FIRST TO FIGHT! The Heroes of Vietnam First Platoon

I
t was November 21, 1967 – LBJ was president, “Incense and Peppermints” topped the music charts, and First Platoon’s 35 young Marines and corpsmen were about to be ambushed by a battalion-sized enemy force of North Vietnamese Army regulars and local Vietcong in what would come to be known as the Battle at Finger Lake. Although that day was almost 52 years ago, it is still fresh in the minds of the surviving members of Vietnam First Platoon 3rd Battalion 7th Marines.
In reality, for most Vietnam combat Veterans, Vietnam is painfully present every day. When asked “when were you in Vietnam?”, many would say 52 years ago… yesterday… last night… this morning. Recently, Lubbock, Texas welcomed the men of First Platoon, a group of Marine combat veterans who fought in Vietnam and now reunite every two years for three days of camaraderie, fellowship, and remembrance. The reunion was hosted by Lubbock native Jerry Lucero, a member of First SEE FIRST TO FIGHT | PAGE 4
