Holiday Parks M a n a ge m e n t Welcome To The Aug / Sept Issue Of Holiday Parks Management I couldn’t be more excited to introduce this latest issue of the magazine which you will see is combined with the Exhibition Guide for a brand new event called “The Glamping Show”. Through the pages of Holiday Parks Management I have been in touch with the glamping industry from it’s earliest days. Back then, a few brave souls were pioneering what has become one of the most dynamic and vibrant sectors of the holiday accommodation market and we could not be more proud to be the official supporter of this new show. Dedicated to all things glamping the event will bring together manufacturers and suppliers of structures and products never seen together in one place and many of which have never been seen in the UK before. In addition there is a packed seminar programme with leaders from across the industry giving in depth sessions on every topic needed to launch a new glamping business or give ideas and inspiration for those already operating. Of course Holiday Parks Management is also a complete issue with features, articles and news and both issues will be distributed together at the show as well as online and via the usual channels. I hope you enjoy the magazine and if you have not already planned a visit to the Glamping Show then don’t miss out. Come down and see us, we will be at the show for the whole three days.

Wyldecrest Parks wants to promote business to British expats One of the largest mobile park home operators in the UK is already planning its overseas expansion. Wyldecrest Parks, which is the only nationwide park home operator in the country with 43 residential and holiday mobile home sites spread across 22 counties in England, Scotland and Wales, has plans to further grow and the Iberian Peninsula is in its sight. “A corporate development through overseas investments is part of a strategy to move our business forward,” says the company’s Chairman. However, Alfie Best (pictured) points out that he would like to start it by bringing even more Wyldecrest Parks to the attention of the British people living abroad. “You always have to keep your eyes open to market opportunities and I personally spend most of my time in our parks across the country and work very close with all our departments,” reminds Alfie Best. That’s how he has noticed an increase of contacts coming from British people living overseas. “The number of enquiries we’ve been receiving from British expats has been exponentially increasing over the last few years. Some of them are interested in a residential mobile home, which is an affordable way for them to come back to the UK; others just want a holiday home, to have a UK base to spend time with family and friends whenever they want to,” explains the Chairman. Therefore, to open and improve the “lines of communication” from the UK to the rest of the world is, at the moment, a priority to this Essex-based company, which is about to start a Marketing and PR campaign abroad. And, according to Alfie Best, Portugal and Spain are at the top of the list due to the number of expats living there and the territorial proximity from the UK.

Perennial Legacy Garden is Best in Show
© Pathfinder
The Perennial Legacy Garden has been awarded a Gold Medal and named Best Show Garden at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park. Perennial, the charity dedicated to helping horticulturists in need, has created the garden to mark the launch of its new legacy fundraising campaign. Designed by Paul Hervey-Brookes, the garden reflects elements of an English country estate, inspired by Perennial’s heritage as an organisation born from the great country estates of Britain. The RHS judges were wowed by the garden’s long herbaceous borders vibrantly planted with a rich palette of traditional and contemporary perennials. The design also includes a traditional pavilion for enjoying the garden, while the gardener’s bothy and nursery beds represent the gardener’s domain. Supported by Glendale as lead sponsor, the garden has been a real team effort thanks to the help and support of a wide range of industry partners including Rolawn, Travis Perkins, Readyhedge, Bulldog Tools (Rollins Group Ltd), Wotmix cement, Bradstone and Haddonstone, as well as contractor GK Wilson Landscapes who built the garden.
When it comes to mould - Wet and Forget Due to the British climate, moss, mould, lichen, algae, and black mould are often problems encountered in our homes and of course in holiday parks. Because of our climate these biological growths attach themselves, uninvited, to every exterior surface. These growths are seriously unattractive and potentially dangerous (slippery pavers and concrete). In addition, these growths can damage paintwork, masonry, bricks, roof tiles and outdoor furniture. Waterblasting has been a common method of removing grime and growth but it is very aggressive and abrasive. It can lift paint, scour timber and lift the fine sand and cement out of concrete. Plus it does not kill the growth - so even as you are waterblasting, the growth spore is busily re-establishing itself. A great new solution is called Wet & Forget, simply wet any exterior surface with the product... then forget it! The weather does the work. Wet & Forget is non caustic, non acidic and contains no bleach! It has a pH of 8. Tap water is 7! Then there are aggressive chemicals like bleach, caustic soda and acid based products which have the same effect as waterblasting. For more details visit http://www.wetandforget.co.uk/

