UNLOCK SUSTAINABILITY WITH GREEN KEY Glamping has a naturally green image and appeals to those wanting to connect with nature. Working with Green Key can help your business to get under the skin of what it really means to be eco-friendly and shout about it to your guests. Green Key is a leading international eco-label for tourism businesses, which provides a framework for sustainability that businesses can use as a standard to work towards. The award welcomes applications from glamping sites, in addition to campsites, holiday parks, hotels, B&Bs, visitor attractions, restaurants and conference centres. There are currently over 3,000 establishments awarded Green Key across 65 countries, from holiday park operators such as Landal GreenParks, to independent sites such as Larkhill Tipis & Yurts (pictured) in Wales. The Green Key application consists of 130 criteria across 13 categories, from energy and water use, to waste, environmental management, green areas, staff involvement and guest information. Almost half of these are imperative criteria and have to be completed in order to achieve the certification, the other half are guideline and an increasing number should be met year on year. The first step towards achieving Green Key for your business is to conduct an

environmental review, using the criteria which are available on the Green Key website: www.greenkey.global Understanding the environmental footprint of business operations and monitoring resource use is a crucial starting point. A plan can then be developed to reduce the negative impact of operations and where possible make a positive impact on the local environment, for example through planting and managing land for biodiversity. Procurement is an important element to review, as supply chains contribute significantly to the carbon footprint of a business. Green Key stipulates that paper products such as toilet paper, hand towels, printing paper and brochures, should all be eco-labelled, or made from recycled paper, or produced by a company with an environmental management system. A minimum of three food and beverage products sold on site should be ecolabelled, for example Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance or organic, or alternatively locally-produced. Your glamping site could work with local suppliers of dairy, meat, fish, fruit and vegetables to stock the shop, café or restaurant with produce that can itself become a unique selling point. Disposable items such as cups and cutlery should be avoided where possible, but if necessary should be

biodegradable. Bins on site should be well labelled with pictures and words clearly explaining which items go in which recycling bins to reduce contamination. Cleaning products should have a recognised eco-label and fibre cloths can be used to reduce the need for chemicals and water in cleaning. Even with thorough cleaning regimes in place to protect guests against coronavirus, the environment should be considered and items such as disposable wipes can be avoided. Through making greener choices each establishment is able to significantly reduce their environmental impact, reducing the consumption of energy and water and improve their guests’ experience. A Green Key stands for an establishment’s promise to its guests that by opting to stay with them, they are helping to make a difference in regards to sustainability. The high environmental standards expected of these establishments are maintained through rigorous documentation and frequent audits. The criteria are stipulated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), who manage the programme internationally, and the hotel criteria are recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. PRODUCTNEWS features. It’s been fantastic to see the way it has helped businesses in such a tough climate.” Offering online bookings has become standard practice for the glamping industry in recent years, with the proliferation of online booking websites, such as Airbnb, Cool Camping and Booking.com, contributing to the consumer shift away from telephone and email exchanges.

RECORD NUMBER OF GLAMPING BUSINESSES MOVE BOOKINGS ONLINE, BEDFUL REPORTS A record number of businesses invested in online booking systems this summer, Bedful has reported. The leading booking system provider saw the number of new users to its system almost double in the second quarter compared with the same period last year, a trend that continued in July and August. The increase has been partly put down to the industry-wide effects of Covid19, with more businesses looking to operate contactless check-in – automating security deposits and

balance payments – and reduce cash transactions. An unusually high volume of new businesses, including wedding venues and festival providers opening temporary sites, also contributed to the increase. “Every industry has become more digital this year,” Lucy Clinch from Bedful commented, “and the world of glamping is no different. At Bedful, we’ve been quick to provide powerful new functions that have helped businesses in a challenging period, from easy rebooking tools to enhanced diary functions and automated payment

“Taking bookings online is now the norm for most glamping sites,” Clinch continued. “With the majority of bookings made late in the evenings, an online system helps give you a 24-hour sales presence but, nowadays, it also plays a much wider role in reducing admin and improving the efficiency of a business. Most leading booking systems will automate tonnes of tasks for you and provide easy data tools for managing your site. By integrating with third-party websites, like Cool Camping, Glampingly and Airbnb, it can also ensure you never get double booked when marketing elsewhere.” The use of online booking software is expected to continue to rise as holiday planning becomes increasingly digitalised. “From exploring Instagram to reading travel articles, today’s glamping audience is researching and booking holidays online,” Clinch concluded. “So it’s important for glamping sites to have a user-friendly online presence too.”

