In GIA’s history, very few polished diamonds of gem quality have surpassed the 100-carat mark. Already part of an elite group due to its size, the highly transparent nature of this diamond adds to its rarity. This pure diamond is classified as type IIa which scientifically means it is lacking measurable levels of impurities like nitrogen, thus giving this diamond its pure white color.
This diamond was fashioned into a classic old world cushion cut, with its smaller table and open culet. Its faceting bears resemblance to other world-renowned diamonds, such as the 45.52 carat Blue Hope Diamond and the 105 carat Koh-I-Nur.

FROM THE EDITOR
If you look at the back of my SUV, you won’t find a vanity license plate. However, I do admire the creativity, humor, and even brassiness these tags sometimes convey to an audience of highway-faring strangers. A few weeks ago, during my morning commute, one of these emboldened pieces of aluminum gave pause and made me smile. The owner of this Florida-registered musing, in my estimation, had encapsulated life in the Sunshine State with a mere seven letters: BUSY LVN. There’s no denying summer brings a slower pace to Naples, but that doesn’t mean there’s a dearth of delightful pursuits. For some, the season affords time to really get busy living and indulge in activities that are so difficult to make time for during the in-season bustle—as is the case for Scott and Jennifer O’Dell, the handsome couple gracing this issue’s cover. Starting on page 72, learn more about the O’Dells, long-time Naples residents and dedicated philanthropists, including how they pass a perfect summer day in paradise as well as how they warm the hearts of others. We also explore summer recreation and relaxation on the road. Our editors put on their traveling caps and culled the best of the state to bring you a 14-page compilation of road-trip-worthy destinations. Beginning on page 78, discover fabulous fare and unique eats, Florida’s most amazing outdoor and wildlife adventures, and the best hotels and resorts to rest your head. For me, summer is more spirited and refreshing with delectable sips, so I’m excited we’re able to shine light on a handful of fruitful Florida wineries. In “Uncorking the Sunshine State,” author Jules Aron, a talented mixologist and drink enthusiast, surveys five properties that use mostly Muscadine grapes as well as tropical fruits and citrus varieties. Flip to page 102 to learn more about these lesser-known estates and check out a few wine-based cocktail recipes, too. Finally, the phrase “busy living” also applies to Kaleigh Grover, our highly esteemed publisher. After 17 years, Kaleigh has decided to take a much-deserved retirement. While our offices won’t be the same without her deft leadership, wonderful wit, and bright smile, we are thrilled for her as she begins her next chapter on a charming farm nestled amid the rolling hills of the Bluegrass State. She will be sorely missed in our great community. Here’s to Kaleigh, a wonderful summer holiday, and a life of busy living!

FROM THE PUBLISHER
It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 17 years since I stepped into this role with Naples Illustrated. We were only publishing two titles in Southwest Florida then, Naples Illustrated and Naples Charity Register. Now, we’re up to 10 titles in this market alone. Our little town has enjoyed similar growth. When my husband, Michael, and I moved here from Tampa in 1986, there were just a handful of restaurants, and Pine Ridge Road was only two lanes. I recall telling Michael I needed a “bag phone” (remember those?) because I was afraid if my car broke down on Vanderbilt Beach Road I might not be seen for hours! Although grateful for all the joy Naples and its residents have brought to me and my family for more than 36 years, Michael and I have decided to relocate to our farm in Kentucky full-time. Our children, Sara and Alleigh, now young ladies, are both thriving in their careers, love, and marriages. We decided farm life would be a wonderful next phase for us and, if truth be told, are hoping that the hooks of baby miniature donkeys, chickens, and horses might entice visits from grandchildren as often as their parents will allow. My career has come with many rewards, but none as important to me as the people I’ve met along the way, people I now have the pleasure of calling friends—or better yet—blessings. It’s difficult to put into words the impact friendship has on one’s life, but for me it’s everything. My husband told me what he loves most about me is “that I wake up every day with a smile.” How could I not with all the blessings around me? When you’ve been employed at one place for so long, there must be a reason, and mine is my co-workers (family) at the magazine, many of whom I’ve worked with for 17 years. This type of longevity helps us stay in sync, identify our strengths, and hold each other’s hands when life throws curveballs. Like everyone else, I’ve had a few of these over the years but came out swinging thanks to my co-workers. Had it not been for meeting and hiring Meegan Wyatt four years ago, the thought of handing over my publisher’s role would have been like giving up my firstborn—unbearable. But now, I do so with great comfort, pride, and confidence. Meegan is the right person for this position; she has ambition, passion for the industry, a willingness to learn, and most important, a true love for this community. In partnership with Jane Enos, editor in chief, the most creative and personable lady I know, along with the remainder of the Naples dream team—oh, the places they will go! Forever grateful,
MEGAN DIPIERO PHOTOGRAPHY
A Gracious Goodbye

INSIDER WATERY WORLD
Collier County’s artificial reef program has grown to hundreds of structures since the 1980s. Directed by Collier County Coastal Zone Management, underwater structures weighing 200 to 500 tons have been created off the county’s coastline—located from a few miles to nearly 32 miles from shore. The artificial reefs are constructed from recycled cement or limestone boulders, which are carefully evaluated to ensure the materials being submerged are free of potential environmental contaminants, according to Chris D’Arco, senior field investigator for Coastal Zone Management. D’Arco says reefs are generally surveyed once a year to assess their overall health and to clean debris. Among other benefits, artificial reefs mitigate anchoring and fishing pressures placed on surrounding natural reefs, foster habitats for fish and invertebrate life, and offer recreational opportunities to fishers and divers. Fish and other marine life are attracted to the reefs for shelter and food. The largest local artificial reef project commenced in 2015 as a collaboration among the Coastal Zone Management, City of Naples, and City of Marco Island. This endeavor involved the permitting of six

artificial reef sites in the Gulf of Mexico and was funded by a British Petroleum Deepwater Horizon grant and private donations. The result: Almost 50,000 tons of artificial reef material were deployed at the cost of approximately $2 million. To date, no tax revenue has been used to construct the county’s artificial reefs; all funding has been generated from grants and private donations. What’s next? More reefs. Collier County Coastal Zone Management plans to deploy additional artificial reefs of varying sizes and materials within the next few years. (colliercountyfl.gov) —Jane E. Enos

GARDEN DELIGHT
Naples artist Emily James has created limited-edition giclée prints on canvas of her painting Orchid Lake to benefit the Naples Botanical Garden. Orchid Lake was inspired by the garden’s LaGrippe Orchid Garden, and she has created several other garden-inspired paintings. One hundred and seventy-five archival 36
pigment giclée prints were signed and numbered by James. They are available for purchase ($1,600) at her gallery at 720 Fifth Avenue South. Buyers receive a one-year membership to the garden. James is a longtime supporter of the garden, “which we all adore!” she exclaims. (emilyjamesart.com) —C.C.
It may come as no surprise to devoted patrons of Marissa Collections that the luxury fashion boutique bested national brands when it was awarded the 2022 GEM Award for Retail Excellence by the Jewelers of America. The family-owned and -operated fashion boutique was founded in Naples in 1975 and expanded in recent years with a second boutique in Palm Beach. Founders Marissa and Burt Hartington, and their son Jay, the company’s CEO, accepted the honor at the twentieth annual award show at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. The event featured celebrity speakers such as Blake Lively, Jennifer Connelly, and Lily Allen. Marissa Collections—offering a curated selection of designer jewelry and apparel, handbags, shoes, and accessories for men and women—beat Saks Fifth Avenue and Muse. “This is such a remarkable industry,” Jay Hartington said in accepting the honor. “I am proud and in awe every day working with you and to call so many of you my friends.” (marissacollections.com) —C.C.

INSIDER HISTORIC HOSPITALITY
TRANQUIL Lullabies Following a three-year renovation, the century-old Shangri-La Springs has opened to overnight visitors for the first time in 27 years with eight guest rooms—two suites in the main hotel and six rooms across the courtyard in Villa Ascona. In the main hotel, the Bonita Suite hosts a pair of king-size bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a living room with a sleeper sofa. In the two-bedroom, three-bathroom Heitman Suite, there is a king-size fourposter bed, queen-size bed, living room, and sleeper sofa in a sitting room. All of these newly modernized guest rooms are on the property’s first floor, and planning is underway to redesign and renovate rooms on the second floor, according to spokesman Bill Oberman. The Bonita Springs landmark was built in 1921 near the mineral spring for which the town is named to lodge visiting real estate prospects. It was expanded by 50 rooms, then upgraded by Cadillac heir Walter Mach, before becoming a health resort. Osteopath Dr. Charles Gnau¾—a “believer in the healing powers of the mineral water”— ¾purchased the property in 1962 and installed the spring-fed pool and Indian Maid of the Springs statue. Oak Creek also flows through the grounds, which boast two champion Mysore fig trees. The property reopened in 2011 with the same focus on wellness and restoration. The on-site, certified organic garden provides fresh ingredients for the hotel’s restaurant, Harvest & Wisdom, and the organic spa offers a full menu of treatments. (shangrilasprings.com) —C.C.

