NigamAntha mahA dEsikar at ThuppulNigamAntha mahA dEsikar at Thuppul

Annotated Commentary In English By Oppiliappan KOil

Sri VaradAchAri SaThakOpan

SlOkam 12 SwAmy DEsikan pays tribute to the righteous ones who relate to Lord ViLakkoLi PerumAL as sarva vida bandhu and perform SaraNAgathy to Him: Tva< matr< c iptr< shj< invas< sNt> smeTy zr[< suùd< git< c , in>sIm inTy inrv* suo àkaz< dIpàkaz sivÉUit gu[< ivziNt. tvAm mAtaram ca Pitaram sahajam nivAsam santa: samEtya sharaNam suhrudam gatim ca | nisseema nitya niravadya sukha-PrakAsham dIpaprakAsha savibhUti guNam vishanti ||

Meaning:

O

h ViLakkoLi PerumALE! Those saadhu janams, who have a clear understanding of

the Tatthva Thrayam (Jeevan-Prakruthi-Isvaran) perform SaraNAgathy to You as a result of recognizing You as their Comforting Mother, guiding Father, supportive Brother, and the basis for their existence and as their Parama PurushArTam. Their SaraNAgathy lands them in SrI VaikuNTham, where they enjoy the uninterrupted Kaimkaryam to You. There, they are immersed in the ParipoorNa BrahmAnandham of enjoying You as abode of Jn~Anam and Aanandham (satyam Jn~Anam anantam Brahma), as the Lord of both leelA and nitya VibhUtis (ubhaya VibhUti naathan) and as the treasure house of limitless auspicious attributes (kOsam of ananta kalyANa GuNams).

Additional Comments The First two Paadams of the slOkam are: tvAm Maataram ca Pitaram sahajam nivAsam SANTA: samEtya sharaNam suhrudam gatim ca Anvaya kramam (prose order) is: “dIpaprakAsha! SANTHA: tvAm Maataram, Pitaram ca sahajam, nivAsam, suhrudam, gatim ca sharaNam samEtya.” The Importance of the word “SANTHA:” in DEsika SampradhAyam The word “santa:” is very important for SwAmy DEsikan. He starts his SrI RanganAtha PaadhukA Sahasram (RPS) with “santa:” and ends it with the same word “santa:” The first slOkam of SrI RPS beginning with “santa:” is: SANTA: shrIranga-pruthveesa caraNa-trANa sEkharA: Jayanti Bhuvana-trANa pada-pankaja-rENava:

8

Meaning: Those great ones (periyOrkaL/santa:) who adorn with joy the Paadhukais of Lord RanganAthan on their heads not only reach the supreme bliss (sadgati) but also grant others sakala purushArthams. Those santa: are the ones worthy of supreme adoration. The last (the 1008th) slOkam of Sri RPS ending up with “SANTA:” takes this form: Jayati YatirAja sookti: Jayati Mukundasya PaadukA YugaLee tadubhaya dhanA: trivEdim avandyayanta: jayanti bhuvi SANTA:

Meaning: The SrI sookthis of YathirAjar (Sumathi) are victorious over the granthams of vEda Baahya mathams and Kumathis. The pair of Paadhukais of BhOga-MOksha dAyaka Mukundan is victorious over all samsAric sufferings. Those Santa: (SadAchAryaas), who consider the PoorvAchArya SrI Sookthis and the twin Paadhukais of the Lord as THEIR WEALTH do not get entrapped in the vithaNDA vivAdhams of Kumathis (those with muddy minds in understanding the true purport of vEdas) and shine victorious in this world by performing upadEsams to their disciples on the Tatthva-Hitha-PurushArTa Jn~Anam and help them also to reach Sadhgathi. SANTA: here stands for SadAchAryAs, the truly noble AchAryAs saluted by SwAmy DEsikan, who lit the lamp of SampradhAya DhIpam to bring the DhIpa PrakAsan before the eyes and the minds of their sishyAs. SwAmy DEsikan pays tribute to such SANTHA: at the end of AchArya KruthyAdhikAram of Srimath Rahasya Thraya Saaram (30th Chapter):

mR q bfb Et cikafv a{ kpfpal inft A v y eml fl amf ; R q bfB ; A bv [ f; ^] y F p> ] fD y ev ] f} t l al f et R Q bfb ecnfet az ibfecl fv mfepR kcfcibnft v afpal f ` R q bfb cinfA t y i[ al f` z iy av iq kfEkbfb i[ Er MaruLaRRa DEsikar vaan uhappAl intha vaiyaamellAm iruLaRRU IRaivan iNai adi pooNDu uya yeNNuthalAl therUL uRRa sem-thozhil selvam peruha SiRanthavar paal aruLuRRa sindhaiyinAl AZHIYAA VILAKKU yERRinaRE

Meaning: Those Jn~Ana Moorthys without any trace of nescience (MaruL aRRa Desikar/Santha:) with their own desire to enter Parama Padham as well as their intense desire to get rid of the nescience and viparItha Jn~Anams of their sishyAs are the most merciful. Out of their DayA, they show that the Lord’s Thiruvadi as the sole upAyam (means) for MOksham and enhance the Kaimkarya sampath of their SishyAs by lighting the nandhA (eternal) ViLakku of Sath sampradhAyam in the minds of their disciples. SwAmy DEsikan points out further that such Santha: (SadaAchAryAL) not only uplift their sishyAs but also save them by following the commands of their Lord, the First AchAryan in the Guru Paramparai (PraTamAchAryan). Such is the power of the word Santha: used by Swamy Desikan in the 12 th slOkam of SrI SaraNAgathi DhIpikai. What do the Santha: do further at DhIpa PrakAsan’s sannidhi? “santa: tvAm Maataram, Pitaram, sahajam, nivAsam, suhrudam, gatim ca (matvA) sharaNam samEtya” is what they do. Those Santha:

