welcome from the station president
On behalf of the Board of Directors, welcome to the 60th annual sale at the Manitoba Bull Test Station. Another year has passed so quickly it seems, and here we are publishing a very special 2024 sale catalogue. The Station, in its 6oth year of operations remains as Canada’s oldest facility of its kind.
There have been numerous individuals involved with the Station over the years, managers, administrators, consignors, volunteers, auctioneers and many, many more. It is so interesting to think and wonder how much time, thought and energy was devoted and invested by the original group of men and their families to actually get the Station on its feet, winter the stock and have the very first sale six decades ago. To that group of original founders we know you are looking at us from above perhaps with a smile along with a sense of gratitude that your visions and your dreams are still happening so many years later in 2024. Folks, the Station is the only place in these parts where you will find a multi breed group of bulls and heifers that are managed, fed, performance tested and evaluated unlike any other. This year’s offering come from many of the top herds in the land from Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Quebec. Congratulations to all consignors for bringing such a tremendous group of cattle to the Station this winter! Buyers, your next herd sire or foundation female is right here in one of our pens, buy with confidence.
We hope that you are able to walks the pens prior to the sale, reach out directly to the consignors or contact our Manager, Cam Wood (204-8566568) for information about the consignments.
Since 1964, the Manitoba Bull Test Station remains a long- standing tradition and will continue to be this provinces mainstay where the buyer and seller meet.
Welcome to the Manitoba Bull Test Stations 60th anniversary sale!
What a year to be in the cattle business! With all classes of cattle at record prices and looking to stay there, the future looks bright in the beef industry.
When Tracy & I had the opportunity to make the move to the Station we did so with great excitement. The Station has been one of Manitoba’s signature sales for the past 60 years, evolving, as has the beef industry itself and we are proud of the set of bulls and females that have been developed this season. We have consignors that offer us decades of experience in the industry as well as young producers who are bringing new, innovative ideas to the table. Our consignors are truly a great bunch to work with. I can speak for both Tracy & I as I say thank you to the board and consignors for welcoming us to the team and making the transition as smooth as possible.
Our 60th annual sale has welcomed consignments from breeders across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec. Representing 6 different breeds, our offering consists of bulls and open females developed on our regular 112 day test and one 2 year old bull who came out of our young bull development program. New for 2024 is a group of open heifers who have been developed on a limit fed grain ration. Our goal with this program was threefold; achieve gains of 2lbs/day, reduce feed costs for consignors and develop heifers in a more commercial setting. We are pleased with the results of this trial and hope to expand this program next season.
Visitors are always welcome to tour the pens at the Station and I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the cattle on offer this year or about joining us as a consignor for our 61st test season.
See you Sale Day!

BULLS Yearling
MASS Leo 12L
A good Jagger Bull here with a smaller frame. The best quality of the Jagger calves is that they are up and nursing soon after birth and have tons of energy. He had an Oct 5th wt of 830lbs and Jan 20th wt of 1180lbs. His dam is a solid dark red Southam Western Force cow. Emily Murray from High Bluff bought her heifer calf last year.
MASS Larry 5L
I really like this Affinity Bull. He was our thickest calf all summer. He had an Oct 5th w.wt of 895lbs and Jan 20th wt 1325lbs. His dam is a Red Summit Bert’s NR Tank of a cow. She has another Affinity Bull calf by her side this year.
108
MASS Logan 4L
A True North bull with the money stripe. He’s also one of Cam’s favorites. He had a birth weight of 85lbs, Oct 5th w.wt of 870lbs, and a Jan 20th wt of 1245lbs. His dam is a quiet easy keeping black cow from Pure Country Simmentals. Her True North Bull calf last year sold to Leonard Mitchler form Glenella.
109
MASS Lionel 13L
Bert’s Jagger 8J is a dark red Block Buster son. We used him to clean up our registered cows after AI and on our commercial cows. We have been very happy with his calves. This twin bull looked like a bull since birth. He had an Oct 5th w.wt 955lbs and Jan 20th wt of 1395lbs. His dam is a good Bert’s NR Tycoon daughter. Her bull calf last year sold to Allan Fleming from Wawanesa.

