KEY CLUB 101 MISSION STATEMENT Key Club is an international, student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership.

VISION We are caring and competent servant leaders transforming communities worldwide.

MOTTO Caring–Our Way of Life

CORE VALUES The core values of Key Club International are leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness.

PLEDGE I pledge, on my honor, to uphold the Objects of Key Club International; to build my home, school and community; to serve my nation and God; and combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions.

THE STRUCTURE OF KEY CLUB

Key Club International is a self-governing, student-led organization. Each year, Key Club members elect their student officers at club, district and international levels during club meetings and district and international conventions. Key Club members receive guidance and support from adult volunteers, including Kiwanis advisors, faculty advisors and district administrators. Additionally, the Key Club International staff trains and assists the district governors and international board members. The organization is funded by nominal dues paid by every member.

OUR PREFERRED CHARITIES UNICEF Since 1994, Key Club has been Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF and over the years has raised nearly US$5 million for iodine deficiency programs worldwide and HIV and AIDS programs in Kenya and Swaziland. Now it’s helping The Eliminate Project.

MARCH OF DIMES For decades, Key Club has partnered with the March of Dimes to give every baby a healthy start. Key Club members raise thousands of dollars annually through various programs, including collecting change, holding dances and taking part in March of Dimes’ signature event, March for Babies.

CHILDREN‘S MIRACLE NETWORK HOSPITALS Key Club participates with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals by sponsoring fundraising events. Key Club members also participate in service projects at their local children’s hospital.

MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR LISA Hey Key Clubbers, Summer is finally here, and I hope all of you are kicking back and relaxing after a long school year’s end. All of you have put so much effort into the last school year, from taking AP and IB classes, to being in multiple clubs and activities, to all of your endless community service that you have done. To the seniors a special congrats on finishing high school, you guys have worked especially hard. I hope the memories of the last years in high school will carry with all of you, and I hope you know all the service you have done in the last few years, has been changing the lives of others. To the club members, remember that when the sun is out, it is a great chance to grab a few friends and serve, and that service doesn’t end when the school year does! Continue all of your hard work because when you give a little love, you get a little love back, when you give a lot of love, you get a lot of love back. The amount of effort you put into serving is the amount you get back, from seeing a smile from the kid who just got a card at children’s hospital, to packing a meal for a hungry family who lives in the neighborhood. The more and more you serve, the more and more you will see the community being affected, by the love and service you give to it. Remember that when you serve, give your whole heart to the project or fundraiser, and the results will soar. You are the change, with every good deed you do, no matter how big or small, it helps the people around you. From right around the corner to half way around the world, you guys are truly admirable. You give more than anyone could ever see or know, you guys don’t wish that you had the power to change the world, you know you have the power to change the world. Thank you all so much, and just remember, what you share with the world is what the world keeps of you.

Lisa Antonio,

Pacific Northwest District Governor

MESSAGE FROM LT. G O V E R N O R P A T R I C I A To my wonderful Ninja Pandas, It’s been an incredibly long time since I’ve talked to y’all! I promise it will never happen again. These past two months have been absolutely insane with all activity going on in our communities and schools. I am truly blessed to be able to say that we were all active right until the end of school; despite the teacher’s strike affecting our abilities to serve to our full capabilities. I am so thankful to be able to work with your presidents and executive officers. We will be working hard together to play a key part in your summer! Since the last newsletter, our division has grown once again! I would like to officially welcome Dr. Charles Best Secondary School from Coquitlam into Division 13/15/17. Our Coquitlam family is steadily growing and they have such an amazing and supportive team of Key Clubbers already spreading their enthusiasm for servant leadership into their community. Thanks to Oak Bay and Claremont, we are able to say that our division stretches to Vancouver Island as well. We will be having an additional DCM in July on the Island to meet these amazing Key Clubbers. Additional details can be found in this newsletter as well as released to your presidents and online on Sunday, July 13th! As well, Canada Rally is quickly approaching us. Since we are the host division, I will be putting out a planning committee sign-up form for the rally! I will need each and every one of you to help with hosting an incredible and successful rally. Look for the sign-up being released on Sunday, July 13th! Finally, my goal for July is to increase the level of communication between all of our clubs. Each one of your presidents and vice-presidents are in good contact with one -another and we will continue to build our divisional unity for the most amazing summer of service in your life! Thank-you for an amazing end of school! Remember to stay safe and enjoy these beautiful days of summer. Nothing is brighter than the sunshine except our future together.

