Exhibition Guide 2016

22nd-24th September 2016 Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire

Welcome

Welcome to Welcome to our second Glamping Show in the lovely setting of Stoneleigh Park. If you are a visitor to this event, then you are most likely operating or thinking of setting up a glamp site. This means that you will already have considered that glamping can mean a myriad of things. It can mean a tent, or a pod (pods can come in many forms) or a tree house, or a converted train carriage, aircraft or airstream. It can mean en suite bathrooms and spa pools – or rustic

showers in wooded glades. For many people, it is opening up the idea of a camping holiday to people who would never normally consider camping – because it is about removing the barriers, such as putting up the tent or sleeping on a cold, hard ground. However, that is just the starting point. The one thing that every successful glamping operator really needs is inspiration. That’s where we come in. Our exhibitors will show you a range of products and services that could turn your ideas into a reality. Our extensive seminar programme of over 60 speakers will also inform and entertain – offering a priceless opportunity for you to hear from others who have gone through the

same experience, or who can give advice that may save you time and money. In order to extend your experience at The Glamping Show – why not pick up a copy of our quarterly publication Glamping Business and sign up for a free subscription? There are plenty of products and services featured as well as stories from other glamping operators on how they set up successful businesses. Enjoy your visit to The Glamping Show – we hope you will be inspired!

The Tiny House team uses the same materials as you would expect to see being used to build a loft conversion on a residential house and their lifespan is expected to last the same. Based on the same ideas and designs with a useful upper sleeping loft, our customers wanted the designs larger and not particularly built on a chassis. The Cozy Cottage Tiny House range are now built as kits, which can be delivered throughout the UK as Glamping Lodges.

THE OUTDOOR KITCHEN OUTDOOR-KITCHEN.BIZ Trish MacCurrach, of the outdoor kitchen fell in love with cooking outside several years ago while living in Serbia. For 6 years she has been selling enamel outdoor cooking pots, tripods and colourful enamel cookware for outdoor adventures. This year she is having an outdoor kitchen built in her garden in the UK. She is often found at festivals demonstrating outdoor cooking, running cooking competitions or teaching others the joys of cooking outside. She has been involved in Forest School training in Herefordshire. Trish says “ When camping and exploring a new part of the country, one of the great joys is local food cooked outside over a wood fire. Children of all ages flourish as they discover they can prepare and cook food in the wild”.

Thursday 12.30 Pod 1 Saturday 14.30 Pod 3 Design your own Outdoor Kitchen Working out what to include in my outdoor kitchen and how it might work has proved harder than I thought. So, this inspirational talk is designed to help you jump straight into your project without too much hardship. If you are longing for an outdoor kitchen in your garden, campsite or woodland then come to this session. We will start with some pictures of different outdoor kitchens, mostly from Serbia. We will consider which materials to use, where to build, sun, shade, storage and what to include. I doubt if you will leave with a completed plan but looking at the pictures and going through different possibilities will definitely set you on the path to your dream. Bring a note book. This is an inspirational workshop with opportunities to chat, and work on a plan suitable for your own space.

SEMINAR SPEAKERS Adrian Williams SOLAR TECHNOLOGY SOLARTECHNOLOGY.CO.UK

Founder of Solar Technology International, Adrian Williams has built a business at the forefront of solar innovation. He is always looking for new and innovative ways to extend the usage of ‘off grid’ solar solutions. Williams left college with A-levels then became a climbing instructor, before shifting direction into retail and spending time in B2B product sales. In 2000, Williams started up Solar Technology International Ltd as a UK distributor of solar-powered garden lights. The innovation of a Stainless Steel garden light with improved durability and aesthetics, was the first of several key milestones in the development of the Company as an innovator of solar technology including: ! 2004 – Launch of first handheld portable solar charger ! 2015 – Launch of semi-flexible solar panel with self healing surface and SolarHub 16 a solar lighting solution for equestrians, winner of BETA International 2015 Innovation Award ! 2016 – of SolarMate Arena Light, winner of the BETA International 2016 Innovation Award

Thursday 14.30 Pod 1 Can Solar Power herald a brighter future for the Glamping Industry? Back to nature doesn’t mean back to basics. Finding a balance that offers the sustainability and eco assurance demanded by the discerning Glamper isn’t an easy task. A reliable, green and sustainable power supply is a critical ingredient, however its efficacy is questionable in many countryside locations where off the beaten track equals off grid. Solar power is becoming a leading light in the quest for global renewable energy and although scalability is a political hot potato, usage of Solar on a smaller scale is becoming a force to be reckoned with. I’ll guide you through the myths and misnomers of Solar past to present and will put forward a case that Solar could be the future for the Glamping business.