What inspired you to start your own namesake label? Creating Ala von Auersperg was somewhat of a happy accident. I wanted to make wearable, beautiful clothes for myself and, in doing so, found a following amongst my friends. That said, fashion has always played an integral role in my life. I come from a line of women with their own sense of style. As a child, I visited the Parisian couture houses with my mother, Sunny Crawford von Bülow, and grandmother, Annie Laurie Aitken, and have always been drawn to the magic of custom-made clothing. Who or what has been the greatest influence on your work? There are many designers who have influenced and inspired me, not only in my work but throughout my life—namely, Yves Saint Laurent and Hubert de Givenchy for their beautiful mastery of design and Ottavio Missoni and Gimmo Etro for their expertise in iconic prints. Additionally, the beauty of nature and tropical gardens has always served as a source of inspiration for my painting and, ultimately, my prints. Describe your design process for a new collection. The process of creating my collections is an intimate one for me, with each piece beginning life not as a garment or pattern but an original drawing or painting. I take inspiration for my art from nature and my surroundings—often my tropical home in Antigua—but inspiration is the key. It may come in the form of a plant, a garden, or a shade, but it’s important I feel creatively attached to it. Once finished, I work with my in-house designer to translate my art into a print. From there, we decide on fabrics and that becomes the foundation for our collections. What’s one piece in your collection every woman should own? Our Kathe dress is a must-have 46
REAL TALK WITH...

The heiress, activist, and designer of Ala von Auersperg reflects on her life and art BY KATHERINE LANDE New Ala von Auersperg designs include the Pamela silk dress in Angels Trumpet (inset) and Caterina stretch knit top, pants, and skirt in Blue Noisette (right).
If you weren’t designing clothing, what would be your dream job? If I wasn’t designing, I’d likely be retired but most certainly would still be painting. I enjoy my work immensely, but my art is something I can do beyond my job, and it’s wonderful. What’s your favorite charitable organization? The National Center for Victims of Crime, an organization that provides victims of crime with rights, protection, and services to help them rebuild their lives. What’s your favorite summer travel destination? I love everything about Capri—the water, the shopping, eating, swimming. I find myself continually inspired by the architecture, the cobblestone streets, the beautiful doorways, and the blooming bougainvillea every time I visit.

Good Day, Sunshine HEALTHY, YOUTHFUL SKIN STARTS WITH A DAILY SPF THAT WON’T WEIGH YOU DOWN By Tristan Dyer Protecting your skin against UV (ultraviolet) radiation is a year-round commitment that will reveal ample rewards in the long run. Utilizing products with SPF (sun protection factor) actively prevents the accumulation of layers of skin damage, thereby greatly reducing one’s risk of skin cancer and combating signs of premature aging. In recent years, the use of sunscreen has soared in popularity, with many high-end brands now offering options for all skin types as well as eco-friendly alternatives. When searching for a product, remember that texture is key, so beware of oily and dense formulas that are prone to block pores and cause breakouts. The pursuit for the perfect facial sunscreen to integrate into your morning routine ends here with these six lightweight products.

stero’s West Bay Club was a hidden gem when Jennifer and Joe Pavich built their home there in 2006. Sited on 8,686 acres west of U.S. 41, the Estero River runs through the private community, which includes preserved wetlands and quick access to the Gulf of Mexico. While they were thrilled with West Bay’s amenities, their Mediterranean-styled residence¾—formally overdressed in Tuscan ornamentation and heavy architectural elements—no longer fit the lifestyle of the family with three young children. The couple summoned award-winning designer Laurie Walter, CEO and lead designer at Cardamon Design, and senior interior designer and project manager James Gelet to breathe new life into the 3,750-square-foot house. Today, the transitional, contemporary four-bedroom home looks and feels as refreshed as the young, active family. “We cut walls back, created niches, and created some fun, cool spots,” says Walter. As a top-selling real estate agent for Realty World International, Joe is acutely aware of what luxury property buyers are seeking, and he used that knowledge to guide the remodel. Jennifer is a nurse practitioner, anesthetist, and co-owner of the Laser Lounge Spa in Naples. “I was involved in everything with this remod-

el,” Joe says. “In 2019, we gutted the kitchen and added a wet bar to the living room, but Jennifer and Laurie did all of that.” The prior working relationship made this project go smoothly, Walter adds. “It really helped that I’ve known them for so long,” she says. “They built the home and knew exactly what they wanted and what they didn’t.”
IN THE DETAILS
The front and garage facade were streamlined by removing precast fascia designs and window sills; the windows were squared and replaced. Replacing the barrel roof tiles with a charcoal-colored tin rooftop and updating the landscaping were equally important. Inside, modern, greige-colored porcelain plank flooring runs throughout the living spaces in the place of formerly dark terra-cotta and marbleized tile. “Greige (gray plus beige) is a designer’s dream because it goes with anything and lives well with kids, pets, and the frequent entertaining Jennifer and Joe do,” Gelet explains. Columns in the foyer were removed and Gelet created a custom wood-framed focal point with a wave-like wall covering in the airy entryway. The goal “was to mimic an underwater space,” Gelet says.
Posh yet practical, living room furnishings are clad in textured, neutral performance fabrics. Accents of soft blue reflect Southwest Florida’s sky and sea. A petrified-wood coffee table with Lucite legs appears to float in the center of the room. The kitchen was gutted to make way for an open workspace punctuated by clean, white cabinetry, a subway tile backsplash, and a Wolf range with distinctive red knobs and a custom range hood that matches the cabinets. “We look for the good bones in our projects and are big proponents of not spending money when it’s not necessary,” says Walter. Because the couple frequently entertains family and friends, a large, welcoming farmhouse dining table was selected for the formal dining space because it is as inviting as it is practical. In the cozy family room, a sprawling, cushiony sectional sofa comfortably accommodates the entire family. Prior to the makeover, family photos were in every room but Walter charmingly highlighted their importance by placing all of them on one wall. A custom cabinet holds the children’s tech toys and other media paraphernalia. Soft and serene, the easygoing neutral master bedroom exudes comfort and peace. Unseen is the expansive walk-in closet. The adjoining master bath is clad in easy-to-maintain porcelain tile that replicates exquisite dolomite marble. NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2022

Prior to the renovation, columns blocked Joe’s views of the television located in the 1,600-square-foot outdoor living area. These days, it’s Joe’s favorite spot to watch television with his children. Frequently used, the outdoor dining area is well-appointed. The solid concrete table can surely withstand strong storm events. Just outside the lanai is one of the liveliest places in the home—the pool, where the children spend hours frolicking, and the firepit, where many a marshmallow is roasted. The Paviches were thrilled to work with Walter again; and Joe knows the renovation will lead to a higher selling price down the road. “When they laid out our furniture, it created a whole different look,” Joe says. “Everything turned out so well. We are happy with our home. We get so many compliments.” Laughter and tears of joy accompanied the grand reveal when the family returned to their completed home. “We greeted them at the door with Champagne and the kids came in screaming,” Walter says. “This project was one of my favorites.” « The original facade (left) was stripped of its Mediterranean influences and the landscape was updated to complement the modernized home.

errazzo, that speckled surface often associated with 1920s Art Deco and midcentury design, has leaped from the past to modern high-end design, getting shoutouts from Pinterest and Vogue. It’s also moved outside to cover patio decks, driveways, walkways, and staircases, often mimicking the look of brick pavers, marble, cobblestone, wood, paving stones, and shell-embedded tabby. Naples landscape architect Ellin Goetz appreciates terrazzo’s versatility and durabil-

ity—and the freedom it lends to her designs. She favors unpolished, shell-embedded pavers for driveways, pathways, and outdoor sitting areas as an homage to Naples’ historic tabby construction. Since discovering locally manufactured terrazzo from Earth Surfaces of America 15 years ago, she’s created custom looks for public projects, such as the Naples Botanical Garden and the new children’s garden at Trinity-by-the-Cove, and private residential clients, using terrazzo for walkways, pool decks, and pool coping. “It’s such a wonderful material. I can be creative in the shape of pools and steps. I like to keep it subtle and natural outside to look like Florida as much as it possibly can,” says Goetz. “I always want to use local materials when I can. I try to promote that it’s locally made and not dug out of the earth [overseas]. It’s a nice alternative to stone. It’s a dense, high-quality product that doesn’t degrade.” ENDLESS OPTIONS Naples-based Earth Surfaces started as a mosaic specialist in the 1990s, switching to high-end, cement-based terrazzo products after it could no longer compete with imports, says owner Tony DiNorcia. The company works with landscape architects, builders, and interior designers, producing custom pavers, large- and small-format terrazzo tiles, and countertops and vanities on-site. “We manufacture custom terrazzo surfaces in any shape, size, color, finish, and content,” says DiNorcia. “There’s a lot of artistry involved.”