Move customers onto your site before the end of the year, with Stock Support from Quick Move Properties Quick Move Properties, one of the UK’s leading part exchange companies, is helping residential and leisure park operators to complete sales, and get customers moved onto site before the end of the year, with its new Stock Support service. The service, which is available to any residential or leisure park operators who use Quick Move Properties’ part exchange service, offers a range of new units from manufacturers such as Prestige, Homeseeker, Omar, Wessex, Tingdene and Pathfinder that are ready to be sited throughout the year, without the usually lengthy lead times associated with ordering a park or leisure home. Quick Move Properties’ Sales Director, Patrick Chambers, explains: “There are a lot of potential customers out there who want to move on park before the end of this year, but long lead times with park and leisure home manufacturers mean that many are unable to fulfil new orders until well into the new year. “Thanks to our new Stock Support service, we have park homes and lodges from Prestige, Homeseeker, Omar, Wessex, Tingdene and Pathfinder that are all available to site on your park before the end of this year. What’s more, units can still be tailored to customer specification and requirements with 12 weeks’ notice. “Or, if you have a customer lined up and ready to go, we also have a limited number of homes available for immediate delivery to site, that all come with a showroom standard furnishing pack.” If you have a customer looking to part exchange their existing property, who is keen to move onto site in the coming months, Quick Move Properties is able to handle the part exchange and release a home or lodge at cost price. Alternatively, Stock Support can be used to assist cash customers for a modest arrangement fee, which will be dependent on lead-time and the home model selected. To find out more about how Stock Support can help you secure customers before the end of 2015, call Quick Move Properties’ friendly team on 01793 840917.

Be Aware of the Silent Killer Too many families are still unaware of the carbon monoxide poisoning risks involved with placing lit or smouldering barbecues inside tents, awnings or caravans. Even at home, a barbecue used in a sheltered or confined area can pose a danger from the “silent killer” carbon monoxide; that’s according to timely advice from the Building & Engineering Services Association (B&ES). B&ES spokesman Mark Oakes, comments, “Camping and caravanning has never been so popular, especially with more and more British families opting for ‘staycations’. But they do need to be aware that carbon monoxide can build up very quickly in enclosed spaces, such as tents and awnings, to levels that can kill. And with the sudden chill of evening they might be tempted to use the still burning coals of a BBQ for warmth. But this could prove fatal; BBQs should never be used or left inside tents or awnings once they have been lit. Even at home there can be a danger, for example taking a BBQ inside a garage or carport if it starts to rain. “Carbon monoxide is the most common cause of fatal poisoning in the UK, with 40 people each year being killed by it and thousands more taken ill. Although most incidents still occur in the home, there is a risk from exposure in holiday

