elcome back to Waypoints and another exciting season at Naples Yacht Club, commemorating 75 years of excellence in 2022. Although we celebrated last season, this milestone is worth honoring for the rest of the year. The success of Naples Yacht Club lies in the goals of our founders, Stephen F. Briggs, John G. Sample and Benjamin W. Morris, in the Naples Yacht Club Charter: The Club shall encourage the sport of yachting and provide excellent boating facilities and activities for its members. Further, the Club shall encourage warm social fellowship among the membership. To this end, the Club shall maintain a first-class clubhouse and offer superior dining, outstanding and friendly service, and an active and interesting social calendar.
The combination of these elements has been successful in making the Naples Yacht Club world-renowned. Interest in membership at our club has never been higher than it is today. Our surveys show a highly satisfied membership, which also is evidenced by the number of new members that have been recommended. We have developed a significant wait list which will maintain our membership levels and provide significant capital for maintaining and improving our fantastic facilities. “The Club shall encourage the sport of yachting…” This season’s Cruise Calendar has expanded to accommodate the evergrowing number of cruisers ready to get out on the water and experience the beauty of Florida with their NYC friends. Something new this season is not one but two trips to Boca Grande! The Boca Grande cruise is always the first to sell out. With two trips, we believe that every member that wants to attend will have the opportunity. For the first time in many years, cruisers can also experience cruising “On the Hook” where the night is spent on the boat, at anchor, sharpening your anchor watch skills.
“Further, the Club shall encourage warm social fellowship…” The NYC Social Calendar for the 2022-2023 season is as full as ever. From Motown to Nashville, from Jersey Boys to Margaritaville, I promise there is an event to inspire your dancing shoes. We are excited to welcome a variety of intriguing guest speakers from all over the country for Speaker Dinner Series and Luncheon Speaker Series events. In addition to social events, all members are welcome to join “clubs within the club” events during the season. No formal registration for these “clubs” is required—simply sign up for events that interest you. “The Club shall maintain a first-class clubhouse and offer superior dining, outstanding and friendly service…” I am happy to report that the kitchen and service team continues to strengthen every day. Under the watchful eye of NYC Executive Chef Michael Katz and his culinary team, you can be sure to count on our dining facilities to be your own personal gem where you will be proud to invite family and guests for a world-class experience. Chef ’s sophisticated yet approachable cuisine is ever changing and there is sure to be something for everyone. His passion for food and teaching extends to our attentive service team where their warm and friendly approach just might tempt you to try something out of your comfort zone. It is clear there is much to do and taste at NYC this season. I look forward to spending it with you all. Thank you for allowing me to serve the past two years as your Commodore. I have enjoyed my time serving on the board and look forward to handing off the reins to Rick Maxwell at Fleet Review.
See you at the club,

uring the past year, Naples Yacht Club has truly grown in more ways than one. Coming out of a year that created uncertainty, NYC strived to be the beacon of historical steadiness and hospitality for our members that has been expected for 76 years. As an organization, I believe that we have accomplished this through the service and attention to detail that NYC staff takes pride in delivering. And, it goes without saying, the patience, respect, and positive attitudes of our fun-loving members played a big part in successfully navigating pandemic challenges. We have much to look forward to this season! Waypoints is your guide to what to do, and when to do it, at NYC. You will find our robust social calendar and eagerly awaited cruise calendar. We cover important current topics, including the state of our waterways. You will meet some of our many philanthropic-minded members in a first in a series of “Community Conversations.” NYC offers several “clubs within the club,” where you just may meet new friends and discover new ways to have fun. And, of course, you will see new examples of chef ’s creations, and learn what he and his team have in store for another season of gastronomical excellence. As you enjoy this issue, mark your calendars because we always look forward to seeing you at the club!

