PASHION meets up with Rachna Malkani, the Creative Director of Native Dubai, founded in 2007, to find out more about the brand which specializes in manufacturing luxury leather goods, including bags in camel leather in the United Arab Emirates.

Q: Are you planning to grow and encourage regional designers to use your expertise and quality production?

A: Yes we do, I’d like to use a quote I once read “Before you become a Leader success is about growing yourself, when you become a leader, success is about helping others grow”. I’d like to believe we are those leaders of UAE’s Luxury leather industry. After having made our dreams into reality, we also want to keep rooting for others to do just the same. Q: You faced many personal challenges. Do you believe that overcoming such difficulties is a vital stepping stone to grow and succeed in life and in business? A: Indeed I do, the resilience that’s needed in today’s competitive, noisy world, doesn’t come from just being a good creative. Living in a world of technology and social media, getting caught up in the game of instant gratification and validation, we have forgotten the art of perseverance, cultivation, nurturing, and patience before harvesting the fruits of our labor. It takes much more than being talented in order to thrive on whatever Goal you set yourself up for in Life. Difficulties and setbacks are what make us learn the value and power of endurance, persistency and commitment to make it through. My Life having been so unconventional and challenging, taught me the lessons that set me up for learning, to never settle for less than what I truly deserve. So yep I’d say welcome Life, what have you got now for me, because I’m always ready ;) Q: What was the biggest challenge you faced setting up your own brand “Native”?

Our challenge was not to give in to the typical approach and take chances with the believe and conviction, in what we had created and achieved against all odds. Q: Your vision/mantra for Native includes defying “brandconsciousness”. How difficult is it to penetrate the luxury market in our region where consumers are driven by international luxury brands?

A: The idea of marketing strategies are ever evolving, keeping in mind the changing needs of the progressive thinking consumer. Our approach was to drop the idea of assuming and take more of an experimental approach. If you don’t give someone a choice, you are assuming they are making a choice, when in reality they have been served the same platter, over and over again Truth starts unfolding when they have a choice, and that’s what exactly we saw, as Native became a brand for inspiring in regional women, setting a unique trend, in the way of expressing themselves, breaking away from the common and overseen style statements. It’s not either or, we realized there is a room for established brands and unique style statement bags, in the same woman’s cupboard. With changing time, as feminine power takes reins of defining her own individuality, Native fits right into that mindset and made its own space, in the hearts of these forward thinking, yet assumed, as traditional women. Q: You use a variety of leathers including camel leather. Do you see a potential growth in using camel leather and a possibility for export of camel leather for international brands?

A: Camel Leather is quite exclusive and definitely deserves more acknowledgement in the Leather fashion category. However it hasn’t been able to take prime spot in our collections, due to certain challenges we face in supply and availability on a regular basis. But with what we have available, we continue to make the best of it, by having the range in our collections all the time, so the costumer always gets the choice to make that call. For export of the leather I would leave it to the Tanneries, to make that as their project to take on, and decide if that’s what they are driven to achieve. Q: What does it take to build and maintain your name in the market?

A: Self belief, talent, quality deliverables consistently, paying attention to your customer’s needs and likes. Never taking your consumer for granted and always listening to what they are saying. Above all always come from a place and intent of delivering with honesty and passion, to offer true lasting value through your products to your customers.
