we look at it and work on it right away," he added, noting that some 1.8 million people of Indian origin live in northeastern U.S. New Jersey Assemblyman Raj Mukherji who represents District 33, praised GOPIO for its outreach to the estimated 380,000 people of Indian origin living in New Jersey. New Yorker Jairam Hathwar Named Spelling Bee Co-champion

By a Staff Writer airam Hathwar, a 13-yearold from Painted Post, New York, was named cochampion of the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee competition held at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, May 26. The 7th grader studying in the Alternative School for Math and Science, a private school in Corning, New York, shared the honor with Nihar Janga, 11, of Austin, Texas. His victory at the 89th Scripps National Spelling Bee came after making it to the final along with 44 equally talented contestants and clinching the title in the 39th round after 24 rounds of head-tohead competition with co-champion Janga. The Scripps National Spelling Bee organizers made it tougher this year, introducing in the final rounds words derived from trickier and more obscure languages like Irish Gaelic, Maori and Mayan, and forced them to spell three times as many words as in years past. Nonetheless, he came out with flying colors as did the other co-champion. Indeed, there were few tense moments during the final moments of the competition on the stage as Jairam spelled incor-

rectly twice, but then the other competitor also did the same and so the competition continued without break till both were declared winners. Jairam mother Dr. Roopa Hathwar said after the victory that she was worried when her son made mistakes. “When he was out, we thought that was it! But he got two chances! All I can say is that it’s God’s grace —

divine intervention,” she was quoted as saying. “I am really so excited!” Not only the champions won a trophy, they were to get a trip to the ‘Live with Kelly and Jimmy Kimmel’ shows, $40,000 cash, and a $2,500 savings bond. By his own admission Jairam, whose brother Sriram competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2008, 2009, and in 2011,

when he tied for 6th place, in 2013 when he tied for 3rd place and again in 2014 when he became co-champion, wanted to step into his brother’s shoes. “When [my brother] won, it was just an amazing feeling, and I wanted to experience that myself,” said Jairam who tied for 22nd place in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2015. "Feldenkrais," a medical term used for a system of aided body movements to increase bodily awareness and ease tension. Janga, immediately followed by spelling "gesellschaft," which means a rationally developed mechanistic type of social relationship characterized by impersonally contracted associations between persons. With both of them correctly spelling the words, they were declared co-champions instead of a solo champion. "Hathwar and Janga both proved their depth of knowledge of root words and word origins to master round after round of some of the most challenging words in the English language," Rich Boehne, chairman, president and CEO of The E.W. Scripps Company, said Hathwar represented Corning Rotary Club in Corning, New York, in the competition. Besides being a golf fan, Jairam follows politics and elections devoutly. He also travels to India annually during the summer, and this year he is looking forward to seeing Mount Everest. At school, Jairam is especially interested in math and social studies. He hopes to attend Harvard University to study medicine. For the first time ever, the cochampions were expected to visit Wall Street to ring the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange June 1.

Undocumented South Asians Placed In Bodybags During Expulsion By a staff writer group of South Asian migrants have alleged that they were forcefully placed in “body bags” and shocked with Tasers by Immigration and Customers Enforcement officers while they were being deported from the United States to the natives in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. These people were repatriated on an ICE charter flight that departed from Mesa, Arizona, after they failed to gain asylum or otherwise secure legal status, according to a report in The Guardian. U.S. Edition May 27. The report said that the allegations have raised red flags for immigration advocates and attorneys. Seven of the detainees who had been on the flight and interviewed by the newspaper, have detailed their claims of abuse by ICE. They alleged that about 15 deportees were placed in what they described as were body bags believed to refer to the “restraint” or “security” blankets occasionally used by ICE. The phone interviews and email were conducted with the help of Queens-based Desis Rising Up and Moving that fight for social and economic justice for low-income and undocumented South Asian wage workers in New York City. The detainees alleged that a group of ICE officers would pin them to the ground, sometimes face-down before their bodies

A

would be tightly wrapped in the security blanket and fastened with a series of belts. Limbs restrained, the deportee could then be carried on to the plane. The allegations were, however, denied by ICE. In an email to the newspaper, an ICE official was quoted as saying that the officers had used “minimal force” during boarding after “approximately a dozen of the detainees refused to comply with officers’ instructions and became combative.” About 235,000 people were reportedly deported by ICE last year. Charter flights are sometimes used when a large number of detainees are being returned to the same region. The report said since charter flights happen behind closed doors, and deportees have little contact with not-for-profit organizations or lawyers once they return home, it is difficult to determine whether such accounts of force are a rarity, said advocates and lawyers. The report quoted Paromita Shah, associate director of the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild as saying that she does not know how frequently ICE engages in this kind of conduct during removals. “I actually don’t know. I’m not sure if any of us do,’ she told The Guardian. “These allegations, if true, are extremely troubling and must be investigated,” Shah added. In a statement after the report was published DRUM said it is working “to push for congres-

