Myanmar is back in the international spotlight, this time causing business leaders and investors around the region to turn and take notice.

Political changes beginning in mid-2011 have thawed the economic environment in the country of over 50 million. There are many reasons to be optimistic: political prisoners have been released, a cease fire has been announced among various ethnic groups, and as this article goes to print, Aung San Su Kyi prepares to run in the April by-elections.

Economic changes are also occurring, including the review and revision of trade and monetary policies. A new foreign investment policy is under consideration by the government while a new communications law is being studied to open the telecommunications market to foreign investment. The government is cooperating with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to reform its exchange rate policy - a big step to curb inflation.

Tourists and investors now flock to the country, attracted by glimpses of pristine nature and the burgeoning business environment. Demand for travel and accommodation is increasing substantially in Yangon, Myanmar’s economic capital. The Bangkok Post reported recently that there was 60,000

sq m of office space in Yangon last year, with 17,000 sq m added in 2010. In 2011 the total office space across Yangon was only around half of what is available at Bangkok’s Empire Tower, which offers more than 140,000 sq m.

Along with demand, housing and office rental prices have gone up by around 50% in the last 8 months. Demand has pushed up land and property prices as well, which is a boon to owners but an unexpected challenge for those seeking temporary accommodation. In contrast to these rising trends, car prices have dropped significantly due to government relaxation of the vehicle import policy.

Now, statements from foreign investors planning to expand into Myanmar can be seen on the pages of newspapers and magazines around the world. Thai, Chinese, Japanese and South Korean investors are active in the country’s economy. However, US and other economic sanctions mean that Western multinationals are taking a ‘wait and see’ approach.

Myanmar has been painted as the new economic frontier. But while debate

centers on political development and economic statistics, culture and unique customs are also key to understanding the future of doing business in Myanmar.

Even simple customs, such as the format of names, are unique in Myanmar.

But, as in every culture, understanding how to address an acquaintance and the meaning of their name can provide a great advantage during a first encounter.

While Thai surnames have been in use for generations, Myanmar is one of the few countries in the world that has not adopted the family name system.

Myanmar names usually contain between two and four words. A one or five word name is rare but not unheard of. The United Nations Secretary General from 1961–1971 was a Myanmar national named Thant. In Myanmar he was called U Thant (with “U” meaning “Mr”).

Perhaps due to its isolation, even Myanmar’s closest neighbors know little about the country’s intricate culture, but with industries such as property, tourism and manufacturing set to take off, it won’t stay this way for long.

According to Thai tradition, each day of the week is a different color. In Myanmar, the first letter in someone’s name shows the day of the week on which they were born. With no legal precedent for naming, people often choose a name according to the day of birth - the first five letters in the alphabet are for people born on Monday, the next five for Tuesday, and so on.

ตามวัฒนธรรมไทยที่ในแต่ละวันจะมีสีประจ�ำวัน ในประเทศพม่าเราสามารถบอกวันเกิดได้จากอักษรตัวแรกของชื่อ แม้ว่าไม่มีกฏหรือข้อบังคับใดๆในการตั้งชื่อ แต่คนส่วนมากเลือกตั้งชื่อตามวันเกิด เช่น อักษรตัวที่หนึ่งถึงห้าของ พยัญชนะใช้สำ� หรับคนที่เกิดในวันจันทร์ อักษรตัวที่หกถึงสิบใช้สำ� หรับคนที่เกิดในวันอังคาร เป็นต้น

ประเทศพม่าได้กลับมาสู่ความสนใจในเวทีโลกอีกครั้ง และครั้งนี้นักธุรกิจชั้นน�ำและนักลงทุนในภูมิภาคได้ให้ความสนใจเป็นอย่างมาก

