Meryl Streep & Hugh Grant : Florence Foster Jenkins
1
WELCOME This is always a funny time of year as a cinema owner. On the one hand you want to welcome the first real warmth of the springtime sunshine, the bursting to life of nature after the winter’s hibernation. But on the other hand, you can’t help but worry whether your films be good enough to lure people away from their BBQs and their gardens of an evening... So we’re lucky that we’ve been able to put together such a strong programme of film, theatre and events as we head into the warmer months! As well great films with great casts, such as ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’ with Meryl Streep starring as the operatic sensation of the 1920s, Dame Helen Mirrem starring alongside the late and great Alan Rickman in ‘Eye in the Sky’ and our town’s own Eve HedderwickTurner appearing in Tim Burton’s ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’, we’ve also been able to bring you live recorded theatre from Shakespeare’s Globe and the National Theatre and even live recorded opera from La Scala in Milan. So you can all enjoy the days of sunshine as well as some very fine evenings with exceptional company in a darkened room... Happy viewing!

SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE In a year full of celebrations commemorating the 400 year anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, we’re delighted to team up with Globe On Screen to bring you three thrilling productions from the world’s most famous stage to our Derbyshire town: Measure for Measure, Shakespeare’s tragi-comic exploration of sexual politics and social justice; The Merchant of Venice, starring Jonathan Pryce as the bitter and detested Jewish moneylender Shylock; and Richard II, Shakespeare’s account of the king’s downfall and the acquisition of the throne by Henry IV. Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre was built in 1997 as a faithful reconstruction of the original wooden theatre, in which The Bard’s plays were first performed, and is made entirely of English Oak.

VICTORIA (15)
Dir. Sebastian Schipper, 2015, 138 mins
Shot over two hours in a single, dazzling take, Victoria is one of the year’s most impressive technical achievements – but it’s more than mere gimmick. The film - a winner at the Berlin film festival – signals actor-turned-director Sebastian Schipper as a major talent behind the lens. Victoria is a huge logistical and artistic gamble; one which pays off astonishingly. The film begins in the vein of a neon-lit Gaspar Noe film, with the film’s titular heroine (played by the fiercely talented Laia Costa), dancing in an underground Berlin club to a throbbing techno beat. It’s an intoxicating kickoff to a film whose second act swiftly descends into hell. WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES WED 4 MAY, 7:30pm

All four operas are £15 per day - so you can enjoy all 15 hours of opera for only £60. See our website for details. WED 27 APRIL, 7pm MON 2 MAY, 3:30pm

A year in the life of a family of north Pennines tenant farmers told with affection but without sentimentality (life and death are unflinchingly intertwined), it gets under the skin of its subjects and the tough lives they lead. The Living wage
We’ve been a Living Wage Employer for over a year now, having committed to recognise the contribution and worth of all our great staff by paying £8.25p/hr to all staff over 18 (under 18s are paid £6.50). We’ve also supported the roll out of The National Living Wage, announced by the Chancellor in July last year which, although lower (£7.20 for over 25s), is set in Law and so is a valuable step to achieving fairer rates of pay and therefore a fairer society. The Living Wage is independently calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK and so has a separate rate for London (£9.40) and is adopted purely on a voluntary basis. We’re very proud to be one of the 2,300 employers currently in the UK paying the Living Wage. So, by coming to watch a film at The Northern Light, you’re helping create a more just society! Ok, maybe that’s stretching it just a little...

The Royal Oak
LAST ORDERS... Very soon John and Avis will be calling ‘last orders’ for the very last time behind the bar at the best little pub in Derbyshire - The Royal Oak. Not only have they been role models to us as licensees, but also as hosts, business owners, pillars of the community and wonderful, generous friends. We’ve enjoyed so many great nights in their company, they will be sorely missed, but we wish them well in their retirement and wish all the best to Jim and Sarah, who have the unenviable task of filling the boots of, probably, the most liked and respected couple in Wirksworth. So from everyone at The Northern Light Cinema, but from Paul and Esther in particular - John and Avis, cheers!
OUR GOOD POLICY North End is our favourite street in town. We live here, we work here, we tend to drink here too. That’s why we ask all our customers to help us minimise any disturbance on the street and help us be good neighbours. So if you arrive by car, we ask you not to park on North End itself, as lots of our neighbours

rely on on-street parking. There’s plenty of parking elsewhere in town. See the map on the back page for details. If you smoke, we ask you to do so away from the cinema but also away from residential houses - there’s a handy bench across the road at the top of Greenway Croft.
Finally, when you leave, please do so quietly as some of our neighbours are elderly and others have young children, who may have retired to bed by the time you leave. This will all help keep us in the good books with our neighbours - which is always a good thing. Thanks for your help! Paul & Esther
