I have never lost the feeling that Autumn is the start of something; like going back to school with shiny new shoes and sharpened pencils. September – far more than New Year – heralds a time when after the long days of summer, I start to plan for the future and polish off my good intentions. That is why I am so excited about this year’s Glamping Show in a couple of weeks, which will bring together so many new products, new ideas and old friends to Stoneleigh. Visitors to the show will be able to find us in our own room in the entrance hall. There, you will be able to pick up magazines and stop for a chat to tell us about your projects and business ideas and give us some feedback on the subjects you would like us to cover.

BOND celebrates 30 years of British Design & Manufacture! Campfires, their clients location in Wales as 2nd prize, and a wonderful Hamper filled with lots of Gloucestershire goodies.

Bond is very proud to be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The company was founded back in 1988 just a few miles from where the factory now stands in Stroud, Gloucestershire. With many of the team having worked at Bond for up to 20 years they have a vast amount of experience in the design and manufacture of temporary structures, marquees and glamping tents. At The Glamping Show this year BOND will be exhibiting a fully furnished Classic Safari Tent (5m x 9.5m), and to celebrate their milestone will be running a free prize draw offering a 10% discount on any Bond Safari Tent as 1st prize, a Family Glamping Holiday at Canvas &

a tranquil corner of West Wales close to the coast. Ellie and Dan, along with their young family uprooted from city-life to pursue the dream of living and working in the Welsh countryside offering a luxury camping experience. In 2017 they chose BOND (5m x 9.5m).

Mike Halliwell, Owner of BOND says ‘The whole Bond team are proud to be celebrating our 30th anniversary. We represent true British Manufacturing holding local values at our core, maintaining the traditions of skilled workmanship and developing lasting relationships with our clients.’

Ellie recently spoke of their experience, 'Mike and Michelle at Bond have been amazing to work with. From the initial no obligation advice, their patience through the planning and design phase, the bespoke adjustments to our tents, sharing of social media posts and the overall general support. The tents have been fab and have withstood the worst that the Welsh weather can throw at them! We wouldn't hesitate to recommended Bond and the team.’

The Safari Tents are all tested by structural engineers, have full reports for windloading and meet British and European standards. Working closely with their clients BOND offers high performance structures and a personal supportive service from planning all the way to installation and beyond.

Smart Finance With SME funding It can often be hard for both start-up and established businesses in the UK to find funding from traditional sources such as banks. Factor in the quirkiness of the glamping sector, and you may find it even more difficult to secure the loans required to get your venture off the ground. The most frustrating aspect of applying for funding can be the lack of personal contact - filling in forms online just doesn’t allow you any flexibility to explain your business plan. Setting up or expanding a business is a stressful time and the right funding can make or break your venture – so having an expert in your corner could be the answer to your prayers.

Outdoor Cooking Kit Business Looking for a new owner One small lifestyle business is looking for new owner. Glamping Show favourite and contributor to this magazine - Trish Maccurrach - is selling her Kotlich Cooking business, which would be ideal as an addon or after-sales opportunity for an existing glamping business or supplier. Current owner Trish says, “I have too many grandchildren and I am getting slow and dotty! I am looking for someone with plenty of energy, and a passion for food and outdoor adventures. (It would also be good if they were a dab hand at Joomla who knew a bit about SEO).” The business sells tripods, beautiful enamel kotlich (bogracs in Hungary), paella pans, grills and fire pits, plus some bright enamel jugs, bowls and water carriers etc. All the products are transferred from Hungary (no tariff, only VAT). “Have you thought of having a page on your web site for cooking and food? A real outdoor pioneer type wants to see what the cooking potential is at all the different sites. You can lose bookings by not being big on food and campfire cooking. You could lengthen your season by using my products for children’s cooking events, or hen party specials (I hear they can be rather rowdy) or even at a company bonding event,” adds Trish. Trish and her Kotlich have been dragged to many festivals to enjoy fabulous music and meet crazy chefs. Last year all the famous chefs at the Abergavenny food festival campfire used Trish’s products. This summer three of the largest Kotlich graced the Lawn Dining Experience at Port Eliot and they wrote “We are utterly in love with the Kotlich now. We used them to cook the fish stew each night, and on Sunday we stewed up a delightful local organic hogget pot which went down a treat”. “I am very sad to be selling my business and would be happy to talk to anyone who is interested about the inner workings. Do contact me for more details,” she adds. www.kotlichcooking.co.uk

CALLING ALL GLAMPING BUSINESSES A major survey is being carried out this year into the impact of the holiday-park sector on the economy of the UK. The research is being carried out by the Economic Impact Research Group (the BH&HPA, the Camping and Caravanning Club, the Caravan and Motorhome Club and the NCC). The term “holiday park” includes also caravan parks, camping sites – and glamping! This is a great opportunity for glamping businesses to help ascertain the value of this increasingly important part of the sector. And the EIRG has devised a special online questionnaire for small campsites to make life easy for you. The survey is open until 30 September and it is possible to enter data, save it, close it and open it again, so completing it need not be done in one sitting. The report will be published at the end of the year and available to all. Comparisons will be made between the countries and between larger regions, as well as a breakdown by accommodation type. The report will also act as a benchmark for future surveys so this is your chance to be involved form the beginning. The questionnaire can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/BJVNVT9

Glamping Association Launches LEGAL Guide In the wake of a publicised safety issue last year, The Glamping Association have been working hard to raise awareness of safety standards and legal requirements for glamping accommodation rental. One of their missions is to ensure glamping site operators are aware of the relevant laws and legislation so that glamping holidays for the public remain safe. The launch of The Glamping Association's Legislative Essentials for Glamping Accommodation Lodgings (LEGAL) Guide marks the first major step in protecting public safety in the glamping industry. The guide has been specifically designed to provide a quick overview of the laws affecting the letting of accommodation in England, giving new entrants to the market an introduction to essential legislation, and enabling existing operators to check they are up to standard and aware of legislation. The Glamping Association's LEGAL Guide is available through Amazon as a digital down load or hard copy. The Glamping Association was founded over a decade ago to monitor the industry size and gather statistics. Today the Glamping Association is the Not For Profit Organisation representing glamping sites across the UK. Joining the Association is currently free and comes with a host of benefits including (but not limited to) a web listing and an enquiries service. “We hope that this guide will prove insightful for glamping site operators both old and new,” says the Association’s Rob Farrow.

National Park To Capitalise On Glamping The Friends, with support from Scottish Enterprise, will host two Glamping Business Workshops on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th September 2018 in Balloch and Callander. The seminars will run from 10.00am through to 2.00pm. Led by renowned glamping expert Kate Morel, these workshops are for any individual or business considering setting up a small to medium glamping business. Kate is an industry specialist who is also an author, speaker and business advisor in the sector.

The prolonged spell of good summer weather has contributed to a bumper tourist season in and around the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park but it has highlighted a shortage of certain types of accommodation, including glamping facilities, which enable visitors to get close to nature and enjoy the National Park at its best.

James Fraser, Chairman of the Friends said: “These seminars are designed to provide very practical insights to the glamping industry and to help encourage the development of more glamping facilities in the National Park building on the runaway success of some recent local glamping business ventures that we plan to feature as case studies.”

To address this, the Friends of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, the independent conservation and heritage charity for the National Park, is launching an exciting new initiative as part of a wider ecotourism project to encourage new or existing businesses to invest in glamping facilities.

“This is one of the most exciting and fastest growing sectors of the tourist industry at the present time as visitors seek out more unique and rustic holiday experiences and, given the special scenic and natural heritage qualities of the National Park, there is great potential for new start up businesses or existing businesses to capitalise on this growth by developing much sought after glamping facilities.’’

Glamping is rapidly growing in popularity with more and more visitors wanting to get back to nature and enjoy authentic experiences staying in unusual or unique, but comfortable, accommodation in a safe environment.

A number of one-to-one surgeries are also available as part of the new glamping initiative. For further details of the seminars and surgeries and to book places email jared.bowers@lochlomondtrossachs.org or see www.lochlomondtrossachs.org.uk

Secrets of the Hidden Valley

“Being in the business for a decade is quite an achievement in itself, the site is more popular than ever and we’ve won an award for our sustainability, which we are incredibly proud of,” says Hidden Valley’s Mike Pointing. “We’ve earned a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for the second year running and have launched The Lake House, our new luxury year-round accommodation.”

Back in 2008, the glamping landscape looked radically different. “There were just a handful of sites across the UK, and sourcing materials wasn’t easy,” Pointing says. “Mongolian yurts were chosen for their authenticity but they were rare in the UK at that time — and so, of course, they had to be imported from Mongolia! Interest in the glamping model was growing at an astonishing rate and people were contacting us for help and advice, so a company was formed to sell the yurts and run courses for those looking to set up their own glamping business. You can now see our Mongolian yurts in sites from Land’s End to John o’ Groats.”

When Hidden Valley Yurts threw open its tent flaps in 2008, it was one of the very first glamping sites in the UK. With just two yurts in a small field, it offered a simple rural retreat for those looking to get back to nature but without the inconvenience of pitching and packing up a tent. There are now five opulent, modern yurts sleeping from 5 to 31, with the private lakeside holiday home completing the picture.

Nestled deep in the hills of South Wales in Llanishen, midway between Chepstow and Monmouth, Hidden Valley comprises a sprawling haven of 80 acres of woodland and meadow for visitors to find refuge. “It’s just what the doctor ordered to recharge, regenerate and recuperate,” says Pointing. “It can be a difficult place to leave and many of our guests from all over the country come back year after year.

Its name might convey modest self-concealment, but Hidden Valley Yurts in Monmouthshire has something to shout about — a 10th birthday. The site in the Wye Valley at Lower Glyn Farm has proved a magnet for holidaymakers in search of tranquillity as the glamping concept has taken hold, receiving a slew of awards in the process.