In Service and Compassion,

Patricia Xie Lieutenant Governor of Division 13/15/17 Pacific Northwest District Key Club International

FINAL MESSAGE FROM IP INT. T R U S T E E R O S H N I What Makes Key Club Unique? Key Club is the largest high school service organization in the world, but what makes it so special and what enables it to continue to grow? It can’t be the ability to volunteer because no matter where you go, you can find a way to give back to your community. You can even volunteer globally through UNICEF, Rustic Pathways, and other worldwide organizations. What makes Key Club is different from every other organization out there is the tight-knit community that it creates between people who live on opposite sides of a city, a state, a nation, or the world. To fully seize the opportunities that Key Club provides high school students, it’s important for everyone to be involved with their divisions, their district, and international. You can get involved with Key Club International by attending Key Club events, joining social media sites that are created to link together Key Clubbers from all over the world, and talking to your district leaders! In terms of the division, your Lieutenant Governor should be having Divisional Council Meetings every so often in order to bring the entire division together. Your division is composed of the schools around you that have Key Clubs. At these meetings, take advantage of the close distance between you and the other Key Clubbers in attendance. Arrange meet-ups, socials, and joint volunteer projects to increase your impact on your community and meet people who you otherwise would have not had the chance to meet! In terms of your district, the Pacific Northwest District is composed of all of the Key Clubs in Alaska, Washington, and Oregon, as well as some of the clubs in western Idaho, northern California, and Canada. There are rallies in the summer for all Key Clubbers in a specific region to attend and meet new people. At these rallies, you’re bound to have an amazing time while also learning about Key Club International through educational forums. Each year, PNW also hosts District Convention: an exciting weekend in which Key Clubbers from all over the district unite to celebrate the end of a wonderful year of service and prepare for the next one. If you have the chance to attend District Convention, I highly recommend it! Yours in service, Roshni Chandwani International Trustee Roshni.chandwani.kc@gmail.com

MESSAGE FROM INTERNATIONAL V I C E—P R E S I D E N T KEVIN ZHANG Hello Pacific Northwest District Key Clubbers! Over this past week, I along with 39 other PNW Key Clubbers and six Kiwanis chaperones had the opportunity to attend the 71st annual International Convention in the vibrant city of Anaheim, California. While there, we had the opportunity to attend educational workshops, meet Key Clubbers from across the world, and elect the 2014-2015 Key Club International Board. I am truly humbled and honored to announce that I was chosen out of a field of four other highly qualified candidates to be your next International Vice President. My biggest support throughout the entire journey, from the moment I decided to run until my name was announced on stage, was the entire Pacific Northwest District. So let me take this time to thank every single one of you- all 13,000+ members. It was your support that got me through not only ICON week but the months leading up to it. Thank you to everyone that messaged be “good luck” and to all of those that congratulated me afterwards. Even though many of you did not attend ICON 2014, I still felt as if all of you were alongside me. I look forward to personally thanking many of you as I travel to some of the upcoming area rallies. To all the graduating seniors, even though I will not have the opportunity to serve you for this upcoming year, I hope that many of you will decide to join Circle K in college and eventually Kiwanis. Once again, THANK YOU to the mighty Pacific Northwest District! I look forward to yet another fantastic year of service, friendship, and growth not only for Key Club International but also for our district! In Service,

Kevin Zhang Kevin Zhang Key Club International Vice President zhangkevin2015@gmail.com

THE PANDA EXPRESS

Introducing the “Boarding Pass for the Panda Express”! This is a point system where clubs will be rewarded for various things. This page will show what points each club got for the previous month and their overall total. At the end of the term, I will be tallying up all marks and the winning CHARTERED and UNCHARTERED club will receive a reasonable prize of their choice. This isn’t to put clubs on the spot for what they have done or not done. This is just a friendly competition between the 13 clubs in our division. Let’s see who wins at the end of the term!

WE WILL BEGIN ON AUGUST 1ST.

