The Structure of Key Club
Key Club International is a self-governing, student-led organization. Each year, Key Club members elect their student officers at club, district and international levels during club meetings and district and international conventions. Key Club members receive guidance and support from adult volunteers, including Kiwanis advisors, faculty advisors and district administrators. Additionally, the Key Club International staff trains and assists the district governors and international board members. The organization is funded by nominal dues paid by every member.
Our Preferred Charities Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Key Club participates with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals by sponsoring fundraising events. Key Club members also participate in service projects at their local children’s hospital.
March of Dimes For decades, Key Club has partnered with the March of Dimes to give every baby a healthy start. Key Club members raise thousands of dollars annually through various programs, including collecting change, holding dances and taking part in March of Dimes’ signature event, March for Babies.
UNICEF Since 1994, Key Club has been Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF and over the years has raised nearly US$5 million for iodine deficiency programs worldwide and HIV and AIDS programs in Kenya and Swaziland. Now it’s helping The Eliminate Project.
The Pacific Northwest District
“It's raining, it's pouring, and PNW is soaring above the rest, 'cause we're the best, Pacific Northwest!“
In the midst of serene nature and fluctuating weather conditions lies the great Pacific Northwest District (PNW).The Pacific Northwest is geographically the largest district of Key Club International. The district spans from Western Canada to Northern California: with Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and the pan-handle of Idaho in between. The Pacific Northwest encompasses nearly 1.8 million square miles and includes over 300 clubs that operate under 44 divisions. Through rain or shine, snow or hail, Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest dedicate countless hours to their communities and internationally, and are always Proud 'N' Willing to serve!

Governor Greetings Dear Pacific Northwest District, The ending of District Convention is always hard, but it also marks the beginning of another Key Club year, and another year of service. If you have not already met me, I am Lisa Antonio, and I am honored to have the chance to serve as your District Governor for the next year. I am so privileged to be leading such a diverse and enthusiastic district, and I am excited to start building upon our strengths and creating new solutions for our district’s weaknesses. In this upcoming year I want to focus on clubs and members. I want to make sure clubs are thriving and increasing not only membership, but active membership. I want each club member to know the District Board is there to serve the members. I am inspired by the love and passion each one of you has for the act of service. Keep up the amazing work, and remember that ever single minute you spend serving the community is changing the world around you in a positive way. Remember to always keep service in your heart, and no matter what is going on in life, if you are serving, you can always find love. Keep in mind that in hard times, you always have your Key Club family to lean back on, and depend on. Know that the things you have done in Key Club, and the people’s lives you have touched along the way will never be forgotten. Once again I am so grateful to have the chance to serve all of you. I am looking forward to meeting all of you, and if you have any questions please feel free to contact me via email, Facebook, or telephone! In Love and Service,
Lieutenant Governor Greetings To my wonderful Ninja Pandas, April was an incredibly busy month for all of us in Division 13/15/17. I hope that all of you didn’t suffer too much from Post-DCON depression! I am so thankful to have met all your new presidents and executive officers. We will be working hard together to make the 2014-2015 a complete blast. Since the last newsletter, our division has grown! I would like to take the time to officially welcome Gleneagle Secondary School from Coquitlam into Division 13/15/17. They will be working with Pinetree Key Club to strengthen Division 13/15/17’s impact and grow Key Club’s reach in the Coquitlam community. Additional shout-outs to Oakbay and Claremont for being so supportive of each other on Vancouver Island! We will join together in the summer for a DCM on the Island. As the school-year comes to a close, we must say one last farewell to our seniors. They have lead and contributed to so much to each of their clubs and they have built a foundation for the rest of us to expand upon. Seniors, your service, dedication and determination has motivated all of us to follow in your footsteps! Even after high school, there are so many opportunities to continue contributing to your communities including Circle K International if you choose to go to university or even Kiwanis International itself! We wish you the best for all your future endeavours and we hope that you cherish and remember the time we have spent together in the past year. Finally, my goal for May is to increase the level of communication between all of our clubs. Each one of your presidents and vice-presidents are in good contact with oneanother and we will continue to build our divisional unity for the most amazing summer of service in your life! Thank-you for an amazing first month! I hope everyone did well in their exams these last few weeks. Remember to get lots of rest and take care of yourselves. You guys are always the highlight of my month.
