fantastic industry again. A big thanks to all the fellow exhibitors, friends and contacts that helped out during the week and hello to all the park operators we met. A special big hello and thanks to Celtic Parks, It was a pleasure to speak to you. In fact exhibitions feature quite highly in this issue as we have reviewed the amusement show, EAG Int’l and VAE Expo which took place in January. Exhibitions are always a fantastic way to find out what is new and exciting and EAG and VAE delivered in spades. We also announce the launch of THE GLAMPING SHOW, which is set to take place at Stoneleigh Park in Sept. Dedicated to all those who run Glamping sites or are thinking of adding the offer to an existing park or site, this dedicated event will show all that is best in this booming sector. As minds turn to the new season we also have our usual round up of new products and companies that can add value to your park and on a more serious note, an in depth feature covering the implications of the new legislation covering Food Allergy and Intolerance that came into force in Dec 2014. As usual this legislation seems to have has slipped into place and many operators may not be fully aware of quite what it means or what they have to about it. The article explains how it works, what is expected of all businesses providing unpackaged foods and where you can go to find help. I’m really looking forward to the new season and hope to see more of you out and abut at shows and meetings. EAG Chairman Martin Burlin was positive about the shows’ performance, saying “The 2015 show has been something of a milestone in the amusement and leisure industry calendar, with EAG and VAE showcasing a dazzling range of products from both new and established manufacturers. There was a palpable sense of enthusiasm in the air; something that our industry has been lacking in recent years. In comparison with last year, the overall number of visitors dropped slightly by 180 over the three days but there has been nothing but praise for the calibre of visitor. Overseas visitors remained constant at around 25% but there is evidence that these are travelling from further afield, with Africa, Russia and North America featuring well. “There is no doubt in my mind that where exhibitors have the right products, these

shows will deliver,” confirmed Martin. Speaking about the very first Visitor Attraction Expo, BALPPA Chief Executive Paul Kelly revealed, “BALPPA are already focusing on next year’s VAE, with a number of exhibitors keen to build on this year’s success. More seminars covering more industry topics are planned and a greater variety of exhibitors as VAE becomes the key national exhibition in the attractions calendar going forward.” New for 2015, the ‘Veterans Lunch’ organised by Coin-Op Community’s Steph Norbury was a resounding success. The lunch, held in memory of Eddie Moss, lent a real sense of occasion, and plans are afoot to make it an annual event. A well-attended seminar programme and numerous gatherings and networking events led many to comment that they felt that EAG International had ‘come of age.’ Continued

Many exhibitors commented on the advantage of having the two shows co-located. UDC’s Michael Green commented, “EAG has really benefitted from the addition of the Visitor Attraction Expo. Team Play’s Fish Bowl Frenzy redemption game has been a star piece for us, following on from great sales at IAAPA . We’ve also had a fantastic response to the Sweet Amanda’s candy vendor which has exceeded all expectations,” explained Michael. Over at the VAE, Innovative Leisure’s Phil Pickersgill was also happy with the inaugural show; “We were pleased with the number of visitors who came to examine our climbing walls in detail, including traditional BALPPA members, operators from the indoor play sector and in particular, visitors from the EAG show floor.

Leisure’s CChris hris B lack Sound Leisure’s Sound Black As with previous years, Bandai Namco Amusements Europe had a huge presence at EAG: “Star Wars Battle Pod made its European debut and exceeded all expectations. We have containers ‘on the water’ and will be installing in February. Time Crisis 5 absolutely swept the board and our new partners Adrenaline Amusements had an excellent show with Flying Tickets and Candy Crush Saga redemption games. There was huge interest in the eagerly-awaited Jurassic Park Arcade and Jennison Entertainment Technologies’ Ocean Pearl enjoyed an excellent reception,” reported Commercial Director John Brennan.

ustin B urke SSEGA’s EGA’s JJustin Burke “The level of enquiries was significantly above those received when we exhibited at EAG prior to its partnership with the Visitor Attraction Expo,” confirmed Phil. New products from both established and new exhibitors were very much in evidence. Sega Amusements Europe reported a strong show, with the company’s Justin Burke saying, “ICE’s Skill Wall proved to be a destination in itself and Showdown totally wowed our visitors. In all, a very successful show.” Sound Leisure’s Chris Black was also pleased with the response to new products: “Our newly-released HD video jukebox was extremely well received, as was the soundjack phone app. The new novelty vending machine, Little Ted, is off to a good start with confirmation of a roll-out from a major retailer,” revealed Chris.