Latest Flushing Robbery May Have Link To Earlier Holdups From News Dispatches

T

he latest robbery in a Dunkin’ Donuts in Flushing, New York, May 22 has the police look into a possible link between a string of robberies in Queens and more than a dozen similar holdups of convenience stores on Long Island. New reports said quoting police that the suspect, who is at large, entered a Dunkin’ Donuts on 45th Avenue in Flushing at around 11:30 p.m. and flashed a knife before demanding an employee open the register. The suspect left with $600 in cash. “He took all the money and left in one minute. He was very quick,” CBS New York, quoted manager M.D. Kabir as saying. Investigators believe, the report said, the same man is responsible for two similar robberies —

one May 11 at a Carvel on Metropolitan Avenue in Forest Hills and another robbery of a Dunkin’ Donuts in Howard Beach May 25. Dunkin’ Donuts employee Suresh Patel said the suspect pressed a knife up to him before taking around money from the register. Police are looking into whether the suspect in the latest incidents is linked to more than 16 other robberies that have occurred in Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island. The report said quoting police that the suspect typically strikes when there are no customers on the premises and will typically wait nearby the targeted location before robbing the store. No one has been injured in any of the robberies. The suspect was described as a black man and about 5 feet 9 inches tall with a medium build.

in hiding for fear of being targeted by the police, traffickers, or people affiliated with the ruling Awami League party. Fahd Ahmed, DRUM Executive Director said Many of those likely deported were the same detainees who launched hunger strikes for freedom from

immigration detention centers last Fall out of fear of what would happen to them if they had to return to the countries they fled from and to bring attention to the discriminatory treatment they were receiving in detention and in immigration proceedings as South Asians or as Muslims.

Engineer To Get $7.5 Million In Settlement After Fall In Philadelphia Museum By Suman Guha Mozumder

hani Guthula may not have seen “The Gates of Hell”, one of the most famous sculptures by Auguste Rodin housed in the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia, Pa., but the engineer faced something akin to the sculpture’s title when he fell 38 feet through a glass attic floor of the museum in November 2012. Earlier this month, Guthula, an energy-efficiency engineer from Philadelphia, reached a $7.25 million in settlement in a court in Philadelphia after he sued the defendants, including the museum’s private security company, on various grounds. His attorneys at Saltz, Mongeluzzi, Barrett & Bendesky, P.C., said May 10 that a settlement has been reached in the Nov. 26, 2012 case when Guthula, 27, nearly died due to the fall at the museum. Guthula headed out onto the surface before suddenly plummeting to the floor 38 feet below. He fell while he was working for consulting contractor ICF International and had gone there to inspect the lighting fixtures in the museum that had opened to visitors after completing an extensive, $9 million renovation. The building’s surveillance cameras captured the graphic footage of Guthula’s fall. The settlement was reached May 6 just as the jury selection in the case was about to begin in Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas on Guthula’s numerous claims against the defendants, who allegedly were “collectively responsible” for the failure to protect Guthula from harm when he stepped onto the hazardous, unprotected glass floor. As a result of the fall, Guthula suffered multiple fractures and other traumatic injuries from head to toe and was hospitalized for more than 45 days, underwent more than 15 surgeries, and requires intensive lifelong medical care. The Rodin, which was

released as a defendant from the litigation, is owned and operated by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Larry Bendesky, a member of Guthula’s legal team at SMBB noted that one of the Rodin’s most famous sculptures is titled ‘The Gates of Hell’, and Guthula’s fall could have had the same title. “The chilling picture of Phani Guthula falling nearly to his death could have the same title; his life has been a living hell every day since his fall. His accident was totally preventable had those responsible for his safety just done their job,” Bendesky aid. Attorney David Kwass said that testimony at trial clearly would have demonstrated that the defendants failed miserably in their duty to protect Guthula. He said that guard railings installed to keep people off the

glass floor were not in place, security personnel who escorted him to the site were uninformed and inattentive, and there was no signage to warn against a fall hazard. “Mr. Guthula hopes that there are lessons learned by those who are responsible for workplace safety. The best plans and precautions are meaningless – as they were in his case – if they are not followed by everyone involved,” Kwass said. Defendants in the settlement were the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Allied Barton Security Services. The plaintiff was not going to assert claims at trial against L.F. Driscoll Construction Co., the museum’s renovation contractor or ElliottLewis Corp, the building maintenance contractor, according to a press release announcing the settlement

