“WALKING IN THE PROMISE OF GOD”

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022

G

race and peace and greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mother Brooks and I send you our warmest love and greetings as we enter the New Year. We believe the Lord for great, incredible, mind-blowing things in 2022. I challenge you to believe with us. It is our prayer that we continue to see a greater return to normalcy and the end of the pandemic in this year. As we know, it has been two years since the COVID-19 virus emerged, creating havoc throughout the entire world. It is in many ways so hard to believe that it has been two years—and in the same breath it feels like it has been so much longer. We have learned, we have adapted, we have grown, we have grieved, we have rejoiced. Across the globe, churches were forced with the age-old adage: adapt or die. And so, we changed the order of the day and become creative in developing services and building community online, finding ways to keep the people of God engaged and meeting the deep wounds that were created because of the deaths and sickness via the virus. The Lord instructed me to stay before the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World online weekly. Following the instructions of God, we were online through social media trying to keep and build the Faith of God before the saints. I never would have anticipated when the Lord gave me the theme for these four years of our administration Now It Shall Spring Forth concerning the promises of God that we would confront the greatest shared experience of our lifetime. Yet, God knows all things and sets all things in order. And, indeed, we have seen the promises of God spring forth in our lives in new, unanticipated, yet confirming ways. In year two, following the declaration that would carry us for four years, we built upon this theme declaring God’s Promise to Perform as we set our hearts in posture to rest in the promise of God to perform in our lives. The third year the Lord instructed us to be Positioned for the Promise, and we strove to put ourselves in position for the move of God in our personal lives so that we might be able to see what God has in store for us. As we transition into the last year of our first administrative term, and the culmination of this four-year journey, God is sending a prophetic and instructing Word—we have heard the promise, we have positioned ourselves for the promise, and now we are commanded to Walk in the Promise of God. I hear Isaiah, the eagle eye prophet, who writes in the Book of Isaiah 54:17 that “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.”

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

This is the verse that the Lord gave me as the foundation for this year’s theme. You see, beloved, there is a promise in this Scripture that we can hold tightly to—not just for us but for the generations that follow us. As the promises of God spring forth in our lives, we must trust that we will see the fulfillment of all that God has spoken concerning out lives, no matter what comes our way. My brothers and sisters, we can and must trust God to keep us and block everything that comes against us that is not in His Divine Will. As we Walk in the Promise of God, we must be assured that no weapon, no trial, no sickness, no heartache, nothing formed against us can stop God from doing His Divine Will in our lives as long as we do that that is right in His sight. I truly believe that now is our time to rise, to flourish in the Will of God, to live in the place of promise and let the devil know that he can’t stop us. Our faith is rooted wholly in God, and He will see us through everything that tries to stop His Will from being done in our lives. Not just for us, but for the generations that come behind us. For as God springs forth in our lives, these promises are not just for our children, but our children’s children, and their children. So, Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, let us Walk in the Promise of God, knowing that God has never gone back on His Word. He stated that All of His counsel shall stand, and we believe it to be so. We shall spring forth into all that God has declared for us, and we know that His promise shall stand against anything that tries to come against us. We want you to join us for the 2022 Summer Convention of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. as we Walk in the Promise of God. We are hopeful and prayerful that we will be able to meet in-person after two years of virtual conventions in St. Louis, Missouri, Sunday, July 31st – Saturday, Aug 6th, 2022. We continue to keep a pulse of the ebbs and flows of the COVID-19 pandemic, including variant spreads and our movement as a country toward herd immunity through vaccinations. As we engage in our ongoing planning, we are keeping in mind the health and safety of our constituents first and foremost. Please stay connected to our social media pages, follow us on Facebook and Instagram, and keep an eye on our website at www.pawinc.org for organizational and event updates. Above all else, let us remain in a posture of prayer. Prayer is what has kept us, and it will be prayer that sustains us—as an organization, as dioceses, as churches, communities and as individuals. Prayer is the key, prayer is our foundation and prayer is our future. Stay connected as we share information regarding organizational prayer initiatives and how you can stay involved. Mother Brooks and I are always praying for you and your families. We love you to life. Now let’s Walk in the Promise of God together!

FROM THE EDITOR Evangelist Neechy Dumas

Happy New Year!! As the Christian Outlook Publications team reflects on another year of change and transformation, we want to wish all of our readers, supporters and especially our new subscribers a Blessed and Happy New Year! With every end, comes a new beginning, and it is my hope that we all aim to fill this New Year with joyful memories as we continue to pursue our dreams and aspirations. I’m praying that you receive a fresh start with renewed energy and confidence throughout this New Year.