Glampingly Recognised in the Press Win A Glamping Village For Just A Tenner The 2018 Glamping Show has been chosen as the venue to launch a competition with a chance to win The Dome Garden - a top UK Glamping Village and B&B, just north of Bristol in the Forest of Dean with a cash alternative of £200,000 All for just £10 The Dome Garden consists of 11 glamping domes capable of accommodating up to 50-60 people. It comes with a small guest house, which includes owner’s accommodation, a residents’ bar, three letting bedrooms and a small restaurant. It’s all contained inside an acre and a half of beautiful landscaped gardens. The whole site cost £1,000,000 to set up and build and is now a wellestablished, profitable operation with a good income and an amazing owner’s lifestyle. It’s hugely popular with corporate clients and families alike, some of whom have been coming back every year for the past 7 years. It currently operates for around 7 months a year, from Easter to the end of the Autumn half term. Based around a 200-year-old forest lodge, right inside the 25,000 acres of ancient natural woodlands, that is the Royal Forest of Dean, the entire operation is being offered, lock, stock and freehold barrels, as the winning offering in a prize draw competition being run over the next 16- 20 months. Competitors will pay just £10 to enter a word play competition which, if answered correctly, will qualify them for entry into a prize draw at the end of the competition. Ideally the competition winner will take over ownership and control of the entire Dome Garden properties and operation in the run-up to the main 2020 holiday season. Although, if not enough tickets are sold, there is still a hefty prize of up to £150,000 to be bagged by the winner. “The competition itself is a real task!” says owner and founder Jonny Clothier. “It’s not allowed to be easy, so you have to exercise skill to get through it, but we think the end result is more than worth the effort; either the keys to an operation that cost a million pounds, a £200,000 alternative or a backup prize of up to £150,000, all for just a tenner. “This is a chance to live in a unique, extraordinary environment, running a business that is satisfying and demanding but only takes up just over half of the year. Unlike us, you don’t have to spend £1,000,000 for the chance of owning it – it’s just a tenner.” Visit the International Glamping Business website for full terms and conditions of the competition.

New website glampingly.co.uk has received glowing press coverage in the five months since its launch. Unveiled at the start of April 2018, Glampingly, created by the award-winning team behind Cool Camping, features over 800 different properties and focuses solely on luxury glamping accommodation. Already to date, glampingly.co.uk has featured in The Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian, The I, The Mirror, The Mail on Sunday, The Star, The Sun and The Observer, along with well-known magazines such as Stylist and Closer. “It’s been an excellent year for press coverage across the industry,” Glampingly and Cool Camping founder Jonathan Knight told International Glamping Business. “Good weather and a growth in ‘staycations’ has increased the interest of journalists and publishers, while the launch of our new website has helped shed light on a host of brand new glamping properties.” Big winners from the early press coverage have been the unique and more unusual glamping sites in the Glampingly collection. A floating cabin that sits on a lake in Pembrokeshire has been billed as one of the UK’s best glamping sites in multiple newspapers, while suspended, dome-shaped treehouses in Wales and a converted helicopter in Sussex have also featured heavily. “The national press has recognised that glampingly.co.uk is the perfect place to find new accommodation and bespoke glamping properties,” Marketing Manager James Warner Smith observed. “When journalists come to us, they’re looking for something new that their readership haven’t seen before, so it’s the more unusual accommodation that generally stands out. We’re more than happy to help contribute to them and offer our recommendations.” “When we launched Glampingly in April this year we made no bones about the fact that it was put together by the same team behind Cool Camping,” Warner Smith revealed to International Glamping Business. “We’ve managed to use our reputation for recommending the best camping and glamping sites over on coolcamping.com and build a new high-end accommodation focus for glampingly.co.uk.”

Brexit Mythbusters: 6 Ways Brexit Will NOT Affect British Travellers

By Dave Ashton, CEO of award-winning Loco2 – the train comparison and booking platform for UK and PanEuropean rail travel Since the UK voted to leave Europe more than two years ago,‘Brexit’ talk seems to be at the centre of everything. People are asking the same frenzied questions: What will happen? When will it happen? Will it even happen? Recently in the news there have been concerns about how Brexit might affect British travellers who have already planned their European holidays in 2019. People are worried. Some even speculate that planes may be blocked from flying across Europe because of logistical and administrative backlogs created by a new set of rules applying to travel in and out of Europe. Did you know that it’s much easier to travel around Europe by train? Most Britons who are travelling across the continent are likely book several trips via rail, thanks to fantastic international services which reach new destinations by high-speed rail. Below are six common fears about postBrexit European travel and reasons why these concerns are unjustified. To be clear, regardless of what happens with Brexit there is no reason to allow it to stop us from being progressive and/or planning future European travel; Brits and Europeans alike should feel confident that they can enjoy train travel anywhere in Europe...and travel in general. Here’s the truth about how little Brexit will affect travellers:

1) Trains will be stopped from traveling to Europe This won’t happen. Eurostar has 70 percent market share on the London to Paris and London to Brussels routes, and carries more than 10 million passengers annually. Eurostar has a monopoly on train travel to and from the UK/Europe and their cross-

border process is laid out clearly: all travellers must already pass through customs for both the UK and the EU before boarding a Eurostar train bound for the Channel Tunnel. That process won’t change in future. Resulting Brexit Impact: Nul

2) Britons will need visas to travel to Europe Britons don’t need a visa to visit Europe today and - barring a catastrophic security or military problem - won’t need one in the future either. In the two years since the Brexit vote no government of any European country has credibly suggested making it harder for Britons to travel there as a tourist. A new EU travel authorisation scheme, going live in 2020, will require visitors from outside the EU to register on a website and pay €7. Resulting Brexit Impact: You might have to pay €7.

3) Travel insurance costs will rise The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles UK citizens to free or reduced-cost treatment in EU countries. It doesn’t have the same benefits as travel insurance, but if you have one, many travel insurance policies will waive the excess payment on a claim. This agreement may need to be renegotiated, which could impact prices for individual travel insurance policies. But Brexit is unlikely to significantly impact the price of such policies, and few Britons buy them anyway. Resulting Brexit Impact: Nul

4) Mobile data costs will return Roaming charges for mobile calls or data access were abolished in the UK and the EU in May 2017, and mobile network providers have been quick to reassure UK customers that they have no intention to go back to the days of closed networks based on national borders. Mobile roaming charges for Britons in Europe are not coming back.

Resulting Brexit Impact: Nul

5) Holidays will be more expensive Before June, investment bank Goldman Sachs predicted that a vote to leave the EU could hit sterling by as much as 20 percent, with the pound dipping as low as $1.15 against the dollar and €1.05 against the euro. Though there was a sharp decline in the pound’s value vs the Euro two years ago, since then the pound has held its value and there’s no reason to believe this will change. Resulting Brexit Impact: TBC, but probably nothing significant.

6) It will be more difficult to travel in Europe This won’t happen. Customs and immigration checks are already required for Brits when arriving in Europe (and arriving into the UK from Europe), and the idea that European countries would single out Britons for tougher border treatment post-Brexit is far-fetched. We will simply continue to show our passports on arrival, as we do now. Resulting Brexit Impact: Nul

Summary Any fuss about Brexit leading to disrupted travel for Britons is just fearmongering designed to generate clicks. There is no point in guessing what might happen when everything is on hold - let’s just focus on the things that will remain the same (or pretty much the same) and be positive about our future holidays in 2019. Plus, it’s been reported that the UK could ‘prolong the transition period’ so we could be waiting a long time for there to be a final result. Until we’re told to do otherwise, let’s continue to cover our holidays with travel insurance, take our passports where we need them, enjoy free mobile data, and remember to book your train in advance to get the cheapest tickets.

Global Glamping Summit

The inaugural Global Glamping Summit in Denver earlier this year was a resounding success, proving beyond doubt, the appetite for glamping business in the US. This led to our decision to create a second US event in 2018.

This November, the California Summit offers indoor and outdoor space for an exhibition-led glamping industry event in the US and provides an incredible opportunity for manufacturers and distributors of equipment and accommodation to show their products to hungry US buyers!

We’re currently building our line-up of experienced glampsite owners, experts on policy and legislation and innovators in tourism and glamping for the California Summit. If you want a taster of what to expect see our Homepage for speaker highlights from the Denver Summit back in April.

The event will also provide a meeting place for suppliers, operators and industry evangelists to network, while the Summit program attracts visitors serious about investing in their businesses.

The Global Glamping Summit California Agenda will be split into two distinct channels:

“These are pioneering times for the glamping industry in the US. Those present at the Denver summit and now California will form part of the community who will be the infrastructure of a new industry – helping to determine how far and how fast it grows,” says Peter Rusbridge, Event Director.

Equip yourself with the tools to make those early, difficult decisions. How do I navigate the permissions process? What financial tools could be available to me? Universal Glamping

Takes on UN Project in Pakistan Universal Glamping, formerly known as the ‘The Log Pod’ has received a total rebranding and has also completed an incredible project, rolling out 50 pods over five locations in Pakistan.

The project was a joint venture with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and required Universal Glamping to supply flat-pack pods to some of the remotest areas of Pakistan on an ongoing basis. The flat-pack pods were fitted with insulation to combat the harsh weather that can often be encountered in some parts of the country. They also incorporated an off-grid power supply. The first 10 of the pods were placed at 11,500 feet in the stunning mountains and provide an ideal place for tourist to enjoy the wonderful scenery. “Our pods will form little micro economies which will help to sustain the local communities and help them to become self-reliant, bringing in a regular income.

The UNDP are hopeful that this will encourage internal and external tourism in some of the most remote parts of Pakistan,” says George Richardson of Universal Glamping. “The pods come as a bespoke structure for the areas on which they will be located. We are honoured to make a difference to these remote areas of Pakistan.” George and Bradley Richardson have taken over the day-to-day running of Universal Glamping, ushering in a new era and flare to the family business, which has been manufacturing pods for 12 years – from the very beginning of the industry. “We have created a new logo to show that we are market leaders, and a wellestablished manufacturer of pods and

other innovative structures,” adds Bradley. “We have many other exciting new projects in the pipeline.” Universal Glamping will be exhibiting their new revolutionary, innovative designs at The Glamping Show this September at NAEC Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire. On display will be a side-entry Pod, disabled-friendly Pod; also a brand new two-tier, canvas glamping structure called the ‘Loft’ that uses infra-red heating. These will offer a revenue stream for businesses throughout the year. The new product brochure and website will be available to view from this month. www.universalglamping.co.uk

Banjara Camp & Retreat - Sangla, Kinnaur District, Himachal Close to the Tibetan border, Banjara Camp & Retreat is located in the Sangla Valley in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, the Banjara Camp & Retreat sits at a height of 2,700 meters right on the banks of the Baspa river.

The Serai, Jaisalmer This site is located in Jaislamer, Rajasthan, dominated by the Jaisalmer Fort, also known as Sonar Qila (Golden Fort). Unlike other forts in India, the Jaisalmer Fort is a living fort, meaning that you’ll find shops and homes where families have lived for generations. The camp is run by Sujan and is comprised of 21 tents. Fourteen luxury tents are set within an area of over one thousand square feet, each pitched on a base of local Jaisalmer stone. These luxury tents have an outdoor veranda, a covered living room and a large bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. There are six luxury tented suites on offer with their own private plunge pools which can be heated on request. The royal tented suite is set in a private area with its own spa, a heated pool, and separate tents to dine and relax in. As if this wasn’t enough, the royal tented suite also comes with its own personal butler to ensure guests have everything they need.