Thursday 12.30 Pod 3 Occupancy Prediction – An Art or a Science? If anybody could predict with certainty: “if I did XZY a specific number of paying visitors will come as a result,” not only should they be supremely successful in business but they should be able to make future investment without risk. Some might say that would take all of the fun out of running a attraction-based business or destination. Chris in forty minutes, including Q&A will try and give a few pointers based around both the science and the art of volume/occupancy prediction which might help reduce some of the risk without eliminating all of the fun around this area of business strategy.

We market all styles of glamping for many different owners but all have a shared commitment to being at the top of their game. We have learnt from every single one of them over the last three years and that gives us a privileged overview of the glamping market. Your choice of glamping accommodation will depend on how much you have to spend, who you want to attract, how much you want to earn, how long you want to run your business and most importantly, what you want to create. I will try to outline the possibilities drawing on our experience and a few case studies.

Deborah Meaden and Theo Paphitis. With their input, reestore grew from a hobby fuelled by passion to one of the UK’s most respected and renowned designers and manufacturers of upcycled products. Reestore now has a client list that includes ‘The Body Shop’ who have purchased over 200 bath tub chairs for their stores worldwide, completed several installations for Google’s head offices globally and he has won gold at the Chelsea Flower show with Kate Gould Gardens. Max then turned his hand to TV presenting and his credits include two series of ‘George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces’, ‘Fill Your House For Free’ and two series of Channel 4’s summer hit ‘Shed of the Year’. Last year Max fronted a special for ‘George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces’ which followed his journey selling his house and building a house boat. The show was the highest rating episode across the series. Simon Tregoning CLASSIC COTTAGES CLASSIC.CO.UK In three years we have grown a collection of over 50 glamping properties founded on 37 years’ experience of marketing a portfolio of holiday homes which now numbers over 850 properties. I live on The Lizard in West Cornwall opposite the first glamping site to join our portfolio – so I have seen it grow from the grass up. I live with my wife who is an artist and two daughters aged 17 and 19. I joined my parents in the family company, Classic Cottages, in 1989. We have grown from a small team marketing 250 holiday homes in the West Country to a staff of 40 and a portfolio of some 850 properties. In 2013 we started Classic Glamping as an offshoot of Classic Cottages and we now market over 50 glamping properties. Outside work I am a school governor and a member of Gunwalloe Surf Life Saving Club.

Friday 12.00 Pod 2 & Saturday 13.00 Pod 2 Creating Affordable Glamping Solutions With glamping typically being seen as a high-end, luxury camping alternative, Max aims to introduce ways in which it can be affordable and fun for all the family. He proposes his own design ideas from DIY treehouses to bedsheet teepees and upcycled beach huts and places emphasis on experiences rather than objects, a lifestyle many of us now crave. Max will then be taking questions from the audience to help solve their design dilemmas. Taking inspiration from his new book, Upcycling, Max also suggests how reclaimed materials can lend a hand in the glamping sector.

From an operator perspective, the right booking platform has all kinds of other useful benefits, too, vis-à-vis: ! Seamless website integration ! User-friendly interface ! Flexible pricing tool ! Payment tracking/accounting integration ! Marketing by platform providers But which booking system is best? How do you choose? How much should you pay? Thursday 14.00 Pod 2 Building Barnutopia Barnutopia Luxury Glamping opened in June 2015 with three fully furnished yurts. Katrina and husband Steve take a hands-on approach to building their glamping business. They have assembled yurts, trawled second hand shops for furniture, turned a lean-to into a camp kitchen, cooked New Year’s Eve dinner for nineteen, transformed a cattle barn into a television lounge, handled a complete water failure during a fully booked weekend, rescued lost guests stuck in the mud, survived Storm Barney and added pet pigs as an attraction. Their To Do list continues to grow. For their efforts, guests rewarded Barnutopia with more than sixty 5-star reviews (and only 5-star reviews) during the first nine months. CAMP KATUR CAMPKATUR.COM Camp Katur was a dream ambition for many years. After travelling the length and breadth of the UK as an Expert Trainer for a large international brand and with a background in marketing; I knew I would never be settled working for someone else and was always eager to sail my own ship! At the age of 10, I told my family that I would have my own business one day, not just any old business but something I would be passionate about and in 2013 that day came. With a love of the great outdoors, passion for travel, and enjoyment of festivals and a general curiosity about life, the urge for the Glamping lifestyle took charge.