PRODUCTNEWS WINTER READY Rinnai is gearing all its operations, products and services to meet and exceed the temperature accurate hot water delivery needs of all healthcare, foodservice, commercial and industrial sectors as planning starts for the coming winter. The company is now positioned as a leading authority on the design and supply of hot water systems.

Hot water temperature precision and control are now being stated as major factors in the design, specification, and installation of any hot water delivery system. Reports have emerged from specific industries and sectors, such as laundry for healthcare and care homes, that the temperature of the hot water is critical to the cleaning and disinfecting process to render the possibility of transmitting the virus as near to zero as possible.

‘We all need ready access to continuous supplies of safe, useable hot water and soap to ensure clean and sterile indoor environments throughout our daily lives to minimise any infection. This is paramount,’ says Rinnai Operations Director Chris Goggin.

Rinnai has responded to the present conditions with a range of new products and initiatives which allow end-users virtually instant access to the supply of continuous flow hot water heating units and systems.

‘We must closely consider the design of the provision of hot water services which incorporate heat engines to provide limitless volumes of hot water AND provide that hot water at the precise temperature needed,’ adds Chris Goggin.

Provided there is a constant supply of gas and water, all Rinnai units are guaranteed to supply temperature accurate hot water in unlimited quantities for all hygiene regimes in all types of sites for healthcare, care homes, food handling & production, industrial production, food handling,

industrial laundry, mobile hygiene units or temporary accommodation. The Rinnai range of units is available within 24 hours, provided the order is received before mid-day of the previous day. Rinnai UK has fully maintained its total service throughout the Covid-19 situation and the company has kept high stock levels of all units plus spares and accessories. Rinnai is the world’s leading manufacturer of continuous flow hot water systems - it makes and sells 2 million units each year. The range of units can be manifolded to supply, limitless hot water to a school site of any size. This means fast, efficient, temperature-controlled water on demand at the point of delivery – kitchens, showers, accommodation blocks, bathrooms, washrooms. It also means far less space spent on plant rooms and no or little maintenance as all units are proven to be robust with a long, long working life. DELIVERING POWER FOR GLAMPING AND CAMPING battery banks that will work with 12V and 240V AC equipment but for longerlasting camping power, you need a leisure battery that can be cycled, discharged and recharged, so lead acid and lithium batteries lead the way.

The deployment of an effective power system means that visitors to even the most remote glamping, camping and accommodation locations can get off-grid access to amenities such as lighting, heating, cooking, fridges and even washing machines! Choosing the right battery to supply your power can help you to get the most out of your travels. You can buy high-powered

PRODUCTNEWS CARN KITCHEN Cooking food, entertaining guests and getting warm by an outdoor fire is a new normal. The world of Glamping is embracing this lifestyle and there has never been a better time to look at safe and practical ways of facilitating this. The Carn Kitchen is a new product in development for the Glamping market. Visually striking, highly practical and modular by design, these can create an entire outdoor space in one easy installation. Sam Barlow explained how the product is evolving; ‘As a designer/blacksmith based in the North of Scotland I have made many bespoke architectural pieces and I like the structural and aesthetic qualities of steel pipework. The cantilevered oven gives the piece a unique look, and I wanted a chimney tall enough to disperse smoke above head height. Of course the whole structure

also had to be stable and safe, yet easy to install. Creating a strong and elegant base structure was the challenge. When the base became the floor, it opened up the possibility of bolting on other components such as seating, table, lamp post etc. Thus creating a modular outdoor space.’

then be adapted by simply bolting on new components or changing them around.