Concrete provides a durable, long-lasting surface that won’t yellow from sun exposure like resin-based terrazzo. Earth Surfaces’ extensive inventory includes classic marble-chipped terrazzo invented centuries ago in Venice, Italy, as well as recycled glass, crushed granite, and beach pebbles. A variety of shells—including iridescent abalone and mother-of-pearl, conch chips and swirls, and shell cross sections—also create organic variegations. Phosphorescent stones glow in the dark, adding ambience to a powder room countertop or pool coping. “Ninety percent of our content is recycled,” says DiNorcia, whose father and brothers were stonemasons in his native Italy. “People come in with paint samples, wood surfaces, pool tile, furniture, and drapes they want to match.” Goetz appreciates the menu of materials for custom projects. “It’s like baking a cake,” says Goetz. “I choose the ingredients. If I want to use Florida shells and abalone with a shimmer
or recycled glass, Tony makes it.” Earth Surfaces has also created large-scale terrazzo installations featuring nature-inspired abstract designs as part of revitalization projects in downtown Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Coral Gables’ famed Miracle Mile. For the Trinity-by-the-Cove project, Goetz replicated the church’s distinctive architectural window in the pattern of Earth Surface’s Playa pavers. DiNorcia also makes terrazzo benches and planters and handcrafted statementmaking agate tabletops in blue, green, and natural colors. «

Treasure of the
CARIBBEAN
Go off-the-grid at eco-luxe resort Secret Bay in unspoiled Dominica By Paul Rubio
For those who dream of traveling to undiscovered destinations, the Caribbean likely doesn’t come to mind. Yet, among the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles lies a secluded island nation underscored by dramatic beauty and a lost-in-time allure. Welcome to Dominica, a magnificent, mountainous, independent country, 72,000 citizens strong, hidden between more touristed neighbors Martinique, St. Lucia, and Guadeloupe, and not to be confused with
the Dominican Republic. Rightfully known as the Nature Island, this untouched land teems with extreme natural phenomena such as towering waterfalls, boiling lakes, and coral reefs that bubble from geothermal activity. Across its 289.6 square miles of rugged terrain and lush rainforest, biodiverse Dominica harbors more than 1,000 species of flowering plants and 170 bird species, and its coastal waters receive 20 species of whales and dolphins, including resident populations of sperm whales. Among the land and sea splendor, an intimate, adults-only eco-resort opens this uncharted paradise to the luxury traveler. At Secret Bay, understated cliff-top villas command Dominica’s superlative views, while an array of amenities invite relaxation and an on-site adventure center ensures exhilarating excursions and maximum exploration. An all-villa boutique property within the esteemed Relais & Châteaux collection, Secret Bay began as a personal residence-turned-passion project. Back in the late 2000s, Dominica-born entrepreneur Gregor Nassief purchased a prime 4-acre tract above Secret and Tibay beaches along the island’s rainforest-clad northwest. Soon, his father-in-law, award-winning Latin American architect Fruto Vivas, presented Nassief and daughter Sandra with a blueprint for their dream home in the Caribbean wilds. The grand residence metamorphosed into a more approach-
able, minimalist, wood-and-glass abode, rife in transitional indoor-outdoor space and sensibly blended into the landscape. The stunning result, now known as Zabuco Honeymoon Villa I, inspired Nassief to embark on a larger master plan, acquiring the surrounding land and developing a worldclass, light-on-earth resort. Nowadays, Secret Bay comprises a Welcome House, 12 resort villas (and counting), in-progress Secret Bay Residences, Zing Zing Restaurant, Gommier Spa, lounger-lined Gwiyavye’ Lap Pool & Bar, a sprawling wellness pavilion, a watersports hut, and more, cast across 40-plus acres. The dozen residential-style villas are intended for languid days in nature, each with floor-to-ceiling glass doors, outdoor dining areas, rain showers, and plunge pools. Also found in every unit, a gourmet kitchen supports homespun meals— though guests tend to leave the cooking to their dedicated villa host or an on-demand private chef. For those with the recommended breakfast and dinner package, Secret Bay prestocks the fridge and pantry, culling guest selections from a long list of choices. Every morning, your villa host will whip up breakfast, whether that be a healthy, organic spread of fruits and proteins or a local feast of eggs, saltfish, and bakes (fried dough). Dinners can also be prepared or delivered in-villa, but most favor dining at treetop Zing Zing Restaurant. Here, no two nights are the same thanks to everchanging selections based on fresh catch

and daily harvest. However, it doesn’t hurt to request the epic tuna escabeche or the grilled calypso chicken in advance. Elsewhere on property, familiar Caribbean activities are on tap. Consider working on your tan while sipping rumspiked cocktails around the pool, decompressing on the beach, or getting pampered in the spa. But hop in a kayak and you’ll quickly realize that this is anything but the posh Caribbean Clockwise from right: Tuna escabeche, calypso chicken, and a table at Zing Zing Restaurant, which features a new multicourse menu every night.
ordinary. Cross through natural arches and stumble upon sea caves before claiming all of swoon-worthy Secret Beach for yourself. (Your villa host can arrange a beachfront picnic to heighten the experience.) Take a boat north along the coastline to admire the uninhabited mountain-meets-sea grandeur, intersected by limestone pinnacles and formidable cliffs that host seabird colonies by the dozens. Venture south and under the sea at Champagne Reef, which explodes with billions of tiny bubbles from active fumaroles and a full cast of marine life that have adapted to these alien conditions.
Head inland and ogle skyscraping waterfalls that rival Hawaii’s and Costa Rica’s cascades; the scenery is so cinematic, in fact, that Dominica’s misty rivers and verdant rainforests have served as backdrops in some of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Hike the footpaths of UNESCO-recognized Morne Trois Pitons National Park and reach the world’s second largest boiling lake, swimmable gorges, and emerald pools. Search for rare and colorful birds on a segment of the 115-mile Waitukubuli National Trail—the Caribbean’s longest—under the guidance of Dominica’s foremost birding expert, Bertrand Jno Baptiste, aka “Dr. Birdy.” While avid bird-watchers call on Dr. Birdy for primo encounters with the endemic Sisserou parrot, the pro’s enthusiasm, knowledge, and tried-and-true method for finding avifauna can convert any skeptic into an outright bird lover. (Spoiler: Dr. Birdy possesses an uncanny ability to mimic countless birdcalls and often communicates directly with his feathered friends.) In total, both Secret Bay and greater Dominica shine as two of the Caribbean’s final secrets. To be sure, a relatively remote location and inaccessibility have been instrumental in maintaining this innocence. In December 2021, American Airlines introduced the first ever nonstop flights to Dominica from the United States, departing from Miami. Yes, this makes the once exhausting journey far easier, but change and growth loom. Our advice: Visit Secret Bay and Dominica now while it’s still possible to experience this Caribbean paradise in its purest form. (secretbay.dm) « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2022

