In the midst of serene nature and fluctuating weather conditions lies the great Pacific Northwest District (PNW). The Pacific Northwest is geographically the largest district of Key Club International. The district spans from Western Canada to Northern California: with Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and the pan-handle of Idaho in between. The Pacific Northwest encompasses nearly 1.8 million square miles and includes over 300 clubs that operate under 44 divisions. Through rain or shine, snow or hail, Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest dedicate countless hours to their communities and internationally, and are always Proud 'N' Willing to serve!

It’s raining, it’s pouring and PNW is soaring above the rest, ‘cause we’re the best, Pacific Northwest!

MESSAGE FROM LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR PATRICIA Hey Key Clubbers, School is finally back in session and that means school activities (including club activities!) are back in full swing! Since the September issue of The Panda Express, Division 13/15/17 has gotten yet another new club! Please welcome Port Moody Secondary School. We are always excited to share service and spread it throughout schools in the Greater Lower Mainland so if you happened to stumble upon this newsletter, you’ve found the starting place for your path of service. Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. It is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through service to others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities. Here in the Greater Lower Mainland, we strive to do just that in our own, unique, Canadian way. We’re always updating our look and adapting to fit the needs of as many of our Key Clubbers as possible.

CONTACT ME! ^__^

Next, October is the starting month of club visits! I’ll be making my rounds to your clubs within the next two months to see what you guys are up to! So far, Pinetree, Vancouver Westside and Port Moody have really impressed me with not only their membership attendance but also with their enthusiasm and spirit. So show us what you can achieve and bring a friend to your next Key Club meeting! As well, many other important events are happening in October such as Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, different fundraising ideas you can try for the Eliminate Project, the October DCM and our Divisional Trickor-Treat competition. Other important dates to look forward to are November 1st, the deadline for Early-Bird Dues, and November 3rdNovember 7th—Also known as Key Club Week. I look forward to meeting all of you and I hope I get to see many new faces soon!

In Service and Compassion, Patricia Xie ltgpatriciaxie@gmail.com

Myth: You need money to make money. Fact: It actually doesn’t take much money at all to create a successful fundraiser. As you plan your Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF fundraisers, consider one of these ideas—or come up with your own!

Send Hallo-grams. Set up a booth during lunch where students and faculty can pay US$2 to send a small bag of candy and a note or message to someone else in your school. Club members then deliver the bags of candy and notes to recipients on Halloween. In addition to the sender’s message, include information about The Eliminate Project. One example: “The US$2 raised from this Hallo-gram will pay for vaccines to save and protect the lives of a mother and her future children!”

Scare up some fun. If you live in an area known for ghost tours, ask tour companies if they would donate part of one night’s proceeds to your Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF fund. In return, offer to greet their guests that night or prepare their pamphlets and promotional items. Guess the number. Fill a large jar with candy corn. Set up a booth outside your cafeteria and let students guess how many pieces of candy corn the jar contains. Charge US$1 per guess. The winner gets the jar of candy.

FUN FUNDRAISING 10 IDEAS FOR OCTOBER

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is one of our most important fundraisers of the year. It’s the perfect opportunity for your Key Club to make a difference in the lives of women and babies around the world as we work together to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Just US$1.80—less than the cost of a bag of Halloween candy— provides a series of three doses of vaccine, which protects a mother and her future newborns. What can I say when I am trick-or-treating? Let potential donors know how important their donation is and thank them. You could say, “I am part of __(name of your school/club)_________ Key Club, and I am participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. All donations are being used to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus around the world. Every $1.80 pays for the necessary vaccines to protect a mother and her future newborns. Would you like to donate?”

What else can we do, besides go door to door? It doesn’t take much money or time to create a successful Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF fundraiser. Consider one of these ideas—or come up with your own! What if it’s too late to order boxes? Don’t worry! You can print out Trick-or-Treat labels or make your own displays to let everyone know about your club’s activities and opportunities to donate.

We are currently in the midst of my favorite time of the year – dues season! Dues season runs until December 1st and is the time frame in which all clubs must submit dues in order to be a part of Key Club International. Although there are many service organizations aside from Key Club that do not require payments to join, there is no group that provides you with the same level of opportunities as we do. When you pay dues to join, you’re joining an international organization with ties and projects all over the world. Your dues provide you with the opportunity to fundraise for projects such as the Eliminate Project in order to cure deadly diseases around the world. The benefits don’t stop there however; joining Key Club provides you and your club with resources to succeed. As a paid member, you and your club immediately receive the benefits of district support ranging from the help of your Lieutenant Governor and District Executive Officers to the aid of the adult Kiwanians who support us in each and every endeavor we undertake.

As we enter October a very important deadline for dues submission is arriving – Early Bird dues are due November 1st. Although it is not required to meet this deadline, submitting your club’s dues by this time comes with a myriad of benefits, including priority seating at DCON and an Early Bird patch for your club’s banner. In order to meet this deadline, each club must submit $12.50 per member for at least 15 members through the Membership Update Center (MUC), which can be found at www.keyclub.org/MUC. If you have not logged into the MUC this school year yet, it is crucial that you sit down with your adviser, login, and begin the registration process. If you have any issues with login credentials, be sure to email memberservices@kiwanis.org and include me as well (apappu97@gmail.com).