The Lahore Literary Festival

By Matt Schiavenza o many international observers, contemporary Pakistan is synonymous with political instability, poverty, and violent extremism — a reputation solidified by a March terror attack in Lahore that resulted in 70 deaths. But to Razi Ahmed, this perception of Pakistan is incomplete. “In New York and other Western cities, Pakistan’s cultural mosaic is collateral damage through viewing the country through a security lens,” he told Asia Blog in a recent interview. “Look beyond and there is a country teeming with creativity and cultural entrepreneurship.” It is this version of Pakistan that Ahmed had in mind when, in 2012, he launched the Lahore Literary Festival. Based in a Pakistani city famous for its concentration of writers and intel-

lectuals, the festival has become enormously popular across the country — and is now beginning to make its presence felt overseas, appearing at Asia Society in New York early May. The gathering featured musical performances and panel discussions, conducted in both English and Urdu, that covered education, arts, culture, and politics. The last panel, featuring New York Times columnist Roger Cohen, Pakistani journalist and author Ahmed Rashid, and journalist Kati Marton, focused on Pakistan’s relationship with the United States, which has been characterized by frequent tension in the 15 years since the September 11 attacks. Other panels dealt more squarely with developmental challenges. Nearly seven decades since its founding, Pakistan remains a poor country where an estimated 50 percent of the population remains illiterate; nearly 45 percent of Pakistan’s

children are malnourished. During a panel discussion covering education, Syed Babar Ali, a prominent businessman and philanthropist, cautiously referred to these deficiancies: “what is the point of giving laptops to students, who don’t have the mind or bodies to use them?” The other discussions were no less contentious — which, for Ahmed, is precisely the point of the festival. “Even if thorny questions are asked of celebrated authors or diplomats, it is done so through

a civil discourse where ideas triumph over ideologies,” he said. But the festival is more than just an examination of Pakistan’s challenges. On the evening of May 7, the popular singer Zeb Bangash performed in the opening act of the ceremony, and the Saami Brothers Qawwal concluded the festival with a raucuous performance on Sunday night, one causing spectators to rise from their seats. The performance, to Ahmed, is more proof of Pakistan’s cultural vibrancy. “There is a critical mass out

The Halal Guys presented a check of $30,000 to the LaGuardia Community College Foundation May 26, their 3rd gift to the institution, to support scholarships for students in need. he Halal Guys, popular New York City street-food vendor turned worldwide franchise, which has a strong following not just among South Asians in New York City, but also a wide and growing multi-ethnic fan base, donated $30,000 to LaGuardia Community College Foundation to support scholarships for students in need. This was their third contribution to the foundation. They were joined May 26, by representatives of their franchise partner company, Fransmart, which underwrote the gift to LaGuardia as part of a celebration for closing an international deal to expand The Halal Guys franchise to South Korea. In 2013, they gave $6,000; last year, they gave $7,000. The gifts support The Halal Guys Scholarship Fund at LaGuardia, which was established in 2013 and gives full-time students in good

academic standing $1,000 for two semesters of studies. Thus far, their support has gone to more than eight LaGuardia students. “The Halal Guys are the very best friends our college can have,” LaGuardia Community College President Gail O. Mellow is quoted saying in a press release. “They have been unwavering in their support of our students, and this very generous gift from their partner, Fransmart, will ease the financial stress of many of our students.” The Halal Guys have, for many years, operated a cart outside the LaGuardia Community College campus, and a friendship between a faculty member and Hesham Hegazy, The Halal Guys’ director of business and brand development, spurred their support of the college. “LaGuardia Community College students, faculty, and staff have been loyal supporters of our food cart on their campus, and so it felt right to give back by establishing The Halal Guys Scholarship Fund,” Hegazy said.