Community Conversations Near and afar, NYC members make an indelible difference
A
s the oldest private club in Naples, the founders and members of NYC have played key roles in the evolution of this coastal gem on the Gulf of Mexico. There isn’t enough space to list past members’ accomplishments or current members’ contributions to the community, but Waypoints is highlighting the interesting and impactful activities of several of members in what will become an ongoing series.
Naples Historical Society
The future is bright for the Historic Palm Cottage since the next-door property was purchased to protect the street’s character and expand historical exhibits. The Naples Historical Society purchased the 1,530-square-foot, ranch-style home at 163 Twelfth Avenue South and its 1935 guest cottage after the owner offered the nonprofit the right of first refusal to purchase the spread in March 2021 for $4.2 million. Mary S. Smith, chair emeritus of the society’s board of directors, and Past Commodore Stephen B. Smith provided a $1 million matching grant to kick off the successful fundraising effort. Society Chief Executive Officer Elaine Reed is thrilled that the total has been raised to extinguish the mortgage, though another $300,000 is being raised for redevelopment. The acquisition of the property “was a feat that will protect Palm Cottage in perpetuity. We are tremendously grateful for all of those who have supported our endeavors, including many Naples Yacht Club members,” Reed says. “We profoundly appreciate all major gift donors who share this vision, especially Mary S. and Stephen B. Smith who led the effort with their $1 million match challenge.”
Other major donors for this initiative who are yacht club members include: Patrice “Treecie” Schoonmaker through the Schoonmaker Foundation; Lynne and Chip Shotwell; Sharon and Dolph von Arx; Vicky C. and David Byron Smith; Kathleen and former U.S. Representative Francis Rooney; and Tanya and Denny Glass. Many other yacht club members contributed, and NYC is buying an inscribed brick paver ($300) to support the project. The plan is to create 1,000-squarefeet of new exhibits in the new house—Smith Exhibit Hall—and an exterior pathway with the brick pavers featuring “stations” chronicling Naples’ history and the decades-old fruit trees gracing the property. “The yacht club purchased a brick because we support the Naples Historical Society—as the oldest private club, our appreciation of the town’s history and the need to keep it alive is aligned,” says NYC Executive Director of Membership Brenda O’Connor. Reed is thrilled that residents have come together to prevent the development of a dominating mansion on the adjacent property. “It is rare for a homeowner to buy an expensive parcel of land and not want to have their dream house built on it,” she says. “This project is a true community opportunity, a life-time legacy.” The project is expected to be completed by fall 2023.
Immokalee Foundation
A unique, 18-home subdivision rising in lmmokalee has the unexpected name of Career Pathways Learning Lab—which makes sense when you realize that it’s being developed to provide students with paid, onthe-job training to gain the valuable experience they need to enter the construction industry. They are learning about land development, home construction, marketing, and sales while working side-by-side with industry professionals. It is part of The Immokalee Foundation’s Career Pathways program, hence the subdivision’s name, focused specifically on engineering, construction, business management and entrepreneurship. Working with lmmokalee Technical College (iTECH), BCB Homes, and Collier Enterprises, The lmmokalee Foundation developed the high school curriculum and internships that can lead to four industry-recognized credentials. BCB Homes President Greg Brisson helped brainstorm the Career Pathways Learning Lab project with others from its inception and stepped up as the general contractor. “It turned into, ‘Oh, boy. We’re

going to build 18 houses’” which will take place over five years. “Hopefully, in that time, we’ll touch 500 students through The Immokalee Foundation and iTech and hopefully guide them into careers in the industry,” Brisson says. BCB Homes CEO Joe Smallwood is a Naples native and new NYC member who founded the construction company in 1993. Smallwood has worked with Brisson for 16 years, and gives Brisson all the credit for its involvement in the Career Pathways Learning Lab. To date, BCB Homes has donated more than $350,000 of in-kind contributions and has hired graduates of the program.
Says Smallwood: “The part that makes it special for us is the students. The development is taking shape but the rewarding part is the young people going through the course and getting the experience in the industry. We’re exposing young people to what we’re passionate about.”
Ukraine
Paul Fleming: On the Feeding Frontline When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Paul Fleming didn’t think twice about volunteering to travel more than 5,100 miles to help the Ukrainians refugees fleeing for their survival. Fleming is the successful restaurateur behind Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, Pei Wei Asian Diner, P.F. Chang’s, and Lake Park Diner. Naturally, he thought he could help on the feeding front with the massive evacuations of Ukrainians spilling into Poland, a border country. World Central Kitchen, founded by Nobel Peace Prize-nominated chef José Andrés who’s been featured on 60 Minutes and received a $100 million donation from Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, which the chef is funneling into World Central Kitchen. Fleming wasted no time and arrived in Przemyśl, Poland, during the third week of the invasion. World Central Kitchen hires displaced restaurant employees and chefs so they can earn a paycheck while feeding vulnerable populations—in the face of other natural disasters, too, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and famines. While Fleming went in thinking he could lend his professional expertise, he says, the organization didn’t need it. With staging that began before the war, a

warehouse filled with refrigerators and ovens could serve thousands of people per day and a pecking order had been established, with local chefs crafting large batches of paella, hearty soups, and stewed chicken. “He takes volunteers but he’s [Andrés] efficient because he pays local people. They show up on time and they work hard,” Fleming explains. For 10-hour days, Fleming pitched in by cleaning, hauling garbage, transporting provisions, delivering sandwiches at a train station, and giving candy to children during lulls in tasks. Before leaving the States, he had to secure his own rental car and hotel in a town 45 minutes from the feeding site. “It’s a war zone. They can’t be driving you around. You’re taking your own risk and driving on your own,” Fleming says, adding “every day, they sent me somewhere different.” Fleming was moved by the fact that only Ukrainian women and their children, and frail seniors, were crossing the border into Poland. “The husbands turned around and went back to fight,” he says. “I heard a woman say, ‘This war is going to go on forever. Our kids will go back to fight when they’re 16.’ These were the bravest human beings I’ve seen in my life. The will of these people to stay and fight was touching. It changed my life.”