9

consider You, DhIpa PrakAsA, as their Mother, Father, Brother, Friend, Abode and also target for reaching. In the context of all these relationships, they (Santha:) perform SaraNAgathi at Your ThiruvadikaL. The fruit of that SaraNAgathy is the full enjoyment of you, the Lord at srI VaikuNTham. The anantha kalyANa guNams of the Lord that are being enjoyed by the SanthA: is covered by the concluding two lines of this Twelfth SlOkam. The last two lines of the 12th SlOkam are: nisseema nitya niravadya sukha PrakAsham dIpa PrakAsha savibhUti guNam vishanti They celebrate the object of the SanthA’s enjoyment (paripoorNa BrahmAnandham) at SrI VaikuNTham. The rhyming of Sukha PrakAsan with DhIpa PrakAsan is music to the ears (parama MaadhUryam). The Ubhaya LingAdhikAraNam of Brahma Soothram is covered here. SrI VaikuNTha Naathan’s (DhIpa PrakAsan’s) Bliss and Jn~Anam are limitless (nisseema), eternal (nithyam) and free from sorrow of any kind (niravadhyam). The Sukha PrakAsam resulting from the combination of the anantha kalyANa GuNams and akhila hEya Prathyaneekathvam (free from blemish of any kind) makes DhIpa PrakAsan of ThirutthaNkA divya desam, an object of ParipoorNa BrahmAnandham as Para Vaasudevan (shrI VaikuNTha Naathan) at His Supreme abode of Param Padham. Thus concludes the powerful Twelfth SlOkam of SrI SaraNAgathi DhIpikai celebrating SadAchAryALs, Sath SampradhAyam and Guru paramparai starting from the PraTamAchAryan, SrI DhIpa PrakAsan. Many other unique SrI VaishNavite doctrines are also covered here in the short space of one slOkam. This is the greatness of Swamy DEsikan and that is why the uninterrupted continuation of NithyAradhanams for Him at His birthplace and for His sontha agrahAra PerumAL (DhIpa PrakAsan) is so important for us all. Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra

By

Tamarapu Sampath Kumaran Purusottama Deva was forced to leave the battlefield when his camp caught on fire, and he felt it was a great insult. He was immediately concerned that he would lose the deities from the Jagannath temple, and that they would be placed behind Ganesh in Kanchi. The King began to pray to Lord Jagannath: "O Lord Jagannath! Please help me. Due to being engaged in Your service of sweeping the road, the King of Kanchi has insulted me and cancelled my marriage. If I am defeated in this battle, is it not also Your defeat? It is a great insult to You! How can You, the Lord of the universe, sit behind the deity of Ganesh?" That night, Lord Jagannath appeared to the King in his sleep and told him, not to be worried. He suggested to go again to fight with the King of Kanchi and his army and assured that he will personally help him during the battle. The King awoke, and became encouraged to fight again with the King of Kanchi. King Purusottama Deva started his journey to Kanchi to fight for the second time.

22

This time disguised as soldiers, jagannath rode a black horse and Baladeva rode on a white horse ahead of the army unnoticed by anyone to fight on behalf of the king. Being the summer month of Vaisakhi and the weather being hot, they were thirsty. They noticed an old cowherd lady carrying a pot of buttermilk on her head. Her name was Manika, and she was on her way to the market to sell the buttermilk. Both the Lords wanting to drink buttermilk, stopped the old lady and drank to their hearts' content. When they finished, they prepared to leave and continue their journey. The old lady Manika stopped them and asked them for money. Saying that they are soldiers on their way to a battle Jagannath leaned down from His horse and gave Manika a golden ring from His finger and asked her to keep it with her, and exchange it for the money when their king passes by that way. Reluctantly, the old lady took the ring, and the brothers continued on their journey to the battle. The old lady Manika stood on the roadside awaiting the King's arrival. After some time she saw the king approaching with his army. Manika stopped the King and said to him, "Two of your soldiers were going by this road riding a black horse and a white horse. They looked like brothers. They drank my buttermilk but had no money to pay for it." She held her upturned palm towards the King, and showing him the golden ring she said "They gave this ring to me to give to you, and to collect the money for the buttermilk in exchange for this ring. Please take this ring and give me the cost of the buttermilk. When the King saw the ring he was very surprised as it was not an ordinary gold ring, but of Lord Jagannath's diamond ring. Then he understood that both the Lords had gone to Kanchi in the form of soldiers to keep up Jagannath's promise. The King saw this as confirmation that victory would be his, and he was very happy. He told Monika, "You were very fortunate to have seen Lord Jagannath and Lord Balaram and to serve them by giving them buttermilk. I will of course reimburse you as the Lord requested." The King was feeling so magnanimous due to having the Lords fighting in his army that he generously rewarded the woman ownership of several villages so that she could live comfortably. The King immediately established a village at the very spot the Lords partook of her buttermilk, and named the village Manika Patana. (This village is still there in Orissa). The King proceeded towards Kanchi. A huge battle took place between the soldiers. The soldiers of the King of Kanchi saw two new soldiers in Purusottama Deva's army who fought so vigorously that no one was able to defeat them. Many soldiers from the army of the King of Kanchi were killed, and the King of Kanchi was defeated. Purusottama Deva arrested Princess Padmavati instead of the King of Kanchi, and in revenge for the cancellation of his marriage to the princess, planned to arrange to marry her to a chandala, a road sweeper. He called for his minister and ordered him to look for one chandala boy to marry Princess Padmavati. Princess Padmavati was sad, because she had real affection for King Purusottama Deva. She knew he was acting out of revenge for her father’s actions. But King Purusottama Deva minister was very clever. He advised the King to be patient, as it would take some time to find a suitable chandala boy to marry the princess. In the meantime, the minister took Padmavati and gave her shelter at his house. As the Ratha-yatra day was approaching thousands of people were coming happily to Pun for the festival. But Princess Padmavati was not happy as she was thinking always of her upcoming marriage to a chandala. On the Ratha-yatra day, the minister came to Padmavati and told here that she should get dressed in her finest cloth to be got married, and advised her to rely on Lord Jagannath who will come to her rescue.