MASS Louis 9L
Our biggest Jagger bull at weaning. Our 8 bulls had a straight oat ration in their creep feeder last summer. This guy had an Oct 5th w. wt of 995lbs and Jan 20th wt of 1395lbs. His Black Cobra dam has always produced well for us. Her bull calf last year sold to Cam Mason form Killarney.
MASS Lowry 3L (50% SIMMENTAL)
We tried something different when we AI his dam. Here is a solid black ½ Speckle Park bull. He had an Oct 5th w.wt of 850lbs and Jan 20th wt 1270lbs. His dam is an easy keeping Predestined Cow that goes back to our old Kopp Trademark cow that sold 2 bulls in the past two sales.
Massinon
MASS Leon 11L
Another Dark Red Jagger bull with some performance. This bull have an Oct 5th w.wt of 940lbs and Jan 20th wt of 1285lbs. His dam is a large frame dark red Westcott daughter that checks all the boxes.
Massinon Farms - Gerald Massinon Haywood, MB | 204-750-2150
MASS Luke 6L
This dimension bull always looked good from the start. He’s done well at the station. He has some white on his head. A nice 85lb B.W. ,an Oct 5th w.w of 970lbs and Jan 20th wt of 1390lbs. His dam is a quiet, has a nice udder, easy keeping Brooks daughter that we bought at the Pembina Triangle Sale from Triple R. Simmentals.

Mr OCF 180L
This calf had the makings of a herd sire when he was a few months old. 34D has sent sons and daughters to the test station before and I also retained her first daughter. Take a look at Lot 120, her grandson! Whether you are looking for a herd sire to produce steers or replacement females he will work. Polled, DNA pending and photo of dam available.
115
Mr OCF 191L
I don’t usually send March calves to the test station but I kept noticing this guy and his half brother Lot 118 and thinking they were older showing lots of potential. His EPD’s put him in the top 15% for calving ease and his All Purpose index is in the top 15% also, making him an all around profitable bull. He is polled, waiting on DNA results.