ปี พ.ศ. 2554 ย่างกุง้ มีขนาดพืน้ ทีข่ องส�ำนักงาน ทัง้ หมดโดยประมาณเป็น 60,000 ตารางเมตร ซึง่ เทียบเท่ากับขนาดเกือบครึง่ หนึง่ ของอาคาร เอ็มไพร์ทาวเวอร์ในกรุงเทพฯ ทีม่ ขี นาดใหญ่ถงึ 140,000 ตารางเมตร จากความต้องการทีม่ ากขึน้ ของตลาดในระยะช่วง 8 เดือนทีผ่ า่ นมา ส่งผลให้คา่ เช่าห้องพักเพิม่ ขึน้ 40-60% และ ค่าเช่าส�ำนักงานเพิม่ ขึน้ 60-75% ความต้องการของตลาดยังผลักดันให้ราคาทีด่ นิ และทรัพย์สนิ ซึง่ เอือ้ ประโยชน์ให้กบั เจ้าของทีด่ นิ แต่กลับเป็นภาระส�ำหรับผูท้ กี่ ำ� ลังมองหาทีพ่ กั ชั่วคราวเนื่องจากต้องเสียค่าใช้จ่ายเพิ่มขึ้น ในทางตรงกันข้าม ราคารถยนต์กลับลดลงอย่าง รวดเร็วเนือ่ งจากรัฐบาลได้ผอ่ นผันนโยบายใน การน�ำเข้ายานพาหนะ ตอนนี้ เราสามารถพบข่าวมากมายทีพ่ ดู ถึงการ ขยายการลงทุนในประเทศพม่าทัง้ ในหนังสือพิมพ์ และนิตยสารทัว่ โลกทีร่ ายงานว่านักลงทุนชาวไทย จีน ญีป่ นุ่ และเกาหลีใต้ ได้เข้ามามีบทบาทในระบบ เศรษฐกิจของประเทศพม่าแล้ว อย่างไรก็ตาม ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาและประเทศตะวันตกอืน่ ๆ ก�ำลังอยู่ในช่วงรอและจับตาดูประเทศพม่าอยู่ ทัง้ นีเ้ ป็นผลมาจากคว�ำ่ บาตรทางเศรษฐกิจ แม้วา่ ประเทศพม่าถูกมองว่าเป็นเขตเศรษฐกิจ ใหม่ แต่กย็ งั คงมีการถกเถียงถึงเสถียรภาพของ การพัฒนาทางการเมือง และสถิตทิ างเศรษฐกิจ

With the unification of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) now less than three years away, ASEAN countries are preparing for a new, interconnected regional environment. How ready are we for this new reality?

In addition to the opportunities for ASEAN nations, the AEC will undoubtedly raise challenges.

The political, economic and social ties that bind ASEAN all depend on communication. With 10 member states, 11 official country languages, numerous secondary languages and countless dialects, language will be key in helping Thai companies stay competitive in Thailand and regionally.

Companies and organisations working across borders often use English as the universal language of global commerce. It is taught in all Thai schools and offered as core curriculum for self-advancement in many workplaces, including KPMG Thailand.

Thai organisations increasingly realise that English provides a competitive advantage and aids in eradicating barriers to trade, development and cultural relations. The ASEAN SocioCultural Community Blueprint contains

a strategic objective that encourages ASEAN countries to support citizens to become proficient in English. More importantly, it stresses that a qualified and competent labor force would benefit from the promotion of English in the workplace.

In preparation for 2015, the Thai Government has implemented policies to ensure that English is not simply a foreign language but a second language linking us to the rest of the world. Thailand’s Speak English Year 2012 encourages classrooms around the country to use English for one day each week. This policy also affects businesses who now need to set standards for professional employees’ English skills. It’s undoubted there is a practical need for English skills in organisations in order to maintain economic competitiveness come the AEC. English, however, is not the only

language on the AEC agenda.

The roadmap emphasises promotion of the cultures and languages of each nation. For example, a Chulalongkorn University study released in January showed people in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar are interested in studying Thai.

Learning languages is important in an increasingly globalised world, not only for the 2015 deadline. Starting now, generations ahead will be challenged with integrating into a regionally interconnected workforce and society.

Being multilingual, and comfortable in different cultural environments, will be crucial to career success and a critical factor in talent acquisition.

Those comfortable using English as a global language, their own dialect at home, and yet another language in the workplace will find themselves increasingly coming out on top, not only in their country, but in the regional community as well.

Increased economic integration will strengthen business networks across ASEAN. Having a labor force highly skilled in the English language is key to keeping Thai companies competitive.

ประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน (ASEAN Economic Community: AEC) ที่ก�ำลังจะเกิดขึ้นในอีกสามปีข้างหน้า ส่งผลให้กลุ่มประเทศ อาเซียนต้องเตรียมความพร้อมเพื่อรับมือกับสภาพแวดล้อมใหม่ที่ท�ำให้ภูมิภาคนี้กลายเป็นเขตเศรษฐกิจเดียวในภูมิภาครูปแบบ เดียวกันกับอียู พวกเราพร้อมแล้วหรือยังส�ำหรับการเปลี่ยนแปลงดังกล่าว?