23

As everything was ready for the Ratha-yatra, the King of Puri walked in front of Lord Jagannath's chariot, carrying in his hand a golden broom to sweep the road. With devotion and pleasure he started sweeping the road. When Purusottama Deva finished sweeping, the minister brought Princess Padmavati to the King, and very cleverly said to him, "My dear King, I asked you to be patient in finding a suitable chandala for the Princess. I have come to you today to tell you that I have found a street sweeper whom I have deemed suitable to be her husband." The King said to his minister, "Very well, but I don't have time for this. Today is Ratha-yatra. Do as you will." The minister smiled at the King and replied, "But my dear King, the street sweeper I have chosen is you, Your Highness." The King stopped and looked in surprise at his minister, with a smile coming to his lips. The minister continued, "Your Highness, today you are a street sweeper. You instructed me to arrange the marriage of Princess Padmavati with a street sweeper, so I have chosen you." With that, the minister ordered Princess Padmavati to place a garland around the neck of King Purusottama Deva. The King happily accepted Princess Padmavati as his queen, and praised his minister for his sneaky intelligence Then Maharaja Purusottama Dev married the princess and she later gave birth to a great devotee of Lord Caitanya, who became known as King Prataparudra. According to the conditions set down by the King of Kanchi, the deity of Ganesh was brought to Puri and kept in a temple behind Jagannaths temple. The deities of Sri Sri Radha-Radhakanta which are worshiped at Gambhira were also brought from Kanchipuram. It is said that they were also worshipped in Jagannaths temple. These deities were worshipped on an altar that was located between Jagannath's altar and the room where the bhoga is prepared. The Jagannath temple cooks are experts at making so many nice varieties of foodstuffs for the Lord. After Sri Radha-Radhakanta came to stay in the temple, Lord Jagannath found that so many nice items were not being given to Him regularly. Lord Jagannath discovered that the deities of Sri Radha-Radhakanta, were eating all the nice foods that had been brought to the temple and prepared in the bhoga room. Upon this time Lord Jagannath instructed the pujaris to shift the deities to Kasi Mishra's house, which is

now known as Gambhira, where Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu stayed for eighteen years and also worshiped these same deities of Sri Sri Radha-Radhakanta.

Yathra will continue‌.. *********************************************************************************************************************

DHARMA STHOTHRAM

Arumbuliyur Jagannathan Rangarajan

Part 270.

Nandah,Sathyadharma On glories of Nama Sankeerthanam ,few lines on Gayatri Manthram is indicated in this part. In Sanskrit, this is said as Gayantam trayate iti Gayathri. Gayatri Manthram is said to be a Veda Maatha. This is also as a Vedic meter consisting of 3 X 8 = 24 syllables , In each of the 8 syllables there is a paadham or foot of the Manthram . Three paada of Gayathri manthram with 24 syllables is used in our daily Gayathri japam during our daily Pradhakala, Madyanika, and Sayankala (Morning, afternoon, evening ) sandhyavandanams. It is said four paada Gayathri Mantram is also in practice by few people which are done with Guru Sikshai. Sandhya vandanam is performed to cleanse our (Manasa, vacha, kriya ) mind, speech and acts. In this recitation of namas of Sriman Narayana (Kesavathi )for certain number of times, with indications in Pundra sthanams (Parts of our body). Parama pavithra Gayathri manthram protects those, who recite it during the three sandhyakalas. We invoke Gayathri Maatha to reside inside our minds during our regular Japam .This is sure to keep all our minds with inner lustre for ever and make us to live for a long prosperous happy and healthy life. Gayathri manthram is the hymn to the Sun since Sriman Narayana is visualized as being seated in the middle of the Sun as Soorya Narayana and the prayer is “ arka Mandala madhyastam , Soorya Koti sama prabham , which means Para Brahma roopan seated in the middle of the orbit of the Sun and has the lustre that surpasses that of crores of Sun. This manthra is said as Gayathri in the morning, ,savithri in the afternoon, and as saraswathi in the evening .Anyone who performs this Gayathri japam daily thrice a day, will get the full satisfaction of uttering divine namas number of times . Now on Dharma Sthothram ... In 528 th nama Nandah it is meant as one who is with all sorts of worldly pleasures and is not crazy of any ordinary material pleasures. Sriman Narayana has no contact with the world of senses, as He dwells in transcendence of all the

35

equipments of pleasure-the body, mind and intellect. Sri Krishna explained the secret of His incarnation as “Though by nature unborn, I take birth. Though I am the ordainer exercising authority over the entire creation, I submit myself to the orders of others. I am the formless, changeless ,eternal being. But I go transformations consequential to birth and growth. It is my own free will and choice that is at the root of assuming my forms, suitable to execute the purpose that I have designed for the good of the world. Hence there are no wants or particular specific pleasure for me in this world. ".In Peria Thirumozhi 3.8.1 pasuram Nanda vilakke alththarku ariyai indicates about Thirunangur Manimada koil perumal. Azhwar says as He is permanent for ever like nanda vilakku. He cannot be measured easily as He possesses each and everything in the universe and there is no such thing as "Not available with Him". Hence this nama Nanda shows His unique permanent aspect. IN 529th nama Sathyadharma it is meant as one who possess all Dharma ,kindness ,charity, purity and non injury characters in Him permanently. . Sriman Narayana is such a supreme personality following all sorts of Dharma in the most laudable level . He is also called as yogeswara because of the embodiment of Yoga .He is with rich in the experience of the Supreme Self. In the Upanishad it is said as “This alone is the Supreme Dharma which is to experience the Self through yoga. He is protecting all the surrendered persons, and perfectly following Dharma with true knowledge and other attributes are true. .He is true in his acts always. All devotees who approach Him are correctly rewarded in time and gets His grace with full pleasure. .Andal in Thiruppavai tells this as Aaava endru AAraindhu arul elor embavai. This means Devathi devan ,Sriman Narayana killed the demon Kesi, who was in the shape of horse. Mallars of another demon Kamsan also was killed by Him. Whenever any devotee approach Him, seeking the blessings, He Immediately acts. On hearing the voice of devotees ,He just start analyzing its nature and grant all deserving requests. Hence all are pleased instantly and become free from any problems or worries. Sathya is truthfulness or facts presented as they are.Dharma is observing righteousness in behavior . In Srimad Ramayanam ,Sri Rama is said as Ramo vigrahavan dharma ,as the personification of righteousness. In Srimad Ramayanam these lines as Dharmagnascha kruthakyagnascha sathya vakyo dhrudavrutha. Informs that Sri Rama knows and vows to practice truthfulness and righteousness . Hence Sathyadharma is for both truthfulness and righteousness.