N

Now that 2021 has come to an end, I reminisce on all of the great things that the supporters of this great publication have brought us and I would be remiss not to thank all of our Pastors, Sunday School Directors, Superintendents and Teachers who have helped us make a successful transition to the online ordering system. Making a big, technological move like ours, in the middle of a global pandemic in 2020 was a challenge that we gladly accepted in an effort to provide you, our subscribers with more dedicated customer service, faster shipping, cleaner inventory and an overall Bookstore experience that you could be proud of. Thank you to our customers for over 2500 orders in our new bookstore. This is a tremendous accomplishment that would not have been possible without the consistent support of our entire Pentecostal Assemblies of the World family and subscribers. As a publication, we’ve consistently seen month-over-month growth in pre-order and overall magazine sales; a statistic that I don’t take lightly and I am perpetually grateful to all that have played a part in this success. I’d also like to thank Bishop Marion Wright, The North Carolina State Council, Sis. Betty Thomas and Roger Green for allowing the Department of Publications to share with the delegates during the October 2021 Council. Opening the doors of the NC State Council to allow us to share what we’re doing at The Christian Outlook took much time and effort, and we have not forgotten their work and labor of love.

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

I’m also grateful to our Presider, Bishop Theodore L. Brooks, Sr. to be given the opportunity to serve as the Editor-inChief of this world-renowned publication, The Christian Outlook Magazine. The Bible declares that the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord (Psalm 37:23) and most assuredly our Presiders steps have been ordered as he has prayerfully navigated the P.A.W into another year. It has truly been a pleasure to work under his anointed leadership, and I look forward to all that God has in store for us as we are “Walking In His Promise -,” our hope-filled theme for this year. It is my fervent desire that a magazine as trusted as ours, continues to be a beacon of hope in this ever-darkening world. May “the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.” (Ephesians 1:18 NKJV) Within these pages filled with challenges and triumphs, it is my earnest hope that you are inspired to earnestly believe that God hears and answers prayer by the words of Bishop Clifton Jones; that you are motivated to build your business by the testimony of Malissa Grandberry-Brown, and that you are fully equipped to follow your dreams by the journey of College Prep and Scholarships of Tenia Clayton, Esq. This year, be determined to stand on the Word of God for your life which states with promise that, “He which hath begun a good work in you, will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Phil. 1:6) Blessings, Evang. PREACHER’S CORNER

GOD’S PROMISE to HEAR &

ANSWER By Bishop Clifton Jones

Psalms 4:3 But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him.

I

t is to the advantage of every believer to know that the Lord has promised to hear and to answer. God instituted prayer to make it possible for His believing children to reach and to maintain contact with Him.

The fact that God has promised to hear and to answer, that should inflame and motivate us to keep calling upon Him, knowing He is listening to the cry of His children. Prayer and praying are far more than begging the Lord for blessings; it is to keep us in touch with and He with us. It is that constant contact that develops an on-going relationship that prepares us for our future with Him. Every time the Lord answers a prayer, it aids us to focus the more on the next level. Answered prayer is a major faith builder and confidence promoter, it keeps us freshly aware that the Lord is a keeper of His word. I encourage each of us to single out a need and present it to the Lord without wavering; when He answers, He expects us to glorify Him. We can ill afford to listen to the flesh or the devil when it comes to the promises of God to hear and answer. Let us not disappoint Him by failing to call upon Him. On the other hand, let us not call Him and fail to feel that our cry went unheard. His Word is our confidence. Whatever we find in His Holy Word, we have a right to trust it.

12

to hear and to answer. It is our privilege to make the call; His promise is to hear and answer. If the righteous fail to call, we prevent Him from answering. When we call, we can be sure He is well able to deliver. Psalms 34:17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. It serves well to keep in mind His promise to the ones that call upon Him that when we call, we have His Word of what He will do. Psalms 50:15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. Psalms 91:14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. Psalms 91:15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. May I suggest, we should not wait for trouble to start to call upon Him, neither should we stop calling because trouble raises its ugly head. The more we practice calling, the more likely we are to continue regardless to the circumstances. Our God is not intimidated by trouble. He has never seen and never will see a situation that is more powerful than Him. His record speaks for itself, what He has done, He can do it again.

Psalms 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

Jeremiah 32:17 “Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee.” Luke 1:37 “For with God nothing shall be impossible.”

Let us not keep Him waiting. Let’s make the call because He is expecting us to cry... He is just a cry away. Let us keep in mind, we are calling upon the One who has promised

Allow me to say, anyone with a God like ours, that soul is safe. We just need to keep calling upon Him..that is His will for our lives.

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

“WALKING IN THE PROMISE OF GOD”

Psalms 34:6 “This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.” Let us remember, the Lord is no respecter of a person; if ever He heard a cry, He will hear yours. Don’t keep Him waiting..call Him now and often. The Lord wants to hear from us, and we need to hear from Him. The more we see His hand, the easier it is to keep our faith fed. The Word of God is what faith feeds on, which makes answered prayers mandatory for healthy faith. Remember, the act of praying is a strong testimony that one’s faith is healthy and alive. Calling upon One that is not seen with the confidence He is there offers God what He needs to work with. The fact that others must summons God into their affairs and situations of unpleasantries, He stands ready to meet us wherever we are. Faith says to call Him. He is not afraid to enter the turbulent situation you are in. He is capable and qualified to turn things around for your good. It should be heartwarming to know the size of your problem does not reduce His ability to do exceedingly above all we can ask or think. It should be comforting to realize the more time we spend with Him, the more like Him we become. Praying goes beyond receiving blessings; it opens up a way to increase one’s relationship and stability. Psalms 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Praying introduces us to the caliber of feeling that will be enjoyed throughout eternity; it is called practicing His presence. Allow me to leave you with these thoughts. Every serious prayer needs to become serious Bible students because the more one knows about what the Word says, the more confidence he or she will have in the process of asking and receiving. 1 John 5:14 “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:” 1 John 5:15 “And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” When we load our spirits with the Word of God, we act in faith without consulting our human minds and