Also with a strong presence was Whitehouse Leisure, occupying no less than three separate stands. Business Development Executive Ian Whittingham was very happy with the company’s performance at EAG: “A great deal of hard work is paying off with good business being written at the show. The response to our new Frozen and Minions ranges has been fantastic and we’re really excited about our new ranges hitting the market,” informed Ian. First time exhibitors also reported a buoyant show. Brothers Robert and Steven Bruck made the journey from New York to showcase their spectacular candy vending concept: “As a first-time exhibitor we were overwhelmed by the quality of attendees and the level of excitement in the air. EAG international has been the perfect place to introduce Sweet Amanda’s to the European market place,” confirmed Robert.

Russia and Africa. Play Bus has really opened their eyes to the possibilities for indoor play.” At interactive technology-based attractions developer Veqtor UK , Jonathan Plache was delighted with the show, saying, “A great show and a worthwhile investment!” Reflecting on the company’s appearance at VAE, Regency Purchasing’s Ben Hoskins confirmed, “It’s been good to meet up with many of our existing customers and we’ve also experienced a lot of interest from start-up businesses within the leisure sector.”

nd ffriends riends Astra's Alan Rogers and A stra's A lan R ogers a Astra Games’ Alan Rogers also noticed the positive atmosphere at this year’s show, though was less convinced about the earlier dates: “We would like to congratulate the organisers of EAG International Expo on yet another brilliantly presented show at ExCel. In general, we experienced a highly positive response to our full product range and engaged in some interesting conversations with key industry personnel over three days of trading. “The ambience of EAG has clearly improved and the Astra team came away from the show with a feel-good factor that has not been so prevalent in recent years due to the challenging nature of the business. “It’s important, however, to balance out those positives with one minor criticism regarding the timing of the show. I think we’re not alone in expressing the opinion that it came just a touch too close to the Christmas break .”

feedback on the new licensed Aliens pinball,” revealed Andrew. Formula K also had a productive show with Graham Liddle saying, “We had a great response to our new mini compact cars. Needing only four metres of track width, they’re perfect for indoor play centres.” VAE’s exhibitors showcased a wide range of products and services appealing to every facet of the leisure sector. For many, a true evaluation of the new show will only be made in the coming months. Some exhibitors, however, were already happy with the new event. Play Bus’s Design and Development Director Steve Plimmer commented, “We’ve had serious enquiries from a wide variety of locations, including

Leading simulation attractions developer Simworks were also happy with the show, with Sales and Marketing Manager Matt Clarkson revealing, “It’s been a good show with a lot of interest in our immersive attractions.” And what of the prospects for co-joined shows for 2016? Organiser Karen Cooke has confirmed that this will absolutely be the case: “We now have much work to do, listening to industry groups, exhibitors, and visitors to gather feedback about the format and organisation of both shows. “EAG International and VAE are put on by their respective industry sectors for the benefit of those within the sectors and that’s why these views are so important,” assured Karen. EAG International 2016 and the Visitor Attraction Expo2016 will take place at ExCel London on 12th-14th January 2016.

The quality of response to new products was a recurring theme when speaking to exhibitors. Electrocoin’s Kevin Weir commented, “We were very busy with new and existing customers. It was heart-warming to feel the customer response to Bar X in its many new formats.” In the words of Syndicate UK’s Jim Dunne, “We operate in a niche market but we’ve seen the right people-they’re serious and they make decisions,” informed Jim. Over at Heighway Pinball, Andrew Heighway was also pleased: “We’ve taken orders for our first game, Full Throttle and received amazing