SRIVAISHNAVISM

MANGALAGIRI The Demon Namuchi The Lord that has established himself on the hill is in the form of Narasimha (man-lion) which Lord Vishnu assumed to kill Hiranyakasipu, a rakshasa father of Prahlada, a great devotee. He is also called as Sudarsana Narasimhaswamy. The legend says that Namuchi, a Rakshasa after great penance obtained a boon from Brahma that he would not be killed by anything that is either wet or dry. He began to harass Indra and the Devathas. Encouraged and supported by Lord Vishnu, Indra commenced destroying the army of Rakshasa Namuchi, who did in a cave in Sukshmakaram (small size) giving up his sthulakaram (Physical manifestation). Indra dipped Sudarsanam, the disc of Lord Vishnu in the foam of the ocean and sent it into the cave. Lord Vishnu manifesting himself at the centre of the disc destroyed the Pranavayuvu (life breath) of the Rakshasa with the fire of his exhalation. He thus got the name of Sudarsana Narasimha. The blood that flowed from the body of the Rakshasa seemed to have formed into a pool at the foot of the hill which is known hill. The Devathas themselves were unable to withstand the fire of the anger of the Lord and they prayed for appeasement. The Lord took amrutam (nectar) and cooled down. It was in Krithayugam. The Lord said that he would be satisfied with ghee in Threthayugam, with milk in Dwaparayugam and with panakam(Jaggery water) in Kaliyugam. Hence the Lord is called in Kaliyugam as Panakala Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy.

Story in Threthayugam In Threthayugam, the second of the four yugas, people who enjoyed in heaven as a result of their good deeds in the world are most unhappy to return to this world (when once the fruits of good deeds are exhausted, the soul has to come back to the world). They prayed Indra, the Lord of heaven to save them from the impending fate. Indra advised them to spend their time in the world at Mangalagiri to attain heaven again. In Krithayugam, the first of the four yugas when the sinners were few, Yamadharmaraja, the Lord of hell advised them to wash off their sins by doing penance at Mangalagiri. Mangalagiri is in existence from the beginning of the Universe with the names Anjanadri in Krithayugam, Thotadri in Threthayugam, Mangaladri and Mukthyadri in Dwaparayugam and Mangalagiri in Kaliyugam affording salvation to sinners also. In Krithayugam, Vaikhanasa Maharshi worshipped the Lord and his idol is worshipped even today in the temple. It is also believed that Lord Rama while departing for Vaikuntam after completing his mission in that incarnation advised Anjaneya to stay at Mangalagiri and after obtaining his blessings to remain in this world for ever. Anjaneya took his adobe at Mangalagiri as Kshetrapalaka.

39

Panakala Narasimha Swamy - God Who Drinks Panakam It is said that here, god is self-existent. In the temple, there will be no statue of the god, but there is only mouth, widely opened to 15 cms. The mouth is covered by metal face of the god. The temple will be opened till afternoon only, with the belief that devatas will perform pujas in the night. The God takes jaggery water as offering by a conch. The Jaggery water is actually poured into the mouth of the Lord, a gargling sound is clearly audible as if the Lord is actually drinking it and the sound becomes shriller and shriller as and when the Lord is drinking. The sound will come to a stop after sometime and the balance of the jaggery water is thrown out. This phenomenon happens not once in a day but is a recurring feature during the course of the day as and when devotees offer panakam (jaggery water). It will be interesting to note that even a single ant is not traceable near the Lord nor around the temple in spite of the offering of so much jaggery water. As the offering of the panakam to the Lord is peculiar, the Lord here is called panakala Narasimhaswamy. There is a legend about the offering of the panakam (jaggery water) to the Lord. It is said that the hill was once a volcano. Sugar or jaggery water, it is said, neutralizes sulphur compounds found in a volcano and prevents a volcanic eruption. Behind the temple there is the temple of Sri Lakshmi, to the west of which there is a natural cave. It is believed that it will lead to Undavalli caves on the banks of the Krishna river and the sages used to go to take bath in Krishna River. Now, the cave is very dark and the way could not be seen. We can reach the temple through steps-way on foot and also by roadway. The steps to the temple were constructed by Sri Channapragada Balarama Dasu in 1890. In 2004, ghat road had been constructed through which the pilgrims can reach the temple easily.

Laxmi Narasimha Swamy Temple At the foot of the hill, there is another temple whose origin is traced to the time of Yudhishtira,

40

the eldest of the pandavas. Yudhishtira is said to be the founder of the chief image of this temple and the deity here is called Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy. In Vijayawada itself, which is 8 miles from Mangalagiri there is a hill called Indrakeeladri in which Arjuna is said to have done tapascharya (penance) in order to obtain the weapon Pasupata from Lord Siva. About 200 years back Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu who ruled from Amaravati as his capital constructed a stupendous gopuram (tower) on the eastern gate of the Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy. It is one of the highest gopurams in South India and only one of its type in this part of India. It is 153ft. in height and 49 feet wide with 11 storeys, and gates facing east and west. This great and imposing tower dwarfs the central shrine. The devoted patience of thousands of skilled craftsmen and the labour of many more apprentices which had gone into this great structure is a testimony to the religious fervour which characterized the builder. After constructing the gopuram, it was leaning towards one direction. The Kancheepuram Architects suggested to dig a tank opposite to the tower. After digging the tank, it is said that, the tower became straight.

The Image of the Lord in the form of Narasimha (man-lion) and that of Lakshmi Devi to his left are of stone. The garland of the Lord with 108 saligramams is of special significance here. Dakshanavrutha Sankham, a special conch believed to be one that was used by Lord Krishna and resented by the Maharaja Sarfoji of Tanjore, is one more possession of significance of the Lord. There is also an ancient ratha (temple car) belonging to the temple with ornamental wood carvings depicting the scenes from the great epics of Bharata, Bhagavatha and Ramayana. Thimmaraju Devaraju a military chieftain of the Vijayanagar rulers improved this temple. He had constructed prakarams (compound walls), mandapas, gopurams (towers), five images of Lord Bhairava, a festival chariot, ten varieties of courts for annual ceremonies, flower gardens lakes and tanks. He had also installed utsava vigrahas in the temple (metal images intended for being taken out in procession). To the north of the temple there is a temple of Sri Rajyalakshmi to the south that of Rama with Sita and Lakshmana and to the west vahanasala (the store house for the vehicles of which the golden garudavahanam, the silver Hanumanthavahanam and ponnavahanam are noteworthy). The Lakshmi narayana temple and the Anjaneya Mandiram in Pedda Bazar are the other places of worship in the town.