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

feelings. God’s Word should be the foundation upon which our prayer life is built. That is why it is impossible to overemphasize the importance of loading our spirits with the Word of God. We use God’s Word to anchor our faith. Our faith in return elevates our spirits and circumstances to an acceptable level, one that meets God’s approval giving him even more reasons to answer our cry. Psalms 34:19 “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.” Isaiah 58:9 “Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;” Isaiah 65:24 “And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” Jeremiah 33:3 “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” Luke 11:9 “And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” God’s invitation and appeal has gone out. It is up to us to take advantage of the summons to call unto Him. He will hear and answer. The fact others have cried and were heard, we should feel confident, the same will happen to us. Psalms 84:11 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” Micah 7:7 “Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.” When we listen to God’s Word, we are sure to be encouraged to make the call. He wants to hear from us, and we need to hear from Him. The sky is the limit of what we can have, that is why we should not delay; we should call Him often and with confidence.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Bishop Jones is the Diocesan of the 10th Episcopal District of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World Inc., an anointed preacher, inspired teacher, and a prolific writer. He has published more than 40 books at the present with others in the making.

The Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) came together with the Apostolic Faith Fellowship International (AFFI); Pentecostal Churches of the Apostolic Faith International (PCAFI); and Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ (COOLJC) brotherhood to have the Global Men’s Conference on October 28, 2021. The theme was, “We Are Stronger Together.” The Bible says, One Lord, One faith, One baptism, One God, and Father of all. (Eph 4:5-6) This was a historic event…Men across organizations came together as one unit, taking their rightful position in front, where God intended them to be. We had a vision of four organizations coming together in a collaborative fashion to present the Gospel to men on a global platform. These four organizations gathered together in Unity to encourage and exhort while showing unity in the Apostolic Faith. The planning team consisted of District Elder Tommie R. Hughes (Men’s President of PAW); Deacon Tannis Vaughn (Men’s President of COOLJC); Elder Richard Lawrence (Men’s President of AFFI); and Elder Larry Stevens (Men’s President of PCAFI). As men of God, our goal is to be biblically correct—not politically correct. Although these four organizations differ in some respects (two are conservative, and two are liberal), we wanted the attendees to come to their own conclusions. The most important questions we wanted answered were: “Does the slight (organizational) differences affect men who are not churched? and “Are these differences significant enough to determine whether or not he stays around long enough to experience the manifest presence of God?” The conference brought out the fact that men need more than spiritual manifestation; they want physical manifestation. In other words, brothers want to see other brothers “walk the walk, and not just talk the talk.”

Bishops from the organizations also weighed in on our Friday panel discussion moderated by Bishop Carl Turner (PAW). Participating Bishops were: Bishop Troy Dockery (PCAFI); Bishop Royce Fields (AFFI) and Bishop Malcolm Mitchell (COOLJC). They discussed tough issues such as: “How can we reconcile our belief system so that we are sending consistent messages to the world about what it means to be apostolic?” The discussion was lively and full of thought-provoking dialogue. One of our topics was: “Can a man be the head of his household and not appear chauvinistic in the 21st century?” The conference addressed how as leaders are we reaching young Millennial and Generation X brothers. We addressed: “What do you speak into a young man’s life who doesn’t believe that Black Lives Matter?” The conference was truly a blessing, and it was the first of many to come. We thank and praise God for the great Presiders who blessed this conference and supported the Men’s Presidents. They are: Bishop Theodore L. Brooks, Sr. (PAW); Bishop Charles E. Johnson (AFFI); Bishop Lambert W. Gates, Sr. (PCAFI); and Apostle James I. Clark, Jr. (COOLJC). We thank God for the opportunity to serve the Lord and look forward to next year’s conference being more explosive and spiritual than ever. Tune in to your Brotherhood auxiliaries as we hope to be a shining example of how a man can embrace God’s will for his life in an ever-growing secular church environment. A special thanks to Bishop Marvin E. Donaldson who started me on this walk 25 years ago in the Men’s Ministry Auxiliary, I also would like to thank Elder Larry Cushingberry, Suffragan Bishop Larry Thompson and Suffragan Bishop Roskco Motes. Blessings, District Elder Tommie R. Hughes

District Elder Tommie R. Hughes currently serves as the President of the International Men’s Ministry Auxiliary of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. HISTORY

A TIME IN HISTORY The PAW 2006 Azusa Centennial: Celebrating The History of Pentecost

REVEREND WILLIAM PENDLETON Reverend William Pendleton, the first chief officer of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World was selected Chairman, according to meeting notes from a 1907 session in Los Angeles attended by several Azusa Street alums. Reverend Pendleton was pastor of the Eighth and Maple Mission, started by Frank Bartleman when he decided to turn the church over to Pendleton who led the congregation for many years. In 1910, the name changed to the Pentecostal Assembly. In 1923 it relocated to 1162 E. 43rd Street, and in 1914 the address was 749 Kohler. In 1916, Frank Ewart apparently became co-pator. William Pendelton died January 3, 1917 and was succeeded by Frank J. Ewart.