In Service and Compassion, Patricia Xie Lieutenant Governor of Division 13/15/17 Pacific Northwest District Key Club International
Letter from your International Trustee What Makes Key Club Unique? Key Club is the largest high school service organization in the world, but what makes it so special and what enables it to continue to grow? It can’t be the ability to volunteer because no matter where you go, you can find a way to give back to your community. You can even volunteer globally through UNICEF, Rustic Pathways, and other worldwide organizations. What makes Key Club is different from every other organization out there is the tightknit community that it creates between people who live on opposite sides of a city, a state, a nation, or the world. To fully seize the opportunities that Key Club provides high school students, it’s important for everyone to be involved with their divisions, their district, and international. You can get involved with Key Club International by attending Key Club events, joining social media sites that are created to link together Key Clubbers from all over the world, and talking to your district leaders! In terms of the division, your Lieutenant Governor should be having Divisional Council Meetings every so often in order to bring the entire division together. Your division is composed of the schools around you that have Key Clubs. At these meetings, take advantage of the close distance between you and the other Key Clubbers in attendance. Arrange meet-ups, socials, and joint volunteer projects to increase your impact on your community and meet people who you otherwise would have not had the chance to meet! In terms of your district, the Pacific Northwest District is composed of all of the Key Clubs in Alaska, Washington, and Oregon, as well as some of the clubs in western Idaho, northern California, and Canada. There are rallies in the summer for all Key Clubbers in a specific region to attend and meet new people. At these rallies, you’re bound to have an amazing time while also learning about Key Club International through educational forums. Each year, PNW also hosts District Convention: an exciting weekend in which Key Clubbers from all over the district unite to celebrate the end of a wonderful year of service and prepare for the next one. If you have the chance to attend District Convention, I highly recommend it! Yours in service, Roshni Chandwani International Trustee Roshni.chandwani.kc@gmail.com

Dynamic Duo Greetings Hey Key Clubbers! My name's Miguel Oreta, and I am this year's Divisional Secretary YAY. Although I am a relatively new addition to the community, I have been a very active member of my home club, Pinetree Secondary. Outside of Key Club, I also volunteer as the Team Leader of the Book Buddies program at the Port Moody Public Library, and at various school clubs. I enjoy making food, sharing food, and eating food. One of my favorite things to do is to make others happy, and I believe that sometimes the best way to do that is with cookies. I am excited to meeting and interacting with every one of you at our future DCMs and other divisional events

Introducing the “Boarding Pass for the Panda Express”! This is a point system where clubs will be rewarded for various things. This page will show what points each club got for the previous month and their overalltotal. At the end of the term, I will be tallying up all marks and the winning CHARTERED and UNCHARTERED club will receive a reasonable prize of their choice. This isn’t to put clubs on the spot for what they have done or not done. This is just a friendly competition between the 12 (incoming 13!) clubs in our division. Let’s see who wins at the end of the term!
DIVISION 13/15/17 APRIL Britannia Key Club The month of April has been fairly busy. In the beginning of May we initiated our first fundraiser after being newly elected, the Purdy's fundraiser. Members (with always an executive present) sold chocolate bars every lunch. We also took part in the MS Walk in West Vancouver. In the second to last week of April, we made 'Take What You Need' posters and put them up around the school. Personally, I think my 'Free Computer' was the best steal. We also went to QUEST again, in which more and more volunteers are participating, which is excellent- QUEST is an eyeopening and very good experience to have. Also, we finally got our club shirts in! It will be awesome to wear our "Britannia Key Club" shirts when we do outings, despite how cheesy it might be.
L 2014 CLUB SPOTLIGHTS Burnaby North Key Club So far our Key Club at Burnaby North has fundraised by selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts. We fundraised towards Unicef for children who need glasses. We gave our club members a chance to volunteer in the MS walk. For the month of May we planned to sell Mother's Day cards within our school to raise money to get out club chartered. The cards will be sold for 3 dollars and we are hoping to sell around 100-150 cards. We are wanting to do more Krispy Kreme doughnut sales to raise money to be able to fund for being chartered since Krispy Kremes are quite popular and does not require prior planning and is quick and easy to pull off.