After the Early Bird deadline, the final deadline for dues submission is December st 1 . Unfortunately, clubs who do not submit their dues by this date will be placed on delinquent status. In order to avoid this, I highly recommend that you finish the dues process as soon as possible! I am also always available to assist if you have any issues, so don’t hesitate to shoot me an email or Facebook message if you ever need to!

WHAT IS KEY CLUB WEEK?

KEY CLUB WEEK

Show your K in every way—Show people what Key Club is all about! Spread the word by wearing Key Club gear and publicizing Key Club Week in local stores, your school Web site, community newspapers—even on the radio. Officially announce Key Club Week in your community with a proclamation and refer to the Key Club public relations manual to get great tips on how to publicize Key Club in your community.

Kudos to the Key players—Personally thank all the Key Club supporters you know—teachers, advisors and other Key players. Write thank-you notes, host an appreciation dinner or do something uniquely your own style to recognize the contributions of these special people.

Connect the Ks—Key Club is the largest high school service organization in the world and is a member of the Kiwanis family. Celebrate the entire family of Kiwanis by getting the whole gang involved. Connect with local Kiwanis, Circle K International, Builders, Kiwanis Kids or Aktion clubs and team up for a joint service project.

Bring a friend to Key Club—More members = more service. Increasing the amount of service Key Club performs increases the impact Key Club has on the world. Bring a friend, or two, or more to your next Key Club meeting. Download recruitment resources.

Your way—This is your club’s chance to do its own thing and make its mark. Pick a project, plan a recruitment party or combine activities from the other Key Club Week days. Whatever idea you choose, take it and run with it.

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT WHAT IS THE ELIMINATE PROJECT ? Kiwanis International and UNICEF have teamed up to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus from earth in a project called The Eliminate Project. Maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT) is a highly preventable disease that kills one baby every nine minutes. This causes babies to suffer from painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light – turning the joy of childbirth into a tragedy. A simple $1.80 vaccine can protect a mother and her future babies from this horrible disease. With our joint efforts, we can eliminate MNT from the face of this planet.

16

PNW DISTRICT GOALS FOR THE ELIMINATE PROJECT Maternal and neonatal tetanus kills approximately 60,000 innocent babies and numerous women each year. In order to achieve our goal of eliminating MNT from this planet by 2015, more than 100 million mothers and their babies must be immunized and $110 million are needed. Kiwanis and UNICEF have joined hands in fighting MNT and need our help. Our goal for the Pacific Northwest District is to raise $50,000 by DCON 2015!

ELIMINATE AT SCHOOL Want to do something new and exciting for the upcoming school year that not only engages your student body but also contributes to the better of society? Bring The Eliminate Project to your school! The rest of the school year, your peers and staff will be focusing on fundraising for The Eliminate Project. Talk to your Student Government and Administration to get their support and approval. Here are some easy fundraising ideas that your school can incorporate to prevent mothers and their future babies from this deadly disease: Donate $1.80 to Eliminate per dance ticket bought/for any/all school dances; host miracle minutes during assemblies; hold a coin drive and make it a class competition; have donation jars located around the school and at concession stands; sell merchandise. Make The Eliminate Project your School Project and let’s end MNT together!

DISTRICT SECRETARY IK HOON JUNG

DISTRICT TREASURER ANEESH PAPPU

Ik Hoon Jung is a senior from Southridge High School in Beaverton, OR (Div. 65) and the District Secretary of the PNW District. Service has been a major part of Ik Hoon’s life, and he has been an enthusiastic member of Key Club since his freshman year, serving as Vice President and President of his club in the past. Outside of Key Club, Ik Hoon serves as the piano accompanist for Grace Korean United Methodist Church. He looks forward to serving his district and hopes that his term will bring about great positive personal growth in himself and other Key Clubbers. I am excited and grateful to have the opportunity to serve you all in this capacity. My goals this term include increasing membership to 13,500 members, improving education of club treasurers and increasing financial transparency in the district. Aside from Key Club, I'm actively involved in ASB, Math Team, and Science Bowl. I also enjoy volunteering at the local hospital. I can't get enough of a good intellectual discussion and thoroughly enjoy good books as well! Contact me if you ever have a question on chartering, dues, membership, finances or even if you just want to say hello! I'm always available.

THE 2014-2015 ELECT

The product of a do-good mentality, love for design, and a little bit of teen angst, my name is Jenny Zhang and I am your Pacific Northwest District Editor. I am a dragon from Division 32 and I have two very cute dogs. I also have this wanderlust that has taken me to faraway countries alone to test my horizons and my ability to dance to new music. Paraguayan food is my life.

My job in our district is to share our impact with as many people as possible. With every hand you shake, piece of trash you pick up, and smile you flash, you as a Key Clubber have the potential to astronomically change the future for the better. ReadESPRESSO, the Pacific Northwest Key Club District newsletter, serve your community as much as possible, and stay feeling good! Hey PNW! My name is Cleo Tsang and I'm currently a junior at Kentridge High School from D32 and throughout my high school career I have served as a class rep, historian (it's a position ok), vice-president, Convention Aide, and now Convention Chair! This year, I will be in charge of planning the 66th Annual District Convention and honestly, I am so excited! I hope that this will be the best convention ever! My Key Club journey so far has been nothing short of amazing, and I owe so much to this district. But aside from Key Club, I like tennis, bread, potatoes, coffee ice cream and hippos. I am also a part of DECA, NHS, Robotics, ASB, and my local youth group. I am so honored and grateful to be serving as the Convention Chair and I hope to make you guys proud!