accommodation, caravans, motor homes, tents and boats as these often use fuel burning appliances in what can be a poorly ventilated area. To stay safe this summer follow our top five tips when you’re using a BBQ: I Never take a smouldering or lit BBQ into a tent, caravan or cabin. I Keep BBQs away from sheds, fences, trees, shrubs, garden waste, tents or caravan awnings as they pose a fire risk. I Never use a BBQ inside to keep you warm and never leave a lit BBQ unattended or while sleeping. I Always ensure there is an adequate supply of fresh air in the area where the BBQ is being used. I Always take a portable, battery operated CO alarm away with you on holiday – they can be purchased for as little as £15. David Bellamy set to celebrate community-minded parks Hundreds of holiday and residential parks that reach out to their local communities will be put under the spotlight in this year's David Bellamy Conservation Awards. With assessments for the 2015 accolade winners now coming in, scheme organiser Rufus Bellamy says he is keen to celebrate parks acting as "good neighbours". Early feedback from assessors, he reports, suggests that a number of initiatives are now making a very real difference to many peoples' lives around the country. They range from parks opening up their grounds for school nature projects and wildlife discovery walks to those organising litter-picking projects and beach clean-up operations. Other examples include parks becoming involved with local sports and arts organisations, and even hosting live theatre and musical performances in their grounds. There are also award-winning parks extending life-line to their local community by having a defibrillator sited on their site with staff specially trained in its use. But where parks especially excel, says Rufus, is in charity fundraising which provides a massive boost to many good causes, often locally-based, throughout the UK. Here, comments Rufus, parks have proven themselves to be particularly enterprising with business owners and staff taking part in a host of different sponsored events. These range from bike rides and marathons to taking on a tough Royal Marine assault course, braving Europe's longest zip-wire, and driving an old banger across Europe. The names of the 500-plus parks expected to receive David Bellamy Conservation Awards this year at gold, silver and bronze levels will be announced in September.
Dirty work! Beverley Holidays’ pair raise money good cause Two senior managers from South Devon's Beverley Holidays recently got down and dirty in a very good cause when they took on the punishing Royal Marines 10K Commando Challenge, raising almost £700.00 for Devon Air Ambulance. The two toughies were Nicola Furneaux, manager of Beverley Holidays (right), and Katy Lamsin, manager of its sister site Whitehill Country Park. Both parks are winners of the David Bellamy Conservation Award.
MGM is new Pellenc dealer for the West Midlands Etesia UK, the exclusive distributor of Pellenc battery-powered equipment in the UK, has announced Midlands Groundscare Machinery (MGM) as the new Pellenc dealer for the West Midlands area. MGM, a new independent groundscare company based in Solihull, was formed by the experienced Dave Tullett who has worked within the groundscare industry for over 27 years. A fully qualified BAGMA instructor and assessor and experienced agricultural engineer, Dave is keen to use his knowledge and expertise to provide trustworthy, professional advice and support when sourcing new equipment or providing high quality servicing and maintenance. It is safe to say that Dave understands the market extremely well and knows what brands of machinery his customers will want to see at his Depot in Knowle. The addition of the Pellenc range of equipment, including battery powered chainsaws, hedge trimmers and brushcutters, will present MGM’s customers with a lighter, odourless, noise-free and more cost effective alternative to fuel based machinery. Dave is further embracing Etesia’s green technology philosophy by also selling Etesia’s battery powered range of products including ride-on mowers, pedestrians, brushcutters and the ground-breaking range of robotic ETmowers. Labelled by some as the future of mowing, Dave is pleased that MGM are already on-board. “These battery powered products not only provide the operator with more comfort and less vibration but they are also healthier. Let us not forget about the savings either. Five litres of fuel will cost on average £6.50 per day whilst a Pellenc battery powered product works out at about 85p per day. That’s a significant amount of savings over a long period of time,” he said.
Cricketer Paul is bowled over by fees win Park Holidays UK helped keen cricketer Paul Rodway pull off a blinder when it drew his name first from the hat to win a full refund of his 2015 pitch fees. Paul, who lives in Canterbury, can now look forward to an entire fee-free year enjoying his caravan holiday home at Marlie holiday park near New Romney in Kent. The lucky draw prize was worth over £3,500 to Paul who bought his holiday home at Marlie last year after enjoying stays with a friend who is also an owner on the park. The relaxed and carefree atmosphere, he said, convinced him that this would be a perfect escape from the stresses of everyday life – and he has since never looked back. Paul, aged 54, is a former dairy farmer who now makes a living as a farm consultant, as well as assisting with patient support at a Canterbury psychiatric hospital. The draw to win back 12 months of pitch fees is held every year by Park Holidays UK, and is open to all holiday home owners on the group's 24 parks in Devon and Southern England. Owners at Marlie were recently delighted to learn that the park had won permission to remain open for 11.5 months of the year - a fortnight's addition to its previous opening season. Its extensive facilities include an indoor pool and an entertainments venue.