ig-ship cruising is back—in a big way. After a lengthy pandemic pause, major cruise lines are rolling out one stunning ship after another, freshly minted with state-of-the-art amenities, elevated dining spaces, and contemporary designs in tune with the desires of today’s cruising elite. One such vessel is the MSC Seashore, a new incarnation of the Italian brand’s slick Seaside class fleet, dubbed Seaside Evo (which stands for evolution). With nearly 140,000 square feet for outdoor endeavors, the 2,270-room mega-ship features the highest ratio of outdoor space per guest of any MSC ship and several firsts for the brand. Think: a seafront boardwalk, an aft infinity pool (bringing the total pool count to six), a massive aquapark, and an impressive glass skywalk. The onboard excitement never ends thanks to more than 300 entertainment activities per sailing, plus prolific amenities to enjoy at your leisure. It’s not uncommon to start a day with some fitness, pampering, and sport in the Aurea Spa and Gym and Deck 20’s Sports Arena, followed by sunbathing and languishing over a boozy lunch. Later, play some blackjack, enjoy live music, attend an acrobatic show, and then retreat to the virtual reality–fueled Hall of Games or hit one of the late-night bars. Specialized options for dining and drinking are many. Standouts include the vibrant Kaito Sushi Bar, where nigiri and sashimi are delivered via conveyor belts; Venchi 1878 Chocolate and Coffee Bar, a new
IVAN SARFATTI
Innovator of the Seas outpost at sea by the eponymous Italian gourmet chocolatier; and 1920s-inspired lounge Le Cabaret Rouge, where you can catch a different song and dance performance nightly. The latest and greatest in cruise excess notwithstanding, the MSC Seashore’s strongest attributes are its eco-conscious design and approach. While big cruising and environmental responsibility are not commonly aligned, MSC is poised to change this narrative, delivering on an action plan for zeroimpact cruise operations. In this vein, the MSC Seashore houses some of today’s most advanced environmental technologies, evidenced in the onboard wastewater-treatment systems, fresh-water production plant, noise-management system, and more. Furthermore, one of the ship’s regular destinations, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, is a working restoration and conservation project. The private island off Bimini is a former industrial wasteland that MSC has transformed into a thriving, 64-square-mile marine reserve flanked by sparkling white-sand beaches. Overall, the MSC Seashore marks the dawn of a new generation of big-ship cruising that considers at once grand amenities for luxury travelers and the industry’s environmental impact. Experience this innovator of the seas on sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas from Port Miami through November 2022 and on itineraries through South America and Europe in the months following. The 2023 Range Rover SV takes automotive luxury to a soaring new height—and it can still climb mountains By Howard Walker A toast to luxury. A toast to the good life. And life is definitely good in the back seat of the all-new, best-of-the-best 2023 Range Rover SV. A flute of Cristal, perhaps? Open the chiller compartment in the rear console to find a bottle of bubbles, plus a pair of cut-crystal glasses. Of course, you’ll need a table to perch them on. At the touch of a button, a handcrafted “club” table levitates majestically from the console. Another button initiates the rising, flute-holding cupholders. Time to recline. The seat goes back, the footrest comes up, and the builtin massager gets to work. How about a little Beethoven or Bach? Crank up the 1,600-watt Meridian surround-sound system, with its 35 speakers and noise-canceling tech, and you’ll be transported to, well, ecstasy. Here is a vehicle that spreads opulence around its cabin like a drywaller spreads plaster. I’m sure if Range Rover designers could have gotten away with hanging chandeliers from the rearview mirror or encrusting the door handles with rubies, they would have. 68
This Range Rover SV is the creation of Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations department in merrie olde England. Much like Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke division, it can satisfy a customer’s every automotive fantasy. It’s all part of Land Rover’s mission to make this new-from-the-tires-up “Rangie” the very pinnacle of SUV luxury—and deliver the kind of superlative experience an owner might expect of a superyacht or a private jet. Naturally, they plan to charge for it. The flagship SV long-wheelbase model kicks off at $219,650. The example I spent a couple of blissful days piloting across Napa Valley stickers at $262,000. Keep checking the options boxes, and you can easily top $280,000. You can pay more for a wellequipped Bentley Bentayga Speed or Lamborghini Urus, but, in my opin-

ion, this new Rover is in a class of its own. At the core of all this luxury is a new aluminum chassis and body structure that’s reckoned to be as much as 50 percent stiffer than the outgoing model’s. It also boasts new independent air suspension, rear-axle steering, active roll bars, and 23-inch wheels. Powering the SV is a new BMW-sourced 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, good for 523 hp and a muscley 553 lb-ft of torque. That’s power-a-plenty to sweep this all-conquering 4x4 from standstill to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and cross continents at a bullet train–like 155 mph. Before you hit the road, just gaze at this work of modernist automotive art. It is spectacular, with its broad-shouldered stance, floating roof, clamshell hood, and flush door handles and glass. While the overall design

is a little on the evolutionary side, changes to the rear end—with those blacked-out vertical taillights and lack of adornment—deliver a fresh, sophisticated feel. The current 2022 Range Rover is the flagship of a whole new lineup of models that are now offered in standard or long-wheelbase lengths, with pricing from $105,850. And, for the first time, surprisingly roomy third-row seating is available. Coming later for 2023 is a plug-in hybrid version with 434 hp and 48 miles of electric range, plus a highly anticipated all-electric version due in 2024. But this, this Range Rover SV is without a doubt the most luxurious, most desirable 4x4. I’ll raise a glass to that. «

Flying FINN
Axopar’s new 45-foot XC Cross Cabin is an SUV for the water By Howard Walker It’s rare for a boat brand to be instantly recognizable. So many fall into the floating Clorox bottle category: generic, practical, functional, yet easily forgettable. Not so for Axopar. Since 2014, the Finnish builder has been cranking out 22- to 37-foot day boats that have been setting the market on fire. So far, more than 3,500 examples have been sold around the globe. It’s easy to see why. With their razor-sharp axe bow, distinctive twin-step hull, and faintly militaristic lines, these go-fast day boats spin heads from Miami to Maine. See one screaming up behind you, piercing waves at 50 knots, and you half expect Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt to be at the helm, chasing the baddies in some new blockbuster novel. Building on the success of its 37-footer, Axopar is now dipping a toe into luxury waters with its brand-new 45 XC Cross Cabin flagship. In the process, it’s creating what just might be the perfect day cruiser for Floridian families. 70
Yes, the hull shape stays largely the same, with that impossible-tomiss bow, low freeboard, and straked hull. But what’s different—and arguably the boat’s greatest appeal—is that dramatic pilothouse. In addition to its wraparound tinted glass windows and workboat-like, angled windshield, the cabin has twin-sliding side doors that enable you to flood the helm area with that sweet ocean breeze. Want even more fresh air? Either or both of the canvas sunroofs can glide open with the touch of a button. Plus, for the ultimate in alfresco living while at anchor, simply drop the built-in balcony doors nestled within each side of the hull. The seating layout inside the pilothouse is equally versatile. At the helm station, with its 360-degree visibility, there are three seats in a row. Behind them is a well-equipped galley station (with a grill, sink, and fridge) that can move backwards and forwards on sliders. At the back is a U-shaped sofa, complete with a fold-out, swiveling table that can easily accommodate up to 10 diners. While the 45 XC Cross Cabin is a terrific day boat, there’s a cabin up front with a double berth, a separate toilet, a shower, and lots of storage. It’s here that you’ll find one more Axopar party trick: electronic gullwing hatches that rise, like the wings of a cormorant, to fill the cabin with air and light.

Axopar prides itself on total flexibility, which means the new 45 is available in four other layouts: a fully open Spyder, the TTop, the longer Sun-Top, and the Cross Top. That being said, there’s one more cool option with the 45 Cross Cabin, and that’s a second sleeping cabin. It can be added to the stern cockpit and offers two extra beds and another head and shower—a perfect option for weekend guests. Power for this needle-nosed rocket ship comes from a trio of 4.6-liter 300-hp Mercury Verado V8s (900 hp in total) that can punch the 15,400-pound 45 XC to a top speed of 45-plus knots. Throttle back to the Axopar’s 20-knot sweet spot, and the fuel economy will reportedly rival any fast 45-footer on the market. And, because the hull’s low freeboard and cabin roof help to reduce the boat’s center of
gravity, Axopar claims impressive handling in gnarly seas. That, and a super-smooth ride. All Axopar models are built on an automotive-style production line at a state-of-the-art factory in Poland. Judging by the examples I’ve toured at boat shows, the quality is impressive. There’s a Florida connection here too: Axopar’s main Southeast distributor is in Fort Lauderdale. «

While many Naples residents flee for the summer, there’s plenty to appreciate in the area, even when things turn sultry. For proof, consider Scott and Jennifer O’Dell. During the week, you’ll find this well-established local couple working side by side at The Wellington Group at Morgan Stanley, a wealth-management team they cofounded. When the weekends come, however, they “throttle back,” as Scott says, and spend their days relaxing together. The pair enjoy the best of the Paradise Coast, from savoring food and drink to sightseeing and littoral pursuits. Twenty-three years ago, when they had the opportunity to move to Naples from East Norwalk, Connecticut, they jumped. At the time, Scott worked for A.G. Edwards, a fiNAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2022

nancial firm that allowed him to relocate to the Sunshine State. The thought of living in Naples excited them, so they packed up and, with sons Ryan and Colin (now 25 and 23, respectively), settled in the longstanding community of the Vineyards, where they still reside today. If you ask the O’Dells, life is just better in Southwest Florida. “It’s just easy to live in this region—everything is easier,” says Jennifer. WEATHERING STORMS Living in Southwest Florida may be more carefree than in other parts of the country, especially in the winter, but that doesn’t mean life passes without problems or complications. “Life isn’t always meant to be easy,” says Jennifer. She speaks from experience. In 2001, at the age of 31 and not long after they moved to Naples, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. “It was weird, tough, and scary,” recalls Jennifer. She received chemotherapy and underwent a double mastectomy as well as subsequent breast reconstruction and a preventive hysterectomy. “I was aggressive about [my treatment],” she explains. “Everyone has problems, but we’re on this earth for certain lessons and our spirits grow through our experiences.” Just a few years following Jennifer’s triumph over cancer, Scott had a serious health scare when he was diagnosed with a lifethreatening bacterial infection. Suffering from what’s known as a retropharyngeal abscess, a condition affecting the lymph NAPLES BOTANICAL GARDEN

nodes in the back of the throat, he was placed in the intensive care unit. He lay unconscious for several days and was given a 50 percent chance of survival. Thankfully, after a series of surgeries, Scott made a full recovery. And, like Jennifer, whom Scott affectionately refers to as “Blondie,” he has no despondence in his tone; instead, he exudes only perseverance. “It doesn’t matter how many times you get hit; it matters that you keep getting up,” says Scott.