FRANK J. EWART “Fearless Preacher”

“Ewart was considered one of the lending Pentecostals on the West Coast in the early 1900’s. Ewart was known as a fearless Baptist preacher, and in 1908, he accepted the Pentecostal message in Portland. After this acceptance, and defying the Baptist theology, he was summarily excommunicted. It was then that he made his way to Los Angeles and became a disciple of William H. Durham. As time past he became Durham’s assistant at his world renowned church located at Seventh and Los Angeles streets. When Durham died, He assumed Pastoral duties at the church. When the “Jesus Name issue” emerged in 1913-1914 he was considered one of the leading Pentecostals on the West Coast.

PAW REPORTER

INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE By Suffragan Bishop Maxie Dobson

IRS Updates Per Diem Rates for Travel Expenses for 2021-2022

T

he Internal Revenue Service recently issued new per diem rates which taxpayers can use to substantiate the amount of expenses they can deduct for lodging, meals and incidental expenses when they are traveling away from home. These rates are effective October 1, 2021 thru September 30, 2022. For the high-low substantiation method, the per diem rates are $296 (up from $292) for travel to any high-cost locale and $202 (up from $198) for travel to anywhere else within the continental United States. The amount of the $296 high rate and $202 low rate that is treated as paid for meals is $74 for travel to any high-cost locality and $64 for travel to any other locality within the continental United States. The per-diem rate for the incidental-expenses remains unchanged at $5 per day for any locality of travel. “Use of a per diem substantiation method is not mandatory, the IRS noted. “A taxpayer may substantiate actual allowable expenses if the taxpayer maintains adequate records or other sufficient evidence for proper substantiation.” Source: www.accountingtoday.com (09/03/21) Churches With Employer Identification Numbers Must Keep Information Current Calling it a key security issue, the Internal Revenue Service on July 30, 2021 urged those entities with Employer Identification Numbers (EINs) to update their applications if there has been a change in the responsible party or contact information. IRS regulations require EIN holders to update responsible party information within 60 days of any change by filing Form 8822-B, Change of Address or Responsible Party - Business. It is critical that the IRS have accurate information in cases of identity theft or other fraud issues related to EINs or business accounts.

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

The IRS defines the responsible party as the individual or entity who “controls, manages, or directs the applicant entity and the disposition of its funds and assets.” The IRS intends to step up its awareness efforts aimed at businesses, partnerships, trusts and estates, charities and other entities that are EIN holders. Starting in August 2021, the IRS will begin sending letters to approximately 100,000 EIN holders where it appears the responsible party is outdated. A church that fails to update its information regarding the responsible party “may not receive timely notices of deficiencies or demands for taxes from the IRS, which can lead to penalties and additional interest charges.” Source: www.irs.gov IRS Audits Fell Again in 2020 The IRS wrapped up 509,917 audits last fiscal year, recommending that people pay an additional $12.9 billion extra in taxes. That’s down from the more than 771,000 audits conducted in fiscal-year 2019 recommending more than $17 billion in additional taxes. It’s far from the 1.5 million audits concluded in 2010. But within the total 2020 count, 10,890 concluded audits focused on tax returns worth at least $1 million. That’s far from the 24,744 audits which ended in tax year 2011 for well-heeled returns that were worth at least $1 million. Still, it’s up from the 889 audits for the rich that were wrapped up in tax year 2018. The statistics are another data point in an ongoing story about the IRS’s shrinking audit rate and shrinking staff size. During fiscal 2020, the IRS had nearly 76,000 “full-time equivalent” positions — that’s a 20% drop from 2010. The fiscal year began in October 2019 and stretched into the pandemic, ending in September 2020. Source: www.marketwatch.com (07/25/21)

YOUTH CORNER

T

NOW IS YOUR TIME! By Elder George Twilley, Jr.

he pew babies of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World have been afforded great opportunities over the years. We are privileged to sit at the feet of great teachers and preachers who deliver sound doctrine. We are covered by the prayers of the saints who have preserved us even in times of peril. We are exposed to environments where our anointings and giftings are cultivated. And we are trained in service and ministry by those who have given their lives in the service of the Lord. But there comes a time when the baton is passed to us, and we are granted the opportunity to continue the legacy and advance the kingdom. Many look forward with great anticipation to “the moment” when we can serve in our local congregations, councils and even internationally. However, in some instances, the timing of “the moment” seems to conflict with the vicissitudes of our life. In July 2018, I was elected to serve as the President of the DC, Delaware & Maryland District Council Young People’s Union. The thought of succeeding leaders such as Bishop Winfield Showell, Evangelist Dr. Audrey Clark, Bishop Andrew Turner, and many