Upon his return, he sent letters to leaders of Poland and Lithuania thanking them for their commitment to democracy and wrote an op-ed that ran in the Washington Times. Here are some excerpts: “I returned to the United States with the reassurance that our partners and allies’ commitment to defending freedom and defeating tyranny has only grown stronger. I am also returning from Europe with a challenge for our nation to lead the world in standing for human rights. “Following the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, the world pledged to ‘never again’ allow genocide to take the lives of innocent people. But today, Mr. Putin is choosing that path. Children are dying, families are dying precisely because they are Ukrainian and won’t do what the dictator Putin wants them to. This is genocide. ‘Never again’ was promised, but world leaders are failing.”

Water Warriors Meet local advocates who are devoted to protecting the region’s most precious liquid resource
W
ater quality and quantity are necessities we can’t afford to ignore. What’s being done to protect and restore this precious regional resource? Devoted advocates are seeking solutions.
Conscientious Captains
In 2016, enough was enough for Captains Daniel Andrews and Chris Wittman, longtime fishing guides. Both were weary of water management practices, especially large discharges from Lake Okeechobee, adversely impacting the estuaries that recreational and commercial fishermen depend on. From their frustrations and a desire to restore and protect water resources in Southwest Florida came Captains for Clean 12
Water, a nonprofit grassroots organization headquartered in Fort Myers. Andrews, a Lee County native, co-founder of the organization with Wittman, has long been aware of regional water quality concerns, but he describes 2013 as an especially disturbing year. “There was a major water crisis [in Lee County] due to massive discharges from Lake O, which produced huge seagrass die-offs,” relates Andrews. “I found ways to work around it … but seeing the aftermath, seeing all the estuaries and the death was pretty heartbreaking. By 2014, some of my favorite fishing areas were decimated, and it didn’t get any better in 2015.” Andrews explains there are various reasons Lake O discharges are harmful to downstream estuaries, but two are critical. First, massive

sales companies in the United Statespurchased this area, eventually selling about 170,000 square acres to some 40,000 buyers, promising a paradisiac city that, in reality, was flooded throughout the rainy season. Buyers often purchased sight unseen or after viewing the land from an airplane—during the dry season. To move water off the land and make home lots habitable, GALC constructed more than 150 miles of roads and 800 miles of canals. The dream of the subdivision never materialized, and what was left behind was a hydrologic disaster. “Roads are dams; they inherently alter the hydrology. Having canals and draining of the wetlands [also] alters the hydrology. It changes the landscape, and it changes how wildlife uses the land,” says Meredith

amounts of freshwater flowing into the estuaries dramatically drops the salinity of the water. The second problem is the high turbidity that Lake O flows create. Brown, cloudy water forms a barrier impeding sunlight penetration, denying seagrasses the ability to photosynthesize. No sugar for plants is a death sentence. And, as with most things ecological, there’s a trickle-down effect because seagrasses sustain incredible amounts of sea life—and sequester large amounts of carbon. Lake O discharges impact Collier County, too. “The amount of nutrients in Lake O discharges exacerbates red tide,” Andrews relates. “There’s an impact that’s felt in Collier County because of southward water currents.” Longtime Naples resident Ellin Goetz, who serves as vice chair for The Everglades Foundation’s board of directors and president at Goetz+Stropes Landscape Architects, agrees: “The red tide issue affects the entire county, and I would argue is directly related to waterflows coming out of the Caloosahatchee [from Lake O]. … Too much pollution is coming from there, and we need to get that right.” Captains for Clean Water focuses on governmental policy, education, and creating awareness “so that they have a better understanding of how the estuaries relate to them and the economy,” says Andrews. “When an important policy matter comes up, we have no choice. There are decisions that are made at the local, state, and federal levels that affect our water.”
Restoring the Picayune Strand
Constructed on a promise of becoming the largest subdivision in the nation, Southern Golden Gate Estates has had a complicated history. The land was initially logged for cypress trees in the 1940s and 1950s. Soon after, Gulf American Land Corporation (GALC) - one of the largest land Waypoints 2022-2023 | NAPLES YACHT CLUB

