SCG has been a positive influence on our people strategy for many years. They are part of the inspiration for our People Passion department, which has developed into a key focus of our business strategy. Indeed, our people are what differentiate us in a highly competitive market.

We reach out to Indonesia with the story of PTT Green Energy’s experience entering the market as a foreign investor and we continue reaching towards the AEC to prepare our clients and ourselves for the new financial challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Finally, we provide insight and context on the current economic situation in Europe, a hot item on many CEO’s agendas.

and managed correctly so that people work to their full potential and find satisfaction in work they enjoy. The tool we use to develop strengths is Gallup’s StrengthsFinder, a survey that identifies an individual’s five strongest talents.

After identifying these five talents we develop a SWOT analysis, to understand the strengths of each talent and the opportunities to utilize that strength at work. Each talent has a flipside - a potential weakness that could threaten development of the strength. Therefore we must critically analyze and develop strategies to address those weaknesses and threats associated with each unique talent. For example, someone with a talent for learning will have a high willingness to acquire knowledge, but without a clear objective, they may spend too much time acquiring superfluous knowledge and miss deadlines.

So, why do team members think or act in a certain way? The answer is that everyone has unique strengths.

With an understanding of those unique strengths and how to utilize them we can facilitate a happy work place.

At the same time, as managers we have an opportunity to create value for our business with those distinctive capabilities. In addition, it encourages the team to appreciate one another’s perspectives. Discussing strengths opens up communication, fine-tunes the team mechanism, and increases our ability to plan and achieve objectives together that unite our strengths.

WHAT IS SCG’S PEOPLE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY? HOW DOES IT ENSURE PEOPLE WORK TO THEIR STRENGTHS? Our strategy is called High Potential Assessment. The whole company takes part in a yearly assessment process focusing on identifying the potential in each person, ensuring everyone identifies and develops their strengths. The 3 factors that identify High Potential people are: being a good person with the right core values, management skills and leadership skills.

BEING ONE OF THE LARGEST THAI COMPANIES, YOU ARE INCREASINGLY WORKING ACROSS BORDERS. HOW DOES THIS FIT IN WITH YOUR PEOPLE STRATEGY? International experience is very important to us. Our Go Regional strategy prepares people to go overseas, generally to ASEAN,

a region that will be even more important once the AEC comes into effect. Now we focus on Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines and Cambodia.

Myanmar is also on our radar for the future. There are 224 Thai staff working abroad now and 9,933 foreign SCG staff in other countries, 6,000 of which are in Indonesia.

HOW ARE YOU BUILDING AN INTERNATIONAL CULTURE IN SCG TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO GO ABROAD? In addition to the monetary and nonmonetary benefits, the opportunity to reach out and move forward is the top incentive to work overseas. Our goal for the future is to have half of all high level management with overseas experience. This will encourage those who aspire to be leaders at SCG to go abroad. In fact, before they even decide to go abroad we develop their positive attitude through activities like

seminars about foreign cultures and the chance to travel abroad on short assignments. Our total workforce is 38,000 people with almost 10,000 outside of Thailand. I’m betting the proportion of overseas to Thai investments will be 50:50 in the next 3-4 years. People who go overseas with SCG will get the perspective and experience that will benefit them as the next generation of top-level management.

WHAT IS IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE OF PEOPLE STRATEGY AT SCG? In the next few years we’ll stay on track with our current strategy, which extends to 2015. The AEC will be implemented then, so our Go Regional strategy will be even more important and might expand from ASEAN to all of Asia.

มากขึน้ เมือ่ แนวทางของ AEC ได้เริม่ ใช้ โดยมุง่ เน้นที่ ประเทศอินโดนีเซีย เวียดนาม ฟิลปิ ปินส์ กัมพูชา และพม่า ซึง่ เป็นประเทศ ทีเ่ ราจับตามองอยู่ในอนาคต ในขณะนีเ้ รามี พนักงานทีเ่ ป็นคนไทยท�ำงานในต่างประเทศ จ�ำนวน 224 คน และพนักงานทีเ่ ป็นคนพืน้ ที่ ในแต่ละประเทศ อีก 9,933 คน ในจ�ำนวนนี้ มี 6,000 คน เป็นคนอินโดนิเซีย SCG มีวิธีอย่างไรที่จะสร้างแรงจูงใจใน การท�ำงานในต่างประเทศให้กับ พนักงาน

Investment in palm oil has been part of PTT’s vision since 2006.

