HE GENERATOR - Aerospace cooperative of Mureaux, France - 2017 Mutualisation of archives and associated services

6

It’s not surprising that like in plenty other places, the metallic boxes grappe substracted itself from its environment, in order to sprawl and to find autarky. Doing so, the territorial peculiarity, the Genius Loci of the place has been buried under the developments of one of a kind industry, the Aerospace. This milieu turned into an impregnable fortress, preventing inhabitants from enjoying their landscape, between the Forest of Verneuil and the River la Seine. If Ariane colonises space, taking-off from Earth to find new territories, couln’t Airbus subtly reconnects itself to earthlings where it settled down? How could the industrial area of Airbus and its subcontractors be inputted into the daily life of the inhabitants of the Mureaux town ? The Cooperative blooms, it is the link, the mounting and the federation of several entities to gain in economical strength and working productivity. Its clustering creates a complex ecosystem which allows flexibility and visibility toward a great public. The Archives building is the Totem at the macroscopic scale, while being a sleeping and static programm generating multiple externalities of its peripheries : a confidential heart, even more, an iconic Monument. What we call an Interrelationship Generator. Then, just as in our solar system where planets gravitate around the Sun : programmes activate around the Treasure Chest, which feeds them and allows them to exist. Its bark cladding protects the ressources. Going from the Forum to the Promontory and to the Belvedere, we brush knowledge accumulated for ages, throughout an emblematic stairway that breaches the Archives. At this stage, the busy business man meets the curious ordinary citizen : intriguing situation. This meeting is specially remarkable along the crossing from the River to the Woods, via the footbridge over the train rails. Beyond a simple walk through path, it is also a stopover, a promontory overhanging calcicolous prairies preserved on the top of the exhibitions spaces. Thus, these compose incredible biodiversity reserves in a mineral urban environment. This promontory is sheltered in a forest of timber pillars, that support the Archives building. The original sawmill of mister Coutin, the site former programme, vanishes but the atmosphere stays still, through the care given to vegetation. Indeed, the outskirt brownfields are protected during all the construction phase in order to develop freely and finely act as a forest edge. The borders are the sanctuary. They protect and enable to glimpse at the same time, in an other manner that by the oftenly used barbed wire. Eventually, the artificially digged timber stocking pit now acts as a carpark, respecting the rainwater natural cycle with a porous yet solid ground. Likewise, the clearing spread between the subsidiary programmes to form a place allowing for diverse uses.
