AULA 01: NUMERALS

ORDINAIS

No entanto, tome cuidado pois alguns números mudam a grafia: Exemplos twenty – twelfth nine – ninth

Seguem algumas dicas para a formação:

veja a tabela abaixo:

* As dezenas são sempre terminadas em ty: Exemplos: 20 - twenty, 30 - thirty, 40 - forty, 50 - fifty, etc.

* As centenas são escritas da forma "uma centena" e não "cem", como no português, acrescentando hundred: Exemplos: 100 - One hundred, 200 - Two hundred, etc.

* Para a formação dos milhares, segue-se a regra da dezena, apenas trocando "hundred" por "thousand": Exemplos: 1000 = One thousand, 2000 = Two thousand, etc * Os milhões funcionam da mesma maneira, só trocando por "million": Exemplos: 1,000,000 = One million, 2,000,000 = two million, etc Notas: 1.Diferentemente da língua portuguesa, o divisor de milhar é uma vírgula (,) e não o ponto. Exemplos: 1,730,014 - One million seven hundred thirty thousand and fourteen 2.Para hundred, thousand e million, billion use sempreaouoneantes. Exemplos: 100 - a hundred / one hundred 1,000 - a thousand / one Thousand 201,000 - two hundred and one Thousand 3.Separação do cardinal entre a centena e dezena: São geralmente separados pela preposiçãoand, mas esta regra não é necessariamente seguida no inglês americano. Exemplos: 110 - one hundred and ten 1,250 - one thousand, two hundred and fifty 2,001 - two thousand and one 4. São escritos Exemplos: two hundred Euros several thousand light years

sempre

no

singular.

AULA 02: TEXT COMPREHENSION TEXT 1 Every generation thinks the weather isn't what it used to be. Maybe the climate is really changing. The last seasons have brought a winter or a summer that belongs to the record books. There has been record snow in Japan, record heat in Argentina, record cold in Scotland. For some, the weather is pure joy, providing a midwinter sunbath or a once-in-a-lifetime glimpse of snow. For others, the extremes of global climate are annoying, expensive or tragic. A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that weird weather is a result of global warming, itself a consequence of air pollution. If so, global warming has a lot to answer for disasters like the drought that has parched northeastern Brazil and the rain now lashing the south of the same country. (Newsweek, January 22, 1996.) 01. TEXT 3 We humans have probed the heart of the atom, unraveled the mysteries of DNA, glimpsed the edges of space and time. Yet when it comes to understanding life's place in the universe, we are mere children, standing on a beach, staring uncomprehendingly at a vast, inscrutable ocean. Our predicament is not that we know nothing about life; it is rather that nothing we know can be compared with anything anywhere else. All the creatures of the earth — from worms to whales — are fundamentally cousins, linked by the same biochemistry, sharing the same planetary home. But is the earth's biosphere the only one there is? So far none of the other planets or moons in our solar system has been shown to harbor life. However given the vastness of the universe, the possibilities are endless.

(John is a very good Singer. Mary also sings very well.). (Kate is 92 years old. Cathy is 92 years too. They too old to get married). You will find two English books in my bedroom. You can take either of them). (neither of them was intelligent). • EITHER ... OR ... significa ―OU... (Either Phill or Paul studied in Germany). • NEITHER ... NOR ... significa ―NEM ... (Neither Phill nor Paul studied in Germany)

Identify the statements which represent Henry‘s reaction to his friend‘s words:

Read Text I and answer questions 01 to 05, according to it. TEXT I Young people are influenced by what they see around them – family, friends, and neighbors – as well as on television or in movies. While they may think they know what career they want to pursue when they grow up, much of what they know comes from misconceptions of what they see or is influenced by what their parents or relatives do. That is why experts suggest that children need to become aware of themselves and the world around them in order to fully understand and digest information about their individual interests and what exists beyond just their immediate world. This means working with young people to explore their likes and dislikes, expand their understanding of the world at large, and enhance their knowledge of how business works. This can be accomplished through discussions, question and answer exercises, reading, research, interaction with the business community and any method that allows a young student to discover new ideas. The whole idea is to provide young people with the broadest opportunity to learn and grow: whether that means reading about technology and science or poetry and art, or whether that means visiting businesses or having business leaders come to campus. The only way to gain the full measure of what is ahead of them and the career options that are available is to build good learning habits when they are young. That is the best way to prepare the youth of today for the jobs of tomorrow.