PTT’s upstream business, of which palm oil is a part of, aims to find renewable energy and increase Thailand’s energy security. Industry research concludes that palm oil is a long term investment, will pay back within 7 years and provides a good return (EBITDA > 50%), depending on several factors: 1 Appropriate geography, including high levels of water and sunshine.

2 A full scope of supply chain processes, from plantation to extraction facility, enabling constant control over input and output.

3 The local population, which is the key variable in maintaining continuous commercial production.

4 The new IFRS accounting standards which consider the full value of the investment, including the value growth of the palm trees, which increase with market value every year.

Because of the business opportunity and importance of developing renewable energy, PTT decided to invest in palm oil. In the first stage of investment we looked to Indonesia because of its appropriate geography, land and labor development potential, and support from the Indonesian government.

PTT Green Energy Pte., Ltd (PTTGE) was established in Singapore in 2007 to invest in palm oil in Indonesia.

In parallel PTTGE established Regional Operating Headquarters (ROH) in Thailand for future tax administration benefits. Now, PTTGE has a strong presence in Indonesia, including the rights to 200,000 hectare (Ha) of land, approximately 20% of which we have developed into plantations. We own 2 extraction facilities which can produce 2,000 – 3,000 tonnes of crude palm oil per month. The main task of PTTGE in the next stage will be to accelerate development of the 200,000 Ha to increase growth and profitability.

Main obstacles from our experience investing in Indonesia:

Different standards for doing business which stem from differences in thinking and society.

Government administration, which is divided into central and local governments, making it challenging to enforce laws in unity.

Although the investment had potential for high returns, there was also risk that needed to be managed, especially when finding a trustworthy local business partner.

Under Indonesian law, investment by multinational companies in the palm oil industry cannot exceed 95% of total investment value. Another major risk was acquiring rights and licenses.

PTT and even the Thai government are unable to manage this risk.

Therefore, in order for PTTGE to be managed independently, it was necessary to separate into a public limited company with PTT Group as the major shareholder. This enabled PTTGE to manage the investment risks and work faster in decision making and execution.

PTTGE is still in the beginning stage of its overseas investment model, so we cannot conclude if we have reached our goals or not.

We still rely on support from many entities, including government and business organizations. Nevertheless, PTTGE’s palm oil investment is just one example of Thai companies expanding and investing in other countries in the Asean region. In the near future, Thailand will be part of the Asean Economic Community (AEC), therefore Thai business will be supported by the Thai government and private agencies, such as the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), as well as related business organizations, in order to securely move forward in the Asean region.

ตั้งแต่ปี 2006 การลงทุนในธุรกิจปาล์ม น�้ำมันเป็นวิสัยทัศน์ของ บริษัท ปตท. จ�ำกัด (มหาชน) โดยมีเป้าหมายหลักในการ ขยายการลงทุนในธุรกิจต้นน�้ำ (การลงทุนใน ธุรกิจปาล์มน�้ำมันเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของธุรกิจ ต้นน�้ำ) เพื่อหาเชื้อเพลิงที่สามารถผลิตได้ อย่างไม่มีหมด (Renewable Energy) และสร้างความมั่นคงทางด้านพลังงาน ของประเทศ จากการศึกษารายละเอียด ของธุรกิจสามารถสรุปได้ว่า ธุรกิจปาล์ม น�้ำมันเป็นการลงทุนระยะยาว แต่สามารถ คืนทุนได้ภายในระยะเวลา 7 ปี และเป็น ธุรกิจที่ให้ผลตอบแทนที่ดี (EBITDA > 50%) โดยขึ้นอยู่กับปัจจัยส�ำคัญ ดังนี้ 1. พัฒนาสวนปาล์มในภูมิประเทศที่มี ศักยภาพ คือ มีปริมาณน�้ำและ แสงแดดมาก 2. ด�ำเนินการอย่างครบวงจร ทั้งสวนปาล์ม น�้ำมันและโรงสกัดน�้ำมันปาล์ม เพื่อที่จะ สามารถควบคุม Input และ Output ได้ตลอดระยะเวลาการลงทุน 3. ให้ความส�ำคัญกับประชากรในท้องที่ เนื่องจากแรงงานเป็นตัวแปรส�ำคัญที่ ท�ำให้เกิดการป้อนผลผลิตเข้าสู่โรงสกัด อย่างต่อเนื่อง 4. ด้วยมาตรฐานบัญชีสากลใหม่ IFRS ท�ำให้มูลค่าในการลงทุนพัฒนาสวนปาล์ม รวมทั้งมูลค่าการเจริญเติบโตตามอายุ ของต้นปาล์ม มีมูลค่าเพิ่มขึ้นตามมูลค่า ตลาดในขณะนั้น (Market Value) ท�ำให้ มูลค่าสินทรัพย์ (Asset) ของโครงการ โดยปกติจะเพิ่มขึ้นทุกๆ ปี จากการเล็งเห็นโอกาสทางธุรกิจและความ ส�ำคัญในการจัดหาพลังงานทดแทน ปตท. จึงตัดสินใจเข้าลงทุนในธุรกิจดังกล่าว โดยในระยะแรกได้เน้นการลงทุนในประเทศ อินโดนีเซีย เนื่องจากมีภูมิประเทศที่เหมาะ