Budd, regional policy director for the Florida Wildlife Federation. The first step in remedying the problems involved land reacquisition from thousands of landowners. Funds from a state conservation program provided initial support, and in 1998, the federal government allocated $25 million to the state to secure remaining parcels. Today, this reclaimed area is known as Picayune Strand State Forest. The Picayune Strand Restoration Project, now nearly complete, seeks to restore this area’s natural hydrology, including improved waterflow to Collier Seminole State Park, Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, and Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Removing crumbling roads, plugging canals, and building pump stations that restore the natural flow of water are essential to the project. “Last year, I had the honor of turning on the Faka Union Pump Station, and I’m excited tell you that we’re actually getting there,” says Charlette Roman, South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) governing board member and retired U.S. Army colonel. A Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan project, the restoration of Picayune Strand has been championed by several stakeholder groups and government agencies, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and SFWMD, a regional governmental organization that manages water resources from Orlando to the Keys. “We’re seeing a tremendous positive ecological response already, and we haven’t completed all of it yet,” explains Roman, who estimates it will be completed in 2023.
Keeping it Real
Across Florida, there are 14 localized groups that form Waterkeepers Florida, a nonprofit that works to protect and restore water resources for more than 45,000 square miles of watershed. Collier County Waterkeeper, a nonprofit affiliated with Waterkeepers Florida, is directed by Waterkeeper K.C. Schulberg.
14
“Water quality is degrading; it’s not improving … we’ve got to start fixing this. There’s a lot of people doing wonderful work, but the headwinds are tough,” Schulberg says. “Climate change and so many people coming to Florida stress the environment and our infrastructure.” A neighbor to the north, Calusa Waterkeeper John Cassani echoes Schulberg regarding development’s effects on water quality: “Since 2018, Lee and Collier counties have the first- and third-highest rates of population increase respectively and the highest rates of increase in water quality impairment among the nine-county region of Southwest Florida. Additionally, Lee and Collier counties lead the state in applications that impact wetlands.” The solutions are not simple, fast, or easy. However, to help address water-related problems, Collier County Waterkeeper is focusing on five main issues: Climate change, resulting in sea-level rise, saltwater intrusion, flooding, storm surge, and storm intensification, and other identified impacts ● Wetland preservation and restoration, including responsible growth management practices ● Harmful algal blooms (HABs), such as toxic blue-green algae and red tide ● Stormwater runoff, which is amplified by the increasing development of impervious surfaces (such as parking lots and roads, which shunt polluted runoff into local waterbodies) ● Preserving coral reefs ●
Many of the area’s water woes stem from high nutrient loads, particularly nitrates, phosphates, and carbon. Too many nutrients cause environmental imbalances and fuel habitat-destroying blue-green algae and naturally occurring red tide. The source of these excess nutrient loads is complex. Fertilizer runoff from Lake O discharges play a factor due to southward-flowing waters in the gulf. Other contributors include

Foundation. Eighty additional Collier County teachers are being trained on the Everglades curriculum and a recent Collier Community Foundation grant will enable the expansion of STEM [science, technology, engineering, and math] programs in Collier County, Vangellow says. Interdisciplinary and age-appropriate, the lessons are customizable to classrooms. There are three lessons per grade level, organized around eminent Everglades-related themes ranging from wildlife to watersheds to human impacts. “Water is the lifeblood of the Everglades,” notes Vangellow. “We teach that to students at a young age and try to get them to imagine that it’s like the blood in their bodies; anything [they] can do protect that resource is important.”

runoff contaminated with pollutants from lawns, roadways, septic systems, and other urban sources. “As the rainy season starts, what happens is a toilet flush,” explains Schulberg. “With those first rains, we’ll see a spike of nutrients coming into the water, and since our ground is basically sand, water [moves] more effectively into the watershed than other places in the country.”
[Article by Jane Enos/Reprinted with permission from Naples Illustrated]
There are no easy fixes to control these nutrient loads, but there are ways to help, even on an individual level. Schulberg recommends 10- to 15-foot setbacks for those with waterfront properties. Landscaping with Florida-friendly plants that don’t require fertilizer or avoiding fertilizer altogether—especially during the wet season—is environmentally beneficial, too. According to Schulberg, “It’s all about reducing nutrients at their source.”
“MOST OF WHAT WE DO IS EDUCATION AND OUTREACH … WORKING WITH PEOPLE SO THAT THEY HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THE ESTUARIES RELATE TO THEM AND THE ECONOMY.” —DANIEL ANDREWS
Founded in 1993, The Everglades Foundation is a prominent nonprofit organization providing bipartisan solutions aimed at protecting and restoring the Everglades, which provides the daily drinking water supply for some nine million people and billions of dollars to Florida’s economy. The foundation harnesses science-driven research and advocacy to effect positive change. However, problems can’t be solved if they go unacknowledged or misunderstood. Residents, visitors, newcomers, and rising generations need to understand the importance of the Everglades, says Goetz, vice chair of The Everglades Foundation’s board of directors. “Constant outreach and engagement are key.” The Everglades Foundation has developed a sophisticated literacy program, including Everglades literacy teacher trainings; free lessons and materials for teachers who attend designated educational trainings; and a free, online K-12 teacher toolkit containing 36 comprehensive Everglades lesson plans that align with Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. The goal is to teach the next generation of leaders and inspire future environmental stewards. “We train 312 teachers across 52 schools in Collier County,” says Tate Vangellow, literacy program coordinator for The Everglades

lthough the gentlemen are occasionally invited to join in on special ladies’ programming, there’s no lack of events, activities, and games that are exclusive to female NYC members. Each year, the opportunities for ladies to enjoy the club and each other’s company grows—and the community of women grows stronger! All NYC ladies are welcome to the women’s-only “clubs within the club,” Women on Water (WOW), and Ladies Book Club. And by the way: You don’t have to “join” these groups to enjoy the programs. Simply register for the events on the NYC website. Also, newcomers are always welcome to join play for bridge (men, too!) or mahjong. Beginner or expert, all levels are welcome for these favorite pastimes.