ถึงแม้ว่าการก่อตั้งประชาคมเศรษฐกิจ อาเซียนจะน�ำมาซึ่งโอกาสทั้งทางด้าน การเมือง เศรษฐกิจและการพัฒนาสังคมให้ แก่กลุ่มประเทศอาเซียนร่วมกันแล้ว แต่กลุ่ม ประเทศอาเซียนก็ต้องเผชิญหน้ากับความ ท้าทายทางด้านการสื่อสาร เนื่องจากกลุ่ม ประเทศสมาชิกทั้ง 10 ประเทศ ต่างใช้ภาษา ทางการที่แตกต่างกันถึง 11 ภาษา ทั้งนี้ยังไม่ นับรวมถึงภาษารองอีกนับไม่ถ้วน แต่การ สื่อสารเพื่อความเข้าใจกันและกันเป็นปัจจัย หลักในการสร้างความเชื่อใจในการด�ำเนินการ ต่างๆ ดังนั้น ภาษาจะเป็นปัจจัยหลักที่ช่วยให้ บริษัทไทยสามารถคงไว้ซึ่งความสามารถใน การแข่งขันทั้งในระดับประเทศ และระดับ ภูมิภาค เป็นที่ทราบกันโดยทั่วไปว่า บรรษัทข้ามชาติ และองค์กรระหว่างประเทศใช้ภาษาอังกฤษ เป็นภาษาสากลในการสื่อสาร ดังนั้น ภาษา อังกฤษจึงเป็นหนึ่งในวิชาบังคับหลักของ โรงเรียนทั่วประเทศไทย รวมถึงเป็นหนึ่งใน หลักสูตรที่ส�ำคัญต่อการพัฒนาบุคคลที่บริษัท ต่างๆ รวมทั้งเคพีเอ็มจี ประเทศไทยที่ให้ ความส�ำคัญในการสนับสนุนพนักงานในการ เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ สถาบันการศึกษาและองค์กรธุรกิจในอาเซียน ต่างตระหนักถึงความส�ำคัญของภาษาอังกฤษ

ในการเสริมสร้างความได้เปรียบทางการ แข่งขันในเชิงธุรกิจและในการท�ำลายสิ่ง กีดขวางต่อการพัฒนาด้านการค้า ด้านความ มั่นคง และด้านความสัมพันธ์เชิงวัฒนธรรม ระหว่างประเทศในภูมิภาค ดังนั้นการส่งเสริม การใช้ภาษาอังกฤษจึงเป็นหนึ่งในเป้าหมาย หลักที่มุ่งเน้นในการพัฒนาคนภายใต้แผน งานการจัดตั้งประชาคมสังคมและวัฒนธรรม อาเซียน (ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint) โดยทุกประเทศ อาเซียนควรส่งเสริมให้ประชากรมีความ สามารถในการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษได้คล่องมาก ขึ้นเพื่อที่จะเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในการส่งเสริมให้ แรงงานมีคุณภาพมากยิ่งขึ้น รัฐบาลไทยได้ก�ำหนดนโยบายต่างๆ เพื่อส่ง เสริมให้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษารองในการ ติดต่อประเทศต่างๆทั่วโลก เพื่อรับมือกับการ รวมตัวของประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียนที่จะ เกิดขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2558 โดยหนึ่งในนโยบาย ดังกล่าว คือ Thailand’s Speak English Year 2012 ที่ส่งเสริมให้โรงเรียนก�ำหนดวัน ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษหนึ่งวันต่อสัปดาห์ นอกจากนี้ องค์กรธุกรกิจต่างๆ ที่ต้องการยกระดับ มาตรฐานทักษะการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษของ พนักงานก็สามารถใช้นโยบายนี้ในสถาน ประกอบการได้เช่นกัน