สมและมีศักยภาพพร้อมทั้งในเรื่องของพื้นที่ และแรงงาน อีกทั้งรัฐบาลอินโดนีเซียยัง ให้การสนับสนุนธุรกิจปาล์มน�้ำมันอีกด้วย บริษัท ปตท. กรีน เอ็นเนอร์ยี่ จ�ำกัด (PTTGE) จึงถูกจัดตั้งขึ้นที่ประเทศสิงคโปร์ ในปี 2007 เพื่อเข้าลงทุนในธุรกิจปาล์ม น�้ำมันในประเทศอินโดนีเซีย รวมทั้งได้ จัดตั้ง Regional Operating Headquarters (ROH) ในประเทศไทยควบคู่กันไปด้วยเพื่อ สิทธิประโยชน์ทางภาษี ในปัจจุบัน PTTGE สามารถเข้าไปด�ำเนินธุรกิจนี้ได้อย่างมั่นคง โดยมีสิทธิ์ในพื้นที่เพาะปลูกปาล์มน�้ำมันแล้ว ประมาณ 200,000 เฮกตาร์ (Ha) โดยได้ ด�ำเนินการพัฒนาเป็นสวนปาล์มแล้วไม่น้อย กว่าร้อยละ 20 ของพื้นที่ทั้งหมด และมีโรง สกัด 2 โรง ซึ่งสามารถผลิตน�้ำมันปาล์มดิบ ได้ประมาณ 2,000-3,000 ตันต่อเดือน สิง่ ส�ำคัญที่ PTTGE ต้องด�ำเนินการต่อไปคือ การเร่งพัฒนาพื้นที่ทั้ง 200,000 Ha ให้เสร็จ โดยเร็ว เพื่อให้ธุรกิจมีความก้าวหน้าและ สร้างผลก�ำไรได้เร็วยิ่งขึ้น จากประสบการณ์การเข้าลงทุนใน อินโดนีเซียที่ผ่านมา อุปสรรคส�ำคัญ 2 ประการในการลงทุน คือ ำเนินธุรกิจที่แตกต่าง 1 มาตรฐานการด� ซึ่งเกิดจากพื้นฐานทางความคิดและ สังคม

หารงานของภาครัฐ โดยแบ่งเป็น 2 การบริ รัฐบาลกลาง (Central Government)

และรัฐบาลท้องถิน่ (Local Government) จึงท�ำให้การบังคับใช้กฎหมายขาดความ เป็นเอกภาพ