Gandalayam On the top of the hill, there is no deity for the god. There is only facility to put a deepam. If anyone gets miseries, then they go there, lamp the deepam by cow ghee, and they lose the miseries. That lamp is visible from many villages.

Festivals Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Brahmothsavam is very important annual festival. It is believed that the celebration was inaugurated by Dharmaraja at the behest of Lord Krishna. Pradyumna, the son of Lord Krishna, reqested his father to celebrate his birthday annualy for a sapthaham (seven days) from Phalguna Suddha Sapthami. Lord Krishna

41

entrusted this work to Dharmaraja, the eldest of the pandavas who has the successor to the throne at Hasthinapura. At present the festival is celebrated for 11 days commencing from phalguna sudda shasti (february - march). One day before Phalguna Suddha Purnima i.e. on Chaturdasi, here the marriage of Santha Narasimha Swamy, and Sridevi and Bhoodevi will be celebrated. They follow Agama sastra in this celebration. Before the marriage, Chenchus celebrate on the occassion of Narasimha swamy marrying their daughter Chenchu Lakshmi. On that day night, Swamy comes by Sesha Vahanam and participate in Eduru Kola. The next day after the marriage is Purnima, on which the Holi festival is celebrated by indians. The same day, here, people celebrate Tirunalla, and about 1,00,000 people, local and from distant places congregate. On a big chariat, the Lord will go on procession and hundreds of devotees will pull this cart with fervour and enthusiasm. Srirama Navami, Hanumajayanthi, Narasimhajayanthi, Vaikunta Ekadasi, and Mahasivarathri are other festivals which are celebrated here on a large scale. On Mahasivarathri, Lord will go on procession on a small chariot.

Ksheera Vruksham (The milk tree) Ksheera vruksham (the milk tree) on the Mangalagiri hill is of great attraction particularly to the woman. The legend goes to say that king Sasibandi was advised by Narada to visit pilgrimages. King left the kingdom, and his queen, and started visiting pilgrimages. The queen came to know about this, and grew furious and cursed Narada to become a Ksheera vruksham on the hill within the easy reach of devotees, blessing women at its very sight, with property, children and washing off the sins they committed out of ignorance or oversight, for having ill-advised her husband to desert her and take to penance. Narada took this not as a curse but as a boon as it meant service to humanity, blessed the queen with happy life with her husband and a thousand children. Even today the milk tree is on the Mangalagiri hill and throughout the year thousands of women visit and worship the tree for begetting children. There is a legend connected with the making of the procession idols of the temple. A repated goldsmith was appointed to make the procession images of the Lord. In spite of all his skill and care, the panchalohas (five metals) melted together in a huge crucible and smeared over the images to form a brilliant coating, the metals used to separate themselves and this bitter disappointment continued day after day. He began the process of burning one day after praying for the Lord's grace and heared a voice that success in his work required human sacrifice. Just then his son rushed to him and requested the father for water to quench his great thirst. He lifted his affectionate son and threw him into the molten mixture of the five metals and the body disappeared in no time. The amalgam was cast and beautiful icons of the Lord were then completed. After completing the work, the goldsmith thought about his son and called out in agony come my son and I will give you water to quench your thirst. It is believed that the body jumped out of the image and stood before his father.

PANCHAKANYA 1. INTRODUCTION Panchakanya (पञ्चकन्या, pañcakanyā) is a group of five iconic heroines of Hindu epics, extolled in a hymn and whose names are believed to dispel sin when recited. They are Ahalya, Draupadi, Sita or Kunti, Tara and Mandodari. Ahalya, Tara, Mandodari and Sita are from the epic Ramayana; while Draupadi and Kunti are from the Mahabharata. The panchakanya are venerated as ideal women and chaste wives in one view. Their association with more than one man and breaking of traditions in some cases are prescribed as not to be followed by others. 2 HYMN The well-known Sanskrit hymn that defines the Panchakanys runs: Sanskrit transliteration ahalyā draupadī sītā tārā mandodarī tathā । pañcakanyāḥ smarennityaṃ mahāpātakanāśinīḥ ॥ English translation Ahalya, Draupadi, Sita, Tara and Mandodari One should forever remember the panchakanya who are the destroyers of great sins A variant replaces Sita with Kunti: Sanskrit transliteration ahalyā draupadī kuṃtī tārā mandodarī tathā । pañcakanyāḥ smarennityaṃ mahāpātakanāśinīm ॥ My note- There was a query regarding the variant recently in the groups. Orthodox Hindus, especially Hindu wives, remember the Panchakanya in this daily morning prayer. Their names are extolled and the prayer is pratah smaraniya, prescribed to be recited in the early hours of the morning. The panchakanya literally means five kanyas. Kanya may be translated as girl, daughter, maiden or virgin. Though all being married, the choice of the word kanya, not nari (woman) or sati (chaste wife), seems interesting to scholar Pradip Bhattacharya. 3 From the Ramayana The kanyas, Ahalya, Tara and Mandodari appear in the Hindu epic Ramayana. Sita, its heroine, is sometimes included in the panchakanya list. 3a Ahalya

45 Ahalya, also known as Ahilya, is the wife of the sage Gautama. Ahalya is often regarded as the leader of the panchkanya due to the "nobility of her character, her extraordinary beauty and the fact of her being chronologically the first kanya". Ahalya is often described to be created by the god Brahma as the most beautiful woman in the entire universe, but also sometimes as an earthy princess of the Lunar Dynasty. Ahalya was placed in the care of Gautama, until she gained puberty and was finally married to the elderly sage. The king of the gods, Indra, was infatuated with her beauty and comes disguised as Gautama, when the sage was away, and requests or orders sexual intercourse. In the Ramayana (the earliest full narrative of the tale), Ahalya sees through his disguise, but still complies out of "curiosity". In later versions, Ahalya falls prey to Indra's trickery and does not recognize him . In all narratives, Ahalya and Indra are cursed by Gautama. Although early texts describe how Ahalya must atone by undergoing severe penance while remaining invisible to the world and how she is purified by offering Rama - an avatar of the god Vishnu and hero of the Ramayana - hospitality, in the popular retelling developed over time, Ahalya is cursed to become a stone and regains her human form after she is brushed by Rama's foot. Some versions also mention that she was turned into a dry stream and that she would be condoned of her guilt when eventually the stream starts flowing and joins the river Gautami (Godavari). Indra was cursed to be castrated or be covered by a thousand vulvae that ultimately turn into a thousand eyes.