WORK HARD, PLAY HARD Not all couples could work together day in and day out, but Scott and Jennifer have developed an approach that serves them well. “Sometimes we can butt heads a bit,” says Jennifer, who works as insurance planning director for The Wellington Group, “but having a larger team [at work] changes the dynamic.” Scott, a senior vice president for the company, agrees, adding, “We are used to not letting work disrupt us when we’re off.” While summer seems to decelerate the Naples lifestyle, the O’Dells stay bustling with activities they find difficult to fit in during the busier winter season. “We have more time [in summer] and can take advantage of our beautiful surroundings,” says Jennifer. When it’s time for dolce far niente, the O’Dells indulge in the best of what Naples offers, including Naples Botanical Garden, the 170-acre gem featuring plants from around the globe. “My love for the garden started about 20 years ago,” says Scott. “It’s a beautiful place— just gorgeous—and they do such an amazing job of evolving and keeping it fresh, even for those who visit it often.” Jennifer and Scott—the latter a former United States merchant mariner—also relish the lazier days of summer aboard their boat with their dog, Paco, in tow. They take day excursions to places in and around Keewaydin Island and Marco Island, such as Cape Romano. In addition to spending time “We love to enjoy the boat and also walk at the beach, the O’Dells along the beach,” says Jennifer. “We’re on the enjoy boating excursions to Cape Romano (top left) and boat just about every weekend. SPREADING SUNSHINE Outside of work and leisure time, the O’Dells—often in partnership with The Wellington Group—are highly philanthropic and have supported more than 20 organizations over the years. The pair frequently focus on groups that support veterans, women and children, and the arts. “We try to ensure our community’s core is taken care of,” says Scott. “It’s about making a positive difference and assisting people who face or who have faced adversity and helping them come out on the other side.” Jennifer adds, “Supporting our veterans is very important; these causes are special to us. My father—and Scott’s, too—served in World War II.” One well-known local organization the O’Dells have devoted time and effort to is Freedom Waters Foundation, which enhances the lives of children, individuals with special needs, and veterans through therapeutic boating experiences. “Scott and Jennifer are extremely generous and loving people,” says Debra Frenkel, founder and executive director of the foundation. “They give so much to the community. In fact, they were the first event sponsors of our Kind Mariners Ball.” The O’Dells have proudly supported other organizations, including Celebrity Martini Glass Auction, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, Collier Child Care Resources, American Cancer Society, and Parkinson’s Association of Southwest Florida. Jennifer also serves on the board of the United Arts Council of Collier County. In Naples, there are countless means to dedicate oneself philanthropically, and Jennifer and Scott cast a broad net. “There are so many ways, so many things to do to help. It’s about supporting people who have struggled,” reiterates Scott—and perhaps making the lives of others so much sunnier. « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2022

Between May and October, tens of thousands of endangered sea turtles—mainly loggerheads, greens, and leatherbacks—arrive on Florida’s shores to nest. Approximately two months later, hatchlings emerge from the sand and begin the journey called life. Lucky for us, several coastal parks and organizations host seasonal walks in search of nesting turtles and their offspring. Some of our favorite experiences take place at Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, which boasts the highest concentration of nesting loggerhead turtles in the western hemisphere. Here, Sea Turtle Conservancy, Friends of the Carr Refuge, Stella Maris Environmental Research, and others lead these encounters, which typically occur at night or very early in the morning. Rainbow Springs, at the headwaters of the Rainbow River, is known for water so clear you can see all the way to the bottom. Located 3 miles off Naples, Keewaydin Island is one of the largest unbridged islands in Southwest Florida. The majority of its 1,300 acres is conserved land, part of the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (rookerybay.org) and home to a rich habitat and excellent shelling. The northern tip boasts pioneer history and a dozen privately owned cottages that are sometimes available to rent. There is no infrastructure on the island—and no public dock or bathroom facilities. Most visitors make it a day trip on a private or rented boat or through charter and sightseeing companies. Rookery Bay, Hemingway Water Shuttle, and Pure Naples, among others, offer trips. This slice of paradise is close to the sophisticated culture of Marco Island and Fifth Avenue South. The Inn on Fifth and its Club Level Suites (innonfifth.com) are within 10 minutes of Pure Naples’ pontoon docked at Tin City on the Gordon River (purenaples.com), and the journey out passes Naples landmarks, the mansions of Port Royal, and mangrove-fringed barrier islands. Being isolated on a sandbar of an island with more coves than people may be an urbanite’s fantasy, but for those of us within driving distance of the Florida Keys, it’s as real as the coconuts that line these shores. Little Palm Island is the stuff of fairy tales—remote, lush, magical—and it’s located in the Straits of Florida, a short boat or seaplane ride from Little Torch Key. The 4-acre private island has a long history as a getaway for luminaries, including several celebrities and a U.S. president. (Harry S. Truman famously spent time here in the 1940s, fishing for tarpon and entertaining dignitaries.) These days, Little Palm Island honors its past by embracing a socialclub aesthetic that dials back to the heyday of American royalty. Steeped in romance, it is a favorite of honeymooning couples and anyone looking for a secluded hideaway where top-notch dining, wellness offerings, and just about any activity in or on the water are apropos to the experience. If you’ve ever spent time in a treehouse, you already know what the thatched-roof bungalows feel like. Elevated from the sand and surrounded by wood-plank decks, these elegantly tropical accommodations come with private beaches, hammocks, firepits, outdoor tubs and showers—in short, everything you need to ignite castaway fantasies. THE TERRACE HOTEL LAKELAND Rewind to 1924, when the Lakeland Terrace Hotel debuted as Florida’s first air-conditioned hotel. Back then, little Lakeland was experiencing a big economic boom, fueled by Florida’s growing status as a vacation destination. Soon, the high-rise hotel overlooking serene Lake Mirror became a favorite of the roaring twenties elite. Fast-forward nearly 100 years, and today’s traveler can again bask in the glory of the 88-room property, reinvented after a head-to-toe renovation as The Terrace Hotel Lakeland, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. The Breakers
The grande dame of Palm Beach doesn’t wear Oscar de la Renta and a tiara—but she does look amazing for her 126 years. The Breakers, Palm Beach’s most iconic hotel whose history dates back to the Gilded Age, was founded by Henry Morrison Flagler as a seaside resort for the wealthy patrons traveling south on his famed railroad. Flagler’s descendants still own the resort and have preserved his ideals of timeless elegance and refined service. The Palm Beach experience really is incomplete without a stay here—or at least a visit to classic Breakers restaurants like the Seafood Bar and The Circle, which serves a princely Scenes from The Breakers, clockwise breakfast daily and from above: The lobby, with its vaulted a Sunday brunch to ceiling and design by Adam D. This South Beach icon has been cracking the claws of Florida’s prized stone crabs for more than a century—and diners still can’t get enough. While some reservations are available at this old-school institution, prepare for long waits to score chilled delicacies in jumbo, large, select, or medium, gently cracked and served with a secret mustard sauce plus a very necessary bib. When visiting outside of stone crab season (which takes place October 15 to May 1), enjoy an array of succulent dishes and sides that are almost as famous as its crabs: the chopped salad, blackened mahi-mahi, hashed brown potatoes, skinny fried sweets, and key lime pie, to name a few. CAP’S Place
THE YEARLING RESTAURANT
When it opened in 1928, Cap’s Place was a casino and speakeasy likely hidden from the law because of its secret location: It’s perched on an island off Lighthouse Point and can only be reached by boat. We love a restaurant with a checkered past. If you can look past the shabby-chic buildings, you’ll find some of the best seafood in Florida. You can’t go wrong with anything on Cap’s menu, but we’re here to tell you that the seafood-stuffed Maine lobster is worthy of last-meal status. And don’t skip the Okeechobee hearts of palm salad; it’s the real deal, and you don’t find that very often. In a day of destination dining and glitzy chef-driven restaurants, Broward County’s oldest—and most colorful—restaurant still reigns supreme. (capsplace.com) —D.N.