Parks
and Rides
Holiday parks are the perfect venue for coin-operated children’s rides. Families with young children and money to spend on entertaining them are the target audience for this type of product. Nothing attracts young children more than a brightly coloured ride and a familiar character and no family photo album is complete without a snap of a toddler enjoying this experience! For holiday park operators kiddie rides are also a great way to earn extra revenue without sacrificing much floor space. They are a great addition to any family oriented environment and perfect for areas where there is a high footfall of younger visitors. For this feature we have spoken to leading suppliers to find out what operators need to know when choosing kiddie rides for their venue.
I Keep the rides clean and carry out daily checks to ensure that the ride is working correctly, and is safe and appealing to visitors. No parent would want to put their child on or in a dirty run down ride. I The condition and cleanliness of the ride obviously reflects on your site and business, so choose a gel-coated ride as opposed to a painted one. Gel coated rides are made from a self coloured GRP which allows it to stay clean, bright and colourful for much longer. It does not chip, scratch or wear as easily as paint. It's much easier to polish up which reduces the costs on long term refurbishing and maintenance rather than having to have it repainted. I Make sure your supplier is reputable, all rides comply with British Standards and carry relevant Health & Safety related certification.
I Holiday parks should looks for rides that not commonly found in shopping malls or supermarkets. Newer rides, with interactivity, complex movements and a strong visual impact are considered de facto in this environment. I Rides will work well wherever there is footfall from small children. It's recommended that rides be placed indoors. This is to protect them from the damage and problems caused by weather. The rides have electronic components, which obviously need to be kept dry and away from wind and rain. Plus, nobody would want to use a ride outdoors if the weather was bad!
I Some locations may operate outside but the rides must be sheltered. Wherever the rides are placed, there must be sufficient clearance on all sides. A 2ft clearance is recommended. You want the ride to catch the attention of the visitors so they are best placed in foyers, fronts of arcades, near entrances to family club rooms, restaurants/cafe's and indoor play areas. I Rides should always be placed in a spacious indoor environment and not hidden away from view and preferably near the main pedestrian thoroughfares. However, many parks have their own FEC’s – rides will always perform well in these locations. I Static 240v children’s rides can be placed anywhere around the park where there is a socket and shelter from the elements, and
preferably near to cafés and rest areas, so that parents and guardians can relax whilst watching the children play! Moving 12v and 24v battery operated rides can be placed in any area with a suitable amount of space, mainly with required track areas of between 4.5 x 4.5m and 6m x 12m in size
How safe are kiddie rides?
Kiddie rides, in general are extremely safe as long as they are used and operated correctly. All rides display a message stating that riders must be supervised by an adult. All rides operated within the UK should have an ADIPS (Amusement Device Inspection Procedure Scheme) certificate of conformity, and display the corresponding sticker. This is basically the MOT for the ride that ensures it has been tested and has passed all relevant checks. A new ADIPS test should be carried out annually. The date that the next test is due will be displayed on the ADIPS sticker. Most rides are fitted with start buttons these days, which allow the child to get seated comfortably and safely before the rides begins its motion. All rides should be fitted with something for the rider to hold on to, for example steering wheels or handles. “All rides that we supply to the UK and Ireland are CE compliant and TUV compliant. They are fully homologated and in addition are ADIPS tested says SB Machines Managing Director Paolo Sidoli. We have numerous safety features on our rides depending on the complexity of movement: most rides have our custom made marine grade click lock