there in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Jamshoro, Multan, and other Pakistani cities that is experimenting with music, satire, cinema, visual art, poetry, and literature to counter rigidity and reactionary forces,” he said. The Lahore Literary Festival is one way to distill, focus, and promote this energy. And many have begun to take notice. “The presence of Lahore Literary Festival in New York is the most effective use of Pakistan’s soft power,” said Marton. – Asia Society

iyush Patel, 64, a New Jersey businessman, was inducted recently into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame. He was among ten inductees announced by RICH, April 28, under a wide range of categories from sports and education, to artists, lawyers, historians and architects. Patel was inducted under the category of “Business/Entrepreneur.” Patel, 64, has strong Rhode Island roots, dating back more than 30 years when he purchased two hotels in the Town of Narragansett –The Village Inn and Atlantic House, a press release from the RICH noted. He spent millions converting Cranston’s Park Theater into a Class A event center, rivaling any of the great theaters in Boston and Manhattan, it said, and credited him with creating numerous jobs in Rhode Island. “With ventures spread across varied industries like software, oil drilling, restau-

rants, electronics, chemicals, and hotels, Patel’s business empire easily tops $200 million in assets. A self-styled turnaround specialist for dying businesses, Patel has had no formal education in management, yet he has built a business empire with industries spanning the globe,” the organization said, also noting his philanthropic work in his native Gujarat and in the United States. Patel also supports charities throughout the United Sates, especially in Rhode Island, the RICH said. In 2010, Pi produced a play, “The Murder Trial of John Gordon,” which inspired Governor Lincoln Chafee to sign a pardon for an Irish immigrant unjustly executed in 1845. Recently, Patel provided the funding for a book about Lt. Robert E. Thorpe, a World War IHI fighter pilot from Cranston, who was captured by the Japanese in 1944, tortured, and beheaded. “Pi Patel is a most worthy candidate to take his place among the illustrious members of the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame--and the first native of India to achieve that distinction.”

Raga is a Sanskrit word that means “coloring.” In musical terms it represents a feeling or emotion. One of the characteristics of Indian music is the assignment of definite times of the day and night for performing raga melodies. Cinema Under A Bridge Provides Bollywood Escape For Delhi’s Poor By Sunil Kataria – NEW DELHI makeshift cinema hall under a 140-year-old bridge in the Indian capital is allowing poor rickshaw pullers and migrant laborers to escape daily hardship and sweltering heat into a world of Bollywood song, dance and romance. With the rusty iron floor of the bridge as its ceiling and some old rags acquired on the cheap from a nearby crematorium serving as curtains and floor mats, the cinema shows four films a day. Organizers pooled their savings to rent an old TV set and video compact disc player, and charge 10 rupees (15 U.S cents) admission - a hundredth of the price of entry at Delhi’s fanciest movie theaters. Mohammad Noor Islam, a junk dealer and one of the regulars at the cinema under the double-decker bridge over the Yamuna river, said it helps to keep them away from vices like

drugs and gambling. “Films are much better. Many men get hooked on gambling, drugs and alcohol and they pass their time by drinking or smoking,” he told Reuters Television.

“But some of us, who do not indulge in these vices, come here and watch films. We are addicted to films,” said Islam, who came to Delhi from the eastern state of West Bengal nearly four decades

ago as a 10-year-old boy. The dark and breezy interior of the cinema hall provides relief for daily laborers from their jobs on the city’s sweltering streets where temperatures have soared as high

as 47 Celsius (116.6 Fahrenheit) this month. “When we come to watch films, they help us forget our problems. I was tense earlier but when I sat down to watch the film I felt my tension easing,” said Manoj Kumar, a rickshaw puller from Bihar. After dark, the cinema hall becomes a night shelter providing comfort in the scorching heat. Ishfaq, one of the cinema’s cofounders, runs a small food stall nearby. He said it was an excellent place for people to unwind after hours of hard labor. “The place is wide and open, there is a cold and pleasant breeze here because it is so close to the river Yamuna - it feels like an air conditioner is on,” said Ishfaq, who offers meals for 5-10 rupees. On an average day, about a 100 people use the cinema hall to watch films, rest and catch up on some sleep. Ishfaq worries that the cinema, which operates illegally, might be shut down by the authorities. – Reuters

Girls Code In India To Tackle Challenges Of Slum Living By Rina Chandran – NEW DELHI dolescent girls in the Mumbai slum of Dharavi are battling the daily challenges they face, one mobile app at a time. Tutored on laptops donated by friends of Nawneet Ranjan, a filmmaker who set up a charity in Dharavi, the girls are embracing technology to confront issues ranging from their safety to garbage in the sprawling slum in India’s biggest city. “Girls and women suffer the most in a slum, as they often have no resources and are not