I. He looks nervous. II. He sounds competitive. III. He becomes upset. IV. He seems miserable. V. He gets concerned 07. Consider the cartoon and choose the correct statements: I. Henry is as interested as his friend in the jobs of tomorrow. II. Henry is more interested in using the computer than his friend. III. Henry‘s friend is less interested in developing his instincts. IV. Henry is far more interested in eating as much food as possible. V. Henry‘s friend is most interested in enhancing his knowledge

The word angel appears nearly 300 times in the Bible, from the Cherubim who guards Eden to the angel who attests to the Apocalypse. Brazilian cinema had to wait until the late ‗60s for women to begin to gain their own space. The first short film by Ana Carolina dates from 1968. Tizuka Yamasaki would make her name with ―Gaijin‖(1979), by exploring the problems of Japanese immigrants in Brazil, but her fame would be consolidated with a movie on feminism, ―Parahyba Mulher Macho‖, exhibited in 1982. After a period of stagnation in the early ‗90s, Brazilian cinema has been reinvigorated by the portrait of a woman: ―Carlota Joaquina‖ (1994), the feature – length debut of director –actress Carla Camurati, who composed a penetrating satire of the legendary wife of D. AULA 05 : INTERPRETAÇÃO TEXTUAL TEXT 2 TEXT 1 If artificial intelligence says that the mind is a kind of machine, then the mind of the artists is a machine that produces art. The computer is fast becoming the theater, the canvas, the page, the brush, the pen, the piano, the instrument of all art forms. Art is being sent to cyberia. Digitization, say technicians, is democratization. Computer programs like AARON will enable the eletronic Everyman to produce works of visual art.

The problems in our fast-changing world require a new paradigm of social policy, transcending all ―identity politics‖ ¾ women, blacks, gays, the disabled. Pursuing the separate interests of women isn‘t adequate. Instead, there has to be some new vision of community. We need to campaign ¾ men and women, whites and blacks ¾ for a shorter workweek, a higher minimum wage, an end to the war against social-welfare programs. ―Women‘s issues‖ are symptoms of problems that affect everyone.

The Mexican crisis has been shaking the foreign investors‘ reliance on emerging markets, especially the Latin American. Brazilian answer to the new international situation brought up by the Mexican crisis is already being established by the Economic Team. Frightened, these economists have chosen the recessive adjustment. In fact, recession is an old phenomenon of the Brazilian economy. The problem is that Brazilian history shows that recession causes inflation. In addition to this, it may also lead the country into a superinflation, like the one that was present in the last year of the past decade.

If a travel companion seems to have stopped breathing because of a heart attack, a stroke, or drowning, act immediately. First of all, lay the patient on a hard level surface and ask somebody to call for professional medical help. Then, kneel beside the patient and blow twice into the patient‘s mouth. Finally, check the side of the patient‘s neck for a pulse. If there is none, begin administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a simple combination of chest compression and mouth-to-mouth breathing. (Adapted from TRAVEL, February, 1995)

Poems for the People - Poems by the People We all build up a fantasy of what the perfect person should be. As time goes on we realize that we live in a fantasy. Some are luckier than others to at least get a glimpse of their fantasy. I've been fortunate to get that glimpse. Fantasy by Virgo All my life I had built up a fantasy of the perfect man. Countless romance stories and fables helped make that fantasy a reality in my mind. Searching for that fantasy leads to many disappointments. Reality made it clear that there was no such man. And as the years went by, the fantasy started to fade away - until I met you. I had almost given up on the fantasy until my fantasy became reality, that reality became you.

Visitor Comments It is so true, In my point of view too!

Patrick I loved this poem. It tells that we all have a fantasy waiting to come true.

sweetness This is such a good poem! It deeply touched me.

Bernie I love this poem. It explains exactly how I feel about my husband. I thought I would never find that special him, until He found Me.

Maria oh how I wish I could say the same. but I will remember this poem, that's for sure.

Lena