buckle seat belts and soft start/stop movements that can be adjusted,” “A ride that lifts and rotates will always have a safety mat and a stop button. These features also apply to our mini wheel range of rides. The safety of a child is paramount and we conduct exhaustive risk assessments on each ride before it is dispatched,” he adds.
How often do they need changing?
“The time a machine stays on site all depends on the owner of the ride. It's a good idea to rotate your stock of rides every 12 months or so providing you have other rides available,” says Gareth Jones Production Manager at Kiddy Rides. “This allows the operator to carry out any maintenance and also renew the ADIPS certification. This periodic rotation will ensure the rides on site don't become run down and tired looking, and also keeps the attraction to a maximum. However some operators will renew their certification whilst the ride is still on site and operate it for longer depending on their return on investment.” “Children’s rides have a very long life, and by way of an example we are still supply spare parts for rides that we made over twenty years ago!” says David Robinson of World of Rides. “However, some rides have long steady earning income lives, such as fire engines and racing cars, and some have shorter and much higher earning lives, such as those that are based on popular film and TV characters.” “A sensible economic lifespan of a ride is normally 5 – 8 years but a ride with indoor use can remain on site for 15 years plus. Maintenance is relatively straightforward with no specialist technical skills necessary. We provide all operators with a simple check list that they can follow,” adds Paolo Sidoli of SB Machines.

Perfect holiday park rides Kiddy Rides UK We have many rides which would work perfectly in holiday parks. Our Bus ride is proving to be particularly popular as we can personalise the theme and and provide dedicated decalsfor the site. We have done this many times before for play centres, garden centres and promotional events displaying their name and logo within the theme of the ride. We also have very popular character rides including a range of Peppa Pig rides, Pip Ahoy and more recently SpongeBob SquarePants!
SB Machines Our best selling rides are the rides that will work well in holiday parks. Customers always chase the highest cashbox return and the Double Pony Express, Tagadisco, Missile and Crazy Clock are the best performing rides SB Machines supplies coin-operated rides to the large and small holiday parks alike and have seen an enormous growth in this market over recent years with the increasing popularity of this sector amongst UK holidaymakers. Some of the best cashbox results we get on our rides are from holiday parks.
World of Rides All our rides have worked well in holiday parks for very many years, as this is the market that we started with and grew with, but our battery operated racing cars and bumper boats are still the real musthaves, and our new jungle, farm and dinosaur ranges of
animal rides have become the latest sensation in many of the leading holiday parks this year, with constant queues forming to use them! In addition, our 240v mini sand-pit diggers are continuing to grow in popularity, as are all our 24v boats, which can be operated in either existing lakes or in our own easy to assemble above-ground pools! All our rides are pollution free, with volume controllable sound effects, so that they can be run until late into the evening on fine summer nights, without risking keeping young children awake with the noise, as is the case with petrol engine rides! All our rides can also be sited either indoors or outdoors, whatever the weather, and are easily portable.

Drowning Prevention Technology in the 21st Century
Damian Hall, BA, IOSH Tech, CIMSPA is a Safety Management Practitioner specialising in all forms of water safety management. Hall Associates 07855 844598 dh@hallassociates.eu The Health and Safety Executive Publication `Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools’ (MHSISP) states that “Constant poolside provision by lifeguards provides the best assurance of pool users safety”. While this is wise, it is not always practical for smaller leisure pools. We must also acknowledge that even the best-trained lifeguards are only human and can make mistakes from time to time. MHSISP goes on to say that sometimes risk assessment indicates alternatives to constant lifeguard cover are acceptable - perhaps for smaller pools: ‘Whenever the pool is in use, a member of staff will need to be designated as `on call’ to respond immediately to the alarm and deal with any emergency. It is essential that such staff are trained in pool rescue, CPR techniques and first aid.’ Focussing on the `alarm’ word, we might think of a poolside alarm button as an early piece of Drowning Prevention Technology. Today we all accept and expect sophisticated Fire Alarm systems as the norm. Most domestic properties have smoke detectors at the very least. So why should a swimming pool be any different? And exactly what technologies are available? If Drowning Prevention Technology can reduce the likelihood of drowning then we’d be foolish, negligent even, not to consider it. Existing technologies range from simple, bather-activated, wristband alarms to highly sophisticated software and imaging
18 00