แม้ว่าการลงทุนในธุรกิจปาล์มน�้ำมันใน ประเทศอินโดนีเซียมีศักยภาพที่ให้ผล ตอบแทนสูง แต่ก็มีความเสี่ยงที่จะต้อง บริหารจัดการด้วยเช่นกัน โดยเฉพาะอย่าง ยิ่งการหา local partner ที่ดีและไว้ใจได้มา ร่วมท�ำธุรกิจ เนื่องจากกฎหมายประเทศ อินโดนีเซียก�ำหนดให้นักลงทุนต่างชาติ สามารถลงทุนในธุรกิจดังกล่าวได้ไม่เกิน 95% ของมูลค่าการลงทุนทั้งหมด และความเสี่ยงที่ต้องค�ำนึงถึงอีกประการ คือ การได้มาซึ่งเอกสารสิทธิ์และใบอนุญาต ต่างๆ ในการท�ำธุรกิจ ซึ่งความเสี่ยงใน ลักษณะนี้ ปตท.หรือแม้แต่รัฐบาลไทยเอง ก็ไม่สามารถรับมือได้ ดังนั้น หาก PTTGE สามารถบริหารงานได้อย่างเป็นเอกเทศ และเบ็ดเสร็จในลักษณะของบริษัท จ�ำกัด (มหาชน) โดยมี ปตท. เป็นผู้ถือหุ้นใหญ่ จะช่วยบริหารความเสี่ยงที่กล่าวมานี้ได้ อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพมากขึ้นจากการตัดสิน ใจและการบริหารงานที่รวดเร็ว ปัจจุบัน PTTGE อยู่ในช่วงเริ่มต้นของการ เข้าไปลงทุนในต่างประเทศอย่างเต็มรูปแบบ ซึ่งยังไม่สามารถสรุปได้ว่าประสบผลส�ำเร็จ ตามเป้าหมายแล้วหรือไม่ และยังต้องการ การสนับสนุนจากหลายฝ่ายไม่ว่าจะเป็นภาค รัฐหรือภาคธุรกิจที่เกี่ยวข้อง อย่างไรก็ดี การลงทุนในธุรกิจปาล์มน�้ำมันของ PTTGE เป็นเพียงหนึ่งในตัวอย่างของบริษัทไทยที่ ขยายการลงทุนไปยังประเทศอื่นในภูมิภาค อาเซียน ซึ่งอนาคตอันใกล้นี้ประเทศไทย ก�ำลังก้าวเข้าสู่การเป็นประชาคมเศรษฐกิจ อาเซียน (AEC) ดังนั้นธุรกิจไทยควรได้รับ การสนับสนุนจากหน่วยงานต่างๆ ทั้งภาค รัฐและเอกชน อาทิเช่น รัฐบาล สภา อุตสาหกรรมแห่งประเทศไทย ตลอดจนภาค ธุรกิจที่เกี่ยวข้อง เพื่อให้ภาคธุรกิจไทยก้าว ไปได้อย่างมั่นคงในภูมิภาคอาเซียน

Under pressure to ensure Thailand remains a competitive place to do business in SE Asia once the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) comes into effect in 2015, the Thai government recently reduced corporate income tax (CIT) rates from 30% to 20% over a three year period (23% for 2012 and 20% for 2013 and 2014). It is proposed that this reduction in rates will help prevent capital and businesses from migrating away from Thailand to other lower tax countries such as Singapore.

While tax is rarely the main motivating factor behind developing an effective business strategy, it does inform the analysis and can often serve to prevent what would otherwise be smart strategic decisions from going forward. Thus, the recent reductions in CIT may not prompt CEOs into action but will certainly remove what might otherwise be a significant impediment to implementing an overall AEC expansion or investment strategy.

Thai executives will surely feel a sense of relief that their business growth and development will not be burdened by excessive taxes. They will find increased flexibility due to the lower costs associated with tax savings. They will also find additional opportunities with both domestic and international business partners who may previously have avoided certain investments due to higher tax rates.

These business executives will no doubt see an improved business and investment climate as lower taxes always leads to greater economic growth as companies find that the

cost of doing business is reduced.

Their cost of financing will be reduced due to an improved investment climate, as more investors will be attracted to Thailand due to increased returns on investment. These will all be positive business outcomes of the lower tax rate regime.

The tax savings will lessen the impact from the increase in the minimum wage. Several business owners and executives have bemoaned the increased costs of such a wage increase but when offset against the significant tax savings they will reap from a full 10% reduction in CIT, the impact of the wage hike should not be significant to the bottom line.

In fact the additional tax savings over and above the wage increase may actually encourage businesses to hire more given the increase in net funds available for investment and business expansion.

The entire C-Suite has found the business environment here in Thailand extremely challenging over the past five years in light of political unrest, natural disasters and global economic upheaval. Add to that increasing competition from ASEAN member states due to the AEC and the opening up of neighboring economies such as Myanmar and it’s not hard to understand why all senior level executives, including CFOs, welcome the government’s action on tax rates.