A

aware of their rights,” said Ranjan, who studied filmmaking in the United States before returning to Mumbai. “I wanted to teach the girls how to use technology to get ahead,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a bare room that serves as the classroom. About two dozen girls were seated on the floor, tapping at laptops or reading. The girls are building apps they hope will be used by slum dwellers to make their lives easier - by allowing them to send a distress call if a woman is being harassed, a message to civic authorities when garbage needs clearing, or to receive an alert

when it’s their turn at the communal water tap. India is one of the world’s largest software services exporters. Global and local technology companies hire tens of thousands of English-speaking college graduates every year at modern campuses in cities such as Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The spare room in Dharavi where Roshani, Ansuja, Sapna and Nahek learned to code is a far cry from those glass-andchrome offices and from global movements such as Girls Who Code and Girls in Tech, aimed at getting more women into technology. Ranjan’s Dharavi Diary proj-

ect began with 15 girls. It has grown to more than 200 now, and includes boys and mothers of the children, as well. “I like building apps. Knowing how to use a computer, to write code is important for getting a good job,” said Ansuja, a slight and articulate 15-year-old. “I want to build an app that can help fight child labour, because these are children younger than us and instead of studying, they have to work,” she said. After school every day, there are lessons in maths, science and arts besides computers, and a game of football most evenings in the playground

Nobel Laureate Satyarthi Says Companies Cannot Flourish On Child Slavery By Nita Bhalla – NEW DELHI ig corporations must do more to clean up their supply chains and ensure that there is no child labour involved in the products which they manufacture and sell, Nobel laureate and child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi said on Friday. From cosmetics and clothes to shrimp and smartphones, the supply chain for most products is often complex with multiple layers - whether in sourcing the raw materials or creating the final product - making it

B

hard to identify exploitation. Speaking at a conference on bonded labour in India, Satyarthi said a new anti-trafficking law being drafted by the government would hopefully make it harder for corporations to use child labour in their supply chains. “Every national or international corporate must adhere to national as well as international laws. Those who are working in India should know that they cannot continue to violate the laws of the land,” Satyarthi told journalists. “We have laws in this country and we will have another

clearer law on trafficking soon so then there would be much more robust law and mechanisms to deal with that.” A draft of a comprehensive new anti-trafficking law is expected to be unveiled in India on Monday which will aim to unify several existing laws, raise penalties for offenders as well as provide victims with rehabilitation and compensation. The law will also provide for the establishment of a central investigative anti-trafficking agency to coordinate and work between states and special courts to hear such cases. Nearly 21 million people globally are victims of forced

labour, an industry which generates $150 billion a year in illegal profits, says the International Labour Organization. The British charity AntiSlavery International on its website documents 122 products made by child labourers across 58 countries ranging from Latin America to Asia. These children might be employed at the start of the supply chain, forced into mines to extract gold, mica, diamonds and coal or made to toil in farms to produce commodities such as cotton, sugar, tea, coffee and cocoa. – Reuters

across the street. During the summer holidays, children stream in and out of the brightly-painted room all day. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made girls’ education one of his priorities, with a nationwide campaign. A long-delayed plan to redevelop Dharavi envisages tearing down the shacks and building apartments for the residents, who live beside open drains and with no running water. “They see so much every day - domestic violence, drug abuse, child abuse, poverty. Their parents are taxi drivers and domestic workers, and these kids are usually the first in the family to go to school,” said Ranjan. “But every family has at least one smartphone, and that’s why I thought of using technology. Technology is such a leveller, and it gives them such confidence,” he said. The girls picked the issues they wanted to address and built the apps in groups of four each, using open-source software. Their apps include one for women’s safety, one for water conservation and one on education. For Ranjan, watching the girls interact with visitors and showing off their apps on a tablet or mobile, is evidence that even limited resources can be put to use. “It’s frugal innovation at its best,” he said. “With the right resources and mentoring, they can do so much more. And these can be applied in slums, in cities everywhere.” – Reuters

JUNE 2016 VISA BULLETIN ANNOUNCES SIGNIFICANT RETROGRESSION FOR INDIA AND CHINA

By: Michael Phulwani, Esq., David H. Nachman, Esq. and Rabindra K. Singh, Esq.