Women on Water (WOW)
Each season, WOW hosts several educational seminars and exciting events to help the NYC ladies get out on the water and enjoy Naples’ natural amenities. Adventures, tours, and educational and artistic experiences in the clubhouse are thoughtfully crafted each season. This year, WOW Chair Toni Mueller has planned an exciting lineup of adventures, with some new excursions and other repeats to refresh your boating skills. Keep an eye on NYC emails for more information on Yacht Etiquette Class, an electric boat ride at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, kayaking excursions, a rookery tour, Yacht Cooking Class, and many more WOW events.
Bridge
At Naples Yacht Club, bridge has been a popular “club within the club” for more than 25 years! Our members participate in duplicate bridge, in which players at a table are dealt hands that are subsequently passed on to another table, and then to another one, and so on. The main goal of bridge is accumulating points to eventually achieve Life Master status. Players at NYC track their points as part of the American Contract Bridge League. Both ladies and gentlemen are welcome to play bridge at NYC. The group meets each Tuesday for weekly play. Several players enjoy lunch beforehand in the Boaters’ Grille. The group also meets on the first and third Sunday of each month

for a game of bridge followed by a delicious dinner. The bridge players encourage anyone interested to join in the fun and give bridge a try. The bridge schedule is updated on the NYC website and shared in emails throughout the season.
Mahjong
Mahjong is a tile-based game that has been played in Asia for more than 300 years and has gained in global popularity. Although the game is hard to master, it’s fairly easy to learn the basics. Like the Western card game rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and luck. A single mahjong game is governed more by luck than skill. Mahjong is played at NYC every Monday and Thursday during season following an optional lunch. Mahjong is not played with a partner, so you never feel like you must meet someone else’s expectations. New players of any skill level are always welcome. Lessons are available at the club. Local instructors are available in the community, or you can learn and play online. Mahjong play continues into the summer for year-round members.

We support you. Here’s my hand if you need it.’” As the Immediate Past Commodore, James R. Lozelle (2019-2020) serves as chairman of the fund. He says NYC is “one of the few private clubs in the state” to provide scholarships for their employees and their families for college or vocational school. The Blue Gavel Scholarship has expanded to Collier County nine public high schools, too. “We are one of the premier clubs in the country doing this type of activity,” Lozelle says. The Blue Gavel Scholarship Fund is a 501(c)(3) so members’ donations are tax-deductible. The fund overseers meet twice a year to review applications and approve recipients and their award amounts, Lozelle says. The group reviews students’ performance to ensure they are meeting scholarship requirements and track expenditures of the scholarship money, which goes directly to the higher education institution. The fund gives out about $100,000 each year and has evolved since its establishment in 1997 by raising the award the amounts to keep up with escalating school costs and expanding its outreach. The idea to start the fund was suggested by Past Commodore G. Burtt Holmes (1993) based on a similar program at Sankaty Head Golf Club in Nantucket. “It’s a terrific program. It has been very well received by the employees and their families and highly utilized,” says Lozelle. “If we end up losing somebody as a result of them completing their studies, that’s fine. If they want to improve their lives, and utilize this and get a college degree, that’s terrific.”
About the Blue Gavel Scholarship Fund The Blue Gavel Scholarship is for employees and their children or grandchildren, in addition to graduates from Collier County’s nine public high schools. Each high school receives $5,000 to award a graduating student. Other award amounts are based upon the total cost of the specific program and need. The Blue Gavel Scholarship Fund also commits $10,000 annually for first-generation students attending Florida Gulf Coast University; it is matched through a state matching fund program, bringing the total award value to $10,000.

D
Locker Holder Privileges
uring the past two years, the Naples Yacht Club wine program has taken flight with educational wine tastings and enchanting wine dinners that welcome vintners and renowned sommeliers from around the world. There are many levels that provide members an opportunity to maximize their enjoyment of wine at the club— from stocking a wine locker with your personal collection to experiencing curated by-the-glass selections to accompany your dining experience. There is always something new to uncork at NYC.
• The opportunity to obtain value-added wines • No corkage fee on wine purchased for their locker • Reduced corkage fee on outside wine • Advanced notice on wine specials • Early notice and first opportunity to register for wine events
Wine Club
The NYC Wine Club was established in 2021 to further our exclusive wine offerings to members on a broader scale. Wine Club is limited to 100 members who have a heightened interest in wine programs, including tastings and dinners to which they gain early access. Wine Club offerings evolve each year.
Wine Dinners & Tastings
Wine dinners and tastings bring some of the best representatives in the wine industry—including winemakers, vintners, master sommeliers, and well-respected individuals in the wine community—to share their knowledge and passion with Naples Yacht Club members.