TThe he Entertainer Entertainer ffrom rom Mediatheme: Mediatheme: IItt ppays ays ffor or iitself! tself! Steve Dixon is the owner of Ord Country Park in Berwick , an award-winning holiday centre with over 400 caravans on site. He provides entertainment for the many thousands of tourists he accommodates each year, as well as managing a steady calendar of events for local customers. Steve uses his Entertainer, to provide most of the entertainment in his venue. “Our venue is split into three separate rooms, each containing a feed from the Entertainer Pro and high tech audio visual equipment – and each able to create a distinctive atmosphere. It’s ideal because I am able to give my customers what they need, I can set the Entertainer to play 50s music for a party of pensioners in one room, while a group of lads is watching sport in another. We have held some excellent charity race nights, games nights and children’s minidiscos over the last year, and we stage a popular karaoke disco every Saturday night, but I also use the Entertainer’s comprehensive music programs and advertising suite every single day. It’s a great piece of kit, and so handy, we’ve purpose-built a DJ booth for the Entertainer, with disco lights and all the gear, but you can just set it up for the night and let it run itself. We make the most of the Advert Manager and the new backgrounds we receive on the update discs each month. As well as promoting our own forthcoming events, menus and specials, we are also set to start charging local business for displaying their advertisements, after running free trials. This has also proved a financially sound decision for us as the system now more than pays for itself. I used to spend around £200 a week on DJs, and £350 just for New Year’s Eve. We had a superb New Year with the Entertainer last year though, with a full night of games and then a disco – it was a cracking party!”

or all those holiday park operators who include coin-op amusements and a ticket prize retail offering, you will be well aware of the importance of top performing machines in a wellrun area, adding to the visitor holiday experience as well as profit return.

RLMS Sales, a name that has become synonymous with the supply of gaming machines, is stepping out with a new venture for 2015 with the launch of the F5 Vortex, a brand new, coin-op ticket redemption booth that it has been working on throughout 2014, in conjunction with the product’s designer, Marcus Sheehan. Phil Boulton, MD RLMS Sales, took time out to explain why he is clearly excited about this year's launch. So, tell us a little about the F5 Vortex? We've worked with Marcus and Birthday Blaster for the past couple of years. We salivated at the prospect of a coinoperated Vortex and to be fair to Marcus and his team, they have come up with a fantastic product with a unique way of handling the prize tickets. 2014 had been the development year for it and we have been trialling it since April 14 on high profile sites and it really has proven to be hit with both the paying public and site operators. It's ticket redemption with a difference, falling into the 'experience' category, allowing a £2 price of play in many venues, with customers leaving the booth feeling exhilarated and with handfuls of redemption tickets as their prize. With its official launch at EAG 15, first build units will be available for siting ready for the Feb half-term. It was one of the non-gaming stars of the show. Who’s your target market for F5? The F5 Vortex is a perfect fit for any venue which has a ticket redemption offering as part of its portfolio of amusement machines. Our target markets are holiday

parks, FECs and bowling alley operators; all locations where visitors and players almost expect an array of redemption equipment. F5 Vortex will add to their existing offering yet with the confidence that there is nothing quite like this! Is it fully tested? There were initially four machines built which had been tested with high profile national operators in a variety of venues including bowling alleys and holiday parks throughout last summer and an FEC on the South coast. We were delighted with the response from players which fed through to really strong cashboxes offering a fantastic ROI, for a product which we’re going to market at £6,995. There is nothing else like this on the market.

on the Holiday Park Management Website with links to RLMS Sales and product specific details, including, in some cases, video links. Boulton concluded: “Whilst sales continues to be our core commercial model as most operators prefer to own the equipment and retain the whole cashbox (less duties), we are also open to discussing Revenue share options on some products and indeed can also offer an installation and service package from our sister company, Gamestec, the UK’s largest service network of pay-to-play leisure machines.” All enquiries should be made direct to RLMS Sales on 0845 603 6666.