Florida’s Greek village, Tarpon Springs, offers a glimpse at the Hellenic culture, from sponge diving to tiny shops selling blue glass eyes to supper clubs with loud Greek music and patrons dancing the zeibekiko. FIORELLI WINERY & VINEYARD Perhaps the most traditional of all Florida’s wineries, Fiorelli Winery in Bradenton has been making dry, semi-sweet, and sweet wines fermented from grapes for 20 years. The Fiorelli team produces nine wines on their scenic property, which overlooks acres of Muscadine-filled vines. The Breeze variety—a blend of Noble and Valvin Muscat—is a medium sweet wine that makes for a lighter riff on the classic rum mojito. The winery also regularly hosts events with live music, wine tastings, and food. (fiorelliwinery.com)
BY JULES ARON hile Florida might seem like an unlikely choice for a wine destination, it is actually one of the original homelands of American wine. Spanish missionaries harvested native Muscadine grapes to make wine as early as the sixteenth century, and Florida is currently home to around 20 certified wineries. These wineries and additional vineyards produce wines from a variety of Muscadine grapes as well as tropical fruits and citrus varieties—many of which make a great base for cocktails. From traditional vineyards to lush courtyards and oceanfront destinations, Florida’s wineries and their flavorful creations are worth exploring. Here’s a look at five properties and their unique wines.

KEEL & CURLEY WINERY
Rum, sugar, mint, lime— the Cuban mojito needs no introduction. For days when you fancy something lighter, this lowerproof option is sure to satisfy. 1 oz. white rum 1 oz. Fiorelli Breeze wine ½ oz. lime juice ½ oz. simple syrup 8 mint leaves Mint and lime wedges or wheels to garnish In a shaker with ice, add all the ingredients and shake thoroughly. Strain into a glass with ice and garnish with mint and fresh lime.
For a more unconventional wine experience, visit Keel & Curley in Plant City. Here, instead of vineyards, you’ll walk through fields of blueberries. In Florida, blueberry wine production comes in second behind grape, and Keel & Curley is one of two main producers with the Florida Farm Winery seal of approval (the other is Island Grove Wine Company in Hawthorne). Using Southern Highbush blueberry varieties— which are most adaptive to Florida’s temperate winters—vintners ferment the berries with the skins on, just like with Cabernet or Merlot. The resulting wine is complex in flavor, with a nose that most resembles a Cabernet or Syrah. Keel & Curley makes three types of blueberry wines, ranging from sweet to semi-sweet to dry, as well as a blueberry rosé, a black raspberry Merlot, a wild berry Pinot Noir, sangria, a strawberry Riesling, a peach Chardonnay, and a key lime wine. (keelfarms.com)
The official cocktail of Wimbledon, the quintessential Pimm’s Cup is made with Pimm’s (a gin liqueur that oyster bar owner James Pimm created in the 1840s), lemon juice, and ginger ale, served over ice with an abundance of mint and fresh fruit. The Somm’s Cup calls for a dry blueberry wine for a refreshingly light, fruitforward variation. 2 oz. Pimm’s No. 1 1 oz. Keel & Curley’s dry blueberry wine ½ oz. lemon juice 2 oz. ginger beer, to top Cucumber spear or slice, mint sprig, seasonal berries, and citrus to garnish
In a Collins glass, add Pimm’s, wine, and lemon juice and stir. Add pebble or crushed ice, top with ginger beer, and stir gently to mix. Garnish lavishly with cucumber, fresh mint, berries, and citrus.

SCHNEBLY REDLAND’S WINERY You won’t find any Muscadines or traditional Florida wines at Schnebly Redland’s Winery in Homestead. Instead, this “southernmost winery in the United States” is home to specialty wines made from exotic fruits such as avocado, mango, lychee, passion fruit, guava, and coconut. Take in the views of the covered courtyard and waterfalls while sipping on a glass of tropical fruit wine. Frequent luaus with DJs and fire dancers up the fun factor even more. Schnebly Redland’s wines are ripe for making mixed drinks. The chocolate passion fruit wine, for example, boasts subtle cocoa notes that are delightfully spotlighted in this riff on the New York Sour. (schneblywinery.com)
STRONG TOWER VINEYARD & WINERY
The Cobbler is a pre-Prohibition cocktail made with Sherry, sugar, and fresh fruit that is shaken and enjoyed over crushed ice. Author Charles Dickens popularized this nearly two-centuries-old drink when the titular character of his novel The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit described his delectable first sip. This modern version uses Strong Tower’s own Port. ½ oz. fresh lemon juice 5 berries 2 oz. Strong Tower’s Reserve Port ½ oz. mezcal Fruit and citrus to garnish
In a shaker tin, muddle the berries with the lemon juice. Add the Port and mezcal. Shake and strain over crushed ice. Garnish with fresh Florida fruit and citrus.

Nestled on 11 verdant acres in Spring Hill, Strong Tower Vineyard & Winery is well-known for its Norton, Ison, and Carlos Muscadine grapes. It also offers fruit wines (when in season) including blueberry, strawberry, and even apple blossom. In total, the winery makes more than 15 wines, all of which are produced, bottled, and labeled on-site—and some have even won awards at the Florida International Wine Competition. One of Strong Tower’s most unique wines is the Reserve Port, which is made from the rich Norton grape and features flavors of dark chocolate, black cherry, and plum. (strongtowervineyard.com)
The perfect balance of fruity red wine and smoky-sweet bourbon, the New York Sour (also known as the Continental Sour or the Southern Whiskey Sour) is a classic for a reason. This sour cocktail dates back to the late 1800s and includes a red wine float, which adds both texture and acidity, as well as an appealing crimson hue.
2 oz. bourbon 1 oz. lemon juice ½ oz. simple syrup (1 part sugar, 1 part water) 1 ½ oz. Schnebly Redland’s chocolate passion fruit wine

Nestled 25 miles outside Orlando, Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards is Florida’s largest premium winery. The 127-acre property boasts a picturesque landscape of rolling vineyards dotted with hybrid grapes such as Stover, Suwannee, and Blanc du Bois as well as varieties of Muscadines including Carlos, Welder, and Noble. Among Lakeridge’s most popular bottles are the Southern Red and Southern White sweet wines, the semi-sweet Sunblush, and a semi-dry Chablis, all blended with different Muscadines. Other choices include the Pink Crescendo, a sweet sparkling wine ideal for Florida’s tropical climate. Stop by Lakeridge on a Saturday or Sunday for Weekends at the Winery, complete with live music, food, and—of course—wine. DINING
“A lot of cooks avoid brisket because it takes too long,” says Brandon Schewe, chef and co-owner of The Bohemian Restaurant in Bonita Springs. His version is first smoked for an hour in an Argentine asador grill using Florida hardwood oak, then finished for seven hours in the oven. Served with roasted bone marrow, the dish is garnished with grilled ciabatta crostini, house-made pickled red onions and garlic confit, grilled lemon, gremolata, and natural jus. Along with his wife, Caitlin, Schewe also owns the nearby Downtown Coffee and Wine Company. The couple is committed to the success of the neighborhood. “At the end of the day, it’s not about us,” he says. “We’re really trying to build downtown Bonita Springs.” (thebohemianbonita.com)