algorithms, using specialist cameras that detect `drowning movement’ patterns. Whatever technology is employed; it should form part of an over-arching considered and cohesive Pool Safety Operating Plan (PSOP). This in turn should be based on a comprehensive Risk Assessment. This management planning will inform whether a pool relies solely on lifeguards or a combination of lifeguards backed up by technology or technology in combination with the Pools Safety & Response Team. There are several suppliers out there but two companies worth a particular mention here are SenTAG and Poolview. SenTAG, which is licensed in the UK by a Swedish parent company, is a wristband device, which monitors a pre-set depth and time. If the wearer remains stationary for a given period then an alarm, or alarms, are sounded to a main control panel or mobile device. One of the benefits of SenTAG is not just its function as a drowning alarm but as a means to raise awareness amongst users of the risks to young children. The simple process of issuing the band creates an opportunity for a timely
conversation about children and pool safety. User feedback shows that parents and carers welcome this. Poolview are specialists in pool-based CCTV and specifically underwater camera systems, which act as a supplement to traditional supervision. Lifeguards being able to see under the water can make a huge difference because a bather can slip under the water in the blink of an eye and surface rippling and/or glare can make observation challenging. SwimEye, which comes from Norway, is a relatively new underwater camera system, which uses computer software to monitor patterns of movement that indicate a drowning person and raises the alarm. So, these are just some examples of what’s out there. The process of selection will include a consideration of pool and user profiles, who and how many guests use the pool, the type of pool and existing supervision arrangements. A careful consideration of suitable technology in combination with trained lifeguards and/or supervisors can offer improvements in safety performance as well as possibly operating economies.

Holiday park fun ...for everyone!
However, every ride is fully programmable by the operator for price of play, speed, length of time, sound effects volume, and they can also be set to run on free-play for use during all-inclusive promotional events such as children’s parties!
World of Rides long proven and exciting range of 12v and 24v battery-operated rides are almost all twin seat for carrying a ‘Parent and Child’ in safety, which can also all safely be used either indoors or outdoors, whatever the weather… without creating any Air or Noise Pollution, so as not to annoy guests trying to get small babies asleep!
In addition, their new single seat ‘FUNSIZE JUNGLE ANIMAL RIDES’ are the latest children’s ride sensation from World of Rides for 2015, and they are currently being successfully operated by a number of the UK’s leading holiday park operators, in order to both increase their appeal to their visitors and guests, and to also extend their season with more indoor pay-toplay rides for when the days begin to get shorter!
Due to their safe low voltage source of motive power, they allow most of the leading U.K. Holiday Park and Resort operators to provide their young visitors with the most profitable and fun to use range of battery rides available, in order to provide… ‘Family FUN For Everyone’… without the need to be near an electric socket, except for when safely recharging the all-day batteries overnight!
Each ride is fitted with a seat sensor in order to ensure that the ride only runs if the child is safely seated, as well as a front sensor to ensure that the ride stops before it runs into anything… and each ride fully H.S.E. – A.D.I.P.S. tested prior to delivery!
To complement their range of Jungle themed rides, they have also launched their brand new range of FUNSIZE JURASSIC DINOSAUR RIDES… in time for the release of the new film! Their rides can all be viewed on their website: www.worldofrides.com