Who’s building the F5? As with all products, there’s a material supply chain. So Marcus and Birthday Blaster are behind the concept and product design and, given the fact that we are part of the Bell-Fruit Group, it made absolute sense that Bell-Fruit got involved. They will add incredible value on the engineering and assembly fronts. This will result in a quality assured product, as is the case with all products that leave their Nottingham factory, whether they are their own or for third party manufacturing. PRESS RELEASE For immediate release: Monday 2 February 2015 The Glamping Show, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, CV8 2LG Tel: 01582 767254 Email: dan.w@theglampingsshow.com

Swan Events Launches New Exhibition ʹ The Glamping Show Swan Events, in association with Holiday Parks Management, is pleased to announce the launch of a new exhibition; The Glamping Show. The Show is a dedicated event that will bring together manufacturers and suppliers of every type of structure, product and service that the Glamping industry has to offer. The Show will take place at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire from Thursday 24th to Saturday 26th September 2015. Glamping has become increasingly popular during the last few years and as a consequence has become a prominent part of the leisure business. Where it was once a niche or novel concept it is now a recognised and well respected part of the outdoor lifestyle industry and the organisers felt that an event dedicated to this growing sector was long overdue. The Show will welcome exhibitors from right across the sector including bell tents, wigwams and gypsy caravans through eco toilets and portable washrooms to storage containers and lighting. Visitors will also have the opportunity to attend a range of seminars and workshops, which will be hosted by leading industry figures throughout the three days of the Show w. Given the outdoor nature of the sector the organisers were keen to secure a venue that would allow its exhibitors to showcase their products as they would be used in a real life situation. Stoneleigh Park fits the bill perfectly with plenty of outdoor exhibiting space and huge exhibitor halls that lend themselves to this type of exhibition. Centrally located in Warwickshire, the showground provides easy transport links for visitors travelling from all areas of the UK. The ŝŶĚƵƐƚƌLJ͛Ɛ customer demographic is extremely diverse and continues to be so as the sector grows as a variety of individuals and organisations identify the merits of offering a Glamping service to their customers. The organisers expect to see visitors from festival organisers and caravan/camping site managers to national parks, farmers and woodland managers as well as smaller individual operators. Swan Events has over 25 years experience organising exhibitions and corporate events. To ensure they deliver exactly the right ethos and audience for this new Show they have teamed up with specialist publishers, Holiday Parks Management, an organisation that is passionate about Glamping and all the sector has to offer. Ardler Community Complex and around 500 spectators and was considered a resounding success. A small fly in the ointment, however, was the rather embarrassing state of the showers and changing areas at the Ardler Complex. With aspirations to establish the Ardler Open Championship as an annual event in the body-building calendar, it was strongly felt that a major refurbishment of the shower and changing areas was a necessity.

I

n April 2013, Ardler Community Complex, a council-run facility in the northern suburbs of Dundee, hosted a National Body Building Competition. Specifically, it was an Open event for competitors from all over the UK – free from the silly rules and regulations normally associated with Federation-run bodybuilding events. Their event attracted approximately 60 male and female competitors

The complex, which features two squash courts, a games hall with spectator gallery, dance studio, cardiovascular fitness room and a weights room, had periodically been upgraded over its operational lifespan, yet the shower and changing areas were original from when the Ardler Centre first opened, 38 years earlier in 1975. The grouped shower installation comprised exposed pipework runs, mechanical timed flow controls and fixed shower heads. Linkin Teatime Talks Written by Adam Beckett Haven trial solar power on their caravans

H

aven are trialling Solar Power on their caravans. They are joining forces with Willerby homes to come up with solar powered homes. They are looking to reduce their spend by £200-£300 worth of electricity per annum

Ian Elliot- Managing Director at Horizon Leisure Homes Ltd Hi Adam, we looked at this last year and was going to offer it as an option on some of our ranges. Regards Ian Andrew Muir - Hi, We have one with 1.5kw and one with 4kw Just organising getting another 4kw system. We run hot tubs and our units are twins, current electric £700-£1000p.a Adam Beckett Energy Management / Energy Marketing worth having then Andrew - are the panels fitted onto static caravans or lodges ? Ian, are you going to push this forwards then ? How do the numbers add up for you / the park owner? surely there's a marketing advantage here if the demand is there .. Andrew Muir Director

Ours are lodges, £150-170k they are on a chassis the same as a caravan, have a tow ball and are held up with axle stands, I nearly got lynched when I once referred to them as caravans. Soooo funny.