55E consistently delivers a powerful calf regardless of how she is bred. This year she finally gave me a heifer. This big fella is in the top 10% for calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight and the top 15% for yearling weight. His maternal stats are great. He will produce calves that grow as well as fill the replacement pen with keepers. Can’t go wrong here. He is polled. DNA sent and photo of dam available.
Mr OCF 186L
73F is a 1450 lb, fine boned, deep bodied easy keeping cow with a sound udder and lots of milk. This bull indexed in the top 25% for calving ease and top 10% for birth weight. His terminal index is in the top 20% and his all purpose index is in the top 30%. His half brother was a high seller in last years sale. He is polled with DNA pending and photo of dam available.
Mr OCF 189L
Both the March calves, lots 118 and 115 were sired by my herd bull. He was an easy keeping, well muscled good natured bull. and both these 2 fellows built are like him. OCF 95G the mother of this calf, is half sister Lot 119 bull in sale. A good cow family. He is polled. Waiting on DNA and photos available.
Mr OCF 176L
This calf was an eye catcher all summer long. This long smooth guy has EPD”s that put him in the top 30% for calving ease and top 20% for birth weight. He is in the top 40% with his All purpose index. His dam OCF 36D is a reliable producer. Take a look at Lot 902. This is her granddaughter. Generations of quality. He is polled. Waiting on DNA and photos of females available.
These Epic cattle sure do perform. They excel in calving ease, growth, maternal traits and most importantly profitability. His grandma and mother are both exceptional females. A full brother was a high seller in last years sale. He will provide you with cattle that have extra eye appeal and bring in the extra dollars. Take him home. He is polled. Waiting on DNA and photos available on females.
These bounty hunter calves are deep and soggy made but also have some style. 51L is off one of our purchases out of WLB dispersal sale. He has been a stand out since a very young age, with lots of length of spine, depth, style. He will add power and performance to your next calf crop.
TWD 7L is off a first calf heifer we purchased from Pembina triangle sale and she has knocked it out of the park on her first try. Depth, lots of length of spine and disposition are just some of what he has to offer. This MRL Missile son has a 84 lb birth weight to boot. Check him out before sale day.
TWD Leo 111L
This powerhouse son of IPU Bentley 81F is out of my first Simmental I purchased out of shades of the prairie sale. He is packed with muscle in hind quarters and soggy made through the middle. He will add power and performance to any cow herd. Can’t forget the blaze face and quiet disposition. Don’t miss out and have a look before sale day.
Diamond Bar S War Captain
BDH Knox 8L
This guy is a thick made, moderate son of the popular baldie True North bull and a beautiful Night Hawk daughter I purchased out of the Keystone Konnection sale from Lonestar Simmentals. Nova carries with her an impressive show record, and has turned into a functional front pasture female. Knox 8L is sound in his structure, strides out on a very nice set of feet and legs, smooth polled and to top things off he also has an excellent disposition. He performed very well on test, settling into the top ten for ADG at 4.21 lbs/day. If you’re looking for a calving ease heifer bull, look no further than 8L.
1L comes to you packed with calving ease and performance. His Mom is just a 1st calver and did one bang up job. He’s good headed and shows lots of masculinity, testicle and presence while still being smooth shouldered. Ready for your heifer pen.
KFJ 1L is sired by the calving ease specialist Night Hawk and mothered by a beautiful first calving cow that really hit it out of the park on her first calf. With his smooth shoulders and small head KFJ 1L should calve easy and still put enough grow in his calves come fall time.
KFJ 2L is sired by my senior herd sire and mothered by a deep bodied, excellent uddered, easy doing cow. 2L is a long made excellent footed herd bull prospect. He should sire long made steers with some extra frame at fall time.
Jean-Guy
WDSF Spoutnik 11L
Despite the fact that Spoutnik is a twin, that didn’t stop him to being one of the most powerful bulls of this year crop. He is heavy muscled, has a wide top and has good legs and feet. His calves should be very impressive. His dam, Cheesecake, was a high seller sold at the Gagnon farm production sale in 2014 and she is also an embryos donor. His sire, Copernic, is a great son of the famous bull Spartacus with lot of performance and muscle. Horned, diluter free, 100% Fleckvieh and genomics tested.

Saint-Benoit-Labres, QC | 581-372-3780
WDSF High Peak 14L
High Peak is also another twin that made the cut. In my opinion, he is the one who has the best pedigree of my bulls offered here with Imax, Chesapeake, Dirty Harry, Jahari and Harrach in his pedigree. His dam is one of the most beautiful cows of the herd, she has a perfect conformation and a perfect udder. This is a cow that never seems to age. High Peak calves will have lot of muscle and nice pigmentation. Hetero polled, diluter free, Fullblood and genomics tested.

WDSF Geyser 19L
Geyser is a well-balanced bull that I really like who checks all boxes, performance, muscle, deep ribs, calving ease and nice legs and feet. His sire, Gibraltar, is one of the best Fleckvieh sires at this moment, with WW and YW EPD’s among the best in the breed. His dam is a solid moderate framed and thick cow, who produces very well. Horned, diluter free, 100% Fleckvieh and genomics tested.
WDSF Maxfire 17L
Maxfire is a truly special bull! It is extremely hard to find a homozygous polled Fleckvieh bull with this color of such good quality. He is the combination of a son of Imax and a daughter of Spitfire which are probably two of the best polled and solid red Fleckvieh bulls. For those who like bulls with more frame and with lots of performance, you will like Maxfire very much. Homo polled, diluter free, 100% Fleckvieh and genomics tested.
WDSF Yoshee 5L
Yoshee is the bull to choose if you want to make excellent cows. His dam is a great purchase I made at Four Starr in Kansas. She is the only Clark daughter in Canada. With higher milk production, she always weans calves that are among the heaviest each year in a program where it is forbidden to creep feed calves, Yoshee was not an exception. His sire, Pol Heritage, is a very impressive bull who also has lots of maternal qualities. Horned, diluter free, 100% Fleckvieh and genomics tested.