CIVILIZED SIPPING Clockwise from top right: Chartreuse Craft Cocktail Lounge offers a selection of creative beverage options, including the Stoned Oak, the Best Memories, and the Blueberry Yum Yum.
After sampling the craft cocktail culture in cities such as New Orleans and Charleston, Danielle and Stephen Dyer wanted to bring that experience to Southwest Florida. Last June, they teamed up with friend and business partner Peggy Baker to open Chartreuse Craft Cocktail Lounge in downtown Bonita Springs. “I’ve always wanted to own a bar,” says Danielle, who worked in other industries prior to her hospitality career. “I love the cocktail culture, as well as the other aspects of it—the socialization and meeting new people, the music and dancing. I’ve outgrown the club scene, so I wanted a classy lounge that would have some resemblance to a speakeasy.” The drink menu changes quarterly, encompassing 13 original signature cocktails as well as some classics. The team of four bartenders develops the concepts and then works with Danielle to fine-tune the selections. Classic drinks

are identified by their source; for example, the Mai Tai (Trader Vic’s, 1944); Hanky Panky (Ada Coleman, Savoy Hotel, 1898); and Jungle Bird (Jeffrey Ong, Aviary Bar, 1998). Other offerings include a choice of wines and a large list of premium spirits. Cordials and shrubs are made in-house and fresh-squeezed juices take the place of bottled mixers. Dessert is the only food served, which fits a clientele that typically starts or ends an evening at Chartreuse. Takeout dining options are nearby, and customers are allowed to bring in food. The lounge is open until 11 p.m. during the week and 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. There’s no standing room, and Danielle stresses that patience is required to concoct the complex cocktails. “The idea came from what I want as a customer,” she says, “a place where I’d feel comfortable coming after work, or in a gown, or on a Saturday afternoon.” (chartreuselounge.com)
A CULINARY ESCAPE Dining options in Ave Maria expanded in March with the opening of Oasis The Kitchen Lounge in the Town Center. The restaurant is a joint venture between local entrepreneur Phong Ho, owner of Ave Maria’s Tropical Smoothie Café, and chef Michael Jaenvega of steak house Martin Fierro in Naples. “We felt that Ave Maria didn’t have a wide enough range of choices, and we wanted to provide a more elegant dining option,” says Ho. “Our goal was a gourmet kitchen with a Latin flair that would offer a fun, interesting experience.”
The eclectic menu spans a wide variety of culinary styles and has something for everyone. Appetizers range from homemade empanadas to seared ahi tuna and a roasted beet salad. Pastas are garnished with seafood or chicken bruschetta sauce and an assortment of meats and fresh seafood are cooked on the grill. For the full Argentine experience, order the Meat Lovers Grill, consisting of skirt steak, chicken breast, sausage, pork loin, and shrimp. The lunch menu features lighter dishes, such as poke bowls, burgers, and stir-fries.
“We’ve started serving Sunday brunch, and we’re offering weekly specials with dishes not available elsewhere,” says Ho. “We hope to grow along with the community.” (oasiskitchenlounge.com)

Pan-Latin flavors are on display at El Nido, which opened in May at Estero’s Coconut Point. The Sofia family has designed a menu that incorporates influences from throughout South America as well as both the coastal and inland regions of Mexico. “The Latin culture unites families and brings a feeling of togetherness,” says Donna Sofia, who owns El Nido with her husband, Joe. The Sofias have operated restaurants in Coconut Point for nearly two decades and currently own South Fork Grille. “When we started tasting and experimenting with dishes, we were amazed by the combination and complexity of flavors in these cuisines,” she says. Signature starters include tostones de cubano— smashed fried plantains with mojo pork, guacamole, and pickled red onion. Entrées draw from the cuisines of Spain (garlic shrimp and paella Valencia); Argentina (steak asado); and Peru (roast chicken with huacatay

Traditional tacos, burritos, tamales, and enchiladas are available, along with top-shelf tequilas and single-origin coffees. “We felt the area needed a restaurant that exposed people to Latin culture,” says Donna. “Many of our employees are Latin, and they’ve contributed dishes as well. We’ve always been impressed by the passion they bring to their cooking and the energy of sharing it with each other,” she says. “Food brings everyone together.” (elnidoeats.com)

While many may remember ramen as a staple of their impoverished student days, the authentic Japanese dish rises to the level of fine art, with traditional tonkotsu (pork) broth taking up to 12 hours to cook. The trailblazer in Naples was Namba Ramen & Sushi (nambanaples.com), which features three versions of tonkotsu-based ramen as well as a vegan alternative. Ramen lovers now have two new destinations to enjoy the labor-intensive soup. Shojin Ramen Sushi (shojinfl.com) in Fort Myers offers classic tonkotsu. In Naples, Yoko-San Ramen (yokosanramen.com) takes it further, with seven ramen dishes containing chicken, pork, or tofu. Opened in January, Yoko-San is owned by the husband-and-wife team of Jon and On Augsondthung, who also operate Araya Sushi Asian Grill in North Naples and two locations of Fuji Sushi Bar & Asian Bistro—in the Boulevard Shoppes and at The Pointe at Founders Square. Fuji in the Boulevard Shoppes and Yoko-San share an outdoor patio where customers may order and enjoy dishes from both restaurants. “We love to eat ramen every time we go to Japan,” says Jon, “and we wanted to introduce the authentic version to Naples.” The couple invested $30,000 in a 400-liter pressure cooker, which reduces the broth cooking time to two hours and extracts more flavor from the bones. Even so, their tonkotsu is so popular they are making broth every two days. “Ramen is comfort food,” says On. “The flavors are hearty but complex, and the bone broth is healthy for you.”

As temperatures rise, English vintners are giving Champagne a run for its money

ust when you thought there was no possible upside to global warming, along comes English sparkling wine. Although sparkling wine production in the South of England only began in the 1980s, it is now home to more than 100 producers. Most are using the traditional Champagne method and the same grape varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier). The majority of the estates are located in Kent, Sussex, and Surrey, with the largest producers being Gusbourne and Chapel Down. Given that the area has similar soil and topography to the Champagne region across the Channel, success was probably inevitable. Even the house of Taittinger has joined the party, with its first vintage from Kent expected next year.
112
Champagne is frequently the standard by which English sparkling wine is measured, but there are distinctions. While the best English sparklers compare favorably to mass-market Champagne, the real analogy would be to grower Champagne. Most English producers are small, family-run, quality-oriented operations, and many of the wines display a vibrancy and freshness that commercial Champagne lacks. Here, we spotlight some wineries to watch. BALFOUR: Founded by Richard and Leslie Balfour-Lynn, Balfour released its first harvest in 2004. The estate gained recognition when its brut rosé ($60) won a gold medal at the 2007 International Wine Challenge; made in small quantities every year, it’s Balfour’s flagship and

worth seeking out. Straddling the divide between brut and demi-sec, Leslie’s Reserve Gold NV ($45) is filled with tart green apple flavors and good acidity, making it a nice match with seafood and a lovely wine to enjoy on a summer’s day. (balfourwinery.com) GUSBOURNE: Imported by Broadbent Selections, Gusbourne is readily available around the United States. The Estate Brut Reserve 2016 ($55) contains Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. It’s remarkably well-balanced, with a creamy texture and classic Chardonnay flavors of citrus, melon, apple, and pear. It’s also an excellent value for a vintage-dated Brut. (gusbourne.com) CHAPEL DOWN: Kent’s largest producer thumbs its nose at its French counterpart by stating that it operates “without the confines of 350 years’ worth of rules and traditions.” Chapel Down’s Classic Brut NV ($50) is brash and forward on entry, but it fleshes out in the mid-palate to reveal flavors of vanilla, citrus, custard, and candied fruit, all of which linger on a subtle finish. This charming wine is finding its way onto the shelves of both boutique retailers and big-box stores. (chapeldown.com) RIDGEVIEW: Mike and Christine Roberts established Ridgeview in the South Downs of Sussex in 1995, and it remains a family winery. They produce nonvintage brut (Cavendish and Bloomsbury), blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and several bottlings of rosé. Pale salmon in color, Fitzrovia Rosé NV ($60) blends wild berry flavors with earthy, savory notes. It was deemed good enough for Queen Elizabeth to serve
Hattingley Valley winery in Hampshire, England
to President Obama at Buckingham Palace in 2011. (ridgeview.co.uk) HATTINGLEY VALLEY: Simon Robinson gave up practicing law in 2008 to become a vintner. With the help of winemaker Emma Rice, he transformed this rural Hampshire property into an eco-friendly, stateof-the-art vineyard and winery. Classic Reserve ($45), Hattingley’s nonvintage brut, contains nearly equal parts Chardonnay and black grapes. The clean, fresh texture combines vivid lemon flavors with hints of yeast and brioche. (hattingleyvalley.com) Other English sparkling wines worth investigating include Denbies, Kingscote, Langham, Camel Valley, Nyetimber, Furleigh Estate, Breaky Bottom, Harrow & Hope, Court Garden, and Greyfriars. Distribution is increasing among both boutique retailers and big-box stores, as well as with online sellers such as wine.com. «

WELLNESS
Leaving Work BEHIND According to a recent survey, the Expedia Vacation Deprivation Report 2022, 50 percent of Americans bring their work laptops on vacation and 41 percent often join Zoom calls when they’re off. Working while traveling is common, but you may not be achieving the full benefits of your vacation if you’re click-clacking away pool-
side. It’s essential to get away from everything and decompress, notes Jen Mitchell, founder of Jen Mitchell Travel in Naples. “People think that vacations are a luxury,” she says. “But really, they’re essential.” Mitchell explains that even a short trip can be rejuvenating, lower stress levels, and provide needed time to bond with family or friends. (jenmitchelltravel.com) To make the most of that much-needed break, turn the page and glean a few quick tips from Mitchell.