3b Mandodari Mandodari is the queen consort of Ravana, the Rakshasa (demon) king of Lanka. The Hindu epics describe her as beautiful, pious, and righteous. Mandodari is the daughter of MAYASURA, the King of the Asuras (demons), and the apsara (celestial nymph) HEMA. Some tales narrate how an apsara called Madhura was cursed to become a frog and imprisoned in a well for 12 years, after which regains her beauty or a frog, blessed to a beautiful maiden; in both cases, she is adopted by Mayasura as his daughter Mandodari. Ravana comes to the house of Mayasura and falls in love with Mandodari and then marries her. Mandodari bears him three sons: Meghanada (Indrajit), Atikaya, and Akshayakumara. According to some Ramayana adaptations, Mandodari is also the mother of Rama's wife Sita, who is infamously kidnapped by Ravana. Despite her husband's faults, Mandodari loves him and advises him to follow the path of righteousness. Mandodari repeatedly advises Ravana to return Sita to Rama, but her advice falls on deaf ears. Her love and loyalty to Ravana are praised in the Ramayana. Different versions of the Ramayana record her ill-treatment at the hands of Rama's monkey generals. Some versions say they humiliate her, while disturbing a sacrifice by Ravana, while others narrate how they destroy her chastity, which protects Ravana's life. Hanuman tricks her into disclosing the location of a magical arrow which Rama uses to kill Ravana. After Ravana's death, Vibhishana—Ravana's younger brother who joins forces with Rama and is responsible for Ravana's death—marries Mandodari on the advice of Rama. In some versions, Mandodari curses Sita that Rama would abandon her. 4 From the Mahabharata The Hindu epic Mahabharata features the kanya Draupadi and Kunti, sometimes included in the panchakanya.

46 4a Draupadi Draupadi is the heroine of the Mahabharata. She is the common wife of the five Pandava brothers and queen of Hastinapur, in their reign. Born from a fire-sacrifice of king of Panchala - Drupada, Draupadi was prophesied to lead to the end of Drona and the Kauravas. Though the middle Pandava Arjuna - disguised as a brahmin - wins her in her swayamvara, Draupadi is compelled to marry all the five brothers on command of her mother-in-law Kunti. She insults the Kaurava general Karna in the swayamvara and laughs at Duryodhana - the leader of the Kauravas - when he falls in her Pandava palace at Indraprastha. She mothers five sons from each of the Pandavas, regaining her virginity after every union. The Kauravas take their revenge when the eldest Pandava Yudhisthira loses her to Kauravas in a game of dice. The Kaurava Dushasana tries to disrobe her in the royal court, however divine intervention saves her dignity by making her wrapped cloth infinite in length. Draupadi pledges to keep her hair untied till they were drenched by Dushasana's blood and mocks her husbands and all present in the court. The Pandavas and Draupadi finally accept 13-year exile for losing the game. While in exile in the forest, her second husband Bhima rescued her from various demons and Jayadratha, who abducted her. SHE ALSO INSTRUCTED KRISHNA'S QUEEN SATYABHAMA ON THE DUTIES OF A WIFE. In the 13th year of exile, Draupadi and her husbands spent life incognito in Virata's court. She served as the maid of the queen and is harassed by the queen's brother Kichaka, who she desires to be killed by Bhima. After life in exile, a war breaks between the Kauravas and Pandavas, in which the Kauravas are slain and her insult avenged, but DRAUPADI ALSO LOSES HER FATHER, BROTHERS AND SONS. Yudhisthira became the emperor of Hastinapur with Draupadi as the chief consort. At the end of their lives, Draupadi and her husbands set off to the Himalayas to walk to heaven; but Draupadi falls in the middle, as she loved Arjuna more than her other husbands. She is venerated as a village goddess and described at times an avatar of the fierce goddess Kali or the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. 4b Kunti Kunti is the queen of Pandu, the king of Hastinapur and mother of the three eldest Pandavas. Kunti was daughter of the Yadava king Shurasena and was adopted by the childless Kuntibhoja, king of Kunti Kingdom. By her service, she propitiated the sage Durvasa, who granted her a mantra by which she could summon a god and have a child by him. She recklessly tests the boon and invites the Sun-god Surya, who grants a son named Karna, who she abandons. In due course of time, Pandu wins Kunti in her syamvara. Pandu abdicates after being cursed by a sage that union with a woman will result in his death. At Pandu's behest, Kunti uses Durvasa's boon to mother Yudhishtira, from the god Dharma, then Bhima from the god Vayu, and thirdly Arjuna, from the god Indra. Her co-wife Madri bears the twins Nakula and Sahadeva, from the Asvins. After the death of Pandu, Madri being cause of Pandu's death commits sati on same pyre while Kunti returns to Hastinapur and takes care of the five Pandavas. Kunti befriends Vidura, the stepbrother of Pandu and the advisor of the king. When Kauravas, the princes of Hastinapur and the cousins of the Pandavas, try to kill Kunti and her sons, however they escape. She prevents Bhima from killing the demoness Hidimbi and advices him to marry her and beget a son, Ghatotkacha. She instructs her children to take care of the common people and orders Bhima to kill the demon Bakasura. When Arjuna wins Draupadi, Kunti instructs the brothers to share the prize. Kunti and the Pandavas return to Hastinapur. When Pandavas are sent to 12-year exile when defeated in a game of dice by the Kauravas, Kunti stays in Vidura's refuge. When an epic war between the Pandavas and Kauaravas is to ensue, Kunti reveals to Karna - now a Kaurava general - about being his mother and gets him