Adam Beckett - Excellent contributions, thank you all. Yes the key to open this opportunity up is affordability - and there must be a way to make it work to the greatest extent possible, we just have to think our way around it. I'll refer to the statics / lodges as 'accommodation' to keep things simple and not get too mixed up with owner demographics ( I do agree this has an impact but I want to stay focused on subject ) 1. where occupants pay for their own energy / purchase or own their own accommodation there is an obvious case for having solar installed - so with owner occupied residential parks the case is clear cut IMO.

Adam, ey are on lodges. What's the difference between a lodge & a caravan ?

2. where occupants pay a charge to cover the cost of energy to the site owner, it gets complicated. park owners do have a headache when it comes to certain occupants using far too much energy, so much so that I have seen cases where site owners are starting to fit meters to each unit.

Andrew Chance - Business Development / Air conditioning Engineer at OIP Leisure Certainly an emerging market, as Ian Elliott knows our company has been involved with solar panels, and Air conditioning.

perhaps it may make sense for the site owners to reward anyone that fits solar panels by footing / sharing the upfront cost of fitting a sub meter to those that fit solar to their accommodation?

Our latest project is to use Solar power, to power the Air Con units, instead of the warm air being discharged to the atmosphere, it is dissipated in the water tank to provide hot water. A further benefit is any excess energy can be stored in a battery bank, and used for lighting using 12 v led types.

So, occupants use less energy, good news for everyone ( the park owner uses software to monitor the usage of accommodation units where solar panels are fitted and bills them; software solutions exist to automatically print off an invoice )

e project is still far om accomplished, but will happen.

[ Feed in tariff would be due to whoever paid the cost of fitting solar - this is another aspect that would however require a software billing solution ]

On which note any sites interested in working with us feel ee to get in touch. Andrew I would suggest perhaps that lodges are more expensive than statics therefore the investment required as a percentage of capital cost is greater on statics. Do end users have that disposable income and in a lot of instances have limited interest in alternative power sources. Simon Tuffrey Brought this idea 2 years ago Andrew Muir Has anyone ever altered a hot tub so as to have a hot water tank with an immersion run om the PV Also currently we purchase our LED GU10's at £2.50 each with 2 year warranty (32 per unit) so not cheap does anyone know of a better deal. We are currently organising a 4KW pv system prefer sunpower panels if anyone knows anyone who'd like the work (quoted £5200 we supply scaffold) Andrew Chance you are spot on, down to earth people buy caravans, other people buy over priced caravans and call them lodges.

To reiterate, benefits are that an owner of accommodation fitted with solar panels gets the benefit of lower energy bills and feed in tariff payment where this may have not been an option before. Park owners benefit from less energy usage as a by product of using sub metering and energy monitoring since occupants would also be more energy usage conscious as well as drawing less energy from main supply. Now this is just my initial stream of thought - something tells me that there is a way to make it work and that there is a substantial opportunity involved for all who want to take it in some shape or form. This is turning into a great discussion - so long as we keep focused on the end goal I believe we can find a real solution as opposed to the conversation thread just petering out.

We are in the business of providing people with happy memories of their holidays to take away with them. All holiday park operators want to avoid accidents or illnesses, particularly avoidable ones that could spoil a family’s stay or worse. We have all read shocking stories of people killed by food allergies – particularly nut allergies and now legislation has come in designed to protect those with allergies, so that they can enjoy food while they are out and about, safe in the knowledge that it is safe for them to eat. Since 13 December 2014, all food businesses must provide allergy information on food sold unpackaged, in for example catering outlets, deli counters, bakeries and sandwich bars. There will also be changes to existing legislation on labelling allergenic ingredients in pre-packed foods. No doubt your holiday park is already working hard to implement the new law but – particularly for small operators – the job can be an onerous one. Tracking and tracing every ingredient to ensure compliance is time-consuming and this adds costs. Thankfully there are a number of suppliers to the catering industry who are offering help and support to small and larger businesses in the form of ingredient and allergen tracking, training for staff and even the creation of menus specially for those with food allergies. For many of us, lucky enough not to be affected by food allergies, it may seem strange that it has become such a big issue. In fact, Allergy UK , the leading national charity dedicated to supporting the estimated 21 million allergy sufferers in the UK – rates of allergy are increasing throughout the world, affecting up to 30 -35% of people at some stage in their lives. This increase was initially seen in countries such as the UK , Europe and USA , but can now be found in all countries undergoing industrial development. The pattern of allergy is also

