SUFFRAGETTE (12A) Dir. Sarah Gavron | 2015 | 106 mins
Nearly 100 years after smashing shop windows and blowing up letterboxes, the British suffragettes finally get a film they deserve. And thank god it’s not a pretty-pretty sugarcoated period drama. Writer Abi Morgan and director Sarah Gavron’s tough, raw, bleak-looking film makes the suffragettes’ dilemma feel immediate and real. You feel the knife-edge danger of women risking everything: sacked from their jobs, locked up in prison, force fed, separated from their children. But if not them, who? THE PROGRAM (15)
EVEREST (12A)
Dir. Stephen Frears | 2015 | 103 mins
Dir. Baltasar Kormákur | 2015 | 121 mins
An Irish sports journalist becomes convinced that Lance Armstrong’s performances during the Tour de France victories are fueled by banned substances. With this conviction, he starts hunting for evidence that will expose Armstrong. Where the film excels is in examining how it feels to be unable to accept defeat, even when you know victory was ill-gained.
Inspired by the incredible true events surrounding a treacherous attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain in 1996, “Everest” documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest of elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breath-taking struggle for survival. THE BIG KNIGHTS (U)
Dir. Chris Hughes | 2015 | 90 mins
Dir. Neville Astley | 2015 | 70 mins
On the 25th of November 2000, in a warehouse in Central Manchester, 69 lots from the Hacienda were auctioned off… Do you own the Dancefloor? is the first documentary production to come out of the newly formed Shiny Brick Films, and produced in collaboration with Edinburgh production company Heehaw.
In the far off land of Borovia, where dragons are fierce, witches are wicked, scientists are insane, the economy is bad and television is in black & white, stands Castle Big: home of The Big Knights.
The film tells of what happened when the legendary Hacienda nightclub was knocked down and sold off at auction in a warehouse in central Manchester back in Nov 2000. As well as telling the story of the actual day of the auction, the film tracks down what happened to the parts of the club itself. The documentary isn’t just about the Hacienda, it’s about the people that had such an experience there that they felt the desire to own bricks, toilets, exit signs and even pieces of the hallowed dance floor.