47 to promise her that he will not kill any other Pandava, except Arjuna. After the war, in which the Kauravas and Karna were killed, Kunti with the parents of the Kauravas left for the forest and spent rest of her life in prayer. She was killed in a forest fire and attained heaven. 5 Common features All kanyas lack mothers in their life. Ahalya, Tara, Mandodari, Sita and Draupadi have supernatural births, while KUNTI IS ADOPTED AT BIRTH AND SEPARATED FROM A MOTHER. Though all of the kanyas are described as mothers, except Kunti, no kanya's motherhood is emphasized in their tales. Another common element is the theme of loss in their legends. Ahalya is cursed and abandoned by her family. Tara loses her husband, Draupadi her sons and Mandodari her husband, sons and kin in war. Each of them suffers a tragedy and used by men, but battles on with life and society. They are considered by scholar Pradip Bhattacharya as victims of patriarchal myth-making. A free-spirited Ahalya is punished for her adultery. Druapadi, who challenges and mocks even her husbands, has her dignity repeatedly violated by men. The Mahari dance tradition equates the panchakanya with the five elements. Ahalya, Draupadi, Kunti, Tara and Mandodari represent water, fire, earth, wind and ether respectively. In similar analogy, writer Vimla Patil associates Ahalya, Draupadi, Sita, Tara and Mandodari with wind, fire, earth, ether and water respectively. 6 Assessment and remembrance Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore wrote a collection of poems titled "Pancha Kanya" with themes of episodes from mythology of the panchakanya. The tales of the panchakanya remain popular motifs in the Mahari dance tradition of Odisha. The panchakanya are regarded by one view as ideal women. George M. Williams remarks, "They are not perfect but they fulfil their dharma (duty) as mothers, sisters, wives and occasionally leaders in their own right." Another view considers them exemplary chaste women or mahasatis ("great chaste women") as per the Mahari dance tradition, and worthy as an ideal for "displaying some outstanding quality". Another view does not regard the panchakanya as ideal women who should be emulated.[21] Bhattacharya, author of Panch-Kanya: The Five Virgins of Indian Epics contrasts the panchakanya with the five satis enlisted in another traditional prayer: Sati, Sita, Savitri, Damayanti and Arundhati. He rhetorically asks, "Are then Ahalya, Draupadi, Kunti, Tara, and Mandodari not chaste wives because each has 'known' a man, or more than one, other than her husband?" Women who suffered most in their lives and who had followed the dictate and regulations prescribed in the scriptures for women were considered. They, as prescribed in the Manu Smirti, the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics, were considered as the Five ideal Woman, all married.

The importance of Srimadh Bagawatham: The Bagawatha Puranam brings us closer to Lord Krishna by reviving our devotion for Him. We not only feel love for Him but we also gain knowledge about Him and develop determination to follow the prescribed devotional practices to attain Him. Sage Naradar once met a young maiden trying to revive two old men on the banks of River Yamuna. The sage went to help the woman. ‘My name is Bakthi,’ said the woman. ‘These are my sons Gnanam and vairagyam.’ The sage was surprised to see that her sons looked older compared to her. ‘I was born in Tamil Nadu and as I travelled with my sons from Tamil Nadu to Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat, we started to mature as we grew older. Finally we arrived at the banks of River Yamuna and here at Vrindavan my sons fell down from exhaustion. I was able to revive myself and the waters of the river turned me in to a young woman but I am unable to revive my sons. Originally we used to be a team of four members. We were sent by Lord from Sri Vaikuntham. I had a friend called Mukthi. I and my sons along with Mukthi stayed here throughout Krita, Treta and Dwapara Yugam. As soon as Kali Yugam arrived, Mukthi went back to Sri Vaikuntham promising to return if I called for her. Soon, my sons Gnanam and Vairagyam fell down as well.’

49 Bakthi’s narration shows us that if Bakthi is present, we will easily get Mukthi. Knowledge (Gnanam) and Vairagyam (determination) are difficult to perform in Kali Yugam. Even in Kali Yugam, it is very easy for people to do Bakthi. Many people go to temples during utsavam but very few people go to attend lectures in order to gain knowledge or follow prescribed practices like Ekadashi fast with determination.

Sage Naradar vowed to help Bakthi. At that moment an akashvani was heard which instructed Sage narada to do that good deed which will revive the two men. The voice did not specify which deed must be performed. As Sage Narada, stood on the banks of river Yamuna trying to figure out the deed that must be performed, the Sanakathi Munivars arrived to instruct Sage Narada. They asked the sage to read Srimadh Bagawatham in seven days in order to revive Gnanam and Vairagyam. They then narrated the following story to show the importance of Srimadh Bagawatham. The story will be continued in the next post. Continued On: Continued From: http://thoughtsonsanathanadharma.blogspot.ca/2013/04/srimadh-bagawathambakthi-gnanam-and.html

Once, in a city on the banks of River Tungabadhra lived a Vedic scholar called Atmadeva. He was a very pious man but his wife Dundhuli was always fuelled by materialistic desires. The couple was wealthy but they did not have any children. One day, Atmadeva decided to go to the forest to seek a rishi to bless him and his wife with a child. Atmadeva met a rishi in the forest. ‘What do you require?’ enquired the sage pleased with Atnadeva’s devotion. ‘I am very unlucky. If I feed a cow it never gives milk, if I plant seeds they never germinate, if I buy fruits they rot even before I reach my home. I feel my life would be better if I had a son. Please bless me and my wife with a son,’ begged Atmadeva.