T

he Department of State’s June 2016 Visa Bulletin has announced major retrogression in the Final Action cut off dates for India and China. Specifically, in June 2016, India EB2 Final Action cutoff date will retrogress to Octo ber 1, 2004, for the final issuance of immi grant visas. The India EB2 Final Action cutoff date stood at November 22, 2008, in the May 2016 visa bulletin. Thus, India EB 2 Final Action cutoff date will retrogress by more than four (4) years in June 2016. India EB3 will continue to move at the snail’s pace. The Final Action cutoff date for EB3 India will move from September 1, 2004 to September 22, 2004. Similar to India, EB2 Final Action cutoff for China will retrogress by 20 months to January 1st 2010 in June 2016. Like EB2, in June 2016, EB3 China Final Action cutoff will also retrogress from current August 15, 2013, to January 1, 2010. The DOS has cited “extremely high levels of Employmentbased demand for adjust ment of status cases filed with USCIS dur ing past two (2) months” as the reason for retrogression of the EB2 preference Final Action cutoff dates for India and China.

ect a bullish forward movement in the im mediate future for both India and China EB2 and EB3 preference categories. EB2 India Final Action cutoff date is expected to advance slowly, at a pace consistent with that of the India EB3 preference cut off date, during the last three (3) months of the fiscal year. The projection is much worse for the Chinese nationals as the ret rogressed Final Action cutoff is not likely to advance either in the EB2 or EB3 cate gory. Like the EB2 preference category, Final Action cutoff date for the FB4 category for both India and China will also ret rogress in June 2016. India FB4 Final Ac tion cutoff will backward from present July 22, 2003, to January 1, 2001. Likewise, China FB4 will retrogress from July 22, 2003, to January 1, 2003. While DOS is not in a position to project whether or not the China FB4 will advance until the end of current fiscal year, it is almost certain that India FB4 will not advance during the last quarter. For the reference of readers, included below is the Final Action Date Chart per the June 2016 visa bulletin for the employ mentbased preference cases and family sponsored preference cases.

COVER STORY

June 3, 2016

Rediscovering Roshan By Nivedita is struggle to overcome stammering during grown up years, broken marriage with childhood sweetheart Sussanne Khan and his ongoing legal battle with actress Kangana Ranaut has not changed Hrithik Roshan's positive outlook towards life. As he looks back, actor Hrithik Roshan sees himself as an evolved person, who inspite of experiencing highs and lows in his life, has still "soldiered on". “I constantly believe in evolving as a human being, an actor and a performer. As I look back, I see myself as an evolved person who has seen great highs and lows and still soldiered on,” Hrithik told IANS in an email interview. The actor is currently in news for his legal spat with Kangana. The two, who were apparently dating in the past, slapped a legal notice against each other for tarnishing their respective images in the public. Issues began when Kangana hinted at Hrithik being her “ex” when she said in an interview that she fails to understand "why exes do silly things to get your attention". The topic in discussion was Hrithik's hand in getting Kangana replaced in the project by Sonam Kapoor in “Aashiqui 3”. In an indirect dig to that, Hrithik had later tweeted: "There are more chances of me having had an affair with the Pope and any of the (I'm sure wonderful) women the media has been naming. Thanks but no thanks.” This set the stage for their legal

war. On being asked how his good or bad times have influenced him as an actor or as a human being, he chose to let it go unanswered, but said that while everybody wants to change something about their lives, they compromise with situation and time. “I believe if you are not rediscovering yourself and pushing boundaries, then you are not alive. Everybody wants to change something about their life, but they are either too afraid, too lazy, or too comfortable with the way things are,” he said. The actor is currently the brand ambassador of the watch brand Rado and recently launched the Swiss watchmaker's chocolate brown high-tech ceramic collection. Hrithik says that his ability to reinvent himself "in new roles resonates with the brand’s image to constantly innovate, making it a perfect fit". But at a time when some senior actors are facing criticism for choosing wrong brand endorsements, Hrithik says that he only works with

www.desitalk.com – that’s all you need to know

those brands that inspire him. “There is a high focus placed upon the importance of choosing a reliable, trustworthy celebrity to endorse or sponsor a company’s product, while still balancing the celebrity’s power to influence their consumers. And for me, I work with people and brands that inspire me. Our values and message need to be the same,” he told IANS. With time being such an important part in everybody's life, the father of two feels that he always tries to be committed to deadlines. “Quite often we hear of our busy schedules and insane shoot hours. Despite this, it’s important to manage to be punctual and stay true to one’s profession. I try to be very sincere and committed to my films and deadlines,” he said. Last seen on screen in 2014 released action film “Bang Bang!”, the actor is currently shooting for Ashutosh Gowariker's directorial “Mohenjo Daro". Also starring debutante Pooja Hegde and veteran actor Kabir Bedi, the movie is set in the ancient city of Mohenjo Daro in the era of the Indus Valley civilisation. The movie marks Gowariker's second collaboration with Hrithik after 2008 film "Jodhaa Akbar". For Hrithik, “doing a period drama is always a challenge”. “I am travelling back into time and it’s been a great journey and a great experience. The other movie ('Kaabil' directed by Sanjay Gupta and produced by Rakesh Roshan) is a love story-cumrevenge drama and it's shaping well,” said Hrithik. –IANS