Case study When Jenni and Andrew Thomas opened the doors of their idyllic 300acre working farm, Castle Pren, in glorious rural mid-Wales to holidaymakers the first things on their shopping list were two Caldera Vacanza hot tubs. Boasting panoramic countryside views, the boutique collection of brand new, uniquely designed eco–friendly lodges is part of a farm diversification project. The high quality lodges offer a perfect escape from the bustle of everyday life. And what could be more relaxing than lapping up the beautiful views from the vantage point of a hot tub? Jenni and Andrew called on the services of Will and Emma Welch of Three Counties Pools & Spas in Hereford. Jenni says: “In the two months that we have been open, the hot tubs have proved a wonderful business investment - the customers absolutely love them! No matter what their ages or the weather (it can be pouring down and they are still in use), or time of day (yes, even midnight) they are occupied!”

Welcome and contents
Welcome to We wish you a warm welcome to the very first event dedicated solely to the glamping industry. Interest in glamping is at an all time high as business opportunities continue to spring up among existing accommodation providers looking to extend, other businesses looking to diversify or the raft of new pop-up and pre-pitched businesses appearing for the first time. What is also fascinating is the prospect that glamping can bring new customers and new demographic to every sector. The excitement surrounding glamping has been evident in the interest and support that we have received whilst putting the show together. The result is a fantastic range of structures,
products and services to be viewed (many being shown for the first time in the UK) and the most comprehensive and in-depth seminar programme yet seen for existing and new operators in the glamping sector. Whether you are exploring glamping for the first time or seeking to extend or improve an existing business, The Glamping Show will deliver contacts, information and face-to-face advice that would take months to deliver by any other route. We would like to say a big thank you to all the exhibitors, supporters, speakers and promoters for their help pulling this first event together and we hope that all our visitors have an enjoyable, interesting and worthwhile show.

Glamping: An Additional Revenue Stream Glamping is believed to be the fastest growing holiday sector worldwide with huge potential here in the uK. in today’s economic climate additional revenue streams are important and glamping offers a unique income source for pubs that are looking to maximise the potential of their property. in 2014, surveys were carried out by Visitengland and Barclays Bank revealing that uK ‘staycations’ and short breaks are on the increase, with annual expenditure from domestic tourists projected to grow by 25% to over 1.8 billion by 2017. if ever there was a time to establish a glamping site that time is now!
Henry Alliss - Golf Operations Manager Old Thorns Hotel & Golf Club What type of glamping do you offer? We have 10 eco-pods that are serviced by a separate shower and toilet block. Each pod has a double or twin beds, a wardrobe, heater, TV, kettle and sofa.
What prompted you to create a glamping site? A glamping site enabled us to offer our guests a modern, fashionable and alternative accommodation option to staying in the main hotel.
How long has your glamping site been established? Our glamping facilities were launched 3 to 4 years ago.
How popular is it with your golf players? Our golf players have a good appetite for staying in our eco-pods and they are equally popular with our non-golf playing guests.
How has it enhanced your business? It has added another element of fun and excitement to the club as well as offering a unique alternative to staying in a traditional bedroom.
What lessons have you learnt through diversifying in this way? Our glamping site has enabled us to attract new guests as well as provide our regular guests with a new experience.
What would you say are the golden rules to bear in mind when considering establishing a glamping site? It’s all in the planning. You have to ensure that the area that you are planning to develop is suitable for the clients who are going to be using it as well as anticipating what their needs are going to be. www.oldthorns.com