แม้ว่าการส่งเสริมการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็น ภาษาสากลในการติดต่อธุรกิจเป็นหนึ่งใน กลยุทธ์หลักที่จะช่วยขับเคลื่อนการเข้าสู่ ประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน แต่การส่งเสริม วัฒนธรรม และภาษาที่หลากหลายก็เป็นสิ่ง จ�ำเป็นเช่นเดียวกัน เมื่อเดือนมกราคมที่ผ่าน มา จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยได้เปิดเผยผล การศึกษาว่าประชากรในประเทศกัมพูชา ลาว เวียดนาม และพม่า ต่างก็แสดงความสนใจใน การศึกษาภาษาไทยเช่นกัน การเรียนรู้ภาษาต่างชาติกลายเป็นสิ่งส�ำคัญใน โลกยุคโลกาภิวัตน์ ไม่เพียงเฉพาะเพื่อ ประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียนที่จะเกิดขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2558 หากแต่จะเป็นสิ่งจ�ำเป็นต่อ เยาวชนรุ่นหลังที่จะต้องพบกับการที่ภูมิภาค อาเซียนได้มีการเชื่อมโยงกันทั้งทางเศรษฐกิจ และสังคม ซึ่งในอนาคตการมีความสามารถ ในการใช้ภาษาต่างชาติ และการมีความ สามารถในการปรับตัวกับสภาพแวดล้อมที่มี วัฒนธรรมอันหลากหลายจะเป็นประโยชน์ต่อ ความก้าวหน้าทางอาชีพการงาน และบุคคลที่ มีความสามรถดังกล่าวจะกลายเป็นบุคลลที่ โดดเด่นไม่ใช่เพียงเฉพาะแค่ในประเทศ บ้านเกิดเท่านั้น แต่รวมถึงภายในประชาคม ภูมิภาคอาเซียนอีกด้วย

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg recently announced that the social media giant would hold an IPO. Market experts estimate the company’s value as high as 100 billion US dollars.

Time will reveal the staying power of this groundbreaking company, and whether its billions of connections are worth billions of dollars. What the IPO shows CEOs in Thailand and around the world now, is the significance of social networks in shaping the future of communication.

In Thailand there are over 850,000 people on Twitter and over 14,000,000 people on Facebook, according to the statistic tracker Socialbakers.com.

Those millions are employees, customers, clients and competitors, and social media provides new channels to communicate, interact and reach out to them.

In June 2011 KPMG Thailand opened Twitter, Facebook and Youtube accounts. Our foray into social media began as a hands-on, learn by doing approach. Our initial strategy was simple – target business decision makers with informative content, keep it focused, consistent and relevant, and see what happens.

When the floods hit Thailand in October 2011 thousands turned to social media for the fastest updates on the situation. For KPMG Thailand, social media became a critical channel to get announcements to staff and clients.

Now, social media is a strategic channel to promote our expertise, reach out to business influencers and increase approachability and interaction. It’s also a channel with lightning fast reaction time. As many influential figures have discovered, once something is online, there’s no way to take it back.

Risk is inherent in any new form of communication. By taking several steps to mitigate risk, organizations can embrace social media as a key part of their marketing strategy.

The following questions should be considered when using social media for business.

What is your risk process for social media? If you are starting from scratch it’s worth creating a consistent process to set up a social media account at your organization, including guidelines for what is allowed and what is not.

You may have different accounts for internal and external purposes, or for different departments.

Who will be in charge and how much time will they dedicate to upkeep and strategy? Some companies employ a dedicated social media manager, others utilize public relations personnel. The key is to ensure social media accounts are checked and updated daily. Additionally, some executives have their own social media accounts to contribute to the brand voice.

Who are you targeting and how can you reach them? Be clear on your intended audience. Do they look for promotions, expert tips or company updates? Knowing this ensures a consistent voice. Readers should know what to expect from your social media.

What do you hope to achieve and how will social media fit into your overall communication and marketing strategy? Social media is part of your wider marketing and communications plan, so it should be aligned to your overall objectives.

Over time the definition of money laundering has evolved from referring only to the laundering of drug money to include theft, fraud, tax evasion and terrorist financing, among other offences. This evolution resulted in significant changes in legislation, and raised the bar for countries wanting to be seen as compliant with global standards.

Thailand witnessed the effect of this following a review in February 2012 by the Financial Actions Task Force (FATF), the global standard setting body in the area of Anti Money Laundering and Combating Financial Terrorism (AML/CFT). The review highlights a number of strategic deficiencies in Thailand’s AML/CFT regime, and adds the country to its “grey list” of high-risk jurisdictions.

Thailand’s high-level commitment to AML/CFT has been acknowledged but the FATF wants to see more done, including 3 specific recommendations; 1.

Adequately criminalising terrorist financing; 2. Establishing adequate procedures to identify and freeze terrorist assets; and 3. Further strengthening AML/CFT supervision.

The social consequences of these developments should not be overlooked.