SAS Copperhead G354 calves have been in high demand the last few years. Paternally, Copperhead’s pedigree is also maternally strong with black and red powerhouses. His steers will push down the scales and you will want to keep all his females! This bull is out of a first calf heifer that comes from a cow that I consider to be one of my best fullblood cows. A large frame cow with length, thickness and milk. The dam goes back to Gee Bar Polled Super Dude, a very strong polled line with lots of growth. The sire, Gilcroft Dancer is a bull we raised and sold to Eastern Breeders. He is an easy calving bull whos calves start smaller but grow well. Dancer gained over 7 lbs a day for 2 months of his test and averaged almost 6 lbs per day over his 120 day test. This calf has a lot of potential in his genetics.

His sire is one of the best bulls we have owned in the almost 50 yrs of raising Maine-Anjou He has always produced the most uniform group of calves year after year. His calves come easy and grow quickly with lots of length and thickness. His females make great mothers with small clean udders and lots of milk. This bull would make a great addition to any herd.

This bull is sure to turn some heads on sale day and all for good reason! We’ve admired this guy from the beginning for his extra depth and thickness. He’s a very smooth made bull with a very wide top line. This guy is a real powerhouse! 1L is a true representation of his dam’s production, she raises a top end calf year after year while being an extremely easy keeping and functional female. He was the biggest at weaning and hasn’t slowed down, he is among the top gainers in the pen. His mother has the ideal udder and is among the first ones to calve every year. The Beast Mode calves are my most consistent group of calves and have many daughters in the replacement pen. Free board and delivery until you need him.

A bull calf that was his mother’s first calf and I’d say she did pretty darn good. A stout, thick bull who I like a lot. His grandsire is from the great SAV Renovation whose semen is hard to get and is in high demand. His sire is the best footed bull I have seen and this calf is no different. His mother was a heavy milker with small teats.

Prime Dominator 23L

This bull is a twin to a heifer. His dam raised both calves, weaning over 1,200 lbs of calf. Dam is a ten year old out of Imprint 8317 and still going strong. She has a maternal EPD of +50. Bruin Torque (the sire) is known for replacement females and foot quality and can be found in the GENEX Sire Directory. You could build a cow herd out of this bull.
I have not seen many Iconic bulls for sale yet but here is a good one. He is one of the highest gaining bulls on test this year. Out of a Payweight-Pioneer dam that is moderate framed and producing well. This combination of sires and growth rate could take your herd up a notch or two.