Nic Snell CERTAINLY WOOD LTD CERTAINLYWOOD.CO.UK

A Diverse Opportunity Taking you through the basics of turning a dream into reality, Kerry, owner of Camp Katur will be sharing with you how she found the perfect location, chose varied accommodation, took the plunge to leave an employment with a secure income, and turned what was initially planned as solely a Glamping retreat into a three-in-one successful business; offering unique accommodation, weddings and events, within 12 months. The session will focus on: ! Why I started and how I got to where I am today. ! Different structures – The pros & cons to having a mix of accommodation and why you might choose one over the other. ! Events – what events can bring to the business and how they can broaden your client base and bring repeat business.

Nic Snell is from a farming family in Herefordshire and is now Managing Director of Certainly Wood, a business set up 10 years ago with his brother George as part of a farm diversification. The business now produces 20,000 tonnes of British kiln dried logs and kindling and also the fantastic Flamers natural firelighters, also made on site. Certainly Wood has a strong focus on British and sustainable production with wood fired kilns and solar panels. The company focused the business on wood burning stoves for homes and worked with many of the UK’s stove manufacturers who clearly state that over 80% of stove problems are caused by using wet wood – a very common problem. Certainly Wood now has a strong customer base in the camping and glamping market and customers are really starting to see the benefits of kiln dried logs for their campers and most importantly how campsites can make money from wood!

Saturday 12.00 Pod 2 How Wood Burning and Campfires can bring Major Benefits to Glampers and Campsite Owners Glamping has a strong focus on wood burning stoves and even wood burning hot tubs, but it seems there is a lack of knowledge and education about the importance of having the right fuel. Very dry wood (<20% moisture content) is crucial and not only provides more heat but is easier to manage and means you need less fuel too. In addition, more and more campsites now allow fires and many are now overcoming the concerns of health and safety or burnt grass etc. Many campsites now see significant benefit in allowing fires and attracting more campers who just love to have the family sitting around a campfire. It not only teaches the children about how to light a fire, but also how to be safe with fire. Then of course there is the excitement of cooking on wood and the wonders for every child (and parent) of cooking marshmallows.

As one of the few people whose work involves an impartial overview of every aspect of glamping – the structures, design, owner’s perspective and the guest experience – she has a unique, hands-on knowledge of the glamping industry as a whole. This wealth of knowledge is fortified by Kate’s enthusiasm for the glamping lifestyle, an intuitive flair for USPs and pragmatic approach.

What can we learn from International Glamping Developments? An enquiry to ‘The Glamping Show’ earlier this year resulted in Kate being flown to Ecuador to work with their Government’s Ministry of Tourism. An earthquake in May destroyed most of the coastal tourist accommodation which led them to consider glamping as one potential regeneration option, which required objective advice. This project brought the importance of creating the right glamping for each location into sharp focus – a factor equally relevant to a UK glamping site. This seminar will walk you through Kate’s decisionmaking process. Kate is keen for this to be an interactive seminar that helps you gain a better understanding of how to make your glamping site succeed – feel free to ask questions throughout.

Her knowledge and experience was also considerably broadened by a trip to Western Australia and its developing glamping sector in 2015, and advising the Ecuador Ministry of Tourism in 2016. She was keen to assure us that “it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it!”

David Thompson GROUND-HEAT.CO.UK Ground Heat Installations, established in September 2006, provides a nationwide design and installation service with its base in the North West of England. The company is the vision of David Thompson, Director and Owner, who has over 35 years’ experience in the plumbing and heating industry. While on a callout to diagnose a fault on a heat pump he discovered the versatility of ground source which ignited a passion for this advanced technology. This chance encounter triggered a memory of his father explaining to him that one day people would extract heat from the ground to heat their homes. This generated a strong passion for ground source heat pumps and lowering fuel costs. Over time, a keen interest evolved into a company and Ground Heat is recognised as a market leader receiving many national industry awards. Initially Ground Heat concentrated on domestic installations then developed specific concept designs for social housing to combat fuel poverty.