Using industrial pipe connections, the components can be assembled in different ways depending on the specifics of the site and client requirements. The initial groundwork is simply a shallow excavation with a power supply if required. After the base is installed, paving, decking or turf can be re-instated and the unit is ready to be assembled. Once bolted together it is completely resistant to knocking over or nuisance theft, and effectively creates a permanent structure and outdoor space. This can

The Carn kitchen has a strong, contemporary aesthetic, creating a striking composition of cantilevered shapes, yet the features are highly practical and user friendly. The oven cooks well, giving succulent flavours as oven or grill. After the food has been prepared the fire can be built up to radiate heat and create atmosphere while enjoying the comfortable seat. PRODUCTNEWS FRIAR BEST INSURANCE SERVICES LIMITED With everyone having to live with the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic for the foreseeable future and adapt to the new “normal” way of life, understandably many of us have fears of foreign travel and with rapid changes occurring to UK quarantine laws, more of us are opting for the “staycation”. A positive result from this is evidence of the much-needed boost to the glamping industry providing the safer environment for having that much needed break and reconnect with life almost as it was. Due to the fluid nature of change it has been, and will remain, necessary for the glamping industry to adapt as quickly as reasonably possible to take advantage of change to maximise business opportunities by providing as many self-contained glamping units as possible to enable a site’s full capacity for guests.

NORTHWOOD CONTEMPORARY CABINS Northwood Contemporary Cabins is a new company with a wealth of knowledge. They have over 20 years’ experience working in the luxury holiday home industry and 10 years working with international investments. Northwoods ethos of investments, either financial or lifestyle starts with working alongside some of the prettiest parks in the Great Britain. Northwood then provide the very best in luxury holiday accommodation, built to their exacting standards to BS3632 standards, all built with modern construction methods and lovingly finished by hand. Northwood offer a partnering option to selected park, campsite or landowners. They have an extensive database of prospective investors looking to enter the booming leisure and tourism market.

This is a simple process; you the landowner provide the infrastructure for 5 units. Northwood adds your development to their portfolio and seeks investment for the cabins. You sign an agreement allowing Northwood the use of one base for a period of 5 years, during which time we take the rental revenue and pay you any costs incurred for utilities and cleaning, we then supply the units for you at a cost price. Each investor gets a return from the holiday letting revenue, this will typically be 9 to 12.5%. As the park owner you receive the balance of the holiday income. Typically, a 5-unit development will generate 100 – 140k per annum. And the best part, Northwood structure the partnering program so you own all the units outright at the end of year 5.

They can even work on bespoke designs with you to make sure your glamping unit is exactly what you’re looking for. Northwood will even add your park to their booking and management platform to take another expense & hassle from you.

REMEMBER WOODLAND WHEN CONDUCTING SITE MAINTENANCE The setting and landscape of a holiday park or glamping site often provides the frame for a picture-postcard holiday. Keeping on top of the site’s surroundings will provide great aesthetic benefits, but woodland maintenance shouldn’t be forgotten on the list of landscaping tasks, explains Martin Lucas of British-manufactured woodchippers, GreenMech Ltd. The benefits of a striking firstimpression continue to be a key driver behind keeping on top of site maintenance. The look and feel of a site should be fitting within its surroundings - a dense tree belt for example may be fitting for a countryside venue, but less so in an open landscape. Trees present a fantastic way to integrate or soften the appearance of ancillary buildings and other site facilities but also have the functional benefit of creating boundaries, shelter and screening between public and private areas. However, while most park owners will keep on top of soft landscaping, such as maintaining flowerbeds and mowing regularly to keep them aesthetically pleasing, maintaining trees, hedges and shrubs can slip down the task list. Treatment of these areas can enhance more than just visual appeal.

