In the midst of serene nature and fluctuating weather conditions lies the great Pacific Northwest District (PNW). The Pacific Northwest is geographically the largest district of Key Club International. The district spans from Western Canada to Northern California: with Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and the pan-handle of Idaho in between. The Pacific Northwest encompasses nearly 1.8 million square miles and includes over 300 clubs that operate under 44 divisions. Through rain or shine, snow or hail, Key Clubbers in the Pacific Northwest dedicate countless hours to their communities and internationally, and are always Proud 'N' Willing to serve!
It’s raining, it’s pouring and PNW is soaring above the rest, ‘cause we’re the best, Pacific Northwest!

MESSAGE FROM LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR PATRICIA Hey Key Clubbers, Although most of us are on that 3-month-long, extended version of summer that we weren't expecting, Key Club is always here to fill up your days! If you’re completely new to Key Club and you just happened upon this newsletter, keep reading to see what we’re all about! Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. It is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through service to others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities. Here in the Greater Mainland, we strive to do just that in our own, unique, Canadian way. We’ve completely revamped our look for upcoming school year and we’re so excited to do so much more in service together. And just because school isn’t yet in session doesn’t mean that we are unable to serve!

UPCOMING DIVISIONAL EVENTS
Hey Key Clubbers! As the beginning of the school year approaches (hopefully), we want to start the season with a service event and also another opportunity to get to know some of your fellow 13/15/17 divisional members. Killarney, Pinetree, and VanTech have created this joint service project to help get to know each other on a more concentrated level. Hopefully there will be more joint projects with other clubs as well! On THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th at 2:00PM, we encourage you to come out to CENTRAL PARK in Burnaby and help us better the environment by cleaning up the area. We will be meeting at the intersection between Kingsway and Boundary near the Swangard Stadium.

MEET OUR INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE TASHRIMA Hey Pacific-Northwest! My name is Tashrima Hossain, and I’d like to introduce myself as the new International Trustee for your district. It is such an honor to be in your service, primarily by ensuring that your voices are heard at the international level during the upcoming year. I’m excited to join the PNW moose; I’ve already received so much enthusiasm from the Board, I’ve heard many great things about PNW, and I can’t wait to see all the great achievements your district has in store. To let you know a little about myself, I am from Cypress, Texas, which is a suburban area adjacent to the Houston border. In addition to Key Club, I devote much of my time to debate and Student Council— which often leaves with very little time for sleep! As a result, I’m a bit of a grandma, and I like spending much of my free time sleeping, reading, or just hanging out with friends. For those of you who would like to know more about my duties as International Trustee, I have a few basic responsibilities: attending International Board meetings, participating in a maximum of two district visits, and acting as a representative of the international level of Key Club. In addition, Governor Lisa and I completed a Governor-Trustee agreement, which identified the main expectations Lisa has of me, as your district’s Trustee; many of said goals revolve around constant communication and building positive Sister District relations—all of which are means to ensure that I effectively represent your views on the international level. Additionally, I serve with Jenalee Beazley, Rip Livingston, Liz Moore, and Nicole Lema on the Growth and Communications Committee. There, we predominantly focus on fostering a connection between advisors and Kiwanis clubs, making Key Club a school-wide name, creating a “cool factor” for Key Club, empowering local clubs to publicize their work, creating a s trategic growth plan for KCI, and creating an annual club census. We already have a very specific set of goals and action steps for the first quarter; I plan to update you all with any progress in that arena. During my term, I will stay committed to the goals I campaigned with, but more than that, I intend to actively serve as a resource for you all. If you have questions about amendments, elections, service, or general Key Club knowledge, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’m here as a resource, friend, and assistant in any way you may need. Call me, email me, Facebook me— I’m always ready to lend a hand.