sixty years23.03.24
Founded by 3 progressive cattleman, Frank R. Hay, Christopher S. Thomas and Ernest Donn Mitchell, the Manitoba Bull Test Station first opened its gates in 1964-65. In its infancy it was known as the Sire Indexing Centre and yet most referred to it as the Douglas Test Station and now the Station.
In its first year 113 bulls from 4 different breeds were part of test. Shorthorn, Angus, Hereford and the Charolais. From there the popularity of the Station grew to operating at its capacity of 500 bulls with a total of 12 other breeds in the early years. Douglas was the place to performance test bulls and producers were eager to be a part of it.
The Manitoba Bull Test Station began as a management tool for cattlemen. A bull’s performance on feed was known to be a genetically heritable trait. Bringing bulls together under a controlled set of management conditions gave the cattlemen an opportunity to determine the rate of gain performance of their bulls and select top performers. To this day, evaluation of the cattle remains a primary objective for the Station and with time new tools have been added to the battery of performance indicators.
As time went on and the Station saw the success of their bull program and the sale so it was decided to expand its offerings to developing heifers. An AI and Embryo transplant service was also introduced to complement the heifers as well as steer trials and bull boarding services.
As the Station moved into the 1990’s and beyond many changes were experienced. Events around the world and locally such as BSE, drought, flooding and the recent Covid 19 pandemic affected our ability to market our cattle as well as gather on open house & sale days. As a board we were challenged to think quickly and pivot in some instances in order to move forward.
The numbers of bulls on test decreased significantly as other test stations were established in different parts of the province. A number of larger producers and producer groups began having their own production sales bypassing the showcase opportunity at the Station.
The days of only a brush and comb on sale day fell to the way side and with that came picturing of the sale cattle for catalogue preparation. Sale animals have heads, toplines and tails clipped and are groomed on picture day which takes place in early February. Videos of all sale animals are also done professionally and made available pre-sale online. The marketing of the sale has seen a big swing to advertising online, posting weights on our website and live streaming the sale with internet bidding.
Today the Station works with nutritionists, feed companies and experienced cattle producers to provide bull & heifer rations that will efficiently develop animals on test with a focus on performance and longevity. Breeders are DNA testing for potential disease carriers and genetic markers. Ultrasound data remains a constant in our program so that buyers can use the data along with EPD’s and test data to aid in their purchasing decisions.
Celebrating 60 years is a great success for the Station, its consignors, board of directors and managers. It takes a team of energetic, progressive and forward thinking people to bring together marketable cattle year in and year out. We look forward to continuing the traditions developed at the Station yet evolving as the needs of today’s beef producers do.
sale terms & Conditions
The terms of the sale are cash or cheque at par to the Manitoba Beef Cattle Performance Association Inc. (M.B.C.P.A. Inc.). The buyer assumes all responsibility of his/her purchase at end of said purchase. The M.B.C.P.A. Inc. cannot be held liable after the sale clerk has recorded the buyer’s bidding number on the sale receipt. All settlements must be made with the settlement officers of the sale in the office before any cattle will be released. Phone bids welcome. Please contact the Test Station to arrange telephone bidding.
All bulls purchased may be left at the station until convenient for pick up at purchaser’s risk by signing a form in the office. One week free board, $6.00 per head per day after. Please inquire at the Test Station office for details. Livestock insurance will be available from HMS Insurance at the Station on sale day and is strongly recommended to be purchased. The guarantee on a bull is between the buyer and seller. The M.B.C.P.A. Inc. will act as a mediator in case of dispute. To protect both buyer and seller, a non-breeding bull must be reported to the seller within six months of the date of sale or according to the Breed’s Code of Ethics. The seller will not provide replacement or credit for physical injury or mismanagement. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder, the seller will not under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of the bull.
Decision Deferred Bulls:
A Decision Deferred Bull (DD Bull) is a bull who has not received a satisfactory semen test. About 45, 60, and 75% are expected to pass at 12, 13, 14 months of age respectively. A DD bull is usually a sign of immaturity and will most likely receive a Satisfactory passing with time. Any bull sold in the Manitoba Bull Test Station with a DD breeding soundness evaluation must still be above 50% normal and the veterinarian is confident that he will pass with time. If a bull is purchased in the sale, the purchaser will pay for the bull sale day and the funds will be held in trust. The bull will stay 4-6 weeks (dependant on veterinarian suggestion) at the Manitoba Bull Test Station and then will be retested at this time. If the bull receives a satisfactory grade, the purchaser can come pick the bull up and the cheque will be deposited. If the bull still does not receive a Satisfactory passing, it will be based on the suggestion of the veterinarian and consignor of how to proceed with the bull. Feed, yardage and semen retest will be the responsibility of the consignor until the bull reaches a satisfactory semen evaluation or other arrangements have been decided upon.
The Manitoba Beef Cattle Performance Association Inc. is only providing a service in providing this sale; persons attending this sale do so at their own risk. Sale catalogues will be available at the sale and copies of the registration certificates on file will be available at the office. Visitors may inspect the bulls at any time prior to the sale. If errors are noted in the report or in the sale catalogue, corrections will be made from the auction stand, and will take precedence over any printed matter.