50 The rishi looked at Atmadeva with compassion. He said, ‘you are better off without any children. I can see that you will undergo great sufferings if you have a son. Go home and rest happily. Don’t ask for a son.’ Atmadeva refused to listen to the rishi and kept begging the rishi to bless him. ‘I can see with the help of my powers that for the past seven lives you had no children and you are not destined to have children in the next seven lives either. Don’t seek that which you cannot have. Be happy with what you have. You cannot have a good child even if you perform putrakameshti yagam.’ said the sage. Even after listening to the sage, Atmadevar was adamant. ‘Alas,’ said the rishi, ‘I can never prevent fate. If it is fated that you should suffer because of your son, who am I to prevent it?’ So syaing the rishi produced a fruit. ‘Give this fruit to your wife and you will soon have a son.’ Atmadeva returned home with joy and handed over the fruit to his wife. He then left on a tour. Dhundhuli was worried that she will lose her beauty if she became pregnant. She approached her sister who was visiting her. The sister was pregnant. Dhundhuli made a pact with her sister to get her child in exchange for a portion of property to be given to the sister. She then fed their cow with the fruit. In due course, the sister handed over her son after lying to her inlaws that the child had died prematurely. Dhundhuli showed the child as their son when Atmadeva returned home; the boy was named as Dhundhukari. In the meantime, the cow gave birth to a human child but with ears like a cow and he was named as Gokarnan. Atmadeva soon came to know abot his wife’s plot. Dhundhukari grew up in to an evil minded young man. Gokarnan on the other hand became a great scholar. Dhundukari started to spend his time with bad company. He soon learned to gamble, spend time with unscrupulous women and started to come home intoxicated. Atmadevar tried to discipline him but Dhundhukari beat Atmadevar mercilessly. Atmadevar ran out of the house and found Gokarnan reading Bhagawatha Puranam under a tree. ‘Gokarna save me from Dhundhukari!’ he cried. ‘My son is hitting me!’ ‘Who is whose son?’ asked Gokarnan. ‘Our body will definitely perish and all relationships we have are experienced because of blood ties. Dhundhukari is teaching you that it is futile to keep so much love

51 and affection on a relationship which will eventually perish. Instead, place your love and affection on Lord Krishna. He will fulfill your needs and be your son.’ Atmadevar understood Gokarnan’s words. He developed detachment for worldly life and retired to the forest where he passed away peacefully. Dhundhukari soon killed Dhundhuli for the inheritance. He asked the women he was spending time with to move in with him. The women plotted against him. They killed him and took all his moveable property and ran away. The women burried his body in the back yard; as no one performed Dhundukari’s last rites on time and as he had been very bad in life, Dhundhukari became a ghost. Gokarnan had left home on a pilgrimage prior to Dhundhukari’s death. One day while at Gaya, he met some people from his town. From them he came to know that his foster brother Dhundhukari had died. Taking pity on Dhundhukari’s soul, Gokarnan went to perform shradham for Dhundhukari at Gaya.Gaya Shradham has the ability to deliver those souls who met with an accident, those who were sinners or those who died very young to good worlds. That night, someone knocked on the door of Gokarnan’s house. ‘Who is there?’ asked Gokarnan surprised to see that no one was standing outside. ‘It is I, Dhundhukari in the form of a spirit.’ ‘I had performed shradham at Gaya for you; why are you still here?’ asked Gokarnan without being afraid of the ghost. ‘I have accumulated many sins that even if you perform 100 Gaya Shradhams, I won’t be freed,’ replied Dhundhukari. ‘But please find some other way to help me; you are the only tie I have in the mortal world.’ Gokarnan consulted with other scholars and decided to read Srimadh Bagawatham in seven days. Many people gathered to hear Gokarnan read Srimadh Bagawatham. Dhundhukari’s spirit entered a

52 bamboo shoot with seven eyes. As Gokarnan completed reading the text per the prescribed procedure every day, one of the eyes of the bamboo shoot exploded. Thus on the seventh day, Dhundhukari was freed and went to the right abode. Beautiful Vishnu dhutas appeared before Gokarnan and they let Gokarnan watch them take a handsome man in the pushpaka vimanam. ‘Who are you and who is this handsome young man?’ asked Gokarnan. ‘We are Vishnudhutas and this young man was Dhundhukari. We are taking him to Sri Vaikuntham.’ ‘I don’t know how to repay the debt I owe to you,’ said Dhundhukari to Gokarnan. ‘I only wanted relief from my ghostly existence while you have helped me to get relief from this samsaric existence itself!’ ‘I am very happy that Dhundhukari has been freed from samsara but please clarify my doubts; why did Dhundhukari obtain Moksham while all the other people gathered here haven’t? Why haven’t I obtained moksham for chanting Srimadh Bagawatham either?’ asked Gokarnan. ‘Dhundhukari listened to Srimadh Bagawatham sincerely with real interest. Thus he has obtained moksham. Everyone gathered here along with you are granted the same as well but Dhundhukari has obtained moksham immediately since he is already dead while the rest of you have to wait for your death before you can come to Moksham.’ so saying the messengers of Lord Vishnu escorted Dhundhukari to Sri Vaikuntham. Everyone marvelled that a great sinner like Dhundhukari had been granted salvation because he listened to Srimadh Bagawatham in seven days. Such is the powers of Srimadh bagawatham.

Ivargal Tiruvaakku. Disciple of a rare calibre Ramanuja’s Brahmasutra Bashya has come to be accepted as Ramanuja Darsana since it has established Visishtadvaita philosophy on a firm footing for posterity. But Ramanuja as acharya openly attributed the success of this effort to his disciple Kooresa who laboured along with him to complete the text, said Sri L. Sampathkumar in a discourse. Ramanuja knew that if he had access to the ancient document Bodayana Vritti, a rare exegetical treatise on Vyasa’s Brahmasutra that incorporates the insights of great thinkers of the past, it would make his Bashya indisputable. Ramanuja learnt that this text was in the royal library in a state in Kashmir. Ramanuja and Kooresa undertook the arduous journey to Kashmir and they got permission from the local king to access the archives in the royal library. But the pundits in the court were jealous of Ramanuja’s scholarship and did not allow the text to be borrowed. Neither could the acharya take notes or references. He could merely have a look at the text for a brief period. Kooresa had the rare gift of committing to his memory whatever is seen, read or heard which could be recalled without any fault. So when Kooresa read the treatise along with Ramanuja, it was as good as having the entire text in their possession. This revived Ramanuja’s hopes and it was decided that Ramanuja would dictate the contents of the Bashya while Kooresa would write it. Ramanuja gave Kooresa the freedom to correct him if there was a lapse in his interpretation of the text. Kooresa declined this idea since he was a mere disciple and deemed his acharya as infallible. How could he correct his acharya on any ground? It was agreed that he would merely stop writing if there was any slip and this happened when Ramanuja was engaged in the discussion of the Atma swaroopa. Ramanuja walked out in anger and later realised his mistake and apologised. But Kooresa’s sishya-bhava could not brook this gesture of the acharya. He prostrated at Ramanuja’s feet in the spirit of respect and total surrender and the work was completed.