28

others who set at the helm of this auxiliary was daunting. Nevertheless, I approached the assignment with excitement and optimism. The Lord blessed me with a vision, direction and an awesome team of leaders to work with. Under ideal circumstances, I would have preferred to begin my term in this office with my attention fully devoted to this assignment. However, the summer of 2018 proved to be one of the most trying times of my life. Within a period of three months, the Lord saw fit to call home three individuals who were very close to me. These were individuals who were a part of my core circle. My godfather, my uncle and a friend (who I regarded as a brother) transitioned within a matter of weeks. It was difficult to watch those who I was so close to endure sickness. Even more taxing was arriving at the hospital to watch one pass away and only moments later to receive a call with a negative report on another who was hospitalized. There was even a moment where I was making arrangements for one while at the hospital for another. True to my nature, I completed tasks as they arose for my family, church, work and council. I made it through

“WALKING IN THE PROMISE OF GOD”

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022

those three months; however, in the process I did not notice the toil that these losses had on my health and emotions. The timing of each loss did not afford me the opportunity to process the death or mourn the loss of any of the three. When I finally had a moment to reflect and gather my thoughts it felt like things were falling apart all around me. It seemed like I couldn’t find good news anywhere. I knew that I had family, friends and an awesome support system; however, my godfather, uncle and friend were no longer here. I longed for the opportunity to just share with them my news from July; to get their advice; to share more time in prayer with them. The Lord led me to Ezekiel 37 in the days approaching the first council session of my administration. While I have read that passage many times before and have heard sermons and teachings from this text regarding the prophet’s vision of the valley of dry bones, this time the passage seemed to come alive before my eyes and the Lord told me “It’s coming together.” By the Word of the Lord, the pieces, fragments, and remnants of the battle that seemed lifeless and hopeless would come together. As the Lord instructed Ezekiel to prophesy to the bones in the valley, I felt challenged to prophesy to the bones that I saw in my valley season. Encouraged by the Word, I shared this passage with our young people in the fall of 2018. I was grateful to emerge from that experience with the promise of recovery, order and wholeness ... “It’s Coming Together.” In November 2018, I was privileged to complete my first foreign missions assignment in Johannesburg, South Africa, with Hope International Services. We partnered with a group of approximately 10 churches in South Africa and school for a week of outreach, teaching, and worship. We were blessed to set up a computer lab at Emmanuel Primary School while there, as well. However, there were two things that stood out the most from this trip. First, I was fascinated by the expressions of worship by the saints in Johannesburg. Many of these individuals walk for miles to come to church and when they arrive for worship, they are fully engaged with their minds, body, and souls – old and young alike. Secondly, the day I arrived in Johannesburg the Lord confirmed His Word to me from a few weeks before. Prior to our departure, we received a flyer from the host church, Kingdom of Faith Church that was pastored by the late Bishop T.A. Mazibuko, which listed the name of the weeklong meeting, “J’wale Re Kopane.” Upon our arrival, I asked one of our hosts to give me the interpretation of the name of the meeting. To my surprise, the interpretation is “Now We Come Together.” The trip could have ended for

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

me right then because it was as if the Lord allowed me to travel over 8,000 miles from Washington, DC to Johannesburg just to hear Him speak again. Whereas, prior to this point I knew that it would come together but I certainly had questions regarding how it would happen but at that moment, the questions faded away and were overtaken by the confidence that I had in what the Lord said. I returned home revived and energized for the assignments that were before me. The Lord gave me the confidence that I needed to trust him that things would come together. Over the past few years, our Young People’s Union has provided platforms to empower and train our local youth leaders. We’re witnessing the development of various facets of ministry amongst our youth as they use their gifts and abilities to introduce ministry to new arenas. We’ve completed projects of service that impacted the community during our council sessions. It’s coming together! Even personally, with time the Lord has graciously comforted me with wise counsel; my perspective has been enlightened as I navigated the new norms of life. I have learned that the “ideal” time to serve the Lord is not when everything in your life is aligned the way you desire. The “ideal” time to serve the Lord is while we still have the time! This is our time! To any young person who’s contemplating when to take the next step in walking in your calling and serving, I urge you to delay no further. God can use you at any age and during any stage of your life. Don’t postpone your service…now is your time!

CAREER

ASK AND YOU SHALL

RECEIVE “The blessing of the Lord brings wealth…” Proverbs 10:22 By Tenia Clayton, Esq.

I

f there’s one thing the pandemic taught us, it’s that we have to be resourceful. We know God can open doors to places beyond our imagination, but sometimes, this requires work on our end. College is a prime example of this. As parents, we do all we can to make sure our children are learning everything they need to succeed in school and at life. We pray for them to do well, and when they do, we eventually have to start thinking about how to help them pay for college. Most of us don’t have thousands of dollars to put towards school. The good news is that you don’t have to! There are scholarships, grants, etc. that can lower out-of-pocket costs for college. With the Lord’s help and a few tips I’ll share, college can be attainable. I was fortunate enough to go to a private Christian school from kindergarten through twelfth grade. We had counselors and were prepared for the college application process. I knew that Emory University was my first choice, but a private school that cost $60,000 per year seemed daunting. However, Emory met 100% need, and I got an early decision acceptance. My parents ended up paying manageable amounts just for my books and a portion of my campus housing costs each semester. I graduated in 3.5 years with a degree in

30

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

Human Health and went on to Belmont Law with a full tuition scholarship. I still applied to my church’s Sunday School scholarship, a bar association scholarship, and a $10,000 law firm diversity scholarship. I graduated cum laude, ranked 10th in my class, and now work as an attorney at that law firm. These scholarships can lead to more opportunities beyond just the money.