AMERICAN R PORTLAND RALLY 2014

#PAR2K14 was the first rally of the 2014-2015 Key Club year! Taking place in Lake Bible Church in Lake Oswego, the Portland Area Rally was held by Divisions 42V, 42C, 44, 45, 62, 64, 65, 66, 68, 70, and 80. The day was filled with lots of icebreakers, fun forums (zumba was awesome!), McChickens, fab talent, and of course pieing of the district board. Division 44 took home the spirit stick but as always all of the divisions (and even the guest divisions) cheered their hearts out.

RALLY RECAP TACOMA RALLY 2014

#TAR2K14 took place at Mount Tahoma High School and was put on by Divisions 19/36, 30, 33, 34, 35, and 38. The day was filled with lots of icebreakers, awesome forums, fab opening and closing ceremonies, and pizza. Division 34 took home the spirit stick but all the divisions (plus guest divisions) showed lots of spirit throughout the day!

INTERNATIONA #K C C A 14

ICON 2014 was an incredible experience and I'm so thankful to have shared it with this amazing group of people. The Pacific Northwest District is proud to have been able to have participated in such an amazing display of servant leadership along with 1600+ other attendees. From the excitement of the International meet-and-greet to rapid-paced procedure during House of Delegates to all the extensive information delivered during amazing workshops, I was truly blessed to be able to attend this year’s ICON in Anaheim, CA. Special thanks to the Kiwanis clubs of Vancouver, West Vancouver, and North Vancouver for providing me with the opportunity to spend an amazing week filled with meeting enthusiastic and dedicated members and creating unforgettable memories. As well, Congratulations to our newly elected International Vice President Kevin Zhang from the Pacific Northwest District and International President Maria Palazzolo from the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District! We are especially proud of you Kevin. Thank-you so much for the work you’ve done and will do for our district and Key Club International. Pacific NorthBEST for real.

DUO DCM MAY DCM REWIND

The May DCM was an incredible success. It was a beautiful day at Queen Elizabeth Park and we enjoyed many bonding games and ice-breakers while experiencing an amazing sunny day. During Miracle Minute, we surpassed or goal of $50 and we raised $63. 83. This means that I got to be pied in the face 3 times! It was disgusting but also 100% worth since we saved 35 lives! Thank-you to everyone for successfully bringing food during the potluck! It was a new idea to introduce a potluck in order to feed everyone and it may be a kept tradition if everyone continues to deliver. I hope you all met someone new that day and got to learn about how big Key Club really is.

M RECAP JUNE DCM REWIND

The June DCM was focussed primarily on our theme of the month, which was Sweet Scavenge. Our scavenger hunt was a blast and not only did we create tons of new memories, but we have the photos for proof! We also shared the unfortunate news that, due to the teachers’ strike, many of us were unable to carry on with club activities during school. However, with summer well upon us, we’re able to carry on with larger activities in our division! Never fear, Key Club is here.

FUTURE DIVISIONAL Elevate Our Efforts for Eliminate (August 2014) We'll be having a big summer service project in August that will be hosted in different locations on the same day. Possibilities for the nature of this project are currently being planned out and options will be released to your presidents in mid-June. The name is to pay homage to the 2014 PNW DCON's "Level-up in Service" theme! All proceeds will go towards The Eliminate Project.

Big Bike Event (Heart & Stroke Foundation) EVENT DATE TBA The Heart&Stroke Big Bike is a team event geared towards community organizations, companies and groups. Teams made up of 29 enthusiastic riders each commit to raise $50 or more. A driver is provided by the Foundation and riders pedal through their community in support of heart disease and stroke research.

This event requires a general volunteer sign-up found here: http:// www.heartandstroke.bc.ca/site/c.kpIPKXOyFmG/b.5058399/k.65DD/ Volunteer_Application/apps/ka/ct/contactus.asp? c=kpIPKXOyFmG&b=5058399&en=9iKHLUMzF8LQJ4MCL7LNI0PMLlIML4PKJ9 IOJaMUIwH (STATE BIG BIKE so they know you're interested in that event!)