‘Veerappan’ Makes A Lot Of Noise But Says Very Little By Shilpa Jamkhandikar am Gopal Varma, whose skill sets as a director have plummeted drastically in the last few years, falls further into the abyss by bringing together a bunch of bad actors in “Veerappan” and egging them on towards even more mediocrity. The film brings the minuscule acting talents of Sachiin Joshi and Lisa Ray to the table, where Varma adds his trademark loud decibel levels and wobbly camera to make a two hour-film that makes a lot of noise but says very little.

R

The budget cuts seem to have been severe in Varma’s first Hindi film in three years. His extras look like they belong to an 80s bandit film, as do the sets. The CGI in the film is Alif-Laila level, and Varma seems to have wasted no time or money putting together a coherent script for the film, a Hindi remake of his Kannada movie “Killing Veerappan”.

I Am A Greedy Actor, Says Vidya Balan

Based on events leading up to the death of sandalwood smuggler Veerappan who operated from the forests of South India, Varma manages to make this at best a one-dimensional tale about a police officer and his arch enemy. Joshi plays a brooding officer who makes it his life’s mission to hunt down Veerappan after the bandit brutally kills a fellow officer. He gets

help from Priya (Lisa Ray), the wife of his dead colleague, who acts as a spy to extract information about the smuggler’s whereabouts. Unfortunately, Ray looks like she is in a B-grade horror film for all the believability she brings to her role. She darts furtive looks or stands in a catatonic state for most of her screen time, and is responsible for most of the unintentional humor in the film. Joshi is not far behind in this department, and Sandeep Bhardwaj as the reed-thin, mustachioed Veerappan is reduced to a caricature of the popular folklore surrounding the real man. In 2000, Varma made a film whose villain was a bandit obviously inspired by Veerappan. At the time, “Jungle” wasn’t considered one of his better films, but after watching this latest addition to Varma’s filmography, you might be filled with an inexplicable longing for Fardeen Khan, Urmila Matondkar and Sushant Singh chasing each other in a jungle. – Reuters

I’m Just A Homo Sapien, After All: Kangana Ranaut By Durga Chakravarty –NOIDA er journey in filmdom has been a “roller-coaster ride”, and Kangana Ranaut likes it this way! Between the highs and lows of stardom, and amidst controversies, the National Award winning actress says being under a scanner constantly gets too much to handle at times because at the end of the day, she’s just a “Homo sapien”. Talking about her decade-long journey in Hindi films, Kangana told IANS: “It’s been quite an open book...we’ve all witnessed it together. So, it has been quite a roller-coaster ride and honestly I don’t want it to be any other way.” Of late, Kangana has been in the news for her legal spat with Hrithik Roshan. Does being under a constant watch by people bother her? “Well, I think sometimes, a bit. I think sometimes a distant approach to a human being despite or in spite of them being celebrities, is needed,” said the Himachal Pradesh-born actress, who has no role model. “I think there are no standards and parallels that I draw. There is no certain somebody that I want to live like or I would want to have a life similar to. So, my own standards is (are from) my own life. “It (the attention and controversies) does get a little too much at times, but, like I said, the most beautiful thing about life is that it keeps moving on.

H –MUMBAI ctress Vidya Balan says she is a greedy actor and doesn’t believe in restricting herself to Hindi film industry. “I wanted to do a Marathi film as I am from Mumbai...I was born and brought up here so, I know their culture. There couldn’t have been a first Marathi film for me better than this. I am looking at Marathi scripts. A few films didn’t work,” she said. “I am also doing a Malayalam film which is a biopic. I am a greedy actor. Wherever I will get a role, I will go,” Vidya told reporters during the song launch of “Shola jo bhadke” from “Ekk Albela”, her debut Marathi film. The actress, who was last seen in “Hamari Adhuri Kahani”, will be essaying the role of yesteryear Bollywood actress Geeta Bali in the film “Ekk Albela”. She said: “I was very nerv-