1. Consider costs before your child even begins applying to schools You’re probably thinking that your child should apply to any and every school and if they get accepted, then you can worry about whether you can afford it. This could lead to disappointment if the finances don’t pan out. Additionally, schools have application fees that add up, so it’s best to prioritize. However, it is also helpful to ask for fee waivers. Almost all of my law school applications were free, and it can often be as easy as just emailing the admissions office, asking if they would consider waiving the fee. Sometimes, you may even automatically qualify for a fee waiver. When thinking about schools, consider whether they’re public or private. Private schools have a lot of funding to offer big financial aid packages, but

“WALKING IN THE PROMISE OF GOD”

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022

they’re also much more expensive. If the school is public, you also have to think about whether it is in your state of residence, meaning you’ll have the benefit of the in-state tuition price. Public schools typically have a higher tuition rate for out-of-state students, so this could be a determining factor. Additionally, if your child is fairly certain about a school, consider applying early-decision. Some schools give scholarship priority to early-decision students because early decision is often binding, meaning if your child is accepted, they are committed to attending. Another thing to think about when deciding on schools to apply to is whether they meet 100% need. This means that the school meets 100% of your family’s demonstrated financial need based on the amount you are deemed to be able to pay.

2. Complete FAFSA as soon as possible FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and is an application that is completed every year to assess eligibility for grants, work-study, and student loans. This is key because grants don’t have to be paid back and work-study is a way for your child to work part-time on campus, which can allow them to contribute. FAFSA is free to complete and opens on October 1. Every state and college has a different deadline for financial information, so complete FAFSA as soon as possible. Another reason to do this early is that schools offer acceptances and scholarships on a rolling basis, so being on the earlier end of the process can maximize potential aid. Remember that you have to renew FAFSA every year, and the hard Federal deadline for FAFSA is June 30, 2023. Another form that you may have to complete is the CSS Profile. CSS stands for College Scholarship Service, and it is unique because whether you have to complete it depends on the school. FAFSA is for federal assistance whereas CSS is used by universities to determine how much aid you need. FAFSA is tedious, but, in comparison, the CSS Profile is Goliath and FAFSA is little David. CSS can take 45 minutes to two hours to complete. It asks about income, account balances, investments, etc., and it does not replace FAFSA. CSS is meant to help supplement any Federal aid you qualify for. It is especially helpful at schools that meet 100% need because it is detailed enough to show just how much you need to be able to pay for college after considering any expenses and existing debts.

3. Negotiate school-sponsored scholarships Let’s say your student gets accepted to the school of their dreams, and the school even offers them a decent merit scholarship. Merit scholarships are based on academic achievement, but they are not set in stone. Many people don’t realize that it is possible to negotiate scholarships. If your child is a highachiever and well-rounded candidate, the school may be willing to accommodate reasonable requests for more money. For example, a friend of mine applied to a newer, private law school after graduating from a top 20 university with a business degree, good GPA, and decent test scores. The law school offered him a 50% tuition scholarship. He pushed back and requested more. The school realized that as a successful Black man, other schools would want him. They adjusted his scholarship offer to 100% tuition. I’m not saying that it is always easy to get a full ride, but it doesn’t hurt to ask if the school can offer you more—especially if you are a minority with offers from other schools. This holds true whether the scholarship is based on sports or academics.

4. Apply for all the external scholarships you can find In addition to money the schools can offer, try to apply for scholarships from external organizations. This could be your church, your child’s high school, or local non-profit organizations. Think about your child’s interests. Certain organizations offer scholarships for students interested in studying the organization’s industry. Many places also offer diversity scholarships now that can really benefit Black students. This will take some research and some digging, but can be worth the trouble.

lack History Month: The celebration of Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator and publisher. It became a month-long celebration in 1976. The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. NAACP: On February 12, 2019, the NAACP marked its 110th anniversary. Spurred by growing racial violence in the early 20th century, and particularly by 1908 race riots in Springfield, Illinois, a group of African American leaders joined together to form a new permanent civil rights organization, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). February 12, 1909, was chosen because it was the centennial anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Heavyweight Champ: Jack Johnson became the first African American man to hold the World Heavyweight Champion boxing title in 1908. He held onto the belt until 1915. First Lawyer: John Mercer Langston was the first Black man to become a lawyer when he passed the bar in Ohio in 1854. When he was elected to the post of Town Clerk for Brownhelm, Ohio, in 1855 Langston became one of the first African Americans ever elected to public office in America. John Mercer Langston was also the great-uncle of Langston Hughes, famed poet of the Harlem Renaissance. Famous Protestors and Activists: While Rosa Parks is credited with helping to spark the civil rights movement when she refused to give up her public bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955—inspiring the Montgomery Bus Boycott—the lesser-known Claudette Colvin was arrested nine months prior for not giving up her bus seat to white passengers.