Glamping is growing in India and it provides an extra layer of adventure for those exploring this fascinating country. A number of sites have opened up offering retreats, wildlife, spas – and of course incredible sightseeing – while offering luxury worthy of a Maharaja.

Bordered by apple orchards, the campsite features a number of Swiss cottage tents, two river facing huts, hammocks and a bonfire. Right next to the campsite is the retreat itself, a rustic two-storied stone and wood house with comfortably furnished rooms available. A well-equipped kitchen serves multi-cuisine meals throughout the day. The site is open from mid-March to October, despite temperatures dropping during the night to around 2-3 degrees during March, April and October.

Sher Bagh, Ranthambore Sher Bagh is located on the border of the Ranthambore National Park in the Sawai Mahopur district of south-eastern Rajasthan. The Rantambore National Park is one of the largest national parks in Northern India, spread over an area of 392 square kilometres. The park is most notably famous for its tigers, and is counted as one of the best places in the country to see them. Ranthambore is also designated as a famous heritage site due to the ancient ruins of the 10th century Ranthambore Fort. The Sher Bagh site was designed in the style of 1920s classic safari camps, with tents all pitched under the canopy of indigenous trees planted by the owner’s family over the past three decades. Also run by Sujan, the Sher Bagh features the same theme. With twelve tents in total, there are ten air-conditioned luxury tents that feature a veranda with campaign furniture, en-suite stone bathrooms attached to the large fully furnished bedroom with a bedside butler bell. The luxury ‘Pukka Sahib’ suite sits in the shade of gooseberry and wild guava trees with its own private walled in garden, jacuzzi, open-air tree shower and a butler. The royal ‘Burra Sahib’ suite is set in a walled in space protected by grassed walls with a private heated swimming pool and a private butler.

Chamba Camp, Thiksey, Ladakh Chamba Camp can be found in Thiksey, a hamlet that lies at an altitude of 3,500 meters sitting in between the Stok Kangri and Ladakh range mountains. Set in the shadows of the famed Thiksey Monastery, the camp is made up of two different kinds of accommodation. The Luxury Suite Tent comprises of a fully furnished bedroom, en-suite bathroom and a veranda area. The Presidential Suite Tents have an extra wing that can accommodate two extra beds, a bed and seating area, or a

complete lounge setting. All the tents have large windows so that guests can enjoy the breath-taking views and air conditioning and heating are also provided depending on the location and requirement. Camp facilities include a reception tent including a Wi-Fi zone, boutique shop, library and lobby area. The dining tent provides international and local cuisine made by chefs using fresh and unprocessed local produce, as well as an in-house bakery.

Product News The Conker For the operators of luxury glamping parks the demand is always there for better, more comfortable (and more Instagrammable) glamping options. The Conker might just be the next big thing. Designed by Cheshire-based automotive engineer Jag Virdie, the Conker is his personal dream made real. Jag’s experience with RollRoyce, Bentley, Lotus and aerospace clients has taught him to design with the customer’s comfort and safety in mind, an approach known as ‘User Centred Design.’ He says: “Aerospace and automotive engineers have learnt how to integrate engineering excellence into understanding what the customer wants and I’m bringing this same philosophy to construction. With that in mind, I also wanted to focus on what our planet really needs to.” “With our increased awareness of the depletion of natural resources, I applied the most state-of-the-art thinking to the design, to ensure absolutely minimal impact on any environment in which it is placed and in its ongoing operation.” “It can be erected in just one day and built to operate completely off the grid, via solar panels. It can also be hooked up to a mains electric grid, or be fitted with rechargeable batteries. We can even use mini HEP stations near running water and wind power, to cover all eventualities. This means it’s suitable for use in even very remote locations, where, because of its four minimal anchor points, it has almost zero impact upon the ground in which it is set. The spherical design allows for natural run-off when it rains and no, or

very small, foundations ensures zero impact on natural drainage. For the occupiers, a heat-exchange pump ensures a comfortable maintained temperature and a constant flow of fresh air, which really aids sleep and optimises the body’s metabolism.” “The glamping Conker can be designed to offer a bedroom with room for a double bed; storage space for clothes, shoes, etc; a kitchen-ette; and even an en-suite with a loo and a shower. It’s perfect for glampers seeking the outdoor experience, without any niggling discomforts. We can even link multiple Conkers, to create extra bedrooms, bigger bathrooms or kitchens, a sitting room – really, the only limit is your imagination!” “It’s a solid year-round glamping solution that will extend the operating calendar for managed glamping parks that doesn’t cost the earth, either in economic or environmental terms.” And the cherry on top? Every element of this beautiful structure has been designed and made in the UK, before being assembled in Cheshire. To learn more about the Conker, see it at The Glamping Show or visit the website: www.conkerliving.co.uk.

Anthropods To be Launched At Glamping Show This month sees the global launch of Anthropods, created by Rik Currie, an industrial designer who was previously a designer at a Dutch railway company, Nerderlandse Spoorwegen. Anthropods, a new approach in the design and construction of glamping and temporary accommodation will be launched at this year’s Glamping Show

from both the UK and overseas markets and have already sold a number of Anthropods offplan to glamping operators before the first prototype has been completed. The market is growing fast both here and abroad and we believe the time is right to bring futuristic design and manufacturing disciplines to this exciting sector,’ says Currie.

Featuring an innovative, trade-mark registered, leg design and other unusual features such as its fuselage shape and construction, Anthropods not only looks revolutionary but can be sited on uneven ground and requires minimal ground work; just 4 x 600 mm square pads for the leg pads to sit on.

Featuring a breathable internal membrane and recyclable insulation, an Anthropod is an all-year product, keeping cool in summer and warm in winter. Each pod comes with a three-year guarantee with an expected life-cycle of twenty-five years plus. Prices start from under £16,000 £21,000 and the pods come in 6/4/2 berth versions. Interior fit-outs are bespoke but offer a combination of an integral shower/toilet/basin unit, cooking hob and micro-wave, fridge, wood burning stove/and or electric heating, solar panels (off-grid version only), ample storage space, a large, circular opening rear viewing window with a Brille Soleil, and a variety of side window options. It is anticipated that a typical glamping operator’s ROI will be fifteen months.

The pod comes in either 7.2 metre or 5.3 metre lengths and are 2.6 metres wide. Available in either on-grid or off-grid versions; the pods come fully fitted on a flat-bed truck to site and single units do not require planning permission. Once on site they can be easily moved to different seasonal locations. ‘We have received very positive interest

The interior fittings feature clever, curved units to maximise the rounded shape and increase the sense of a widening space; headroom is 2.1 metres. The exterior finish is cedar wood but plain aluminium can also be specified. www.anthropods.co.uk

Saniflo makes posh portable bathroom facilities a reality Saniflo UK – a leading designer and manufacturer of pumps, macerators and shower cubicles – is helping to take the concept of portable toilet facilities to a whole new level with the supply of the Saniaccess and Sanishower to the country’s number one provider of temporary WCs, Hampshire-based Site Equip. Family-owned and run business Site Equip has been supplying temporary WC facilities across the UK since 1988, and recently decided to satisfy a demand in the market for posh portable bathroom facilities with the launch of two upmarket trailer units with integrated bathroom facilities, suitable for disabled customers. Made possible thanks to Saniflo, the mobile units feature a shower, basin and flushing WC. The Saniaccess macerator removes waste from the WC and the Sanishower removes grey water from the

shower. Both units are located behind a separate panel at the back of the trailer and are connected to the appliances via pipes that run under the floor and through the panel. A holding tank outside the trailer connects to the discharge pipes that discreetly run out of the trailer floor. The two trailers have made successful debut appearances at several prestigious events including Pub in the Park, Love Supreme and Brighton Pride with future bookings for Boomtown and Standon Calling in the pipeline. Site Equip co-founder and co-owner, Geoff Gilbert, says: “Using the pumps has enabled us to offer a high-quality bathroom to disabled customers at events, festivals and parties. We firmly believe that the same level of facilities should be on offer to all. So far, the two new units are working out very well and

we plan to build at least 30 units per year following the positive response we’ve had.” Saniflo UK Head of Marketing and Product Development, Ann Boardman, adds: “The range of applications for Saniflo products really knows no bounds. Not only are we able to help provide much better temporary, mobile toilet facilities at British events, but we’re also able to help a long-standing British family firm grow its business. It’s a win for everyone.”

Innovation is the key In 2009, Outstanding perceived a demand for luxury safari tent vacations, and noticed it wasn’t easy for campsite owners to meet this demand. They started to design and produce their own tents and the results have been exceptional. Nowadays, Outstanding tents have been sited in 40 countries worldwide: from England to Mexico, from Canada to Brazil. The company honours its name by constantly striving for excellent materials, service and innovative tents. They only manufacture their safari tents from the very best materials. Because of this, an Outstanding tent has a lifespan of a decade. And that makes the initial investment all the more worthwhile. Outstanding can provide what they call a ‘relaxing adventure’. meaning they can deliver the tents including transport, complete assembly and installation. Their goal is helping campsite owners to profit from the growing demand for glamping. This ever-growing popularity is a positive development, but also means that more and more campsites are starting to offer glamping. Therefore innovation is essential to stand out from the crowd. In order to offer more choice, they have extended their range over the last year with the Compact, Safari Cottage and the Medley Lodge. The introduction of new models isn’t the only development. Recently Outstanding started a promising cooperation with James and Suzie King from Camping Travel Store. With their extensive knowledge of the camping and glamping market, they will represent Outstanding in the UK. Of course Outstanding will attend the Glamping Show this year and both James and Suzie will be present for advice and to introduce themselves. Claiming to be innovative, Outstanding felt the motivation to come up with something new for this years’ show. “It’s one of our favourite places to exhibit, we wanted to do something unique,” says Anouk, marketeer at Outstanding. “The key word to keep up with the Glamping trend is innovation and I think we’ve found a way to show our ambition to differentiate at the show. It’s the place to be for people sharing the same passion for camping. We’re looking forward to meet interested people and gain new inspiration.” For more information: www.outstandingtent.co.uk

Grill N’ Chill by Certainly Wood Certainly Wood has created a fantastic new product to introduce people to the delights of cooking on wood. The new Grill N’ Chill bag contains approximately 15 finer-split logs and is perfect for use in a fire pit, BBQ or pizza oven.

By providing people with finer-split logs, they’ll find the whole process of creating an outdoor fire a lot quicker and easier. The Grill N’ Chill logs are ready to cook on as quickly as charcoal, but provide a more natural smoky flavour to food.

Certainly Wood’s logs are sustainably sourced from British woodlands, chosen for their density, which ensures they provide maximum heat. The logs are then kiln-dried to reduce their moisture content, which means they provide a cleaner burn with less smoke and fewer sparks.