A

ous when I was offered this film. I don’t look like Geeta Bali but I tried to look like her. I hope I have done it decently.” “Ekk Albela” traces the journey of Bhagwan Dada’s film career as an actor and director, and Vidya’s role will be credited as a special appearance. Bhagwan Dada faced a lot of obstacles while making the musical “Albela” which had Geeta Bali in the lead. Vidya also shared that she was offered close to 10 biopics post the success of “The Dirty Picture”. She said: “After ‘The Dirty Picture’, I was offered eight to 10 biopics but since I had done ‘The Dirty Picture’, I wanted to do it later. Then I got this opportunity. But this is not a biopic on Geeta Bali. You don’t see all shades of her. I think I get dragged to real life stories.” Directed by Shekhar Sartandel, “Ekk Albela” also features Mangesh Desai. – IANS

“I think, when very humanly things are being discussed about us (celebrities)... About how can her hair twist in that way, or how can her nose run... These things get slightly little too much because I am just a Homo sapien like you call it,” added the 29year-old actress. If she has had successes in the form of “Fashion”, “Tanu Weds Manu” and “Queen”, there have also been movies like “Game”, “Rascals” and “Katti Batti”, which did not fare well at the box office. Kangana, who’s known for her style sense, says she takes opinions of a bona fide critic seriously. “There are bona fide critics, who would give a critic and that would be actually valuable to a lot of people... so I respect it.” What doesn’t impact her are opinions on social media. “Social media is very different. That’s about a lot of personal space, where everyone has a personal opinion on everything. It is not something that is going to make a direct impact on anything.”

www.desitalk.com – that’s all you need to know

Kangana says she is not on social media platforms, but when she stumbles across a joke -- even if it’s about her -- she enjoys it. “But do I want to take this seriously, and consider it? When a person is criticizing a set of ideas, there is another dimension that your brain opens up to. Do I want to see it like that? No, may be not... Because they are not bona fide critics, they are just people like you and I,” she added. Does she ever plan to join social media? “I am really not a person who likes, what you call, say, junk communication! There are no valuable ideas being exchanged out there. That’s out of my very little understanding of social media,” said the actress, whose next film is Vishal Bhardwaj’s upcoming directorial “Rangoon”. Just last week, Kangana was here to launch her fashion line Venice Cruise for European-high street fashion brand Vero Moda. Asked if she ever plans to launch her own label, Kangana said: “That’s actually a huge responsibility. Having your own label actually is like setting up an industry of your own. It’s not easy to produce garments and it’s not easy to set up a team of people.” Kangana also understands that “making garments is not just about designing”. Having said that, at some point, she would love to launch her own label. “But right now I really don’t have the time and experience to set up my own brand.” – IANS

–MUMBAI ctress Aditi Bhatia, who is currently playing the role of a boy in popular TV show “Ye Hai Mohabbatein”, says she is “enjoying” essaying the character despite being a girl and feels it is “fun”. “Playing a boy is actually fun. Girls tend to get conscious but boys are carefree. I’m enjoying the latter bit for sure. The biggest challenge is to behave like a boy which I faced initially but now I am used to it,”

A

Aditi said in a statement. Though she added that playing a boy’s role is not at all easy. “I have extremely long hair that fall till below my waist. So tying them up into a wig for the boy look takes time. There are boys on set who often help me with the mannerisms which is a lot of fun. I’m all used to it by now,” Aditi said. The Star Plus show features Divyanka Tripathi and Karan Patel in the lead. – IANS

Nakuul Mehta’s Unique Style To Beat Heat –MUMBAI opular TV actor Nakuul Mehta, who will be seen sporting a businessman look in his next TV show “Ishqbaaaz”, couldn’t stand the heat on the set and jumped into the pool with his blazer on. Nakuul, who is making a comeback on TV post “Pyaar Ka Dard Hai” which ended almost two years ago, was shooting at the pool side for a sequence of the show. “We were shooting this sequence bang in the middle of May. It was difficult, but the minute it was done, before the director could even call ‘pack up’, having had enough, I jumped into

P

the pool with my blazer on,” Nakuul said in a statement. “Only later did I realise that I had the entire costume department and crew staring at me for what I did. Although, at that moment, all I did was smile sheepishly and then went on to enjoy some respite from the heat,” he added. “Ishqbaaz”, which will be aired on Star Plus, will tell the story of three brothers, Omkar, Rudra and Shivaay. While Nakuul will be seen as Shivaay, the roles of Omkar and Rudra will be played by Kunal Jaisingh and Leenesh Mattoo. – IANS