BLESSED ARE YOUR EYES “Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things…” Psalms 119:18

I

magine: • A soon-to-be mother glowing and holding her growing baby bump. • The delicate features of a newborn. • Family gatherings that are full of laughter and happiness creating memories that will be captured and viewed by generations to come. • The pride and joy of a graduate. • A child of God with their hands lifted in adoration and praise to the King of Glory. These are a few of the instances that God has blessed me to capture through Brown Squared Photography. In 1997, at the age of 25, I was diagnosed with a disease that the doctors said would leave me legally blind. The condition caused my left eye to bulge out of its socket and my eye sight slowly started to diminish. The doctors made the proclamation that no one wants to hear, “There is nothing that we can do.” I now realize that it is those types of conditions that God works the best. I am thankful for a praying mother who knows Jesus. Every time she would see me, she would lay her hand over my eye and say, “In the name of Jesus. “ I don’t know how, I don’t when, all I know is that God put my eyeball back in its socket and I have been told by the eye specialist that I do not have 20/20 vision, but 20/10 vision, which means I can see better than the average person. That was 25 years ago! I now have a greater perspective of that experience; it has given me an eye to capture and highlight the details and beauty of the simplest situations. One of my joys is the love of taking pictures. About 15 years ago I was inspired to enhance my skills at the professional level. Ten years ago, “Brown Squared Photography” was born, with my beautiful daughter, Melenie (Professional Clinical Therapist) as my assistant. Interestingly, I can only take photos with my left eye,

the same eye that God healed. I specialize in newborn, maternity, family, and senior photography. I have a special affinity for worship and church photography. I feel as if God allows me a glimpse into what He is doing in His child’s life at that moment long enough for me to capture it through the lens of my camera. Some of Brown Squared Photography accomplishments includes being featured in magazines nationally and internationally; the Indy Star; placed three times in the Indiana State Fair Photography contest, and was featured on news stations, websites, and local art events. I have learned that Brown Squared Photography is more than just a business—it’s also a ministry. My style of photography is not just art but emotional and spiritual experiences as well. God has a way of strategically placing His children where they are needed to minister. Whether it’s a new mother needing prayer during a newborn photoshoot for postpartum depression, or just lending an ear to frustrated soon to be parents of a baby not arriving exactly on its anticipated due date or helping others to see themselves more positively with the understanding that they are fearfully and wonderfully made or providing words of wisdom to a new graduate. My passion of photographing is in capturing the essence of all those memories. If during a dark time, a person can see a photo of themselves in worship or at a time where God is moving in their life and trigger their memory of how they felt, remember what God told them at that time and be an encouragement, then, the enemy is once again defeated. So, when is the last time you had a photo taken of you and your loved ones? Do it soon, the memories will last a lifetime and beyond. “…blessed are your eyes, because they see…” Matthew 13:16

Malissa Grandberry-Brown lives in Brownsburg, Indiana, with Barry, her husband of 29 years and they are the parents of 4 young adult children. She is currently a member of Zion Tabernacle Apostolic Faith Church in Indianapolis. HEALTH

ALZHEIMER’S

DISEASE

By Dr. Vanessa Robinson

A

lzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases.

Dementia is caused by damage to brain cells. This damage interferes with the ability of brain cells to communicate with each other. When this occurs thinking, behavior and feelings are affected. There is no one test to determine if someone has dementia. Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia are diagnosed based on medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. An addition are the characteristic changes in thinking and day-today function. Doctors can determine that a person has dementia with a high level of certainty based upon this information, but it’s harder to determine the exact type of dementia because the symptoms and brain changes of different dementias can overlap. There are some special considerations for African Americans: Alzheimer’s disease is more prevalent among African Americans than among whites — with estimates ranging from 14% to almost 100% higher. There is a greater familial risk of Alzheimer’s in African Americans; and genetic and environmental factors may work differently to cause Alzheimer’s disease in African Americans. Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. The greatest known risk factor is increasing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older. Alzheimer’s disease is considered to be younger-onset Alzheimer’s if it affects a person under 65. Younger-onset can also be referred to as early-onset Alzheimer’s. People with younger-onset Alzheimer’s can be in the early, middle, or late stage of the disease. The following are ten signs of Alzheimer’s Disease, but it is important to distinguish these from normal aging.

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

1. MEMORY LOSS THAT DISRUPTS DAILY LIFE. One of the most common signs of Alzheimer’s disease, especially in the early stage, is forgetting recently learned information. Others include forgetting important dates or events, asking the same question over and over again, or increasingly needing to rely on memory aids (e.g., reminder notes or electronic devices) or family members for things the person used to handle on their own. Typical agerelated changes are sometimes forgetting names or appointments but remembering them later. 2. CHALLENGES IN PLANNING OR SOLVING PROBLEMS Some people living with dementia may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers. They may have trouble following a familiar recipe or keeping track of monthly bills. They may have difficulty concentrating and take much longer to do things than they did before. Typical age-related changes are making occasional errors when managing finances or household bills. 3. DIFFICULTY COMPLETING FAMILIAR TASKS. People living with Alzheimer’s disease often find it hard to complete routine tasks. Sometimes they may have trouble driving to a familiar location, organizing a grocery list, or remembering the rules of a favorite game. A typical age-related change is occasionally needing help to use microwave settings or to record a TV show. 4. CONFUSION WITH TIME OR PLACE. People living with Alzheimer’s can lose track of dates, seasons, and the passage of time. They may have trouble understanding something if it is not happening immediately. Sometimes they may forget where they are or how they got there. A typical agerelated change? Getting confused about the day of the week but figuring it out later.

5. TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING VISUAL IMAGES AND SPATIAL RELATIONSHIPS. For some people, vision problems are a sign of Alzheimer’s. They may also have problems judging distance and determining color or contrast, causing issues with driving. What’s a typical age-related change? Vision changes related to cataracts.

Early symptoms include: • Memory loss • Misplacing items • Forgetting the names of places and objects • Repeating themselves regularly, such as asking the same question several times • Becoming less flexible and more hesitant to try new things

6. NEW PROBLEMS WITH WORDS IN SPEAKING OR WRITING People living with Alzheimer’s may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or repeat themselves. They may struggle with vocabulary, have trouble naming a familiar object or use the wrong name. A typical age-related change is sometimes having trouble finding the right word. 7. MISPLACING THINGS AND LOSING THE ABILITY TO RETRACE STEPS. A person living with Alzheimer’s may put things in unusual places. They may lose things and be unable to go back over their steps to find them again. He or she may accuse others of stealing, especially as the disease progresses. A typical age-related change would be misplacing things from time to time and retracing steps to find them. 8. DECREASED OR POOR JUDGMENT Individuals may experience changes in judgment or decision-making. For example, they may use poor judgment when dealing with money, or pay less attention to grooming or keeping themselves clean. A typical age-related change is making a bad decision occasionally, like neglecting to change the oil in the car. 9. WITHDRAWAL FROM WORK OR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES. A person living with Alzheimer’s may experience changes in the ability to hold or follow a conversation. As a result, he or she may withdraw from hobbies, social activities, or other engagements. They may have trouble keeping up with a favorite team or activity. A typical age-related change? Sometimes feeling uninterested in family or social obligations. 10. CHANGES IN MOOD AND PERSONALITY. Individuals living with Alzheimer’s may experience mood and personality changes. They may be easily upset at home, at work, with friends or when out of their comfort zone. A typical age-related change includes developing very specific ways of doing things and becoming irritable when a routine is disrupted. Alzheimer’s disease has often been classified in stages, early, middle, and late. The following are characteristic symptoms of each stage:

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

Middle-stage symptoms include: • Increasing confusion and disorientation • Obsessive, repetitive, or impulsive behavior • Delusions (believing things that are untrue) • Problems with speech or language (aphasia) • Disturbed sleep • Changes in mood, such as frequent mood swings, depression and feeling increasingly anxious, frustrated, or agitated • Difficulty in performing spatial tasks, such as judging distances • Loss of smell Later symptoms include: • Difficulty in changing position or moving around without assistance • Considerable weight loss – although some people eat too much and put on weight • Gradual loss of speech • Significant problems with short and long-term memory Although there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, risk factors modification, preventative measures such as diet and exercise can impact the course of the illness.

ear Heavenly Father,

We enter into Your gates with thanksgiving, and Your courts with praise! We give You thanks, for You are good, Your love endures forever. We thank You Lord, with all of our heart; We will tell of all Your wonderful deeds. Lord, we pray for those incarcerated, we thank You that You are the great comforter. We ask that You send supernatural comfort and strength to them right now. We know there is violence within the walls of many prisons, but we pray for supernatural protection all around them. We send angels to protect them right now.

Dear Readers, in our last issue Evangelist Marsha receive high praises from one of her assigned participant in our Adopt-ASoul prison ministry. Therefore, we thought it would be most befitting to feature her and honor her for her contribution to this program. As the Scripture has stated...Let others praise you, and when others praise you, it is okay to be recognized. So we here at the Adopt-A-Soul prison ministry along with Bishop Theodore L. Brooks, Presiding Bishop, Bishops Mark C. Tolbert, Sr. and Michael D. Hannah, Sr. Assistant Presiding Bishops, along with the Bishop Board of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. would like to say thank you for your faithful commentment to this program. May God Bless! Evangelist Mona Thomas-Green

MARSHA The Blessing of Mentorship I once heard my mother say when God calls you to serve Him, you better go and not play with Him. I wondered at that time, how would I know if I was called. Having received that call years later, I now know that God touches your heart and spirit. There is no room for doubt because He will impress upon your heart what to do. You will know it is God appointed. Each step in my service to God has lead to a new door of opportunity. Three years ago that door opened to mentorship. It has been a blessing to pour the Word of God into the hearts of God’s souls. It says in Matthew 28:19 (KJV) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. To me that is what mentorship is. All should be taught. It says in John 7:16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but His that sent me. (KJV) It is very important that people hear God’s doctrine, not man’s. It is a blessing to walk this journey and share His Word with others. It says in Hebrews 13:3 Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. (KJV) Everyone should have that opportunity to know our one true God, who manifested Himself as a man, coming down here to be the ultimate sacrifice for each of us. For God to be who He is; all power, and sovereign, to entrust me with His souls, leaves me awestruck. I am determined to give Him the best part of me as I journey on this battlefield of life and that includes Mentorship. Evangelist Marsha