The logs are also ideal for anyone who wants to forget about cooking and spend a relaxing evening outside, enjoying a nice glass of wine by the warmth of a Grill N’ Chill fire. Grill N’Chill bags have a RRP of £7.49.

Maintenance

Canvas

Troubleshooting

If you have canvas tents, or are thinking of getting some, you need to know about canvas care as well as looking after tents in general. One should remember that they are tents after all, and you can't just put them up and forget about them when the weather turns, or let them sit unheated through the winter. If you want something lower maintenance, there’s always more solid structures like huts. But personally, I think the romance, beauty and simplicity of nomadic tents, such as tipis and yurts, is worth the effort. Canvas First, I would advise you NOT to go for cheap canvas, however tempting it seems. Many imported Mongolian yurts are made from a heavy canvas suited to the dry climate of Mongolia that doesn't adapt well to European weather, causing the canvas to leak. Our main work is making yurt covers, and have re-covered many a Mongolian yurt barely in its infancy.

The usual canvas used in the UK is 12oz FWR (flame, water and rot-proofed) poly/cotton. Before 2007, cotton was more popular, but the rot-proofing agent used in the proofing was banned, so a new one was used which was actually water-soluble! It meant that there was a batch of bad canvas around that time accompanied by horror stories of canvas rotting after a year. Although a new rotproofing agent was developed, the industry stuck with poly/cotton as it is more rot-resistant and stronger, with 50% polyester content. The lifespan of canvas depends on many factors, so we don't offer any guarantee on its life, but if looked after, one can expect 5-7 years for a tent left up all year. Tents pitched under trees can get dirty from falling leaves and tree sap run-off, shortening their lifespan. Always avoid pine and willow. Also, if pitched in the shade, the canvas doesn't dry out so quickly and generally in the UK, the damp is more damaging than UV. In hotter climates, such as Southern Europe, the UV exposure damages the cotton element of the canvas, so it is worth thinking about alternatives to poly/cotton.

General Maintenance We recommend reproofing the canvas once a year, which greatly increases its longevity. Before reproofing, clean the canvas with a soft brush and warm water, no soap, no scrubbing and no pressure washing. Remember that any cleaning will remove some of the proofing. (White canvas shows the dirt and mould more than other colours, so many of our customers are choosing to replace white covers with darker colours, such as sand). Reproofing is usually done with a paint-on solution when the tent goes up for the season - various products are available, but mostly only contain waterproofing and rotproofing agents. Recently the FWR proofing solution used by the manufacturers themselves has become available. (We can supply this at manufacturers’ cost). We have heard stories of tent covers being sent to professional cleaners, who have little experience of canvas and come back unproofed and

sometimes perished, although there are now companies who can clean and reproof for you. If you leave your tents standing through winter, it is important to heat them once every few days with a wood-burning stove (or open fire in a tipi). If the tents are not being used, they should be taken down when the canvas is bone dry and packed somewhere dry and rodent free. The summer before last we had a mouse invasion at our site in Italy and we were surprised to discover that the mice chose to eat through the proofed canvas of the yurts rather than the wool blankets and mattresses inside. No accounting for taste. (Troubleshooting rodents and creepy-crawlies is for another chapter). There is a common perception that cottons are more 'natural' than synthetic fabrics, but people forget that they are proofed with chemicals. Our customers are choosing to go for acrylic fabrics as an alternative to poly/cotton as, although much more expensive, they are a better investment long-term, greatly outlasting the poly/cotton as it doesn't rot and it’s also stronger. It is a woven fabric so looks almost identical to poly/cotton, yet feels nicer to touch and stays clean for much longer. The acrylic proofing isn't in a coating but in the thread itself, thus doesn't need reproofing the same way. We are Spirits Intent, expert makers of nomadic tents and specialists in the canvas side of things, call on us if you need any advice on canvas or need new covers for your structures.

World of Glamping

World of Glamping The global glamping accreditation and awards organisation, World of Glamping, has signed up new sites to its collection – as well as creating two itineraries of glamping site tours through Slovenia.

Grows in Influence

Keemala Thailand The full version of the World of Glamping website will be fully live this month featuring all of the properties within the exclusive collection. Founder Maja Dimnik is also preparing further itineraries of glamping tours in other countries, a glamping guide and the first global glamping awards scheme – where people will be able to leave reviews and rate the glamping site they feel should receive an award. New sites that have been added to the World of Glamping accreditation scheme

include Shinta Mani in Cambodia, which will open in November 2018, as well as Glamping resort Fešta in Croatia which just opened this summer. They join the other glamping resorts which are currently undergoing the accreditation process, namely Keemala in Thailand, Saruni in Kenya, Under Canvas in the USA, Treehotel in Sweden, Shinta Playa Viva in Mexico, Glamping Resort Fešta in Croatia, Glamping Chateau Ramšak in Slovenia and Kabru in Brazil.

“We are very pleased to see that new resorts and hotels, which in our opinion clearly fall into the category of glamping are opening up all over the world,” says Maja. “People are very aware of setting the quality, uniqueness, sustainability and luxury to their service and offer. Some notable examples of this include Awakening in Mexico, Shipwreck Lodge in Namibia, Capela Ubud in Bali, and One & Only Gorilla's Nest in Ruanda – among many more”.

SHINTA MANI WILD

Shinta Mani Wild

This resort which has joined the World of Glamping collection recently is a new, luxury tented camp in Cambodia. It is a private nature sanctuary with 15 tents, set along 1.5 kilometres of river and waterfalls offering luxury safaris in the jungle, opening on 1st November 2018. Three of Cambodia’s oldest and most important parks, together make up one of the greatest wilderness areas of South East Asia. A wild coast of pristine estuaries gives way to a mountain range covered in rainforest that is one of the few remaining habitats in Cambodia for wild elephants, bears, gibbons, tigers and numerous other species. Shinta Mani Wild is a new model for public/private partnerships that will not only conserve and protect threatened wildlands, but will also create new and sustainable opportunities for the people that traditionally call these lands home. Guests will be able to explore the untrammeled waterways of the South East, accompany rangers and researchers as they check camera traps and study the wild forests and their inhabitants. www.shintamani.com/wild.php

Our Charitable Trust International Glamping Business and The Glamping Show together with awardwinning glamping site Camp Kátur are proud to announce – Glamp Aid – the glamping industry’s first charitable trust. “Glamp Aid is an initiative designed to bring the glamping sector closer through fundraising for good causes,” says Kerry Roy, Founder of Camp Kátur and Glamp Aid trustee.

“As our industry grows and becomes more mature, we are looking for new ways to come together. We felt that fundraising would help us to unite with others we do business with, while supporting those less fortunate than

ourselves,” adds Steph Curtis-Raleigh, Editor of International Glamping Business. “Although this is a UK charity, it helps people from all over the world, so I hope our international readers will also get behind it.”

Aid Box Community Glamp Aid has appointed its first charity – Aid Box Community (ABC), based in Bristol in the UK. The charity came about in September 2015 when founder Imogen McIntosh saw the shocking images of three-year-old Aylan Kurdi – the Syrian toddler who was washed up on a Turkish shore. Imogen and a small group of friends began mobilising their resources towards doing something to help. “We’d seen and read about the horrendous conditions in refugee camps in northern France and decided on a single mission - to deliver tents, sleeping bags and 300 aid boxes containing complete survival kits to a small, forgotten refugee camp in Dunkirk,” she says. The first aid box convoy arrived in Dunkirk in October 2014. The camp was

situated on marsh land on the edge of a suburban housing estate. It was ratinfested, waterlogged due to non-existent drainage or sanitation, and at its peak there were thought to be 4000 people living in the most squalid conditions, bordering on starvation. “With our first load of aid only scratching the surface of what was needed, we had no choice but to keep collecting donations and raising funds to buy essential supplies. Emotional, logistical and personal support for people living in the camp was desperately lacking so we made a commitment to keeping a team on the ground. We remained on the ground until the camps eventual closure in the spring of 2016,” adds Imogen. Since ABC began, it has mobilised over 300 volunteers from Bristol and the south of England. These kind-hearted people have given their time to either work on the camp or help with the collection and delivery of over 1000 aid boxes and hundreds of van loads of emergency aid to the camp. ABC coordinated a team of volunteers on the ground in the camp every day for 8

months as well as a team of builders, who built communal kitchens. Working closely alongside MSF and other volunteer groups from across Europe, they helped to keep over 7000 people alive over the winter months. Miraculously, in all the time ABC involved in the camp, no-one died. Above all, this was testament to the resilience and community of the people of the camp. The camp was moved in March 2016 to a site with better sanitation and facilities. People were provided with wooden huts to live in and had access to a reliable clean water supply. Though still far from an ideal situation, people’s immediate needs were being met. So, on March 22nd 2016 ABC withdrew its team from the camp.

the UK are destitute and in need of food, aid and help to become independent and integrate into the community. Many people have been given their right to remain in the UK but now find themselves homeless, alone and unable to access jobs or housing,” she adds.

“However after witnessing the emotional, social, physical and mental struggles that refugees and asylum seekers face in the UK, we are now dedicating our time and resources to support refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol, who despite landing in

The Aid Box Community Hub is where the charity continues to collect, sort and deliver life-saving aid to send to displaced people in France and where they run a 'Free Shop' where destitute asylum seekers and refugees can access free goods such as

toiletries, basic household items, clothes and food. ABC also helps British people on the streets and donates to Bristol’s homeless charities. “Our next ambition is to move to bigger premises where we can support refuges and asylum seekers with their emotional needs, as well as their physical ones. We are really excited to be working with the Glamping industry in order to raise the funds that are so desperately needed by people who have literally nothing,” says Imogen.

