Work is part-time, life is full-time...but when work doesn’t feel like work, and when work becomes a crucial and imperative part of your life, perhaps then it is enjoyment of work and life combined...? 30 years since I last visited Vancouver and I was met with open arms...into Immigration. After spending two hours being infamously interrogated the ‘Canadian way’, I finally stepped foot into beautiful British Columbia and was greeted by the smell of Japa-dogs and a refreshing summer air. My next ten days would be filled with travels to Metrotown, Deep Cove, Richmond, Steveston, Robson Street, Stanley Park, Gastown, Victoria...and the list goes on. Vancouver truly is a beautiful city and it gave me something I’ll never forget- allergies! The last few days of my trip were spent at home with tissue paper constantly within hands reach. Euphemistically speaking, I didn’t think I was young enough to get allergies, but I’m told it’s not an age thing. On the positive side, I had time to organize all the photos I took, all of which were my humble attempts at capturing the amazing scenery and multi-faceted sides of Vancouver. One can say that the camera never leaves my hand, as if I find security and comfort behind the lens. However, I see photography as being my playground- it is a portal for my thoughts and emotions. People write diaries, I just shoot mine. -Joshua Lin-

About Ina Jang In person, Ina embodies a simplicity and elegance that is also beautifully translated into her work. Since a young age, Ina has travelled to many different cities around the world including New York City and Tokyo; though her innate and quiet demure is somewhat opposing to the hostile and uninviting aura of the big cities. Ina does not refute her somewhat anti-social personality and her exhaustion from living in unfamiliar environments. Thus, Ina finds freedom and release through her work. Having a strong background in fashion photography, Ina’s work was featured on the front page of Foam Magazine. Ever since, Ina’s career has catapulted and she has quickly become one of the most anticipated new photographers in New York City.
her own sister, but when she moved to New York she had to seek out new subjects for her camera. Ina says that she likes to photograph people, but somehow, the strangers she photographs on the streets lack a familiarity and relatable emotion that she finds in her own sister. Thus in Ina’s photos, human facial features are usually removed, which make it easier for her to believe that they are anybody she wishes them to be. Ina’s work appears clean and fresh upon first glance, however it is deeper in meaning you will find its embodiment of indescribable colors and focal points create complexity and story.
About Photography and Fashion
Disconnection Can Produce Great Work
Ina has many times been invited to publish her work in fashion magazine, and has also attended the “Hyeres International Festival of Fashion and Photography” in France.
During her creative processes and photoshoots, Ina oftentimes find it difficult to find the right setting for a shoot. She used to walk around Brooklyn, peering into abandoned buildings, car parks, and ruins, but quickly realized that her photos somehow lost meaning; Ina realized that she should actually be placing more focus on the main theme or subject of her photo. It is then that Ina started experimenting with the idea of using ‘paper’ as a prop. Before each shoot she’d draw an outline or sketch, and then use that sketch as a reference point for her photo. Ina says that this way “it’s a practical method of creating a relationship with the actual object of the shoot”.
Ina does not try to categorize or give specific meaning to her photos; to her it may be artistic, it may be high fashion, it may be nothing. Rather, Ina likes to give the power to the audience and let them decide on what they feel. Ina used to view photography as part of her life, but now she recognizes it as more of her job. Before she picks up her camera, there’s so much thought and planning that precedes it, which sometimes makes her feel like she’s thinking too much about things. One of her wishes is to return to how she used to be and to just take photos without any premeditated thought or planning.
Having lived alone for a long time, Ina’s inspiration comes from times of isolation and from things around her. For a period of time, Ina was obsessed with shooting
As a fashion addict her-self, Ina enjoys black colors and simple designs. She currently uses Mamiya 7, Nikon Fm2, and Canon 5DII cameras.

Cultural Mix of Fashion x Art The fashion industry always seems to be ahead of the pack; its success to reflect on current social norms, or rather to influence norms, comes from its ability to collect a plethora of information from all aspects of human culture and translate that into aesthetically pleasing garments for wearing. The traditional art genre is often the source of fashion inspiration and what started as an innovative collaboration between Louis Vuitton and contemporary Japanese artist Murakami Takashi, has now created a trend within the industry where international luxury brands are teaming up with the fine arts to push the boundaries of fashion creativity. I n 2 0 1 1 , LV M H g r o u p a n n o u n c e d i t s collaboration with German contemporary artist Anselm Reyle to create a series of luxury designs for Christian Dior. Anselm Reyle studied at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design and teaches drawing and painting at the University of Hamburg. Reyle’s work has been showcased in major cities and countries around the world, including Berlin, Spain, Paris, New York, Denmark, and Tokyo. Reyle is one of Germany’s most coveted abstract and formalist artists of today, Combined with his profound understanding of modern art genres, his work has become extremely favored by heavyweight art collectors such as Francois Pinault (Christie’s/PPR), Damien Hirst, and Charles Saatchi.
Artistic Clues Within the Everyday Life Reyle’s work is full of modern style and color, yet he is actually clueless about fashion. Reyle’s ability, however, to visualize the artistic elements within every-day objects gives life and excitement to non-traditional art materials such as PVC-foils, acrylic, neon parts, and mirrors. It is his fascination with everyday materials that has allowed Reyle to establish a distinct artistic style of his own and gain popularity amongst gallery owners and art collectors.
Impression of Asian Culture Reyle is quite familiar with Asia as a lot of his students back in Germany are Asian. He eats Chinese food once or twice week, and has vacationed in Korea and India in the past. Besides truly feeling a sense of culture shock in Mumbai, Reyle says that his first trip to Taiwan had been full of fascination and new discoveries. Taiwan’s night markets, neon lights, and letters that he didn’t understand, were actually abstract inspirations for him and explosively stimulated his senses. Artistically, Reyle says that he is a fan of Japanese artist Murakami Takashi as there is this unique worldly-view present in Takashi’s work that is evidently drawn from Japanese culture and its influences.