Key woodland management tasks could include, but aren’t limited to: n Regular examination of tree roots and overhanging branches as these can quickly cause problems overhead or underground, as well as pose health and safety risks to guests. n Removing density in the upper and lower canopies to promote better flow of air and light to site which, in turn, will optimise the health of any turf. n Pruning and thinning of brash n Disposing of any dead, damaged or diseased wood or brash The Environmental Protection Act, along with the Clean Air Act, considers the burning of waste as inappropriate. Anyone found improperly disposing of waste risks being prosecuted by The Environment Agency, Local Council or Police – with a typical fine likely to be in the region of £2000. This amount would go a long way towards the cost of hiring or even buying the equipment necessary to deal with woody waste. GreenMech have a woodchipper portfolio that spans 20 models of various sizes and chipping capacities, with a pedestrian range built with the professional landscaper and parks manager in mind. Chippers such as

the CS80 and CS100 are idea for jobs in small spaces, such as those around building perimeters or between caravans. With working widths of just 760mm, they are small, yet mighty, workhorses - powered by either a 12hp, 16hp or 18hp petrol engine. Their wide, open design in-feed chute enable large volumes of bushy material or timber of up to 100mm to be processed. This impressive chipping ability is provided by two high grade steel, long-life reversible blades that are easily re-sharpened thus ensuring low running costs. Chipping is a fantastic way to quickly and easily remove unwanted material. The chip that is produced can then be used in other beneficial ways - as a weed suppressant on pathways and in flowers beds or scattered around trees to help with moisture retention in the summer months.

QORONE Stand number: OSA630 qorone.structures@gmail.com +44 (0) 7798 902209 Qorone offers a real alternative to other forms of accommodation and structures. Handmade in Somerset, the structures have an attractive look that will compliment any surroundings. The design of the Qorone has evolved organically, starting with the fireplace at the centre. Its roots lie in building a ring of benches around a fire. By making the backs of the benches into walls and adding a flue to the fire bowl, it was then possible to build a roof from the walls to the flue. From this evolved the unique roof structure that is the signature feature of the Qorone.

LIVE GLAMPING DEBATES Steph Curtis-Raleigh, publisher of International Glamping Business, will be hosting three live panels during The Glamping Show that will offer a really valuable opportunity for those operating or planning to operate a glamping site. Thursday 17th September, 4pm Do you have to own your own land? Or is there another way? On Thursday there will be a discussion on whether land ownership is the necessary starting point for a glamping business. It’s often hard for people to find the right land and afford to buy it - particularly in the UK. However, it’s not always necessary - as there are other ways to get started. When Kerry Roy started her glamping business Camp Katur in Yorkshire nearly a decade ago - she approached a local landowner with a business plan and glamping has now become a valuable asset for his estate. She has now taken the opportunity to buy land in Italy and has started a new site called Cerchio Del Desiderio in Abruzzo. Kerry can therefore give an honest appraisal of renting and owning land and running a glamping business. Josh Crick of Brown & Co. a leading provider of consultancy services across the whole range of rural, commercial and residential property, agriculture and the environment will also join. Josh is actively looking for glamping operators to set up business on his clients’ land as increasing numbers of landowners recognise the

Friday 18th September, 4pm How to sell your glamping business. Do you have an exit strategy? On Friday, the discussion will focus on buying and selling glamping sites. When you set up a glamping or any kind of business, it’s essential to consider your ‘exit strategy’. However, when you live on site and own the land - the situation can be complicated, and some estate agents can’t comprehend how to market an ongoing business. In the same way, if you are looking to buy an existing business - what should you be looking for? For this live panel, Steph will be joined by Richard Moss: Head of UK Parks Agency | Parks Sports and Marinas, Alternative

Sat 19th September 4pm The UK Glamping Industry The Size and Scope of the Market Earlier this year, International Glamping Business published a report that finally put a size on the UK glamping market in collaboration with Edward Busby of Crown & Canopy and his team. Steph Curtis-Raleigh and Edward discuss the findings, the opportunities and what new areas of research they would like to conduct which could benefit those operating or selling into the sector. Tune in for: insight into which regions of the UK have most glamping sites/What kinds of accommodation are most popular.