Market Overview

Spanish Special

Spanish Glamping

Market Overview By Spanish Editor, Karen Southall

Tourists began to flock to Spain back in the 1950s when around one million visitors came to enjoy the Mediterranean beaches. By 1973 there were 34 million tourists and over 50 million by the mid 1980s. Today, with its 5,000km of coastline and around 300 days of coastal sunshine per year, almost 82 million tourists landed in Spain last year to enjoy the diverse mix of coast and culture. In fact, Spain looks set to overtake the US as the world’s second most popular tourism destination after France with earnings for the sector accounting for 16 per cent of GDP last year. Camping Red

Despite the pound taking a pummeling against the euro lately, the country still remains a good value destination with a Post Office report naming the Costa del Sol as the third cheapest European destination after Bulgaria and the Algarve. There are some 48,000 places to stay for holidays in Spain including almost 28,000 holiday homes and short stay accommodations, 19,500 hotels and over 1,200 campsites. According to statistics by the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica (INE) the total number of guests at campsites in 2017 amounted to almost eight million in total. The summer months see the largest number of visitors with 1.9 million guests in August alone. Although glamping is not categorised specifically the campsite statistics are divided into three categories – luxury/first class and class 2 and class 3

Spanish Special venues. The luxury and first class venues saw a total of 3.4 million guests in 2017 and 856,723 guests in August alone last year. The Federation of Camping claims the busiest summer months of July, August and September sees a total of around 22 million overnight stays on average. The region of Cataluña sees the biggest number of camping guests followed by Andalucia and then Valencia. The arrival of bungalows at campsites was a revelation to the sector and today they account for around 50 per cent of the offer on campsites with the remaining space allocated for 40 per cent for caravans and campervans and 10 per cent for tents. Many campsites also upgraded their sites replacing traditional swimming pools with aquatic centres or have added spas and entertainment facilities. Playa Montroig is a good example of a luxurious camping site in Spain. Located in Tarragona on the Costa Dorada on the north eastern coastline of Spain the resort offers 1,200 plots perched on the edge of the Mediterranean plus 39 high end bungalows equipped with everything from dishwashers to hammocks and air con. There is 5,000sq.m of aquatic areas with toboggan rides and kids games plus tennis and padel courts, football pitch, mini golf, gym, spa and organised activities. Prices start at €90 per night off season for a bungalow which sleeps four going up to over €300 for prime time July/August months. CampingRed is another high end company offering a chain of 22 campsites throughout Spain each with plots and bungalows and superb facilities. The Don Cactus facility in Granada for example offers over 40,000sq.m of campsite with plots and 21 bungalows plus swimming pools with waterfalls and jacuzzi, gym and kids play area. GlampingHub currently lists more than 350 glamping resorts in Spain from pods to yurts or tree houses whilst the camping sector in Spain generates around €1.5bn turnover a year and provides more than

11,500 direct jobs.

Ana Beriain, President of the Spanish Federation of Campings (FEEC) said: “Many companies have continued making large investments to offer our customers large resorts that we now have throughout the country. We estimate that more than 100,000 families will discover the sector this summer and will repeat in successive years.” Laws and regulations surrounding glamping vary among the 17 different autonomous regions in Spain which each have their own rules and laws. It’s difficult to pin down anything specific and most come under the Tourism laws and regulations for the various regions whilst individual town councils have to be consulted for permissions for certain structures. In Andalucia, for example, tourism camps are currently regulated via the Ministry of Tourism and Sports although individual town councils will be responsible for permissions for any building or structure. Interestingly this region has just recently recognised glamping as a specific option and introduced a new decree on the management of tourism camps in the region and introduced new formats to guarantee the quality of service offered to customers. This decree replaces one from back in 2003. The most significant points include: The introduction of a star categorisation for campsites. The five star category classification for campsites replaces the four stars previously offered and is based on services and facilities. It is designed to work alongside those operating in other regions and EU member states. There is now a new unique category for

Playa Montroig

‘overnight areas’ for motor homes which can be parked in adjoining and differentiated areas for camping with regulations for the services offered at these facilities. There continues to be no camping permitted outside of campsites. The decree also includes eight ‘voluntary’ speciality labels for tourist camps that can offer different activities based on: Glamping; Ecological Camping; Ecolodge; Bungalow; Themed Camping; Motorhome/Camper; Mobile home or Singular Camping. The glamping category must have a minimum of four stars and camping facilities or fixed accommodation such as bungalows or cabins (or a mix of the two) with a capacity for a maximum of 350 places. The growth of glamping continues to look buoyant for the Spanish market. From a couple of yurts or caravans on a bit of spare land to large-scale glamping and camping resorts the market has significant scope for development. www.playamontroig.com www.campingred.es www.fedcamping.com

Renewable Energy & Glamping

By Spanish Editor, Karen Southall

Ever since solar power first made its debut in the 1960s the development of this technology has evolved immensely and today there are various products out there in the world of luxury camping products, whilst also providing power for glamping sites. From mini panels for backpacks; solar panels for campervans and even solar tents, if there’s a flat surface inline to direct sunlight then basically most products are fair game for a solar power platform. Over the last few years there has been a huge increase in the number of glamping sites eager to incorporate renewable solar or wind energy into their locations with many offering a complete off-grid experience. With its wall-to-wall sunshine, Spain is top of the solar power and eco tourism charts and glamping has become the perfect partner. Glamping itself is of course a low-impact green activity in that it allows campers to be close to the outside environment and nature. Accommodation is often created by using sustainable materials, sites often provide access to farm shops or home grown on-site produce, they utilise environmentally friendly products and are often inclined to promote eco-friendly activities. Our reliance on raw materials and renewable sources of energy is becoming increasingly important. Wind, solar and hydroelectric power are the primary three renewable sources for many countries and Spain is top of the class averaging around 40 per cent renewable energy share. This is divided up between 20 per cent wind power (23GW), 17-18 per cent hydropower (18.6GW) and about three per cent solar power (7.13GW). The remainder is made up of non renewable energy such as nuclear and coal. Spain’s Mediterranean coastline boasts over 300 days of sunshine a year and today is one of the ten top countries to utilise solar power in terms of energy provision and was

40

also the first countries in the world to use Concentrated Solar Power systems. Wind power is Spain’s second source of electrical generation and the country is fifth in the world in terms of installed wind power after China, the US, Germany and India.

glamping sector is increasing. For a basic level of comfort in a yurt for example (lights, sockets) sites could easily cope with just 500w output. If they require washing machines to operate on solar then 3,000w inverters and above could be installed.

The country had a leading role in the development of solar power but after the 2008 global recession not only did the property market collapse but in 2012 the Spanish government cut subsidies for solar power and imposed a moratorium. A limited number of projects were carried out during this period and as the Spanish market came to a standstill many companies merely ventured further a field to expand their business.

Sustainable Energy consultant James Stubberfield of Solar Power Malaga said: “There is a general move towards installing more solar all across Spain and this will almost certainly apply to glamping sites, especially since they are often far away from stable grid sources and usually run by environmentally conscious people.

Since 2013, solar growth in Spain has been extremely slow although it has still managed to maintain its position as leader in the deployment of solar thermal power, mainly due to projects which were already put into place before 2012. Just 49MW was added in Spain in 2015, 55MW in 2016 and 135MW in 2017 according to figures from the Union Española Fotovoltaica (UNEF). It didn’t exactly help that the Spanish government then also decided to introduce a ‘sun tax’ which panicked the nation. In theory this doesn’t apply to any residential sized grid-tied system (ie: anything less than 10kw has no tax applied) and there’s no tax for off-grid systems of any size. Today, investors are re-looking at the Spanish market after a decade spent in the shadows whilst a drop in the price of solar panels and lower construction costs means projects are beginning to move forward again. Meanwhile, the move towards solar in the

“Solar can offer various benefits. The sites can be far away from towns and villages and their associated infrastructures without having to forfeit conveniences like lighting, charging, music or pumped water and also it gives them the opportunity of the production of clean energy instead of having to run a fossil fuelled power generator. “I think the future is great for off grid glamping in Spain, due to the increasing popularity of glamping holidays and due to the simplicity, autonomy and cost effectiveness of small off grid power systems for remote locations.” The Green Mountain Yurt in the Alpujarras region of Granada operates a glamping site via solar power. They have a self-catering yurt available which is totally off-grid. The yurt houses a double bed plus two-seater sofa and dining table plus wood burner stove for winter stays and access to the Yurt Shack which has the outdoor kitchen facilities and bathroom consisting of a composting toilet. The hot water for the kitchen and bathroom and basic lighting systems are provided via a dedicated solar panel whilst

Spanish Special the kitchen is gas although there is also a solar cooker available for guests if they prefer the complete off-grid experience. Meanwhile Cloud House Farm in the Rio Genal Valley near Ronda in Andalucia also offers yurt accommodation and natural water swimming via nearby fresh water river pools. It’s a family run site set up by former Product Designer Dan and his English teacher wife Justine and now their two young sons Fredy and Teo. The project began as a self-build renovating ruins using local timber and materials and adopting ecological principles. The farm is now 100 per cent off grid utilising solar power, forest fuels for heating and cooking, while fresh water is gravity-fed from natural springs with storage tanks and wastewater is filtered and re-used in the garden.

There are two yurts available – the Orange Grove Yurt and Woodland Yurt housed with double bed and futons offering solar power which power the lights, charging sockets and there’s a compost toilet, shower room and outdoor kitchen whilst they also offer a solar oven on request. Dan said: “We’re far from any grid connection and as the terrain is mountainous there aren’t the constant winds that can make wind power an option. Solar power was the most practical and cheapest option at the time. The site is 100 per cent run on solar and although we do have a diesel-powered generator, it rarely gets used, even on a cloudy day we pull in enough power to power the house. “We have two panel arrays of six panels each. We started with six 125w panels back in 2004 then four years ago we expanded with a new array of six 250w panels and these are modern and super-efficient. This brings in a total of 2,250w which isn’t a lot by UK standards but due to the sunshine hours in Andalucia we have more power than we can utilise.

Green Mountain Yurt

“People are surprised we are 100 per cent off grid and it certainly adds an ‘eco’ dimension to their holiday experience as they become more aware of the power they are using as we prefer people not to use high powered devices such as hairdryers.” www.solarpowermalaga.com www.greenmountainyurt.com www.cloudhouse.es

Orugami

Spanish Special On Spanish soil there are various glamping sites offering tree-top builds and manufacturer Orugami has developed a new generation of innovative designs and techniques for an eco friendly and versatile structure. The specialised designs have been developed by the Cantabrian-based company, which provides customised structures which are ecological using the least amount of materials possible. Orugami is the brainchild of architects Marta Olarte Solazábal and Daniel Simínovich who studied at the Polytechnical University in Madrid specialising in tensile architecture. They took part in a Development Project which took them to the Atacama Desert in Peru to develop a structure covering that was suitable enough to withstand violent UV rays, strong winds and even earthquakes! Daniel said: “After this project, we thought we could focus the incredible capacities that this material has – the enormous tension strength, it’s tear-resistant, fire-resistant, waterproof, self-cleaning and has a long life span - into a new type of product, self resistant skins that could create fabric micro-architecture that hangs from the trees and creates a suspended house with no impact on nature, that could be installed in protected environments. “The first idea was to make a shelter for nature using the minimum amount of materials and structure, which could be carried, installed in the forest and uninstalled without leaving any footprint. From there, came our very first Orugami concept – a hanging shelter for the Peruvian Amazon forest. It can keep people safe from beasts on the ground by being suspended from trees and is also a safe place from storms. “Then we focused on the glamping market where we thought that we could provide original, customised, long-lasting, weatherresistant, but still light and nature-friendly installations.” So the Orugami brands were born. The two main glamping facilities are the Orugami Terra Glamping and the Orugami Sky Glamping. The material is made from high tenacity polyester fabric with a PVC coating.