Churchill Key Club Sir Winston Churchill's Key Club has done a lot to promote Project Eliminate this past month! So far, we have given out matchmaker forms to many people in the grades of 10 and 11, as well as a inspirational bake sale to raise money for Project Eliminate! We also had weekly meetings, where we announced the beginning of our first bake sale in Key Club, and how we divided up the roles. Matchmaker forms were handed out to the execs to invite people to fill them out as a fun and supportive way to not only raise money, but also unite the community. The bake sale took place from April 15-16, a Tuesday and Wednesday event, where our net profit reached above $125! This amount of money will then be deposited later on by our treasurer, Yi Li! We are still gathering money from Project Eliminate, but from Churchill Key Club to you, this has been quite a productive and efficient month, even though our weeks were short!
DIVISION 13/15/17 APRIL Oak Bay Key Club For the past month, our club managed to complete one activity. We managed a water station at the Times Colonist 10K run on Sunday, April 27. We have discussed further plans for future activities in May. Other then taking part in the Times Colonist run, we have not done any further activities for the month of April.
Claremont Key Club For the month of April, we have been involved in a couple events. A few of our members participated in the District Convention from Friday the 4th to Sunday the 6th. On the 19th of April we had many key clubbers help in the Ron Neil Easter Egg Hunt to put on an Easter egg hunt for a bunch of little kids. We all had a great time, and a couple of us dressed up as an Easter Rabbit and Sunny Bear. Later in the month, on April 27th, Key club aided in the TC 10k by handing out water to the participants. As usual, we had our Key Club meetings every Thursday, and we had Exec meetings on Mondays.
L 2014 CLUB SPOTLIGHTS Gleneagle Key Club Gleneagle’s Key Club has just started running and we are so excited to be apart of this amazing international organization. Our first meeting was held on May 9 and it had a huge turn out. Many of Gleneagle’s students are very excited to give back to our community and help with the Eliminate project. Currently, Gleneagle’s Key Club is busy cooperating with Pinetree’s Key Club to host an Amazing Race Event. We have helped brainstorm and finalize the list of games that will be in the Amazing Race. The money that will be raised from the Amazing Race will go towards the Eliminate Project. Gleneagle is thrilled to be apart of and we can’t wait for the upcoming events.
DIVISION 13/15/17 APRIL Killarney Key Club This month honestly nothing much happened at Killarney Key Club. We introduced ourselves to the club as the 2014-2015 term's new exec team. We talked about the possibilities of doing Rustic Pathways next year, as a possible divisional event and as a club we decided on Costa Rica most likely during spring break next year. We haven't gone into detail for this yet and it all really depends if we get enough interest. We are also doing a raffle fundraiser this week for Eliminate Week. We are raffling off a pair of Nike Freeruns. For the members, we found two volunteer opportunities in this coming month, The Science Fair Fun Run and The Children's Hospital Child Run. We hope to have more upcoming fundraisers and volunteer opportunities and to recruit more new members !
L 2014 CLUB SPOTLIGHTS Pinetree Key Club In the month of April, Pinetree Key Club was busy putting together our plans for our Amazing Race event. After getting permission to host this event we immediately organized planning committees to brainstorm game ideas. Additionally, the new executives held our first lake clean-up . We also applied for an environmental award from the city of Coquitlam and has just been notified that we have been nominated! It is unclear whether this means we have won yet but we have been invited to the awards ceremony. We're keeping our fingers crossed!
DIVISION 13/15/17 APRIL VanTech Key Club April was a pretty busy month for Van Tech's Key Clubbers! A month filled with volunteer opportunities and planning for our upcoming events, our annual carnival 'Technival' and our Wake-A-thon. During the month of April, our club participated it several volunteer opportunities. One being the exciting annual Sun Run! Although we didn't volunteer for the actual event we took a part of the package pick up, giving the racers their shirts, etc. We also volunteered for the Kiwanis Music fest and the Pineapple challenge! In addition, we also volunteered for the Vancouver MS Walk as route marshals to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis at Stanley Park. Currently we are in the process of planning our Technival and Wake-A-thon for May.