This timely reduction is one large step in the right direction for Thai businesses and the future of the Thai economy. More tax measurements to support investments are expected to be introduced and implemented.

Since the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers many have predicted the collapse of the euro. Yet now it is still trading to the US dollar at almost the same rate as when it was launched in 1999. A look back at history shows why.

has been flawed from the start.

Firstly, a currency must have an economic foundation. At the outset a set of fiscal rules was instated but was insufficiently enforced due to members’ sovereignty.

The euro is the currency of the European Union (EU). Many believe that if the euro fails, the EU might eventually unravel.

Secondly, the European Central Bank (ECB) was forbidden to rescue member states from financial difficulties, but no other mechanism such as a firewall or bailout fund was put in its place.

Created after World War II, the European Economic Community (EEC), and subsequently the EU, replaced the political model of competing sovereign nations dating from the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, which ended the Thirty Years War. However, far from ending war, wars continued as nations competed for dominance. They became bloodier as technology advanced, culminating in the World Wars.

The main objective of the EU was to end European wars with a model of cooperating nations, resolving differences peacefully through legal

Finally, the financial markets misunderstood the euro and misallocated risk by not recognizing that each country’s bond, though in euro, stands alone. This can be seen in the interest rates of individual country bonds, which converged after the launch of the euro. All but the strongest country rates diverged back to pre-euro levels after the Lehman crash when the reality of the risk was realized. Until that moment countries with high rates before the euro could borrow at the same rates as countries

structures in supranational institutions.

The formation of the EU and a common currency was primarily a political strategy with an economic outcome. The EU has been very successful. However, partly because of its cooperative political base, the euro

like Germany. And they did. Much of these borrowings have gone into expenditure which has generated employment but which was not based on sound economic fundamentals.

If it were a federation, indebtedness between countries could be offset.

But Europe is not a federation. It must find a cooperative way to put strong fiscal disciplines in place, build an effective firewall and deal with the over-indebtedness of its members.

Inevitably the need to cooperate means issues take time to resolve.

This doesn’t suit money markets, diminishes confidence and inhibits investment and growth.

The EU has allowed the ECB to fund European banks with low rate loans, reducing the dependence of the European banks on global lenders, who wanted increasing interest rates to cover their risks. This permitted the unsustainably high bond rates for Italy and Spain to fall to manageable levels.

Polls show a majority of people in the Eurozone believe in the currency.

This is still the case even as the austerity programs are being rejected by the electorates and government leaderships are changing. The euro is considered essential to prevent members from diverging politically and

economically. Even at the height of the debt crisis in Greece, a poll showed most Greeks want to keep the euro.

This belief gives European politicians a mandate to ensure the euro survives as a major global currency.

FIRST NAME BASIS OR FIRST NAME TERMS To have a relationship close enough to call each other by first names, instead of title followed by last name. เมื่อเริ่มรู้จักคุ้นเคยกับคู่สนทนามากขึ้น ก็อาจจะเรียกชื่อต้นของคู่สนทนาแทน การเรียกโดยใช้คำ�นำ�หน้าชื่อตามด้วย นามสกุล

In our globalized world, it’s not unusual to find staff reassigned to other countries. Seeing how different cultures and communities get the job done broadens our perspective while bringing into focus differences in culture, behavior and etiquette.

“At first I found names very confusing,” said Rachel Stevens, from KPMG UK in Nottingham. “Even with a name card to refer to, people have nicknames and titles such as ‘Pi,’ ‘Nong,’ and ‘Khun’ so I never knew what to call someone. I’m not used to addressing someone by age or rank.” Laughing, she continued, “I’m not sure if I could get used to being addressed as ‘older than someone.”

In comparison, non-English speakers may also feel confused about how to address people. Overall, Westerners feel comfortable being addressed by their first name because there isn’t as much cultural value placed on hierarchy. However, in business situations start with a formal title and last name, for example Mr. Smith, until you develop a relationship. You may have heard of people being on “a first name basis” or “first name terms.”

No matter your nationality, you’re not the only one wondering about titles, names and what to call your colleagues and managers. Break the ice and forge better relationships by simply asking, “What should I call you?” “How do I pronounce that?” Or you may even reach out and say, “You can call me……”