The Orugami Terra is available in two versions. The Wood version sits on the ground on a wooden flooring whilst the Hammock version offers a hanging hammock inside. Structurally the walls and ceiling are made with textiles that cover the interior space, protecting it from the elements, whilst also connecting it to the exterior. Doors, windows and ventilation areas are covered with a special type of material that can also be opened. Designed in the shape of an old gypsy-style caravan, the Orugami Terra is detachable and transportable and can be easily installed in most locations. It is 2.40 metres in length and 4.80 metres wide by 2.70 metres high. The main structure is made up of stainless steel hoops plus ropes and wires. Meanwhile the Orugami Sky is the vertical version or the ‘floating shelter’ as it’s known and enables guests to sleep from the treetops in comfort with a bird’s eye view of the landscape. Again, there is minimal infrastructure needed, as these can be placed in any location with the right trees as a single accommodation unit or to form a unique glamping site which will invariably end up looking like giant Chinese lanterns hanging from the trees. There are two levels to this structure, the first houses the double bed and above there is extra space for storage or a further two single beds if needed. The space offers a 360º view from the observatory window with extra storage beneath the inverted cone below. It takes three people to install; following the assembly guide and materials are the same as the Terra uses, so waterproof and tear-proof.

was selected in 2014 and 2016 for the Central de Diseño Madrid exhibition whilst it has also been featured in various design and architectural magazines. Currently there is an Orugami Terra located in Baños de la Luz in Tarifa, while a product was tested at the Monte Holiday campsite in Madrid and there have been two temporary installations in Cantabria and public exhibitions in Matadero de Madrid. Meanwhile, there is also an Orugami flying game in Vesterland, a hotel playground in Kaupanger, Norway. Daniel added: “The Spanish glamping market is developing but still slower than many other European countries, despite the climate which is more appropriate for glamping than many other places. I think that when they become aware it is worth investing in long-lasting, original, design good-quality glamping devices, the situation will improve. We are very confident of the development of glamping in this region, not only Spain, but in the south of France and Portugal, it is going to increase each year. “We think our Orugami structures have a wide range of applications and we are continuously improving, updating and adapting our models to different types of contexts and clients. In the future we want to develop more complex models, with a higher degree of customisation and comfort, adapted to cool-cold climates and that are faster to install. In the mid-term we expect that our experience drives us from little projects to big installations. Glamping is going to be an alternative to investing in buildings. www.orugami.com dsiminovich@orugami.com

These are superb options for eco rural tourism locations, magical playhouses or even shelters in and among a zip wire circuit for adventure parks. They leave no footprint behind as they are completely detachable and portable. The diameter of the lower level is 2.6 metres and the upper 3.2 metres whilst the minimum height required for installation is five metres. The company was a finalist in the UPM Start Up Awards in 2013 and the project

GLAMPING AND RETREATS

in Spain By Spanish Editor, Karen Southall

Suryalila

Around 25 years ago, when I was just out of college I landed on the island of Tenerife with my backpack at the start of my travelling years. I remember asking the waiter in a local bar if he had something on the menu for vegetarians. After a puzzled look and a shrug he brought me a Sopa de Puchero and a salad. Now, this traditional Spanish soup might look like just dishwater but don’t let it deceive you as lurking at the bottom of the bowl were bits of ham, while salads invariably have a big serving of tuna on top (sigh). The Spanish were, and still are, die-hard meat and fish eaters and at one time it was virtually impossible to see anything on the menu that didn’t contain meat somewhere, somehow. But times are changing and the Spanish understanding of all things holistic, ethical and ecological are also slowly evolving.

and wellness and mindfulness classes, workshops and retreats are springing up all over the country faster than you can say ‘OM’. With a large foreign community influence and a change in the younger Spanish ideals, all-things-holistic – whether it is shops, retreats or courses are now becoming thriving businesses and an important lifestyle change for many. Meanwhile with an impressive outdoor recreation opportunity, huge renewable energy sources and conservation efforts, eco-tourism is fast becoming a thing for many areas in Spain.

The number of vegan and vegetarian restaurants has increased significantly for example. Back in 2011, the Happy Cow Vegetarian website listed 353 vegetarian or vegan restaurants in Spain. Today this has increased to almost 2,000.

It is totally understandable therefore that Retreats and Glamping are able to work hand in hand with both sides able to use each other to complement their businesses plans.

Asking for a vegetarian dish is no longer a swear word whilst raw food, yoga, meditation, tai chi, detox diets, spiritual

For those organising retreats, Spain is a perfect choice for a location While glamping sites are able to combine their

offer with vegertarian/vegan cooking classes or dining options. Many are promoting eco-tourism, whether it be renewable energy or recycling, meanwhile, others are going the full nine yards and offering retreats to run alongside their accommodation offer whether it’s meditation, mindfulness, detox, health, weight loss, creative writing, photography, fitness, walking, cooking, life coaching, therapy, spiritual classes or yoga for example. There are so many to choose from but here’s a quick sample of some of the most impressive glamping/retreats locations in Spain: Suryalila Retreat Centre is located near the village of Arcos de la Frontera in Cadiz, in a beautifully old, renovated olive farm, which is made up of eight houses, which form the cortina, with inner courtyards blooming with orange and lemon trees. The property is set on 45 acres of land and is a working olive farm with 350 trees.

Glamping Retreats

Spanish Special The rooms inside the house are tastefully decorated and there are three yoga halls – the Ganesha Yoga Shala, which holds up to 30 people; the Om Dome, overlooking the hills and olive groves, holds up to 60 with under floor heating and cooling and the Moon Shala which is a sustainable cob-built structure in the olive grove holds up to 16 people. Suryalila was founded by a group of friends and today is managed by Vidya Heisel who is the director and an international yoga teacher. Vidya grew up in the UK but has lived in India, Bali and the US and arrived in Spain in 2011. Vidya said: “Including glamping as a sleeping option at our retreat centre gives our guests a more affordable option and also offers them a real back to nature experience. At night you can hear the sounds of owls and horses nearby and if you need to pop out to the bathroom in the middle of the night you are overwhelmed with an incredible canopy of stars. “We chose this particular location because it is in the very heart of Andalucia and is equidistant between the culturally rich cities of Seville, Jerez,

Ronda and Cadiz and Andalucia is arguably one of the most beautiful regions in Spain with the best weather and beaches.” Retreats range from four-night yoga retreats to yoga festivals, teacher training and Spanish language retreats. There are double rooms available for those seeking comfort inside the house, there are dorm rooms sleeping up to eight - then outside on the land there are three Eco Casas; Deluxe Yurts (double, triple or family size) or a Twin Tent. There’s a salt water pool, sauna, permaculture and organic farm, boutique shop for yoga equipment, therapists and gourmet vegetarian cuisine provided. For those who prefer a more active retreat - there is surfing. Dreamsea Surf Camp in Ruilobuca, Cantabria in the north of Spain is located in the campsite El Helguero, whilst the camp offers a whole host of activities from surfing to yoga, sports, massage, concerts and excursions. There are basic 10 hour-long surf lessons per week or a 15-hour intensive course for newcomers with all the equipment

provided whilst accommodation is in the luxurious glamping tents for couples or there are also shared fully furnished tents for groups or families. The campsite El Helguero meanwhile also offers camping plots and bungalows. Dreamsea began six years ago in France and has been active in Spain for the last four years. Alba Camacho Reina said: “I think glamping and retreats work so well together because glamping blends with nature in a harmonious, peaceful and magic way, generating a perfect environment and location for a retreat.” Also in the north of Spain is Astrurias Yoga retreat centre offering Ashtanga yoga and teacher training courses plus massage and healthy dining run by partners Alysia Simeone and Simon Loughlin. The retreat is located in the heart of the mountainous chestnut forests of Los Picos de Europa national park and provides various accommodation options from a comfortable private room in a cabin to economical options in bell tents set on their land or via the nearby Casa Rural for those looking for more luxury.

Samantha runs a series of workshops and retreats throughout the year from yoga and yoga teacher training retreats; pilates; mind, body and spirit retreats; creative writing and painting and art workshops. Samantha said: “We offer workshops, courses and retreats in the creative and healing arts so anything from yoga, meditation, creative writing, Qi Gong or painting. We also have work-away programmes where people come and stay with us and help us with our projects in exchange for food and board.

They support sustainable living and the yoga centre and guest house all function off solar power whilst water comes from a natural mountain spring, the heating from a wood burning stove and the forests, land and orchard provide an abundance of seasonal vegetables, nuts and fruit. Alysia said: “The concept of glamping combines camping in nature with comfort and many people are instinctively drawn towards connecting in a deeper way with nature and realise the benefit such connection can have on energising the body and mind. “However when it comes down to it, the thought of being squished into a tent, or trying to get a week of rest on a little camping mat is often enough to deter people before even setting out. “The furnished bell tents we prepare provide participants with the comforts of a bedroom and security of some spacious living while still only being the width of the tent’s fabric away from evening owl song, the morning bird chorus and the sound and smell of the natural elements like wind and rain. The yoga practice has the effect of refining the senses, making all of these outside influences much more pronounced and intoxicating. “We were drawn here by a shared vision of living simply and in harmony with the environment around us. Practicing and

sharing yoga is our passion and our retreats and teacher training courses serve as the vehicle for making this possible.” Meanwhile relative newcomers to the retreat and glamping scene is Riverheart Retreats located in the south of Spain in Coin near Malaga who held their first retreat in June last year. This place was set up by Samantha Short and her partner Mike Helme and they offer accommodation via a wooden selfcontained chalet, two little wooden cabins, a bell tent, a Sami Lavvu Scandinavian teepee for solo travellers or Suryalila

Glamping in Gran Canaria

It’s all in the planning What’s the background to you wanting to open a glamping site in Gran Canaria?

How did you hear about the rules concerning glamping in Gran Canaria?

About a year ago we decided to consider starting a new business in Spain. Originally, we were going to make the move in 2024 when my youngest son became 18 but the impending Brexit made us rethink our original plans and we started to plan on what form our business could take. Richard had experience in the travel and hospitality industry and so we decided to investigate this area. He advised against a restaurant or bar as there is so much competition and we wanted something we could both enjoy without working long shifts. At the time, we noticed the emergence of Glamping in the UK and started looking at what this involved, the types of accommodation available, the sites they were on, the prices and what the income projections might be based on varying occupancy levels. We then thought about mainland Spain but as this would be our main and only source of income, we needed somewhere with a year-round climate and tourism industry so the Canary Islands became our focus. Initially, we looked at all four main islands but Gran Canaria stood out for us due to the beauty of the inland rural areas where we considered a Glamping project would give our clients amazing views!