Wine Lockers
Wine lockers are the perfect way to curate your own collection of fine wines to enjoy while dining at the club. Each locker holds 12 bottles of wine. Naples Yacht Club’s wine lockers are limited to 45 holders and are currently on a waitlist status. Locker holders are notified once per year to affirm their renewal. Upon a locker becoming available, a lottery is held to allow other members to fill available lockers.

Cocktails with a Twist NYC mixologists concoct refreshing, innovative libations for members. The new Boaters’ Grille Bar cocktail menu features a variety of beverages that are perfect for accompanying a meal in the Boaters’ Grille or for relaxing after a boat ride or walk downtown. Here’s a sampling of signature club cocktails.
Maritime Cosmo Tangy and Chic Almost too pretty to drink, the Maritime Cosmo is handshaken with Absolute Citron vodka, Cointreau, cranberry, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup that combine to create a sunset-pink drink that’s as delectable as it looks.
Second in Command Fragrant and Enchanting
A bartender favorite, the Second in Command is a showstopper. The flavors of gin, St.-Germain elderflower liqueur, fresh lemon, and lavender will fill your senses as you sip this deliciously enchanting succor.
Sunkissed Mojito Bright and Cool The Sunkissed Mojito is the ideal cocktail to enjoy on the South Lawn as the sun sets to the west. Our house-made orange rum is the perfect partner for lime, mint, and a splash of club soda for a refreshing classic.
This is only the tip of the crushed ice—there are many more craft cocktails to try. Stop in and take a sip the next time you are in the Boaters’ Grille or let the NYC bartenders mix up a custom order that fits your tastes.
The Mangrove King Smooth and Exotic
Named after NYC’s first clubhouse, this rum-based drink features tropical flavors with both white and dark rum, Chambord liqueur, pineapple, and lime.

NYC Car Club Revvin’ it up In 2018, a small group of members with an interest in cars thought it would be fun to arrange activities to bring together members with similar interests. It led to visits to local car collections, driving trips to regional points of interest, discussion meetings, visits to car events and, of course, our very own car show at the club.

This season, NYC Car Club activities will be restarted. A car show is planned for spring as well as other activities, depending on the level of member interest. The NYC Car Club is looking for more members to join now that things are getting back to normal. It is a very informal group. You do not need to be a collector or own cars to participate. All you need is an interest in things automotive, making friends, and having fun with your fellow members. All NYC members are welcome to participate. If you are interested in joining the group, contact the club or call Don Wingard. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sailing (Catalina Racing)
TYPES OF CRUISES
Seasonal competition During the winter, NYC’s fleet of Catalina sailboats takes to Naples Bay for an annual race. Held every Monday following the Boaters’ Lunch, 12 to 14 members typically sail out for some serious—but friendly—competition. There is always room for more (ladies, too!) to join the fun.
Lunch Cruises: Spend a morning on the
Fishing Drop a line The club’s fishing enthusiasts who come together will find several opportunities throughout the season to take guided fishing trips with fellow members. Past destinations have been as close as Pine Island Sound and as far as Ninilchik, Alaska.
Cruising
Bocce is a great way to socialize and to meet club members. Games can be played as singles or couples. One reason this ancient game of skill and strategy has been passed through the ages is due to its simplicity. All you need is a court to play on, something to sip and nibble, and, yes, a bocce ball. Bocce is not just a great game to play with friends, it is a tradition—one that will continue to thrive at Naples Yacht Club.
Cruise Lite: Take time for a quick jaunt to a nearby club or marina. Cruise Lites offer a onenight stay at your destination, often accompanied by a group dinner and daytime group activities. Overnight Cruises: Pack your bags for a short get-away to a fun, regional destination, such as Boca Grande, St. Petersburg, or Ocean Reef. Trips include time to relax, explore landmarks or attractions, dine, and shop.
Bocce A timeless tradition Bocce is more popular than ever in Southwest Florida, with many clubs and communities offering league and social play. The beauty of bocce is that anyone can play, no matter their athletic skill level, gender, or age.
water, followed by lunch at a local yacht club or restaurant with slip availability. Lunch Cruises are the perfect opportunity to join by land and drive to the destination instead of cruising by boat.
By land or sea Club cruises are an integral part of NYC’s social life. Cruise Leaders put together an extensive itinerary of activities, excursions, and dining events at each destination. Don’t own a boat? Cruisers often host members on their vessels, and many local destinations can be reached overland. Sign-up is easy. Visit the Naples Yacht Club website, log in and click on the “Cruising” tab. This is the main hub of information for cruisers where you will sign up, view itineraries, and make meal and activity selections—all in one convenient location. See page XX for the Cruising Calendar for more details on this season’s ports of call.
International Cruises: Each year, Preferred Travel of Naples coordinates a special international cruise package for Naples Yacht Club members. The October 2022 cruise sold out quickly, and spaces are filling for the 2023 Japan cruise. If you are interested in learning more about the trip or securing a reservation, please contact Karen Kelly at Preferred Travel of Naples at (239) 261-1177.