Hello, Key Clubbers! My name is Maria Palazzolo, and I am so thankful to be your 2014-2015 Key Club International President! I was elected at the International Convention in Anaheim, California, about a month ago. It is a privilege to serve you and the rest of our 267,000 members. As Key Clubbers, we have a unique perspective of the world. We, as teenagers, get to make lasting impacts within our communities and throughout the world. I find it absolutely amazing that our organization is made of so many selfless individuals with one mission: to positively change the world. As your International President, one of my main goals is to make Key Club International more accessible to provide more ideas and opportunities to make your club the best it can be. This can be done through: • Webinars o On topics such as: The $.50 dues increase Grants available to fund club projects, such as the Youth Opportunities Fund {more information here: http://www.keyclub.org/service/fund/yof.aspx} Twitter chats with International Board members Increased interaction through social media We will also be promoting the Eliminate Project, which is the Kiwanis family’s campaign to raise $110 million by the end of 2015 to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the face of the planet. It nears its completion at the end of the year, and we need to work tirelessly to meet our goal. I will work with our International Vice President, Kevin Zhang, and our eleven International Trustees to meet these goals to make this year a productive one for our organization. I hope to see all of you at our International Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, next summer! Imagine 2,000 people who are just as focused on helping others as you are. It’s an absolutely amazing time. If you have any questions about Key Club International, International Convention, or would just like to talk to me, feel free to email me! Have a great year, and thank you for all that you do in your homes, schools, and communities! Yours in service, Maria Palazzolo Key Club International President ipmariapalazzolo@gmail.com

On August 4th, Key Clubbers from all around the Pacific Northwest District came together at Auburn Mountainview High School for #SEATTLERALLY 2014. Being a day full of icebreakers, officer training, photobombs, fun, and spirit, it truly was a Magical World of Service! #SEATTLERALLY 2014 had the pleasure of listening to former Kiwanis International President Sylvester Neal as he reflected on his years serving on the International Kiwanis board. His dedication to service and his caring attitude are an inspiration to all. This year, the spirit stick was awarded to Division 32! Not only were they super spirited but, they also showed respect and positivity at the event. Congratulations to them! Thank you to all that attended and I hope everyone had fun. Can't wait until next year for Seattle Rally 2015!

SEATTLE RALLY RECAP
July's DCM was a fun day at Kitsilano Beach. We had ice breakers, all of us running barefoot across the hot sand playing animal, as well as some of our other usual ice breakers. We then convened for our usual role call and club reports, as well as some details about Canada Rally 2014. We then let everyone have some free time around the beach, some going for a cool dip, others playing volleyball, and others still simply socializing. Some of our members also went around the beach collecting money for our miracle minute, asking both key clubbers and passersby for spare change. In the end, we raised enough money to dunk Patricia into the ocean! To see this video, check out our division's Facebook page!

I'm going to be completely honest here; being on the Canada Rally Planning Committee was the highlight of my entire summer. I initially joined the committee expecting to just assist in planning an event with other key clubbers throughout the division. What I didn't expect were the sleepless nights, the numerous meetings, the constant stress and the remarkable individuals that went through these very things with me. From the very first meeting to the last candy piece of candy being eaten; being on the Canada Rally Planning Committee has kept me on my toes and allowed me to form substantial bonds. Veronica Vivero VanTech President Canada Rally made this summer the best yet. I’m beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to work with and get to know some of the executives in my division. Devoting my summer to Key Club was hectic, busy, and absolutely wonderful all at once. I never thought the stress of trying to organize workshops, speakers and meals would be so exciting. On the day of the event, setting up the venue got me working out more than I have over the past year, running back and forth between buildings and risking my life to put up streamers. Thankfully, the $1221.43 we made for the Eliminate Project forgives all the casualties. I can’t wait for all the future Key Club events that await! Laura Chang Pinetree
Being a part of the Canada Rally Planning Committee was a pretty “sweet” experience. Although there were a few bumps in road, looking back on it now, I realize that all of the sleep deprivation and frustration was worth it. Helping plan Canada Rally allowed me to meet and work with some of the most dedicated and passionate people I have ever met. Not only that, Canada Rally allowed me to learn more about Key Club and the Eliminate Project; this being valuable to me as I am a part of a newly formed club. In short, I had a great time and am excited to see what comes next. Mariska Cho Dr. Charles Best VP

Being a part of the planning committee for Canada Rally 2014 was really a highlight in my summer. Through the whole planning process up to the date of the rally, I was able to meet and work with other amazing Key Clubbers from different schools. It also felt really good to know that I was a part of creating such a wonderful event for our division!! On the day of the rally, preparing everything at the venue early in the morning allowed me to see what the few weeks of planning had resulted in. The rally went smoothly, and I heard many Key Clubbers compliment and thank the planning committee for the "super fun day". I am both happy and thankful that we raised $1221.43 for the Eliminate Project, and that our division was able to come together to have some fun bonding time. Melody Zhang PW President