Increasing foreign direct investment to support economic growth is a key objective of the Thai Government. Money laundering

can result in short term capital inflows, but there are significant longer term consequences such as compromising the reputation of the country and damaging the integrity of the financial sector. With the approaching ASEAN Economic Community and the desire to remain competitive, these consequences must be avoided.

Thailand’s corporate sector’s efforts to expand overseas could be hampered by the country’s high-risk status. Thai companies may find an increased cost of doing business in countries with stricter AML regulations and reduced access to foreign Banks, important considerations in appraising investment opportunities.

A deficient AML/CFT regime may slow development of the Banking sector through exposure to significant reputational and legal risks. Adverse publicity could compromise the integrity of a Bank, or indeed the whole sector. We know from experience this can result in operations being closed down. Doing business will become more expensive for Banks, as costs for correspondent banking services, amongst others, increase.

Consequences also extend to you and me, as customers, including increased scrutiny on international transactions, increased costs of sending and receiving money from overseas, and in some cases a complete restriction from international transactions.

So what can be done? Banks are essentially delegated responsibility for enforcing anti-money laundering regulations. Improving customer due diligence and transaction monitoring procedures through investment in training and new technologies will address some of the deficiencies highlighted. This can require significant time and investment so Banks will need to ensure AML is on the Boardroom agenda.

But it’s not just a matter of cost. Thai Banks face unique challenges in their AML role.

As a Buddhist country, respect of hierarchy is important in daily life. A bank employee may seek to avoid disrespecting an elderly or “high society” person by asking “too many questions.” Stricter customer due diligence and transaction monitoring procedures could discourage customers from doing business with the Bank.

To stay competitive Thai Banks need to strike a balance in an AML programme that addresses the deficiencies raised by FATF without compromising the growth of their business. However, Banks cannot act alone, and will require the support of regulators in ensuring further progress is made in establishing an actionable legislative framework in this area. Recent developments should encourage this and Banks need to be prepared for the resultant changes in AML regulations going forward.

บางกรณีอาจเจอข้อบังคับในการห้ามการโอนเงิน ระหว่างประเทศก็เป็นได้ ดังนัน้ สิง่ ทีผ่ บู้ ริหารธนาคารต่างๆควรด�ำเนินการ คือ การก�ำหนดให้มหี น่วยงานภายในทีร่ บั ผิดชอบในการ บังคับใช้กฎเกณฑ์ทเี่ กีย่ วกับการป้องกันและปราบปราม การฟอกเงิน รวมถึงการปรับปรุงกระบวนการในการ ตรวจสอบประวัตลิ กู ค้าและการสอดส่องการท�ำ ธุรกรรมทางการเงินของลูกค้า โดยจัดการลงทุนให้มี การฝึกอบรมพนักงาน และการใช้เทคโนโยีใหม่เพือ่ ตรวจสอบข้อบกพร่อง นอกเหนือจากการแบกรับต้นทุนทีเ่ พิม่ ขึน้ ในการ ด�ำเนินการเพือ่ การป้องกันและปราบปรามการฟอกเงิน ธนาคารในประเทศไทยยังประสบความท้าท้ายอันเป็น ผลจากการทีป่ ระเทศไทยเป็นเมืองพุทธซึง่ เคารพและ ให้ความส�ำคัญต่อล�ำดับชัน้ บังคับบัญชา ส่งผลให้ พนักงานธนาคารอาจหลีกเลีย่ งการซักถามบุคคลที่ มีอายุมากกว่า หรือมีฐานะทางสังคมทีส่ งู กว่า นอกจากนีก้ ารตรวจสอบประวัตลิ กู ค้า และการ สอดส่องการท�ำธุรกรรมทางการเงินของลูกค้าที่ เข้มงวดมากขึน้ อาจส่งผลให้ลกู ค้าไม่มาใช้บริการ กับธนาคารก็เป็นได้ เพือ่ รักษาความสามารถในการแข่งขัน ธนาคารไทย ควรสร้างสมดุลในการบริหารการบังคับใช้กฎเกณฑ์ที่ เกีย่ วข้องกับการป้องกันและปราบปรามการฟอกเงิน โดยไม่สง่ ผลเสียต่อการสร้างความเติบโตของธุรกิจ อย่างไรก็ตาม ธนาคารควรร้องขอการสนับสนุนจาก ผูอ้ อกกฎหมายในการระบุขอบเขตทีช่ ดั เจนของ กระบวนการรับมือต่อการป้องกันและปราบปรามการ ฟอกเงิน นอกจากนี้ ธนาคารยังควรมีความพร้อม เสมอต่อการเปลีย่ นแปลงของกฎหมายด้านการ ป้องกันและปราบปรามการฟอกเงินทีอ่ าจเกิดขึน้ ได้อกี ในอนาคต