L EVENTS SPOTLIGHT 36TH ANNUAL VANCOUVER PRIDE PARADE (August 3rd) The Vancouver Pride Parade was granted civic status last year in 2013 as it is now considered one of the Vancouver’s flagship events! Attracting crowds of more than 650,000, the Pride Parade is renowned on the international stage as on of the largest and most successful events in the world, in support of LGBTQ communities, with spectators and participants outnumbering the host City’s residents. Volunteer for the largest single-day event in British Columbia! Parade volunteers fulfill a number of essential roles for the successful operation of the Pride Parade. Volunteers are needed to setup, monitor and teardown the Parade route, manage crowds and traffic along the Parade route, set a consistent pace, carry rainbow flags, and providing logistical support during the Parade. The sign-up for this is a little more extensive but this would be a really excellent opportunity to experience Vancouver culture!

CANADA RALLY PLANNING COMMITEE WANTED Canada Rally is quickly approaching and Division 13/15/17 is hosting it this year! Since both our sister division and us have grown since the past rally, I’ll need your help to plan and execute an amazing rally for everyone to enjoy. This is a great opportunity for those of you want to contribute on a higher level to Key Club and also an excellent way to show off your creative and planning abilities. Interested? T H E ELIMINATE PROJECT

9 160

24 61 1.80

One baby dies every 9 minutes from maternal and

160 babies die each day from maternal and neo-natal Tetanus.

24 countries remain at high risk for maternal and neo-natal tetanus.

Kiwanis will help 61 million mothers and their future babies.

The Eliminate Project raises money for women in multiple countries that are effected by Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The effects are excruciating - newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and have extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival and the baby dies within 7 days of being alive. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease.

It only takes $1.80 to provide 3 tetanus vaccinations to one mother.

#ENDMNTBY2015

During the 2014-2015 term, the Pacific Northwest District aims to raise $50,000 to contribute to the Eliminate Project. We are ready to end MNT by 2015 and we need your help to do it. Every single one of you can save lives and together, we can eliminate Maternal and Neo-Natal Tetanus from the world.

THE 2014-2015 ELEC Ik Hoon Jung is a senior from Southridge High School in Beaverton, OR (Div. 65) and the District Secretary of the PNW District. Service has been a major part of Ik Hoon’s life, and he has been an enthusiastic member of Key Club since his freshman year, serving as Vice President and President of his club in the past. Outside of Key Club, Ik Hoon serves as the piano accompanist for Grace Korean United Methodist Church. He looks forward to serving his district and hopes that his term will bring about great positive personal growth in himself and other Key Clubbers.

DISTRICT SECRETARY IK HOON JUNG

DISTRICT TREASURER ANEESH PAPPU

I am excited and grateful to have the opportunity to serve you all in this capacity. My goals this term include increasing membership to 13,500 members, improving education of club treasurers and increasing financial transparency in the district. Aside from Key Club, I'm actively involved in ASB, Math Team, and Science Bowl. I also enjoy volunteering at the local hospital. I can't get enough of a good intellectual discussion and thoroughly enjoy good books as well! Contact me if you ever have a question on chartering, dues, membership, finances or even if you just want to say hello! I'm always available.

CTED DISTRICT BOARD The product of a do-good mentality, love for design, and a little bit of teen angst, my name is Jenny Zhang and I am your Pacific Northwest District Editor. I am a dragon from Division 32 and I have two very cute dogs. I also have this wanderlust that has taken me to faraway countries alone to test my horizons and my ability to dance to new music. Paraguayan food is my life. My job in our district is to share our impact with as many people as possible. With every hand you shake, piece of trash you pick up, and smile you flash, you as a Key Clubber have the potential to astronomically change the future for the better. Read THE ESPRESSO, the Pacific Northwest Key Club District newsletter, serve your community as much as possible, and stay feeling good!

Hey PNW! My name is Cleo Tsang and I'm currently a junior at Kentridge High School from D32 and throughout my high school career I have served as a class rep, historian (it's a position ok), vice-president, Convention Aide, and now Convention Chair! This year, I will be in charge of planning the 66th Annual District Convention and honestly, I am so excited! I hope that this will be the best convention ever! My Key Club journey so far has been nothing short of amazing, and I owe so much to this district. But aside from Key Club, I like tennis, bread, potatoes, coffee ice cream and hippos. I am also a part of DECA, NHS, Robotics, ASB, and my local youth group. I am so honored and grateful to be serving as the Convention Chair and I hope to make you guys proud!