Ian Peet - Director The Three Horseshoes, Lincolnshire What type of glamping do you offer? We have Lotus Belle Tents and a Retro Caravan.
What prompted you to create a glamp site? Maximising the revenue on a small campsite and to use the pub’s catering facilities to create a new product for glamping, weddings, and events.
How long has your glamp site been established? 3 years.
What did you need to do in terms of licensing? The pub was not open when we took it over so it needed a new premises licence. Various health and safety assessments also need to be carried out for which local bodies are happy to help.
What type of promotion have you carried out to publicise your Glamping site? Mainly internet-based via our own website and other web directories promoting glamping. Also community radio, national and local press coverage, and social media.
How has it enhanced your business? The pub is not viable without the glamping and campsite. Glamping brings added customers into the pub and with good margins, contributing a significant income.
What lessons have you learnt through diversifying in this way? Be innovative, and use your current business to promote your new ideas and products.
What would you say are the golden rules to bear in mind when considering establishing a Glamping site adjacent to a pub? Booze can lead to difficulties, especially when people are staying a while, consider the type of market that might be attracted to glamping by a pub and decide how to attract or detract them. www.the3horseshoes.com
Bob O'Connor – Managing Director
The Aspinall Foundation, Howletts Wild Animal Park and Port Lympne Reserve What type of glamping do you offer? We offer 2 types of Glamping at Port Lympne Reserve. Eco Pods in our Pinewood camp, which are 4 berth units and our 8 berth safari tents which are located in our Elephant Lodge glamping site
What prompted you to create a glamp site? It gave us the opportunity to broaden our customer base, attract customers from outside the traditional 90 minute drive time for day visit attractions, and reduce our dependence on weather as a determining factor in our business.
How long has your glamp site been established? Our first investment into short breaks was 7 years ago.
What did you need to do in terms of licensing? It was a simple process of working with the local authority.
How has it enhanced your business? It has increased visitor footfall, increased customer spend, and created a new untapped market.
What lessons have you learnt through diversifying in this way?
Having customers on site 24 hours a day brings new challenges compared to customers who visit for 4-6 hours. We have also learned not to discount too early.
What would you say are the golden rules to bear in mind when considering establishing a glamping site? Be different, don’t allow price to be the main differentiator from your competitors. www.aspinallfoundation.org

Strong environmental principles are important to glampers, so this is your opportunity to learn about the eco options available when it comes to earth friendly materials, utilities and services. If you're concerned about obtaining planning permission for your idea, attend the seminars on Thursday at 12 pm and Friday at 3pm, aimed at tackling this complicated subject. If you are bringing the kids to the show (and even if you're not) take a break with some light entertainment by entering the Mad Max Challenge hosted by the RSPB, to build a bird or bug shed. To secure the long-term success of your business you need to be comfortable promoting your ideas. This doesn't come easily to everyone, so take the opportunity to try it out at the show. Network and learn from others. Ask questions about their successes, failures and recommendations for what you want to achieve with your own business. Get inspiration for your business branding. This is one of the most valuable marketing tools you can use to work hard for you from the beginning (if you get it right). Attend the seminar to gather examples around the world of who got it right and who didn't, at 3.30 pm on Friday. Struggling to finance your project? Find out what the options are at 3 pm on Friday. Are you interested in learning how you can promote your business so it skyrockets to success? Then be sure to strengthen your knowledge of social media. Check out the seminar on Thursday at 11.30 am to find out more. And finally... Explore everything, go everywhere, talk to everyone... you never know where that nugget of golden inspiration will come from. By exploring the unknown it is likely you will find something you didn't expect... something amazing...
Sarah Riley (pictured) is a consultant, trainer and independent Glamping industry expert with no affiliations with any specific companies or brands. She is also the founder of the most comprehensive course for luxury camping and Glamping the outdoor industry has ever seen. In partnership with Inspired Camping, it has been developed to be easily followed online with explanation videos and detailed information to support learners through every step of the process. The different skills that are explored in the course include the fundamental business idea, the options available, the set up process, timelines and essential launch plan. Taking the next step, the course then looks at how to gather relevant market statistics, how best to carry out business planning, as well as calculating expected costs and income. In addition, it covers aspects of marketing, photography and website optimisation. Finally, it will take students through environmental issues, general site maintenance and event management. “We literally cover all aspects to starting a luxury camping and glamping business including a social media course for beginners, as this is essential for creating a buzz about your new project from the beginning, says Sarah.