อย่างไรก็ตาม ธนาคารควรร้องขอการสนับสนุนจากผู้ออกกฎหมายในการระบุขอบเขต ที่ชัดเจนของกระบวนการรับมือต่อการป้องกันและปราบปรามการฟอกเงิน

When I started my 5 year rotation with KPMG Philadelphia, I got a book from the KPMG training center called “Biz Talk – American Business Slang” by David Burke. I wondered why I would need this book, business conversation should be about technical words and business language, right? But when I started working with the team, the very first phrase I heard was, “I would like to touch base with you regarding this issue.” The first thing that came to my mind was, “Are they talking about baseball?” Or sometimes people would say, “Give me a heads up” and all I could think was, “Who’s head are they talking about?” Or how about, “I can’t go to the game tonight. Can I take a rain check?” Ummm… Why are you suddenly talking about the weather? Come on, this slang was not taught in my English books back home in Thailand!!

Americans use a variety of terms and phrases that are not standard English. I know that using slang and jargon is a quick and easy way to communicate. When you understand the terms it saves a lot of time. But for those who use English as a second language like me, it can create the potential for misunderstanding.

Looking back, it makes me laugh to think how different the real meanings were from my interpretations!

ช่วงที่ไปท�ำงานที่ KPMG Philadelphia office ฉันได้หนังสือเล่มหนึง่ จากทางแผนกอบรมของทางบริษทั ชือ่ ว่า “Biz Talk – American Business Slang” เขียนโดย David Burke ซึง่ ตอนนัน้ ฉันยังคิดอยูว่ า่ หนังสือเล่มนีจ้ ำ� เป็นส�ำหรับตัวเองอย่างไร ในเมือ่ การสนทนาเชิงธุรกิจ น่าจะใช้เป็นค�ำศัพท์เฉพาะหรือภาษาทางธุรกิจมากกว่า แต่พอได้เริม่ ท�ำงานกับทีม ตรวจสอบบัญชีและลูกค้า ประโยคแรกๆ ทีฉ่ นั ได้ยนิ คนในทีมคุยกับลูกค้าทางโทรศัพท์คอื “I would like to touch base with you....” ตอนนัน้ สิง่ ทีแ่ ว่บเข้ามาในหัวของฉันคือ “เขาคุยเรือ่ งเบสบอลกันเหรอ” หรือบางครัง้ คนมักจะพูดกับฉันว่า ‘they want to give me a heads up’ ซึง่ ฉันก็งงว่าเขาพูดถึง “หัวอะไร” หรือไม่ก็ “I can’t go to the game tonight. Can I take a rain check?” เอ่อ ท�ำไมอยูด่ ๆี ก็มาคุยเรือ่ งลมฟ้าอากาศล่ะคะ... อยากจะบอกค�ำสแลงพวกนี้ไม่เห็นมีสอนในหนังสือเรียนภาษาอังกฤษของฉันเลยนะคะ คนอเมริกนั มักใช้คำ� หรือส�ำนวนทีห่ ลากหลายที่ไม่ใช่ภาษาอังกฤษมาตรฐาน ซึง่ ฉันเองก็ทราบว่าการใช้ภาษาสแลงหรือค�ำศัพท์เฉพาะกลุม่ มันท�ำให้การสือ่ สารรวดเร็วและง่ายขึน้ ซึง่ ช่วยประหยัดเวลาส�ำหรับคนทีร่ จู้ กั ส�ำนวนพวกนีอ้ ยูแ่ ล้ว แต่คนที่ไม่ได้ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาหลักอย่างฉัน มันมีโอกาสทีท่ ำ� ให้เกิดการเข้าใจผิดได้ ฉันคิดว่าบางครัง้ มันก็ตลก ดีเวลาเราแปลศัพท์สแลงของคนอเมริกนั ผิดไปจากความหมายจริงๆ ของมันโดยสิน้ เชิง To touch base with someone พูดคุยหรือสนทนาเพื่ออัพเดทข้อมูล To give someone a heads up แจ้งเตือนล่วงหน้าหรือบอกกล่าวถึงสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่งที่กำ�ลังจะมาถึง