Vancouver Westside Key Club
Vancouver Westside donated $7,000 to March of Dimes Canada today! They will be having a benefit concert; Harmonies of Hope on May 31st. Most information will be available soon!
L 2014 CLUB SPOTLIGHTS
University Hill Key Club This was a quite difficult year of fundraising. Taking into account the limited opportunities of club activities and sale of goods, it was challenging to accomplish various sales; the school policies allow only one day of food sales per month. Despite the hindrances, we were able to plan and execute an instant noodle sale in April in which approximately $110 was raised. This event provided students and staff to enjoy a widely popular snack at a cheap price. In terms of May, we had an annual bake sale in mind in which we collaborate with Me to We club in sale of pastry. However, due to the lacking support of club activities in the school and the ongoing job action, it is difficult at this point to say if the plan is viable or not. “We are not sure if this [bake sale] will be passed through the board,” said our sponsor. Also, we were planning on selling chocolate for Mother’s Day, but it was also put on hold due to job action. We are currently negotiating with the staff to make various fundraisers possible, but the reality is that our school is not particularly fond of students raising money during school time. Thank you for your support for our school’s Key Club and we will try our very best to the end of the school year.
April DCM Recap
Summary of the DCM April’s DCM was a meet-and-greet-and-eat, where a lot of you came out to Pinetree Secondary School to meet other Key Clubbers and our new officers! We had lots of fun playing ice breakers with each other and were able to strengthen our inter-club bonds and friendships. After, we presented our new Divisional Appointees, Kevin Park and Miguel Oreta, from Pinetree Secondary. I presented our goals for the division, including our upcoming June retreat, October social, and summer fundraisers. We also introduced our newest club to the division, Gleneagle Secondary, a Coquitlam club hoping to be chartered by the end of the school year. We then ate a lot of food together, including Beetroot Brownies, Palmiers, Apple Pie, Orange Meringue Pie, and pizza! We were also able to have miracle minute and were able to raise quite a bit. Thanks to everyone who came out, and I hope to see you all next month!

One baby dies every 9 minutes from maternal and neonatal tetanus
160 babies die each day from maternal and neo-natal Tetanus.
38 countries remain at high risk for maternal and neo-natal tetanus.
Kiwanis will help 61 million mothers and their future babies.
The Eliminate Project raises money for women in multiple countries that are effected by Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The effects are excruciating - newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and have extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival and the baby dies within 7 days of being alive. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease.
It only takes $1.80 to provide 3 tetanus vaccinations to one mother.

During the 2013-2014 term, the Pacific Northwest District aimed to raise $24,000— or, $2 for each Key Clubber in our district. Not only were we able to surpass this goal, we were able to triple it! In total, we raised $80,778.40. This could not be possible without the help of each and every one of you. Thank– you! <3
Key Clubbers Against Human Trafficking
To my Key Club friends: Let me start by saying thank you! You have established yourselves as leaders amongst your peers by making a conscious effort to volunteer your time and effort toward those things most important to you. Human trafficking is real and it is everywhere. In the United States it is a massive and growing industry with billions of dollars changing hands annually. Girls and boys as young as 11 years old are sold into slavery. The average age of entry into the life of prostitution is 13. The average life expectancy? 7 years! You have taken an important first step in the fight against human trafficking. That is to educate yourself. As with anything in life, knowledge is power. Educating yourself on matters you are passionate about takes constant effort. In order to stay engaged, you will need to learn all that you can about the problem in order to combat it effectively. Never underestimate your own sphere of influence. One person, who is properly motivated by their passion, can make a huge difference. Maybe your gift is fundraising. Maybe it is networking with others through social media. Maybe your parents or your friend's parents are influential community leaders who just need to have the problem properly explained to them. You never know what will happened once a seed has been planted. Det JD Banks Seatac Street Crimes K.C.S.O. (Courtesy of Kiwanian Jessica Anne Smith)