Looking Good Any-time, Any-where The essence of a true fashionista is a ready-to-go, glamorous attitude. Female empowerment through individual style and physical confidence should never be regarded as derogatory nor a betrayal of a woman’s intelligence. Looks, brains, and FUN! We can have it all. Mosaic of Cultures? Or Partying It Up Canadian-style? Vancouver-based, Taiwanese photographer Jackson Redflash grew up being surrounded by different ethnicities and cultures. The multiculturalism of Vancouver is what truly makes the city a breeding ground for fresh ideas and a convergence of global trends. Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, African-American, European‌ no matter the race, no matter the color, the perfect imagery is more than just aesthetic beauty but a portrayal of positive thought and human harmony. Vancouver truly is a gem.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is perhaps the perfect portrayal of the childhood dreamer and the epitome of creativity and wonder.
A kaleidoscope of colors have often come to symbolize a plethora of ideas and a representation of hope, fun, and a glamorously wild imagination.
Stepping out of the box and criss-crossing artistic elements with the so-called mainstream has always been the backbone and spirit of Abook. To put on your own dreamcoat each day and everyday, is perhaps the most persistent step you can take to safeguard your creativity, originality and individuality.

Colasa was born in Taiwan and majored in art related fields throughout his academic career. After graduating from highschool, Colasa fell in love with skateboarding and graffiti. At the time, street culture or subculture was still very new to Taiwan, and so he had to look towards the internet to find anything related to graffiti art. After university, Colasa found a job working in a tattoo parlour and has continued to master his craft as a professional artist ever since. “When I started doing stencil graffiti, I was experimenting with a variety of different colors. However I’ve naturally gravitated towards using just black and white. I guess it’s sort of my way to showcase my own unique style. Audiences tend to think that my work is very dark and full of violence, but what I truly want to express is actually the lightness after dark.” In the past, Colasa’s work tend to focus on technique and objective meaning. However, he now tries to bring excitement to his work and sees his pieces as coming truly from the heart.

Photography, art, and design has always been the love and interest of “The HF Collection” creator Karen Turng. Natural Sense of Beauty With a major in Art and Design and a minor in Western Art History, American-Taiwanese designer Karen Turng has been deeply influenced by her lategrandfather who was a photographer. From design to having a keen eye for beauty, Karen remains committed to her own thoughts and ideas. Karen says, “in university I took a class on Typography. It has allowed me to develop an awareness on font and spacing, and how it really affects style and perception. If you use the wrong font, something formal can look too playful.” In her student years, Karen’s art professors would ask students to critique each others’ work and in doing so different angles and viewpoints can be brought out on the table. Even now Karen is honest and blunt about what she sees as beautiful and what she sees as ugly. Karen says, “I always wonder why store signages in Taiwan are so irregular and casual. There should be an uniformity or aesthetic consideration involved. Looking at different store signs each with varying fonts and sizes can be really distressing.” “Photography is the only other medium besides written word that can truly express the beauty which exudes from an inner level” The HF Collection was inspired by Karen’s grandfather who was the founder of Hai Foo Photo Studios 60 years ago. Hai Foo was renowned for being the
go-to studio of famous celebrities and politicians. Karen once promised her late-grandfather that she would create her own jewellery brand so that they can collaborate and truly showcase the art of beauty. “When I was young, I used to flip through my mom’s jewellery boxes and naturally developed this love for accessories. My grandfather was the one to introduce me to photography and so I really wanted to combine the two to fulfill me and my grandfather’s dream.” Ever since highschool, Karen wouldn’t go anywhere without her camera. She loves documenting the everyday things and people around her...especially dogs. Her favorite camera is Leica D-Lux because it’s easy to carry. However, “now I’ve really fallen in love with Instagram and can’t go anywhere without my iPhone”.To Karen, photography is the only other medium besides written word that can truly express the beauty which exudes from an inner level. To Karen, the most important things to her now are her brand and to live life to the fullest while being a wonderful wife, daughter, and granddaughter.

It was ike a sunny field trip set within a Hayao Miyazaki animation, accompanied by rock music and a summer induced theme song. At Wenshan Farm we were fully surrounded by rock n’ roll jams and the green vastness that blanketed us. Simply enjoying the sweat, the weather, and our youth. Aside from people with instruments and those with headphones, there were also many with cameras, ready to document the liveliness and motion all-around. From dusk ‘til dawn. The music went on.