Whilst looking at the four main islands (Lanazarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuerteventura) we investigated existing Glamping projects and noted there were hardly any on any island. On Gran Canaria we found nothing at all but whilst searching on the internet came across an article in Spanish on the government website produced in 2017 that luckily used the term ‘Glamping’. This article discussed how eco-tourism was developing and how they should promote the existence of such sites on the island, the article further went on to be quite specific about the rules, only rural areas not within range of urban tourism developments, not within certain range of the coast, no permanent structures and able to exist without being attached to services (off grid) and no harm to flora or fauna. It was a start.

How is your Spanish? When considering moving to Spain we were aware that neither of us spoken the language. Since making the decision, we have both taken up daily lessons to learn as much as possible, we both believe that you need to be able to integrate and communicate and become part of a community, alienating ourselves to just English-speaking communities would not suit us! Progress is slow but we can order beers at least!

How do you hope the process will happen - ie find site, apply for permission, buy site, build and open? About five months ago we commenced a search for suitable properties on Gran Canaria, we obviously needed somewhere with enough land but also with a property for ourselves to live in (even if we had to renovate it). After months of extensive research, we booked a viewing trip (July) to view the top 10 properties we believed to be suitable. We then started what has become a frustrating process to arrange to view these properties, our initial list quickly became reduced to just six! Now, the way it works on Gran Canaria is that there are several ‘super’ estate agents and then lots of smaller ones that might not even have physical offices. They all share the same database so the theory is that one agent can view every property on the market and thus arrange all the viewings (if the smaller agents are OK with them doing this), well that’s the theory anyway! We have found this not to be the case and that most agents aren’t interested unless you are buying

Interview with Simon Pendlebury, who is planning a new glamping business in Spain with his partner Richard. apartments in the main urban tourist areas, the North agents won’t cover the South etc. After two failed attempts at organising this we decided to approach each selling agent individually, this has brought some success, amongst lots of confusing Spanish emails and calls, but mainly no responses on others (even in Spanish). At the point of writing we have three agreed viewings and three that haven’t got back to us at all. We are hoping that we can arrange more whilst on the island. The idea is once we have viewed several properties our solicitor will commence contact with both the government and the local municipalities to obtain clarification on whether any such site would be suitable for our proposals. Unfortunately, we have been told that each department has a 6month response time! Once we obtain clarification we can commence to buy the site and move forward with our plans. We are currently thinking that if we find the perfect site, we might have to buy and then look for permission as we can’t afford to lose it and have to start all over again. Maybe naively we did think we could be open for the summer of 2020, watch this space!

What kind of accommodation and services would you like to offer once this is achieved? We want to open several geometric domes, we think the panoramic windows would suit the fantastic mountain scenery on Gran Canaria and the idea would be to offer a luxury B&B facility with a swimming pool. Our plans shift and move constantly throughout the planning process and new ideas come and old ones are dropped so it’s a constantly shifting game for us and we obviously must be aware of what local facilities are available and the environment given our rural remit. I am an artist and would love to offer classes and have a keen interest in food so promoting and/or using local products might also be an option.

Rural Delights IN INLAND SPAIN By Spanish Editor Karen Southall Inland Spain is often overlooked as the coastal resorts seem to be the main tourist attraction when you think of holidays. But if you look at the more rural regions of Andalucia, Extremadura or Castilla La Mancha, these regions are the most stunning around with wild and vast landscapes. This summer, we drove from coastal Andalucia and headed northeast through a patchwork of olive tree plantations in Jaen and across the border into the province of Albacete in the southern part of Castilla la Mancha. This region forms part of the 2,500km long Don Quixote eco-tourism route, which has been established with Castilla la Mancha featuring heavily throughout the book and Quixote’s journey. The Albacete province is divided into 87 municipalities and hosts a capital city with the same name. The province is about 260km southeast of Madrid and 170km from the Alicante coast. The Segura River is a medium-sized river, which begins in the Sierra de Segura in Jaen and ends up in the Mediterranean

Sea in Alicante. One of its tributaries includes the Rio Mundo which begins in Riópar – a small town in Albacete which was the destination point of our journey. The birth of the Rio Mundo (Nacimiento de Rio Mundo) is a breathtaking waterfall which erupts 100m above ground from a cave in a huge imposing gorge located just 5km from the quaint village of Riópar. The area is littered with Casas Rurales (Rural holiday homes) from bungalows to cabins or hostels and there is no shortage

of holiday accommodation for those preferring glamping to hotels. To access the Rio Mundo waterfall by car you can find the entrance monitored and well signposted from the road just outside the village. The entrance costs €4 per vehicle and you just follow the road down to a car park which can accommodate up to 100 cars. The walk itself begins from the car park and although it’s an uphill walk it’s easy with steps and bridges created along the way. There are various rules and regulations on entry – no picnics, no swimming and you must keep to the path – a shame but then the area is spotless and this also enables a vast number of visitors to come and go without overcrowding, so in reality completely appreciated. The round trip to the waterfall takes about an hour and a half. There is a picnic area about a kilometre further down the road plus another walking route of 8km from this point also. Each dome is ‘retro chic’ styled and has its own en suite bathroom with ecofriendly toilet and solar-heated shower. There’s a communal kitchen and shared porch area with healthy meals provided if required.

The smaller cabin we rented sleeps five and has two bedrooms, a cute mezzanine floor with a single bed, small but adequate kitchen, bathroom and living room. The outside area is glorious with a canopy of pine trees, stunning garden with wild strawberry plants and a large pond. The larger cabin has three bedrooms and can sleep up to seven people. It has an outdoor pool and has a few caravans also available for rental. Riópar is a picturesque little village in the Sierra del Segura mountain range. It boasts a tiny population of just 1,500 and you enter via a tree-lined street of chestnut trees which creates a tunnel effect. There are little more than four main streets housing restaurants, the town council building, cafes and a few shops. Portugal

Portuguese Potential By Portuguese Editor Eden Flaherty

Lisbon and Porto are hot names in tourism this year, drawing visitors from around the world. In fact, Portugal as a whole has a booming tourism industry, and with a reported 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s no surprise. Glamping, however, is still undeveloped and generally used as a secondary concern. Portugal was named as Europe’s leading destination in 2018 by the World Travel Awards and its tourism sector has been growing steadily for some years. Tourism is now worth roughly 10% of the country’s GDP — a figure expected to increase by 2020. The hotels, hostels, and campsites hosting the increasingly large numbers of tourists are seeing greater footfall and booming revenue.

areas”, including investing in “infrastructures and services to support nature tourism and/or tourism in rural areas.” The reasons for this are twofold. Firstly, there is a need to lessen the number of tourists in Portugal’s major cities, and secondly the wealth that tourism brings needs to be spread across the country — especially in the as-of-yet untouched interior.

According to the latest report by Statistics Portugal — the national statistics body — the revenue from tourist accommodation alone was EUR 2.7 billion in 2017. The year saw Portugal’s “hotels and similar establishments [host] 19.8 million guests” with a “recorded 55.7 million overnight stays”. This represents an increase of 10.1% and 8.4%, respectively.

With a nearly 20% growth in rural tourists, and Portugal’s national tourism body pushing for even more, where are all these people staying? Currently, not at glamping sites. Portugal is, somewhat

More importantly, 2017 saw an increase of 18.8% in the number of “rural tourists” compared with 2016. This sector of the tourism market is garnering more attention, with Turismo de Portugal’s most recent campaign, Can’t Skip Portugal, having a clear focus on rural destinations. Additionally, part of the 2027 Tourism Strategy involves the “development of tourism... in rural

surprisingly, still a relatively untapped market when it comes to glamping. In fact, there are only 230 campsites in the entire country, according to the latest reports, with popular online directories listing fewer than 180 glamping sites — including buildings — in the whole of Portugal. Compare this with the same directories listing more than 420 sites in the UK, and it is easy to see how much room Portugal's glamping sector has to grow. And, the sector is growing. Talking to one glamping site owner, Suzana from Munda

Portugal

Ecoturismo, she said that in the last few years there “are more people curious about glamping” both in Portugal, and further afield. Now, the “glamping concept is fashionable… because they talk about [it] in lifestyle magazines and television programmes.” While the sector seems to be growing, it is doing so in an unusual way. Unlike many other European countries, glamping sites in Portugal are very rarely exclusively for glamping. It is more common for these businesses to focus on activities such as surfing, yoga, meditation or permaculture, and use glamping as a means of cheap accommodation. One such example is Dream Sea Surf Camp, based just off of Praia da Galé in midwest Portugal. As the name would suggest, the core of this business is surfing, and surf-related activities — including external trips and summercamp style group activities. For this company, glamping is simply accommodation, rather than a destination in itself. Opening only for the summer season, the glamping accommodation is pitched more like a moveable hostel, with their “bell tents [being] shared with two or three people depending on the size”. However, they do integrate many of the expected elements of glamping such as chic furnishings and Instagramable lighting. Similarly, there is Tipi Valley Surf & Yoga Retreat, based in Western Algarve of Southern Portugal. They don’t rent out their accommodation except for as part of a 5 or 7-day “retreat”, which includes daily surf lessons. Having a number of self-described “simple tipis” situated in a natural valley, this would surely be the perfect glampsite. But again, it is used as cheaper accommodation for people involved in the retreat. Glamping matches the aesthetics and ethos of these businesses, but it is still a secondary concern, providing cheap, quirky accommodation to people visiting for other reasons. This is common across Portugal, but with growing interest in glamping in its own right, we may see more glamping-exclusive sites in the near future.

Campers, has made it mobile and is now Europe’s largest campervan rental company. Founded with three vans, by two friends, just five years ago, these glamping-units-on-wheels have now spread to locations across Europe with a fleet of more than 350 vehicles. They offer the rental of several different types of converted van, along with add-ons such as kayaks, surfboards and even WIFI. They have truly taken the idea of luxury camping and made it mobile, creating unique non-traditional accommodation based out of Lisbon. Indie Campers describe themselves as “children of the sun, aching for the sea, with our feet dirty and a pocketful of sunshine”, which certainly embodies the glamping ethos.

Other sites have a greater focus on glamping, but still tend to have aims beyond providing high-end accommodation. One such business is Munda Ecoturismo, a site based near Evoramonte, close to Serra de Ossa. They state that their business is “inspired by permaculture… using organic materials, local products and reusing materials”, which in turn creates a “sustainable experience” for visitors. The site consists of several Mongolian yurts, made from “organic materials”, spread around their land for greater privacy. Each has a kitchen, bath/shower and a compost toilet and are designed to accommodate couples or families with up to two children.

this seems to be much less of a draw than in the UK. Furthermore, there seems to be a lot less variation, with most sites that take the top spots on “best glamping in Portugal” lists consisting of bell tents and yurts, rather than the eclectic mix of accommodation offered in other countries. You don’t see the plane fuselages, double-deckers, and shepherd huts that scatter the UK.