he Ladies’ Book Club is a special time for NYC ladies to gather in an informal setting and enjoy the company of fellow booklovers. Lessons in Chemistry By Bonnie Garmus This 2022 debut novel—an instant New York Times bestseller—tells the story of a female scientist in 1960s California who becomes the unlikely star of America’s most popular TV cooking show. Elizabeth Zott falls in love with a colleague, later becoming a single mother and the revolutionary host of Supper at Six who teaches her female audiences how to change the status quo.
Their Eyes Were Watching God By Zora Neale Hurston This enduring work by the renowned AfricanAmerican Florida author is a Southern love story that follows the fortunes of Janie Crawford, a woman living in the black town of Eaton, Florida. While Zora Neale Hurston was the preeminent black female writer during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s, Their Eyes Were Watching God (published in 1937) became a controversial outcast because it wasn’t written explicitly about black people in the context of a white world, as her contemporaries were doing. It fell into oblivion until writer Alice Walker revived interest in the work in 1975 and it was reissued in 1978; it has since been called “one of the most important and enduring books of the twentieth century.”
January 20, 2023 Among the Beautiful Beasts By Lori McMullen Another first-time novel, Among the Beautiful Beasts explores the early life of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the Miami journalist who became a tireless activist for the Florida Everglades, which she christened the “River of Grass” through her own book of that name. Author Lori McMullen grew up in Dade County understanding the immense impact Douglas had in the conservation movement. Her novel—told in suspenseful chapters that alternate between the wilds of the wetlands and narrative flashbacks—delves into Douglas’ formative years: her familial relationships, early marriage to a swindler 30 years her senior, move to Miami, and the passions she embraced along the way.
March 17, 2023 The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn This novel is based on the true story of a quiet bookworm who becomes history’s deadliest female sniper in World War II. Mila Pavlichenko, a studious librarian and single mother, is given a rifle to join the fight against the Nazis in 1937 in Ukraine and Russia. A lethal Nazi hunter known as Lady Death, she becomes a national heroine and visits America on a goodwill tour, becoming unexpected friends with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and facing an enemy from her past.

December 6, 2022 Buried at the Lake: A Luca Mystery By Dan Petrosini The latest in the Luca Mystery Series by Naples author Dan Petrosini is focused on the mysterious death of an innocent woman at a lakefront property 10 years prior. What was the motive? Mistaken identity? Or something sinister? This fourteenth book in the series— set in Collier County—alternates narration between Detective Frank Luca and a possible person of interest in the homicide. Petrosini is a USA Today bestselling author.
January 3, 2023 Butcher’s Crossing By John Williams In this 1960 classic set in the 1870s, Harvard student Will Andrews—inspired by Ralph Wado Emerson’s call to return to nature—drops out of school and heads West. After landing in the small Kansas town of Butcher’s Crossing, he joins a fellow pioneer to track herds of buffalo in the Colorado Rockies, where he confronts nature’s brutal realities in a struggle to survive. A film based on the novel currently under production will star Nicholas Cage.

March 7, 2023 1984 By George Orwell This cautionary tale is set in a dystopian London in the totalitarian state of Oceania where Big Brother watches you and the Thought Police can practically read your mind. The novel remains as potent today as it was following its publication in 1949. The New Yorker has said of this PBS Great American Read Top 100 Pick: “Orwell saw, to his credit, that the act of falsifying reality is only secondarily a way of changing perceptions. It is, above all, a way of asserting power.”
April 4, 2023 Ready Player One By Ernest Cline This No. 1 New York Times bestseller is also set in the future—the year 2045. Most of humanity spends their days in a virtual world called OASIS trying to solve fiendish puzzles, based on its creator’s obsession with decades of pop culture. HuffPost calls it “the grown-up’s Harry Potter” while CNN says it’s “an addictive read . . . part intergalactic scavenger hunt, part romance, and all heart.” Steven Spielberg transformed it into a 2018 film.
Countdown 1945: The Extraordinary Story of the Atomic Bomb and the 116 Days That Changed the World By Chris Wallace In Countdown 1945, the veteran journalist and anchor of Fox News Sunday takes readers behind the scenes of the 116 days leading up to the American attack on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The No. 1 national bestseller has been called “the definitive account of one of the most significant moments in history.”