22

changing – initially, the increase was in asthma and allergic rhinitis (hay fever). However, recent studies have confirmed a significant increase in the incidence of food allergies, in particular amongst children. In the UK , it is estimated that up to 50% of children are diagnosed with an allergic condition. Read on to find out ways in which your business might be better prepared.

PPelican elican Procurement Procurement SServices ervices To help organisations comply with the new Allergen Labelling Legislation, Pelican has developed a revolutionary new system called Piranha. Piranha, is a cloud-based system which enables you to monitor and track allergen, nutritional and reference intake (previously known as Guideline Daily Amount) data for every ingredient that is used in your menus. This information is taken directly from suppliers and is updated automatically.

items to improve margins and achieve your desired GP. Standardise dishes across the whole organisation. You can build your menu items, add details of how each is made and even include a photo of the finished dish. Piranha is available at no additional cost to Pelican customers. For a free demonstration contact Pelican on 01252 70522 or piranha@pelicanprocurement.co.uk Customer quote: “Piranha is far and away the most useful technological development I have witnessed in recent years! I’m new to the system but so far I’m really impressed with the recipe spec sheets and the event management tool which costs out individual events from the food and the staffing to the laundry and linen. ‘Aside from allowing the team to determine ingredient types, amounts, costs and profit per serving, Piranha saves that most valuable of resources in my business: time.” Andrew Scott, Managing Director, Scott Hospitality Services

The system will also enable you to: Share allergen information easily. You can export your allergen information to a user-friendly PDF we call the Menu Item Allergen Matrix, this can then be printed for your staff and customers. Quickly cost and monitor menu items in real-time. The system uses your live purchasing invoice data so an accurate cost can be calculated for every portion you make. Engineer your menu

CHILD’S PLAY AN ELECTION ISSUE, SAY UK PLAY INDUSTRIES

T

he lead trade body for the UK play sector is urging political parties campaigning for this year’s General Election to make play a policy priority.

Provision of high-quality play facilities in local communities not only has a vital role to play in tackling the nation’s catastrophic physical inactivity epidemic, but also addresses wider social problems like social exclusion, anti-social behaviour and community cohesion, says the Association of Play Industries (API). API Chair Michael Hoenigmann says: “Every child has a fundamental right to play but there are many local communities that have nowhere safe for their children to play. At the same time that childhood obesity and physical inactivity are rising and young people’s relationship with the outdoor world is dwindling, austerity measures are putting children’s right to play and their health and well-being at risk.” The Association calls on politicians for investment in highquality public play facilities and parks, particularly in deprived communities, for children’s needs to come first when planning new play facilities, for long-term funding for all schools to provide more and better opportunities for active outdoor learning and play and to improve provision of PE and sport, and for measurement of children’s physical literacy within the Ofsted inspection regime.

throughout the school day. The Sport England Primary Spaces programme should be extended to every school, with broader scope to incorporate a wide variety of physical literacy activities, not just ball games. 4 Active outdoor learning and play at school are as important as PE and sport in encouraging children of all capabilities to be more physically active, as well as improving concentration, classroom behaviour and academic performance. A measurable outcome for physical literacy in schools with agreed minimum levels of physical activity, outdoor learning and play should be mandated in all schools as part of the National Curriculum with outcomes assessed within the Ofsted framework. Evidence of the benefits of high-quality play provision can be found in Tim Gill’s report, The Play Return: a review of the wider benefits of play initiatives[1] and the Association of Play Industries’ policy document: Community benefits of children’s play areas[2]. The API is the lead trade body within the UK play sector and campaigns at the highest levels for policy recognition of the value of play. The association represents approximately 85 per cent of UK play industry companies including manufacturers, installers, designers and distributors of outdoor and indoor play equipment and safety surfacing.