Sweet Tooth for Service
On Wednesday, August 20th, Key Clubbers from Division 13/15/17 and Division 18 gathered on the beautiful University of British Columbia campus to learn more about and celebrate service. Not only was #CANADARALLY2014 a wonderful opportunity for Key Clubbers to come together and get inspired by experiencing Key Club to another level, but we were also able to reach out to other schools in British Columbia that are interested in starting their own clubs and to join our K-Family. Over 120 Key Club, Kiwanis and Circle K members all came together to satisfy their Sweet Tooth for Service and we were able to raise $1221.43 for the Eliminate Project! In the end, we hope that you all had a pretty SWEET

day.
In Service and Compassion, Canada Rally Chair Lieutenant Governor Patricia Xie The many long days and nights that I spent working with our committee organizing Canada Rally all paid off when I saw every single smiling face at UBC that day. From past Key Clubbers and beloved Kiwanians to friends who weren’t even members yet, I felt like I really got to meet and interact with some new people. Seeing those new members smiling and cheering with us is what really got my spirit up throughout the day. Of course, seeing our Lieutenant Governors from Division 13/15/17 and Division 18 taking pies to the face for Miracle Minute could have contributed. Besides the boxes of donuts and the buffet of candy, it was really the feeling of friendship between all of us present that really made this one sweet rally! Miguel Oreta Divisional Secretary

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT WHAT IS THE ELIMINATE PROJECT ? Kiwanis International and UNICEF have teamed up to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus from earth in a project called The Eliminate Project. Maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT) is a highly preventable disease that kills one baby every nine minutes. This causes babies to suffer from painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light – turning the joy of childbirth into a tragedy. A simple $1.80 vaccine can protect a mother and her future babies from this horrible disease. With our joint efforts, we can eliminate MNT from the face of this planet.
20
PNW DISTRICT GOALS FOR THE ELIMINATE PROJECT Maternal and neonatal tetanus kills approximately 60,000 innocent babies and numerous women each year. In order to achieve our goal of eliminating MNT from this planet by 2015, more than 100 million mothers and their babies must be immunized and $110 million are needed. Kiwanis and UNICEF have joined hands in fighting MNT and need our help. Our goal for the Pacific Northwest District is to raise $50,000 by DCON 2015!
ELIMINATE AT SCHOOL Want to do something new and exciting for the upcoming school year that not only engages your student body but also contributes to the better of society? Bring The Eliminate Project to your school! The rest of the school year, your peers and staff will be focusing on fundraising for The Eliminate Project. Talk to your Student Government and Administration to get their support and approval. Here are some easy fundraising ideas that your school can incorporate to prevent mothers and their future babies from this deadly disease: Donate $1.80 to Eliminate per dance ticket bought/for any/all school dances; host miracle minutes during assemblies; hold a coin drive and make it a class competition; have donation jars located around the school and at concession stands; sell merchandise. Make The Eliminate Project your School Project and let’s end MNT together!

Scare up some funds and fun this Halloween by participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. It’s a great opportunity to collect donations instead of candy or to bring club members together for a fabulous event or party. All money collected by Kiwanis-family members through Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF will once again support The Eliminate Project and help save moms and babies. Did you know? A proud participant in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF since 1994, Key Club has raised more than US$6 million for child survival and development programs around the world—from efforts to eliminate iodine deficiency disorder to HIV/AIDS initiatives in Kenya and Swaziland. Starting in 2012 Key Club joined other Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF to raise money for The Eliminate Project.
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Starting September 2, UNICEF will be shipping coin boxes to clubs that have participated in Trick-orTreat for UNICEF during the past two years. A box of supplies should be shipped to your school by September 15. Find the list of clubs that will receive boxes at the following link: www.TheEliminateProject.org/trickortreat. Clubs can host a talent show, dance, trunk-ortreat, pumpkin carving or decorating contest, haunted house, zombie run— or whatever you think will be the most fun. Encourage sponsoring Kiwanis clubs to help and become eligible for the Unity Award. Finally, be sure to remind all clubs to submit donations along with the The Eliminate Project gift form.

The product of a do-good mentality, love for design, and a little bit of teen angst, my name is Jenny Zhang and I am your Pacific Northwest District Editor. I am a dragon from Division 32 and I have two very cute dogs. I also have this wanderlust that has taken me to faraway countries alone to test my horizons and my ability to dance to new music. Paraguayan food is my life.
My job in our district is to share our impact with as many people as possible. With every hand you shake, piece of trash you pick up, and smile you flash, you as a Key Clubber have the potential to astronomically change the future for the better. ReadESPRESSO, the Pacific Northwest Key Club District newsletter, serve your community as much as possible, and stay feeling good! Hey PNW!
