Alumni Endownment Fund
The
cumulative donations received from alumni is treated as the principal of the endowment fund and is maintained in perpetuity. The principal is the basis of sustained annual income from the various investments forming a reliable and viable source to support the many beneficial projects for students. The Finance Committee of the HKUST Council, the supreme governing body of the University, oversees the investment activities of the AEF to ensure its continuity. The AEF is part of HKUST’s five year strategic plan (until 2020) for alumni engagement and will provide a focused objective for alumni to make donations, as well as to nurture the culture of giving. We hope this initiative will establish a legacy where alumni continue to contribute to the growth of this collective wealth, and realize the benefits that are delivered to the development of their alma mater.

the fund increasing in value each year, more than doubling of interest income, we have been able to support a wide variety of events, and to reach out to more students. We have been supporting these students on events where they may have previously lacked the financial resources to achieve and execute effectively. HKUST believes in the importance of students not only exceling in academia, but also for them to have the opportunity to explore and cultivate their undeveloped potential and become an accountable global citizen.

Personal goals and objectives and Maintaining balance in school grades and the Athletic Scholarship for New elite sports performance Undergraduate Students Since commencing my university studies, The Athletic Scholarship for New UG Students from HKUST AEF felt like a gift from heaven to me, as it helps me to achieve my dreams of continuing to pursue my journey in Taekwondo, but just as importantly, it allows me to stay home in Hong Kong. HKUST’s recognition of the importance of sports is so uniquely beneficial. This scholarship means so much to athletes in Hong Kong, as we often struggle financially. Unfortunately, the government only subsidizes certain sports; and contrary to popular belief, there are no cash prizes involved in competitions. We have to pay for our own physiotherapists and any other expenses. This scholarship therefore allows me to have one less burden. Not only is the scholarship a form of recognition, it also encourages me to continue on this path. One of my goals is to attend the next Asia Olympics. I value it dearly.
in addition to sport, I have discovered many more interests in other aspects of my life. This summer, I will be attending an internship at Ant Financial Services Group in Beijing, to learn about the fintech industry. Attending university has made me realize the importance of time management. Since all of my classmates are so smart, I’ve had to be diligent too! My biggest tip is stick to a plan. It is so easy to chat with friends after class and miss your scheduled study time.
A woman participating in a male dominated sport As I’ve matured in this sport, I have observed that many female taekwondo players drop out as the level of commitment increases with the level of difficulty. Training mostly with males actually makes me work harder. As I always strive to equal or better my male counterparts. But it does mean I need to compensate in natural biological and muscular strength differences.

Interview: Jessica Chan Cheuk-lam Recipient of the AEF Athletic Scholarship 2015 & 2016 I am a second year student going into third year in global business. Before attending university I was a part-time athlete for the Hong Kong Sports Institute of WuShu (Chinese martial arts) specializing in Tai Chi. There, I trained 6 days a week, four to five hours per day. My first exposure to this sport was from my neighbors whose parents did WuShu. I started the first class out of curiosity. Later, I got into the Hong Kong Team for the 8-13 years age group, this is when I seriously started on my training journey. I enjoy the new challenges and different routines this sport offers - it’s similar to the gymnastics scoring system, but we are graded on kicks, balance and the level of difficulty of each movement. This sport has allowed me to visit different places around the globe to compete. I have been to places including Russia and Turkey, where I competed in the world championships, winning silver and bronze medals in those respective competitions. Although I was doing well in my sports performance and could have been a full time athlete, I wanted to get an education. I was offered scholarships at a number of reputable schools, however I ended up choosing HKUST because of the school’s
Feature | 11 holistic approach to education. The school actually cares about athletes, encouraging students to do more sports and extra-curricular activities. It made me feel more comfortable in this environment. Since attending university, I have joined the netball team and joined the school competition. I enjoy the dynamics of the sport and the team spirit, especially since I have always performed solo in Wushu. I appreciate the communication that the team members and the coach share, it is something new and different to my previous experiences. I am also involved with “Humans of HKUST” and I am now the project leader of this “how we met” initiative, documenting and publishing the friendships and the community of HKUST. It can be hard balancing my time between school, social life and sport. The scholarship has helped me a lot in terms of funding my tuition and living expenses, which in turn allows me the freedom to be involved and to experience all these other activities. Having the financial freedom allows me to grow and to focus on what I want to pursue. My friends are amazing too, and whenever I feel stressed, I talk to them, as they share tips about coping with stress and encourage me to keep going. Often, I realize that my friends are actually doing a lot more than I am. I really enjoy being at HKUST, the people here are more goal focused and know what they have to do to achieve them.

enrolls more than 5,000 international students each year, and no matter where their hometown is, we ensure that every student is taken care of. For local students, the HKSAR subsidizes students with exchange scholarships and bursaries; but HKUST realizes the importance of also supporting non-local students. The program has supported 28 non-local students with a total of HK$700,000 through exchange or outreach programs. We encourage all students to participate in exchanges as this allows them to gain valuable insights and experiences, while also strengthen students’ personal development and broadening their horizons.

During
the exchange program, I was staying in on-campus housing. My accommodation was called I-House, which stands for International House. As the name suggests, all of the occupants of the I-House were international students studying at University of California San Diego. This gave me a very good opportunity to interact with people from different backgrounds. My apartment was very diverse itself. My roommates were from the United States, Peru and Chile. I met and interacted with people from all corners of the world while living at the I-House.”

One of the best things I have learnt from these five
months in Australia is the art of cooking. Prior to my exchange studies, I had never stepped foot into a kitchen to cook up a meal as it is just so convenient to find food since I lived on campus back at HKUST. Eating out in Australia is extremely expensive and by cooking at home, one can save more than half of the budget allocated for food. Since accommodation was not provided by the exchange institution, I had to look for one myself upon arrival in Sydney. It was no easy task as I had inspected over 20 places before I managed to find a decent one. Fortunately it was during this time that I received an email from HKUST notifying me that I was granted a scholarship by the HKUST Alumni Endowment Fund. I was truly overjoyed and this meant that I could increase my budget for accommodation… beyond that of my cockroach infested place!”

during competitions, the allocation of funds to student activities enables complementary nonmonetary support of students, and may include such things as traveling and accommodation expenses of coaches and officials, who are so integral to the development of our rising stars.
Besides academic achievements, HKUST recognizes the importance of balance. We focus on the significance of personality building and encourage students to explore their undiscovered potential. We therefore enthusiastically encourage students to participate in extracurricular activities.
As some extracurricular activities may be prohibitively costly, we try to reduce those barriers through funding. To date, we have funded over 100 students, with a total of HK$700,000 over the years. This year, student activities have included Student Leadership Training, Asian Universities Basketball Invitation Tournament in Macau, CSR initiatives and sponsorship of internships at NGOs.

AEF Community Services Awards The act of serving is a merit that should be encouraged and also used to inspire others. HKUST encourages students to be involved within their community, to be global citizens, and to share with those who are less fortunate. Those who demonstrate leadership, enthusiasm and compassion in creating long-term community programs that affect change are recognized by our AEF Community Services Awards.

By creating these workshops and allowing the students with intellectual disabilities to volunteer for the elderly, we hope that they can feel a sense of accomplishment. While they may have disabilities, they also have the ability to serve others and create meaningful memories and contribute wonderful ideas to society.

Besides advocating for animal rights and protecting the environment, I hope to focus on helping those with intellectual disabilities because I believe they deserve equal opportunities and be treated like everyone else.