In full, the API makes four key asks: 1 Children are more physically active if they have access to well-designed, high-quality outdoor play facilities. Welldesigned play spaces act as a ‘signpost’ for children to access the outdoor world. Public parks should be hubs for physical activity for people of all ages, including young children, teenagers and seniors. Investment in, and subsequent maintenance of, public play facilities should be a government priority, particularly in deprived communities. 2 Local authority procurement practices are protracted, consume time and money, stifle the development of highquality play facilities and fail children. Play is a child development issue. Decisions about local play provision should be made by specialists within local authorities who understand the benefits of play and the needs of local communities, not by procurement departments. 3 Increased physical activity levels are directly linked to greater concentration and academic attainment. Schools play a key role in encouraging children to be more active

Play Case Studies

J

upiter Play Case Study For Abbey Park Evesham

This client requested to have an embankment slide on an existing south facing slope. Due to its southern prospect this could be dangerous. The heat of the sun would force it to become unusable in summer months so we built a tube slide underground; utilising the natural form of the slope. The area that we designed was a small part of a much larger scheme designed by the local authority although it sits adjacent to the larger site is has individual character and is a completely bespoke solution. The site is located on the boundary of a Scheduled Ancient Monument. When designing the site we have considered how children would use the space and their movement patterns. We created a route around the area through the use of stepping posts and a bespoke climbing net unit to span over the slide’s route underground. The underground slide is not only a functional solution but it has become part of an exciting space. The elements of play and the consideration of the surrounding protected landscape has created an area with its own individual character, qualities and play experience. Don’t slip up, use DeckWright Anti-Slip!

T

he popularity of timber decking as an outdoor surface is growing and yet here in the UK, we are experiencing an increasing amount of wet weather. DeckWright AntiSlip is a professionally developed and tested product that is suitable for commercial, heavy traffic areas where there is a high risk of slipping.

Timber decking can become lethal when wet and businesses such as holiday parks and camps are all too aware of this risk to their business. Whether there is a need for brand new decking or a requirement to anti-slip already laid decking, DeckWright can be the solution. DeckWright Anti-Slip Inserts Already got the problem of slippery decking? DeckWright Inserts can robustly fix to the majority of grooved decking that has already been laid and create a reassuringly safe surface for many years to come. Supplied in flexible lengths, DeckWright Inserts are a resin and aggregate creation that can be cut to size and 32

adhered to a groove with a specially formulated adhesive. They look great and significantly reduce the risk of injury on wet decking. Such is their flexibility, DeckWright Inserts can be fitted to the entire decking area or simply key walkways and steps. Made by Hull based WJ Group, a choice of coloured DeckWright Inserts is also available and a short video explains just how easy they are to fit. DeckWright Anti-Slip Service WJ Group also offers an anti-slipping service for timber decking in its Hull and Rochester sites. Almost any grooved board can be transformed into a safe, anti-slip decking product and this service is ideal for businesses looking to undertake a brand new decking project. With no minimum order, the price is simply per linear metre and swift lead times are available. and is compliant with ISO 9001: 2008. Mark Eggleston, WJ Group MD comments: “DeckWright Anti-Slip has received much attention for both commercial and domestic use. Businesses such as holiday parks have expressed interest as timber decking is commonly installed in such locations and used heavily by the public. Recent summers have of course demonstrated the impact of unpredictable weather!

DeckWright is a professional, cost effective and long-lasting solution to a known problem. Once installed, there is no need to re-apply or re-install; it will work with the timber for the life of the decking. We welcome all enquiries about DeckWright Anti-Slip, whether large or small. A Swimming pool is an expensive but valuable assets, it makes sense to enable them to be used earlier and later in the season or throughout the year. The fact that the “Great British Summer” has failed to make an appearance for the last few years makes putting them under cover them even more important. A pool is undoubtedly the campsites major attraction and is even more so if the pool is enclosed. When it comes to booking one of the questions most often asked of campsites is whether or not they have a covered pool.