‘Tween Waters Overnight Cruise
October 12-14, 2021
T
his group was small but mighty for the first overnight cruise of the 2021-2022 season! When we returned to the ‘Tween Waters Resort Island Resort & Spa on Captiva Island, we enjoyed many of the property’s renovations, as well as what have come to be normal cruising activities. A trip to Captiva wouldn’t be complete without dining at the Green Flash. So, of course, we all got together to do just that after enjoying some homemade appetizers and cocktails at the marina. What would a cruise be without bocce? This season, we took it to the beach. Special bocce sets allowed for us to play in the sand and enjoy the sparkling beaches. After we presented the bocce awards, we enjoyed dinner at the Old Captiva House and got some rest before making our way back home to Naples. We would always recommend this quaint cruise to new cruisers or land-cruisers. It is usually a small group that is always packed with camaraderie. --John and Susan Howell

It was on fire and our charter ended up landing us the “Big Fish Award” at the annual Rendezvous Dinner back at the club later in the season. 7 Our special guest, Clay Risen, joined us all the way from New York City and taught us all about bourbon. There was no need to be a connoisseur of the spirit to enjoy his knowledge. The finale of the cruise was a cocktail party at the elegant Gasparilla Inn Beach Club. This cruise was fun to plan and even more fun to enjoy with our friends. --John and Debbie Tisdel

South Seas Overnight Cruise

T
he South Seas Overnight Cruise enjoyed another recordbreaking attendance! Sixty-four members and 18 boats arrived at Captiva Island on smooth seas for a great cruise. When the wind started to pick up, we took our Welcome Luau Dinner indoors. Live entertainment and leis welcomed us for our first evening on the cruise. The next day, we took to the courts for one of the biggest bocce tournaments we had ever seen. With some hard work and determination, we won! I still can’t believe our luck. Later that evening, we all boarded the Lady Chadwick for a cocktail cruise around the island. Playful dolphins and a pictureperfect sunset created a beautiful finale for the cruise before we departed the next day. We are already looking forward to what this season’s Cruise Leaders have in store for the South Seas cruise! -- John and Carolyn Moisson

hey came by land, they came by sea, and they came by air to gather for the 2022 Key West Overnight Cruise. Ninetysix NYC members, 25 motor vessels, and one sailboat met on April 26 at Pirate’s Cove Restaurant for docktails at Key West. Patriotism was the theme as cruisers toured and dined at Truman’s Little White House and the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Ingham. We learned about, and shared, patriotic stories of what makes America great. Sixty of our cruisers enjoyed a very special visit to the U.S. Army Special Forces Underwater Operations School on Fleming Key. The base commander provided an orientation that included the facility’s history, mission, training, and more. Instructors provided an overview of some of the equipment and training techniques. Everyone was impressed and expressed pride in this important component of our military defense. Some flew home, while others drove. Boaters enjoyed a calm, following-sea back to Naples. --Rusty and Libby McKee

There is a dog’s paw. There is a whale. There is even a flamingo. The Boaters’ Grille burgee wall displays more than 90 Naples Yacht Club members’ custom-designed burgees. Want to join in and create your own burgee? The creative possibilities are endless, whether you go with a simple monogram or choose to declare your love for a particular breed of dog or hobby. Here are a few steps to get you started: • Identify an image, symbol, or design element that represents you. • Decide the shape of the flag that you prefer: pennant, swallow-tail, tapered, or rectangular. • Choose a simple color palette. Most burgees have four colors or fewer. Once you have a design in mind—or if you need help getting started—contact Dave Hearn of Signarama at (239) 330-3737. He has created burgees for many NYC members!

nterest in membership continues to be strong. So many of our wonderful members have inquired as to how they can help friends or family join NYC, which speaks volumes about how special this club is. On that note, we have a waitlist! A waitlist is a positive sign because it indicates vibrancy and a satisfied membership, as well as the fact that clubs with a waitlist are in a great financial position. Because NYC maintains a waitlist, it demonstrates that we are dedicated to our wonderful members, as our board has determined a maximum capacity to ensure accessibility and enjoyment of our dining, cruising, and social activities. Your terrific Admissions Committee is working hard. With that in mind, thank you for your patience as we work with you to bring your like-minded friends into the NYC fold in as timely a manner as possible! We truly appreciate this year’s sponsors of our new members, who are introduced here.

id you know that the distinctive weather vane atop the Dockmaster’s Office is a custom piece inspired by the bygone days of coastal transportation in old Florida? The design of the unique architectural element was inspired by the schooner Ina, which was operated by Capt. Thomas Annadown between Tampa and Key West from 1917 to the mid-1930s (when he ferried coconuts for the tourist trade). In those days, people and goods were transported by boat throughout Florida until railroad and reliable road systems were constructed. Naples artist Paul Arsenault incorporated a vignette of Ina tied to a gas dock in the 72-foot mural he

created for the clubhouse. He had discovered Ina and met its owner while working on a plein-air watercolor of it in Tarpon Springs in 1975. The stories behind the vessel’s life were “incredible,” says Arsenault, “and it was the prettiest boat in the harbor.” Arsenault relayed these stories to Past Commodore Philip M. Francoeur Jr. while he was serving as vice commodore and heavily involved in the expansion of the clubhouse and other building projects. Francoeur suggested the Ina weather vane after the City of Naples dictated that new construction had to incorporate public art. It was fabricated by an artist in Maine and installed on the Dockmaster’s Office in 2008.
