What are the Myths and Legends surrounding your Zodiac Sign? Read more to discover the fascinating background...

Aries March 21 - April 20 Aries is the 1st Sign of the Zodiac, represented as the Ram. Jason and the Argonauts went on an Odyssey in search of the Golden Fleece. The ram had originally been presented to Nephele by Mercury when her husband took a new wife, Ino, who persecuted Nephele's children. To keep them safe, Nephele sent Phrixus and Helle away on the back of the magical ram who flew away to the East. Helle fell into the Hellespont (now the Dardanelles), but Phrixus made it safely to Colchis on the eastern shore of the Black Sea. Phrixus then slew the ram and presented its Golden Fleece to the King, Aeetes. Later Jason captured the fleece.

Taurus April 21 – May 21 Taurus is the 2nd Sign of the Zodiac, represented as the fore part of a bull. It is the snow white Bull which took Europe across the sea to Crete. The bull was Zeus in disguise and Europe bore him three children - Minos, Rhadamanthys and Sarpedon. Minos became king of Crete and his queen, PasiphaÍ, gave birth to a bull-headed son called the Minotaur which was later slain by Theseus in the Labyrinth. Some say that Taurus is a later bull that was slain by Hercules.

Gemini 22 May – 21 June Gemini is the 3rd Sign of the Zodiac, represented by the Greeks as two children. The Greek twins are usually Castor and Pollux. Castor and Pollux were members of Jason's crew aboard the Argo. They were the sons of Queen Leda of Sparta, but had different fathers. Pollux's father was Zeus, and that of Castor was King Tyndareus. The job of the twins was to protect the mariners, appearing, in the rigging, as St. Elmo's fire Cancer (the Crab), which refers to the next zodiac constellation.

Cancer 22 June – 23 July Cancer is the 4th Sign of the Zodiac, represented by the Greeks as a Crab. The most widely accepted story is that Cancer was sent by the goddess Hera to attack Hercules while he was battling with the Hydra on the second of his labours. During the struggle, the crab was crushed beneath the feet of Hercules. As a reward for its heroic, but futile, efforts, Hera placed the crab among the stars. The Greek year began in Cancer, on the new moon after the Summer Solstice, and the story is of each new-year following on the heels of the old.

Leo 24 July – 23 August Leo is the 5th Sign of the Zodiac, represented by the Greeks as a Lion. Leo represents the Nemean lion slain by Hercules on the first of his 12 labours. Leo had a skin that could not be punctured by iron, stone or bronze. However, Hercules strangled it to death. Leo also features in ancient Egyptian religion. The Egyptians worshipped the celestial lion, and the ancient scribes used it to predict the flooding of the Nile.

Virgo 24 August – 23 September Virgo is the 6th Sign of the Zodiac, represented by the Greeks as a Virgin or 'maid'. The constellation of Virgo is associated with the story of Demeter and her daughter Persephone. For the ancient Greeks, the story of Demeter and Persephone helped to explain why the seasons change. When Persephone wad kidnapped by Hades, she lived in the underworld, her Mother Demeter was so heart broke during these months, that Winter occurred.

Libra 24 September – 23 October Libra is the 7th Sign of the Zodiac and is remarkable for being the only one not represented by a living creature. Early zodiacs did not recognise the sign for it was only created in Roman times to separate and maintain the balance between the Virgo - Scorpio pair who are, according to Genesis, Eve crushing the Serpent's head and the Serpent, or Scorpion, striking at the Virgin's heel - a story with its basis in the turn of the year at the new moon following the Autumnal Equinox.

Scorpio 24 October – 22 November Scorpio is the 8th Sign of the Zodiac, represented by a Scorpion. Until separated by Libra, the scorpion stung the heels of Virgo at the Autumnal Equinox, while she crushed it underfoot. Scorpio is the Serpent in Genesis. In Greek myth, it was placed in the zodiac by Hera as a reward for killing Orion the Hunter. The story is similar to the Greek new-year tale of Cancer and its roots go back through Jewish myth to the Babylonian legend of the hero, Gilgamesh, when the New Year began at the Autumnal Equinox.

Sagittarius 23 November – 21 December Sagittarius is the 9th Sign of the Zodiac, represented by the archer. The constellation of Sagittarius depicts a creature called centaur, which has the body and head of a man and the hindquarters of a horse. He is named after Cheiron, the most famous and king of the centaurs. He was semi-divine, as he was the son of god Poseidon. He was the oldest and wisest of all the centaurs and very strong. In fact, he was so famous, that many kings had trusted their sons to teach them. Among the most famous of his students were Hercules, and Jason, who later became the leader of the Argonauts.

Capricorn 22 December – 20 January Capricorn is the 10th Sign of the Zodiac. The story of Capricorn is associated with the birth of Zeus. As the story goes, when Rhea gave birth to baby Zeus, she feared that her cruel husband Cronus would devour her child. So, she secretly took her child to Crete. There, he was nursed and cared for by Amaltheia, a goat nymph who looked after baby Zeus with the greatest love and devotion. Zeus did not forget his goat-mother Amaltheia, who had nursed him so lovingly. In recognition of all she had done for him, he set her image among the rest of stars on the Greek zodiac, as the constellation of Capricorn.

Aquarius 21 January – 19 February Aquarius is the 11th sign of the zodiac, represented by a young man bearing either a pitcher of water or a cup. Aquarius, the water carrier, is Ganymede, a beautiful Phrygian youth, son of Tros, King of Troy. Zeus took a fancy to Ganymedes and took him to be the cup bearer to the gods, previously the duty of Hera's daughter, Hebe. The position was considered to be highly distinguished, since the person who was assigned the duty of the cup bearer, was responsible for pouring into the glasses of the Olympians the divine drink called nectar. This was the special drink that bestowed on the gods their eternal youth.

Pisces 20 February – 20 March Pisces is the 12th and last sign of the zodiac, represented by two fishes. The Greek myth, echoing that of Capricorn, tells how the erotic love gods, Eros and Aphrodite, were turned into fishes when they leapt into water to escape the wrath of the storm god, Typhon. The usual images of Pisces show the two fishes head to tail, like the oriental yin-yang symbol, to emphasise the male and female aspects. This hides the true constellation image of fish tied by their tails and hanging like plumb lines divided by the square of Pegasus - seen by the Babylonians as the Ark of the Deluge.