Set an out-of-office automated reply that includes a coworker’s contact information—not your own. If customers or other employees need assistance while you’re away, ask a coworker to cover for you and include their email address in your out-of-office auto reply. When you do this, “you don’t feel like you have to worry since someone else is taking care of your business while you’re gone,” says Mitchell. (The Expedia survey also found that 63

percent of Americans add their own cell phone numbers to their out-of-office auto replies. Don’t be one of them!) Leave your phone in your room. You may be tempted to bring your phone when visiting local attractions for quick family photos, selfies, and social media posts. However, Mitchell says, we often end up checking our work email or responding to job-related texts and calls. If you have trouble separating work and play, consider

A new baby often means little sleep for new parents. In fact, a recent study of German families found that parents’ sleep not only significantly declined following the first three months of childbirth but also, in some cases, took six years to return to normal. After babysitting her cousin’s 8-month-old for a weekend, Naples resident Jenica Blechschmidt realized an app might help. Soon, Lovebug was born. Instead of reading long books that offer, as Blechschmidt puts it, “a degree in baby sleep,” the handy app provides a simplified, personalized approach. “We give every family turn-by-turn directions on how to help their baby learn to sleep,” she says. Lovebug adjusts to different ages and to changes in sleep schedules, such as when your baby is sick or during family vacations. The app can also track other aspects of your baby’s health and includes video lessons that teach about sleep habits to keep improving rest. “When you haven’t slept for a couple days, you’re a different person,” says Blechschmidt. “We get calls from people talking about how we’ve changed their lives.” (getlovebug.com)

designating one person in your group to carry their phone, or try bringing a separate camera. Schedule time for working. Sometimes, work is unavoidable. But, that doesn’t mean it needs to constantly interfere with your trip. If you’re needed on the job, Mitchell suggests checking emails and completing tasks at designated times that minimally affect your vacation, like while your companions are asleep. The rest of the time, relax and enjoy your days off.

30 YEARS STARTED WITH A
SINGLE STEP
Walking has many health benefits, and you don’t have to do it alone. The Naples Walking Club meets several times per week and has for decades. “I just walk for the love of it and just taking in the beauty,” says Margo Peyrot, one of the club’s original members and a former club president. “You can’t imagine what you’ll see when you walk. You miss so much driving in the car.” Peyrot, who’s now 94, walked with the club until a few years ago when she started having trouble maintaining their pace. She now continues to walk on her own but keeps up with the club in other ways, including through attending their thirtieth anniversary celebration this year. “It’s still growing, and I’m so delighted that the younger ones are taking over,” she says, noting that the club has expanded to more than 70 members. She has decades of memories with close friends in the club doing everything from hiking to volunteering to going on trips—and, of course, walking. “When you’re walking and talking,” she notes, “it’s just a great way to get to know somebody.” (nplswkgclub.clubexpress.com)

NUTRITION FOR STRENGTH
DEFEND YOUR HEALTH WITH MEDICALERT DEVICES WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU FELL AND NEEDED HELP, OR IF YOU WERE UNCONSCIOUS AND COULDN’T TELL PARAMEDICS ABOUT YOUR HEALTH CONDITION OR ALLERGY? HOPEFULLY, YOU’D HAVE A MEDICAL ALERT DEVICE AND MEDICAL ID BRACELET. THE TWO ARE SOMETIMES REFERRED TO INTERCHANGEABLY, BUT THEY MAY EACH BE ESSENTIAL DEPENDING ON YOUR HEALTH SITUATION. “MEDICAL ALERT DEVICES ARE MOST IMPORTANT FOR THOSE AT HIGHER RISK OF FALLS WHO ARE ALONE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS,” EXPLAINS ERIN A. WHITNEY, MD, A DOCTOR AT NAPLES PREMIER CONCIERGE. ON THE OTHER HAND, SHE NOTES, “MEDICAL ID BRACELETS ARE MOST IMPORTANT FOR PERSONS [WHO HAVE] DIFFICULTY COMMUNICATING WITH EMERGENCY RESPONDERS.” FOR MEDICALERT AWARENESS MONTH IN AUGUST, CONSIDER USING ONE OF THESE DEVICES, WHICH COULD INCLUDE A SMARTWATCH THAT DETECTS FALLS

Strength training isn’t just for bodybuilders; it’s essential for everyone, including older adults. According to Lisa Reed, owner of Lisa Reed Fitness in Naples, strength training can improve all areas of your health, from maintaining a healthy blood pressure to improving your balance and increasing bone density. But lifting weights alone isn’t enough. Reed says nutrition is just as important to get all the benefits. Protein, of course, is a staple. For this, Reed recommends eating eggs, chicken, fish, and meat. For the best results, though, you need a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and grains. Don’t try to eliminate entire food groups, she adds; carbs are important for energy and may improve gut health. Also critical are serving sizes. For a healthy and balanced mini meal to complement your strength training, try Reed’s spinach salad. (lisareedfitness.com)
LISA REED’S FAVORITE SPINACH SALAD Use your choice of walnuts or almonds and feta or goat cheese. Reed uses strawberries, but feel free to substitute with your favorite fruit. 1 cup (40 g) spinach /2 cup (20 g) mixed greens 2 oz. grilled chicken 2 large strawberries 1 /8 cup (14 g) goat cheese 1 /2 oz. walnuts 1
OR A BRACELET YOU ORDER ONLINE. AND IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BUY A BRACELET, YOU CAN STILL RECORD YOUR ESSENTIAL MEDICAL INFORMATION IN A DEVICE YOU CARRY EVERY DAY. “WE SHOULD ALL CONSIDER AT A MINIMUM ENTERING OUR BASIC INFORMATION INTO THE MEDICAL ID FEATURE OF OUR PHONES,” WHITNEY ADVISES. SHE EXPLAINS THAT THE FEATURE SHARES IMPORTANT INFORMATION WITH EMERGENCY RESPONDERS WITHOUT THEM NEEDING YOUR PASSCODE. THESE DEVICES AND FEATURES CAN POTENTIALLY SAVE LIVES, SHE ADDS, SO SPREAD THE WORD TO YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY BOTH THIS MONTH AND BEYOND. (NAPLESPREMIER CONCIERGE.COM)

FITNESS
Rest and Reset
It’s frustrating when you’re working out daily but stop seeing results. This stall in progress, also called a fitness plateau, is common and can occur if your body has adapted to repetitive workouts, says Brennan Repp, owner of and lead trainer at ReppFit in Naples. To stave off a stall or to move on from one, Repp says variety is key. This means taking rest days and switching up everything from your number of sets to the types of workouts you’re doing. It may seem counterintuitive to achieve more by doing less, but your body needs time to recover. “Take one step backward to take two steps forward, just to allow your body to do a little bit of a reset,” Repp explains. If you’re not sure how to switch things up, Repp recommends getting creative with a fitness class or workout that’s outside of your comfort zone. And try not to get discouraged if you experience a plateau. “They can be overcome,” he notes. “It happens to us all from time to time.” (reppfit.com)

REAL NEWS
Artistic ASCENT
Mally Khorasantchi, a local painter and resident since 1992, has experienced the evolution of Artis—Naples, but she couldn’t foresee that one of her own works would one day be acquired for The Baker Museum’s permanent collection. Now, her mixed-media triptych, Faked News XIII, is featured in the museum’s “Recent Acquisitions: 2019–Present” through January 8, 2023. “It is a dream come true for a painter to be included in this fantastic collection,” she says. Faked News XIII started as a collage “with many different pieces, cutouts, and shapes¾—very unorganized, some parts clean and white— too much information,” she explains of the work created in 2017. “All objects are clearly seen but make no sense in the combination.” Another piece by the German-born artist from her Oasis series was acquired by the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples. The abstract painting incorporates biomorphic forms such as birds, fish, and roses.
Oasis VII
Her work is represented at Walter Wickiser Gallery in New York City and Harmon-Meek|Modern in Naples, which is hosting a solo exhibition of her work in November. Kristine Meek says her work “resonates with us for its bold colors and thought-provoking juxtapositions of subjects within her work.” (artisnaples. org; mallykhorasantchi.com) NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2022

STILL AT SEA Photographed south of the Naples Pier in early 2021, this vibrant shot of shining sea from Gareth Rockliffe’s series entitled Unity includes an old glass fishing ball—a metaphor that Rockliffe says represents the soul of humanity and serves as a reminder that a universal love links us all. Rockliffe is a fivetime recipient of the title “Honorary Color Master.” He also received an International Color Award from the prestigious Photography Masters Cup in 2010 and 2013, as well as an Outstanding Achievement Award from the International Kontinent Photography Awards. A Naples resident and veteran professional photographer of more than 30 years, Rockliffe has plans to exhibit his work at the Bonita Center for the Arts in February 2023.