Overall, the current glamping sector in Portugal seems to rely on other services as the core of their business, with high-end tents being used as a useful form of accommodation. What is most unique about Portugal is that there isn’t more glamping. With growing tourism — specifically rural tourism — and exceptionally good weather, one would expect far more than there is. Perhaps this is something we will see in the near future.

However, there are some breakaway projects that are unique in the European glamping scene. While “glamping” can conjure images of bell tents and wooden huts, one company in Portugal, Indie

Check out the mentioned sites here: www.munda-ecoturismo.com www.dreamseasurfcamp.com www.indiecampers.com http://www.turismodeportugal.pt

This setup is much closer to what you may expect to find in the UK, as their focus is not on activities. However, there is still certainly an alternative narrative, with much of the focus on environment. Far from the glamour some may expect, Suzana, the owner, says of her site: “Yes, it is a beautiful place, but it is also a place with bugs, with snakes in the swimming pool, [which is] very hot in the summertime and with compost toilets. The whole package is not for everyone!” This is possibly telling of the direction that glamping will take in Portugal as people become more environmentally aware. Of course, there are numerous sites that offer more “traditional” glamping, but

Jag wanted to design a new active wing system for a car, taking aerospace experience and bringing it to the automotive industry. He shared his patent pending technology to Jaguar Landrover who purchased it on first viewing for the next generation of sports cars. In terms of “User Centred Design” – he says – “aerospace and automotive engineers have learnt how to integrate engineering excellence into understanding what the customer wants and I’m trying to bring this philosophy to construction.”

Jag Virdie Conker Living

Jag believes in today’s world, with our increased awareness of natural resources depleting, he needed to take a fresh look at the way we live our lives. Revisiting first principles and borrowing from the great engineers of our past inspired his unique design for The Conker, which makes perfect sense. It can be erected in just one day and built to operate completely off the grid, via solar panels, mini HEP stations near running water and wind power to cover all eventualities. It has taken Jag two-and-a-half years to design and build the first prototype to fully understand the advantages and implications of a production solution. All components are designed and manufactured in the UK before being assembled in Chelford, Cheshire. Jag truly believes that for all the above reasons The Conker is an ideal choice for the new wave glamping market as it will extend the season to a full year without it costing the earth!

Existing B&B offering to New Heights

Yvonne Halling ran “Les Molyneux”, a B&B in the heart of the Champagne region of France for 17 years. Originally from England she has lived in the USA, Japan and for more than 20 years, in France. She opened her B&B in 2000 to have something to do while her husband was travelling with his job and Yvonne Halling while taking care of their two small daughters. It was essentially a “hobby” business, making around €10,000 a year, but in 2009 everything changed. Her husband had lost his job, and the B&B had now become their sole source of income. Now deeply in debt with creditors and the bailiffs literally knocking on the door, she had to act fast. She quickly began studying business and internet marketing and applied her new-found knowledge to her B&B business and sales took off. In the following year she more than quadrupled her past revenue and in the year after that she doubled it again into 6 figures. She won 3 Certificates of Excellence from Trip Advisor and was the 2013 winner of Infusionsoft’s “Ultimate Marketer Contest – Best in Class Customer Satisfaction” – a coveted online marketing award. Yvonne now coaches, mentors and consults with other B&Bs, guest houses, inns and small hotels worldwide who want to dramatically increase their revenue and build a professional and profitable business fast.

Bob Hill, Sites Director The Camping and Caravanning Club

The Club has over 100 campsites set in some of the most picturesque locations, nearby to leading tourist destinations, across the UK. In 2015, its own glamping product ‘Ready Camp’ was launched, which now boasts 250 units across 45 locations nationwide. Bob also works actively within the wider tourism and visitor economy, and is currently leading an industry-wide research group to assess the economic impact of the holiday park sector in the UK.

She is the creator of “Bed and Breakfast Business Transformation”, the only online coaching and mentoring program, where clients typically add between 20% and 67% to their business revenue in one season (while experiencing unusual outbursts of joy!), and the author of “Bed and Breakfast Magic! How to Transform your B&B into a Booming Six Figure Business” available on Amazon.

Kate Morel

What Kate Did Next... Our columnist Kate Morel reveals to Steph Curtis-Raleigh details of her seminars, her workshops and her new venture at this year’s Glamping Show What can we expect from Kate Morel this show? Firstly, this year I’ll have an exhibition space (number 83 I believe) so if anyone wants to catch up with me, I’ll be easier to find. I’ll also be accompanied by some rather special people, but more about this further on.

Will you be running your usual workshops? Absolutely, having run personal development workshops in the past, it’s only natural to apply them to what I do in glamping. This year’s workshop is on Friday 9.30am, where we’ll focus on subjects unique to setting-up glamping finance, planning permissions, structure choices, revenues, and developing a unique selling point.

Will you be speaking and if so - what about? My seminar is on Thursday 1.30pm,

72

www.glampingbusiness.com

where I’ll be revisiting the subject of money and drilling down on revenues and rental fees, I hope it will be helpful for those new to hospitality. The other seminar is my Experts Q&A Panel on Saturday at 10.30am, which includes a planning consultant, marketing consultant, rural tourism PR Practitioner, and an experienced glamping site owner sharing her experience and advice.

We hear you have a new venture - can you tell us about it? I do indeed, and I’m genuinely excited about it! In one way, it’s taken years to come about, yet in another it’s all happened quite quickly. I’ve always been passionate about rural life and fascinated by unusual builds, so when glamping came along I felt right at home. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot and collected an address book of diversely talented people. Both are often commented on which slowly percolated into an idea – why

don’t I do something with all this…. what if I pulled together a glamping ‘A Team’? I made some phone calls to run the idea by a few people, asking if they’d be interested in an official collaboration of some sort, and to my surprise every single one of them, said yes. The outcome is a collective of experienced and skilled designers, consultants, and accommodation builders, who can either support at specific points in a project, or take it from a bare field to fluffing pillows on the guests’ beds. Finance and planning permissions are crucial to most projects, and we have both, but all projects need accommodation structures - and we have the most beautiful structures. The new venture is called ‘Morel & Co’, inspired by Arts & Crafts founder and designer, William Morris and his company ‘Morris & Co’. They produced beautiful things through a collective of traditional craftsmen, in an era when mass

Kate Morel

production was just taking hold. Whilst we have no illusions of being in the same ball-park as William Morris (if only), those combined values of aesthetics with ethics, inspire and echo our little collective of professionals and craftsmen.

What kind of people will you be working with? The kind of people that know their stuff, and at the risk of sounding old fashioned, are nice to work with. Everyone involved was included because of their experience, approach, and enthusiasm for their work, and if they design – because of their exceptional creativity. Some will be joining me at the show on certain days, so if anyone wants to have a specific conversation, keep an eye on my social media, or drop me an email. When it comes to the guys who create the structures, their styles might differ, but they are united in their incredible talent and passion for their work, I can’t begin to tell you how inspired I am by each and every one of them. I’ll let the photographs say the rest. It’s also worth mentioning that each team member will have a Morel & Co certificate of endorsement to display, which says these people and their work are what we consider to be outstanding in their field, so look out for it.

What is unique about Morel & Co.? I believe the business model itself, in the glamping industry at least, is quite different to anything else. On a practical level, collectively, we have a wealth of knowledge, experience and skills, and having a choice of structures and bespoke options gives us incredible versatility. This isn’t just about unique selling points or

saving time either, there are several advantages to having industry knowledge, planning expertise and design ability all under one roof. I’m not sure this is unique, but it is defining, there’s already a strong sustainable and design element to the structures, but we also want the spaces to be creative, with permaculture landscaping that includes interactive features.

Will you take on clients from outside of the UK? I hope so because I’ve just renewed my passport! I’ve already worked with clients in several countries so it’s only natural to translate Morel & Co’s approach to other countries by working with local expertise. Anyone who wants to talk about working with us is welcome to get in touch (although I will add that funding, if required, is an issue in some places).

What makes The Glamping Show so special in your opinion? I remember my initial conversation with Peter, Nina and Dan when it was just an idea, so it’s been rewarding to have played a part in its development and see it grow. It’s also our only dedicated event so many of us look forward to catching-up over a drink, and this year we’re launching Morel & Co there, so there’ll be some celebrating too - maybe I should apologise in advance for any ‘happenings’ in the bar…

As a leading business advisor in the hospitality industry, Kate gives seminars at recognised trade events, writes columns for reputable B2B publications, and runs glamping business workshops. She is also a committee member of The Glamping Association, working to support and develop this growing sector. Her main focus and passion, however, is helping landowners create glamping businesses that don’t follow the herd. Informed, honest and impartial advice remain the cornerstones of Kate’s work, and cover any and every stage of set-up. Subjects such as finances, site suitability, planning applications (and alternatives), funding, choosing accommodation structures, marketing - and that all important ‘unique selling point’. It’s no secret that she’s always happy to talk about glamping, so get in touch today for a free, no obligation chat. Phone 07849 514588 Email info@katemorel.com www.katemorel.com Facebook Support Group: ‘Glamping Business Link’. columns. I’m hoping to get back to Australia and one of the American Summits, time and projects permitting. I absolutely love this industry, as you know Steph there’s never a dull moment!

What are your plans for the next 12 months? The year ahead is both exciting and challenging. I’m running workshops for several tourism organisations, have existing projects to complete and new ones coming on board. Morel & Co will be exhibiting at industry exhibitions, and of course, I’ll continue writing my magazine

The Buzzardry The demand for high-end, luxury treehouse holidays is booming as guests search for amazing places to stay for anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions. This luxurious Blue Forest construction ticks all the boxes and has almost everything you would expect from a luxury escape. The intricacy of its construction makes The Buzzardry a real visual masterpiece, which goes a long way to making it feel that bit more special. Set in 13-acres of woodland grounds, filled with lakes and meandering paths, the whole place has a delightful atmosphere. Its proximity to London, in a highly sought-after Sussex location, naturally increases its demand. Added extras such as a tennis court and beautiful Japanese style footbridge only serve to enhance the whole experience. Outside, the large sweeping balcony creates a space for guests to fully appreciate the treetop setting. Inside, the property offers a variety of luxury facilities including underfloor heating, wood burning stove, Wi-Fi and fully functional kitchen. The copper bath in the bedroom, stylish furnishings and a spiral staircase all combine to make The Buzzardy an elegant escape, which meets the increasingly high expectations of the market.
